display home OF THE WEEK

THE BIGGER PICTURE

W

INNING the Best Small-Lot Housing category for homes from $350,000 to $500,000 at the HIA’s latest Perth Housing Awards “vindicated everything the team at Renowned has been saying about the house”, says Jim Ilias, general manager at Residential Building WA, which includes the Renowned Collection brand. “It just doesn’t have the narrow-lot feel that other homes built on narrow sites can have,” he says. “As a result, it’s been a popular seller and we’ve had amazing reviews from our clients. The HIA judges were also very favourable about the design.” Even though the Korda was built on a 12mwide block of 316sq m, it’s still a spacious family home, where each member has ample room to move about and pursue their own interests. “It has a big home feel on a small lot,” Jim says. “We shortened the lengths of the corridors to avoid wasting any space and creating unnecessary divisions.” The company’s Luna display in Churchlands,

which was a finalist in the same awards category as the Korda, is another stunning example of how clever design can make the most of any block size. “The Renowned brand was relaunched about four years ago and is now a market leader in two-storey, narrow-lot homes,” Jim says. “Our designers are able to forecast trends and apply them to all of our brands.” This is certainly evident in the Korda, which has an eye-catching elevation, all the rooms today’s buyers expect in a modern home and a high-level specification. An upstairs lounge, home theatre and resortworthy indoor/outdoor everyday living area are some of the highlights. The display home’s sitting room opens to a balcony that takes in Port Coogee’s ocean vista. Because Renowned’s designers recognise that separation between the children’s zone and the parents’ retreat is a must-have for many buyers, the Korda has three double bedrooms upstairs and a luxurious master suite on the ground floor. Ageing occupants will appreciate the fact

✱ Visit the new Display

Home of the Week gallery at PerthNow and feast your eyes on more of the Korda’s impressive features.

HOME

that keeping the main bedroom downstairs will enable the Korda to function as a singlestorey home, should the need arise. Jim says this is an important consideration for older buyers who need to build a two-storey home to realise the potential of their block, but who don’t necessarily need or want the extra level. A ceiling fan in the alfresco area, log-effect gas fire in the sitting room and frameless glass balustrading are included in the highspec design, which is at the top end of the Renowned Collection range. Quantum Quartz benchtops and stainless steel appliances, including a dishwasher, feature in the chef-worthy kitchen. “With prices starting at about $254,715, we tend to fit most budgets,” Jim says. “We have more than 40 designs that can be popped on small, narrow lots. It’s definitely a growing section of the market.”

expert ADVICE

Having the right soil is crucial for a successful garden, says Aaron East Landscaping & Garden Design owner Aaron East

W

HEN you intend to spend a small fortune on plants, don’t forget to budget for fertile new soil. You shouldn’t plant anything until you’ve developed a rich, growing platform and if you get the soil right, your plants will have the best possible start. Often people overlook the importance of replacing or building up their soil. Perth, as we all know, is built on sand, which rapidly loses water and nutrients. It’s great for the beach, but not for our gardens. Good soil is crucial to a plant’s success and is the foundation of a beautiful garden. Follow some simple rules and you can create a paradise for your plants.

SOIL DEVELOPMENT Investing in your soil is more important than mulching. Before you even think about mulch, make sure the soil underneath is of a high quality because once the mulch breaks down and blows away, you will be left with your poor soil foundation. Soil development plays an integral role in any garden because plants are continually growing and searching for nutrients and water.

DRAINAGE Soil drainage in Perth is generally not a problem because it’s mostly sand. However, too much sand creates a water-retention problem. At the other end of the scale, clay soils bind together tightly to form a thick clump, which repels water. Without drainage, the soil can turn anaerobic (doesn’t contain oxygen) and your plants will struggle.

HOME

Soil preparation prior to planting: 1. Remove the existing topsoil/sand (a minimum of 200mm). 2. Add your organic matter. You can blend your own using blended composts, blood and bone, straw, animal manures, etc. I recommend 25 per cent compost to 75 per cent manure. The easier option is to go to a local soil supplier and purchase a 100 per cent organic matter blended soil. Be aware that some soils may already contain sand. 3. Replace the sand with the new mixture and blend thoroughly into the sand. The ratio needs to be one-third sand to two-thirds organic matter. Once mixed together, the soil should be fairly dark and friable, but not too crumbly. Organisms such as bacteria, fungus and nematodes living in the organic matter you have added will slowly create a mineral food source for the plants. You also don’t want to destroy all your hard work by compacting your new soil. Aeration of the soil is important to ensure these organisms thrive.

SOIL pH As you build up your soil you need to be aware of its pH, so you can establish if you have an acidic or an alkaline soil. A pH of between 6 to 7 is neutral and is the desired level most plants prefer. Lower than 6 is becoming too acidic and the pH needs to be increased with the addition of lime or poultry manure, depending on the selected plants. If the pH level is higher than 7 it can be too alkaline for most plants and aluminium sulphate and sulphur can be applied to lower the pH level. Follow these simple steps and you’ll have a beautiful garden for a long time to come.

BGC has recognised the value of having a scullery as an alternate space for the preparation of food and has included it in two of its new displays

A

SCULLERY was often considered a luxury addition in many big, old, English manor homes. However, two of BGC’s new displays are proving that sculleries are not just for the rich and famous – in fact, they are well within reach of today’s homebuyers. The Ashwood by National Homes is the company’s latest display in Ellenbrook. The scullery, which is located behind the kitchen and adjacent to the laundry, is a convenient, practical place to store additional appliances and prepare the family meal, keeping the mess and mayhem contained and out of sight. “Australians’ current passion for multicultural cuisine and culinary-focused activities has led us to look into revamping kitchen design for the modern family,” says BGC’s design manager Dusan Balbi. “Culinary chaos can be hidden from guests who drop by at the last minute. Instead, the home exemplifies a clutter-free and orderly environment, where everything is in its place”. According to Dusan, the scullery has been designed close to the laundry in the Ashwood in a move reflecting successful international designs. “These designs incorporate the laundry and scullery to form a ‘utility area’ where all of the messy household tasks and appliances can be locked away out of sight. The scullery can become a ‘wet kitchen’ for heavy-purpose cooking and cleaning away from view, while

the ‘dry kitchen’ adjacent to living areas stays clean and easily maintained,” Dusan says. This duality of space also means that food can be prepared in a chemical-free environment. The dishes can be washed in one sink and the other can be used for washing food. “The scullery has been proven as an adaptable and desirable addition for today’s homebuyers,” Dusan says. The Le Mans by Commodore Homes in Ellenbrook takes this multipurpose area to a new level of convenience. “The scullery is also adjacent to the laundry in the Le Mans display, however it’s also located next to a large walk-in pantry and nearby to a walk-in linen closet,” Dusan says. Its design features plenty of under-sink storage and room for feature upgrades (such as larger ovens and additional cupboards). Commodore Homes brand manager Andrew Shue says any areas that offer additional storage always prove popular. “The fact that Commodore homes have plenty of storage has always been commented on. However, this multifunctional room is an added bonus and not something people expect. It’s definitely been a great selling point,” he says. ✱ National Homes’ Ashwood and Commodore’s Le Mans are both on display at Adlington Way in Ellenbrook. For more information on the Ashwood, contact National Homes, phone: 9214 1133. To find out more about Commodore’s Le Mans, phone: 1800 266 663.

home HELP

Q&A Q

I hope you can help me with a problem that isn’t directly related to cleaning (apart from the loads of washing I have done!). We have an issue with holes in our folded items (T-shirts, singlets, etc). The holes appear in exactly the same spot on all clothes and I have worked out that it is on the middle seam that faces outwards. There are no traces of moths or silverfish in the closet. We have had our house treated twice, but the holes keep reappearing. Items that are hanging haven’t been affected. I read on the internet that it is the larvae (which you can’t see) eating our clothes and leaving the holes. One suggestion was that I wash every item in our wardrobe and then iron it all to make sure any trace of larvae was killed off. This didn’t work because clothes that didn’t have holes before being washed now have holes. I have tried numerous other products, but nothing is working. It’s driving me nuts and costing me a fortune. I’m reluctant to buy any new pieces of clothing until this problem is sorted. Please help me. My husband thinks I’m creating the holes so that I can buy new clothes!

Soft outdoor furnishings can really boost your alfresco area’s comfort factor. Just remember that even though they are designed to be outside, they still require protection and regular cleaning. Storing your cushions and seat covers in a closed box will keep them clean and prevent sun damage when they are not in use. You can even use old tin trunks to store them in. Simply paint the tin trunks with rust-inhibiting paint and they will handle the weather quite well. Tin trunks can also be used to provide extra seating with the addition of a cushion. I have even been known to fill one of my tin trunks with ice and drinks when hosting a party.

cannot be sure that that is what is happening to you, so I will give you the solution for killing off and inhibiting the breeding cycle of insects in your wardrobes. One small tip is to make sure that you are washing your clothes without using too much soap; many insects are attracted to fats in residual soap left in clothes. If you have a top-loading washing machine, you should be using only a quarter of the recommended quantity of soap and adding two tablespoons of bicarb soda to it for all of your wash loads. Don’t use fabric conditioners or softeners. Instead, use two tablespoons of white vinegar in the fabric conditioner slot; that way it will go through the rinse cycle and make sure there is no residual soap in your clothes. Your clothes will also dry faster, clean better and get dirty less often. Keep your wardrobe free of bugs, mould, moisture and nasty odours with this sachet: Combine two bay leaves (moth deterrent), five whole cloves (kills mould spore and deters silverfish), one tea bag (kills dust mites), one to two

SHANNON LUSH Queen of clean heads of lavender (adds fragrance and deters flying insects) or half a teaspoon of lavender oil, two cedar chips (deters moths), one tablespoon of bicarb (absorbs moisture and helps prevent mould) in a bowl. Place the mixture in the centre of a small piece of muslin or cotton voile or into the toe of a pair of pantyhose and tie with string or ribbon. Should you still be having any problems, don’t hesitate to write back to me and include a photograph of the holes.

Q

I have been following your articles for months and I have to tell you are a wonder woman. My little problem has been bugging me for years and if I didn’t have to cook, I would just leave it there. I have what appears to be liquid nails on the face bricks in my kitchen next to my wall oven (pictured). I haven’t tried anything to remove it because I didn’t want to use anything toxic. Can you also tell me what I can use to give the face bricks a general clean from dirt and grime? They are around where

You may need to repeat this several times to get all of the glue off. The easiest way to clean your bricks down is to take a soft kitchen broom and rub a cake of normal bathroom soap across the bristles. Dampen it with a little warm water and sweep the bricks backwards and forwards until they are clean. This is a good chore to teach the children. When kids learn how to clean, they also learn how not to dirty.

the bar stools are and the kids rest their feet on them.

Thank you for your kind words. I hope A you find this tip equally useful. There are two different methods for removing liquid nails from bricks without damaging them and both involve heat. ✱ You can use a heat gun and a wire brush.

Heat guns can either be purchased very inexpensively from your hardware store or hired for the day. Just play the heat backwards and forwards across the glue, gradually increasing the temperature of the glue until it starts to bubble (don’t be tempted just to hold it in one place as it will heat up far too much and char). When it does start to bubble, brush it backwards and forwards with the wire brush. If you are concerned about the heat affecting any surrounding surfaces, simply cover them with cardboard. ✱ Wring a cloth out in boiling water (make sure you are wearing heavy rubber gloves) and hold it over the mark for about 30 seconds. Rub a small amount of

“Built-in furniture allows for custom pieces to be made to suit the design of a specific space and maximise its usage,” Leo says. The cabinetry in the all-white kitchen certainly has that sleek, integrated look that many buyers love. The feeling of light and space continues upstairs, with a glass balustrade to the staircase keeping the look fresh and open. As well as a sitting room at the top of the stairs, there are two minor double bedrooms, plus the master suite with its king-size shower and twin basins set in a long, stone-topped vanity unit. Having the garage at the rear gave APG the chance to work with the whole block frontage, creating a striking elevation that teams vertical timber batons with modern, cubist lines. A version of the Emporio, called the Armani, can be built from $358,710. There is also a version with the garage to the front and alternatives to suit 10m and 12m-wide rear-loaded lots. Paula Evans

as a gym, could quite easily be used as a fourth bedroom, guest bedroom, sewing room or even an extra study.” The Emporio enjoys an impressive sense of space, especially in the open-plan kitchen and living area that spills effortlessly outside. Stacker doors lead out to the alfresco where APG’s design team has incorporated elements such as a built-in fireplace, raised garden beds, stacked stone and an outdoor kitchen to seamlessly merge the indoors and the outdoors. “Visitors comment on the sense of space that gives the impression that the home is larger than it is,” Leo says. While it’s not included in the display specification, the Emporio also showcases just how effective built-in furniture can be when making the most of every bit of available space. The concept is illustrated to great effect in the study where slim, wall-mounted cupboards with lift-up doors sit above a custom-designed built-in desk. Display boxes surrounded by horizontal timber batons hang on the walls.

I

F the prospect of building on a small block fills you with dread, then a visit to the Emporio by APG may be just the confidence boost you need. Sitting comfortably on a block of just 364sq m in Churchlands, this roomy four-bedroom, three-bathroom display shows just how much can be achieved when space is at a premium. “With the average building block becoming smaller, small-lot design is definitely here to stay,” says Leo Callisto, sales and marketing manager at APG. The trick, says Leo, is to maximise every square metre of the house, adding flexibility wherever possible. “Flexibility can be defined as how and what each room can be used for – not only now, but in the future, too,” he says. “It is particularly important in small-lot design because when working with a smaller canvas, rooms need to be multifunctional. “In the case of the Emporio, the second master suite downstairs, although displayed

entertainment space that features a recessed ceiling and is plenty big enough for a familysized sofa. Keeping wasted space to a minimum was a priority for the design team so that the Da Vinci could offer families a spacious, wellzoned floor plan on a 480sq m block with a 16m frontage. Even the passageway to the minor bedrooms has been neatly expanded to become a computer nook big enough for two workstations. “The home has an area for every member of the family,” Ken says. Extra touches are evident throughout the home, from the twin vanities in the second bathroom and the fitted walk-in wardrobe in the master suite, to the “floating” cabinetry in the powder room and the artwork niche in the home theatre. When in comes to kerb appeal, the Da Vinci has that covered, too. The travertine feature wall that frames one of the bedroom windows has been combined with a striking roofline, a double-door entry and a strip of Colorbond louvres. Ross North has developed two alternative versions of the Da Vinci, enabling buyers to save up to $117,000 on the display model. Paula Evans

ITH no less than three outdoor living areas, the Da Vinci by Ross North Homes has been designed with a resort-style lifestyle in mind. As well as the main alfresco at the back of the home off the family room, this St Leonards display home features a private veranda off the ensuite bathroom and an extra entertaining area off the dining room. Ken Nair, sales and marketing manager at Ross North Homes, says zoning is the vital ingredient in a resort-inspired design. “Each courtyard is situated in a different location,” Ken says. “The courtyard outside the ensuite is ideal for a private spa, the main living area opens out to a little area for drinks, and the alfresco and barbecue area is for general dining and entertaining.” Ross North has underlined the resort-inspired styling by using natural materials and soft tones, especially in the ensuite off the main bedroom. The walk-in, hob-free shower that sits alongside the bath, the designer taps and basins, and the “floating” vanity unit all conjure up the sophisticated look of a top spa retreat. For an added touch of designer inspiration, the builder has also installed an outdoor shower to the courtyard that leads directly off the ensuite. A great addition to any garden, especially in conjunction with a spa or pool, outdoor showers continue to grow in popularity, Ken says. As well as creating that sense of “holiday hideaway”, an outdoor shower is a practical option for families who need to hose down the kids after a trip to the beach. The Da Vinci’s holiday-at-home vibe is evident inside as well as out. Banks of glazing and two sets of sliding doors make for a bright and spacious everyday living area, while the adjoining kitchen is sleek and contemporary and designed for families who love to entertain. Defined by a dropped bulkhead, the kitchen includes a slim wine rack built into the end of the worktop, a double oven stack, a 900mm cooktop and range hood, Essa Stone benchtops, overhead cupboards and a laminated double-door pantry. Sitting across the passageway from the kitchen, the home theatre is a dedicated

The clean lines and functional, open-plan layout are a nod to modern styles, while rustic and natural finishes add an earthy warmth and comfort. Classic shapes come in the form of the custom-made sofas and chairs that furnish many of the rooms. The builder turned to Artsource to add pops of bold colour on the walls, leasing works by local artists David Giles, Susanna Castleden and Kim Maple and commissioning an intriguing steel mesh sculpture by Britt Salt for the entry foyer. Built on a snug corner block that has a less than perfect orientation, the Palais harnesses the power of passive-solar design so that it is flooded with natural light and remains comfortable all year round. All the glazing is thermally broken double glazing to contribute to a 6-star energy rating and there is a vast underground water tank to harvest rainwater. Paula Evans

The builder has also had fun pushing the boundaries of some of its favourite materials. A wall of translucent quartz acts as a vast light-box behind the freestanding spa bath in the bathroom off the master suite, while hundreds of cedar blocks have been individually laid on the ceiling of the undercroft cellar like some giant timber puzzle. Spotted gum adds warmth throughout the home, whether it’s as flooring on the middle level, as cabinetry in the kitchen or as a ceiling feature to the kitchenette in the entertainment room. The Palais may be a 581sq m statement in lifestyle and luxury, but RiverStone hasn’t forgotten that beneath all the features there needs to be a workable floor plan for the modern family. Cue the practical mud room next to the four-car garage, the scullery off the kitchen, the built-in furniture in the living room and the custom-designed crisscross bookcase in the study. The upper-level alfresco terrace can instantly become part of the outdoors or the indoors, while the mid-level entertainment room opens to a sunny courtyard with a vast day bed on one side and to a private conversation area with a fire pit on the other. Much of the detail in the Palais is down to RiverStone’s interior designer, Emily LeCras, who has an eye for both practicality and presentation. “We deliberately didn’t follow one particular style or trend for this home,” Emily says. “We have tried to create a home that draws on both modern and classic design elements. It’s a hybrid style made up of many elements.”

CLASSY SHOWCASE IVERSTONE throws open the doors to its new flagship display home this weekend, giving visitors a delicious taste of luxury and lifestyle in a riverside setting. An upside-down home that enjoys a panoramic view of the river through walls of thermally broken double glazing, the three-level Palais boasts top-end materials, fabulous indoor/outdoor living, the latest technology and a show-stopping line-up of fixtures, fittings and finishes. Diane Wainwright, building and design consultant at RiverStone, says the new showcase highlights the natural, quality finishes that RiverStone has always been renowned for. “We have continued our tradition of incorporating natural materials throughout, while adding a clean, up-to-date, modern edge,” Diane says. “We are not interested in copying others’ ideas. Rather, we take the lead from what our clients are telling us they want.” If the Palais is anything to go by, RiverStone clients want a custom-designed and built home that is livable, looks great and has all the bells and whistles for a luxury lifestyle. There’s the glass-sided lift, the Kohler computer-controlled shower system and electronic privacy glass in the bathroom off the master suite, a temperature-controlled wine cellar, and twin TV screens and a twinkling “night sky” ceiling in the entertainment room. No detail has been overlooked, from the funky freestanding basin in one of the powder rooms, to the storage well at the back of the cooktop that keeps oils and spices close at hand.

There is no reason to avoid these products – just be selective in where you use them. Make a wall outside the shower or well away from the bath or vanity basin where there is little or no splashing water.

Here are some tips to keep your bathroom in tip-top condition:

SEALING

Although it can be an expensive, good tapware saves water, is easier to maintain and lasts longer. Do not overtighten your taps because this is the main cause of leaks. Attend to leaks when you notice them to prevent staining your toilets, baths or basins.

Over time, bathrooms without regular maintenance will leak water through walls and the floor into the adjoining rooms. Cracks in tiles and grout must be repaired and replaced.

I want to build a “green home”. Should I use a building designer or an architect to draw up my building plans? This is an interesting question. If you are building with a major project builder, this is a non-issue because these builders generally have an “in-house” design team that will draw up your building plans as a service to the client. However, ownership of the plans will remain with the builder, and you will be locked in to that builder if you wish to use that design. For one-off designs, the choice can be a difficult one. If you want to build a “green home”, find out which architects and/or building designers specialise in this area. Research their previous work to determine if it will meet your needs and your budget. Creativity and innovation can (but does not always) result in higher building costs. Smaller builders often engage a draftsperson who can produce drawings to comply with the Building Code of Australia. This draftsperson will usually know the builder’s requirements and design the building in line with the builder’s and the client’s needs. However, if you wish to draw up a set of plans that will be “hawked around” seeking the lowest price, a fully detailed and architecturally specified design may be best to ensure that your quotes are meaningful, and that you are comparing apples with apples. Cost and ownership of the plans are also considerations. Architectural fees are expensive, but you have the advantage of owning the building plans on which you can invite any builder to submit a price. Use of a project builder’s in-house design team will mean that ownership of the plans remains with the builder. In any event, most builders will not price another builder’s plans for fear of becoming involved in a breach of copyright dispute.

CCORDING to the Department of Health and Ageing, falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and hospital admissions. The majority of cases of deaths and hospitalisations following falls involve people aged over 65. About a third of people in this category have falls each year. My father, aged 95, was one of these people. Falls are the most common reason for premature admission to residential aged care, so preventing them can enable you to stay in your home and remain independent. The Department of Health and Ageing believes you can reduce the risk of suffering a serious fall in your home by taking a few simple precautions.

standards for construction. This does not require waterproofing systems throughout the bathroom, only to specific areas including your shower recess, and where fixtures (baths and basins) and walls meet. You might want to provide a higher standard than the minimum required. Ask your builder about the cost and options that are available.

EAGLE PLAYS BALL West Coast forward Mark LeCras bowed to his newlywed wife Emily’s talent and passion for interior design when it came to decorating their home, but he had his way with the home theatre

W

EST Coast Eagle Mark LeCras has a theory as to why new soft furnishings, artworks and bits of furniture keep appearing in the Gwelup home he shares with his wife, Emily. “I’ll go away for a game and there’ll be new cushions and new chairs when I get back. It’s almost like punishment for going away,” he laughs. “I’ll still be finding things around the house that she’s bought that I haven’t picked up on yet.” It’s no secret that Emily has a passion for interiors and an unerring eye for detail when it comes to styling a home. As RiverStone’s in-house interior designer and the daughter of RiverStone director Paul Marshall, Emily is well known for her design and styling talents. On the whole, Mark was certainly happy to bow to Emily’s judgment when it came to the house the couple built with RiverStone two

years ago – as long as there wasn’t anything “too girly” – but the Eagles forward did stake a claim on the interior of the home theatre. After winning the battle for the recliners, he has a dedicated space where fishing shows, sport and movies dominate the big screen. An aerial photograph of his home town, Cervantes, hangs on the wall, along with a surfboard bearing his family’s crest. “Emily had two boards custom-made – one for display and one for surfing,” Mark says. The couple, who got married just weeks ago, lead busy lives, so they wanted a low-maintenance home that combined modern styling with homely warmth. It also needed to be a home that they could entertain in. “Mark likes a lot of the beachy styles so we had to merge modern and rustic together,” Emily says. White walls and polished-concrete floors provide a contemporary backdrop to a host

of statement pieces, including a marri dining table, a glass-topped coffee table made from sections of slender tree trunks bundled together and a clear acrylic bubble chair that hangs from the ceiling. “One of my favourite designers is Kelly Hoppen and the bubble chair is one of her signature pieces so that was what inspired me,” Emily says. “It’s proved a bit controversial – people either love it or hate it.” Helping RiverStone clients create their own dream interiors, styling luxury display homes and liaising regularly with suppliers of everything from taps to tabletops means Emily has access to a global smorgasbord of ideas, products and inspiration. “It does make it hard to narrow it down to what you want, especially as these days new things are coming out all the time,” Emily says. “But as with client homes, I try to keep it all pretty timeless. “I love the modern floor plans and lifestyles,

but I really love rustic looks and natural finishes.” The newlyweds opted for an open-plan layout that feels bright and airy and helps make the most of their 310sq m block. Emily says the double-storey void above the family room was a big part of the brief, lending a tremendous amount of volume and height to the small-lot home. “We sacrificed having the fourth bedroom so that we could have the void,” she says. There are plenty of personal touches in the home, including a painting believed to be of Wedge, north of Lancelin, that Emily’s grandfather painted about 30 years ago. There are spaces for books, a stack of gallery shelves ready to go up to display family photographs, and a whiteboard marker always on hand in the kitchen to jot down notes and shopping lists on the glass splashback. “A home has got to be livable,” Emily says. PASSIONATE MIX

When the owners of this Dalkeith home wanted it modernised, they gave Gianpaolo Crugnale of Gage Roads Construction ‘‘room to move” and the result proved to be an award-winning effort

T

HIS renovated Dalkeith home is the epitome of resort-style living with its warm, open rooms and use of natural materials that draw its vibrant outdoor areas inside. With the owners aiming for a new, contemporary space to relax in, there was a need for plenty of light to flow between different areas so the house didn’t feel enclosed. Gianpaolo Crugnale, of Gage Roads Construction, has modernised the two-storey house and blended it beautifully with lush tropical gardens to create a fresh and inviting atmosphere. The revamped facade leads to a more open interior, with a colour and texture scheme that links it to the landscape design. The extensive use of timber, including a jarrah staircase, jarrah-panelled fireplace, sheoak eaves lining and individually designed, handcrafted timber furniture provide a unique and effective way of linking rooms together and softening the open-plan living space. Gianpaolo’s love of timber and attention to detail are also evident in his selection of

particular grained timbers and the way they can be used to create subtle design highlights . Timber runs from the dining and entertainment areas – which also feature customdesigned and manufactured furniture – to the stunning outdoor decks. Gianpaolo says the use of timber was one way of making sure the indoor and outdoor areas complemented each other and addressed the owners’ desire for relaxed, resort-style living. “The garden and the home were really one,” he says. “We wanted to make sure they weren’t two individual spaces.” A standout feature is the detail on the two recycled timber outdoor chairs, which Gianpaolo carved with a chainsaw. The indoor colour scheme of soft muted browns and beiges, highlighted with touches of bright tropical shades, flows through to the luxuriant green foliage surrounding the timber decking. Hand-picked black-and-white stone slabs complement the decking and create highlights that link back to the indoors, with the same stone used in the bathrooms. The sense of peace and fluidity in the garden is enhanced by a pond that flows under the decking and around the edge of the indoor

entertainment area. The pond also has a cooling effect on the house and works with other solar-passive features such as solar panels and north-facing windows to maximise the benefits of Perth’s climate. By taking advantage of the sunlight, especially in the outdoor entertaining area, and encouraging cross-ventilation and natural evaporative cooling processes, the house is designed to minimise electricity and airconditioning use. In giving Gianpaolo “some freedom and room to move,” the owners allowed him to renovate the house so as to best combine their needs for more modern living spaces – which included a new living area at the rear of the home, environmentally aware features and a beautifully exotic aesthetic. “Essentially it was about a passion for the design and for the build, coupled with great people,” Gianpaolo says. The combination proved to be a winning one, taking out the Renovations/Additions Project of the Year award at the HIA’s 2011 Perth Housing Awards. The project is now vying for recognition at this year’s Master Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards. Kate Dromey

PRESSING AHEAD A vintage printing press changed the lives of Angela Mitchell and Leah Dent who have expanded their graphic design studio into a storefront selling their products

T

HE story of Studio Bomba has taken a few twists and turns over the past five years. Launched as a client-based graphic design agency, Studio Bomba is now also an idyllic little Mount Hawthorn shop owned by Angela Mitchell and Leah Dent. If the surnames sound familiar, it’s because Mitchell & Dent is an offshoot of Studio Bomba, in which Angela and Leah indulge their love of letterpress artwork, greetings, custom stationery and invitations. To bring it back full circle, Mitchell & Dent’s products can be purchased from the shop. None of this might have come to pass had Angela and Leah not bought a vintage letterpress from a retired florist in rural Victoria three years ago. Until then, Studio Bomba was predominantly focused on corporate work, leaving the pair a bit stifled creatively. “We both illustrate and thought it would be nice to do something creative outside of client work,” Angela says. “We did some letterpress prints with a local printer and fell in love with the craft of printing. The letterpress was a real creative outlet for us.”

Leah says: “Designing for corporate clients is creative, but we don’t often get to explore our love of illustration and hand-lettered typography for clients such as accountants and mining companies. Buying the press really instigated change for us.” As Angela and Leah began creating their letterpress stationery, wedding invitations and greeting cards, Mitchell & Dent started to take shape. “Mitchell & Dent just kind of evolved over time,” Leah says. “It grew in spite of us, really.” From there, the shop – which opened in November – was a natural progression. “We soon realised that Mitchell & Dent was really enjoyable for us,” Leah says. “We create things we like and we think other people will like and we found that people were responding to it, which was really exciting. Then we realised we needed to open the doors so people could come in and look at Mitchell & Dent.” Although the duo have been in their space for three years, it was open by appointment only. “We thought it would be nice for people to look through, touch and feel, and be able to chat to us,” Angela says.

It was important to the pair that Studio Bomba stocked more than just Mitchell & Dent products and didn’t simply become an albeit lovely wedding stationery shop. “We describe Studio Bomba as a studio and shop of designery goodness,” laughs Leah. “We stock designer knick-knacks or art wares. “We stock products that are really thoughtful, such as the Zpagetti yarns made from clean clothing offcuts. It’s a thoughtful way of finding a use for something that would otherwise be wasted. “We also have these amazing inks and seals from France, from a company that’s been going since 1670. Napoleon used to buy his wax seals from them, which is kind of cool.” Angela’s favourite products include Nikki McWilliam’s hand-screen-printed cushion covers, designed and made in Scotland, as well as the Jeez Vanilla ceramics from Spain. “The cups have tattoo-style illustrations, which almost look like they’ve been done in ballpoint pen,” she says. Says Leah: “In the end, we try and stock products made by people who I guess are like us.” Lisa Shearon

RAISING THE COLOUR

Picture: iStockphoto.com/Petegar

The traditional style of having a single-colour mass planting of individual species is giving way to the mass planting of different flowering types in a multitude of colours

T

HE most exciting thing to happen in gardening in years has been the re-emergence of colour plants in home gardens. After years of surviving with strappy-leaf foliage plants, home gardens are being transformed with the new popularity of colour plants. Old-fashioned annuals will lead the way in their new and improved forms. Perennial favourites such as geraniums and impatiens have undergone massive breeding programs to make them bigger, more colourful, hardier and more adaptable to our climatic extremes. The way they are being used is a little different, too, and I want to share something I learnt from the North Americans when it comes to the way you use them in a garden. Designers are dropping the traditional singlecolour mass planting of individual species or varieties and mass planting mixes of different sizes and coloured plants in large, open beds. I’ve set up a few garden beds at home using this philosophy and they are now a classic example of the new colour explosion trend I’m talking about. I’ve randomly laid out a mass planting of flowering plants in different colours, sizes and shapes with spectacular effect.

The garden features three different types of petunia, mainly used around the outside edge of the garden to create a frame for the other varieties used inside. Annual blue lobelias are low-growing, filling in gaps between larger flowering plants and providing masses of blue flowers while the asters arrive later than the rest with stunning straw-like blooms in shades of mauve and blue. Snapdragons are a pretty flower produced on long spikes where the flowers open progressively from the base to the top. They come in colours ranging from white, pink and red through to deep purples. They look sensational when planted alongside foxgloves. Growing to heights of 60cm when mature, foxgloves have a great range of colours. The seed, which is toxic and believed to have been the cause of a papal murder, is now being used to help people with heart disease and may have many more medicinal uses in the future. I just think it looks great – which is probably a little bit shallow in the big picture of things! Probably the stars of this colour garden are the dahlias and I’ve used two old favourite varieties scattered across the bed that will flower well into June before dying down and going dormant.

The great thing about dahlias is they are a tuber that re-emerges in spring to put on another stunning colour show. So what is the secret to creating a stunning display like this? Good soil, mulch and an occasional feed with a controlled-release plant food is the basis to any productive garden. In the early stages, liquid feeding with a plant food such as Miracle-Gro MaxFeed does wonders. Establishing a colourful garden is easy and the more frequently you feed your annual flowering plants, the bigger and more impressive the flower display you get. Growing annual flowering plants is so simple to do and if you’re worried about their water consumption – don’t! My gardens were planted during the great spring rains we had, which helped establish them, and they have not only survived but thrived during the very hot start to summer on just three 10mm drinks of bore water a week. The best time to establish these kinds of gardens is when we have plentiful rainfall, but you can also do it successfully if you’re using a bore or recycled water such as greywater systems. Q&A

Are off-lead dog parks good or bad for your dog?

Q A

Teresa Riney, of Ocean Reef, transplanted three sevenyear-old olive trees. One has taken well while the other two are unhappy. Not that long ago I was in Ireland at a garden show called Bloom where the designers used 500-year-old olive trees that had been dug out of the ground in Spain and shipped to Ireland before being placed in giant containers for exhibition in a Mediterranean-style garden in the show. The trick with any transplant is offsetting the root damage done by making sure the roots that survived the transplant have ample moisture and light nutrients to sustain the tree. The trees in this instance will recover slowly, but adding an occasional drench with Seasol, which stimulates new root growth, and some PowerFeed sprayed over the emerging foliage will help the tree no end.

ISITING dog parks can be an enjoyable part of dog ownership. The parks offer the opportunity for regular exercise, socialisation and a convenient outlet for your dog to expend excess energy. But for some dog owners they may not be the wisest choice. A dog park is a community resource, shared by dog owners and non-dog owners alike. The park’s popularity and safety require that users are sensitive to the rights of others and behave in respectful ways.

V

DOGS RUNNING AMOK

Q A

Dog parks may, or may not, be a good option for your pet. They could be doing your dog more harm than good. Here are some pros and cons to consider.

RUDE PEOPLE

Ray Stapledon, via email, has a nectarine tree that failed last year and he wants to know what to do to get a crop this year. Ray, don’t do anything. Particularly do not feed the tree when it’s in flower. The tree will set fruit naturally and doesn’t need any care until you’ve picked your crop. Then, giving it a feed with a complete fertiliser would be a good idea. Trevor Cochrane

SOCIALISATION The parks allow ample opportunities for dogs to to interact with a diverse range of people, as well as other dogs. This helps to increase confidence, social skills and enhances a dog’s ability to cope with new stimuli. On the other hand, dogs that frequent the same park regularly often become territorial towards other dogs that aren’t part of their regular social group. They can become aggressive in guarding what they consider to be their turf and they can also harass passers-by. Moreover, because it is a handy outlet, some dog owners abandon efforts to control or interact with their dog. They make little effort to monitor their pets; instead they allow a pack mentality to develop among the animals.

The Garden Guru to the rescue

For your chance to get the benefit of gardening advice from Trevor Cochrane, tell us in 100 words or less about your garden and its problems. Send an email to housecalls@sundaytimes. newsltd.com.au or write to The Sunday Times, home Editor, GPO Box D174, Perth, WA 6840. Include your full name and address and a daytime phone number. Please do not send any soil samples or plant cuttings. ✱ All readers whose gardening questions are published win a Tempest Deluxe 9 Pattern Nozzle Gun, valued at $5.95, and a copy of The West Australian Garden Guide by Neville Passmore and Trevor Cochrane, valued at $39.95.

REACTIVE DOGS If your dog has restrained manners and isn’t keen on other dogs bounding up to their face to say “Hi”, a busy dog park could prove problematic. Dogs not under their owners’ control can be stressful and annoying to others. Their unwelcome approaches may result in dog fights and arguments between owners that could easily have been prevented. Rude behaviour by dogs takes many forms. Regardless of how friendly a dog may be, a dog repeatedly invading another dog’s space can lead to problems for everyone concerned. Dogs will aggressively defend against unwanted advances.

Picture: iStockphoto.com/VIDOK

ANTI-SOCIAL DOGS Bringing a dog with aggression issues or wild and unruly behaviour to an off-lead dog park is not a sensible step. Often dogs with bully tendencies have a rambunctious play style. This, in combination with their lack of self-control and sociability, can scare the shy and cautious individuals and/or lead to an attack with their menacing behaviour. Dogs have different play styles, but even a robust dog will find such an invasion intimidating. More often than not, this leads to conflict in the park. If your dog has a history of fights, regardless of its size, it’s a bad idea to bring it to the dog park. Instead, seek professional help or find a suitable outlet where your dog won’t put others at risk.

Be aware that dog parks are people parks, too. They are often frequented by young families and the elderly. It may be hard for dog owners to believe, but mothers with babies in prams and toddlers do not always welcome unruly, undisciplined dogs bounding up to them. Imagine young children running amok in public, being allowed to clasp the legs of passers-by, while their parents call out, “He’s friendly – he just wants to say hi!”. There’s no reason to tolerate such behaviour in children. It should not be acceptable for dogs that are not under their owners’ control.

Many owners of “rude and invasive” dogs do not perceive their dog’s actions in that light. They don’t see a problem and are even perplexed that others don’t welcome their dog’s approach. People have a right to their personal space. They have valid reasons when they ask you to control your dog. It is incumbent on owners to do so. As a general rule, dogs don’t like other dogs in their face and space. A dog that feels under attack becomes defensive. It doesn’t want to be chased or to interact with strange dogs. People can feel the same way and be scared of unfamiliar dogs or they may simply just want to enjoy a stress-free walk with their dog. Sadly, when people are asked to call their dog, the response is sometimes unfavourable. It is essential to be responsive to the needs of others and be on the alert to diffuse any problem before it escalates into an unpleasant incident.

LACK OF SUPERVISION Problems arise when people, absorbed in conversation with other park users, pay scant attention to what their dog is up to. Your dog should be priority No.1. You should always know where it is and what it’s doing. Turning a blind eye when your dog goes to the toilet is not how responsible dog owners behave.

UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN Young children often scare or attract a dog’s attention by shouting at them and running away, like prey. The size, quick movements and sporadic actions of small children can trigger a chase response in dogs. This may cause otherwise calm dogs with good temperaments to chase and even nip or bite a child. When small children and dogs share parks, everyone concerned should be keeping a vigilant watch. Responsible dog owners recognise potential problems. They’re aware of the precursor signs that indicate an impending incident and are generally switched on with what is occurring. Parks where dogs are allowed are not the real problem. It is more the dogs’ owners that contribute to dog park problems. Their abrogation of responsibility, lack of control and lax supervision combined with untrained dogs make for a problematic mix. ✱ Check out Kathy’s website at www. kathysdogtraining.com.au for her 2012 Intensive Workshop dates and other seminar announcements.

Perth Scorchers cap It’s the new cricket concept happening right now. I’m really lucky to be involved in it as the coach of the Scorchers. We’re all really excited at the WACA for the Scorchers to become a well-known team around Perth. Cricket bat I played a lot of my Sheffield Shield games with this bat and made my only 100 with it. I also used it in the Shield final for Queensland back in 2005-06. It holds a lot of great memories for me. Wallabies jersey The Wallabies are my favourite sporting team outside of the cricketing world. I make sure I watch every Test match I can, even if it means staying up late or getting up very early. I really enjoy watching them every time they go out on the field. Poster This is my favourite sporting memory, Queensland winning that Shield final against Victoria in 2006. It was such a great team to be part of. I might have only been a minor player, but I got to spend the whole season with the likes of Mitchell Johnson, Shane Watson, Martin Love, Michael Kasprowicz and Ashley Noffke. Photos This was the best gift I received for my 30th birthday. Some kind people put it together for me and it’s just a really nice memory of a lot of old friends coming together for one night. To have those reflections given to me in images was a really lovely gesture.

DVDs The West Wing is my favourite TV show. My university friends introduced me to it and I’ve enjoyed watching it ever since. There are a lot of powerful actors in this show. It also helped me kill time after having a shoulder reconstruction. 7 CD I’m a huge Crowded House fan and Neil and Tim Finn’s They Will Have Their Way has just been re-released by other people singing a compilation of their songs. I really enjoy listening to their work done in different ways. 8 Book Zigzag Street is about a street in the Brisbane suburb of Red Hill. Nick Earls is a very humourous author and tells a very, very clever and witty story. I’ve read it a few times. 9 Painting My parents commissioned an artist to do a watercolour of my high school cricket ground in Toowoomba where I spent so much of my teenage years as a gift for my 18th birthday. This is the only painting I have and I’m very attached to it. 10 Iced Coffee I wouldn’t make it through a day without my iced coffee. All the players will tell you that. They try and hide it from me after training, but I keep hunting for it until I eventually find it.
