HOLIDAY FUN Find your own style of Christmas cheer

P6

It’s Christmas lights time in Peregian Springs and Peregian Breeze and already there’s plenty to look at, like this giant Santa spotted at Maidstone Crescent.

LIGHTING UP CHRISTMAS ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT LIVING IN OUR REGION, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WITH YOUNG CHILDREN, IS THE WAY THE COMMUNITY EMBRACES EVENTS SUCH AS CHRISTMAS AND HALLOWEEN.

As the clock ticks closer to Christmas 2021, the generous spirits out there with a love of lights have been busy decorating their homes with an amazing array of Christmas displays. Peregian Springs News - December 2021

While there are too many streets to list them all here, some streets that we know already are well worth a look in Peregian Springs are The Avenue, Kingsmill Circuit, Dornoch Way, Doral Drive, Gracemere Boulevard, and Balgownie Drive. In a bid to provide a comprehensive list for locals, we’ve started a thread on our socials at www.facebook. com/peregianspringsnews and we’d love it if people were to add their street in the comments. Have a great Christmas everyone!

FROM THE ED’S DESK I’m not sure about anyone else, but for me 2021 has been one wild ride! The challenges of COVID-19 and the uncertainty it has added to just about everything we take for granted school, travel, shopping, eating out, work and events like weddings has been remarkable. It’s also been a coming of age in a way for this area I’ve called home for nearly 10 years now. The final stages of development are just about done. The developers behind the masterplanned community are moving on to their next projects after nearly 20 years and as residents we will see the final houses gradually built on the hilltop land near the water tower and the units, and commercial buildings in whatever mix ends up being approved near the shopping centre.

The old sales centre near the golf club on Longwood Drive has been demolished, and a childcare centre will open there next year. Speaking of the golf club, it’s been great to see it strengthening as a business, with new caterers in place and a growing field of top golfers calling the course home. If our spies are right, 10-year-old prodigy Ellianna MacRae may well have taken out the ladies club championship in November with 40 points amazing effort. We also heard former St Andrew’s student, water polo keeper, Nic Porter, is smashing it playing for the University of Southern California having clocked up 614 saves so far ranking him at number 6 in the USC greats list, and still climbing. Congrats Nic! Finally, thanks to you, our readers and advertisers, for your continued support. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Geoff

RESIDENTS TAKE CHARGE OF PBC THE FINALISATION OF DEVELOPMENT IN PEREGIAN SPRINGS AND THE HANDING OVER OF FINAL LOTS OF LAND IN A NEW COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT STATEMENT REGISTERED WITH SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL HAVE LED TO CHANGES AT THE TOP OF THE RIDGES PRINCIPAL BODY CORPORATE COMMITTEE.

As of November 16 East Village Ridges representative, Roger Cook, has been appointed to the roles of Chairperson and Secretary of the PBC. The dissolving of three “developer lots” as part of the new scheme, removed the rights for those lots to have a seat on the committee meaning Doug Merritt and Seamus O’Connor’s positions as Chairperson and Secretary became vacant and an ordinary committee spot occupied by Gary Kordic did too.

The Vote Outside of Committee also confirmed the appointment of Michael Healy (The Pavillion Peregian), Noel Loaney (South East Village Ridges) and John Lobb (The Ridge) as resident owner members on the Committee. David Villani remains on the Committee as Treasurer, along with Janine Walker and Andrew Flynn as ordinary members. The last remaining “developer” lots in the scheme are owned by Billy Lids Pty Ltd at Koel Circuit (the Tavern block and the units opposite). Billy Lids have applied to the PBC to be removed from the Ridges scheme - a motion that will be voted on at future date. Mr Cook said the PBC was now working to understand the impact of the changes in relation to the number of developer lots listed in the CMS and how it would affect the budget of the PBC in the years ahead.

LOCAL NEWS

NOW IS THE TIME TO HAVE A SAY AS WE HEAD TOWARDS THE END OF 2021 THE FUTURE OF THE LAST MAJOR LOTS OF LAND TO BE DEVELOPED IN PEREGIAN SPRINGS ESTATE IS BECOMING CLEARER.

On November 25, Sunshine Coast Regional Council sent Billy Lids Pty Ltd approval for their development application MCU21/0080 for the block on the Motorway side of Koel Circuit near Coles. The approval allows for the building of 38 units, four SOHO units and a Food & Drink Outlet. Original plans for the site, lodged nearly two years ago had been for 72 units. Metal fencing has now gone up around the site and it is expected drainage and site works will commence in the near future. Clearing and early groundworks have also started on the final blocks within the Pavilions precinct which has approval for 51 residential

dwellings carried over from the original masterplanning of the estate in 2009. Plans for the site include two and three storey townhouses and two small unit blocks designed to be built into the contours of the hill so the structures remain within Council height limits. The plans lodged for this project can be found on www.developmenti.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au by searching on the application code OPW17/2264. The final piece of the puzzle is the application for the high side of Koel Circuit. Public information signage has been erected for this proposal now, with residents given until December 13 to submit their thoughts to Sunshine Coast Regional Council. The proposal is for a Material Change of Use for a Hotel (Tavern) and Multiple Dwelling Units (50 Units) on Lot 3291 SP282537 at 6

Koel Circuit. The plans have the Tavern situated on the Shopping Centre side of the block’s boundary, with the units in three joined blocks at the rear of the block adjacent to existing residential developments and the Arcare site. Entry would be off Koel Circuit. The full application for this project is available by phoning the Council on 5475 9975 or searching www.developmenti.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au for MCU21/0248. Anyone keen to make a submission to Council on the development can write a letter and send it to Sunshine Coast Council, Locked Bag 72, Sunshine Coast Mail Centre, 4560 or email mail@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au referencing the application number and outlining your thoughts on the project. Council is the now the owner of the other large, yet-to-be-developed, block at the entry to the Recreation Club earmarked for a future community centre. Next steps on this block are unlikely to be known until early next year.

SURF LIFE SAVING WITH JOHN RODERICK

NIPPERS NUMBERS UP OVER 200 An update on the project to re-establish an independent, community-based Surf Lifesaving Club at Peregian Beach (PBSLSC). Life Saving operations at Peregian Beach remain under the direction of Noosa Heads SLSC for the 2021/22 season. So far, patrols this season have continued along well, with volunteer Peregian patrols covering Saturdays with professional Lifeguards, funded by NHSLSC, making up the Sundays and major public holidays. Peregian volunteer lifesaving numbers and skills have not allowed the volunteer base to start taking any of the Sunday patrols back yet. A local Peregian Beach Working Group, made up of Peregian-based NHSLSC members is however, working hard in the background to ensure the new Club has a sound basis to commence independent operations from 2022/23 onwards. Pleasingly, we have seen a further increase this season in the Peregian Beach Nipper program from 165 children last season to 205 at present. It is a great sign for the future to see the enthusiasm from the parent involvement for 14

the successful Sunday programs. On the beach, we have 70 patrolling members across 5 full patrol groups with further support in the form of a 6th patrol being provided by the Brisbane Surf Lifesaving Service (part of Surf Lifesaving Queensland (SLSQ), the organisation’s governing body). Thanks to NHSLSC we are currently having new members trained to have the necessary qualifications to join our patrol teams which will enable us to expand our patrol teams and go further towards the expected full weekend coverage of volunteer surf lifesaving clubs. Under the guidance of the Working Group, the new Club is planning a rejuvenation of the social aspect of Surf Club life with Club Nights and other social gatherings over the coming months/years. We strongly encourage local community members to support these events as the task of building a new Club in such a short time frame is large and ambitious. Your involvement would be appreciated in any way. Contact us at hello@peregiansurfclub.com Cheers John Roderick peregianspringsnews.com.au

LOOK AFTER YOUR HEALTH AT CHRISTMAS Christmas can be a joyful, busy (and sometimes a stressful!) time of year. Social events, food excess, family expectations and the shopping frenzy can all play havoc with your health! Here are our favourite tips to keep you happy and healthy this silly season. • Stay active - Social events mean exercise can be forgotten. Try early morning exercise - even 15 mins can help. • Start each day with a glass of water - a simple effective healthy habit. • Down time and nature allow yourself some quiet time.

Peregian Springs News - December 2021

• Footwear - walking in unsupportive thongs can create pain! Wear supportive footwear or arch support thongs. • Kindness - some people find Xmas difficult, a simple act of kindness can make someone’s day • Review your year and recall your joys, hold gratitude for the special moments. Gratitude is great for your health! • Unplug - Your presence with your family and friends is more important than presents. Turn off devices! • Investing in experiences as gifts to share with loved ones brings longer lasting memories.

DIG DEEP FOR FAMILIES IN NEED THE TEAM AT WHITE TIGRESS IN COOLUM USED THEIR FIRST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT THE END OF NOVEMBER TO LAUNCH INTO A CHRISTMAS GIVING CAMPAIGN IN SUPPORT OF CHILDREN AND MUMS LIVING IN REFUGES AS THEY ESCAPE FROM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

Co-founder Christine Lynn, pictured right with SunnyKids’ Sue Gilbert, said they would be setting up Christmas trees at their shop just up from Coles at Birtwill Street in Coolum, and at the Pool Cafe and Coles at Peregian Springs. Christine said she was joining SunnyKids in calling for donations of presents, wrapped with a label including gender or age for children, or simply Mum for the Mums. “Let’s spoil those in need this year and

spread the Christmas cheer,” she said. “Together, we can make a difference.” The White Tigress store sells donated clothes and donates profits back to charities helping families suffering the adversity of domestic violence. The Coolum store is also a drop off point for DV Safe Phones where old mobiles can be donated for repurposing for DV victims.

COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

PARK WORKS ON THE WAY The park in Oakmont Court will receive an upgrade with some much needed shade sails being installed over playground equipment. I received requests for shade sails at Peachtree Park as well, however I could not fund both in the one financial year and have already added Peachtree Park to the list for next year. A new shelter with table and seating will be installed at the dog park at The Avenue. This is a very popular park, especially in the afternoons, and I’m sure this addition will be welcomed by dog owners. Although I can’t fund a wine fridge to be installed with the shelter, I thank the resident for the suggestion and the laugh.

site within the Springs that is zoned or allocated for this type of facility. A report and findings will be prepared during December and I hope to share the outcomes with you in January.

DEVELOPMENT WATCH

TURTLE NESTING

A number of private developments have had some activity. The child care centre on Longwood Drive looks like it will start construction soon, a number of discussions are being had between the developer and body corporate regarding the Pavilions development, and the development at Koel Circuit has been approved for 38 units and 4 Soho units. This has been a vast decrease from the previous application for 72 units. Please go to developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au if you would like to review the plans.

Turtle nesting season is here so from November to May, please look out for turtle tracks, new nests and emerging hatchlings. If you do see signs of turtles on our beaches, please watch your step and contact Coolum and North Shore Coast Care on 0478 435 377. You can help the turtles by keeping our beaches clean.

COMMUNITY CENTRE CONSULTATION

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

HAVE YOUR SAY ON MOTORWAY MOTORWAY UPGRADE

Following years of lobbying, we’ve finally secured funding to start planning the duplication of the Sunshine Motorway, and the upgrades to the interchange with Yandina Coolum Road, and the roundabout at School Road. Consultation on this multi-million infrastructure project is happening now, and its important that our local community has their say on what the upgrades will look like. The $1.75m planning study will include: • Duplicating the Motorway from 2 to 4 lanes from David Low Way to the Yandina Coolum Road roundabout • Upgrades to the interchange • Upgrades to School Road intersection. To get involved, visit yoursay-projects.tmr. qld.gov.au/sunshine-motorway-duplication. This will be a massive infrastructure project that will future proof our local road network, and I urge you to take this opportunity to have your say. PLEASE NOTE – consultation closes on 10 December. LANDMARK LEGISLATION

During the final sitting week of the year, I was pleased to see landmark legislation be passed to help ensure the worst of the worst offenders are kept behind bars. This legislation, which I referred to as ‘Sian’s Law’ in my speech, was the direct result of the efforts of murdered schoolgirl Sian Kingi’s family to keep convicted killer Barry John Watts behind bars. I worked closely with the family when we became aware of Watts’ parole application and as a result, we tabled a petition signed by more than 72,000 that called on the State Government to reject his parole bid. Thanks to this overwhelming community support, Watts’ parole bid was dismissed, and tough new laws were announced to make it much 22

more difficult for the worst of the worst offenders, like Watts and Brett Cowan, to ever see the light of day again. Now, for the first time ever in this state, victims’ families can take comfort in the fact that life does mean life. SURF’S UP

With Christmas just around the corner, who wouldn’t want to win a brand new BeachBeat surfboard? I was pleased to be able to support our local P&Cs by donating a shortboard to each of our schools to raffle off as part of their end of year celebrations. With beautiful beaches and excellent surf right at our doorstop, its no wonder surfing is such a popular pastime, and its great to see younger surfers carving up the waves. Contact your local school for all the details, and ticket purchases but don’t delay, time is running out. SEASON’S GREETINGS

From my family to yours, best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. After what has been another difficult and challenging year thanks to COVID, I sincerely hope you get the chance to reconnect with family and friends that borders have kept apart. STAY IN TOUCH

If you have any State Government matters to discuss with me, drop by the office at 11 Heathfield Rd, Coolum Beach, call 5406 7900 or email ninderry@parliament.gov.au peregianspringsnews.com.au

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

BRING ON AN OLYMPIC RAIL LINE HEAVY RAIL TO LEAVE THE STATION

The Sunshine Coast needs a heavy rail connection from Beerwah to the Maroochydore CBD and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games are our best chance to deliver it. I recently proposed a realistic plan for real action as a compromise to the State Government’s inaction on fast rail. And we’ve had a win. Transport Minister Mark Bailey has publicly supported my proposal, in principle, and has agreed to consider the concept early next year. This is a positive step, but there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure this project really does leave the station. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3FMVygj ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE:

The 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide the Sunshine Coast with a once in a lifetime opportunity. An opportunity to think big and be bold. That’s exactly what I’ve done this month by unveiling my personal vision for a world-class entertainment centre to be built in the heart of the Maroochydore CBD to host the Olympic Basketball preliminaries. If we were to secure such a venue, it’s legacy would be the most iconic landmark on the Sunshine Coast with a capacity to host major

sporting events, exhibitions and conferences as well as world-class performing arts and theatre. Learn more about this vision here: https://bit.ly/3FMVygj MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

DON’T WAIT TO BE A BETTER YOU! TODAY IS THE DAY!!!

Were you one of many people who made a New Year’s resolution as the clock struck midnight on December 31st? In the majority of cases, those heartfelt promises are long forgotten by the time you reach February let alone this time of year. So why do New Year’s resolutions usually fail? My theory is that the problem lies within the first two words of those promises. When we say, “This year I will be a better husband/ wife’’ or “This year I will try harder to control my temper” or “swear less” or “smoke less”. Whatever the resolution may be, we are giving ourselves 365 days to get around to making any changes. There is no urgency, no immediate action required. We don’t set specific start points or think purposely about the resolution or things we want to change, leaving room for us to put it off. If there are things that you would really like to change, or a resolution you haven’t started yet, can I suggest that you replace the words ‘this year’ with the word ‘today’. When a person decides, “Today I will…” It requires action and commitment, resolve and determination. It indicates serious intention that is vital if we are to make a change. If there are areas in your life that you know need changing, start today at making those improvements and changes. Don’t wait

for New Years to come around to make a resolution that you probably won’t fulfil. You are the one who will benefit greatly if you don’t delay. It’s never too late to achieve your New Year’s resolution or make the change you always dreamed of. On a different note, from my family to your family I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. In the midst of all the busyness this time of year can bring, remember the true spirit of Christmas and show kindness to those around us. Try having someone over who might be on their own, buy a ham for a family lacking money, a gift for a child who won’t be getting one or donate to a charity. Embrace the spirit of kindness this festive season! See you in the new year. * Mark Horsfall is a Chaplain at Coolum State High School

GOLF

GOLF TIP - WITH PEREGIAN GOLF PRO KATELYN MUST AN EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ALL - HOW TO HIT IT FURTHER WITH YOUR DRIVER RIGHT NOW!

Coming into the festive season and nearly the start of a new year I wanted to start you all with a head start to your golfing resolutions in 2022. A big component of golf is being able to hit your driver, the club that has the ability to go the furthest, on more fairways and closer to the greens. Club speed and hitting the gym is certainly one option, but there could be an easier approach.

For every 1 Mph your gain in swing speed you gain 2 metres in distance. For every 1 degree upward you strike your golf ball, generally not exceeding 3-4 degrees, you gain 4 metres of distance and you reduce the spin on the golf ball meaning you will be more accurate. Follow these 4 simple steps to increase your driving distance and accuracy in a few swings. 1. Tee your golf ball up high, so half of the ball is above the top line of the club. 2. Position your golf ball inside your lead heel 3. Pick a target up high 4. Angle your lead shoulder and hip together slightly upwards to promote an up action Happy golfing, Katelyn

When the time comes, we will be there for you. Personalised and caring service, appointments from your home and returning to your home.
