RATES TO RISE BY ABOUT $65 From page 1 Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said a decade of prudent fiscal had provided the foundations for a budget focused squarely on delivering a stronger, better and sustainable region.

“Despite the challenges our region has faced over the last few years, our council is forecast to achieve a strong $31.8 million operating result this year,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“This enables us to re-double our efforts to provide the services our community requires as well as continue to invest in the infrastructure and facilities that enhance the liveability and prosperity of one of the fastest growing regions in the country.”

Rates will rise off the back of increased land valuations, however Mayor Jamieson said Council had worked to limit the impact.

“While council is required, by law, to use

the State Government’s valuation figures to calculate the general rate, we have made adjustments to our rating categories to mitigate the full impact of the valuation increase,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“We know that the State Government valuation increases have ranged from 9.5 to 80.7 per cent, however with what council has done in this budget, the rate increase will generally not be anywhere near those percentages.

“The majority of the principal place of residence properties – around 60 per cent of all residential properties – will see a 5 per cent or $63.50 increase in their general rate.

“When taking into account the general waste and recycling bin collection services and the environment, transport and heritage levies, the bottom-line increase for the majority of principal place of residence properties

STUNNING FASHION FOR A CAUSE RESIDENTS OF AVEO PEREGIAN SPRINGS COUNTRY CLUB HAVE DUG DEEP TO RAISE MONEY FOR YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH ON THE SUNSHINE COAST.

The residents got together and organised a Gala Fashion Parade and Grand Raffle in June, raising $5,410 for Youturn Youth Support, a local not-for-profit group which last year supported more than 9,000 vulnerable young Australians and their families – many who were struggling with mental health concerns.

With young people at the heart of everything Youturn does, their youth support services fall within three core focus areas of child safety, homelessness, and mental health.

The devastating effects of isolation from the pandemic have meant that services are in dire need of funding to continue their important

work and every cent counts.

Youturn Engagement and Donor Relations Manager Susan Beaton said the group's mental health programs, delivered through five headspace centres (including Maroochydore), were running at capacity with waitlists stretching from weeks to months.

“We know this is not acceptable which is why fundraising is so important," Susan said.

"Events such as this highlights one of the biggest protective factors for young people that are doing it tough in having a caring community, who will listen, understand, show compassion and help those who are struggling to seek the support they need.”

NO EXCUSE FOR POOR DRIVING WITH SCHOOL HOLIDAYS UNDERWAY THE QUEENSLAND POLICE SERVICE HAS PUT MOTORISTS ON NOTICE THAT JULY IS NOT THE MONTH TO MISBEHAVE.

Minister for Police and Corrective Services Mark Ryan and Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus used a press conference at the start of the holidays to challenge Queensland motorists to be the safest road users.

These school holidays, police are using Operation Cold Snap to remind all road users that a safer drive is in their hands.

Assistant Commissioner Marcus said challenging road users to create a safer environment for all Queenslanders and visitors was about calling out excuses and starting conversations amongst drivers.

“It is pretty common for us to hear excuses when it comes to the roads,” Assistant Commissioner Marcus said.

“From ‘I was only just over the speed limit’, to ‘I was only going around the corner’, we know these are common points of discussion among friends and family.

“Next time you hear someone make an excuse for poor or unsafe driving behaviour; we challenge you to challenge them.

“Are potholes really an excuse for crashes on our roads, or are they a reason to slow down and drive to the conditions?

“Is being in a rush an excuse to speed or

drive distracted, or is about a changing your mind frame and giving your full attention to the roads at all times?

WE’RE OFFICIALLY A BIOSPHERE IN JUNE, THE SUNSHINE COAST OFFICIALLY JOINED 738 OTHER AREAS ACROSS THE WORLD TO HAVE BEEN GRANTED BIOSPHERE RESERVE STATUS BY THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANISATION (UNESCO).

The reserves are described by UNESCO as areas that promote “solutions reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use. They are learning areas for sustainable development under diverse ecological, social and economic contexts, touching the lives of more than 250 million people”.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said recognition was a truly historic moment for the Sunshine Coast.

“I am very proud to live and work in a region that has now become a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, as we continue to celebrate people and nature,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“After years in the making, this prestigious designation will help us protect and enhance our region, communities, economy and our natural environment for future generations.

“Becoming a biosphere supports council and the community’s clear plan and vision for the future of the Sunshine Coast.

“Committing to being a biosphere ensures people on the Sunshine Coast can be confident their council and their broader

community respect the environment and understand their place living within it.

“A biosphere designation shows the world we are a community that wants to live in harmony with our environment, recognises the need for responsible development to cater for the people choosing to live on the Sunshine Coast while also recognising the importance of preserving our natural environment.”

MAKING USE OF POLYSTYRENE TAKING POLYSTYRENE WASTE AND CONVERTING IT FOR FUTURE USE IS ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR THE TEAM AT RESOURCE RECOVERY AUSTRALIA (RRA).

With the addition of a processing machine to the rubbish tip precinct at 561 Eumundi Road, Doonan, RRA is now able to take expanded polystyrene, often used to package things like televisions, and convert it into a raw material used to make toys, park benches and even insulation.

RRA Noosa Manager Mitchell McIntyre said the process was just one example of taking waste and finding a new use for it, rather than simply discarding it into landfill.

“Choosing to purchase second-hand goods has a great impact on the environment because manufacturing is the most energy and resource-intensive part of the product lifecycle,” Mr McIntyre said.

“We’ve been working with Noosa Shire Council since 2018 with the Reviva Noosa reuse shop and mattress recycling, and now, we have expanded to provide polystyrene processing,” he said.

“Each of the services we provide to the Noosa community diverts waste from landfill and creates local, green jobs in what we call #Waste2Wages.

LIBRARY ROLLS INTO FRIDAYS COUNCIL’S MOBILE LIBRARY HAS CHANGED ITS VISITING TIMES TO PEREGIAN SPRINGS AND WILL NOW BE AT THE SHOPPING CENTRE CAR PARK FROM 8.30AM TO 11.30AM ON FRIDAYS.

The new schedule, introduced at the start of June, reflects changes in the borrowing habits and demand for the mobile service across the Sunshine Coast region.

Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the new timetable would provide a more flexible, targeted service that met community demand for Library services.

“The new timetable ensures more equitable access to library services across the region,” Cr Law said.

For customers unable to access alternative libraries, there are also other ways to access library services.

Library staff are happy to discuss alternative options with customers affected by these changes.

These may include the Home Library service which is available for borrowers who are unable to visit their local library due to illness,

disability or limited mobility and have no one who can visit the library on their behalf.

Borrowers are connected with a volunteer who chooses, delivers and returns books and other library items based on the borrower’s preferences.

Borrowers can also use the Council Link Service (search Council Link at www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) which is a transport service available for people aged 60 and over, people with a disability or mobility impairment (DSP concession card holders), carers and minors accompanying eligible people (carer’s card or companion card holders).

The Australian Bureau of Statistic’s latest business survey results have show that businesses of all sizes are struggling to find employees.

Tom Joseph, head of Industry Statistics at the ABS, said large and medium-sized businesses (66 per cent and 62 per cent) were more likely than small businesses (29 per cent) to have difficulties finding suitable staff.

Mr Joseph said however, nearly half (46 12

per cent) of small businesses affected were impacted to a great extent.

“Businesses reported having difficulty finding suitable building trade workers, clerical workers, labourers, sales staff and hospitality workers. Other in demand jobs included engineering trades and ICT professionals.”

When considering the month ahead, 44 per cent of businesses expect operating expenses to increase. The proportion of businesses expecting an increase is the highest recorded since the question was first asked in July 2020. peregianspringsnews.com.au

SOUNDS OF SUNSHINE TO ROCK LOVERS OF LIVE MUSIC SHOULD ADD A TRIP TO EUMUNDI TO THE DIARY FOR JULY 29 AND 30 FOR THE SUNSHINE SOUNDS FESTIVAL 2022.

The all-ages, family-friendly music festival features a line-up including Katie and Tyrone Noonan of george who will perform on the 20th anniversary of their number 1 double platinum album Polyserena.

Others to watch for include Clare Bowditch and band, Asha Jefferies, Hatz Fitz and Cara, Deline Briscoe, Band of Frequencies and Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers.

The festival is being presented by Katie Noonan’s production company, Kin Music.

“Sunshine Sounds is a truly special little festival that really brings people together,” Katie said.

“There’s a real sense of communityconnection, welcoming music lovers, and indeed performers, of all ages and stages.”

Katie says a key element of the 2022 festival is the inclusion of Eumundi School of Rock.

“Eumundi School of Rock is a super-special free education and mentorship program for young musos from 8 to 17 years.”

“The Friday program sees four Eumundi 14

School of Rock bands play live on the big stage, performing alongside none other than rock god himself Tim Rogers, frontman for You Am I”, she said.

“Three of our brilliant past students – Lochie Kapper on guitar, Niamh Stevens on bass and Dexter Hurren on drums – will be backing Tim himself, and to close the concert, all the 2022 rockers will rock out in an epic 26-piece band with Tim!” “The Saturday program includes our Sunshine Sounds Community Choir, where festival-goers get to join in what promises to be a goosebumps-inducing group sing-song for all ages and abilities,” Katie said.

“And the choir song for this year is ‘The Dead Heart’ by Midnight Oil!” Pre-festival choir rehearsals will be held in the Eumundi CWA Hall on July 10, 17 and 24 for those keen to get involved.

Gates open from 4.30pm to 10pm on Friday and 11am to 10pm on Saturday.

COSTA SIGNS ON FOR THE QUEENSLAND GARDEN EXPO GARDENING SUPER STAR COSTA GEORGIADIS HAS JOINED THE LINE-UP FOR THE QUEENSLAND GARDEN EXPO TO BE HELD FROM JULY 8 TO 10 AT NAMBOUR SHOWGROUNDS.

The annual event, hailed as one of the biggest festivals of its kind, is a celebration of all things gardening.

“I can’t wait to get back to the beautiful Sunshine Coast to attend one of my handsdown favourite events on the annual calendar,” Mr Georgiadis said.

“I’ll be chatting about a range of things this year, including what’s been happening in the gardening world since we last Expo’d together – and I can tell you, there have been a lot more people getting into their gardens in recent years!

The Annual General Meeting of the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club and Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Supporters Club was held on Saturday, June 6, 2022 for the election of board members.

The new team, pictured above, will be led by Club President, John Roderick and Supporters Club Chair, Marinus Jansen.

“It has only been possible for the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club to be reestablished from the generous support the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club has undertaken over several years including but not limited to the responsibilities of the patrol service agreement for lifesaving at Peregian Beach.

“Sincere thanks to President Ross Fisher and his management committee and all their staff for everyone’s contribution here for the benefit of lifesaving.”

Under the stewardship of the Branch President Gerard O’ Brien, there has been a working group preparing for the transition to Peregian Beach SLSC being ready for season 2022/23.

This has been a lengthy and complex 22

governance process to start a new club, in essence with Office of Fair Trading, incorporation, ATO compliance for new ABN and application for ACNC not for profit status and negotiating a permit to occupy the building with Noosa Council.

“We have now been further encouraged with the progress of the aforementioned items with Noosa Council agreeing to a 10-year lease of the building, giving confidence in the proposed new club and confidence for the volunteers in the future of lifesaving at Peregian Beach.”

“Our goals for the upcoming season are to continue the successful junior program of previous years and increase patrolling membership and awards to have a high standard of patrolling at our beach.

“The importance of strong financial management in the formative year of the new club is at the forefront of our board’s planning”.

BUSINESS FEATURE WITH GORDON MACVICAR OF MORTGAGE CHOICE

INTEREST RATE CHALLENGES 1. What advice would you give to those worried about interest rate rises?

Unfortunately, the fact is interest rates are going up there yet there is uncertainty amongst experts around when rates will actually peak.

As uncomfortable as rising interest rates make us all feel, now is the time to get prepared and work out what rate increases of another 2-3% will mean to your household. Know your numbers and have a plan.

If I can offer any peace-of-mind, for the majority of us who have taken out a home loan in the last 5 years, when we took out that home loan we were assessed by the banks that we could afford to repay that loan with rates 2%-3% above the market rate at the time. We have been assessed that we can handle an extra 2-3% rate increase, although increased costs of living are playing a part in diluting this buffer.

There are still some great variable rates on offer in the market and switching lenders to secure a much lower variable rate can assist greatly with weathering future rate rises. Everyone's situation is different, talk to an expert about strategies that can be tailored to you.

2. What categories of loans are going to be affected in different ways?

a) For those currently in a fixed rate nothing changes until the fixed rate period ends. Once the fixed rate ends borrowers need to be prepared for higher repayments as the loan will revert to the current variable rates. Households who fixed in the last couple of years need to be prepared for the fixed rate to revert to a variable rate 2%-3%+ higher.

If your fixed home loan allows additional repayments it's a good idea to start making extra repayments to try to get used to the higher repayments now. If your loan doesn't allow for extra repayments, try transferring the extra funds into a separate bank account. This allows you to try to get used to paying more now and will also build up a cash buffer in additional repayments.

fixed rate is due to end so there is plenty of time to put the appropriate steps in place. b) Households with a variable rate home loan have the option to ride the variable rate increases with their bank, look at fixing, or switch to a lower variable rate. The majority of our clients in the last 3 months have chosen the variable rate option. Our advice to our clients about fixed vs variable is a fixed rate loan should be taken if certainty of repayments is important to you, since you won't have to worry about your home loan repayments changing during the term of the fixed rate loan.

3. What other strategies could people employ?

The strategies we are recommending are: 1. Stress test your household Budget and plan for interest rates at 2-3% higher.

2. If you can, start paying more into your home loan now, try to get used to the increased repayments as if rates were 2-3% higher.

3. Have an expert review your home loan, in the past few weeks we have been able to save clients on average 0.79% by refinancing.

4. Look at fixed rates if certainty of repayments over the next 1-3 years is important to you.

5. Consolidate credit cards and car/personal loans into your home loan. While it's not ideal stretching a car loan or credit card into a home loan term, it might be what is required to free up cash flow to service the home loan.

6. Consider switching to a Basic Home Loan.

Quite often households are paying a $400 annual package fee which might not be essential for their situation.

Most importantly talk to an expert as these tips are general and not to be taken as advice, a full review of your situation is important before recommending the best strategy for you.

WATER BILLS SET TO RISE FROM JULY 1 Water bills from Unitywater for the average Sunshine Coast household (using 375 litres a day) are set to rise by $7.42 a quarter, including a State Government Bulk Water increase of $2.40, in 2022-2023.

Acting CEO Pauline Thomson said the increase would cover upgrades to essential water and sewerage infrastructure.

“We’ve worked hard to keep the increase as low as possible and at an annual increase of 2 per cent, it’s less than CPI. “Our usage charges have remained the 28

same since 2014-15.”

Ms Thomson said Unitywater’s Customer Care Program was always available.

“We know it’s been a tough couple of years and if any of our customers are struggling to pay their bill, we encourage them to contact us as soon as possible so that we can help them – we have payment plans and other support available.”

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

DISAPPOINTING ROADS RESULT A BUDGET OF BROKEN PROMISES

During Budget Week, I tabled the community’s petition signed by thousands of locals that called on the State Government to fast-track funding and start construction on the long overdue safety and congestion busting upgrades to our local road network.

For those not familiar with it, the joint campaign with Coolum State School P&C and Coolum Business and Tourism, demanded funds to be allocated in the Budget to start work on the duplication of the Motorway and upgrade the interchange with Yandina Coolum Road and the roundabout at Coolum State School.

I’ve been lobbying for these works since I was first elected, and finally, at the last election the State Government committed funds to start the planning for these works.

This is despite the Beattie-Bligh government first announcing the project back in 2008!

Since then however, our population has grown exponentially, and too many lives have been lost on our roads.

The statistics are frightening – since 2008, 25 lives have been lost on the Motorway alone.

It was bitterly disappointing that the State Government failed to listen to the concerns of thousands of locals, with no additional funds announced in the Budget.

Overall, it was a budget of broken promises, which delivered more debt and more taxes, but not the crucial road infrastructure or cost of living relief that we were hoping for.

The one positive highlight for Coolum was the allocation of $9 million for Coolum State High, for new classrooms, part of a $16 million spend announced last year.

Great news for Bli Bli residents, who are set to benefit from the extension of the popular 612 bus route, as well as additional school bus services for Good Samaritan College.

The extended 612 service will commence on 11 July, and the school services, which includes a new route from Eumundi, commences at the start of the new school term.
