Peregian Beach Market stallholders will be hoping for a drier June.

BRING ON THE SUNSHINE LOCAL BUSINESSES AND STALL HOLDERS AT PEREGIAN BEACH’S REGULAR MARKETS WILL BE LOOKING TO THE SKY FOR A TOUCH OF BLUE THIS MONTH AFTER DRIVING RAIN FORCED EARLY CLOSURES AND MARKET CANCELLATIONS IN MAY.

The organisers of the Peregian Beach Markets, held next to the surf club, couldn’t take a trick last month - forced to cancel their market on May 15 as the grounds were still flooded from the weather earlier that week, and then forced to cancel the postponed markets on May 22 as the rain teemed down. For the cafes in the village the Eastern Beaches News - June 2022

rain kept people away with many businesses opting to close early or stay shut in the face of day after day of rain. For those who like their days sunnier, the good news appears to be in the consensus of long range forecasts with the rain expected to stay away until Monday, June 6 when a few “light showers” are predicted - before the rain disappears again for a week. Weather data for the Sunshine Coast Airport shows it rained 22 out of the 31 days of May with a record breaking rain total of 621.8mm. The previous wettest May was in May 1999 when the airport recorded 440mm of rain. So far, 1723.6mm of rain has landed here since January 1.

BOYS DIVE INTO FOOTY PUDDLES BY FIONA EWINGTON NOBODY COULD HAVE PREDICTED WHEN THE WHISTLE BLEW TO SIGNIFY THE BEGINNING OF THE UNDER 14’S NOOSA TIGERS AFL CLASH WITH THE KAWANA PARK EAGLES RECENTLY, THAT THE HEAVENS WOULD OPEN WITH A TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR FOR THE ENTIRE GAME, MAKING PLAY INCREDIBLY CHALLENGING FOR THE PLAYERS, BUT VERY ENTERTAINING FOR SPECTATORS.

Both teams played with determination and tenacity accepting the slippery saturated ball that couldn’t bounce and a waterlogged ground. Despite the conditions the atmosphere was fun and upbeat. What started as a patch of mud on the side of the ground ended up a knee-deep puddle of water and to celebrate their victory the Noosa Tigers team, on impulse, skidded their way through the saturated field, ending up immersed in the newly formed pool. Whilst weather experts predicted a wet summer with The La Nina weather event, many of us were not expecting as many continuous days of rain as we have witnessed in recent months. Our region has seen two heavy rainfall patterns this summer. The first in February where rain gauges measured up to 1500mm of water falling in a considerably short time. Our infrastructure was unable to handle the huge volume of water which also coincided with high tides resulting in flash flooding in many locations. Our more recent, and more lengthy weather front has seen a fraction of this figure suggesting falling across a longer period of time. With storm water catchments cleared from 8

A before and after shot as the Noosa Tigers juniors took on the rain and Kawana Eagles.

debris during the first rain dump, meant that water found an easier path and less flooding. Whilst the Noosa Tigers team enjoyed an unexpected swim after their game in a newly created body of water that fell on their ground, it is advised to not swim in flooded waters as this can often contain raw sewage. None was detected at Noosa Tigers AFL ground and the boys received well deserved hot showers after their game. Fortunately, The La Niña weather event which has caused a wet summer across much of Australia may soon come to an end according to the latest models by The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) the nation’s weather forecaster. We will all welcome back some sunshine to The Sunshine Coast. easternbeachesnews.com.au

WOMEN RISE UP FOR TIME OUT IN EARLY MAY, SEVENTEEN WOMEN JOINED PHYSIOTHERAPIST NIKY HAMILTON ON A GORGEOUS FOURDAY RETREAT PROGRAM, DESIGNED TO HELP WOMEN TRANSFORM LIFE CHALLENGES INTO RESILIENCE.

Niky’s four day Rise Up Retreat has become an increasingly popular chance for women to press pause and take time out in a beautiful environment to rest, reflect and learn a step by step framework to build resilience. Her unique program includes inspiring seminar content on stress management, emotional regulation and mindset. It helps women understand their values and their strengths and to take key steps toward authenticity, confidence, courage and resilience. “The women who join us often have been through a challenging time in life and find themselves in a place where they know they need to make a change,” Niky said. “Whether it’s grief, family or relationship difficulties, career or health concerns, sometimes women just reach a point of depletion, where they have felt stretched thin. “They know they need to take time out to reflect, put themselves first, perhaps make changes and build resilience to navigate. This retreat offers exactly that.” Guests on the retreat enjoyed much-needed pamper time out at Spa Anise at Spicers Maleny, as well as delicious food all provided 10

by on-site chefs. Niky, pictured above, said the beautiful accommodation and spectacular scenery at The Ridge Maleny made it a weekend to remember. A weekend to press pause, take time out and connect. “This retreat has been the experience of a lifetime! I am so grateful,” said Estelle, one of the retreat guests. Niky has developed a passion for helping women build resilience through her own journey over the last eight years. She developed her Rise UP Retreat program specifically to help women take time out for themselves and learn the essential steps forward in building resilience. The next Rise UP retreat is to be held on August 4. Spaces are filling fast. The Synergy Women team only take bookings with a connection call to ensure we are a good fit!

Sell NOW — Move LATER 5 STAR

Review

Thanks Wayne! In early February 2022 I was approached by Wayne Hay who told me he had a number of potential purchasers who were very interested in buying my home. I signed up with him in the 7th February and four days later a contract of sale of my house was signed by all parties. This was no mean feat since I had insisted that a six month leaseback deal be a special condition of the contract. This was to allow me enough time to purchase another home in the same area. I had met Wayne earlier on a number of occasions and I had been impressed with his intimate knowledge of the Peregian Springs area and his marketing professionalism. He did not disappoint me. In summary he is a good listener and communicator, is a very personable agent and he has proven himself to be an excellent negotiator. Now he has to find me another house to live in!

Hardworking agent who thinks outside the box Wayne will constantly work hard to achieve results for his clients. The bonus for us was Wayne negotiating a flexible leaseback of our home for a few months until we were ready to depart on our trip around Australia. Wayne is always out and about in the community engaging with all. He is not the type of agent that over promises and under delivers. If you are after an agent who always keeps you informed through effective communication and is committed to getting a result and willing to think outside the norm Wayne is the agent for you.

NOOSA COUNCIL NEWS

SHORT-STAY DEADLINE LOOMING Noosa property owners have until 30 June 2022 to apply for short-stay letting and homehosted accommodation approval without incurring application fees. More than 650 applications have been received since the introduction of the new short-stay local law back in February 2022 from owners wanting to take advantage of the current fee waiver. To apply, visit Council’s website and visit the ‘Planning and Development’ section. HAVE YOUR SAY ON BUDGET

Council held a special budget meeting last week. It’s been a challenging budget on the back of a tough few years with Covid and the floods and we have also seen an increase in land valuations by the State Government. The draft budget is now out for community consultation and we are asking you, our community, over a two-week period to provide feedback and tell us what you think our priorities should be. This will not be the first time we are seeking feedback. The liveability survey which we put out, and the 1600 responses from our residents, has also been relied upon, with the draft budget aligning to key strategies and priorities highlighted from the outcomes from that survey. Combined with this, we have also used our Community Satisfaction Survey, an independent bi-annual survey, to help inform and guide this budget as to where the community believes investment in services is needed. But this is your money and your budget, so please provide us with your thoughts and feedback and tell us your priorities. Noosa Council is only one of a small number of local government authorities in Qld taking proactive steps to increase 14

levels of community engagement through its budget process and I would encourage all residents to make use of this opportunity. GREEN PROJECT ENTERS STAGE 2

Last week also saw the launch of the second phase of the YurolRingtail Conservation project which starts with the revegetation of ex-plantation areas with native species. Greenfleet Australia will invest in habitat restoration in return for securing the exclusive right to benefit from associated carbon offsets. Greenfleet have engaged Noosa and District Landcare to assist with tree propagation and planting. This will start as soon as conditions on the ground are suitable. Greenfleet’s participation will provide the Traditional Owners, the Kabi Kabi people, with ongoing financial, training and employment opportunities. BEACH VACUUMING CONTINUES

Speaking of the environment, Noosa Council is using an industrial vacuum at two of the beach areas worst affected by polystyrene waste particles from the Brisbane pontoons that washed ashore during the floods earlier this year. The vacuum is being deployed over two days. Mounted on a four-wheel drive vehicle, the vacuum is equipped with a screen to filter the polystyrene from the sand. Council staff follow behind the beach vacuum crew collecting remaining mess by hand. easternbeachesnews.com.au

WITH NOOSA MAYOR CLARE STEWART

Residents have done a tremendous job supporting the clean-up by collecting particles by hand and we sincerely thank them for their ongoing support and hard work. NEW SUPERMARKET FOR SUNRISE

Finally, to end on a high note, Council has now signed a lease that will see an IGA supermarket open at the Sunrise Beach Shopping Centre, pictured right. The tenancy is for 10 years with options to extend the lease for further periods. Council will commence a minor works programme in June 2022, followed by the IGA fit-out later in 2022. This work will be done around supply chain challenges with a view to seeing the IGA open as soon as possible. It’s a fantastic outcome for the community

and for one of Council’s key commercial sites and securing a strong anchor tenancy will benefit and strengthen this retail precinct. Until next month, stay safe, Clare.

Coolum Theatre Players actors getting to know their puppet friends for Avenue Q.

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS PRESENTS AVENUE Q, A MUSICAL COMEDY FEATURING PUPPETS AND HUMAN ACTORS WITH MUSIC AND LYRICS BY ROBERT LOPEZ AND JEFF MARX AND BOOK BY JEFF WHITTY.

Described as a “delightfully offensive show” Avenue Q has been praised for its approach in tackling significant issues in today’s society – including racism, homophobia and internet porn, with some too-close-to-home biting satire. Coolum’s director Jesse Hana Ellison refers to this show as the Sesame Street for Adults. It pokes fun at everything from the television show’s foundational belief in the value of education to the pro-social messages it communicates, by adopting its familiar characters and style and twisting them into a vehicle for commentary on life’s real lessons. Jesse spent several years performing professionally in Brisbane, having studied musical theatre, acting and stand up comedy, before joining the Coolum Theatre Players family in 2010. Her favourite shows include: Urinetown, Sweet Charity, Sylvia, Rocky 18

Horror, Spamalot and We Will Rock You. She was the entertainment coordinator for CTP’s 30th birthday celebrations in 2018 and last year directed the hugely successful season of Xanadu the musical at Coolum. Jesse said she is very much looking forward to directing this puppet-filled comedy which follows a group of twenty-somethings seeking their purpose in a big-city life. This laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighbourhood. Together, Princeton and his new friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. When: July 22, 23, 29, 30 at 7.30pm and Sunday 24th and 31st at 2pm. ARTISTS FIRED UP FOR POTTERY THE ARTISTS OF THE NOOSA SHIRE ARTS AND CRAFTS ASSOCIATION ARE SHOWCASING ALL THINGS POTTERY THIS MONTH AT THEIR PREMISES AT 1 WALLACE DRIVE IN NOOSAVILLE.

The Still Fired Up exhibition explores the art tradition of `still life’ and draws on the learnings from ancient Egyptian and GrecoRoman art. NACA president Gabi Dick said the exhibition combined the artistic interpretation of subjects with objects of inspiration. “All pottery and ceramic works in this exhibition have been fired in our own kiln on site at Wallace House,” she said. “For some artists their practice reflects the traditions of naturalism and realism, while 20

others have taken a more expressive approach where the work is not intended to illustrate a subject exactly, but to communicate ideas.” A treasure trove of craft and artwork is on sale in the shop and a special pop-up café will be operating in Wallace House. Noosa Shire Arts and Crafts Association is at 1 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. The exhibition is on show from June 4 to June 28 from 9am to 3pm. easternbeachesnews.com.au

BARNS LANE PROJECT KICKS OFF IT'S FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR THE UNIQUE AGRI-TOURISM PROJECT PLANNED FOR BARNS LANE AT COOLUM WITH COUNCIL APPROVAL NOW GRANTED.

Sharing the good news on site at 39 Barns Lane on May 11 the developers, Helen and Jason Grant and Jonathan Leishman, were enthusiastic about bringing their proposal to life by the end of 2023 and becoming a big part of the local community. Already the team have been working with the teachers and students of Coolum Beach State School, just next door to the site, about the orchard that will be planted on site, the gardens, and the local produce that will be showcased in a 2000sqm produce hall that is at the heart of the project’s offer. Jason said the way the project would be developed would add more than 360 car parks to the area which would be available for parents of the state school to use at drop off and pick up, hopefully helping to ease some of the congestion at the Sunshine Coast Motorway and Yandina-Coolum Rd roundabout at the same time. The 6.8 hectare site will eventually have more than three hectares of productive garden beds. The Barns Lane Farm will also include an Agri-tech incubator - `Dirt Lab’ where scientists and tech developers will join forces to create new products to enhance productivity for growers. In Stage 3 there will be an Events Centre and boutique hotel with a view to hosting rural style weddings and events. There will also be music and art space and a craft distillery and brewery, along with restaurants and cafes taking advantage of the fresh produce offered by 50 short and long terms stallholders in the grand, undercover, produce hall. The developers expect the project will 22

create about 170 full time equivalent jobs across a range of industries once complete. For the development team the next steps will including preparing the site, which Jason said would be slightly raised in places to ensure it stayed well above any potential worst case flood scenarios. They are also seeking interest from businesses and partners to be part of the commercial elements of the project, with agreements in place already with Compass Farms to have their students and volunteers be part of the maintenance and development of the gardens when the time came. “The Produce Hall will provide a neverbefore-seen opportunity for local producers, without being subjected to trading restrictions and weather conditions,” Jason said. “It will offer multiple connections to the market including selling direct to the public and supplying on-site restaurants and vendors.” Helen said the project would have something for everybody. “It caters to the many tastes and needs of families and foodies,” she said. “Other attractions include a distillery, brewery, dining, adventure play areas, animal farms, tours, a performance stage and much more.” Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel said adding the Barns Lane Farm to the Sunshine Coast’s tourism mix would cement the region’s profile as a leading agri-tourism destination.
