SPIRIT OF PEREGIAN RETURNS
UNITING COMMUNITY FOR CHARITY AND LIFESAVING SUPPORT
Spirit of Peregian is back for its fourth year with this year’s ‘Sea of Blue’ event raising funds for much-loved charity Katie Rose Cottage Hospice as well as lifesaving equipment for Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday, 9 September.
The concept for the event was created by Peregian residents’ association Peregian Family and Friends President, Leigh McCready, who said: “We started the event to recognise the heroic work of the emergency service men and women who fought hard to save many
homes after fires tore through the community in 2019.”
“The goal of this annual event is to give back to the community whilst creating a fun environment that everyone is welcome to be a part of. In 2023 we are doing a Long Lunch instead of an evening Gala and we have invited three very special local restaurants to each cater a course.”
“It’s always an amazing atmosphere in Peregian Park, with live music, great food & drinks from incredible chefs, and guest speakers who really resonate with the audience.”

EMBRACING SPRING'S RENEWAL
HELLO COMMUNITY,
This month holds a special significance as we celebrate not only the arrival of Spring but also the cherished occasion of Father's Day. As the blossoms unfold, flowers bloom and nature awakens, Spring encourages us to look forward, and hit the reset button. Whether it be resolutions that have been restarted or just time to kickstart a change, Spring brings with it a sense of cheerful optimism.
The milder temperatures and extension of daylight hours allow for the perfect time to explore all our shores have to offer. It’s such a pleasant time to be outdoors without the extreme Summer heat, and doesn’t nature just illuminate during this season.
Whilst out and about just a friendly reminder from our local snake catchers that snakes are on the move. Early spring weather has seen our slithery reptile friends move in great numbers and due to mating season, snakes are being encountered anywhere and everywhere. So just be mindful whilst you explore our shores.
As Spring is sprung, we encourage you to immerse yourself in the richness and insights generously woven into these pages. From heartfelt tales to expert guidance and inspiring narratives, there's a treasure trove of content for everyone to relish.
Lastly, we extend our warmest wishes to all fathers, grandfathers and father figures, for your love, support and guidance that has enriched our lives in countless ways. We salute you. Happy Father’s Day to you all!
Warmest Regards,

KOALA ENCOUNTERS
REPORT KOALA SIGHTINGS FOR CONSERVATION EFFORTS
This little ted was out and looking for love when a local resident snapped it crossing the road. Sunshine Coast Council’s Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez is calling on others to report the koala sightings through the Queensland Government’s QWildlife app.
“There are some amazing images of Sunshine Coast koalas being uploaded to QWildlife,” Cr Suarez said.
“This one was snapped at Palmview Forest next to a fauna crossing.
“Just in the last month we have seen three koala sightings in Buderim and a number of koalas reported between Mapleton and Montville.
“When koala sightings are reported by using
the app, Council is able to access the data and it helps to build our knowledge about Sunshine Coast koala populations – which is one of the goals of our Sunshine Coast Koala Conservation Plan.
“It’s simple and easy to do, and you don’t always need a photo – you can report koalas even if you only hear their distinctive bellow.
“The app helps you to identify if the koala is healthy, sick or injured and connects you with wildlife carers who can help.”
Report koala sightings
If you see a wild koala, report it using the free QWildlife app for iOS and Android.
If you find sick or injured wildlife, call 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625).
Koala breeding season
Councillor Suarez encouraged people to keep an eye out for koalas to help keep them safe this breeding season.
“Koala breeding season runs from August to February, and this is when koalas are most active, often crossing roads and coming into people’s backyards,” Cr Suarez said.
“Council is part of an Australia-wide effort to protect koalas and we encourage our community to join us to protect these iconic Australian animals.”
Search ‘koalas’ on Council’s website for more tips on how you can help or visit https:// www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/environment/ native-animals/koala-conservation.
PLASTIC FREE COOLUM
A NEW SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE
Coolum Surf Club has embarked on a significant sustainability initiative by introducing reusable coffee cups.
This venture, presumed to be the first of its kind among surf clubs nationwide, involves a borrow cup system established in collaboration with Noosa-based Pottery for the Planet, creators of ceramic takeaway coffee cups.
This coincides with the launch of Plastic Free Coolum, a pilot program led by local chamber of commerce, Coolum Business and Tourism and proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s major grants program.
President of Coolum Business and Tourism, Mark Cameron, said the chamber wanted to help make Coolum one of the most sustainable places on the Sunshine Coast to live, work and play. The initiative arises from a

shared appreciation for Coolum's pristine environment and a collective responsibility among businesses to manage their environmental impact.
“Plastic Free Coolum is a free program and makes it easy for businesses to make the switch. There has been such a great response from local businesses and the community already.”
Coolum Surf Club is a program ambassador and has already earned Plastic Free Coolum
Champion status thanks to its commitment to sustainability which includes installing solar panels, diverting organics from landfill and diverting recyclables from landfill.
Coolum based Raw Bulk Foods Online is helping people reduce their use of single use plastics through their innovative, world-first reusable bags made from recycled ocean beach and landfill plastics used to ship everyday groceries like pasta, rice and lollies.
An innovative startup located right here in the heart of Coolum, who plan to expand their model throughout Australia.
Plastic Free Coolum presents a remarkable opportunity to inspire our local community to eliminate single-use plastic.
We can make a significant difference considering the potential effects our daily habits have on our environment and doing our part in preserving it for generations to come.
Creating a plastic-free future not just for Coolum, but throughout Australia.”
PEREGIAN SPRINGS COMMUNITY CRIME FORUM COMING SOON
COMMUNITY CRIME FORUM TO TACKLE RISING INCIDENTS IN PEREGIAN SPRINGS
After speaking with a number of affected locals about the increase in stolen cars and anti-social behavior in Peregian Springs and surrounds, we are planning on hosting a community Crime Forum early next month.
It’s no secret police numbers are down. Coolum Police Station used to have 24 officers rostered around the clock. Now, there’s only 9, and it’s not uncommon for there to be no police on patrol in our area, as there’s simply not enough staff. When you combine that with weaker laws, it’s not surprising we’ve seen a 111% increase in stolen vehicles on the Sunshine Coast in the past three months.
It’s not good enough.
The aim of the crime forum will be to give locals an opportunity to have their say, share their stories and put forward suggestions on
how we can improve safety in our community.
One suggestion already flagged is to set up a local Neighbourhood Watch group. This is a great first step, and the forum will provide a great opportunity to speak with QPS officers and stakeholders on how they can support us.
The event will be held on Wednesday 6 September from 7pm-8pm in the hall at Peregian Springs State School. Numbers are restricted due to the facility, so if you are interested in attending, you will need to register. Keep an eye out for further information in your letterbox and online in coming days.
INSPIRING THE NATION AND PAVING THE WAY FOR FEMALE ATHLETES
How great are the Matildas? It has been phenomenal to watch our female socceroos capture the heart of our nation and fans around the world. Their performance in the World Cup has been one of the most significant moments in our sporting history, and I am so pleased to see our state and federal government finally commit much needed funding into more facilities for female players, and more funding for our grassroots clubs, to ensure the Matildas legacy endures.

SIGNIFICANCE OF REGISTRATION AND IDENTIFICATION
PET REGO LEADS TO HAPPY REUNION
Tucker, a curious Kelpie cross from Yaroomba Beach, escaped while his owner Carinne was out. As soon as she arrived home, she knew he was gone.
“The usual jingle of his tags was conspicuously absent. I dashed around the yard calling his name in a panic, it was then I saw he had done a little doggie excavation and snuck out under our deck.
“You always think the worst with so many busy roads around. “Not long after, I was so relieved when I got a call from a supervisor at the pound. A kind community member called in to say they had found him.
It was easy to identify Tucker because he had his blue Sunshine Coast Council registration tag on,” Carinne said.
There is a misconception that a microchip is the key to identifying a lost pet, Tucker’s escape demonstrates how quickly your furry friend can be identified over the phone with their Council registration number.
The annual Sunshine Coast pet registration period is coming up in September so now is the perfect time to make sure your pet’s details are up to date.
If you have moved to a new house, your pet has been recently desexed or microchipped or your pet has sadly passed away, it’s important to ensure Council has the correct registration details.Registration costs just $26 if your dog or cat is desexed and it’s free if you have a current pensioner card for a desexed and microchipped animal.
Service Excellence Portfolio Councillor Winston Johnston said pet registration was a key part of being a responsible pet owner.
“Making sure your pet is registered and
microchipped, and its details are up to date, helps Council get your pet get back home quickly if they roam from your property,” Cr Johnston said.
“There are more than 60,000 pets registered in the Sunshine Coast Council region and the registration information also helps us to provide pet-related services where they are needed most.”
You can update or cancel your pet’s registration details via
https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ pay-and-apply/cat-and-dog-registration or by searching ‘cat and dog registration’ on Council’s website.
You can also register with MyCouncil to update any of the following animal details:
• pensioner details
• desexing
• microchipping

SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
LOCAL UPDATE
Dates are still being finalised on publishing the consultation report for Lions & Norrie Job Park masterplan, however it should be in the next month or so. I will also advise the community on construction dates to repair the landslip on David Low Way near First Bay when they are confirmed.
BLUE HEART SUNSHINE COAST ON SHOW
It was a pleasure to attend the Asia Pacific Blue Carbon Workshop organised by The Nature Conservancy in early August, along with 80 guests from across the Asia Pacific.
Council is working to understand the barriers, challenges and opportunities that go along with blue carbon farming so we can share our learnings with private landholders in the Blue Heart area.
By doing this, we hope to upscale the project, protect more of the floodplain in the future and importantly, provide a pathway for an alternative source of income for these landholders.

MAKING TRACKS TOGETHER
Marine Turtle Conservation Plan
The Sunshine Coast Marine Turtle Conservation Plan, recently adopted by the Council, outlines a strategic initiative to safeguard marine turtle populations.
Developed through a collaborative effort involving Sunshine Coast Council, Kabi Kabi First Nation Peoples, Queensland Government, an independent Technical Advisory Panel, and community leaders, the plan is geared towards rejuvenating the turtle population.
By targeting threats like light pollution and bolstering support for volunteer programs, such as TurtleCare Sunshine Coast and Coolum and North Shore Coast Care, the plan aims to enhance marine turtle nesting and hatchling success.
To mitigate light pollution, the plan proposes turtle-friendly adjustments to existing public lighting in sensitive coastal areas.
A comprehensive toolkit will be developed to offer practical guidance to residents, local businesses, and the development sector in
Marine turtle plan making tracks together
minimizing light pollution.
The plan also underscores the significance of well-considered dune vegetation, which can create an inviting nesting environment for turtles.
This collaborative endeavor aligns with state and national initiatives to halt the decline of marine turtle populations and and will guide Council decision making to achieve future conservation and management goals for nesting marine turtles and hatchlings within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area.
Ultimately, the plan strives to support the recovery of robust, self-sustaining marine turtle populations by mitigating threats, enhancing habitat quality, and fostering community-based management practices.
The implementation plan will be reviewed and updated annually. The adopted Sunshine Coast Marine Turtle Conservation plan is available at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au by searching “turtlecare”.
Hobbling With Heel Pain?
Are you waking up first thing in the morning and hobbling with heel pain?
Is your walking or running capacity limited by heel pain?
Is your heel pain is becoming chronic?
There can be many reasons for developing heel pain. Common reasons can include plantar fasciitis, achilles tendon problems and/or referral of pain from the lower back. It is essential that you have an accurate assessment and diagnosis so a treatment pathway can be formed.
Here are some tips from the Synergy Physio team to explain the two most common causes of heel pain:
Plantar fasciitis
Medial heel pain with prolonged periods of standing, first thing in the morning or walking on a hard surfaces. Causes can include tight calf muscles, poor footwear, loss of foot arch strength and weight gain. Try regular calf stretches and more supportive footwear including our archies! However to fully recover a specific strengthening program to target your plantar fascia strength is often needed.
Achilles tendon pain
Felt toward the back of the heel, achilles tendon pain is often caused by tendon weakness. Stretches don’t usually help! Other causes can include poor footwear, a sudden increase in walking or running or poor running technique. The key to resolving this is an accurate assessment and a specific tendon strengthening program.
Our team love helping the community with their health! We offer thorough assessment with longer initial consultations so you don’t feel rushed. We offer hands on therapy, exercise rehabilitation classes, massage, after hours appointments and on the spot claims.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF REFINANCING?
Welcome to the first edition of Loans Unpacked, whe re we're diving headfirst into the world of refinancing. So, what is refinancing a ll about? Think of it as giving your loan a well-deserved upgrade to one that works hard er for you, and is more aligned with your needs. There can be some amazing benefits !
MORE CASH IN YOUR POCKET: Over the past 15 months, interest rates have been on the rise and you might be feeling the pinch . Refinancing could secure you a better rate, which means lower monthly repayments. Who wouldn't want that?
TAILOR YOUR TERMS: Refinancing could provide you with options to twea k your loan terms. You might be able to extend or red uce the life of your loan, reduce your monthly fees, or lock in a fixed interest rate briefly to give your repayments more certainty. And if you want to put your savings to work and cut down on interest, an offset account could be on the cards.
FREE UP FUNDS: Has your home's value shot up since you first got your loan? A refinance might al low you to tap into those funds. Imagine having extra cash for a new property deposit, home renovation, education costs, investing in other ass ets such as shares, or even a new car or family holiday .
SIMPLIFY YOUR DEBTS: Life can get cluttered with multiple debts - credit cards, car loans, business loans and more. Refinancing might allow you to roll those various debts into your home loan , resulting in one tidy monthly payment. It could als o potentially reduce the overall interest you pay on those debts.
Remember, loans aren’t one-size-fits-all. If your current loan or lender is leaving you less than impressed, it might be a good time to have a chat with your Finance Broker (that's me!) about exploring your options. My services are completely free!

ADDRESSING COST OF LIVING, HOUSING, AND COMMUNITY CONCERNS
LISTENING TO LOCALS
Recently I was out and about across the Fairfax electorate listening to locals as part of my Winter Road Trip.
Cost of living and housing affordability were top of the list of concerns for most families I’ve been speaking with as rising mortgage payments, rising prices at the checkout and rising energy bills are hitting household budgets hard.
Taming inflation must be the Labor Government’s priority, but that unfortunately is not the case and we are not seeing workable solutions on the housing crisis.
The Coalition did not support Labor's Housing Australia Future Fund Bill because it required $10 billion of borrowed money to capitalise a fund with uncertain returns and it cannot guarantee a single home will be built before the next election, if at all.
COMMUNITY PHARMACIES IGNORED
The Albanese Government has ignored pleas from community pharmacists by passing the 60-day dispensing legislation this week.
I support cheaper medicines and I’m ok with 60-day dispensing, but Labor has failed to consider the flowon impacts of this policy, which will hurt pharmacies and increase costs for some of our most vulnerable residents.
WOMEN’S SPORT INSPIRES POLICY
Women’s sporting teams have been smashing it lately. We have seen the Australian women’s national cricket team retain the Ashes trophy, the Diamonds take home the Netball World Cup and the Matildas win the heart of the nation with their performance in the FIFA World Cup.
Despite the interest in women’s sport, too many young girls are still being forced to change in the carpark of their sporting club. I was proud to have secured more than $300k for female changerooms at two sports clubs on the Coast, but we need more.
That’s why I fully support the Coalition’s announcement to keep the momentum building in female sports by committing $250 million towards community sporting infrastructure.

WE WELCOME YOU TO OUR REGION
We want the Sunshine Coast to be welcoming and inclusive to all our residents and visitors to our beautiful region.
Sunshine Coast Council has reinforced its commitment to cultural diversity and inclusion by signing a commitment letter and becoming a member of the Welcoming Cities Network.
Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said Welcoming Cities was a national network of local governments, committed to an Australia where everyone can participate in social, cultural, economic and local life.
“Our region is home to migrants from 150 countries, with 96 different languages spoken and one in five residents born overseas,” Cr Law said.
“As a Welcoming Cities member, we are provided a framework to formalise, capture and celebrate our inclusion and diversity work.
It also expands the ways in which the Sunshine Coast welcomes international guests, investors and skilled migrants to the region and support them.
Together we can continue to build a more connected and inclusive community.”
Sunshine Coast Council CEO Emma Thomas said this was a great step forward for the region.
“We place importance on inclusion and being a welcoming organisation and this commitment is a natural progression to translate throughout our Council and the Sunshine Coast region,” Ms Thomas said.
“We look forward to working with the Welcoming Cities team and strive to keep improving our region to make sure everyone feels welcome.”
Welcoming Australia CEO Aleem Ali said the Sunshine Coast was joining a network of 78 councils representing more than 40 per cent of the Australian population.
“Members of the rapidly growing Welcoming Cities network value the diversity of their communities and a fair go for all,” Mr Ali said.
“We’re excited to support Sunshine Coast Council showcase the great work already happening in the community and advance the region as a place where people of all backgrounds can find a sense of value and belonging.”

Mastering the art of wrist hinge in your golf swing can be a game-changer for better strikes.

Church recess (4)
The secret is in understanding the timing and mechanics of the wrists.
Former Indian currency (4)
Start with a relaxed grip, if you are holding the grip to tight you won’t be able to hinge your wrists and alternatively you will use the wrong areas of your body.
A good test for this is to keep your hands where they are (ideally while you’re addressing the golf ball) and hinge your wrists to make the club shaft and club head bend upwards, without lifting your hands up.
This is the feeling you want to have as the backswing initiates.
Gradually hinge as you swing back, with the goal of a 90degree angle between your club shaft and lead arm at the top of your backswing.
With great wrist hinge it allows the energy to be stored and release at the perfect moment when you strike the ball, enhancing the contact and optimising club head speed.
