The legs on the bus go... MORE HELP to solve traffic and parking issues around Peregian Springs State School might be a step away with a ‘walking school bus’ idea being discussed by Neighbourhood Watch Coolum 10 (Peregian Springs) and Coolum Police. The Walking School Bus is a virtual school bus designed to encourage children to walk to and from school and offers parents and children an alternative to short car trips. Neighbourhood Watch Coolum 10 (Peregian Springs) has funding from NHW Australasia to help start the program at Peregian Springs State School and a trial could start before the end of term. Area Coordinators Leigh Boggis and Paula Lyall say children gain travel skills and confidence while increasing their physical activity levels, safe routes to school are actively in use and traffic congestion around the school is reduced. Coolum Police Officers, Volunteers in Policing and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group will be actively involved however assistance from parents will also be required. Many say congestion in the state school carpark, which is controlled by Council, along with The Avenue outside the school, has eased with the successful school crossing, better signage and police presence... From the Ed’s desk One of the reasons I started the Local Connect column— getting word out about local groups—is though we are more electronically connected than ever I see we are still lonely with many moving here physically isolated from the warm and easy connection of close friends and family. You can’t just pop in on people much any more. We seem to prefer to schedule in an iphone appointment. Are we busy or worried the house isn’t as perfect as the online lives portrayed. That’s why Chappy Mark’s column this month is a really timely one (always timely but this one particularly) as it mentions joining a group and reaching out. It might take time to find the right group for you. Hard in a time poor world– but well worth it if you find it. With many working from home and so little office or meeting space in Peregian Springs, combatting professional isolation might be at hand with the Dulcie Joe Co — a creative and entrepreneurial collective at Peregian Beach offering weekday shared workspace for $10 an hour. Email Tess Lehman for more info hello@dulciejoeco.com For more on the PSRA AGM see www.peregianspringsnews.com.au Until next time,

Craft beer, cocktails, coffee and fresh produce CRAFT beer, cocktails, coffees from around the world, a healthy food cafe and even a market area will soon be on offer at the cafe space on the corner Balgownie Dr and Ridgeview Drive. Residents have spotted builders in the old Benchmark site working on a re-fit of the space. Peregian Springs News went searching for answers on what may soon be appearing and caught up with Dorney & Bear, the team behind the fresh food delivery service, The Market by Dorney and Bear. Dorney & Bear confirmed they were working towards opening on October 31. “A new craft beer and cocktail bar is being fitted as we speak,” they said. “We will have a healthy food cafe with an amazing variety of coffee following nine months of research and meeting roasters & farmer/growers around the world. “One of the most exciting aspects of our fit out is the market area which will incorporate a range of organic or locally sourced fresh produce, deli and bakery provisions.. “Suffice to say the venue will be very different to anything there previously.” Peregian Springs News will keep following the story via our facebook page.

Resident’s group bands together for change MORE than 150 local residents turned out to The Pool Cafe on Saturday, October 15, to help officially launch the Peregian Springs Residents Association Inc (PSRA) at its inaugural AGM. The PSRA was formed in the wake of a recent public meeting opposing plans to develop residential blocks on golf course land. Its mission, stated on its facebook page, is to “identify issues of concern to the Peregian Springs community and represent its interests when dealing with the council, state government, developers and other organisations on matters impacting on the community.” State Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, attended the meeting and provided $200 towards running costs

of the PSRA. Mr Elmes addressed the meeting and encouraged residents to band together as their fight involved a big company. “People power is people prepared to turn up time after time ..If you join today, tomorrow, talk to your neighbours to make this as big an organisation as possible..you will win if you keep going to meetings,” he said. PSRA is looking at pursuing areas of resident concern including the Ridges development, Balgownie Drive land rezoning and others issues including alleged trampling of minority shareholder rights in the Golf Course closure. Waiting game on land rezoning PEREGIAN Springs residents who opposed an application by FKP Residential (an Aveo subsidiary) to change the zoning of land at Balgownie Dr to residential from sport and recreation are awaiting the outcome of their submissions. Applications regarding the development application for a 1664m2 parcel of land closed on October 14. The land was golf course land up until February this year when FKP Residential successfully had the golf course boundary moved and the parcel became part of the estate parcel. It still carries a “Sport and Recreation” zoning though. FKP Residential now wants to change the zoning from sport and

4

recreation to residential to enable two houses to be built. In a letter to Council on 8 August, FKP Residential’s Town Planner said the Developer had sought to reconfigure 2 lots into 5 lots with 3 detached dwellings, but now reduced that and seeks to reconfigure one lot into 2 lots and seeks approval for 2 detached houses, if the rezoning from Sport and recreation to residential is approved by Council. The land is between the 6th and 7th fairway at the northern end of Balgownie Drive. The Developer’s planning report for boundary realignment in November 2015 said the boundary "realignment" would remove an irregular "dog leg "

www.peregianspringsnews.com.au

Balgownie Drive D.A. from golf land (which was “deemed to be surplus to golf course needs”) to incorporate into residential land and that the “realignment will not result in any adverse impacts with respect to access, use or landscape amenity of the existing golf course, nor will it result in any material loss of existing sport and recreation land”. Peregian Springs Residents Association objects to the rezoning saying it will set a precedent and allow more Sport and Rec zoning here and across the Sunshine Coast to be lost and for more “residential creep” resulting in more green space disappearing. It says the rezoning is inconsistent with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014, which does not anticipate residential development to occur in this zone. It says sport and

recreation rezoning applications for other parts of Peregian Springs have been recently met with a strong refusal by Council and the public, and that rezoning is an “ unreasonable imposition” on residents who have chosen to live or invest in the area with the reasonable expectation that Sport and Recreation zoning would be protected for public amenity. PSN contacted Aveo to ask whether FKP Residential or the owner of the Golf Course land had any more plans, after this Balgownie rezoning application, to lodge any more rezoning applications to change Sport and Rec zoning anywhere in Peregian Springs. We’ll let you know when we receive an answer. We will continue to follow the story online at peregianspringsnews.com.au

Walking school bus is possible... FROM PAGE 1.. However, parking remains an issue on the Ridges Body Corporate road on Honeyeater Crescent where resident complaints led the controlling body corporate –the Principal Body Corporate (PBC) to seek to install wooden bollards to stop people parking where they shouldn’t. In a case brought by two subsidiary body corporate groups regarding proposed expenditure of around $15,000 by the PBC to install the bollards and line road markings on Honeyeater Crescent, Adjudicator Underdown of the Office of the Body Corporate and Community Management Commission noted there

6

was an ‘evident dilemma about the school parking’. In that case the Adjudicator viewed as ‘regrettable’ that the PBC was invited to make a written submission in the case at the final order stage of the application and did not do so. The Adjudicator also noted although the parking issue, ‘is not the making of either of the parties to this application’, (it) might have been explored further had it (the PBC) done so.’ (made a written submission in the case). Search still on for more play space OUR story on Council investigating locations for older kids play space in Peregian Springs drew some great comment. One resident said physical and mental well being is improved with outdoor recreation and the Estate has little to cater for the growing demographic of teenagers and young adults unless they can catch a bus or have their parent drive to Coolum or Peregian Beach or further afield. The resident said a basketball halfcourt would go some of the way to providing a recreation option other than ogling a screen (which we all do), and we should consider a skate park. The resident said some “would be unhappy with this suggestion but the

10

fact is many Peregian Springs youth are highly engaged with the growing skateboarding community. What’s more, skateboarding’s popularity and professionalism is set to be boosted significantly with inclusion in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.” Additionally, the resident said a skate park would ease the crowds at Coolum and Peregian Beach parks, making it safer for everyone. “I have heard the argument that skate parks can bring with them a negative association. I would suggest that bored youth could be more dangerous if left with nothing at all to do!.” What do you think should go in a play space and where it should go? E: peregianspringsnews@gmail.com

Soccer stars in the making A NEW soccer skills academy here in Peregian Springs aims to bring the world game pitch to our patch. Peregian Springs resident and father of three Mitch Cattermole, pictured below, a professional soccer coach working with the Sunshine Coast Fire, saw an opportunity with Football Star Academy to combine the game and good coaching and make it accessible and fun for kids of all skill and fitness levels all year round. The Academy specialises in soccer skills development sessions available at various times for all kids – no matter if they have ever played the game or not. Sessions known as ‘clinics’ are tailored to individual skill level and follow the Football Federation Australia curriculum and are delivered by accredited coaches. The Academy does not compete with clubs – Mitch says it fits with the Clubs. “It’s also great for kids who have never played...if they do join a club they won’t be uncomfortable, they won’t be the worst player. We spend time with them, develop their confidence and 12

they can fit straight in,” Mitch says. Mitch, who is the owner and head coach of the Sunshine Coast Football Star Academy, said it also has Elite squads for more advanced players who are invited to trial to be part of a squad that suits their level. These squads are designed for the intensive development of gifted players. A recent weekend open day at Peregian Springs State School attracted more than 60 boys and girls, aged around 4-12 years, to try a “clinic” and meet other local kids. Football Star Academy was founded in 2002 in Melbourne by former NSL, A-League player and Danish Cup winner Peter Nikolakopoulos. Former Ajax and Manchester United player Jesper Olssen came on board later as Director of Coaching. It has grown to about 60 locations in Australia with India and China launching in 2017. Peregian Springs is the first Queensland location for FSA, which also offers birthday parties, school holiday camps, interstate tournaments, international trips, elite training and much more. Registrations open now for Term 4 for after school & weekend sessions. Call Mitch - 0421 375 536, email qld12.football@sportstaracademy.com.au or

* MANOR LIBRARY BOOK CLUB

A GOOD book helps you discover more about yourself and others and if you’re lucky retirement gives you the chance to read more and expand those horizons. Residents at the Aveo Peregian Springs Country Club are fortunate to have had a group of talented and dedicated people who have developed the reading offering from a bookcase of donated books and games in in Villa 16 in 2003 to the library it is today at Gracemere Manor. With its wide literary offering and vibrant book discussion group, it is an intellectually and socially stimulating hub for residents and a great resource that has been built over time and is growing with a new Library opening soon. The book discussion group began in 2004 when former resident Sue Nyman proposed to organise the donated books they had and obtain some book spine

labels to categorise the books and the Manor Library began to take shape. More shelves were then purchased and donated to accommodate the expanding collection. Many keen volunteers give their time in the Library labelling and shelving. Books are donated regularly by Annie of Annie’s Books Peregian and purchased using donated funds from the Residents’ Association Committee. Carla Hull from Coolum Library has donated the majority of the Large Print books. Continued pg 16

Chappy’s Column— Family Focus

Reach out to beat loneliness

18

DURING the week I was checking out Australian Bureau Statistics stats and articles in preparation for Mental Health Week (Oct 9-15). ABS believe the next epidemic our nation will face is loneliness. Loneliness can have a large impact on people both emotionally and physically. Social neuroscientist John Cacioppo writes in his book “Loneliness”- “a sense of isolation or social rejection disrupts not only our thinking abilities and will-power but also our immune systems, and can be as damaging as obesity or smoking”. Human beings are biologically, emotionally and socially wired to connect and belong. Australian Health and leading World Physiologists recognize the sense to belong and connect with others is one of the major human needs So what can you do if you, or your teenager, are feeling a sense of loneliness? What can you do if you want to prevent loneliness from occurring? Social media does not equal meaningful relationships: Give your phone and devices a spell and have conversations with people. Looking at our phones or devices, having lots of Facebook friends, twitter, Instagram and living in an online world won’t satisfy the need to connect and

belong for most people. Make sure physical and meaningful relationships are cultivated with others around you through conversations and time. Get involved in a group: There are plenty of churches, youth programs, community groups (Lions, Men’s Shed.. sports clubs etc.) that you could participate in. Keep trying them till you find one with people you connect to and where you have a sense of belonging. Give them time as it may not happen right away. I belong to a church and many there have become my extended family and I would be lost without those connections. Reach out to someone. Last month I mentioned we often don’t ask for help when we need it. If you look closely you will find there is someone caring in your circle or community that you could connect with. If you’re feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness please reach out to someone. Well that’s it for this month I’m off to have a coffee with a friend.

Dedication of Bible Garden and Acknowledgement of Country Plaque: Holy Spirit Anglican Church has installed a Bible garden as a place for quiet reflection at the front of its property on the corner of Beach Rd and Perry St, Coolum Beach. It is also placing an Acknowledgement of

Country plaque by the front door as part of the Anglican Church's commitment to reconciliation. Both will be blessed by Bishop Godfrey Fryar on Saturday 19 November at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come to the dedication and afternoon tea afterwards (gold coin donation).

Cannabis vote a good result THE Public Health (Medicinal Cannabis) Bill 2016 was debated and passed in Parliament earlier this month and while the issue is not without controversy, I believe well controlled and regulated medicinal cannabis has a place in our health care system, and is a humane response to the pain and suffering felt by so many in our community. Positive results from extensive research into the therapeutic benefits of medicinal cannabis led the Commonwealth Government to establish a national licensing scheme for medicinal cannabis products in February this year, which paved the way for the QLD government to set up their own scheme. We are living longer thanks to medical advances but sometimes the side effects of treatment is worse than the disease itself, particularly when the condition is terminal. Medicinal

cannabis has also been proven to assist children living with severe epilepsy, for whom traditional medicines are ineffective. One must wonder what other brain or nerve disorders will be proven to benefit from its use in the future? In an electorate-wide survey I conducted last year, 79 per cent of respondents supported voluntary euthanasia. If pain and suffering could be significantly reduced, and if a reasonable quality of life could be achieved with the use of medicinal cannabis, I wonder if that statistic would have been different. Before we can have a debate on euthanasia, we should have explored all of the possibilities of lessening pain and suffering, the kind that is so intolerable, that death seems to be the only option. For more information about the legislation and to read the speech I gave in Parliament on this important issue visit my website www.glen.elmes.com.

Why should people go to the trouble of reviewing their loans? MORTGATE MATTERS with Trevor Ryan Aussie Home Loans Phone: 0411 211 401 WHY should you review your home loan regularly? Firstly, to save money. By refinancing you can take advantage of the current market and could find a better deal. Moving to a lower interest rate and keeping the same loan term gives you two ways to save. You save in the short-term by paying lower monthly repayments and you can save in the long-term by paying less overall interest. The other good reason is to pay off your loan sooner. By getting a lower interest rate it means you can pay what you currently pay each month but could reduce the term of the loan and this means saving of interest.

The market has changed a lot in the last few years and the home loan you currently have may not be the right one for you. Something to note is that banks often offer better rates to new customers than to existing customers in an effort to win new business. So don’t be afraid to look at switching banks to take advantage of some of the specials that may be out there. Taking the time to look for a better deal could save you thousands!

Are you getting a great interest rate on your loan?

Investing via Exchange Traded Funds WEALTH NEWS with Tom Wigzell & Aaron Cross Patersons Peregian Springs Phone: 5409 6120 INVESTORS can open up a world of trading opportunity through Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). ETFs are a type of fund that owns assets such as commodities, stocks and derivatives (synthetic), and divides that ownership into shares that are sold on a stock exchange like the ASX. ETFs can be very useful for balancing Australian focused portfolios with international exposure. For instance there are many globally focused ETFs that offer quick access and diversification options for investors. These can be focused globally, on a single country, or a single stock index like the US S&P500 or NASDAQ, representing a relatively low cost way to quickly obtain international portfolio exposure. Working Example: As an example the VanEck MSCI World ex Australia Quality ETF trades on the ASX under the code QUAL. Through purchasing

units in this ETF, investors are buying a basket of 300 high quality companies from 19 countries. Key points:  QUAL is an ASX-listed ETF that provides investors with exposure to 300 quality companies from around the world  The companies are included in the portfolio based on; high ROE, stable earnings growth and low financial leverage  The portfolio has sizable exposure to sectors such as IT/healthcare and is underweight Financials  Exposure to 19 countries in North America, Europe and Asia  The fund is unhedged giving investors exposure to the underlying currencies of the various companies (predominately US$)  QUAL is listed on the ASX and trades under the code QUAL.AXW – there is no W8-BEN or other foreign paperwork required. “Safe, Inclusive and Connected Neighbourhoods and Online Communities” OCTOBER, 2016 update IT has been 12 months since we launched Coolum 10 NHW Group, how time has flown! Thank-you to everyone that has supported us, it is appreciated. We had a relatively quiet month during September and despite the lack of decent surf conditions during the school holidays there was still plenty to enjoy. The sightings of whales and dolphins at our local beaches was definitely a treat! On the local community front, we recently acquired funding from NHW Australasia to help start a Walking School Bus at Peregian Springs State School. The Walking School Bus (WSB) is a virtual school bus designed to encourage children to walk to and from school and offers parents and children an alternative to short car trips to school. Three important advantages stem from this program: children gain travel skills and confidence while increasing their physical activity levels, safe routes to school are actively in use and traffic congestion around the school is reduced. If all goes well we hope to trial the walking school bus before the end of this term. Coolum Police Officers, Volunteers in Policing and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group will be actively involved however we will be looking for parents to assist us. Stay tuned for more information in the school newsletter or via our
