WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS WHO LOVE THE OUTDOORS

A HANDS-ON WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM IS CULTIVATING BRIGHT CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUNSHINE COAST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

A five-day work experience program is open to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 looking to obtain on-thejobskillsandexperiencewiththeSunshine CoastCouncilParksandGardensBranchacrosssix fields.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Tim Burns said the unique program would provide students the opportunity to experience basic technical skills withintheirchosenfieldwhilegaininginsightinto thevariousparksandgardens-relatedcareers.

“The work experience program provides young peopleanopportunitytoexplorepotentialcareers andconnectwiththecommunityandcouncil,”Cr Burnssaid.

“If you’re drawn to the outdoors and have a passion for tree care, why not explore work experienceinarboriculture.

“Keen to branch out? Nursery operations or horticulturecouldbetheplaceforyou”

Students can also learn more about behind-thescenesactivitiestorunabranchthroughthefield ofadministration.

The program allows students to gain practical experience in a parks and gardens operational environmentwithinkeycareerfields,including: horticulture

arboriculture

turfandirrigation

nurseryoperations

infrastructuremaintenance administration

Aswellasdevelopingtransferableskills,suchas technical, communication, teamwork and an understanding how the Parks and Gardens Branchoperates,studentsreceiveacertificateof completionattheendofthefive-dayprogram.

Parks and Gardens Manager Nicholas Coluccio said the program offered students a fantastic opportunity to be mentored by the experienced Parksteamwhilegrowinganewcareerpath.

“Students are encouraged to join the program andcomebehind-the-scenestoseewhatittakes to keep our parks and gardens well-presented andsafeforourcommunity,”MrColucciosaid Bepartofateamimprovingourregion

“Participants will be given an opportunity to learn about the technical aspects of parks and gardens, and how the team plays an important role in keeping our parks beautiful for generationstocome.

“Council values mentoring and developing confidence for participants in the work experience program as well as providing a supportiveenvironmentforhighschoolstudents tomakeinformeddecisionsabouttheirfuture.”

Declanrecentlyconductedworkexperiencewith the Parks Infrastructure Maintenance team and gained first-hand experience in park and playgroundmaintenanceandassistplumbing. Parks Infrastructure Services Delivery Leader Andrew Vondeling said Declan had a hardworkingattitudeandwaseagertolearn.

“Declanwasagreatteamplayerandenjoyedhis time with our team so much he came back for more experience late last year,” Mr Vondeling said.

‘HUGE LOSS’: MAYOR SEEKS STATE HELP AFTER BONZA COLLAPSE

COAST MAYOR ROSANNA NATOLI IS CALLING ON THE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT TO ADDRESS THE WIDEREACHING IMPACTS FELT THROUGH THE LOSS OF BONZA AIRLINES.

Mayor Natoli has written to Premier Steven Miles seeking a meeting to discuss the economic impacts on the region, which could exceed $100 million.

Those affected include the airline’s 150 staff, as well as suppliers, cleaning, catering and support servicesandthemanyaccommodationproviders, restaurants, retailers, car rental and attractions, who had benefited from the record numbers of visitorsbroughtinbyBonza.

Bonza had provided a much-needed increase in air capacity, which was a huge boost to the tourismindustryandcontributedtowardsrecord spending by holidaymakers on the Coast last year.

Local businesses throughout the region benefitted from the additional passengers that travelled directly into the Sunshine Coast from intrastate and interstate locations across Australia including Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the Northern Territory – destinations that were notpreviouslydirectlyconnected.

In addition, the airline had established its headquarters on the Sunshine Coast with an estimated150staffintheregion.

Mayor Natoli said the region had benefited significantly from Bonza Airlines being located here.

“Its presence, along with the other major airlines, helped achieve a record number of interstate visitorslastyear,”MayorNatolisaid.

“I have written to the Premier of Queensland to explainwhatthislossmeanstoourregion.

“I’ve requested an opportunity to discuss options andtalkthroughhowwecanworkinpartnership withtheQueenslandGovernmenttorecoverfrom Bonza’ssuddenanddisappointingcollapse.

“Theannualeconomicimpactassociatedwiththe loss of Bonza is likely to exceed $100 million and will be felt hard, particularly by the region’s smallerbusinesses.

“Manyofthesebusinesseswillnowbejoiningthe reported60,000creditorsinalengthyprocesswith thehopeofrecoupingsomeoftheirlosses.

“The number of indirect jobs affected by the suddenclosureisalsolikelytobesignificantwith dozensofbusinessesimpacted.

“The majority of products sold on board Bonza weresuppliedby11SEQbasedsuppliers.

“Whilstwearehopefulasolutionmightbefound to allow Bonza to resume operations, the likelihoodofthisoutcomenowappearsremotewhich is why we need Queensland Government support now to mitigate the impacts on our community.”

AMENDMENTS TO RESTRICT SHORTSTAY ACCOMMODATION IN NOOSA COUNCIL

PREVENTING FURTHER SHORT-TERM ACCOMMODATION FROM POPPING UP IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS IS A KEY FOCUS OF THE PLANNING SCHEME AMENDMENTS, NOW OUT FOR COMMENT.

Strategy and Environment Director Kim Rawlings said the amendments will ensure new housing in medium and high-density residential areas is for permanentresidents,andnotvisitors.

Unless already approved, new short-term accommodationofwholedwellingswillnolonger be permitted in residential zones under the proposedchangestoNoosaPlan.

“OneoftheproposedchangestoNoosaPlan2020 seekstoensureanynewshort-stay

accommodation is contained within the tourist accommodation zone. This is to prevent any more short-term properties from popping up in ourresidentialareas,”shesaid.

“These changes seek to further help protect neighbourhoods from the impacts of short-stay properties and importantly minimise the loss of anymorepermanenthousingstocktotheshortstaymarket.

Previously, Council brought in a local law that triggered an approval process and required all short-stay let property owners to appoint a 24hour contact to act on complaints within 20 minutes.

“Wealsointroducedacodeofconductforguests aimedatensuringtheconductofguestsdoesnot impactonsurroundingresidentsoramenity.”

PETITION TO FIX THE LIGHTS

Justareminderaboutthepetitiontoreplace thelightingonDavidLowWay,neartheScrub Roadintersection.Earlierthisyear,aspartof the safety improvements, TMR replaced the lighting with new lighting that’s completely inappropriate for the area, resulting in it being lit up like a stadium at night. Local residents raised their concerns, and despite pleading with the Department of Transport andMainRoadsandtheMinistertofixit,our calls have fallen on deaf ears. STATE BUDGET

From the perspective of our electorate and the wider Sunshine Coast region, the State Budgetwasamassivedisappointment.Other than some much needed short-term cost of living relief, there was no funding for longterm economic security or long overdue infrastructure upgrades. There was funding forsomeimportantlocalroadprojects,butit falls short of what is actually needed to address congestion and keep up with populationgrowth

OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS, FOOD PRICES HAVE SHOT UP 10%, HOUSING 12%, INSURANCE 26% AND ELECTRICITY PRICES ARE UP TO 36% HIGHER.

Due to input and advice from Sunshine Coast locals,wesucceededinreformingtaxlawwhenit came to Men’s Sheds, our community’s submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Careinformedreformsinthatsectorandsomeof the design features of JobKeeper was a direct consequenceofmehearingfromlocals.

We must now work together to tackle cost-ofliving.
