GOLF COURSE PREPARES FOR NEW CHAPTER

HANDOVER FROM GSM TO CHATERAISE SET FOR OCTOBER 23

Peregian Golf Course bids farewell to its custodian management team after an incredible seven-year journey.

GSM Peregian Golf, the custodians of this cherished venue, will be handing over the reins to Chateraise (Lakelands Golf Club).

The recent acquisition by Chateraise marks a new chapter for the golf course, as they take over full operations starting from October 15th, 2023.

Back in 2016, the Peregian Springs Golf Club faced daunting challenges, leading to its closure and liquidation

With the transition to Chateraise, GSM remain confident that the golf course will continue to flourish and thrive as a golf course for years to come.

GSM have extended their heartfelt gratitude to loyal Patrons, Pass Holders, Ambassadors, Corporate Partners, staff and the entire Peregian Springs Community for their unwavering support, in aiding the success of the golf course. Making reference to that fact that

WANT TO HELP?

2 FIT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 1.5 HOURS A MONTH

Rotary Noosa Daybreak Club has been holding it's very successful annual Bookfest Sale on the May long weekend for around 15 years.

during mid year, books are all progressively collected, sorted, and stored in boxes in the Clubs shed at Noosa Springs.

The average weight of each box varies between 15kg & 20Kg, and over the 15 years, moving these boxes has become a difficulty for Club members.

The Club holds a Book Sort at it's shed on the third Saturday of each month from 8:30am through to 10am during which time around 30 to 40 boxes are moved from the sorting area to pallets.

Two fit volunteers for this 1.5 hours would

greatly help RNDB, and assist to provide a community service which ultimately helps homeless people in the Noosa Coolum region. If you would like to help with some heavy lifting, please call Bruce on 0401 809 179

MAKING TRACKS TOGETHER

RECOVERY PLAN FOR OUR BELOVED TURTLES

every nest and egg for the survival and recovery of these turtles, as only one in 1000 hatchlings reaches adulthood.

Collaboration among Sunshine Coast Council, councillors, Kabi Kabi First Nation Peoples, Queensland Government, independent Technical Advisory Panel and community leaders of TurtleCare, Coolum and North Shore & Bribie Island Turtle Trackers, has shaped the draft plan.

It supports efforts by the Queensland and Australian governments' efforts to stop the decline of marine turtle populations and guides the council's decision-making efforts for conservation and management goals for nesting marine turtles and hatchlings within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area.

The plan sets out 3 desired outcomes and supportive themes:

A new plan aims to save one of the Sunshine Coast's most beloved marine animals by supporting the recovery of self-sustaining populations of marine turtles.

The goal is to reduce threats, improve habitat quality, and strengthen communitybased management to ensure the nesting and hatchling success of critically endangered loggerhead and vulnerable green turtle populations.

The Sunshine Coast Council is seeking input from the community on the draft Sunshine Coast Marine Turtle Conservation Plan.

The plan envisions a future where marine turtles thrive on the Sunshine Coast in harmony with people.

The populations of loggerhead turtles nesting along the Queensland coastline, including Sunshine Coast beaches, have significantly declined, making them critically endangered.

Sustained population growth for three generations is needed to remove marine turtles from the threatened species list. The plan emphasizes the importance of

1. Strategic planning and policy guidance for turtle-sensitive lighting and coastal development.

2. Regional marine turtle recovery actions.

3. Sunshine Coast community based TurtleCare program delivery.

The community can provide feedback on the draft plan by visiting Council’s Have Your Say website at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au before June 16, 2022.

A SHEET ® FOR THE PLANET.

RECYCLED TEXTILE FOR A GREENER ENVIRONMENT.

Embrace the opportunity to give your old sheets a new lease on life as Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council team up with BlockTexx and St Vincent de Paul Society for a community textile recycling event, 'Give a Sheet® for the Planet.'

In celebration of World Environment Day, on June 11, you can declutter your linen cupboards and drop off approved items at Chancellor State College, Secondary Campus in Sippy Downs or Tewantin State School.

Your donated linen will undergo a transformation by BlockTexx, converting it into valuable, high-grade recycled materials. These materials will then be used by Australian manufacturers to create innovative products such as hydro-mulch, geosynthetic fabrics, and building materials.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Holder Cr Maria Suarez said the event was a great way to clean out the closet and recycle for the environment.

“Just one truck load of linen collected will have diverted 10 tonnes of textile waste from landfill and will have removed carbon emissions equivalent to taking 60 cars off the road for a year."

“This event gives the community a convenient way to do their part in creating a cleaner, greener environment and sustainable

future, all while winning back some space in their cupboards.”

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said Noosa Council was proud to spearhead the inaugural Give a Sheet® textile collection initiative with BlockTexx in 2022.

“The community rallied around the cause with over 200 donations dropped off, helping to divert 3.2 tonnes of textile waste from landfill."

“This initiative is not only a win for the environment but is also creating new resources for other sectors and helping

Adrian Ku-ring-gai

Councils deliver on their commitments to the circular economy in a measurable, tangible way.”

Co-founder of BlockTexx Adrian Jones said the community feedback was always extremely positive.

“Everyone seems to have a ‘thank goodness you’re here’ moment when they realise that our onshore recycling option is a better alternative than landfill or export,” Mr Jones said.

“This state-of-the-art textile recovery facility developed in Australia will break down textiles into new recycled materials of rPET pellets and Cellulose clay to be used by Australian manufacturers – they won’t be going into landfill, burnt, or exported overseas. “Being able to access a commercialscale circular economy solution for textile waste, diverting it from kerbside bins and landfill, right here on the Sunshine Coast, is

remarkable.”

Be a part of the solution between 10 am and 2 pm on the 11th June 2023. Drop off your textiles at Chancellor State College - Secondary Campus, Sippy Downs or Tewantin State School, 10 Werin Street, Tewantin.

Households can drop off their clean and sorted old, worn-out sheets, towels, pillowcases, quilt covers and linen that are no longer wanted or can no longer be used.

More information on the ‘Give a Sheet® for the planet’ event is available at Sunshine Coast Events.

TRASH TO TREASURE

THE TOOL SAVING MONEY AND THE PLANET

This matchmaking tool with a difference is turning trash into treasure.

And it is enjoying great success on the Sunshine Coast, helping the region surge towards its goal of being the most sustainable in the nation.

From timber and metal to stationery; and crafts and organics to soils, a range of material otherwise destined for landfill is being traded – and given new purpose - using the online marketplace-style ASPIRE platform.

This connects likeminded local businesses and organisations who can negotiate exchanges that save money – and the planet!

Sunshine Coast Council was one of the first councils in Queensland to invest in ASPIRE.

Now the initiative has reached a major milestone here, attracting 300 members and diverting more than 3200 tonnes of wastebound material and products – that’s around 29,000 fridges.

Thanks to the platform, the region has this financial year saved $475,000 in disposal costs, and 1000 tonnes of carbon emissions have been saved through exchanges.

The members include family-run businesses, large manufacturers, community and sporting groups, schools and childcare centres.

It is accessible for all organisations with an ABN and is free if you have fewer than 100 full time staff.

the state. Under current laws, young repeat violent offenders are able to walk away from their crimes with little more than a slap on the wrist. There’s no punishment, no consequences for actions, and innocent Queenslanders like the Beaumont family are paying the ultimate price.

Queenslanders deserve strong laws that put the rights of victims ahead of offenders, and it’s about time the Government started listening.

PARLIAMENT

The youth crime crisis has once again come under the spotlight in Parliament, with more tragic stories of innocent lives being lost at the hands of repeat young offenders. During the last sitting week, a petition signed by more than 7000 Queenslanders was tabled, which called for urgent reforms to the state’s revolving door youth justice system.

I was proud to sponsor the petition, which was launched by the Beaumont family last year, following the death of 15-year-old Angus Beaumont who was killed in 2020 during an altercation with 2 young recidivist offenders, one of whom was out on bail.

In 2015 the Attorney General Yvette D’Ath started watering down the youth justice laws which has resulted in the youth crime crisis impacting communities right across

COASTAL CONSERVATION ACCESS

LAKE WEYBA CARPARK UPGRADE

The northern carpark at Lake Weyba is being upgraded with a concrete seal. This upgrade will make the carpark durable and usable even after the rain. It will also prevent sediment from seeping into the pristine waters of Lake Weyba. Plans are also underway to upgrade the surrounding trail with a number of creek crossings.

NEW PATHWAY FOR DOONAN CREEK RESERVE

Doonan Creek Environment Reserve is an important coastal habitat area with vegetation that ranges from iconic coastal heath, scribbly gum forest to melaleuca wetlands.

It’s home to more than 125 different bird and 24 different mammal species and vulnerable wallum frogs.

Our community has helped council restore the reserve for many years at various tree planting events, and in the last three years alone, has planted more than 11,700 native trees, shrubs and ground covers.

It’s great news that a new pathway will be constructed to make access to the site more accessible for people of all abilities.

ROAD UPGRADE

The trip along North Arm Yandina Creek Road will soon be a lot less dusty with an upgrade from unsealed to a sealed road. The first stage of this upgrade will occur over the next few months. There won’t be a full road closure during the works, however there will be some delays. Council thanks you in advance for your patience.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Both the Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Strategy and Community Strategy are open for comment to ensure they remain future focused and respond to the emerging issues facing the region. The Draft Macropod

You can recycle your old sheets and give them a new chance at life - simply clean out your linen cupboards and drop-off approved items at Chancellor State College, Secondary Campus, Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs or Tewantin State School, 10 Werin Street, Tewantin, on June 11 between 10am and 2pm. PHARMACIES UNDER THREAT

CYBER SECURITY HIGHLIGHTED AT THE FAIRFAX SENIORS FORUM

Thank you to Living Choice at Twin Waters for hosting my 2023 Seniors Forum, where we discussed cyber security and keeping safe online.

Online safety continues to be a priority issue for many seniors and it was great to hear from the experts - NBN Australia, IDCARE and CAPA Services.

Preventing scammers from reaching our information was the number one message, and below are the top three points taken from the presentations on the day:

1. Stop and think. If you receive unsolicited contact from someone (phone call or email), pause and cease contact to verify what they are saying. Contact the organisation directly using publicly available contact points;

2. Never allow anyone remote access to your computer unless YOU have initiated it; and

3. Consider using a password manager and multi-factor authorisation apps for added layers of security.

If you or a loved one thinks they may have been scammed, contact iDCare on 1800 595 160 or www.idcare.org.

COMMUNITY PHARMACIES

A number of community pharmacies on the Sunshine Coast are under threat due to Labor's new policy on dispensing medicines. My Coalition colleagues and I have called for the government to guarantee that its new policy will NOT:

• harm the viability of community pharmacies;

• adversely affect medicine supplies; and

• increase medicine stockpiling and wastage.

If you’re visiting a community pharmacy,

please be conscious of the pressure they’re under. Some pharmacists are worried about being able to keep their doors open and their staff in jobs as a result of this new Labor government policy.

SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the backbone of our community and they deserve our thanks and support.

Sociologists like Hugh Mackay point to the Sunshine Coast as a region that has the highest levels of ‘social capital’, evidenced, in part, by the number of residents who volunteer their time to help others.

We should be justifiably proud of this commitment to our local community and that’s why I was delighted to secure funding of $66,000 to support local volunteers under the latest round of Volunteer Grants.

The funding will be shared between 34 community groups in Fairfax, including:

$3,745 to Coolum Beach Meals on Wheels;

• $1,500 to OzHarvest; and

• $3,655 to Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled.

A full list of successful groups can be found on my website at www.tedobrien.com.au.

CONSISTENCY AND CONFIDENCE

MY TOP 3 TIPS TO MASTER CONSISTENCY IN GOLF

The number one recommendation I have for you to be a consistent golfer is establishing a pre shot routine that looks and behaves the same every time. This approach ensures you prepare you body and mind for each swing in a consistent manner. Specifically focusing on alignment, grip and posture in every swing. By following the same set of actions before every swing, you create the two “C’s”; consistency and confidence.

The second most important factor is developing a repeatable swing. By focusing on fundamental principles and ingraining muscle memory through repetition you can develop a consistent swing that produces the shots you desire more often than not. I highly recommend you seek professional

advice and get a clear understanding of what you should be practising or thinking about to hone that swing and get the results you want.

The third and final task to get the consistency of your dreams is mental resilience. Managing a positive mindset and emotions are key to playing the best 9 or 18 holes of your life. Commit to each swing with confidence, let go of mistakes and setbacks and most importantly stay in the present moment for the shot at hand.

Hope you enjoyed, happy golfing
