JOBS HUBS REVEALS TOP JOBS

HOSPITALITY, TRAVEL AND TOURISM HAS COME OUT ON TOP AS THE MOST POPULAR INDUSTRY SECTOR SEARCHED FOR BY JOB SEEKERS ON THE SUNSHINE COAST.

With nearly 1,000 local jobs listed since its launch in December 2022, The Jobs Hub, a collaboration between Study Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, has started to gather key market data to share with businesses.

After just three months in the market, the new website has attracted a strong following, reporting that early users spend an average 3.27 minutes on the site and view almost nine pages per session, well above industry benchmarking stats.

The most sought-after job over the past two months included a program events and social media coordinator at NatureArt Lab in

Maroochydore.

This was followed by customer service and contact centre manager roles at IT and Services giant Genpact, glazier position, ranger position, registered nurse at an intensive care unit at Birtinya, surveyor position in Maleny, commercial attendant at Sea Life Mooloolaba, support officer with Sunshine Coast Council and a team member role at Officeworks.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said council had collaborated with business and industry representatives to develop the Jobs Hub as a central tool to help the region thrive.

“We’ve heard from so many employers about the difficulty in finding staff, and it’s really

encouraging to see that initial roll out of the site has delivered exceptional results,” Mayor Jamieson said.

Kilcoy Global Foods Vice President for People and Culture Bevan Gibbs said he was delighted Sunshine Coast Council had invested in an innovative online platform to connect local industry with job seekers.

“The Jobs Hub will play a key role in generating leads as we look to expand our workforce and recruit around 200 new jobs for our manufacturing facility currently being constructed at Caloundra’s Corbould park estate.

“As we get closer to our opening date, we will be advertising a range of new Sunshine Coast based jobs in the food industry on the Jobs Hub from team leaders to logistics specialists, so I encourage job seekers to jump onto the site, sign up and see what opportunities are on offer.”

Jobs currently up for grabs on the site include a strategic project coordinator at

University of the Sunshine Coast ($100,000 salary), sous chef in Maleny ($70,000) and a labourer in Caloundra ($32 per hour), along with some very exciting opportunities at Australia Zoo for those keen on becoming elephant or tiger keepers.

Job Seekers can become a member of the Jobs Hub for free and enjoy multiple benefits including finding local jobs quickly and easily, job alerts and create and/or upload their CV.

An extension of the Sunshine Coast Jobs Hub is the Sunshine Coast Student Jobs Hub, which connects students and graduates with industry and job opportunities on the Sunshine Coast.

FREE CHANCE TO BOOST GARDEN

LOCAL GARDENERS ARE BEING URGED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE MULCH OFFERED BY COUNCIL TO BOOST THEIR GARDENS IN READINESS FOR WINTER

As the colder winter months near the Sunshine Coast Regional Council has reminded ratepayers that they have the chance to boost their gardens with free mulch from the local tips.

Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said an abundance of mulch was now ready thanks to the new garden organics bin being embraced across the Sunshine Coast.

“Once collected, our region’s garden organics are taken to a council resource recovery centre to be processed,” Cr Suarez said.

“When you recycle your garden waste, it gets turned into mulch – creating new life from old.

“The material is ground into a mulch and placed in windrows to ‘mature’.

“Between July 2022 – when the expanded service began – to February 2023, more than 14,800 tonnes of kerbside-collected garden organics have been diverted from landfill and recycled and is now ready for collection and reuse by our community to place on their gardens.”

Cr Suarez said a process was in place to clean up garden waste loads.

“A recent campaign to educate the community on how to use the garden bin correctly, coupled with a significant decontamination effort, has produced a really usable end product.

“From garden waste to garden resource, mulch is a great way to add nutrients back into the soil while helping to stabilise it, preventing it washing away.”

Cr Suarez said a good idea was for gardeners to search “mulch and crushed concrete sales” on council’s website for availability before making a visit.

More information on the expanded garden organics service is available at www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/gardenbin

THE ANNUAL ROTARY NOOSA DAYBREAK BOOKFEST EVENT IS BACK FOR 2023

Basketball courts will be replaced with tables overflowing with books at Noosa Leisure Centre from April 28 to 30 as Rotary Noosa Daybreak puts on its biggest fundraiser of the year.

The annual Bookfest Noosa is the culmination of a year’s worth of work by members who have been collecting and sorting secondhand book donations.

There will be tens of thousands of books available for purchase over the three days and the proceeds will be dedicated to local projects including the homeless.

Noosa Daybreak president Ken Kipping said the majority of the money raised would go to the local area.

Previously funds raised from Bookfest have

supported new treatments for suicidality, facilities for Noosa Coastguard, support for the local programs for the Salvation Army, research into treatments for Prostate Cancer.

Local organisations supported by Bookfest include Sunshine Butterflies, Hear and Say Centre, Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club, Childhood Cancer Support, Noosa Hospital, Sunshine Coast Rescue Helicopter, University of the Sunshine Coast and local youth charities.

Mental health awareness and treatment has also been supported directly and in partnership with other Rotary Clubs and The University of the University of the Sunshine Coast Thompson Institute.

All books have been thoroughly sorted and only the best quality books will be offered for sale at $3 each. Childrens from $1.

The Noosa Leisure Centre is at Wallace Drive in Noosaville.

Experiencing back pain with bending, lifting or gardening?

There can be many reasons and causes for lower back pain and there is no receipt fix or ‘one size fits all’ approach to managing lower back pain However there can be some common contributors! Here are our favourite tips for lower back pain:

Use your hips! Correct bending and lifting technique means your hips hinge back and your knees bend. This means you need both mobility and strength in your hips.

Limit the amount of time spent in a bent position! Even with the best posture, sustained bending can be problematic. If you are gardening, stand up every 5-10 mins, place your hands on your hips and reverse this posture with a gentle back bend Take regular breaks and walk Switch your core on for heavier lifts. Avoid lifting and twisting at the same time as this places unwanted pressure on lower back discs.

Like to strengthen the core or improve your posture?

Organisers say The Jungle Giants are channelling hope, love and a dance-pop sensibility into their most irresistible and genre-defying work yet.

Driven by optimism, creative freedom and a desire to “go weird, go funny, and not be

scared,” The Jungle Giants are not to be missed.

GOOD NEWS ON BAIL BREACH LAW

UPDATE FROM PARLIAMENT

Last month in Parliament we witnessed a watershed moment when Labor finally, after 8 years of watering down the youth justice laws, adopted the LNP policy of breach of bail. While this alone is no silver bullet for solving the youth crime epidemic, it is an important step forward. We need to give police the resources and tough laws they need to do their job, and keep our community safe.

CCTV INSTALLED

As part of the ongoing works to bust congestion and improve safety on our roads, TMR has just finished installing CCTV on Yandina-Coolum Road, at the intersection with Barnes Lane in Coolum. The CCTV will be used by TMR’s traffic management centre to monitor traffic flow in the area, and to adjust the traffic signals to better manage the congestion during peak periods.

TRAILBLAZING WOMEN

I was honoured to host a table of exceptional local businesswomen as part of International Women’s Day last month. This trailblazing group of women are achieving great success in their respective fields, taking out state and national awards, and not only are they great role models for young women setting out on their careers, they’re using their innovation to become leaders in their industries, from right here in our own backyard.

Congratulations to Ami Bateman and Sian Murray of Pleasant State, USC Lecturer and social media expert Dr Karen Sutherland, Emma Gibbons of Huds and Toke, and Ellie Degraeve of Go for Zero.

COOL NEWS FOR COOLUM MEALS ON WHEELS

After a challenging couple of years dealing with equipment failures, it was wonderful to see Coolum Meals on Wheels score big

in the latest round of Gambling grants, securing $29,986 for a new fridge/freezer. This funding couldn’t have come at a better time for the organisation, which is busier than ever providing nutritious meals and social contact for some of the most vulnerable in our community.

Applications are now open for Round 117, and close on 31 May, 2023.

SHADE FIX FOR PEACHTREE PARK

PEACHTREE PARK

New shade sails are due to be installed at Peachtree Park by April 21.

I know this is a popular park for families and have attended a number of children’s parties there throughout the years.

There will be some disruption to use of the playground with it being closed when the posts and shade sails are being installed (17-21 April), weather and site conditions permitting.

Apologies to anyone planning a party over those dates. The park is expected to reopen to the public on the April 22, 2023.

LANDSCAPE PLAN FOR LIONS PARK

I encourage you to take the time to provide feedback on the landscape plan for Lions and Norrie Job Park before April 3.

While it’s not in Peregian, it’s the closest park area to the Springs in Coolum and accessible by bike via the pedestrian overpass at the end of Havana Rd West.

This important green space, between the beach and the road, needs a freshen up to make it more welcoming and accessible for all our community.

• Two previous rounds of community engagement in 2016 and 2022 have helped to inform the landscape plan which includes: major drainage upgrade works;

• increasing open green space – reshaping the land previously occupied by the open grassed drain so that it is more usable;

• new accessible pedestrian pathway;

• new public amenities building; new picnic and barbecue shelters and seating;

• new outdoor exercise stations, drinking fountain and bike racks;

• a 240m continuation of the three metre wide shared pedestrian and cycle path;

• new park entry signage, landscaping and shade trees;

• an upgrade to the existing beach shower and bus shelter;

• and investigations for a potential pump track area. Visit haveyoursay. sunshinecoast.qld.gov. au to fill in the online survey.

DIABOLICAL DIABETES CHANGES

DIABETES ADVOCACY

15,000 Australian families have had the rug pulled out from underneath them after the Labor Government axed a life-changing medicine from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) which is used to manage diabetes.

Without any consultation or support for the patients impacted, the Government cut the medication from the PBS and which sent the price soaring from as low as $7 to up to $280 per script.

Local student Freya (14), who I first met in 2016, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 11 months of age. Freya and her mum Jackie are just one of 15,000 families who will suffer from this decision.

Although I welcome the recent decision to extend Fiasp on the PBS for a further six months, this is just a band-aid solution. I will continue this campaign for a permanent solution beyond October on behalf of Freya and the 15,000 other Australians who rely on Fiasp.

AUKUS AGREEMENT

AUKUS is the former Coalition Government’s greatest legacy and I pay tribute to the Labor Government for honouring the agreement, including backing nuclearpropelled submarines.

We live in uncertain and volatile times, and we need to work more closely with our allies to ensure peace and to defend our values and our way of life.

While the Coalition is guaranteeing bipartisan support, we are calling on the government to be upfront about the cost to the budget. We’ll hold them to account on not just costs, but also on timing and sequencing of the project.
