Funding to beat fires Peregian Beach Digital Hub-based company, Fireball International, will receive $500,000 in Federal Government funding to put towards the roll out of a high tech wildfire monitoring solution in Australia. Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the company was one of 11 across Australia funded by an Entrepreneurs’ Programme valued at $4.65 million. “Fireball International has developed an Early Wildfire Detection System that can alert emergency services and authorities within minutes of bushfires starting, which will allow rapid response so the fires can be extinguished while they are still small,” Mr O’Brien said. “This system

will reduce significantly both the human and financial cost of wildfires such as those seen in Noosa and on a great scale, across Australia last summer, and could have a significant economic and social benefit not only for Australia but also globally.” Speaking about the technology earlier this year Fireball co-founder Chris Tylor said. “Our analytical abilities include satellites, data-driven deep machine learning software trained to detect and confirm fires, and custom sensors that be installed on towers, allowing us to map fires with unmatched speed and accuracy. We have the system up and running in California and are ready to implement it at home in Australia.”

I’d encourage everyone to support these local businesses and help them, to help us, bring you the news each month. I’d also love to hear from you about the stories you’d like to see in these pages, and the people, the groups and the projects you’d like to share with the community. This month’s edition includes a quick guide to how and where to vote early. Polling booths for election day had not been released as we went to print, the best bet there is to keep an eye on

It also includes our first column from Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart (page 12) who shares a few of the projects on the boil with Council right now, including upgrades to several public amenities along the coastal strip. We hope this is the first of many columns and thank Clare for taking the time to put pen to paper to talk to our community. On the negative side of things Senior Constable Maria O’Brien has reported a big month for unauthorised, non-Covid approved, parties in the Coolum Policing District, including one event at Peregian Beach. Snr Const O’Brien assures us the police are on the hunt for the event organisers, but has also asked the public to report any suspicious behaviour to Police on 131 444. I hope you enjoy this month’s read, Geoff

State Election 2020 - October 31

Start voting from October 19 When it comes to Queensland elections, 2020 is sure to go down in history as being slightly unusual to say the least. With the spectre of COVID-19 still in the air this election will include a longer postal voting period and a more comprehensive early voting period than normal in the lead up to election day on October 31 when there will be some 1300 polling booths open across the state from 8am to 6pm. For voters looking to submit their votes by post, the last day to apply for a postal vote is Friday, October 16 (either online at ecq.qld.gov.au or by phoning 1300 881 665). Early voting booths will open in each

State seat from Monday, October 19, with booths to be open 9am to 9pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9am to 6pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday every day until the election – and 9am to 5pm on Saturday, October 24. Continued, page 4.

State Election 2020 From page 3... Don’t forget to bring your own pen or pencil. Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said the ECQ is working to ensure Queensland electors have every opportunity to vote for their representative in the next Parliament. “Usually postal vote applications open with the issue of the writ, which begins the election period. “However, with COVID-19 still a factor, we anticipate strong interest in postal voting just as we saw in March’s local government elections where around 570,000 electors applied. “While electors can apply for a postal vote on the ECQ website or by phoning the ECQ’s call centre from Monday 14 September, we can’t mail the ballot papers until after candidate nominations close in mid-October. “We remind electors who applied for a postal vote in March and want to postal vote in October, they need to apply again,” he said. The ECQ is also establishing special postal voting arrangements for residents of certain aged care facilities which would usually receive a mobile polling service as a ‘declared institution’. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and to protect vulnerable residents, the ECQ is unable to provide this service for this election. However, the ECQ will streamline the postal vote process for these facilities, to make sure it is easy for residents to vote by post if that is their preference. Mr Vidgen said electors can be assured ECQ is ready to deliver a COVID-safe State general election with its Statement of Intent outlining the election’s delivery principles. “To ensure voting in person can be 4

It’s important to note that due to everyone’s careful adherence to health advice during the March local government elections, there was no subsequent spike in COVID-19 infections,” he said. State Election - October 31, 2020

Meet the candidates so far… As we go to print on October 6 for this month’s edition there’s still a chance new candidates may put their hand up to run for the seat of Noosa - with nominations open until mid-October. In a bid to help our readers understand a bit about the candidates we know of so far we offered each candidate 300 words and a picture to “pitch” the reason you should vote for them come October 31. The responses we’ve received are reported in the following pages, in order of response. Those who did not respond will have headshot and an email address published. SANDY BOLTON Independent As your current State Member of Parliament, the only Independent out of 93, I have been honoured and proud to have served you for the past 3 years, as well prior to that as one of your Councillors. Having raised family, worked and volunteered alongside our community for 30 years, we have shared so much. In the last 12 months, from nights at the evacuation and command centres during our fires, to the COVID emergency and recovery, we have demonstrated who we are, and what we are capable of. “Empowering communities” was one of my key messages at the last election, and we have seen first-hand what can be achieved beyond emergencies when we unite and focus our efforts. Historical issues such as dangerous bridges and intersections have now been funded, with over $20m alone this year for our organisations, clubs and endeavours. A cleaner and safer river with our first ever dedicated MSQ Officer, and yes, that long overdue cleanout of Burgess Creek is underway. Much to celebrate, and yes, more to do. Please visit me at www.sandybolton.com/ ourfuture There are many benefits to being ‘independent’.One is that we are not 6

dependent on which party is in power to achieve, as we work with all sides at all levels of Government. Secondly, having an MP whose only alliance is to their community, not to one ideology or policies set by a party, is liberating. We are empowered, focused, and have demonstrated what we can do. The message this election is simple: Let’s keep Noosa ‘independent’ and build on what we have accomplished. It is an exciting time, yes with some challenges, however many, many opportunities! Our electorate is diverse, vibrant and very unique, with a community I consider as family. I will do whatever it takes to ensure all voices are heard, to create the present and future sought, and to make you proud. Blessings and thank you for all that you do, every day.

Noosa Council update:

Mayor Clare Stewart

OREALLA CRESCENT Well, as we all collectively breathe a sigh of relief, none more so than the immediate residents, it is terrific to announce that the Orealla Crescent Bridge at Sunrise Beach is now complete and the David Low Way has re-opened to through traffic. I would personally like to thank the residents for the co-operation, support and patience and I commend our Infrastructure Department here at Council for their ongoing hard work and diligence in ensuring that the project was delivered on schedule. Well done all round.

$700,000 received in Federal funding for our FireTech projects and stakeholders. The Hub’s FireTech Connect is an initiative that is focused on the use of new technology to build regional communities’ bushfire resilience. Launched in March 2020, the FireTech Connect program is made up of over 20 companies developing breakthrough technology solutions to predict, detect, fight, manage and recover from catastrophic bushfires. Noosa is emerging as a national centre of excellence for FireTech. Fire mitigation has never been more critical and we are so grateful to the Federal Government for their ongoing support in this area.

LIONS PARK NOOSA HEADS Many of you may be aware that the Lions Park at Noosa Heads has been opened to parking over the September school holidays. Councillors voted to re-open the park during the school holidays to support our local businesses, residents and visitors through additional parking means. We have also written to the State Government to use the Lions Park to provide paid car-parking during long weekends and further holiday periods while the Covid-19 health directive is in place. This will help to accommodate extra drive-in visitors as a result of the Covid-19 travel restrictions and border closures. PEREGIAN DIGITAL HUB It was terrific to be at the Peregian Digital Hub on September 30 to welcome The Honourable David Littleproud MP Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management along with our Federal member Llew O’Brien MP in recognition of the

PUBLIC FACILITIES OVERHAUL Finally, to finish with the very boring but critical topic of public toilet facilities, it is terrific that Council are busily renovating a range of public amenities across the Shire. This is thanks to the $220,000.00 initiative between Noosa Council and the Queensland’s Governments Unite and Recover Program. We’re more than mid-way through the project, which includes various upgrades to toilet blocks right across the Shire from Boreen Point to Sunshine Beach. Grass roots spending at its best. Until next month, stay safe, Clare.

Local Entertainment - Diplomatic Relations

Live theatre making a comeback at Coolum Dust off your theatre clothes, grab a ticket and get ready to have a laugh when Coolum Theatre Players finally get the chance to deliver the farce and fun that is Diplomatic Relations. Originally scheduled to open on March 27 this year at the Coolum Civic Centre the production became a victim of the Covid-19 crisis and the social distancing rules that came with it. Coolum actor and musician Michael Broer said it had been a tough call at the time for the cast and crew just 10 days out from opening night - but the right one to make. Michael, who previously performed as the Killer Queen in CTP’s production of We Will Rock You, said he was enjoying the change of pace with his role in the new show as the bumbling Hamish Carruthers - the freewheeling husband to the Australian ambassador to the mythical country of Guaranguay. “I’m a complete idiot, caught in a web of lies of my own doing,” Michael said. “I’m frantic and kind of panicked for most of the play.” Michael said he had not heard of the play until he saw the script. “It’s a very English script, it’s a farce and it is quite funny.” For Michael, the show offers the hope of a bit of stage time. His other regular gig on the Coast, as bass player with the three piece band The Cumquats playing a regular gig at the 14

Alex Surf Club has also been on hold due to Covid. On the positive side though, he said he’d had more time to put into his study for a Bachelor of Creative Industries (Theatre and Performance) at the University of Sunshine Coast. Diplomatic Relations is a fast and funny farce written by Geoff Bamber and directed by Janet Marshall. It’s set in a post-revolutionary country somewhere in South America and centre on ambassador Miranda Carruthers as she tries to keep her husband’s dodgy dealings secret and deal with all manner of chaos. It opens on November 13, with evening shows on the 14th, 20th, 21st, and matinees on November 14 and 22. Tickets, $28 (adult), $25 (concession), $22 (members) available by phoning 5446 2500 or at www.coolumtheatre.com.au.

Business profile with SALT Solar

Advertiser Feature

Ever wondered about solar? Thinking of Solar but find it far too overwhelming? You’re not alone… most homeowners want a rooftop Solar energy system, however think finding a solar installer to trust to be a minefield, to say the least. Homeowners are bombarded by television, radio and pop up adds all over the place offering ridiculous pricing and confusing messages about government rebates complete with scare tactic advertising for a solar system. Most homeowners receive their Electricity bill and wish they had solar, and at this time, may connect with a solar installer for a quote, but if they aren’t in the right hands, will become more confused and again shelve the idea of solar. SALT Solar have added non-salesbased information to their website where those considering solar can read all about what a typical “Solar Journey” looks like. This step by step information clearly and easily explains what to look for in a solar installer, including suggestions such as referring to the Clean Energy Council Approved Solar Retailer list for peace of mind decision making. Homeowners can rest assured that Government Rebates do apply and will do so for another 12 years, as we are 3 years into a 15 year program, whereby Queenslanders will get a financial incentive to get a solar system. The only consideration is that the amount that is contributed does reduce each calendar year, meaning the ‘out of pocket’ expense will be 16

higher, as each year passes. Therefore, if you are considering solar for either a residential or commercial property, acting sooner rather than later will benefit. Keep in mind also that financing a solar system proves very beneficial as a solar system is an investment (as opposed to a liability like a boat, or car purchase) with ROI’s anywhere from 40% - 60% (based on a quality 6.6kW PV Solar System). When dealing with SALT Solar’s finance people (an ACCC accredited finance company who specialise in Solar “Green Loans”) once finance is approved, no deposit is required, resulting in no out of pocket expenses until your first repayment, and with no penalties for paying off sooner, finance for solar is a savvy decision. Head to SALT Solar’s website www.saltsolar.com.au and click on “Solar Journey” to appease yourself on how simple it can be. Whilst your there, feel free to fill in the online form, and Tony or Triona at SALT Solar will be in touch to get the ball rolling for you, with the primary aim of providing you with sufficient information to make an informed decision regarding solar.

Chappy’s Corner with Mark Horsfall

Stay engaged with teenagers One of the biggest challenges I hear from parents is the feeling that their teenager is pulling away from them. While this can be very hard for parents, it is perfectly normal behaviour for a teenager who searching for their identity and becoming their own person. Here are four strategies you can use to help maintain a positive relationship with your teen: Actively listen. Teens appreciate being listened to and understood. They probably won’t want your advice but instead you can help guide them on their own path of discovery. Try to understand their perspective even though you may not agree. Be non-judgemental in conversations, paying attention to your tone and emotions. The timing of your conversations is everything (not on the way out the door). Talk about your life and feelings. Have open and honest conversations. Parents often don’t discuss their own thoughts, concerns or challenges with their teenagers. They watch you and the world around them closely so model positive behaviour. Show them how to have good relationships, deal with challenges, resolve conflict and manage emotions as this will lead to a better relationship with your teen. Have Fun. Make time in the business of life to do activities with your teen that they find fun and do it regularly. You will be surprised by the conversations you have with them while having some fun. You may even find that they want to 18

spend more time with you. If you have multiple kids, then have one-on-one time to offset sibling rivalry. Give positive encouragement. Sincere positive praise and feedback will go a long way to reinforcing your relationship. It can be easy to focus on negative behaviour however studies show positive encouragement should be given 5 times more often than negative criticism. Giving feedback on what they did right not just “that’s wonderful”, will help them learn and develop. Even if your teenager is being challenging try to reinforce positive behaviour, attitudes and actions. This does not mean an absence of consequences for inappropriate behaviour. Be encouraged that you can maintain a positive relationship with your child through the teenage years with some intentional effort and hard work. Till next time, happy thinking!
