OLD PHONES SAVE LIVES WHEN IT COMES TO HELPING PEOPLE ESCAPE FROM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CHARITY GROUP DV SAFE PHONE KNOW THAT A SAFE PHONE CAN BE A LIFE SAVER.

CEO Ashton Wood said the group was created in 2020 after he spoke to a senior police officer who told him the biggest thing they needed was mobile phones - as when things went bad, phones were often the first thing to be taken. For victims, having an emergency phone they could use to get help, could Peregian Springs News - September 2021

make all the difference. Since launching the concept the group have delivered more than 1000 phones and raised nearly $50,000 to help DV victims. Cr Suarez has provided funding for 25 phone drop boxes to be distributed within Division 9 and phones can already be donated at participating businesses, such as White Tigress Coolum, or Council offices. FROM THE ED’S DESK

Now, as we launch into our seventh year, I’m going to take a couple of months away from publishing and hand over the reins to my husband Geoff who’s been there since the start, helping me to turn ideas into reality. It’s time for me to consolidate, take a breath, refresh, and spend some quality time with our children and my family. It’s been a long, fun and enjoyable ride and I thank you as readers and advertisers for your continued support of the publication as it makes its way into the letterbox each month. Just like me, I’m sure Geoff will be keen

to hear from anyone with a story to share, a local to profile, or a handy hint for the neighbourhood. We’re all for locals supporting locals, and I’m excited to share the news here of another great local initiative for anyone out there who enjoys eating out. The Peregian Project has been created with the support of Peregian Beach Business Association and Sails Lifestyle Resort and offers diners the chance to win two nights at Sails Lifestyle Resort simply by grabbing a “bingo” style card from participating food venues and having it marked off as they visit from September 3 to October 1. There are 20 restaurants across Peregian Springs, Peregian Beach and Peregian Breeze involved - with big kudos to Sharl from Pizzami and Georgie from Goldies for pushing the concept forward. Watch for #peregianproject on local social media lists. All the best, Rebecca

TAKE TIME TO ASK - ARE YOU OK? ON SEPTEMBER 9, THE SECOND FRIDAY IN SEPTEMBER, R U OK DAY WILL TAKE PLACE REMINDING US ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF LOOKING OUT FOR THE MENTAL HEALTH OF OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

R U Ok Day community ambassador Justin Geange, who is also a Mates in Construction Field Officer, said it was really important to dig deep when talking to people to understand whether they were “really” ok. Justin said he’d found staying connected to people, checking in, grabbing a coffee with them and creating meaningful moments had helped him to help others find help and avoid the risk of suicide. He said listening to understand, not to respond helped, as did being aware of stressors such as job loss or the loss of a loved one. Justin said the aim was to support the

person in need, to guide them to seek advice, to stand with them on the journey, and to check in with them along the way to make sure they were still ok. On the Sunshine Coast, males account for four out of five reported suicides with the majority aged between 40 to 60 years. The hunt for other ways to help those at risk continues too. At the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute scientists are testing the use of oral ketamine as part of a treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Rotary Noosa Daybreak, Australian Rotary Health Research Foundation and the University of the Sunshine Coast are funding a Doctoral Student for the research.

LOCAL LAD WINS BEER BATTLE BLACK COCKATOO SMOKED LAGER.

Fair bet that’s not a combination of words you’d expect to read in one line at any point in time, but it turns out it was a winning combination for Peregian Springs’ local Josh Batten who came up with it. Josh created a story and flavour profile for a beer inspired by Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast as part of a recent competition by Eumundi Brewery and beat 300 other entrants to have it produced for sale. Eumundi Brewery Head Brewer Chris Sheehan, pictured right, said they had canned 500 cartons of the limited release beer which would be sold through the Imperial Hotel at Eumundi and select bottle shops across the Coast. Josh said he wanted to honour the proud stature of the iconic bird.

6

“My unique ingredients were peat smoked malt and cold brew coffee and I was inspired to create a beer that reflected the bushfires of 2019, and the rural fire brigade who put their lives on the line to protect our community,” he said. “The crisp, clean body and hint of smokiness reminds us of the formidable beauty of our landscape.” For his efforts, Josh won $5000 and a carton of Eumundi beer a month for 12 months. Inspired by Josh’s tribute to the fireys, Eumundi Brewery also donated $5000 to the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade.

LITTLE PROGRESS ON PROJECTS CHECKING IN ON COUNCIL’S DEVELOPMENT “I” SITE THIS MONTH, AS OF AUGUST 29, A DECISION WAS YET TO BE MADE ON THE APPROVAL OR OTHERWISE OF THE DEVELOPMENT AT 1 RIDGEVIEW DRIVE, PEREGIAN SPRINGS (MCU21/0080).

This project, on the Motorway side of Koel Circuit near Peregian Springs Shopping Centre, proposes 38 residential units, 4 SOHO Commercial Units and a Food and Drink outlet and is being developed by Billy Lids Australia Pty Ltd with planning by Pivotal Perspective Pty Ltd. Public consultation ended on July 21. The proposal is marked as “Decision Pending”. The second development in this area, on the Ridgeview Drive side of Koel Circuit, for 58 units and a hotel has reached the point of having a formal application accepted, with

Council now seeking clarification of some elements of the application before it will be allowed to progress further. Documents available on development “i” show Council officers seeking clarification of how the proposal fits with the Maroochy Plan 2000 and the Coolum Ridges Master Plan across a range of matters including: building height; setbacks to adjoining residences; building dimensions and modelling; visual amenity; acoustic amenity; waste management; and building orientation and interactions with streets. Another development of interest to local residents is that of 2 Longwood Drive, where developers plan to convert the old golf sales centre site to a childcare centre. As at 12 August 2021, development “i” indicates it is at the “Recommence Assessment” phase of the process.

At Peregian Springs Chiropractic it is our privilege to be able to assist our local community. Chiropractic care offers conservative treatment of neck pain, back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. * DVA’s welcome *

WATCH OUT - MAGPIES ARE OUT! IT’S MAGPIE SEASON AND TIME TO TAKE CARE AROUND THEIR NESTS.

Sunshine Coast Council Natural Areas Conservation Officer Tyron de Kauwe said not all magpies swoop. “Magpies are pretty amazing birds and in fact only 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop,” Mr de Kauwe said. “Magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years and can identify individuals by their facial features, even recognising all the people in their neighbourhood. “When they walk around with their head tilted, they are actually listening for prey and are capable of hearing earthworms and larvae moving underground. “They are also extraordinary parents, looking after their young for up to two years.” Mr de Kauwe offered the following tips on staying safe during swooping season.

“Swooping begins once the eggs are hatched and ends once the chicks have left the nest, which is about six to eight weeks,” Mr de Kauwe said. “When you see male magpies defending their territory, understand they are merely defending their young. “Move quickly through the area but do not run. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses or use an umbrella. Dismount and walk your bike and, where possible, walk in groups – or avoid the area altogether. “Don’t act aggressively towards them as they have a very long memory, and this will just encourage further defensive behaviour in the future.” Magpies are protected under the Nature Conservation Act. Penalties for injuring magpies vary based on circumstances.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH MARK HORSFALL

LIVING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT ON SUNDAY THE 1ST OF AUGUST I WAS SUPPOSED TO HOLD MY ANNUAL CONCERT FUNDRAISER FOR CHAPLAINCY.

I was at the shops the morning before when the Music Director called me to tell me of the impending lockdown. To say that we were both extremely disappointed at having to cancel the concert would be an understatement. Over the last month I have talked to many like me who have had to deal with the disappointment of cancelling holidays, weddings and events. Disappointment is a strong emotion often not talked about and can hover at the front of your mind and niggle at the back bringing you a grey perspective on life. Here are a few tips to overcome it. 1. LET IT OUT

Speak to a friend, family member, or even a therapist about how the disappointment has affected you. Too often (particularly men) we just suppress and bottle our feelings. Writing or even drawing in a journal can be a great tool to let out our feelings as well. It is important to give yourself some time to feel and express your disappointment. 2. DON’T BROOD, RATHER MOVE ON

Don’t get trapped in your disappointment but come to terms with the circumstances and move forward. I have come across many people who have let the past severely restrict and limited their future. Winston Churchill said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm”.

12

3.HAVE SOME PERSPECTIVE.

It can feel like the end of the world when you experience disappointment. Having a broader perspective than your own view on a situation can alleviate the power disappointment holds. Being open to talking and listening to others can help you gain a larger view perspective 4. LIVE IN THE MOMENT

The disappointment you may have could be a result of something that is totally out of your control, like Covid. Accept it and focus on what you can do today. Be present in what you have in front of you now and not caught up in the hangups of the past. 5. EVALUATE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

Disappointment can be a result of unrealistic expectations we have of ourselves and others. Ask yourself, will this matter in a month, 6 months or a year’s time? Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill, rather be flexible enough to adjust your expectations. If you have experienced disappointment like I have this month then I sincerely hope you can be like me and acknowledge, accept and move on focusing on the now and the potential of tomorrow. * Mark Horsfall is the Chaplain at Coolum State High School

HAVE YOU BEEN HURT IN THE SURF? Here are the most common surfing injuries we see in our local surfers and a few tips to avoid them! Neck Pain - Long periods of paddling can compress the small joints in the cervical spine. Lift the chest more than the chin when paddling and a good stretch routine for the upper back can help! Check out our youtube for some great stretch routines! Shoulder Injuries - Pain from the rotator cuff tendons can occur from repetitive motion of paddling. Staying strong in the scapula muscles, lifting your chest and bending the elbows

Peregian Springs News - September 2021

when paddling can reduce shoulder impingement! Knee ligament sprains can occur with twisting forces when turning. The knee is not designed to twist and if your hips are tight or weak it can create additional force into the knee. Maintaining hip mobility and strength can help you get low for a tight barrel and reduce knee load! You can avoid some of these injuries by complimenting your surfing with a strength program! Check out our physio- led classes, perfect for injury management!

COUNCIL NEWS WITH DIVISION 9 COUNCILLOR MARIA SUAREZ

GRANT WINS FOR LOCAL CLUBS THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS

II’d like to start this column by saying a big thank-you to all the community groups and their volunteers who donate their precious time, energy and passion into delivering services to our community and environment. In late August, Council partnered with 138 community groups and 19 environmental groups to provide funding for three years. Through the Community Partnership Funding Program, 138 Sunshine Coast community organisations received a share of $990,000 each year for the next three years to help cover operational costs such as rent, communications and administration. And through the Environment Levy Partnership Funding Program 19 groups will share in $610,000 each year for the next three years to also cover operational expenses. This support means these groups can invest their time and energy into their core work, whether it be caring for our wildlife and natural environment, managing community halls or a sporting association, supporting business and industry through the chamber of commerce, as well as much more. Congratulations to Coolum District Coast Care Group Inc, which operates across

POLICE NEWS - WITH SENIOR CONSTABLE KARINA HAWKINS ON BEHALF OF COOLUM POLICE, I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND OUR GRATITUDE TO THE COMMUNITY.

August has been a trying month for many with the lockdowns that have taken place. This has affected everyone, but it is great to see the majority of the community following the Health Directives. Our calls for service in relation to COVID-19 related tasks have increased immensely. Unfortunately, this does not deter criminals. 16

Please remember to lock up your valuable items. Police attended 12 calls for service in the Peregian Springs area during the past month. Police also dealt with a further 15 matters, 9 of which were traffic matters. This was disappointing to see as Road Safety Week ran from the 16th to the 20th August. Please remember school holidays are fast approaching and there will be more vehicles and children around. peregianspringsnews.com.au

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

MOVEMENT ON ROAD WORKS UPDATE ON ROADWORKS

Locals would be well aware of the poor condition of Yandina Coolum Road west of the Sunshine Motorway. Earlier this year I recorded a video from inside the cab with a local truck driver, highlighting just how dangerous the road surface is. With the road having been listed in RACQ’s top ten worst roads, it was welcome news when TMR responded to our calls with a commitment to resurfacing some of the road. We had been told the work was happening in April, and after numerous inquiries about its status, we’ve now been told it’s been delayed, but should be completed before the end of the year. As soon as we have a start date, I will let the community know. In other road news, some testing and sampling works are due to start on the Sunshine Motorway and David Low Way overpass at Pacific Paradise from Monday 6 September. These works will involve taking samples of the four bridge surfaces to assist with future surfacing, and will be completed between the hours of 6pm-6am over an eight day period. There may be some delays due to lane closures for the duration of these works, so please remember to slow down and observe signage when travelling in this area. PARLIAMENT

It’s back to Parliament this week, with the draft Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation one of the bills expected to be debated. I’ve spent the last couple of months surveying the community, and I am grateful to everyone who has taken the time to share their views and their personal stories. I’ve also met with a range of stakeholders representing both sides of the argument, and I intend to carefully review all the feedback before making a decision. Other important legislation due to be debated in the next sitting period also includes the bill to extend the Government’s emergency powers. Lockdowns and ongoing restrictions have come at the expense of many people’s livelihoods, not to mention the impact on physical, emotional and mental health. At this time, our priority must be reaching that critical 70-80% vaccination rate, so we can start rebuilding our economy, and a pathway out of the pandemic. That starts with each and every one of us, and ensuring we get vaccinated. STAY IN TOUCH

If you have any State Government matters to discuss with me, drop by the office at 11 Heathfield Rd, Coolum Beach, call 5406 7900 or email ninderry@parliament.gov.au
