SANDFLYS MOVE AND

By Fiona Ewington FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO PUT SOME SWING IN THEIR STEP AND GROOVE IN THEIR HEART, ENJOYING THE LIVE MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT

The Sandflys who chose their name to represent the surf and beach culture of home, are made up of four mature, hardworking, talented musicians who have their own unique technique, performing classic covers, original rock, blues and jazz numbers with an eclectic range of styles and “Sunshine Music,” designed to entertain everyone. With amusing banter between songs acknowledging their current drug of choice are blood pressure tablets, audiences of all ages are keptTheamused.showstill went on recently when Brad their current drummer didn’t get the booking memo.Performing with poise and grace as a three piece, the lead vocalist took a call mid-set explaining to the audience he was on the phone to the absent drummer.

Within minutes, Brad arrived setting up his kit in record time and the performers opened their second set with classic drum heavy surf rock instrumental “Wipeout” setting the Noosa’s Marina alight with upbeat tempo, rhythm and bold attitude.

ESTABLISHED ROCK BAND, THE SANDFLYS, SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF EVERYONE’S AGENDA. Formed four years ago it was during the covid lockdowns that The Sandflys received a regular following and regular bookings.

Whilst these guys have always enjoyed playing music, co-founder and vocalist Ado in previous years was an olive farmer in WA and bass player Chris, a music director and radio presenter. They got together playing at local cafés in Noosa before like-minded and accomplished musicians, Peter Wells joined on lead guitar and Brad on drums. With regular gigs and corporate events, the Sandflys are in demand.

Their recent performance at Noosa’s Runaway Marathon starting at 7am had athletes dancing as they ran the course, with holiday makers and spectators moving to the tunes whilst savouring their morning coffee.

For anyone keen to dust off their dancing shoes and swing their hips to the rocking beats accompanied by the rocking boats at the Noosa’s Marina, the vibe on Fridays and Sundays is vibrant.

With regular performance bookings around our region, whether by the river, at local clubs, bars and breweries, good times are guaranteed when the Sandflys play. Not to be mistaken for the annoying biting insects, these Sandflys are an asset to Noosa’s community and know how to encourage a good time. For performance times and venues see The Sandflys Facebook page.

FROM NOOSA’S RESIDENT 4-PIECE

GROOVE

While the sun goes down the volume is cranked up and devouring the live music performed by these entertaining characters is happy, uplifting and fun.

“We were the only working band on The Sunshine Coast!” he continues.

“Because all our gigs were in the open air, it meant that people could sing, dance and socially distance” explains Ado, one of the founder members.

Informing beach goers that they are swimming near rips or cautioning holidaymakers of surf swells and surges are warnings of potential danger, but surprisingly these instructions are often patronised or ignored, resulting in embarrassed rescued casualties.Ourlifeguards put our lives ahead of their own and often find themselves battling the unpredictable elements to save those in danger. Noticing a surfboard “tombstoning” in dangerous currents means there is a casualty attached and teams of rescuers are deployed to save surfers from the scariest scenarios.

Fiona Ewington GROWING UP WE BELIEVE THAT TO BE A SUPERHERO YOU NEED A SUPERHERO COSTUME, BUT OUR LOCAL SUPERHERO LIFEGUARDS PATROLLING OUR BEACHES SAVING LIVES ON A REGULAR BASIS, WEAR VERY SIMPLE COSTUMES; LIGHT BATHERS AT LEAST AND A LIFE JACKET AT MOST.

Whilst professional lifeguards patrolling our beaches are employed by the local council, volunteer life savers patrol the beach of the club they belong to. Both must go through regular fitness regimes, training, and testing.

On a warm, windless, sunny day, patrolling the beach is an enviable job, but things can turn very quickly.

In the ATV is senior lifeguard Adam McKane and beside him is permanent Lifeguard Keaton Grandemange who started in Nippers as an 11-year-old.

In 1902 it was illegal in Australia to enter the ocean in daylight hours, however in Sydney this law was challenged, and people began to enjoy swimming in the sunshine. Due to the unpredictable surf conditions leading to multiple drownings, groups of volunteers gathered to patrol Bondi Beach which led to the first surf lifesaving club to be formed.Itwasonly in 1982 that women could become active patrolling members of Surf Life Saving Australia.

Rescuing swimmers and surfers from the unpredictable oceans is a very important part of the job, but coastal risk assessments and preventing incidents is an even bigger part.

THE LIFE OF OUR BEACH HEROES

Many of our local beaches are patrolled every day of the year by lifeguards, and during summer weekends and bank holidays, by qualified bronze medallion volunteers. Their jobs are to keep our beaches safe, by educating beachgoers, preventing drownings and taking on the elements should anyone be in trouble in the water.

Asked if Bondi Rescue is a good representation of the life of a lifeguard, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”

By

Their rescue apparatus are polystyrene floating devices and a lot of inbuilt bravery and up to the minute training.

“One minute we were releasing baby turtles into the wild on Noosa Main Beach and the next we were reviving an unconscious casualty found in the water,” Senior Lifeguard Adam McKane tells us.

The season starts in midSeptember.Australiais famous for its beautiful beaches and our region is home to some of the best. And whilst there are a host of recreational activities to be enjoyed in the water, the ocean is a dangerous place. Having lifeguards and surf lifesavers patrolling our beaches is an absolute privilege and a job that requires as much respect by beachgoers as the oceans they are patrolling. We are fortunate to have such amazing superheroes looking after us every day. Asked how many lives they have saved, "it is too many to say". These guys are amazing and so very humble.

SKATE PARK REVAMP AT SUNSHINE BEACH

DESTINATION MANAGEMENT PLAN

Our Sunshine Beach Skate Park will close from 22 August 2022 for around 5 weeks to allow for installation of a new ramp. The new ramp will feature a modern ‘Redz’ ramp surface made from a phenolic resin and paper laminate. The new surface has an improved texture consistent with those used in international vert ramp competitions.

Over the next 12 to 18 months there will also be a range of opportunities for the wider community to have a say. Council aims to collate a wide range of perspectives to achieve a common goal of developing Noosa as a well-managed and sustainable visitor destination for future generations to enjoy and at the same time, ensuring that as a priority our residential amenity is protected and enhanced.

Sadly, over the years, I have seen a steady decline in people volunteering and as a result have even seen some of them close down.Needless to say, our community is in desperate need for these groups to stay in existence as they provide a significant contribution to those underprivileged and inSocietyneed. as a whole will struggle if we lose these groups through a lack of volunteers. It is the unpaid volunteer within these groups who is the glue that holds communities together. The benefits of volunteering can be enormous. Let’s explore some. Volunteering will connect you to group of people that share a common purpose which in turn can help you to develop a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment. When engaging with a community group you will often establish friendships with people that are outside of your normal circle. They are a fantastic place to meet new people, if you are new to a community, and can help you feel connected and valued.

Children watch everything parents do and learn by example. By giving back to the community, you’ll show them first-hand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help other people. It will also help them develop their social skills, self-esteem, confidence and new skills that might not be otherwise developed.

As a result, I’ve had the privilege to form partnerships with many of the fantastic community groups within our community.

COMMON SENSE WILL BECOME AN ENFORCEABLE ROAD RULE IN QUEENSLAND FROM SEPTEMBER 16 WHEN MOTORISTS WILL BE REQUIRED BY LAW TO SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER WHEN THEY COME ACROSS FLASHING LIGHTS.

Eastern Beaches News - September 2022 15

“This new rule will require Queenslanders to change the way they drive around roadside incidents to give responders a safe space to do their job - so they can continue to help the people they’re there to protect and ensure everyone gets home safely."

“We know many people already do it, but this change makes it clear that you must do it to keep the people helping in an incident safe from harm.

The rule, which applies to ambulances, police cars, fire trucks, and transport enforcement vehicles, as well as breakdown assistance providers such as RACQ, tow trucks and assistance vehicles, will be enforced with a $432 fine and three demerit points.

“An education campaign will run to make sure people are aware of the changes, which will come into effect from 16 September (2022).”

“Emergency responders, including our roadside crews, put their lives on the line each and every day by working in high-risk and often high-speed environments to rescue stranded motorists, but one wrong move by a passing driver could end in tragedy.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the rules are aimed at keeping first responders safe on the roadside.

“We have been advocating for this change since 2017, with 90 percent of our members in favour of making this lifesaving road rule a reality, so we are incredibly pleased the Government is taking action,” Mr Toms said.

“The rule is simple – if you see flashing lights at the roadside, move over and slow down.

RACQ Group Executive - Assistance, Glenn Toms, said the Club congratulated the Queensland Government on the vital road safety rule.

“Our emergency service and first responders do an incredible job, and they play a critical role in roadside incidents,” Mr Bailey said.

More information about road safety initiatives can be found at streetsmarts.initiatives.qld.gov.au/https://
