Like its successor, the big seller had featured a pool room and a rear activity room surrounded by three minor bedrooms. “The pool room has been a great selling point in the Exhilaration and, if done well, can be a well-used entertaining area in any home,” Adam says. “Incorporating it into the living areas is a vital element of its success.” Capturing the essence of resort living and further proving that first homebuyers don’t have to make do with boring and basic, the master suite in the Exhilaration has also been a big hit. Shannon’s tip of the week
I seem to have a bad case of silverfish in my house, Q particularly in the bedrooms. What can I do to get rid of them? The carpets are quite old. Also, how can I store my raw silk, white wedding dress? I read somewhere that clothes should be stored in containers with holes in them to keep the air flowing. I have mine in those clear plastic containers. And how can I prevent my stored, washed baby clothes from going yellow in parts. I have soaked the baby clothes and hung them out on the line to dry but the yellow stains don’t seem to disappear. Could this have been caused from breast milk?

Umbrellas are best left upright so they don’t hoard bugs. If they are stored on their side, keep them wrapped in a cover. To clean canvas umbrellas, put two cups of table salt or swimming pool salt in a small bucket of water and apply to the canvas with a brush or stiff broom. Allow it to dry, then brush the salt off with a stiff broom. Hammocks can be cleaned in exactly the same way. If there’s mildew on the canvas, here’s how to clean it off. Add a kilogram of table salt per bucket of water. Sweep it on with a broom, leave it to dry and then sweep it off with a stiff broom. Rinse with water, adding a couple of drops of oil of cloves to inhibit mould.

along the skirting board of each room. Place a whole clove per shelf in your cupboards and five whole cloves in each hanging section of your wardrobe. This will prevent the breeding cycle and acts as a repellent. If you have a really bad infestation, it’s a good idea to place a quarter of a teaspoon of oil of cloves into a litre of water in a spray bottle and lightly mist it over your carpet. Don’t be tempted to soak the carpet, just mist – more isn’t better. You can also spray a little of the mixture on a cloth and wipe down your shelves and cupboards. The best way to store your white silk wedding gown is to fold it into an acid-free box using acid-free paper, which is available where you can buy conservation materials, such as at a picture framer. Don’t be tempted to place it in plastic as the plastic will fume and leave marks on the silk. The yellow mark on your baby’s clothes can indeed be caused by breast milk and every other variety of milk for that matter. Soaking the stains out with a commercial soaker has actually set those stains. To remove them, wipe over each of the stains with a small amount of glycerine and leave them for about an hour and a half. Next, take a cake of soap from the bathroom – not laundry soap – and rub the stains out with the soap and cold water. Storage for baby clothes is easy – just take an old pillowcase and boil it. Dry the pillowcase thoroughly in the sunshine and place your baby’s clothes inside it.

Make a paste with one part glycerine and one part talcum powder until it is the consistency of spreadable butter. Put a small amount onto a rolled-up pair of pantyhose and polish in gentle circles and continue until the marks have gone. To prevent the problem recurring, paint the tyres on the skateboard with a strong salt solution, made from 2 cups of salt in 6 cups of water, and leave it outside overnight. Brush the dried salt off the rubber in the morning. This also helps slow the perishing of the rubber, allowing the tyres to last longer.

I need to know what the stain is made of; what surface it’s on (Is there a varnish? What is the topmost surface that the stain is affecting?); and what, if anything, you’ve already tried to remove it. Each thing you try changes the chemical composition of the stain. Our son has a huge electric skateboard Q that he uses on bitumen. The other day, he charged the batteries up in the activity room, which gets early morning sun, and left it sitting on a new vinyl floor for a couple of days before he took it outside again. After that, we discovered four tyre mark stains that look as if they are burnt into the vinyl floor (see photo). We tried to clean it with white vinegarr and bicarb without any success. Before trying otherr things, and perhaps making the stains worse, we thought we’d ask for your advice.

OR most West Australians, a home loan is one of the largest financial commitments they’ll ever make. While there is generally a considerable amount of research that goes into choosing the right lender and home loan product initially, most borrowers then simply fall into the habit of making the monthly repayments. But given the size of the financial commitment, it’s important for mortgagees to avoid the “set and forget” trap. Indeed, a regular home loan review or tune-up should be on everybody’s agenda and the beginning of the new financial year is the perfect time to kickstart the process.

Is it just a case of finding a home loan with the most competitive interest rate, or are there other things I should be looking for? When reviewing your home loan, don’t just focus on the interest rate. Make sure you consider other benefits that may be available to you from your chosen lender. For example, most of us use credit cards, which are an expensive form of credit. However, some lenders provide credit cards at home loan rates if you have your home loan with them. It’s important that additional benefits such as these are taken into account when reviewing your current position, because they can make a big difference to your overall financial position.

Should I just go to a bank to find out options for my mortgage or is it worth finding a mortgage broker? An accredited mortgage broker can help to cut through the maze of loans. He or she has the ability to review your current position, understand your future objectives and subsequently make a recommendation based upon your individual circumstances. Having a reputable mortgage broker on your side is also invaluable as you move from the position of purchasing your first home through to your second and subsequent properties, as well as any future investment properties. In addition, they can be worth their weight in gold when it comes to regular home loan reviews and check-ups.

Should I just speak to the four big banks about a home loan? Be prepared to consider home loan options that are outside of the mainstream lenders.
The reality is that with more and more lenders moving independently of the Reserve Bank, competition is alive and well. In addition to the major banks, there are many second-tier lenders and mortgage managers who can offer a great package of benefits.

What is equity and how can I use it? When reviewing your current financial position, you may find that you have accumulated equity in your home. Put simply, equity is the difference between what you owe and how much your property is worth. This can be a valuable asset if and when you consider purchasing an investment, or alternatively, if you start to look at the options for renovating your current home.

PEN-PLAN living certainly suits the modern lifestyle but sometimes we crave spaces that feel a little more intimate. Commodore Homes has combined the best of both worlds in the Laguna, a family-friendly, four-bedroom home on display in Trinity at Alkimos. With windows on three sides, it’s a great compromise between the formal dining rooms of old and the casual meals areas often favoured today. “Separating the dining room from the living space gives you the option of hosting
a dinner party in the dining room while the kids can entertain themselves nearby in either the home theatre, web zone or living area,â€? Anthony says. According to Anthony, the feedback from buyers has been great, with visitors applauding the “open yet privateâ€? feel of the everyday living spaces. “Giving each of the spaces in the Laguna their own privacy allows the home to keep the feeling of spaciousness, while offering family members different spaces to entertain or relax in without interruption,â€? he says. For snacks, drinks and quick coffee catchups, the kitchen features an elevated section of benchtop that has been placed at right angles to the island bench to create a dedicated breakfast bar. A dropped ceiling adds further deďŹ nition to the kitchen, which also features 900mm appliances, including a curved glass and stainless steel range hood. Anthony says the brief for the Laguna was to provide chic, family-orientated spaces combined with the functionality that “everyone ultimately needs in a homeâ€?. Perfect for buyers who need extra space for teenagers or guests, it has a sizeable second bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe.
There are two more minor bedrooms, each with built-in storage, plus a large, light and airy master suite. “The master bedroom isn’t just a bedroom – it’s a place where parents can retreat to at the end of the day,â€? Anthony says. Reecting the idea of indulgence and relaxation, the designers have given the ensuite

IDS are staying at home longer these days so it’s little wonder that parents are favouring designs that give everyone their own space. APG has responded to the trend with a dedicated kids’ living room in its latest single-storey display home, the Mirander. Just opened in Wandi, the Mirander includes a big second lounge and a computer zone that have been melded together to create what APG is calling an “activity suite” in the minor bedroom wing. “The area has been a winner, with the ability to have a study area off to the side for a level of privacy if required, yet still be in touch with the activity zone,” says Leo Callisto, sales and marketing manager at APG. “This eliminates the need for a separate room altogether.” The builder’s design and decor experts have highlighted the concept by setting up the lounge area with a TV and an extra deep and squashy sofa to create the perfect chill-out zone. Set into a wide recess, the computer space features a built-in desk big enough for two computer workstations, plus chunky open shelves for books and photos. There’s also a family bathroom and three generous double bedrooms with double-door built-in wardrobes, completing a separate

wing where younger members of the family can really enjoy a sense of independence away from the main living areas. “The brief for the Mirander was to create a home that had a designated kids’ wing and a large open-plan living area with plenty of room for entertaining,” Leo says. Leading out to a rear alfresco that has been fitted with a built-in barbecue and sink, the living and dining area is filled with natural light thanks to considered orientation and plenty of glazing. The house has been built on a corner block and the builder has used this to great effect, adding sliding doors from the dining room to a side courtyard. A galley-style kitchen, which overlooks the everyday area, leads through to a sizeable larder. This new-style pantry has been kitted out with lots of cupboards, a second sink, open shelves, plenty of stone bench top and room to keep essential appliances and gadgets. A window keeps the larder light and well ventilated, while a space-saving cavity door means this preparation and storage area can quickly and easily be hidden from view, leaving the contemporary kitchen clutter-free when visitors drop in. “The kitchen relates to all the entertaining areas with a visual across the dining room,
living room and alfresco,” Leo says. “This allows everyone to feel connected even though some guests may be outside.” The laundry has been positioned at the opposite end of the kitchen to the larder. It’s separate but still very much part of the key utility zone. Placing the master suite at the front of the house has enabled APG to add sliding doors to a veranda that’s perfect for catching up with the neighbours or simply watching the world go by. There’s a fitted wardrobe that stretches the length of one wall and a chic ensuite with double vanities and a double-sized shower. Designed for a 15m-wide block but easily adapted to suit a range of block sizes, the Mirander reflects the design philosophy that APG applies to its award-winning doublestorey displays. “It’s just another example of how we have taken all the design principles around space, proportion and functionality and applied them to single-storey designs,” Leo says. “The disciplines don’t change.” APG has also drawn up plans for a more cost-conscious version of the home, called the Ruby, that can be built for approximately $70,000 less than the high-spec display model. Attention should be paid to air quality in the home given that we spend an estimated 90 per cent of our time indoors, says Master Builders director of communications Geoff Cooper

I
NDOOR air quality is something to consider when you build or renovate. It is also important to think about it during this time of the year as we move into the cooler months and we are tempted to seal up our homes to retain warmth. In particular, it is worth considering indoor air quality where children, the elderly or the sick are involved, as they are likely to be more vulnerable to toxins. There are several threats to good indoor air quality. One threat is volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are chemicals that evaporate into the atmosphere at room temperature. They often have an odour and are present in a wide range of household products, construction materials and furnishings. These include paints, manufactured wood products, adhesives, cleaning agents and flooring. Low emissions from large surface areas can result in high total emissions, for example from painted walls and carpets. Warmer temperatures and humidity can increase the rate of emissions. Materials that harbour allergens can also cause health problems, such as carpets hiding dust mites. Emissions from gas heaters, cooking and wood stoves can also detract from indoor air quality. Lead can also be present in older homes, and is mostly found in old paints, flashings and PVC. The health impacts resulting from exposure
to individual chemical substances in building materials are not well understood, but caution seems warranted. The good news is that there is plenty you can do to improve indoor air quality.
First, eliminate the causes of indoor air pollution. There is much you can do to reduce VOCs: ✱ Choose low-VOC or VOC-free materials and
finishes, such as paints, carpets and cleaners ✱ Ask whether your builder or painter can source
water-based, low-VOC adhesives and paints ✱ Use products that don’t require a finishing
product
✱ Ensure that you have adequate ventilation
around your fridge ✱ Avoid gluing timber floors where possible ✱ Choose natural oils and waxes in preference
to solvent-based or synthetic sealers
B
UILDING a two-storey home can give you greater flexibility and added design options with the introduction of voids, staircases and balconies. The results can be magical, but there is a need to find a balance between form and function. Increasingly, modern designs have meant wrought-iron, timber and concrete barriers making way for glass balustrades and floating staircases. And while they are often visually stunning, just how safe are they? The Building Code of Australia has minimum standards for stair and balustrade construction, where the height between levels is greater than 1m. Stairs must fall within a regulated slope gradient, and have minimum and maximum tread dimensions and heights. Balustrades must be a minimum height of
a metre from the finished floor level and not allow the passage of a 125mm diameter sphere through any part. Having said this, a balcony can have a climbable balustrade if the height of the drop is less than 4m. This might meet the minimum standard, but is not likely to safeguard a child from a fall that could result in injury or, worse still, death. There is also a new requirement, introduced into the Building Code from May 1 this year, for a handrail to be installed on at least one side of a stairway. This means you may need to widen your stairway to allow for the extra space it takes up, but will no doubt improve safety for all users. The BCA does not require minimum illumination in stairways of residential buildings but
considering stairs are a common site for accidents in the home, it is wise to incorporate this area into the equation when finalising your home’s lighting options. You will also need to consider where to locate switches for stairway lighting and the level of illumination you may need. Reflective finishes such as high-gloss timber, stone and tiles can also make it difficult to see the individual treads. A contrasting edge to the step improves the safety of the stairs without necessarily changing the visual impact of the structure. For existing homeowners, it is wise to consider the installation of new handrails or balustrades in your current home as well as in areas where there is a change in level less than 1m. Ultimately, your home needs to be as functional as it is beautiful.
Should I use a building designer or an architect to draw up my building plans? I want to build a “green” home. This is an interesting question. If you are building with a major project builder, this is a non-issue because these builders generally have an in-house design team to draw up your building plans as a service to the client. However, ownership of the plans will remain with the builder, and you will be locked in to that builder if you wish to use that design. For one-off designs the choice can be a difficult one. It has been suggested that architects are more innovative and creative, particularly when designing a “sustainable” or environmental home. However, I know a number of building designers who are extremely creative when given a specific project brief. Many builders regard designers and draftpersons as more practical and better able to design house plans to a budget. Creativity and innovation can – although not always – result in higher building costs. Architects often offer the added service of overall project management and supervision, which is not generally available through designers. Smaller builders often engage a draftsperson who can produce drawings to comply with the Building Code of Australia. This draftsperson will usually know the builder’s requirements and design the building in line with the builder’s and the client’s needs. However, if you wish to draw up a set of plans that will be “hawked around” seeking the lowest price, a fully detailed and architecturally specified design may be best to ensure that your quotes are meaningful and that you are comparing apples with apples. Cost and ownership of the plans are also considerations. Architectural fees are expensive, but you have the advantage of owning the building plans on which you can invite any builder to submit a price. Use of a project builder’s in-house design team will mean that ownership of the plans remains with the builder. In any event, most builders will not price another builder’s plans for fear of becoming involved in a breach of copyright dispute.

Next, make sure when you decide to build a home or undertake a renovation that you make the best use of natural ventilation, minimise moisture and ensure that there is a sealable door between the garage and the rest of the home. Where possible, exhaust cooking fumes outside. Also, ensure that you regularly vacuum your carpets and air your rooms, even during winter. You may also want to grow indoor plants, which help absorb pollutants. Research from Sydney’s University of Technology has shown that indoor plants can remove VOCs from the air. Some types of plant are more effective than others. Enjoy the comforts of your home and protect your health by addressing indoor air quality this winter.

F the prospect of a long, dreary winter fills you with dread, take heart in the predictions of Australia’s top interior design experts. According to those following European trends, this coming season is all about brightening up your home with bold colours when the weather is grey outside. “After three years of post-GFC Milan shows, many Italian manufacturers bit the bullet and launched oceans of colour at an expectant design cognoscenti,” says Andrew Thornton Hick, commercial manager at Ultimo Interiors, reporting on the 2012 Milan Furniture Fair. “Multi-layered palettes of colour, vibrant textures and juxtapositions of acid colours with muted neutrals set the stage. “Moving on from the last two years of aqua, teal, turquoise and coffee-tone neutrals, this year saw bottle green, safari, olive, honeysuckle and caramel tones sweep the palette.” According to Contempo’s Lillie Bull, if the Milan Furniture Fair is anything to go by, then clean and minimal design is on its way out, set to be replaced by softer furnishings with plenty of colour.

“This year’s colour trends were a sea of blue and pale green,” Lillie says. “Softer furnishings with a move towards oversized loose cushions, as well as side chairs with wooden legs and upholstered seats, are definitely an emerging trend.” After visiting Europe, Retreat Design’s Steve Johnson believes that there will be several shifts in designs and finishes for both kitchens and bathrooms in 2012. “At Euro Cucina Milan 2012, one of the standout design trends for kitchens and bathrooms was the simplification of texture and colour palettes, with a heavy focus back on white cabinetry,” Steve says. “On trend is the use of matt white cabinetry with wood features to create pop. “Finishes being used to complement the use of white include wood veneer, cement and acrylic. “There is a move away from gloss. Instead, matt lacquer is the trending kitchen and bathroom door finish.” Paco Jaanson Australia director Ari Zorlu agrees.
“Colours are definitely coming in more and more for 2012,” Ari says. “Key looks that are emerging for the Australian bathroom are a use of groovy colours such as your reds, greens and blues. “These looks are very ‘out there’ and interior designers are using them to make a statement particularly for the coming season in Australia.” Lisa Shearon

“The open-plan living area opens to the alfresco/pool area and gives the house more of a flow from front to back,” Steve says. “It still keeps the classic design of a Subiaco heritage home from the outside but is very modern inside.” But the transformation of this classic dwelling does not end there. An extra study and bedroom as well as a double lock-up garage was added to the existing home. “In addition, we changed the existing ensuite and created a walk-in robe, and also added a laundry and powder room at the rear in keeping with its original style,” Steve says. High skirtings, ornate ceiling and centrepieces, along with timber-framed double-hung windows, timber doors, jarrah floorboards and 4m ceilings, are just some of the classic features that were enhanced to bring the home up-to-date. The front of the house was also renovated to give it more pleasing street appeal. A reasonably neutral colour palette was used to allow the historic elements, such as the intricate ceilings and moulded cornices, to make a statement. According to Steve, the owners had a lot of input along the way and were very happy with the end result – a well-designed family home that boasts a seamless transition between the old and the new. INSPIRED BEAUTY Sonia and Bernard Gillis were so captivated by a display home created by Ross Griffin Homes designer Yaros Gilenko that they wanted the same team to build their Port Coogee residence

APTURING sea views was a top priority when Ross Griffin Homes drew up plans for this coastal beauty in Port Coogee. Owners Bernard and Sonia Gillis had lived in an upside-down home before, so they were more than happy to put the kitchen and living area on the first floor to secure their ocean outlook. “We wanted to take full advantage of the views and keep as much backyard as possible,” says Sonia. “We were very comfortable with the upside-down layout after having already lived with it.” They’d done their homework before signing up for their 327sq m block, working out exactly what views they could expect to retain and how to make the best of them. Armed with a scrapbook of photos and ideas, the couple then teamed up with Ross Griffin Homes and designer Yaros Gilenko after being inspired by one of the builder’s former display homes – the Space in South Beach that had a courtyard-style pool. “We were so impressed with what Yaros had done with that design,” Sonia says. “He really understood what we were after and he totally believed in the upside-down concept.” Bernard says past experience had shown that the design of the staircase was crucial to getting the all-important connectivity between
the upper and lower floors of their new family home. “In our previous upside-down house we almost didn’t use downstairs. We lived upstairs,” he says. As a result, Bernard had very firm ideas about the design of the staircase and worked closely with Yaros to get it spot-on. The result is a substantial open-tread staircase that is as much a sculptural piece as it is a necessity. The oversized treads are all deliberately thick and long for a heightened sense of strength and substance, and the structure appears to rise from the edge of the pool directly up to the first floor. Considered design and lots of glass means sons, William, 10, and Aidan, 8, can be in the pool, in the downstairs lounge room or out playing cricket in the north-facing backyard while still being very connected to the upstairs living and entertaining areas. Sitting close to the house, the pool is a key feature and can be viewed from several rooms, both upstairs and down. The boys’ bedrooms are downstairs, along with a guest bedroom and a kitchenette in the sitting room. Upstairs is about everyday family living and entertaining set against a backdrop of passing traffic that includes kite surfers, paddle
boarders, boats, dolphins and even the odd sealion. Double sliding doors can be opened to join the living area to balconies on either side of the living space. “We just have to open the sliding doors up a little bit and we get this natural airconditioner,” Sonia says. Sonia, who has a degree in textile design, brought her eye for colour and texture to the interiors. “We chose colours that complemented the view,” she says. The subtle, ocean-inspired colour palette is carried throughout the house for a casual elegance. Rooms are flooded with natural light and there are high, coffered ceilings, a floating bulkhead in the kitchen, oversized doors, plantation-style shutters, brushbox timber floors, low-maintenance Italian porcelain tiles and a floating vanity unit, round basins and loads of storage in the ensuite. CLASSIC CRAFTSMANSHIP Unhappy with what several architects had to offer, the owners of this Mosman Park property turned to Giorgi Exclusive Homes to get maximum use of the great location, and after viewing plans and 3D presentations knew it was exactly what they wanted

UXURIOUS and majestic, this Mosman Park home with its limitless views is a masterpiece in architectural creativity. Designed and built by Giorgi Exclusive Homes, the three-storey residence makes a huge impact with its expansive spaces the moment you enter. The home sits on two blocks, with a full-size tennis court to one side of the property, and boasts jaw-dropping views over the Swan River and a golf course just across the street. The owners, who had previously worked with other architects but were dissatisfied with the process, wanted to maximise the potential the property had to offer. “Once our clients saw the plans and the 3D drawings we presented to them, their fears were immediately eased,” says Giorgi Exclusive Homes managing director Claude Giorgi. “Although it’s a large home, there are framed views and points of interest everywhere.” Designed by award-winning Giorgi Exclusive Homes architect Mark Rietveld, the construction showcases the use of natural materials,

including the abundant application of rock, granite, aluminium and cedar throughout. Coloured, textured renders and a stainless steel sculpture at the front blend perfectly to give the elevation a streamlined and contemporary feel. The facade is also impressive with an almost full-width glass wall distributed over two levels. The clever design hides some of the “green” initiatives such as solar-power panels on the roof, as well as rainwater and greywater storage systems under the garage, and in-floor hydronic heating for the cooler months. The distinct lines of the dwelling are complemented by having sections of the roof angled to comply with height restrictions but appear to be more creative than compulsory. “The entry is overwhelmingly beautiful with its soaring ceiling, and continues to the gallery on the right,” says Claude. “The gallery wall behind the glass front features a white polished plaster, creating the perfect, neutral backdrop for the owner’s love of artwork.”
Beyond the front door, the house evolves into well-orchestrated family quarters made for entertaining. The ground level includes a television room and powder room to the right of the gallery, and continues with a square pond containing a planter. A lift connects the four-bedroom, six-bathroom living space and matching pivot doors on either side of the lift shaft lead to the open dining, lounge and kitchen area. “The kitchen, as you would expect of a home of this calibre, has a separate larder area and dry store, both of which are concealed from view to make sure the kitchen continues to look as clean as possible at all times,” says Claude. Upstairs, the private balcony in the master bedroom and corner windows in the music and sitting room capture more of the stunning river views without obstruction. But the relationship with the outdoors does not stop there. Downstairs, the inside and outside dining and lounge areas are separated
by full-length sliding doors that can be opened to seamlessly link the two spaces. “In addition, a series of steps and large planters guide players down to the tennis court and the deck and lounge areas surrounding the pool,” Claude says. “The pool and infinity-edge spa are where the full extent of the river views come into play.” With passing traffic consisting of boats and jetskis, the home and its fantastic location complement each other exceptionally well. “There is a unique, diverse community around Waterford Plaza and we have become a valued part of that. “I never thought I would be thanked for opening a gift shop but that happens all the time.” Nerida also supports a different local charity every two months through donations received from their giftwrapping services. “Our current total for money raised is now in excess of $11,500,” she says proudly. SPRING INTO ACTION NOW We may have just welcomed winter, but the steps you take now can have a huge impact on your backyard come spring
I
T may seem a little mad that I am suggesting you start thinking about spring right now but if you do you’re very likely to have an amazing display come September. I am currently visiting some gardens in the northern hemisphere and they really struck me. In Canada, there are so many trees and flowering shrubs that if added to your garden now would look great by spring. The early flowerers such as wisteria are amazing there and winter is the best time to get these plants and add them to your garden. Once established, they are almost indestructible and tolerate long, dry periods really well. In fact, our dry season stress in late autumn stimulates stunning flower shows in most forms, particularly the very hardy and easy to find Chinese wisteria. One plant that does grow well in Perth if protected from winds is the tulip magnolia and the new forms such as black tulip make amazing feature plants. The trick with these stunning small trees, which come from the world’s most threatened family of plants, is to grow them in rich organic soil, protect them from winds and never let them dry out. The huge flowers are well worth finding the right spot for, and then early spring will become a time you will always look forward to. Azaleas are often associated with failure in
Perth although a quick visit to a suburb such as Leeming demonstrates they will grow – and in full sun – for most varieties. Again, rich soil and good irrigation make the world of difference in results so getting these aspects right at the beginning is important. The foliage burst on deciduous trees in spring is a massively understated area of a garden’s beauty. These trees are not only a fabulous asset to the garden; they can also help stablise your home’s energy use as well when grown in the right areas. There are a large number of trees that are great for our environment and buying them now can save a fortune if you can pick them up as deciduous plants. Golden elms, golden ash and claret ash make stunning starters. If you want waterwise, hardy deciduous trees but are not sure what to get, seeking out ornamental pear trees and crab apples is a good way to go. Capital pear is still one of the best and some varieties are going to provide spring colour as well, such as the stunning snow pear – a tree massively understated for its all-round beauty as an ornamental. This tree is smothered in snow-white, soft flowers in spring and its light green foliage is a terrific foil against deeper greens and colour contrasts in the summer. Of course, the winter sees foliage turn coppery before falling and then the natural light of winter days gets to reach the soil, just in time for bulbs such as daffolils, jonquils and freesia to raise their brilliant flowers brightening the darkest of winter days. The decisions you make about your garden now can have a huge impact this spring so a quick trip to the garden centre, a study of the plant labels and an eye for a bargain could see this spring become the best ever in your backyard. Brendan Valente, of Mount Pleasant, has a dwarf nectarine tree that is the size of a gym fitness ball. It fruited very well this season, but the overall size of the ripe fruit was still quite small. He wants to know what he can do to get bigger fruit. The most likely issue is the amount of fruit it held. That is your fruit size limiting factor and if you are determined to have larger fruit, reducing the numbers soon after fruit set by about 50 per cent will have significant impact on fruit size come harvest time. beautiful picture of Mum on her big day. This time/era and her life prechildren really intrigue me. Such hope, love and anticipation for the day – and what the future would bring. 3 View-Master This is my favourite toy ever. It blew my mind as a child and continues to blow my mind as an adult. It is my niece’s favourite thing to marvel at when she visits. 4 1950s tea set I inherited this from my great-aunt. Sipping on good tea is one of my favourite relaxing pastimes, especially when it’s with a few “closies” and from such a gorgeous and fine little set like this. I imagine my aunt and her friends solving all of life’s little problems around this tea set. 5 Clarinet My aunt originally bought this from an antique store way back when, while on a teaching assignment in Geraldton. She bestowed it upon me when I began taking lessons during my final year of primary school. It is a fine wood instrument – a Selmer, to be exact – and it is heavenly to play.

soundtrack – enough said. I’m a mad bookworm – reading is an addiction. One of my favourite novels, White Teeth, a debut book by Zadie Smith, is an incredibly good read. It’s quirky, sassy and extremely funny.
photographer, my “Da” was often poised and ready with camera in hand to capture almost every moment of our childhood. I was lucky enough to have this collection handed down to me. The only downfall, however, is it’s hard to find film for these relics. 9

Vegie and herb garden I love nothing more than to pick my own produce from my own backyard. The plot has been re-sowed for the winter and I so look forward to reaping the goodness. Garden time is therapeutic and so very Zen.
10 Handpainted vase This charming vase was a gift from my future in-laws for my last birthday. It is said to be from the late 1800s. I just adore it.
