Protective screens will be installed on Havana Rd pedestrian bridge this month.

HAVANA BRIDGE WORK PEREGIAN SPRINGS RESIDENTS CAN EXPECT SOME TRAFFIC DELAYS ON THE SUNSHINE MOTORWAY OVER THE COMING MONTH AS WORK BEGINS ON SAFETY SCREENS FOR THE HAVANA WAY PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE.

Starting from February the Department of Transport and Main Roads will have staff on site installing a protective screen along the full length of the footbridge. It follows earlier works to improve fencing at either end of the bridge to restrict pedestrian traffic to the Motorway. It is expected the construction Peregian Springs News - February 2022

will take up to five weeks to complete. The first week will involve work between 6am and 3pm Monday to Friday, followed by night works between 6pm and 6am Sunday to Thursday. Pedestrians will be able to use the bridge during the day, however it will be closed at night during the works. Traffic may be diverted away from the site through David Low Way and there will be temporary lane closures, stop and go control and reduced speed limits. The TMR has said nose, dust, and vibrations from machinery are to be expected. The project office number is 5451 7055 or email northcoast@tmr.qld.gov.au

FROM THE ED’S DESK

As this month’s edition hits the streets its lookly likely the school year will be kicking off for our local school children, although it is still unclear just what conditions they’ll be attending under when it comes to masks and social distancing. For me, late December and January have been the month when COVID has really hit home. Rather than knowing people interstate or overseas who have caught it, people I work with every day have been off work weeks at a time as the virus works its way through their system, and through their family. The isolation periods and uncertainty have wreaked havoc on local businesses, forcing shortened hours and even closed doors as

they simply do not have the staff to stay open without completely exhausting those left standing. Now, more than ever, it is important we all back our local businesses with our business, our recommendations and support to help get them through this time. In the midst of these challenges it was great to hear from Brad and Shannon at Tint N Windows, locals who have been long term supporters of Peregian Springs News, about a new offering at their business. From February, they are going to start offering car window tinting as well as house and commercial window tinting. It’s a good news story of a business that started operating from home with just Brad and Shannon in 2015, has focused on quality service and expertise, and now employees half a dozen people with its own workspace at Coolum. Congratulations team! Geoff

MASSIVE BOOST FOR MUSIC A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GRANT OF $560,000 WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARDS PUTTING THE MUSICIANS OF THE AUSTRALIAN ROMANTIC AND CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA BACK ON THE ROAD IN 2022.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien was on hand at the Pool Cafe in January to announce the funding for the group which has ties back to Peregian Springs via its General Manager and Co-Artistic Director Nicole van Bruggen. “We are incredibly encouraged by this concrete endorsement of our work from the Federal Government through their Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Funding,” Ms Bruggen said. “Freelance musicians and arts workers have been really struggling over the past two years, and this announcement is not only going to

put food on their table, it also acknowledges that small and agile organisations such as the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra are in a key position to pull the music industry out of the reality of this pandemic.” The funding will help deliver a National Tour and also to strengthen the group’s education pathways through its youth orchestra. REC CLUB TRANSFER PROGRESS WHILE THE CLOCK IS TICKING ON THE TRANSFER, OR OTHERWISE, OF THE RIDGE’S REC CLUB TO BECOME THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PRINCIPAL BODY CORPORATE RATHER THAN DEVELOPER FKP, IT APPEARS POSITIVE NEGOTIATIONS HAVE BOUGHT THE PBC SOME TIME.

Principal Body Corporate Chairman Roger Cook said the current access agreement, allowing Ridges’ residents to use the FKPowned facilities as part of their body corporate rights, was due to expire in February. Mr Cook said FKP had indicated they were willing to extend the agreement while the PBC sought quotations and advice on how they should go about taking on ownership of the facility. “The extension will be on the basis that the

4

Body Corporate (including the subsidiaries) must hold the votes on the transfer by the end of April 2022 and that if the vote is carried, take possession of the Rec Club by the end of June 2022.” Mr Cook said the PBC had received an initial operating/maintenance report to review and was working through a range of quotes for building inspections, equipment inspection, and pool inspection in order to understand what they were taking on as part of the “As is, Where is” offer made by FKP. He said there had been verbal discussion and subsequent written correspondence around shortening the offered 100-year leaseback element of FKP’s original handover proposal to 30 years and providing continued access to the Community Liaison Officer’s office until 2026 when the CLO contract expires.

peregianspringsnews.com.au

In broad terms, the latest version of the proposal is for FKP to hand over ownership of the Rec Club to the Principal Body Corporate, along with the responsibility and costs involved in the structural maintenance, cleaning and security of the leased and shared areas. Rather than the PBC paying to buy the Rec Club building and lands at market rates, it will instead forgo the rental income from the commercial space at the Rec Club (pool café and old sales office) for a period of time – possibly 30 years. FKP would pay the PBC a peppercorn rent to control those spaces for the period of time (say 30 years) and would then charge its own rate to potential tenants and use that money towards the cost of handing over the Rec Club asset without an upfront sale.

WHAT’S ON

STAGE FUN FOR A GREAT CAUSE THERE’S SURE TO BE A FEW LAUGHS AND SOME GREAT FUN HAD AT COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE IN MARCH AND APRIL WHEN COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS TACKLE TIM FIRTH’S CALENDAR GIRLS.

The show is based on the true story of a group of middle-aged Yorkshire women who decided to take off their clothes and pose for a calendar to raise money for cancer research after one of their husband’s died with Leukaemia. In keeping with the spirit of the play, and the movie of the same name starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, the Coolum Theatre Players cast will be producing a calendar too, with all money raised from its sale going to the Katie Rose Cottage in Noosa which provides hospice care for those at the end of their lives. Director Barbara Ryan said she was excited to be bringing the show to the stage. “This play is a particular favourite of mine and is the second time I’ve been given the opportunity to direct it,” Barbara said. “Whilst it may be known for its nude scene, the story is so much more. It’s a beautiful story of a group of women who are there for each other through life’s ups and downs, through the fun times and through the dark days of deep loss.”

8

The cast calendar will be on sale during the run of the show, with money raised to go towards comfy lounge chairs for guests at Katie Rose Cottage. Tickets are available through North Shore Realty in Coolum or online at www. coolumtheatre.com.au. Shows on March 25 and 26 at 7.30pm, March 27 at 2pm, April 1 and 2 at 7.30pm and April 3 at 2pm. COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

NEW YEAR BRINGS PARK WORKS HAPPY NEW YEAR

I hope the weather over the festive season didn’t disrupt your plans too much. It did throw a few of council’s timelines out for some construction projects however, including the road closure at Cinnamon Avenue, Coolum Beach. The temporary closure is in place to replace the stormwater culvert and will need to be extended to Thursday, March 24, 2022. OAKMONT COURT PARK SHADE

Council will soon deliver on a request to install shade sails at the playground at Oakmont Court Park, Peregian Springs. The shade will be installed in stages, beginning with the concrete footings for the poles. Followed by the poles and shade material several weeks later. Please follow any signage and traffic control for safety and thank-you for your patience during construction. I am pleased to be able to provide the requested shade and hope it makes using the park a much more pleasurable and sun safe experience for children and families who use the park. MORE PLAY AT THE BREEZE

Additional play equipment for our littlest park goers is currently being investigated for the Peregian Breeze park. To be able to co-locate the equipment with the existing play items may result in one of the surrounding garden beds being moved and the shade sails extended to cover the new equipment.

The big one for the region is the new planning scheme and Division 9 has a few local consultations, with the first one relating to a half-court basketball court in Coolum. Keep updated on council’s Have Your Say website at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au. ROADSHOWS ON HOLD

In light of the request from the State Government to stay at home and council’s request of staff to work from home where possible, I will be postponing community chats for February. STAY IN TOUCH

TAKE CARE OF YOUR LOWER BACK WHEN GARDENING

With all of the recent rain the garden is growing! Gardening can play havoc with your lower back, especially with prolonged bending or digging. Here are our team’s back pain prevention tips for gardeners!

Sign up for classes

Like to strengthen the core or improve your posture? Are you suffering with arthritic pains or osteoporosis? We have a variety of classes to help you get stronger in a safe, supervised and supportive environment! Ask us about our physio- led classes! Health fund rebates and bookings essential.

• Limit the amount of time spent in a bent position! Stand up every 5 mins, place your hands on your hips and reverse this posture with a gentle back bend. Take regular breaks and walk. Regular movement helps prevent pain. • Use correct bending and lifting technique - like a weight lifter! With your hips out and knees bent. Try a square or split stance position to lift, use your legs and switch your core on! • Use a kneeling or half kneeling position when weeding.

Peregian Springs News - February 2022

New team member

• Avoid the combined movement of lifting and twisting. Use your legs to lift then pivot to twist once you are in a standing upright position.

We welcome our newest team member Felicity McNally to the Synergy Physio team! Felicity brings a wealth of knowledge to Synergy and she looks forward to meeting you! As a special introductory offer and for a short time only, Felicity will be offering bulk billing on medicare referrals for follow up appointments! FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

LIVE MUSIC IN THE SPOTLIGHT I trust you and your family have enjoyed a safe start to 2022. LIVE-MUSIC FUNDING:

I was delighted to kick-start the year with the announcement of a $560,000 Federal Government grant for the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra. Managed out of Peregian Springs, this massive funding boost will enable the orchestra’s unique brand of classical music to return to stages across Australia and will also significantly expand their education capacity. INFRASTRUCTURE:

As many of you would know, delivery of infrastructure remains has always been my top priority and I’m proud of the fact the Sunshine Coast is the recipient of more Federal funding than ever - including hundreds of millions of dollars to deliver on road and rail upgrades. Towards the end of 2021, I also announced $8.78M for a regional food and beverage hub to be located at the Sunshine Coast Airport. However, there is no room to be complacent. That’s why I recently invited Minister Paul Fletcher MP to the Sunshine Coast to demonstrate the importance of a number of critical infrastructure projects first-hand. Paul is the Federal Minister responsible for infrastructure for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

OLYMPICS UPDATE:

I was honoured to be nominated recently for a position on the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (BOCOG), by Prime Minister Scott Morrison. SUNSHINE COAST AUSTRALIA DAY RECIPIENTS:

I also want to acknowledge the several outstanding Sunshine Coast residents who were officially recognised for their contributions to our nation through the 2022 Australia Day awards. Congratulations Kaylee McKeown, Debra Knight OAM, Robert Reid AM, Peter Ellis OAM, Margaret Thorsborne OAM, Susan Davis OAM, James McClelland OAM, Benjamin Hance OAM and of course Caroline Hutchinson OAM. As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any Federal issues., concerns or inquiries on 5479 2800; via email at ted.obrien.mp@ aph.gov.au or in person at 17 Southern Drive, Maroochydore.
