HE Leederville by Plunkett Homes has a wide contemporary frontage that gives no hint of its small-lot status. Ceilings are high to add volume and a bulkhead has been added over the kitchen where wide, stainless steel appliances combine with overhead cupboards, stone benchtops and a neutral colour palette for comfortable chic. With a view to keeping hardworking utility areas together, the Plunkett design team has positioned the laundry off the kitchen. A second set of stacker doors off the dining room opens to an elevated timber-decked terrace, perfect for watching the comings and goings in the street.

Using a fireplace recess to separate the dining room from the living room creates a welcoming feature without eating into space. Completing the first floor layout are a powder room, a walk-in linen cupboard and a spacious foyer with double entry doors. Mindful that small lots usually offer little space to store items such as bikes and gardening equipment, the Leederville includes a sizeable store off the garage. About a third of the upper floor has been dedicated to the master bedroom with its sliding door to the balcony. There’s ample room to set up a retreat with a reading chair or two as part of the bedroom, which also includes a walk-in wardrobe, a recess for a dressing table and an ensuite with twin vanities and shower. “The main bedroom enjoys views towards the city and makes the most of the width of the block,” Jeremy says. Q&A Shannon’s tip of the week Some plastic furniture is really well designed for outdoor use. As a rule, the darker the furniture, the less likely it will be affected by UV. When choosing plastic outdoor furniture, take the heaviest member of your family with you and have them sit in the chair. They need to feel comfortable in it. It’s best not to store plastic furniture outside because it breaks down in the sun. Keep spiders away from the underside of your outdoor furniture by occasionally wiping a couple of drops of lemon oil underneath your tables and chairs.

How do you clean a latex pillow? Can bed bugs still get into the latex? There has been a lot of talk about pillows on the TV lately saying you should throw your pillows out every so often. Latex pillows are too expensive to be replaced regularly.

I am so glad you mentioned this. A One of the reasons that people have been talking about throwing pillows out is that a lot of them do not wash their pillows anymore – eek! It is necessary to wash your pillows regularly. I use a pillow protector as well. It’s like a mattress cover, but designed for pillows. All of the pillows in my home get washed at least once every three months. Latex pillows are easy to wash. Simply place them in the washing machine – end to end around the drum – so that they can’t move about when the machine starts to agitate (so you will need to wash several pillows at once). Instead of using washing powder, use a couple of caps of very cheap hair shampoo (the cheaper the better as it doesn’t contain so many fruit oils) and turn the machine on to a gentle cycle with a warm wash and warm rinse or cold wash and a cold rinse. It is important that the water

To dry your pillows, place a towel across the top of your clothes lines and peg it in place, forming a table. Lay the pillows on top of the towel to allow them to dry and turn them occasionally. This approach means they won’t compress and will dry evenly and stay fluffy.

Can you please tell me what I can use to clean my vinylwrap kitchen cupboards without scouring them? I used Jiff once, but am worried this will wear the vinyl off. Being in the kitchen, they do get a slightly greasy film on them. Any advice is appreciated.

I have vinyl-wrap cupboards A in my kitchen and I use a very simple solution. Put one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and one teaspoon of lavender oil into a litre of water and use it to fill a spray bottle. Lightly spray your cupboards with the solution. Then use a pair of pantyhose (rolled up into a soft ball) to wipe over your cupboards. It cuts through grease and is antibacterial. You’ll also be surprised how fast it is. If you prefer, you can just use white vinegar to clean them down, but I find my solution faster and more fragrant.

I need to know what the stain is made of; what surface it’s on (Is there a varnish? What is the topmost surface that the stain is affecting?); and what, if anything, you’ve already tried to remove it. Each thing you try changes the chemical composition of the stain. Include a photograph if you can. Photographs really help the stain diagnosis. Don’t forget, alternative recycling questions are also welcome.

well received,” Cameron says. “You’re basically doubling the width of the opening.” Having two outdoor areas or a double-sized outdoor area is also becoming more of a musthave for buyers. “In the Homestead, there’s one area where you might cook and have a meal, and another where you might just relax on the couch,” Cameron says. There are ideas aplenty in the kitchen, too. Here an open larder-style area, with cabinets, shelves, worktop and fridge/freezer recess, forms an extension to the main part of the kitchen. “I think there’s a call for a bit more storage and space so that people can leave the main part of the kitchen free of appliances and other bits,” Cameron says. It’s a great way to minimise clutter. Funky gadgets can be put on display while everything else is stashed discreetly behind doors. Glassfronted overhead cupboards, a stone-topped island bench and lots of drawers complete the two-tone kitchen design, while the adjoining laundry acts as a seamless extension.

The Homestead, which can be built from $220,889, may be a showcase of inspirational ideas and up-to-the-minute features, but many buyers have been drawn to this home simply because they love its zoning. “The zoning is quite deliberate, with the master suite, sunken home theatre and office all at one end of the house,” Cameron says. “The minor bedrooms and the kids’ activity area are at the opposite end of the home, then you’ve got all your open-plan space in the middle so that everyone can come together.” An extra-high, extra-wide door leads through to the master suite, emphasising the generous proportions of this hotel-inspired bedroom space with its twin walk-in wardrobes. Features such as the double-sized hob-free showers, fitted wardrobes, high ceilings, frameless shower screens, “white kote” glass sliding doors to the linen cupboard, a pull-out clothes basket in the laundry and a double pull-out bin in the kitchen ensure there’s little buyers need to add to the Homestead’s specification. OMBINING the timeless look of limestone with face brick and a white-painted veranda, the Homestead by Dale Alcock Homes extends a warm holiday welcome. “The key brief for the Homestead was to provide a home that fitted into the Swan Valley nicely, hence the more colonial-style elevation,” says Cameron Lade, sales and marketing manager at Dale Alcock Homes. The veranda was an essential feature for the builder, acknowledging a move towards more neighbourly estates. “A lot of developers want that sense of community within their estates and they encourage verandas so that people can sit out the front,” Cameron says. “It gives you an opportunity to socialise with the neighbours and I think that’s something that is really quite valid.” The feature elevation wraps around two sides of the house to address both street frontages, while the floor plan works with the corner location to create maximum outdoor living space. Based on the builder’s popular blueprint the Ambrose, which used to be on display in Southern River, the Homestead has a tried and tested layout that flows well and really works, according to Cameron. As well as providing the alfresco to the rear, the Dale Alcock design team has added stacker doors to the side of the living area in the display home. These lead to a second outdoor living and entertaining space beneath an optional pergola. ITH its extended alfresco, separate sun deck and private courtyard, the Eclipse by Aussie Living Homes recognises that outdoor living is here to stay. The builder has had lots of fun making full use of the backyard in this Alkimos display, even setting up a mini basketball court for the kids. Anthony Oldershaw, brand manager at Aussie Living Homes, says it’s not just the internal spaces in the home that illustrate well-thought-out zoning. “As well as a great alfresco and internal zoning, the Eclipse has a well-zoned garden, too,” he says. The design team have even created a garden bed with a raised entertaining podium that Anthony says could be used as a dance ﬂoor. It would be a simple change to add a door from the activity room to the basketball court, while the master suite can easily be opened into a private courtyard. “The relaxed lifestyle that we live and the ability to put up cafe-style blinds can give the outdoor feeling all year round,” Anthony says. He says the brief for the Eclipse was to design a four-bedroom family home that had wellzoned areas for parents, kids, indoor and outdoor entertaining, and everyday living. Wrapping the family and meals area around the alfresco makes both rooms feel connected to this key outdoor space. “The day-to-day living zone relates beautifully to the outdoor alfresco and garden area, giving the home a great feeling of space but with a practical layout,” Anthony says. Anchoring the design of the Eclipse is a central kitchen featuring overhead cupboards, stainless steel appliances, a recess for the fridge/ freezer and a breakfast bar built into the island bench. “Central kitchens are a great design feature in modern homes,” Anthony says. “They work particularly well as a central hub and also ensure that we can then separate the meals, living and alfresco areas so that they are not thoroughfares in the home.” Adding a built-in unit that doubles as a bar

in the dining room helps unify the spaces even further. Grouping the home theatre and main bedroom together at the front of the home has delivered a parents’ wing with its own entertaining space. The layout not only increases the sense of space in the entry hallway, where there is room for a console table on which to drop keys and mobile phones, but it also creates a foyer leading past the home theatre – or second sitting room – to the main bedroom. An open-style ensuite and big windows contribute to the sophisticated hotel-inspired presentation in the master suite. Fitting comfortably on to a 15m-wide block, the Eclipse has a warm and welcoming presence from the street. “The front elevation is a modern take on a Balinese bungalow with its clean lines, feature rendered surround to the window and its exposed timber beams,” Anthony says. “The frontage is classical and therefore will not date, but will work towards adding future value to the home when it comes to resale.” Paula Evans

If Australia is the lucky country, then WA more than qualifies as the lucky state, says Master Builders director Michael McLean

HOSE of us who live in WA are pretty clear about why we believe that we live in one of the best places in the world. Our laid-back lifestyle, high standard of living, lack of traffic congestion (except during peak hour), quality beaches and employment prospects regularly top most people’s lists. All these positives have an impact on our psyche and general level of confidence and wellbeing. However, our economy is not immune to the impact of global financial upheavals. Confidence has taken another hit due to the economic problems being experienced in Europe. Despite two interest rate cuts, the lowest unemployment rate in the country and the highest population growth of any state, WA recently recorded its lowest level of building approvals for almost three years – about 30 per cent less than what the housing industry is capable of building in WA. All this is happening at a time when construction levels in the mining/resource sector are breaking new records, accompanied by high

wages (in that sector) and a tighter rental market, hence causing the so-called two-speed economy. Builders are offering many deals on new homes, quality trades are in good supply, and construction periods are excellent. Astute homebuyers and investors are capitalising on the opportunities the current housing market is offering. The renovation sector is doing well as a result of homeowners having difﬁculty in selling their homes at their preferred price. A number of builders and specialist contractors are moving to where the work is, which is in mining communities. This downturn is a great opportunity for the State Government to build more housing for the battlers, disabled and elderly.

The taxpayers’ dollar would certainly get a brilliant return if the Department of Housing were to capitalise on builders’ excess capacity and competitive pricing. So what will it take to provide a boost to the state’s housing industry? A better international economic picture, another reduction in interest rates, fewer regulatory burdens on builders and developers, and more positive media coverage would be helpful. The release of more modest and affordable house-and-land packages for ﬁrst homebuyers will also be a welcome initiative to those wanting to enter the housing industry. WA is the lucky state. We all just need to be reminded of that from time to time and believe in it.

A-Z BUILDING information It is very likely that many old homes have materials containing asbestos, so if you are thinking of renovating, you need to take care, says Master Builders technical adviser Romina De Santis

ESOTHELIOMA is one of a number of asbestos-related diseases resulting from exposure to asbestos ﬁbre through mining, manufacture and the installation of asbestos products. Although the main cause of mesothelioma remains occupational exposure, research in the

past ﬁve years has found that exposure from home renovations/DIY work has accounted for 13 per cent of diagnosed cases. Since its use has been banned, much work has been done to remove old asbestos and replace it with safer alternatives in many buildings and old fencing.

If your home was built prior to 1988, it may contain asbestos products. It is only when these building components are disturbed or damaged that asbestos fibres can be released. If you suspect asbestos is present in your home, refrain from drilling or cutting the material or in any way disturbing the material. If you think asbestos might be present in your home, it is important to note that a visual inspection of a building component cannot determine if it contains asbestos. A laboratory assessment is required to confirm suspicious materials. The most likely materials that may contain asbestos include roofing, fencing, wall cladding, water or flue pipes, textured paints and backing materials on floor tiles and vinyl flooring. When deciding to renovate an old home, consider the possible areas that might include asbestos and have necessary demolition work done by a licensed professional. This ensures the work is done safely, with the material transported from the site and disposed of correctly.

I understand that there are new rules for owner-builders. Can you explain? Yes. Under the new Building Services (Registration) Act there are new, more stringent requirements if you are an owner-builder. Owner-building is a common feature of today’s building market, with about 10 per cent of all new dwellings being constructed this way. The new laws now require owner-builders to obtain a permit from the Building Commission before applying for a building licence with the local authority. Owner-builders will be required to show that they are fit and competent to engage in this activity. This will often mean completion of a course of study that is being developed. Owner-builders will also face tighter restrictions on their ability to circumvent the six-year restriction on engaging in this activity more than once. Under the new Building Act to commence in April, owner-builders will be required to obtain their neighbours’ written consent where their project affects other properties. Owner-builders will have the choice of using a private certifier or the local authority for BCA Certification of Class 1 and 10 buildings. There is also new paperwork to deal with – such as a Notice of Completion, which must be submitted to the permit authority within seven days. Owner-building can be a minefield for inexperienced persons looking to save a few dollars. Issues such as workers’ compensation, public liability, housing indemnity (on resale within seven years) and compliance with safety requirements must be considered if you are thinking about taking this path.

ELEBRATED WA artist Murray Gill and his equally talented wife, Juanita Gill-Hille, are expertly painting the town red now they’ve moved their popular homewares and art supplies store to bigger premises in Subiaco. In addition to selling a quirky mix of home decor and the finest art materials from Europe, the dynamic duo have opened a bespoke bar, aptly named Juanita’s, behind their shop. What better way to start – or finish – your retail therapy than by kicking back in the retro-inspired surrounds with a tapas plate and chilled glass of wine or beer? “We wanted a bigger store and we also wanted the chance to enliven Subiaco,” Murray says. “The people of Perth really appreciate it when you do something different.” Juanita’s funky fit-out is already a big hit with the customers. “We were really lucky to find the retro furniture,” Murray says.

“People keep coming in and wanting to buy it, but it’s not for sale.” Luckily, there are plenty of other goodies on offer in this “emporium of delights” to satiate savvy shoppers. Glassware sourced from a Danish design studio, handmade leather-bound journals, international lifestyle magazines and European linens are some of the best-sellers. “Each item is rather exquisite,” Murray says. “Stockists ﬁnd us – we very rarely search the net to ﬁnd them.” Murray’s sought-after artworks add brilliant pops of colour to the shop walls. The children’s books he’s written and illustrated brighten up some of the shelves, too, as does his fabulous range of cards. Handmade buttons, hand-poured candles, cotton tape, children’s toys and an amazing range of vintage-style twine from the UK have been other surprise successes with the clientele.

“I love all of the little things you can ﬁnd in the store, particularly the small gifts for kids,” Murray says. “I’m also big on items with beautiful packaging. Basically, anything Juanita and I like goes.” Even the local pooches have given Gill & Hille the paws up, thanks to the thoughtfully placed bowl of fresh water near the front door. Sandra Peterson

ITH designated alfresco areas now de rigueur in the modern Australian home, more attention than ever is being paid to outdoor furnishings, lighting, appliances, shading and accessories. It’s not enough for these areas to simply be functional throughout the year – they now need to look the part, too. “Alfresco living has been one of the most signiﬁcant areas of change in the home over the past few years,” says Joel Bartfeld, Shine Group creative director and the man behind SunnyLife. “What was once an afterthought is now a key entertaining and living space. Almost all new homes have a conceived outdoor living space – be it courtyard, winter garden, terrace or even outdoor room. Australia’s climate, lifestyle and environment mean that people seek the outdoors and try to integrate that into their homes.” Bunnings leisure buyer Cameron Rist agrees that Australians are utilising their outdoor spaces more than ever before. “Many people see the alfresco area as ‘the ﬁfth room’, an extension of the indoor space

and somewhere they spend a good portion of the year,” he says. “More homes now include a sophisticated alfresco area equipped with removable shade structures, storage and elegant furnishings. Landscaping has also expanded into feature walls and water features, vegetable patches, and sophisticated lighting to create the ideal ambience.” To ensure alfresco areas are utilised all year round and not just in summer, Joel recommends creating an area that is shaded, heated and easy to clean. “That way it’s not just cleaned up come summertime, only to become cobwebbed when the weather turns,” he says. According to Cameron, shade, lighting and stylish furnishings are necessities in today’s outdoor living space. Throw rugs, cushions and pillows are a cost-effective way to add comfort and colour to your alfresco area. Outdoor lighting is especially important heading into the darker winter months. “In addition to standard ﬂoodlights and downlights, ambient lighting can help to alter the mood of alfresco living spaces,” Cameron says.

This season in particular, alfresco areas are all about relaxing and entertaining in style, says Frank Novembre, managing director of Domo Collections. “Outdoor furniture is about large feature dining tables that make a strong statement,” he says. “Lighter-coloured furniture and accessories are one of the key trends this summer, particularly neutral colours such as pale hazelnut, light greys and shades of white. “Modular outdoor furniture that is contemporary in its design also seems to be a popular choice.” Lisa Shearon

RELATIVE BENEFITS Designing and building a home to suit three generations of the same family is a challenge many would find ambitious, but Glenway Homes managing director John Woodford enjoyed it

COMBINATION of practicality and aesthetics is evident in this sleek Shenton Park home, which allows multiple generations to enjoy separate living spaces but still interact as a family. John Woodford, managing director of Glenway Homes, was given the challenging task of creating a home that provided universal access for three generations of one family and gave each occupant the flexibility to live on all levels – if they so desired. The result is a modern and spacious family residence with a fully contained first-floor apartment, including a kitchen, laundry and guest bedroom, for overseas relatives. The need for steps has been minimised through the use of a lift between the first and ground floors, as well as a ramping path on the eastern side, which offers access to the home through the living area. Additionally, all external doors are fitted with wheelchair access sills and the doorways have been widened. Glenway’s attention to the practicalities of

family life is also evident in the separate entry for two rear bedrooms on the ground floor, minimising the sometimes noisy comings and goings of younger family members. John says it was their job to address each aspect of the brief throughout the building process. “We identified the issues on-site and reconciled them from a technical point of view so the client was satisfied,” he says. This home is not only functional, but also tasteful and contemporary, with a largely white palette highlighted with brown and black tones that complement the numerous artworks on display. The open-plan living rooms face north and take advantage of the natural light. They also have good ventilation, which minimises the need for airconditioning. “It works really well and the clients are very happy with how the layout’s translated,” John says. The owners and builder both agree the home’s view of the park and lake opposite is one of its strongest features.

The ground level has unobstructed views of the park but still retains its privacy thanks to a screen wall in the landscaped courtyard below it. The top balcony also takes advantage of the amazing views but, again, it has been built at an angle that isolates it from the street and allows its occupants to enjoy their privacy. The residence is surrounded by a beautifully developed landscape. Green tones accentuate the detailed stonework of the front steps, which John says is another particular standout for him. “This home really makes the most of its views and utilises its highlights,” he says. TIME TO PARTY Amanda and Andrew Cox are big on entertaining and being part of Silk Constructions enabled them to design and build their new Floreat home to reflect their outgoing lifestyle

HEN thinking about the home they wanted to live in, Amanda and Andrew Cox had Perth’s outdoor lifestyle and their penchant for simplicity and open-plan living at the forefront of their minds. Andrew is a director at Silk Constructions and together with Gary Cooper, a consultant in the company, the Coxes have created a luxurious home in Floreat that fully capitalises on the beautiful Perth weather and their love of entertaining. “The whole house is built around the main entertaining area, which is huge,” Amanda says. “We do an enormous amount of entertaining and we wanted to bring the indoors out.” And they most certainly have. The impressive house sits on a 870sq m block and has a swimming pool in the back garden. Large, frameless-glass bifold doors open from

the home to the alfresco area. There’s an ease to this space that’s very calming, Amanda says. “When the doors open to the main alfresco, the first thing you see is water. It’s a very Perth feel,” she says. The outdoor kitchen features a top-of-therange barbecue with a quartz glass dome and a DeLonghi fridge. The radiant quartz technology of the barbecue is extremely efficient and prevents food from drying out. The spacious indoor kitchen is also beautifully designed and has been fitted with Miele appliances. A separate scullery means there are plenty of spaces where meals can be prepared. It’s the best feature of the house, according to Amanda. Cooking and entertaining aside, the fivebedroom, three-bathroom residence also has two extra powder rooms and luxurious built-in furniture. No expense has been spared on the materials

and ﬁttings, giving the house an opulent feel throughout. Bringing together stone, glass and wood, the natural building materials exude simplicity and elegance. “The house has a real casual feel even though it’s high-spec with top-class finishings,” Amanda says. “It’s very luxurious, but simple and natural looking, conducive to the Perth lifestyle.” CaesarStone is a prominent feature throughout, along with the American black walnut ﬂoorboards imported from Virginia. The bathrooms have Villeroy & Boch basins and high-quality Grohe taps. A Victoria + Albert bath is the crowning jewel in the resort-worthy master suite’s ensuite. OUR WA designers are vying for top honours at this year’s prestigious The Edge competition, which is being held at the Sydney Exhibition Centre from Wednesday to Friday. Now in its ninth year, the leading international design competition is renowned for unearthing our next generation of furniture design talent. The hotly anticipated event, which is a highlight of the annual Australian International Furniture Fair, has received entries from 40 gifted designers from Australia, New Zealand

and Switzerland. Seating has emerged as a strong trend for 2012, with chairs, stools and recliners accounting for almost half of the 50 designs submitted in the Student, Commercial, Concept and Green categories. The Student Award is the leading category in The Edge 2012, boasting an impressive 27 out of the 50 competition entries. Designs have been entered from the Sydney College – Enmore Design Centre, Lidcombe TAFE in Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney, the University of NSW, Sturt School for Wood at Mittagong, NSW, the University of

South Australia, RMIT, Swinburne University in Melbourne and Perth’s Central Institute of Technology. The talented ﬁnalists will be competing for the competition’s four Awards for Excellence in Design, which will be presented on Wednesday. WATER’S THE ROOT OF IT In the second of a four-part series on how a waterwise garden was built from the ground up in Kings Park, Trevor Cochrane turns the spotlight on the need for a proper irrigation system

RRIGATION design is a specialist ﬁeld these days. It’s no longer just about joining pipes and understanding water pressure, but very much a science dedicated to delivering the basic requirements to the plants’ roots without waste. After developing an overall design brief to restore the historic gardens around Mount Eliza House in Kings Park, our client employed The WaterShed Water Systems – one of the state’s most decorated and respected irrigation companies – to design the system that would

best deliver water to the plants and turf we used in the gardens. The system designed used a state-of-the-art irrigation controller that allows for many different watering options to be used. It also includes a rain sensor, which ensures the system will not run if water is around in the form of heavy dew or rain. Any sign of moisture that could be used by the plants and this system shuts down, waiting until it’s dry enough again to start running. The water is delivered by two different

techniques. If this lawn was not going to be so heavily used by people wearing high heels or hammering in tent pegs, we would have used sub-surface lines with in-built emitters that slowly drip water directly to the roots, but due to the heavy-use nature of the location we carefully installed stream-throw sprinklers. These sprinklers provide precise and steady delivery of moisture to the lawn, but are not impacted by heavy winds like the old fashioned, cheap pop-up sprinklers are. The ability to adjust the stream of these sprinklers means you can also avoid the water running over pathways, reducing the amount of waste through watering materials that don’t need moisture. The garden beds do utilise sub-surface irrigation. This system runs off separate solenoid valves and has a ﬁlter system and ﬂushing system in place to ensure the emitters, which are buried under mulch directly above the plants’ roots, are not blocked or impeded in any way. These systems do require a bit more maintenance than the old-fashioned ones, but they save thousands of litres of precious water when installed and designed properly.

The greatest benefit is the water is delivered under the mulch so there is no evaporation at all. Plants get the right amount of moisture delivered precisely to the root zones and because the water seeps into the soil, it encourages the plants’ root systems to grow deeply and follow the water down into the subsoil. These deeper roots mean the plants do not stress as badly on extremely hot days when you will often see shrubs suffering noticeably. This system costs a little more to install, but can be done as cheaply as $6.50/sq m as a DIY project, but a professionally installed system makes a world of a difference. Plant selection is a major area of importance. Selecting plants that can thrive in the garden aspect they are planted in is essential. This is where a professional designer and horticulturist come to the fore. How many times have you purchased a plant and placed it in the garden only to see it perish slowly over a few months? Many gardeners learn by experience, with the garden initially looking like a battlefield, with similar carnage. Plants are my great passion and selecting the varieties to be used around Mount Eliza House required some historical research to find out about the original plantings and placings and select the same or new improved forms of the species used. Hibiscus once featured heavily in these gardens as did ivy and fishbone ferns, which held the bank together on the eastern side of the home. The ivy and fishbone ferns have made a satisfactory living groundcover mulch under the enormous moreton bay figs, but we removed them from all other beds. A thick layer of organic mulch (100mm deep) was placed across the garden beds after planting so these water-consuming living mulches were not required. The shrubs we used are all listed on the Water Corporation’s website under “Waterwise Plants for WA” and each one offers colour and incredible hardiness. The original rose species were sourced from iconic rose grower Bob Melville, at Melville Nurseries in Carmel. All of his roses are grown on the rootstock fortuniana, which is renowned for its hardiness in dry climates and sandy soils. Roses grown and established on this rootstock can easily survive a summer without being watered and they are often found alive in demolition sites long after the residents have gone and the sprinklers have been turned off. The varieties themselves were selected (in

consultation with me) by Bob’s son, Robbie Melville, who drives the rose specialist business these days, and he selected them for their hardiness and suitability to Perth gardens. At Melville Nurseries you can actually see the varieties you’re thinking about buying, growing in display gardens. This allows you to develop a complete understanding of how they will look and perform in your own garden. The ﬁnal planting list we came up with featured natives such as the bottlebrush “Kings Park Special” and hardenbergia “Happy Wanderer” to cascade out of tiered garden beds. Trees included chinese tallow and crepe myrtles, as well as rosewoods. The planting list also featured exotic, hardy plants such as the red cottonwood hibiscus, the pink-ﬂowering indian hawthorn and architectural feature plants such as the agave attenuata, a plant that is almost indestructible in our conditions. We required some retaining for the riverside of the block and decided to build a limestone wall where people could sit among beautiful gardens while admiring one of the most beautiful views on the planet. We used bevelled-edged reconstituted limestone blocks from Brikmakers. I described it in one of my articles as a house plant and she is confused. House plants are varieties that will do well in the home environment. Princettias are a great example and can easily spend at least six weeks indoors. But all house plants do come from an outdoor environment, with most coming from shaded, under-canopy positions. This is not the case with princettias. They can handle full sun and will grow happily outdoors. If you keep it in a pot, then placing it in a spot where there is afternoon sun in winter and morning sun only in spring and summer is ideal.

My family My husband, Rob, six-year-old son, Anthony, and five-year-old daughter, Alessia, are everything to me. They are what drive me and I love them to bits. I love to bring Anthony and Alessia joy and my cakes always bring a smile to their faces. Cakes It’s not really about making the cakes. It’s about the celebration and being a part of that. My inspiration comes from the clients. It’s not work for me – I go beyond the work aspect and get personal. Every cake I make is different from the last one. Cupid’s Delight The shop is where it all started back in 2002. Now there are 10 of us at Cupid’s Delight and it’s a really good team, I couldn’t do it all without them. They’re like my family, too, and have the same passion for cakes. Cooking and recipes My ancestry is French, and we’re all foodies, the whole family. Monzu’ is my maiden name and the Monzu’s were known for fusing French and Italian cuisine. Learning about Italian food from my mum and my grandmothers has given me skills that no training could ever provide. I treasure the recipes that have been handed down, particularly the ones in my dad’s grandma’s recipe book. Cake Artists Australia This is a network that offers training, seminars and workshops through its website and the Everything Baking Exhibition. My main focus is to show the world the talent there really is in Australia. Giving to others If I’ve got a spare cake left over at work, I’d rather give it to someone than throw it away. It’s just about giving back. I love making other people happy.

My kitchen and scullery The kitchen is the heart of the home and it brings everyone together. It’s my favourite part of the house, but I couldn’t live without the scullery. It’s great because I can close it off and contain all the mess and clutter. I do all my work in there.

Life

I’m thankful every day for my life. I’m grateful for everything that I have and the opportunities that I get. You get one chance to make the most of every day. I do work hard, but I also love my family and enjoy being with them every minute that I can.

Laptop

My laptop has absolutely everything on it – recipes, pictures of cakes, my whole cake collection from goodness knows when and all the photos of my kids. Don’t worry, it’s all backed up!

10 Buddy Valastro, star of Cake Boss When I first saw Buddy on TV, there was something about him that I really liked. Perhaps it’s because he’s Italian and there’s a family aspect to his work, which I can really relate to. I first spoke to him about a year ago when I was assisting a Perth radio station to help a terminally ill Perth woman speak to Buddy, her idol. Since then I’ve persuaded Buddy to visit Australia to meet all his fans and to be part of a larger baking event. He’s a very, very nice guy.
