GROWING A COMMUNITY

HEALTHY HORTICULTURE REMAINS THE FOCUS AT PEREGIAN BEACH’S VEGGIE VILLAGE, BUT FRIENDSHIPS ARE ALSO THRIVING IN THE SECLUDED SANCTUARY JUST OFF DAVID LOW WAY.

President Karen Sell has been involved with the community garden for the past five years and a key reason for joining was the opportunity to meet new people.

“I was aware of it because I’m a gardener anyway, but when I dropped back to part time work, I thought, I’m by myself so it’s a

good way to meet like-minded people,” she said.

With about 100 members ranging from newborn to well into their eighties, the social aspect that first attracted Karen has also drawn in many others during its 15 years of existence.

“We get a lot of people who are new to the area who see it as a good way to meet others,” she said.

“For new people who have just moved in, and especially if they’ve got little kids, it’s a great place for them to run around.”

And if the parents are keen to cultivate their green thumbs, it’s the right place to visit for advice on how to produce a thriving garden on the coast.

Karen said Veggie Village members had a wide range of skills to share and were keen to pass on their knowledge, not only about growing the fresh produce but also putting it to best use.

“We’re very fortunate to have working and retired chefs here, including one who was actually a very high-end corporate chef, so if anybody wants to know how to use warrigal greens or something, she can just straight away tell you off the top of her head,” she said.

“We’ve also got a guy who’s a retired horticulturist – again, we’re lucky to have that sort of knowledge and people with a

willingness to pass it on.”

Because of the coast’s popularity with new arrivals to the country, Veggie Village is also quite a melting pot for different nationalities.

And adding to the diversity are two visually impaired members who manage raised plots built into the site’s original design to encourage participation from anyone with a disability.

Rental money paid for the use of plots, which varies dependent on the size, goes towards the council lease and also general upkeep.

“We’re lucky enough we can afford to pay somebody to mow and he does a great job –people always comment how good the place looks after he’s mowed,” Karen said.

To keep the maintenance costs down and the individual gardens and communal fruit trees looking at their best, regular working bees are held every Tuesday and second Sunday

They are a good time for newcomers to visit for an overview, maybe get their hands a little dirty, then join in for a chat during the popular café break.

Non-members are also encouraged to join in the composting at Veggie Village, with the wider community invited to drop by and deposit their food scraps in the compost system provided for general use.

“They may not want to try it at home as there’s a real science behind doing it right,” Karen said.

“So that’s why we try to educate people with the signage for different things.”

There are basic rules for plot holders using the community garden but nothing too restrictive, although a strictly organic policy is mandatory.

“If people are struggling for whatever reason and not looking after their plot it can affect the rest of the garden – if it’s getting overgrown then it can impact on their neighbours by encouraging pests or weeds,” Karen said.

“So, we’ll sometimes just say, hey what’s going on, and either work with them to get it tidied up or sometimes they’ll just decide it’s too much for them and it’s best to relinquish their plot.”

In general, members keep the produce from their plots for their own use, but there is a fair amount of sharing – maybe if you have a spare pumpkin, you can exchange it for some

crunchy snow peas.

A large shelter shed is a central gathering point in the community garden and is also used to help raise funds for running costs.

At different times it’s been the venue for a wedding and a memorial, and it also hosts weekly tai-chi classes and occasional gardening or art workshops.

The resident pizza oven is also fired up for special occasions, including the popular annual winter solstice gathering, with a sunset lantern parade weaving through the gardens featuring excited children and a couple of “big kids” showcasing a turtle and large star.

Last time it was held, several families organised for their children to perform a wellpractised harvest song, which Karen said was “so cute and totally unexpected”.

VILLAGE

A GENEROUS VIEW ON HELPING

THERE ARE SEVERAL ORGANISATIONS FOR LOCALS TO GET INVOLVED WITH TO RAISE FUNDS FOR GOOD CAUSES WHILE HAVING A GOOD TIME AND THE NOOSAVILLE VIEW CLUB IS ONE OF THEM.

Run by women to raise funds for The Smith Family the members of Noosaville View Club are an inspiring bunch of active ladies.

“It’s a friendship club” says President, Wendy Brooks.

“We get together twice a month to have lunch or enjoy something constructive and entertaining. We invite guest speakers to our meetings, host raffles and put on cooking classes, all to raise funds for disadvantaged children. Some large businesses such as Bunnings, Priceline Pharmacy and Woolies donate goods which are raffled off to members, friends and families.”

There are close to 300 VIEW clubs which stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women all over Australia. VIEW is a leading women’s national volunteer organisation, providing the opportunity for women from all walks of life to meet regularly, establish lasting friendships and help disadvantaged Australian Children. Together, VIEW clubs sponsor more than 1,550 disadvantaged children through the Learning For Life Program.

The Noosaville VIEW club which started in 1999 currently has over 70 loyal members and they look after 11 children from primary school through to university.

“One of our greatest fundraisers is volunteering at the Noosa Triathlon, where we receive a donation for our efforts. We have been involved in this wonderful local event for 20 years, assisting with packing the athlete bags and at check in.”

Some members remember when the

Suzanne Dyer, left, Rhonda Versace, middle, Marguerite Alford, far right.

athletes would come to check in at a caravan in the Lions Park, unlike the enormous marquees which now used in Noosa Woods.

“It was very cosy in those days. We had to write their numbers on the athletes’ arms, which was enormous fun,” Veteran VIEW Club member Faye laughs. “And we were a bit disappointed when things went digital and their numbers were written on wristbands!” she smiles.

But is not just fundraising that brings so much enjoyment to the women at the VIEW club. Receiving letters of thanks from the 11 families they support and hearing their progress is hugely satisfying, as is the social aspect.

The women from the VIEW club are a huge support for each other and bring love and encouragement should they fall on unexpected difficult times such as illness and losing loved ones.

Keeping busy and active has huge mental health benefits and raising funds while enjoying each other’s company is very rewarding.

For anyone keen to join the Noosaville VIEW Club please see their website or come to one of their meeting days held on 4th Thursday of each month at 11am at Tewantin Noosa RSL.

For anyone interested in being involved with the 2022 Noosa Triathlon through volunteering either as an individual or with a group looking to raise funds, please visit the Noosa Tri website. Everyone welcome.

STREET NAMING

In between three sittings of Parliament and travel for public hearings with my Legal Affairs and Safety Committee, it has been wonderful to be able to catch up with the community.

One event was the naming of Tricia’s Way at Beach Access 39, Sunrise Beach. A truly loving gathering of neighbours, family and friends who benefitted from being in the awesome ‘globe’ that radiated from the amazing Tricia Bradford.

In amongst many more events were the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club, merged with the rowers and sailors and testing the new Beckmans/ Cooroy Noosa roundabout which is fabulous and nearing completion. The business case for the remaining stages of this work is expected by year end and I am busy chasing the funding for those!

There is so much happening in many realms, including consultation into Bills.

RENTAL BILLS

One example is the Residential Tenancies Rooming Accommodation (Rent Freeze) Amendment Bill 2022.

To have your say into the Greens proposed two-year freeze on residential rents in QLD, whether as a landlord or tenant, please submit your views by 5pm, October 31. More information is available at www.bit. ly/3Dre14g.

AIRSERVICES REVIEW

Airservices Australia (AA) have provided an update on the Post Implementation Review (PIR) of the Sunshine Coast Airspace Design and in reviewing the Sunshine Coast community suggested alternative flight

path submissions, they have also identified constraints with Brisbane’s airspace.

To get the best possible outcome for both airspace PIRs, AA have identified the need to complete these reviews in parallel.

This will allow consideration of some suggestions from the Sunshine Coast that would otherwise be ruled out now due to the conflict with current Brisbane airspace operations.

AA intend to provide a draft report for Sunshine Coast by the end of 2022.

A Sunshine Coast community meeting will follow the draft report release to enable detailed discussion of the PIR findings, outcomes, and next steps.

You can find more information about the Sunshine Coast Airspace Design Review at www.bit.ly/3RP0zvi.

Director Ian Mackellar has assembled a talented local cast showcasing the array of talent on the Sunshine Coast and can’t wait to present the show from October 27 - November 19.

Choreographer Nicole Kaminski has focused on breathing life into some showstopper numbers and lighting designer Travis Macfarlane will also weave his magic.

Singing in country pubs at age 11, he survived family tragedy to become a teenage TV star.

Discovered by Judy Garland, he married her daughter Liza Minnelli and went on to achieve international stardom as a performer and song writer.

The musical includes many of his best-loved hits: ‘Quiet Please, There’s a Lady On Stage’, ‘Not the Boy Next Door’, ‘Everything Old is New Again’, ‘I Honestly Love You’, ‘I Still Call Australia Home’, ‘Tenterfield Saddler’ and the always-popular ‘I Go to Rio’.

STARLIT SOIREE BRINGS A CROWD

ON A PERFECT SPRING NIGHT UNDER A FULL MOON, THE THIRD ANNUAL SPIRIT OF PEREGIAN FUNDRAISER TOOK PLACE UNDER GIANT TIPIS IN PEREGIAN PARK.

The event raises funds for the future re-building of the Peregian Surf Club and is run by resident’s association Peregian Family and Friends, which has campaigned since 2017 for the revival of the surf club.

President and Event Organiser Leigh McCready said each year, on the closest Saturday to the day the Peregian fires started in 2019, her team organise and run a fundraiser which celebrates the strength of the Peregian community spirit which was on display so strongly that year.

"In 2022, our inspiring guest speakers Jordan Mercer and Richard Thompson shared with us their support and advice for achieving the community’s goal of building a new clubhouse one day – to make the seemingly impossible, possible,” Leigh said.

The event was attended by Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, celebrity chef Adriano Zumbo and wife Nelly and the MC was Hot 91 Breakfast Host Sam Coward.

The 2023 Event is scheduled for Saturday 9th September.

CHICAGO HITS THE STAGE IN COOLUM

WHAT DO PAMELA ANDERSON, CHRISTIE BRINKLEY, BILLY RAY CYRUS AND CUBA GOODING JR HAVE IN COMMON? THEY'VE ALL TAKEN TO THE STAGE AT SOME STAGE AS PART OF THE CAST OF CHICAGO, THE MUSICAL.

Closer to home, the talented troupe at Coolum Theatre Players are stepping up and dressing up to perform the show at Coolum Civic Centre from November 24 - their final show of a busy year.

With direction from Linda Gefken and choreography by Deb Ellison, this artistic team are bringing a fresh vision to one of the best loved musicals of all time.

Linda is well known on the Sunshine Coast for her productions of Ladies in Black, We Will Rock You and many others. She has also appeared on stage herself in performances at Coolum and the Noosa Arts Theatre.

“It’s been a treat working with Deb to create this wonderful show that has such a focus on the choreography. We have brought together the best triple threats the coast has to offer and are really looking forward to bringing our audience a fabulous night out.” Linda explained.

“We have also engaged the services of Jax Audio Systems to both provide and run a full sound design to make sure every word and note can be heard by our audience.”

Deb has choreographed and performed both internationally and here on the Sunshine Coast. She is thrilled to be taking on the role of choreographer in one of her favourite musicals alongside Director Linda Gefken.

"Linda keeps every cog turning and it has been a delight working with such a passionate Director who shares the same vision."

Deb has a passion for choreography and loves seeing a small idea develop and grow, and come to life on stage.

"I love to develop my choreography skills

and you can also never stop growing as a performer, so it is exciting performing alongside all the creative, inspiring cast and taking on this iconic musical."

The musical is set in the 1920s in Chicago – at a time of excess and debauchery, murder and mayhem, gangsters and girls. The free press just loves a sensation and nothing beats a crime of passion.

Roxy Hart will do anything to become a star. Anything! With a scumbag boyfriend and a dull as dishwater husband, any chance of a career on the stage seems to be out of reach.

That is, until she accidentally shoots her boyfriend and she teams up with a show stealing lawyer who will do anything for the right amount of cash.

But Vaudeville star Velma Kelly will stop at nothing to retain her place on the front page, after all she is accused of killing her husband and her sister and she really needs the publicity to keep her career alive after she gets her day in court.

With burlesque, acrobats and fan dancers the story moves in and out of reality and dreams, Cell-Block-Tango-ing its way from the stage into your heart.

Book your tickets on line at www.coolumtheatre.com.au or in person at North Shore Realty. Why not make an evening of it, and have a pre-show meal at the Grillhouse at the Coolum Bowlo.
