Trish Couper and friends provided some of the entertainment at the inaugural Sounds of Spring event held at The Avenue Park in Peregian Springs in October.

PARK ALIVE WITH MUSIC THE AVENUE PARK WAS ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC ON OCTOBER 17 AS LOCALS TURNED OUT IN DROVES TO EXPERIENCE THE INAUGURAL THE SOUNDS OF SPRING EVENT SPONSORED BY SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL, COOLUM BUSINESS AND TOURISM AND THE NATIONAL BUSHFIRE RECOVERY AGENCY.

Hundreds of people made their way to the park, affectionately known as The Duck Pond, to take advantage of food vans, live music, and great weather. Peregian Springs News - November 2021

The majority of the funding for the event came from the National Bushfire Recovery Agency which is charged with helping communities affected by bushfires to bounce back stronger than ever. The good news is, a second event has been planned for Sunday, November 21 from 2pm to 6pm, with music, food, face painting, drumming workshops and free jewellery and weaving workshops on the menu. FROM THE ED’S DESK

There’s no doubt about it, October has flown by. We’re now at the start of November which means about five weeks left before school starts breaking up for the children, and local parents start to juggle the six weeks of school holidays with their own one week of annual leave (if they’re lucky). We’ll be doing our best to share any workshops, events, or interesting holiday offerings with our readers in the December edition of the magazine. If you have any ideas to share we’d love to hear about them via our facebook page or on

the email address below. As a quick pointer to a fun afternoon on offer locally in November it would be worth putting November 21 from 2pm to 6pm in your diary for the second Sounds of Spring Event. Hats off to the organisers of the first event held in October which was the first time in nearly 10 years living here in Peregian Springs that I’ve seen The Avenue Park packed with people out for a fun day in the sun. It certainly proved that the park can host these events, although, like anything outdoors, weather will always play a part Here’s to a clear day in a few weeks’ time. Finally, as we count down towards the Christmas shutdowns a reminder to always shop local where you can - especially with the great advertisers here who help keep Peregian Springs News in your letterbox each month. NEW PRESIDENT TAKES OFFICE

Dan Purdie MP (Ninderry), Penny Casey (Secretary), Kane Livingstone (outgoing President), Leigh McCready (incoming President), Mike Goss (Treasurer) and Amelia Lorentson (Noosa Councillor) at the Peregian Family and Friends AGM.

LOCAL RESIDENTS GATHERED IN OCTOBER TO ELECT THE NEXT COMMITTEE FOR PEREGIAN FAMILY & FRIENDS GROUP.

Peregian Family and Friends held their Annual General Meeting at Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club, welcoming members from Sunshine Coast Regional and Noosa Shire Councils. Dan Purdie, MP for Ninderry and Councillor Amelia Lorentson from Noosa Shire Council were in attendance too. Newly-elected President Leigh McCready, who founded the original Peregian Beach organisation in 2017 prior to the merger with the Peregian Springs Residents Association, said: “We are a unique association in that we cross both shire and electorate borders and represent the whole of Peregian.” “The important thing is not the lines on a map, but where our community of interest is – we all shops at the same retailers and cafes, send our kids to the same schools and experience the same issues of congestion, parking, lack of public transport and infrastructure.” “For example, our most popular and important project, which has been the revival of the Peregian Surf Club, affects us all alike 6

“Peregian Beach is the closest beach for around 15,000 people across Peregian, and the nipper program educates children from across the whole area.” Ms McCready praised outgoing President Kane Livingstone for his three years of service and listed highlights including the revival of the Nippers program at Peregian Beach, fundraising in the wake of the 2019 bushfires and the group’s contribution to Noosa Council’s Coastal Hazard Adaptation Plan roundtable consultation. “This is in addition to the everyday business of being a residents’ association – representing the community regarding upcoming developments and projects, championing infrastructure which improves our lifestyles and organising community events,” Ms McCready said. “The committee would like to thank all members for their ongoing commitment to the Peregian community and for their contribution to making Peregian such a great place to live, work and play!” For further information about Peregian Family & Friends or to become a member, please visit www.peregianfriends.com or the Peregian Family & Friends Facebook page. peregianspringsnews.com.au

LAST STAGES SEE TREES FALL PAVILIONS RESIDENTS WERE CAUGHT OFF GUARD THIS MONTH AS DEVELOPERS MOVED IN TO START PREPARING THE LAND FOR THE FINAL STAGES OF THE THEIR ESTATE.

A flyer circulated to houses close to the 2.79ha block at the top of the hill to alert residents to expect construction noise and traffic was the first many had heard about development proceeding on the block which has been approved for 51 three-bedroom townhouses since 2009. Part of the area at the top of the hill was mapped as an Indigenous Heritage Site in 2016, but in February 2018, then developer Sunland and local indigenous owners came to an agreement on how it would be treated. “An agreement was signed (with Indigenous owners) in February 2018 and continues to be

in place, however the details of the agreement are confidential,” a Sunland spokesperson said at the time. The block was sold in May 2021 by Colliers International Sunshine Coast. Among it’s new owners is Cube Developments. Plans for the site include two and three storey townhomes and two small unit blocks designed to be built to the contours of the hill so it remains within Council height limits.

An extraordinary general meeting of the Ridges Principal Body Corporate has been called for November 1 as the next step in the process towards deciding whether to accept, or not, the proposal by Aveo to transfer ownership of the Ridges Recreational Facility to the Principal Body Corporate in exchange for 100 year leases on the cafe and office space on site. The meeting will vote on which legal providers to use to review the proposed deal, and also which businesses shall be engaged to report back to the PBC on the expected operational costs of owning and operating the Rec Centre, if that is how the PBC opts to go. The current 10-year facility agreement between Aveo and the Principal Body Corporate expires in February 2022 and it is not designed to simply roll over into a new one. Under the terms of the Aveo offer, the PBC has 60 days from September 10 to make a decision which is now due later this month.

NEW FASHION FOR COOL KIDS PEREGIAN BREEZE COUPLE LIZ AND DAN SUZUKI HAVE TAKEN THEIR LOVE OF JAPANESE CULTURE AND KIDS AND CREATED YUUGEN, A NEW BRAND OF STREETWEAR FOR 1-4 YEAR OLDS, THAT LAUNCHED ON OCTOBER 22.

For Liz, who also teaches Japanese at a local high school, the fashion line came after the birth of her own son Hugo and the struggle she had in finding clothes that were stylish, on trend and unisex in nature. She said as it was only natural that she took her love of Japanese culture and language and used that as the inspiration for her fashion. A key aim is to produce stylish patterns that aren’t bland, sparkly, or covered in tractors or slogans. Dan, who is also a Japanese teacher, works behind the scenes on the business as the duo

SURF LIFE SAVING WITH JOHN RODERICK

GIVE IT A GO Interested in being a volunteer, then why not try lifesaving at Peregian Beach? Surf Lifesavers are men and women who volunteer their time to provide supervision at our beach. All qualified surf lifesavers wear the internationally recognised red and yellow patrol uniform. The red and yellow cap is a safety symbol and is proudly worn by surf lifesavers so they can be easily identified by the public. When you go to the beach, no doubt you look for the red and yellow flags which our lifesavers place in the best area to swim at. Our lifesavers are allocated to a patrol team, which is coordinated by a patrol captain who is responsible for the coordination of actions in monitoring the beach and in times of rescues and first aid.

We have many different roles that a volunteer can enjoy. Not everyone needs to be a swimmer or board paddler. Lifesaving has other roles such as first aid and radio operations that members participate in. Do you have some spare time, looking to meet other members in the community? Whether you have lived here for many years, or a new resident lifesaving can be a great community organization to participate in. Whatever your skills are or your area of interest or the time you can give lifesaving at Peregian Beach welcomes you. Want to know more? Contact us at hello@ peregiansurfclub.com

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM SHOULDER PAIN? There can be a number of different reasons for shoulder pain. The most common is impingement, which is compression of either the small tendons or bursa leading to bursitis or tendon tears. This is often felt as an ache into the outside of the shoulder and into the upper arm with overhead activities, lying on your side or taking the hand behind the back. Causes can include repetitive strain (such as paddling, swimming or surfing), weak scapula muscles, postural problems or weakness in the rotator cuff muscles. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis, but also a thorough assessment of the underlying cause which can be different in everyone. Understanding the cause helps form a treatment pathway. The solution can include

understanding what to avoid, changing your workstation or swimming technique, and starting a specific strengthening program. Our tips for happy shoulders! • Care with weights such as shoulder press or tricep dips • Get strong in the shoulder blades – an essential support for shoulders • Care with stretches- some stretches can make this problem worse!

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

ARE YOU COPING WITH STRESS? THIS TIME OF YEAR IS ALWAYS FULL OF ACTIVITY. STUDENTS IN GRADE 12 ARE STARTING THEIR QCAA EXAMS, ALL OTHER YEAR LEVELS ARE FACING FINAL ASSESSMENTS AND FOR MANY OF US ADULTS, THIS IS THE BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR.

Stress (abnormal pressure) levels in schools and the community spike significantly in these months leading up to Christmas. Stress wreaks havoc on your emotional equilibrium and physical health so here are some tips that might help. Don’t over fill your cup! Last week I attended a seminar by psychologist, Dr Robi Sonderegger. He said, stress is like water being poured into a cup. The cup (you) has a certain amount of water it can hold. Once the limit is reached, water flows over creating a mess. When we are overloaded with stress our emotions and life can spiral out of control. If we are feeling stressed then we have to reflect on what we are putting into the cup and if it’s too much, consider how can we reduce the flow. Work slower to work faster! When we were under the pump, my old landscaping boss would say, “less haste, more speed”. He knew that working faster often caused mistakes and we were more effective when we slowed down. Take a break in your study or work. Pause for a few minutes to get

it right and guard against rushing. Slowing down might actually cause you to be more effective. Breathe! When stress levels are rising and emotions bubbling up, pause and take a deep breath in for 3 and out for 3. I say “relax” to myself, as I’m breathing. You will be surprised at how it helps to clear your mind and ground you. Sleep! Getting enough sleep is critical in keeping well, maintaining healthy brain functioning and being effective in daily activities. School students should sleep 9-12 hours and adults 7-9 hours a night. Research shows that good sleep plays a huge role in reducing stress and improving mood. Do something you enjoy! It is easy to get caught up in just working or ticking of the to do list. Allow time in the busy-ness to do something you enjoy, even if it is only for 30 minutes. Your productivity will increase and you will be in a better mind space. So good luck managing your stress levels over the coming months. * Mark Horsfall is a Chaplain at Coolum State High School

Regulated dog inspection program

A copy of the program is available on council’s website.

210216 10/21.

Council will be undertaking a regulated dog inspection program between 1 November 2021 and 31 October 2022. The purpose of the program is to conduct a compliance audit at premises within the region where dogs that have been regulated under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 are being kept. The Act requires local governments to manage regulated dogs within their boundaries. The program will work to ensure animal owners are adhering to the mandatory conditions for keeping a regulated dog to reduce the risk posed by these animals.

COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

TALKS START ON NEW FACILITY COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

I’m really pleased to let you know that community consultation for the Peregian Springs Community Facility will take place during November. This facility has been on a community wishlist for some time, and I’m excited that planning is moving forward. A community site is identified at 214 The Avenue, Peregian Springs. This engagement will explore the current and future needs of the community and what sort of building can contribute to supporting those needs. Will it support cultural or artistic needs? Will it be a place for health and community connection? A place for innovation and educational opportunities? A place for recreational or social opportunities? You can let council know your thoughts at pop-up stalls at Peregian Springs Shopping Centre, in online and face-to-face workshops or via the online survey. Please visit https://haveyoursay. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ for all the details and a link to the survey. Throughout the engagement, we’ll also explore whether there are any potential partnership opportunities for the future delivery of the facility and funding sources Please keep an eye on my Facebook page for more information on the Peregian Springs Community Facility consultation and the pop-up and workshop dates or check back regularly at the website above. STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

ROADS, GRANTS AND COVID

GAMBLING GRANT SUCCESS

Congratulations to our latest Gambling Community Benefit Fund recipients, including the Coolum Peregian Swimming Club ($30,009.50), Coolum Beach Meals on Wheels ($19,120), Coolum Hearts ($15,000), and Coolum Touch ($35,000). Big changes are coming to the grants program from next year, with the grants being offered in four rounds. Three of these rounds will offer funding up to $35,000, and one super round offering up to $100,000. The super round closes at the end of February, and is expected to open in midJanuary, so keep an eye out for more details. ROADWORKS UPDATE

Resurfacing works are due to start on a section of Emu Mountain Road. The resurfacing, which will involve minor earthworks, pavement repairs, asphalt overlay works and linemarking will be done on approximately 7kms of the road between the Peregian Springs Drive (south) and Murdering Creek Road roundabouts. The roundabouts themselves will not be included, as they already have a surface layer of asphalt. To minimize inconvenience to motorists, the works will be carried out at night, from Sunday to Thursday, between 6pm and 5am, and are expected to take approximately 4 weeks to complete. 22

Thank you in advance for your patience during these works, and don’t forget to drive to the conditions. Works were also recently completed on the installation of a new closed-circuit tv camera and modifications to the traffic signals on Yandina Coolum Road, at the intersection of Yungar Street and Central Avenue. This was part of the jointly funded Road Safety Program, which saw the CCTV systems installed at a number of locations around the coast. COVID ROADMAP

For months now, Queenslanders have been crying out for roadmap out of COVID lockdowns and restrictions. I think it’s fair to say we’ve become more sick of the politics than from COVID itself, so it’s great to see a plan for the path forward. Unfortunately, the crippling effect of mixed messaging and ad hoc lockdowns on small and family businesses, particularly in the tourism industry, has taken a massive toll Statistics from Tourism Research Australia reveal the cost to the Queensland tourism industry is almost $20 billion. The same research also found that around 10,000 Queensland tourism businesses won’t survive. I applaud our local chamber, Coolum Business and Tourism, who has been doing the heavy lifting, launching local activation programs to support local businesses. Without their help, many may not survived. As we all continue to play our part and get vaccinated, in the lead up to Christmas I urge you to show your support and shop locally, and help keep our local businesses open. STAY IN TOUCH

GOLF

GOLF TIP - WITH PEREGIAN GOLF PRO KATELYN MUST HOW TO SHOOT A LOWER SCORE WITH ONLY 1 HOUR OF PRACTISE A WEEK:

The majority of you don’t have a spare 20 hours a week to invest in all areas of your golf game. What if you had only 1 hour per week to become great? Would you focus on something that you enjoy practising and is already a strength or would you focus on that one thing that could lower your score? I challenge you to put pen to paper and write down your answer to these two questions, and focus on them for the next month.

1. What area of your game is your strength and what Is the weakest part of your game? i.e hitting it straight, drivers off the tee etc 2. If you had 1 hour per week to invest in your golf game, how would you spend it? Happy golfing, Katelyn

When the time comes, we will be there for you. Personalised and caring service, appointments from your home and returning to your home.

At IFYS we hope of a world where every child lives a life that is free of hurt and trauma and they grow up in a caring and nurturing family knowing they are loved. WHAT’S ON WITH JULIA LOANEY

STEP OUT WITH LADIES IN BLACK IN LATE NOVEMBER, EARLY DECEMBER THE COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE WILL TAKE ON THE LOOK AND FEEL OF AN OLD SCHOOL DEPARTMENT STORE FOR THE LATEST SHOW BY COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS.

Set in the 1950s, Ladies in Black follows Lisa (newcomer to CTP Sienna McRitchie) over the summer holidays as she begins work at F.G Goode’s, a fashionable department store in Sydney, following her final year of school. This musical is not only a coming of age story for a teenager in 1950s Australia, it follows the lives of other women in the Ladies wear department of this major department store. Australia opened up to European refugees and immigration after the Second World War and Aussies, quite frankly, didn’t like it. But the immigrants brought with them new tastes, music and a whole new way of enjoying life. Magda (Oriana Packman) is a highly educated and cultured Hungarian refugee who buys and sells the haute couture in Goode’s. Each gown in “Model Gowns” has a name and a price tag to match. Magda sees something in our young heroine and nurtures her intelligence and inspires a fighting spirit to stand up to her father and to follow her dreams of going to university instead of becoming a simple secretary until she finds a proper husband. This is a wonderful musical by Carolyn Burns with music by Tim Finn, directed by Linda Gefken (We Will Rock You, Spamalot, The Addams Family and Sweet Charity, to name a few). Linda was a real fan of Split Enz in the early days, Tim Finn in particular, and is thrilled that he has expanded his talents to include writing the music for this delightful musical. Fans will recognise some elements of early Split Enz music, as well as plenty of 1950s styles. Peregian Springs News - November 2021

The music is lyrical and melodic and audiences will be singing the tunes from the show for days afterward. Costuming for this production is a real challenge, and now that we have the fabulous Michelle Peloe on board as costumier, our dresses and suits are a real treat: some vintage pieces and some magnificent recreations. SHOW DETAILS: Where: Coolum Civic Centre, Park St, Coolum Beach When: Nov 26th & 27th @ 7.30pm, 28th @ 2pm and Dec 3rd & 4th @ 7.30pm, 5th @ 2pm Cost: Members: $22; Adults: $28; Conc: $25 Tickets: www.coolumtheatre.com.au or North Shore Realty on 5446 2500; Tables seat 8 / BYO Nibbles & Drinks 29
