NOOSA SHORT-STAY PROPERTIES TRANSITION TO PERMANENT

A COUNCIL INITIATIVE

Over 60 Noosa short-stay properties have successfully transitioned to permanent rentals since late February. Earning praise from Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart. “Of the 488 properties on the permanent rental market in Noosa between February 23 and May 9, 64 were previously shortstay properties,” Cr Stewart said.

In early February, the Mayor had written to the short-stay property owners asking them to consider leasing their homes to long-term tenants, as a means to combat the housing crisis. In this letter the Mayor outlined the benefits of a

permanent rental which included cheaper rates, insurance and a consistent income

The Mayor commented that this was a great result as Council “could not otherwise deliver 64 houses to the market on our own, and certainly not in a matter of months,” Cr Stewart said. Cr Stewart thanked the property owners for answering Council’s call.

Albeit there is still a lot to do to solve the housing crisis, these efforts are a step in the right direction, with over 60 permanent rentals, means over 60 local families securing a home.

There are other issues that need to be addressed, particularly affordability of local housing. “While affordable housing is predominantly a state and federal government responsibility, finding solutions right now needs a collaborative effort and homeowners and investors can certainly help.”

Mayor Stewart added: “We thank those who have made their properties available for permanent rental and we continue to urge owners of short-stay let properties to consider helping ease the problem by making their properties available for rent by a permanent tenant.”

DONATED LINEN TRANSFORMED

Your donated linen will undergo a transformation by BlockTexx, converting it into valuable, high-grade recycled materials. These materials will then be used by Australian manufacturers to create innovative products such as hydromulch, geosynthetic fabrics, and building materials.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Holder Cr Maria Suarez said the event was a great way to clean out the closet and recycle for the environment.

“Just one truck load of linen collected will have diverted 10 tonnes of textile waste from landfill and will have removed carbon emissions equivalent to taking 60 cars off the road for a year.”

“This event gives the community a convenient way to do their part in creating a cleaner, greener environment and sustainable future, all while winning back some space in their cupboards.”

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said Noosa Council was proud to spearhead the inaugural Give a Sheet® textile collection initiative with BlockTexx in 2022.

“The community rallied around the cause with over 200 donations dropped off, helping to divert 3.2 tonnes of textile waste from landfill.”

“This initiative is not only a win for the environment but is also creating new resources for other sectors and helping Councils deliver on their commitments to the circular economy in a measurable, tangible way.”

Co-founder of BlockTexx Adrian Jones said the community feedback was always extremely positive.

“Everyone seems to have a ‘thank goodness you’re here’ moment when they realise that our onshore recycling option is a better alternative than landfill or export,” Mr Jones said.

“This state-of-the-art textile recovery facility developed in Australia will break down textiles into new recycled materials of rPET pellets and Cellulose clay to be used by Australian manufacturers – they won’t be going into landfill, burnt, or exported overseas. “Being able to access a commercial-scale circular economy solution for textile waste, diverting it from kerbside bins and landfill, right here on the Sunshine Coast, is remarkable.”

Be a part of the solution between 10 am and 2 pm on the 11th June 2023. Drop off your textiles at Chancellor State CollegeSecondary Campus, Sippy Downs or Tewantin State School, 10 Werin Street, Tewantin.

Households can drop off their clean and sorted old, worn-out sheets, towels, pillowcases, quilt covers and linen that are no longer wanted or can no longer be used.

FUNDING SUCCESS FOR COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS

ADDRESSING ANZAC LEGACY AND REPEAT OFFENDERS

In Parliament, among many speeches, I spoke of what our Anzacs, and those that have given their lives for our freedoms and safety, may think regarding repeat offenders. We are both part of the solution as well as the problem, including us as MP’s who need to step up in bipartisan agreements, instead of rock throwing, positioning, and wedging. Queenslanders understandably

have had enough and as 1 of only 5 who voted in favour of an amendment in Parliament to see mandatory 1 year sentencing for recidivist youth offenders, I am equally frustrated, especially with the ongoing lack of support for remote relocation or diversion sentencing.

TRASH TO TREASURE

THE TOOL SAVING MONEY AND THE PLANET

Sunshine Coast Council Economic Development Councillor Terry Landsberg urged local organisations to sign up to enjoy the benefits.

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure so the more organisations that sign up, the more supply and diversity in resources become available to exchange,” Cr Landsberg said.

“From timber and metal to stationery and crafts, organics to soils – there’s a whole range of exchanges to be made to help turn your waste into a valuable resource while making a positive impact on our planet.

This matchmaking tool with a difference is turning trash into treasure.

And it is enjoying great success on the Sunshine Coast, helping the region surge towards its goal of being the most sustainable in the nation.

From timber and metal to stationery; and crafts and organics to soils, a range of material otherwise destined for landfill is being traded – and given new purpose - using the online marketplace-style ASPIRE platform.

This connects likeminded local businesses and organisations who can negotiate exchanges that save money – and the planet!

Sunshine Coast Council was one of the first councils in Queensland to invest in ASPIRE.

Now the initiative has reached a major milestone here, attracting 300 members and diverting more than 3200 tonnes of wastebound material and products – that’s around 29,000 fridges.

Thanks to the platform, the region has this financial year saved $475,000 in disposal costs, and 1000 tonnes of carbon emissions have been saved through exchanges.

The members include family-run businesses, large manufacturers, community and sporting groups, schools and childcare centres.

It is accessible for all organisations with an ABN and is free if you have fewer than 100 full time staff.

“Sunshine Coast Council is proud to be one of the first councils in Queensland to invest in ASPIRE in October 2020 and it’s terrific to see nearly every council get behind it in South-East Queensland.

“The uptake in councils across South-East Queensland alone means the ASPIRE marketplace now connects opportunities to a wide and diverse catchment within the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Moreton Bay and significant industries across Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast and the Scenic Rim.”

ASPIRE also provides organisations with valuable data on carbon savings which can influence the buying decision of an increasingly growing number of environmentally aware and socially conscious consumers.

BUS SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS

ENHANSING ACCESSIBILITY AND RELIABILITY FOR RESIDENTS

Starting on Monday, June 5th, there will be a series of enhancements to the bus services throughout the Sunshine Coast.

These improvements aim to increase the frequency of buses, enhance accessibility to public transportation, and ensure more dependable timetables.

The changes include:

• a new bus route to connect Nirimba with Caloundra (route 608)

• extending route 622 further into Peregian Springs

• extending route 631 to a new bus stop at the Ginger Factory

• timetable changes for routes 606, 607, 610, 612, 615, 620, 622, 630 and 631.”

Route 622 – Maroochydore to Noosa Heads via Airport and Coolum

The extension of the coverage of route 622 will see a service south of The Avenue further into Peregian Springs.

You’ll be able to catch the bus from seven new stops located at:

• Ridges Boulevard at Tea Tree Grove (toward Maroochydore only)

• Ridges Boulevard at Kurrajong Circuit

• Ridges Boulevard at Mallee Street

• Ridgeview Drive at Laurina Way

The bus service improvements will extend all short trips, which currently commence or conclude at Sunshine Coast Airport, to cover the entire route from Maroochydore to Noosa Junction.

‘BACK-TO-BASICS’ BUDGET TO KEEP RATE RISE BELOW CPI

MORE THAN 80 PER CENT OF NOOSA SHIRE RATEPAYERS WILL HAVE AN AVERAGE RATES BILL INCREASE BELOW CPI

Mayor Clare Stewart said residents’ input as part of the liveability survey and corporate plan consultation had heavily influenced this year’s budget.

“We know our residents are struggling with cost-of-living pressures and we’ve worked very hard in developing this draft budget to ensure that for 63% of ratepayers on the minimum general rate, the rise in their annual rates bill will come in at 5.5%, which is well below CPI.

“We have also applied a freeze on levies to help minimise the financial impact on ratepayers,” she said.

Cr Stewart said over 80 per cent of ratepayers will have an average increase below CPI.

“It’s been a significant challenge to put together this budget in the face of a 7.4% CPI increase, significant land valuation increases and the rising cost of doing business,” Cr Stewart said.

“This is very much a back-to-basics, nofrills budget aimed at maintaining the high level of service our community expects, with improvements and new initiatives where we are able to.

“We’ve worked really hard to mitigate the flow-through of land valuations, resulting in about 4000 property owners seeing a reduction in their rates compared to the previous year. This is due to the mechanisms we’ve used to manage the volatile land valuations, which rose by an average of 62 per cent across the shire,” the Mayor said.

Every eligible pensioner is now set to receive the full pensioner rebate of $115, where previously it was a sliding scale depending on

eligibility.

“This is a cost of $80,000 to the budget, but it’s Council’s commitment to helping out those more vulnerable in our shire,” the Mayor said.

Key initiatives of the $132 million budget include:

• Increased investment in shire-wide parks, trails and roads maintenance.

• Ongoing affordable housing advocacy and policy implementation.

• Continuation of the Go Noosa free weekend bus initiative.

• Continuation of the Living Well Noosa program.

• Progression of the Destination Management Plan.

• Support for small businesses with the implementation of the Small Business Friendly Council program.

• Ongoing science-based water quality monitoring program.

• Ongoing vegetation mapping review to identify critical bushfire hazards and inform conservation.

• New waste recovery initiatives to reduce recoverable materials going into landfill and eliminate illegal dumping.

“These are the areas our residents told us to prioritise in the feedback we received as part of the recent corporate plan community consultation process plus the responses to the liveability survey.”

Mayor Stewart said the budget includes an ambitious $39 million capital works program that will deliver a number of big-ticket items. These include replacement of the Lawnville Road bridge in the hinterland, the Garth Prowd bridge renewal, Eumundi Noosa Road Resource Recovery Centre expansion and Ross Crescent stabilisation works.

“Running in tandem with the capital program is our $80-million-plus QRA funded

disaster recovery infrastructure program following last year’s floods so it’s a big year for construction.”

Community and environment groups are also in for a boost with an increase to Council’s grants programs.
