GRANTS BOOST FOR COMMUNITY

NOOSA ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP TEN LITTLE PIECES HAS BIG PLANS TO EXPAND ITS WORK AFTER RECEIVING A WELL-EARNED CASH BOOST.

The organisation is among 11 community groups across Noosa, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay sharing in more than $50,000 of funding thanks to Unitywater’s Community Grants Program.

Ten Little Pieces delivers education programs to school students across South East Queensland to encourage them to think about the environment and sustainability.

Founder and Director Alison Foley said it had started with her own children, after she told them they could have an ice cream after the beach but it would “cost” them 10 pieces of rubbish picked up.

She said the grant from Unitywater meant Ten Little Pieces would be able to engage more students, start more conversations and help them establish their own ripple effects of change for sustainability action.

Other Noosa groups to receive grants were Noosa Environmental Educational Hub, Noosa Women’s Shed and Wildlife Noosa Ltd.

The annual grants program provides funding to grassroots initiatives that support environmental outcomes, as well as supporting programs that help with issues faced by our community in the areas of

homelessness, mental health, domestic and family violence and youth.

Unitywater Executive Manager Customer and Community Katherine Gee said the successful recipients were an essential part of the community and helped to deliver critical programs for locals and the environment.

JOIN THE FUN WITH BASKETBALL

ONE OF OUR REGION’S FASTEST GROWING TEAM SPORTS, WHICH CAN BE PLAYED ALL THE YEAR ROUND IS BASKETBALL. AND WITH OUR LOCAL CLUB, NOOSA CYCLONES SUPPORTING ALMOST 700 MEMBERS, IT IS ONE OF NOOSA’S MOST POPULAR ACTIVITIES AMONGST OUR SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN.

Celebrating 30 years in 2023, Noosa Cyclones, currently based at The Noosa Leisure Centre, have almost outgrown their facilities, utilising additional courts at nearby Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

This has led to many Cyclone players and families raising much needed funds to help find and provide a new home.

Whilst the Leisure Centre is a hive of activity with numerous sports played there, being a community centre, the basketball games are often interrupted as the space is used to house important community programs such as the recent COVID vaccination and test centres.

“Having our own courts means we will be able to develop the sport and encourage our talented players to progress through to representing the State and playing in The National Basketball League,” Noosa Cyclones President Shane Nelson explains.

Run by volunteer parents the Noosa Cyclones Basketball club is a tightly run ship with 20 basketball games played back to back every Saturday and running to time.

Refereed by a range of talented players, parents and school mates, the club maintains a respectful culture and is a wonderful way to feel part of an extended community.

The club embraces an inclusive and family friendly environment where players can feel safe on and off the courts.

Basketball was Invented in 1891 by Canadian-American gym teacher James

Noosa Cyclones have nearly 700 members, with the majority being school-aged children.

Naismith who created vigorous indoor games to keep his students occupied on rainy days.

Developing into two teams with five-a-side, the primary objective is to shoot a basketball through the defender’s hoop while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop.

The game is fast paced with players moving swiftly and with agility, keeping within the rectangular court.

With basketball players being some of the highest paid professional athletes in the world, it is no surprise that after school and at weekends, backyards and driveways are home to makeshift courts where neighbourhoods dance to the rhythm of the bouncing balls as players, with mates or solo, practice their dribbling skills and shooting hoops.

With the recent end of the current season Noosa Cyclones will be recruiting new players and hosting a holiday program for players keen to play and improve whilst waiting for the new season to begin when the 2023 school term starts

For more information on how to become involved with the Noosa Cyclones, please visit their website or Facebook page.

KARLA THE KOALA A SPLASH HIT

AUTHOR ELIZABETH ‘FIZZI’ REYNOLDS AND ILLUSTRATOR LINDA ‘LILI’ WILLS HAVE RELEASED A NEW BOOK IN THE KARLA THE KOALA SERIES.

Karla Discovers the Great Barrier Reef was officially launched by Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart in November at a launch event which raised money for Noosa District Landcare and Tourism Noosa’s Trees for Tourism project - to fund the purchase and planting of trees for koalas.

The book is the third in the series, following on from Karla - The Coolest Koala in Noosa and Karla to the Rescue.

Fizzi said the chance to take Karla on an adventure to the barrier reef was too good to resist.

“We always wanted Karla to discover the Barrier Reef and to learn to snorkel but pondered where to set the story,” she said.

“We finally decided on Lady Elliot Island, as this glorious, world famous, sustainable reef destination, is basically in our backyard.”

For the writing of the book Fizzi said she travelled to Lady Elliot Island and immersed herself in island life, doing all the things that Karla would so should she visit.

With the story written, on island time, the words were handed over to Lili for the

creation of the watercolour illustrations that form a key part of the book.

The books are now offered as a three pack and can be found online at www. karlathekoala.com.au

COUNCIL CLARIFIES HEIGHT RULES

NOOSA COUNCIL HAS ISSUED A STATEMENT RE-AFFIRMING ITS COMMITMENT TO LIMITING HIGH RISE IN THE SHIRE.

In a statement released on November 15, Council said its newly endorsed Housing Strategy provided potential incentives to encourage investors to provide a greater delivery of accessible, social and affordable housing in areas with good access to public transport, employment and goods and services.

It said the inclusionary planning provisions used mechanisms such as bonuses and incentives to increase the developable floor area or allow one additional storey in larger centres such as Noosa Junction and the Noosa Business Centre.

“It’s important to clarify that any proposed amendments aim to contain projects to certain areas in the shire, because through the Housing Strategy consultation, the community supported locating more housing in centre where services and transport are provided,” Mayor Clare Stewart said.

“Feedback from our housing strategy also confirmed that the community support council playing a role in social, affordable and worker accommodation, but not at the expense of our environment, open spaces and green areas,” she said.

Cr Stewart said any potential relaxation for an additional one storey would only occur where social and affordable housing outcomes are being delivered and strict guidelines being adhered to.

Currently there are parts of Noosa Junction and Noosa Business Centre that are limited to three storeys and in Tewantin the height limit is two storeys, although Council says there is one site on the northern side of Doonella Street that could potentially go to three storeys if it provided for social and affordable housing.

“There are absolutely no plans in this strategy to have four storeys anywhere in the Tewantin Business Centre,” Cr Stewart said.

Community consultation is mandated under the local planning act for any changes to height restrictions too.

NOOSA ART GALLERY ACTIVITIES

NOOSA REGIONAL ART GALLERY IS FINISHING 2022 WITH A STRONG LINE UP OF EXHIBITIONS AND WORKSHOPS.

The A Bit More Paint exhibition featuring Sunshine Coast artists including Alex Lange, Pippa Makgill, Alicia Sharples, BJ Murphy, Casey Hewitt and Thom Stuart is on now until January 22.

On the workshop front, the gallery will host Artplay Sunday on Sunday, December 11, and on December 14 has a session entitled Painting with Ochre.

For the babies out there, the Art Explorers program on December 15 has been created with children aged 4-18 months in mind.

Other workshops for the children include the Fly Away Bird Characters session for 6-8 year olds on December 15 and the Quirky Bird Characters session for 8-12 year olds on December 15.

Looking further ahead, artist Alicia Sharples will share some of her secrets at an over 18’s event on Saturday, January 7, 2023. See www.noosaregionalgallery.com. au for more information.

WIN FOR NOOSA ALIVE FESTIVAL

THE NOOSA ALIVE FESTIVAL WAS AMONG THE LIST OF LOCAL WINNERS IN THIS YEAR’S SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESS AWARDS.

RACV Noosa Resort was inducted in the Hall of Fame at this year’s event, Cerge at Peregian Beach was recognised in the small business category for Advanced Technology, Kaaii Gourmet Indian Restaurant at Noosa was acknowledged in the small business category for Hospitality and NOOSA alive! in the small business category for Festivals and Events (Tourism).

All in all there were 32 winners across 17 categories in the annual event which attracted a capacity crowd of 855 people in November.

For the team at NOOSA alive! festival the award provided plenty of reasons to celebrate.

The not-for-profit festival is run mainly by volunteers, alongside a paid Festival Director, Ian Mackellar, and one administration assistant.

It is a 10-day arts and cultural festival and offers a world stage for those involved.

NOOSA alive! festival President Andrew Stafford said the group was proud to receive the award and looked forward to presenting the 10-day 2023 festival program shortly.

“We have always had a strong arts following on the Sunshine Coast and considering the challenges faced, the community has championed the Festival showing how thirsty they are for arts and culture here on the coast,” Mr Stafford said.

“As a committee we are genuinely excited about the passion and dedication of our local community.

“NOOSA alive! has a vision for the arts and cultural landscape within the local community incorporating the lead up to the Olympics.”

NOOSA alive! festival 2022 saw more than

20 live performance events with over 6.500 guests, showcasing artists who were grateful to be able to perform their craft during a very difficult two years for the industry.

Festival Director Ian Mackellar said curating a festival of this calibre was always a financial challenge and without the generosity of its long-standing patrons and corporate partners the Festival would not have reached its 20th year.

“I was delighted to be the Festival Director in 2022 and to be recognised for this contribution is an honour,” Mr Mackellar said.

Mr Stafford said with the ongoing challenges the arts community is facing, the committee was hoping to secure further sponsorship and more grant funding to allow the festival to grow and prosper to provide a much more exciting program in 2023.

The Sunshine Coast Business Awards are an annual awards program rewarding outstanding businesses on the Sunshine Coast.

An application process is submitted followed by an 8-minute interview.

Finalists are announced and invited to attend the presentation held at Twin Waters Convention Centre.

The 2023 NOOSA alive! festival will run July 21-30. Visit www.noosaalive.com.au for further information, or to become a sponsor.

Jodie Curran

“WE BACKED A WINNER!”

We certainly backed a winner when we elected to work with Jodie Curran. Jodie saw in our property precisely the things that our buyer ended up falling in love with. From the beginning, her realistic valuation of our property was informed by the real-life benefits of the home, floor plan, and location. Never did she worry about what else was on the market, or about the fluctuations in pricing of other listings. Jodie has a deep understanding of her local area and exactly what it is that buyers value. She uses her experience to market her listings to the relevant buyer pool. As a consequence, our home was sold within one week - for a price in excess of $200K beyond what other agents consid ered optimistic. Thank you, Jodie.
