ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE The Great Southern Festival offers a unique moment to engage with artists from the local region and across the globe. These visionaries, mavericks and dreamers create opportunities for us to see, understand and re-imagine our world. This year’s Great Southern program is a mix of local visual art, music and culture with visiting Australian and international theatre, music, film and more. Our celebration of Albany’s iconic skate run, The Snake Run Project, promises to be a unique spectacle and an absolute highlight, while the popular Playmakers series, a particular passion of the Great Southern Program manager Rod Vervest, showcases the work of Western Australian instrument makers. We are delighted to be presenting some of the world’s most exceptional artists, and they are excited to be performing in this truly beautiful part of the world. Dive into the program and join us on a big, bold adventure. Wendy Martin
Perth International Arts Festival acknowledges that Great Southern Festival events take place on the traditional lands of the Noongar people and we wish to pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this Country. As we celebrate the work of contemporary artists from the local area and around the world, we also acknowledge and respect the continuing culture of the Noongar and their contribution to the life of this region.
HON COLIN BARNETT MLA PREMIER OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA Western Australia’s Great Southern region is known for its vibrant arts and culture and has nurtured the Great Southern Festival for 13 years. The Festival has been proudly supported by the State Government through the Great Southern Development Commission and Lotterywest since 2003. This year’s 14th Great Southern Festival promises to be even more exciting for the people of the Great Southern Region. Audiences will be able to enjoy our largest multi-arts satellite festival; featuring works that resonate and connect them with what it means to be Western Australian and part of the international community.
The unforgettable and immersive program of the 2016 Great Southern Festival puts the Great Southern on the map as a tourist destination of choice for lifestyle, arts and culture. I congratulate the Great Southern on this ongoing investment in such a diverse and accessible cultural program. I’d also like to congratulate new Artistic Director, Wendy Martin, for bringing her vision to the Great Southern Festival.

THE SNAKE RUN PROJECT The Snake Run Project celebrates skateboarding as an art form and those who perform on a board as true artists. And it also celebrates the iconic ‘stage’ for this art – Albany’s legendary Snake Run. American skating legend Russ Howell first rode the winding curves of the Snake Run 40 years ago, and he returns to Albany to be part of the celebrations. There are many opportunities for the local community to be involved as both participants as well as audience members so contact arts@albany.wa.gov.au to get involved. THE SNAKE RUN SHOW Professional contemporary dancers come together with highly skilled skateboarders for a dynamic performance exploring the relationships between the snake, skin and the history of the Snake Run site. Local bands and community performers will also be involved in a show that promises surprising moments of beauty amongst the daring and unexpected. THE SOUNDS OF SKATE Artist James Gentle will create a stunning sound design to accompany the performance. This soundscape will use purpose-built instruments to reference punk and surf/skater music and will include fragments of vocal recordings created with local skateboarders about the Snake Run. INKING THE SKIN As part of the project, the sides of the Snake Run will be painted like the skin of a snake. Local students, skaters and neighbours are invited to join the Inking the Skin workshops to create individual ‘identity symbols’ that will be sprayed onto the concrete of the Snake Run. Each design represents its creator’s connection to this legendary place – the skin lost, the fear conquered and the love found. 5

MAMANG KOORT – HEART OF THE WHALE Mamang Koort – Heart of the Whale is a new exhibition focusing on Albany’s Princess Royal Harbour. A group of five Indigenous and non-Indigenous visual artists have worked in close collaboration since May to produce artworks built on collective memory and shared experiences of harbour objects and sites. Using objects taken from the harbour, the artists have allowed the wind and water to produce markings on them in an automative creative process. The resulting works on paper and canvas celebrate small details that speak of the tides, weather, colours, textures, and sounds found in the Albany Harbour and the aesthetics of two different cultures with a shared love of this special place.

UNDERMAJORDOMO MINOR
Somewhere between Melbourne and Sydney, and nestled between the pristine Sapphire Coast and the imposing Mount Gulaga, lies the beautiful old dairy farm which is now the home of River Cottage Australia. WORK LIKE ANY OTHER One of the most exciting discoveries of 2016, Virginia Reeves’ novel Work Like Any Other is a deeply affecting story of dispossession, injustice and redemption. Placing itself perfectly alongside acclaimed work by Philipp Meyer, Jane Smiley and J M Coetzee, this debut novel charts the story of Roscoe T Martin in rural Alabama in the 1920s. Gorgeously spare and brilliantly insightful, it will stay with you long after you finish reading it. Join Virginia Reeves for an in depth look at moral complexity and guilt. ALBANY TOWN HALL Mon 22 Feb, 7.30–8.30pm TICKETS $15
CHANGING PACE Jasper Fforde’s writing is an eclectic mix of genres. He expertly blends fantasy, comedy, science fiction, thriller, crime and satire to produce stories with a distinctive voice, and his series have been highly acclaimed and much loved worldwide. Here he talks about the publication of his first standalone novel Early Riser and how writing a story in isolation changes the creative dynamic from writing characters and plot that exist in more than one work. ALBANY TOWN HALL Tue 23 Feb, 6–7pm TICKETS $15
THE WATER KNIFE Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Windup Girl was one of the most celebrated science fiction debuts of all time, winning both the Hugo and Nebula awards. His new novel The Water Knife is a brilliantly imagined, thrilling exploration of a future hammered by climate change and drought. Bringing the potential effects of climate change vividly to life, Bacigalupi weaves a compelling tale that calls into question our moral obligations in caring for the planet. Join him for a discussion about his new book. ALBANY TOWN HALL Tue 23 Feb, 7.30–8.30pm TICKETS $15 27
