As one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar for our region the Noosa Triathlon always attracts a strong crowd, with the 5km Pink Run on the Friday morning a hit with schools and school children every year. Take care and be patient as we have a few days of busier than normal traffic, and good luck to everyone locally who’s competing. likely our borders will open and COVID-19 vaccination levels will hit the targets our Governments have set for us, events, live music, markets and even the annual Christmas Carols in the Park are back on the agenda. Being a monthly publication it can be difficult to alert our readers to everything coming up when dates are not yet set. We do our best though to catch up on late dates on our facebook page @easternbeachesnews, so if you haven’t yet, add us to your feed and when we find something it will pop up on your socials. On the flipside, if you spot something you’d like us to cover, it’s another way to get in touch. There’s plenty to read about in this month’s edition, including a few good tips from Mark Horsfall on dealing with stress (p14), Geoff

ART TO CAPTURE COAST STORY THE GIANT NORFOLK PINE THAT SUDDENLY DIED NEAR THE SOUTHERN ENTRANCE TO THE BEACH IN THE PEREGIAN BEACH PARK EARLIER THIS YEAR WILL BE CELEBRATED FOREVER AS AN ARTISTIC WORK.

A colloboration between artist Kay Christochowitz, Noosa Council, the National Bushfire Recovery Fund (Federal Government) and Peregian Beach Community Association will see the remains of the pine tree carved into a story of the marine creatures that live along this part of the coast. Kay said he was looking foward to starting on the work and hoped that it would help locals and visitors to gain a greater appreciation of magnificent marine environment that surrounds them. PBCA’s bushcare co-ordinator Rochelle Gooch said while the Norfolk Pine sculpture would gradually wear and erode, it would continue telling an important story about the coastal environment in which it sits. PBCA’s bushcare group will be planting native trees in the eroded and fire-scorched dunes around the sculpture which are still recovering from the 2019 bushfires.

Artist Kay Christochowitz (centre), architect Sharyn Kerrigan and Peregian Beach Community Association bushcare coordinator Rochelle Gooch, left, at the sit of the old Norfolk Pine.

FINAL DAYS TO HAVE A SAY ON CHAP RESIDENTS KEEN TO HAVE A FINAL SAY ON THE COASTAL HAZARDS ADAPTATION PLAN HAVE JUST DAYS LEFT TO MAKE A SUBMISSION.

Work on the first version of the CHAP plan was completed earlier this year, however, after a strong response from residents wanting to have more of a say, the Council negotiated an extension of time with the State Government before it submitted its plan to be considered and possibly ratified. Noosa Council Mayor Clare Stewart said the CHAP plan was a work in progress. Eastern Beaches News - November 2021

“We’ve listened to the community, taken on feedback and as a result of this, revised the draft Coastal Hazards Adaptation Plan. “It’s currently out for further community input, with the three week engagement period for the revised plan closing on 1 November 2021, so if you want to make a submission, please be quick. “To review the revised document and provide comment, visit www.yoursay.noosa.qld. gov.au. “Significant changes have been made as a result of the community feedback.” 3

NEW PRESIDENT TAKES OFFICE

Dan Purdie MP (Ninderry), Penny Casey (Secretary), Kane Livingstone (outgoing President), Leigh McCready (incoming President), Mike Goss (Treasurer) and Amelia Lorentson (Noosa Councillor) at the Peregian Family and Friends AGM.

LOCAL RESIDENTS GATHERED IN OCTOBER TO ELECT THE NEXT COMMITTEE FOR PEREGIAN FAMILY & FRIENDS GROUP.

Peregian Family and Friends held their Annual General Meeting at Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club, welcoming members from Sunshine Coast Regional and Noosa Shire Councils. Dan Purdie, MP for Ninderry and Councillor Amelia Lorentson from Noosa Shire Council were in attendance too. Newly-elected President Leigh McCready, who founded the original Peregian Beach organisation in 2017 prior to the merger with the Peregian Springs Residents Association, said: “We are a unique association in that we cross both shire and electorate borders and represent the whole of Peregian.” “The important thing is not the lines on a map, but where our community of interest is – we all shops at the same retailers and cafes, send our kids to the same schools and experience the same issues of congestion, parking, lack of public transport and infrastructure.” “For example, our most popular and important project, which has been the revival of the Peregian Surf Club, affects us all alike 4

“Peregian Beach is the closest beach for around 15,000 people across Peregian, and the nipper program educates children from across the whole area.” Ms McCready praised outgoing President Kane Livingstone for his three years of service and listed highlights including the revival of the Nippers program at Peregian Beach, fundraising in the wake of the 2019 bushfires and the group’s contribution to Noosa Council’s Coastal Hazard Adaptation Plan roundtable consultation. “This is in addition to the everyday business of being a residents’ association – representing the community regarding upcoming developments and projects, championing infrastructure which improves our lifestyles and organising community events,” Ms McCready said. “The committee would like to thank all members for their ongoing commitment to the Peregian community and for their contribution to making Peregian such a great place to live, work and play!” For further information about Peregian Family & Friends or to become a member, please visit www.peregianfriends.com or the Peregian Family & Friends Facebook page. easternbeachesnews.com.au

WHAT’S ON WITH JULIA LOANEY

STEP OUT WITH LADIES IN BLACK IN LATE NOVEMBER, EARLY DECEMBER THE COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE WILL TAKE ON THE LOOK AND FEEL OF AN OLD SCHOOL DEPARTMENT STORE FOR THE LATEST SHOW BY COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS.

Set in the 1950s, Ladies in Black follows Lisa (newcomer to CTP Sienna McRitchie) over the summer holidays as she begins work at F.G Goode’s, a fashionable department store in Sydney, following her final year of school. This musical is not only a coming of age story for a teenager in 1950s Australia, it follows the lives of other women in the Ladies wear department of this major department store. We follow the stories of growth and change of several of the women: a coming of age, a marriage breakdown and finding new love. Fay (Ashleigh Marriott) and Patty (Shelley Hansen) work in “Cocktail Frocks” and are tasked with the role of training and nurturing our young heroine, something that they initially find quite beneath them, but they soon come to love this intelligent little girl and the way that she touches their lives. This is a wonderful musical by Carolyn Burns with music by Tim Finn, directed by Linda Gefken (We Will Rock You, Spamalot, The Addams Family and Sweet Charity, to name a few). Linda was a real fan of Split Enz in the early days, Tim Finn in particular, and is thrilled that he has expanded his talents to include writing the music for this delightful musical. Fans will recognise some elements of early Split Enz music, as well as plenty of 1950s styles. The music is lyrical and melodic and audiences will be singing the tunes from the show for days afterward. Costuming for this production is a real challenge, and now that we have the fabulous Michelle Peloe on board as costumier, our dresses and suits are a real treat: some vintage 6

COUNCIL NEWS WITH NOOSA MAYOR CLARE STEWART

SHORT STAY LAWS IN FROM 2022 NEW LAW TO BALANCE SHORT STAYS

Council has approved a new local law aimed at managing the impact of short-stay letting and home-hosted accommodation properties on residential amenity. It’s set to take effect next year. Council is acting on calls from the community by introducing the local law, after the State Government shelved its plans for a state-wide framework. Noosa Council is the first local government in Queensland to adopt a local law to manage short-stay letting and home-hosted accommodation. The new local law will give Council power to manage the impacts of short-stay properties on residential amenity through the introduction of minimum safety standards for properties, the establishment of a 24/7 complaints hotline and the trial of using a security firm to monitor problem properties. The local law introduces an approval process for short-stay and home hosted properties which will take effect from February 2022 and which is renewed annually. DIGITAL HUB UPDATE

Our Peregian Digital Hub continues to go from strength to strength. Director of the Hub, Chris Boden and two technologists based at the Hub, Deborah van der Vlist and Laszlo Csabi have developed a project to enhance Cherbourg’s Material Recovery Facility (recycling) using artificial intelligence. It’s a great partnership between the Digital Hub, Cherbourg and Noosa Councils, Advance Queensland and the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation. Utilising artificial intelligence technology, the system comprises a series of 3D cameras that monitor waste materials on conveyor belts and artificial intelligence software that identifies individual items and counts them. The system then learns to detect a complex array of waste objects by being trained on a 8

large database of labelled images which will be produced by the data team in Cherbourg. A fantastic project and a great example of the innovative and market leading projects coming out of our Hub. CONNECTING COMMUNITY

Well we are all about connecting our community at Noosa Council and ‘Connecting Noosa’ is a Council initiative to support residents reconnecting with friends and making new ones by participating in free community activities. The program changes monthly with some of the popular activities including yoga, tech and sewing workshops, Tai Chi and music in the botanic gardens. For a full program, see the Community Support section of www.noosa.qld.gov.au. BUSHFIRE SEASON

Finally, with bushfire season approaching Council is doing much in the space of fire preparation and our local disaster management group is getting prepared. Our new Fire Management Officer at Council is on board as we prepare to bolster our fire mitigation efforts across 178 Council Bushland Reserves. Our local disaster management group is watching the long-range forecasts, and we’ll be making sure systems are in place, to ensure we are ready for any severe weather summer brings. For further information and to see how best you can prepare please see www.getready. qld.gov.au for advice on preparing for storms and bushfires and making an emergency plan and see www.distaster.noosa.qld.gov.au to register for disaster notification alerts. ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM SHOULDER PAIN? There can be a number of different reasons for shoulder pain. The most common is impingement, which is compression of either the small tendons or bursa leading to bursitis or tendon tears. This is often felt as an ache into the outside of the shoulder and into the upper arm with overhead activities, lying on your side or taking the hand behind the back. Causes can include repetitive strain (such as paddling, swimming or surfing), weak scapula muscles, postural problems or weakness in the rotator cuff muscles. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis, but also a thorough assessment of the underlying cause which can be different in everyone. Understanding the cause helps form a treatment pathway. The solution can include

Eastern Beaches News - November 2021

understanding what to avoid, changing your workstation or swimming technique, and starting a specific strengthening program. Our tips for happy shoulders! • Care with weights such as shoulder press or tricep dips • Get strong in the shoulder blades – an essential support for shoulders • Care with stretches- some stretches can make this problem worse!

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH CHAPLAIN MARK HORSFALL

ARE YOU COPING WITH STRESS? THIS TIME OF YEAR IS ALWAYS FULL OF ACTIVITY. STUDENTS IN GRADE 12 ARE STARTING THEIR QCAA EXAMS, ALL OTHER YEAR LEVELS ARE FACING FINAL ASSESSMENTS AND FOR MANY OF US ADULTS, THIS IS THE BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR.

Stress (abnormal pressure) levels in schools and the community spike significantly in these months leading up to Christmas. Stress wreaks havoc on your emotional equilibrium and physical health so here are some tips that might help. Don’t over fill your cup! Last week I attended a seminar by psychologist, Dr Robi Sonderegger. He said, stress is like water being poured into a cup. The cup (you) has a certain amount of water it can hold. Once the limit is reached, water flows over creating a mess. When we are overloaded with stress our emotions and life can spiral out of control. If we are feeling stressed then we have to reflect on what we are putting into the cup and if it’s too much, consider how can we reduce the flow. Work slower to work faster! When we were under the pump, my old landscaping boss would say, “less haste, more speed”. He knew that working faster often caused mistakes and we were more effective when we slowed down. Take a break in your study or work. Pause for a few minutes to get

it right and guard against rushing. Slowing down might actually cause you to be more effective. Breathe! When stress levels are rising and emotions bubbling up, pause and take a deep breath in for 3 and out for 3. I say “relax” to myself, as I’m breathing. You will be surprised at how it helps to clear your mind and ground you. Sleep! Getting enough sleep is critical in keeping well, maintaining healthy brain functioning and being effective in daily activities. School students should sleep 9-12 hours and adults 7-9 hours a night. Research shows that good sleep plays a huge role in reducing stress and improving mood. Do something you enjoy! It is easy to get caught up in just working or ticking off the to do list. Allow time in the busy-ness to do something you enjoy, even if it is only for 30 minutes. Your productivity will increase and you will be in a better mind space. So good luck managing your stress levels over the coming months. * Mark Horsfall is the Chaplain at Coolum State High School

Green warriors unite Local Landcare volunteers joined forces with OzFish Unlimited to restore a fire affected area along Murdering Creek in Peregian Beach in October in the first of a series of planned community working bees under the auspices of Bushfire Recovery. The group removed harmful weeds and planted native shurbs and ground covers to help restore the site and improve the creek habitat for fish life. 14

SURF LIFESAVING WITH JOHN RODERICK

GIVE IT A GO INTERESTED IN BEING A VOLUNTEER, THEN WHY NOT TRY LIFESAVING AT PEREGIAN BEACH? SURF LIFESAVERS ARE MEN AND WOMEN WHO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO PROVIDE SUPERVISION AT OUR BEACH.

All qualified surf lifesavers wear the internationally recognised red and yellow patrol uniform. The red and yellow cap is a safety symbol and is proudly worn by surf lifesavers so they can be easily identified by the public. When you go to the beach, no doubt you look for the red and yellow flags which our lifesavers place in the best area to swim at. Our lifesavers are allocated to a patrol team, which is coordinated by a patrol captain who is responsible for the coordination of actions in monitoring the beach and in times of rescues and first aid. We have many different roles that a volunteer

can enjoy. Not everyone needs to be a swimmer or board paddler. Lifesaving has other roles such as first aid and radio operations that members participate in. Do you have some spare time, looking to meet other members in the community? Whether you have lived here for many years, or a new resident lifesaving can be a great community organization to participate in. Whatever your skills are or your area of interest or the time you can give lifesaving at Peregian Beach welcomes you. Want to know more? Contact us at hello@ peregiansurfclub.com
