EMC news – One of the gas pipelines going through Renfrew county could soon be transformed into an oil pipeline. Three representatives of TransCanada Corp attended McNab-Braeside council recently to give councillors a heads-up that the change is in the works. The company is proposing to switch the newest of the two gas pipelines going through the area to oil. Alain Parise explained that the gas line is being underutilized, but there is a demand for more oil for reďŹ neries in Ontario and the Maritimes. Transforming the gas pipeline would be much less disruptive than building a new one, he noted.

“We’re very excited about this project, he told council. “But we’re not sure if it will go ahead yet. He explained that enough customers for the oil have to come forward and sign contracts to make it feasible. The project, which won’t be completed until 2017 if approved, would include completing a pipeline from Alberta and Saskatchewan to Ontario with an extension to Quebec and the East Coast. If fully realized, the huge $5-billion pipeline project could mean between 500,000 to 800,000 barrels of crude oil a day would be going through Renfrew County and the township. The company needs demand for a minimum 500,000 barrels to go ahead. See PIPELINE, Page 3

Highlands meets the Valley The McNab Days Scottish Festival isn’t complete without Highland games. Even the littlest ones test their strength with the sheaf toss. The burlap bag filled with straw is pinned with a pitchfork and hurled as far as six-year-old Owen Daber can muster Sunday at the Waba Museum grounds. Next up is this Saturday’s Riverdrive Festival. EMC news - It’s been a long time coming, but McNab-Braeside council has come to a decision on the Miller Group’s proposal to expand its Braeside quarry operations and add a permanent asphalt plant at the location. In a 3-2 vote June 18, the ofďŹ cial plan changes needed to facilitate the asphalt plant

were refused, while the expansion plans have been approved with a caveat attached. Council allowed the aggregate extraction area to be increased, saying Miller’s must respect a 300-metre setback from any dwelling. The original motion had called for 450 metres. However, it has rejected the inclusion of the permanent asphalt plant. See ASPHALT Page 4

Happy Birthday Canada EMC events - Arnprior and McNab-Braeside residents are all set to celebrate Canada Day with a host of activities in store on Monday, July 1.
