F your Christmas wish list includes getting on the property ladder, then it may be worth gifting yourself some creative savings plans. Penny-watching, scaling back on life’s luxuries and avoiding the temptation to rack up store credit can be challenging at this time of the year. However, experts say, with a little willpower, planning and creative thinking, it is possible to enjoy the festivities and remain on track towards home ownership. Their suggestions for fast-tracking homebuying goals include opening a specific First Home Saver Account, asking for cash gifts instead of presents, surrounding yourself with people sharing the same home-ownership ambitions, asking parents to act as guarantor and finding extra work to boost earnings. Mortgage Choice corporate affairs manager Belinda Williamson says the challenge of rising rents and high living costs demands more creative savings strategies from potential first homebuyers. Belinda says a great savings boost can be gained from setting up automatic salary deductions to a First Home Saver Account – an account that attracts a low 15 per cent tax on interest earned and a government contribution on the first $5000 deposited each year. Belinda says those struggling to meet lenders’ savings history requirements should find out which financial institutions will accept rental payments as proof of savings history. She says rental payments can be used as evidence of savings history if the borrower has a minimum 5 per cent deposit and can prove a continuous rental history of at least six to 12 months through a licensed property manager. Another strategy can include buying the property with someone else or asking a family member to guarantee the loan by offering a portion of their own property as security. According to Belinda, both methods depend on obtaining legal and financial advice, but are worth considering to break into the market sooner or increase borrowing capacity. Resolve Finance general manager Don Crellin says given that emotional overspending, especially for those with children, is hard to avoid at Christmas, it is worth setting a budget. “Realistically, most of us overspend during the festive period, however, by setting a spending limit, you will be consciously aware of the extent of your expenditure,” he says. “You may have been saving hard for many months towards the deposit on your new home. Don’t blow it with impulse purchases.” Don also warns potential first homebuyers to be vigilant about paying bills on time during the holiday season. He says being late with a bill can negatively

affect a credit report and ultimately make the difference between housing loan approval and rejection. Those saving for a housing deposit can also consider asking for funding gifts, rather than presents at Christmas, says Absolute Money Tree Group director Ron Cole. Ron says another tip for cash-strapped ﬁrsttime buyers is to ﬁnd out if a prospective lender will incorporate the costly lender’s mortgage insurance premium into their loan rather than billing it separately, so the borrower doesn’t have to eat into their savings. He says another alternative is to avoid paying this insurance, which can amount to thousands of dollars, by getting a family member to guarantee a portion of the loan. Ron says the homebuyer will need to service the loan on their own, but the guarantee – which can be removed once enough equity has been built up in a property – will enhance borrowing capacity. “An experienced mortgage broker can explain the types of loans that allow homebuyers to utilise their parents’ support, “ Ron says. Surrounding yourself with people who share the same ambitions is a great way to stay on track towards home ownership, says Aussie Living brand manager Anthony Oldershaw. Anthony says this type of support is offered through Aussie Living’s The Movers First Home Club. Anthony says the club, which is dedicated to assisting people to save a housing deposit,

REAPING THE REWARDS OF SAVINGS AND SACRIFICES HAVING a plan and making sacrifices to get a deposit together is well worth the effort, says first-time owner Tanya Dupagne. Tanya says she spent two years saving the $20,000 deposit towards her first home, which she moved into in June this year. She says she bought her Homebuyers Centre three-bedroom, two-bathroom home on a cottage block in Wellard for an affordable $340,000. Tanya, 30, who is general manger of the Global Good Foundation, says she went without a lot of unnecessary purchases, sacrificed going out and, where possible, took in extra contract work to get her deposit together. “Even now, I’m still saving for decorating and getting things done bit by bit,” Tanya says. “The house is still semi-painted, but I am happy to have my own home and have a foothold in the property market. “I’m glad to have a cottage lot, because with my busy schedule as a community worker and councillor, I don’t have time to maintain anything bigger.”

Let’s start off with the basics:

Now that the gift is wrapped and taped together, we come to the fun part of embellishing your gifts.

✱ Always steer clear of bargain-bin wrapping

✱ Ribbon is nothing new but have you considered

paper because it is usually very thin and has a high likelihood of tearing before it gets to its beneficiary. A higher quality, thicker wrapping paper will be just what you need to get perfect folds and corners when wrapping gifts and to make sure the gift stays concealed. ✱ Another costly mistake is to either measure too much or not enough paper to cover your gift. Make sure the paper reaches around the width of the gift before cutting it and leave about half of the height of the gift at either end to fold in. ✱ This tip is easily the most important I can give you with regard to giftwrapping. No matter how neatly you place it, using sticky tape to hold your wrapping paper together never looks good! Make double-sided tape your new best friend. It is super easy to apply and can be stuck underneath all the joins so it looks like the paper is staying in place all by itself. A glue tape dispenser, which works in a similar way to a white-out dispenser, can also be used as a faster substitute to double-sided tape. From personal experience, this simple technique will amaze people. The only exception I can

think of to this rule is to use a new product called washi tape. Made in Japan, these brightly coloured and patterned masking tapes have various uses, including giftwrapping. Maximising the tape’s effect by using it in bold, dramatic ways looks really fascinating.

getting more creative with it? Why not vary the types and sizes of the bows? Try weaving lengths of ribbon around the gift or use more than one ribbon in different widths, patterns and colours. In place of ribbon, raffia can also look great tied around gifts with neutral colour palettes, and striped twine has become very much in vogue. If you have bought patterned wrapping papers, there is also the option of tying small bows or using diamantes to accent certain parts. For vintage-styled wrapping, using a piece of sheet music can really set off the look or you can perhaps try hanging a Christmas bauble or wooden ornament from a bow as an extra gift. Why not pull together all of your bits and bobs lying around the house to handmake a gift tag for someone rather than using a generic store tag? Alphabet stamps are another easy option to imprint any name directly on to the paper or perhaps you might like to attach a large cut-out of the recipient’s first initial on the top of the gift. Those of you who want the extra challenge could even try to print a “to and from” message

directly on to a gift bag or design your own wrapping paper by collaging photos or family Christmas greetings and printing them onto a large plain-coloured sheet of paper. Working in the stationery industry, I have a strong preference and love of using paper, but being creative and pushing boundaries is great, too. If you really want to go crazy with your Christmas wrapping, you could perhaps use fabric as an alternative to wrapping paper. Even a shirt from the local thrift store could be used to wrap a gift. Or why not ﬁnd an interesting object to package your gift in, such as a hollowedout old hardback book? You really are only limited by your imagination, so get inspired this Christmas. We all want to make an extra effort for those special people in our lives and personalised giftwrapping is where you can really show off. ✱ Annie P. USTINE Murphy takes pride in ﬁnding special items to decorate her home throughout the year, so it should come as no surprise that Christmas is a big event in her household. The co-owner of Kitchen Warehouse says that although she is yet to ﬁnish fully furnishing her family’s new Floreat home, she is keen to make it feel cosy for the festive season. “I like my house to feel like it is lived in, however, I sometimes feel I do not have a choice given how messy my kids are,” she says. “Our family loves a traditional Christmas and the kids get very excited about decorating very early in November.” Staving off the Christmas decor until the last moment, Justine showcases her unique style in the main living areas of her home right through the year. She says time spent working in Italy when she was younger has had an effect on how she now decorates her home.

Warehouse chopping boards are among her favourite items. “It is nice to have access to pieces that are lovely to use and look at,” she says. One of Justine’s treasured pieces of furniture is a large, old dining table that came from the Woolstores in Fremantle. This gets put to good use during the festive season, she says. “Not only does it have character, it is also able to ﬁt in a lot of people around it, so it is great when we entertain our family and friends,” she says. “My favourite part about decorating the house is setting the table for Christmas Day as this is always fun.” Justine decorates the table differently each year in a personalised and traditional style, but always makes sure she has a beautiful bunch of ﬂowers to complete the look. “In the past couple of years I have tried to

“I suppose living and working for a family in Italy has allowed me to appreciate that pieces collected over the years or antiques add a special touch to the home and it is often worth splurging on certain items as they will be with you for a while,” she says. “I love buying old pieces and antiques at second-hand markets or antique shops and I have also been known to pick up bits from verges. Sometimes having eclectic pieces is a way of creating a more homely approach.” Justine says she also appreciates new items and her job at Kitchen Warehouse means she is lucky to have access to some of the best kitchenware around. “When we go over to the trade fairs we also have the opportunity to purchase items for ourselves for our house,” she says. The table sits near a striking stone ﬁreplace that Justine says creates a cosy atmosphere when it’s lit up. The living, dining and kitchen areas lead to an enclosed alfresco space that has a table, cushioned seating and a wood-ﬁred oven that is perfect for enjoying a hot Australian Christmas. Justine, her husband, Chris, and their three children decorate a big Christmas tree which they try to give a “fresh look” each year with new decorations from Kitchen Warehouse. “We love to add all their (the children’s) school and homemade decorations, too, as it personalises the tree,” Justine says. Abolition of the carbon tax as it will increase the cost of building for no good purpose. The retention of the Australian Building & Construction Commission by the Federal Government to keep unlawful industrial relations practices in check. The engagement of more builders in the State Government’s affordable housing strategy to

capitalise on shorter construction periods and competitive prices during the current economic downturn. ✱ A more responsive approach by some statutory agencies such as Western Power, Horizon Power and certain local government authorities. If each of these wishes is fulﬁlled, the builders’ stocking would be overﬂowing with happiness – and homebuyers would be a happier bunch, too.

In no particular order, these “gifts” include: ✱ Europe sorting out its economic

problems to provide some stability and certainty in world markets, which impacts on the Australian economy. ✱ At least one more reduction in interest rates by March next year. ✱ A smooth transition into the new Building Act, which is due to commence on April 2, 2012, and promises to reduce building approval periods. ✱ Extending the 0.2 per cent construction training levy to all resource construction projects which would considerably increase the training of building apprentices and other workers in the building industry.

HE past 12 months have been tough for most builders and specialist contractors with a downturn in work opportunities and a ﬁercely competitive housing industry. Next year promises to be a little better, but uncertainty still prevails as a result of a volatile economic scene overseas. Builders have provided Santa with a dream list of gifts that would beneﬁt their festive season cheer and their economic prospects during 2012.

A-Z BUILDING information A loft is a sensible way to go if you are looking for more space, but there are a number of rules to follow, says Master Builders technical adviser Romina De Santis

HEN looking at ways to maximise your ﬂoor space, considering a loft design can provide a cost-effective option without necessarily building a two-storey home. The Building Code of Australia has included new provisions for sloping ceilings to accommodate this trend. There are still compliance matters that must be considered when designing a new home with a loft or retroﬁtting a room into your roof space.

The Building Code of Australia requires: ✱ The room must have a hard-wired smoke

detector installed. The installation of smoke detectors for sloping ceilings has specific requirements to ensure they activate promptly in the case of a fire. ✱ The stairs must maintain the minimum 2m head clearance from the edge of the nosing to the ceiling. This may dictate where the stairs may be located.

✱ The existing ceiling frame must be suitable for

the proposed loads and must be inspected and certified by a professional engineer. ✱ The ceiling height must achieve an average of 2.4m for a habitable room (bedroom, games room) and 2.1m for a non-habitable room such as a store. The average is taken from the point where the ceiling height is not less than 1.5m to the highest point. Parts of the room with a height less than 1.5m are excluded from the calculation. The average must be achieved for two thirds of the area of the proposed loft.

My new home is approaching completion and I am worried about possible theft and vandalism over the Christmas break when the house will be unattended. Have you got any advice? The traditional Christmas/New Year shutdown means that many building sites will be vacant during this holiday period. There may be an increased risk of theft and vandalism during this period. If the house is under construction and practical completion has not been reached, any loss or damage will be covered by the builder’s insurance. However, as many handovers are completed before Christmas, it may be that you are responsible for the site once practical completion has occurred. You should ensure that you have insurance in place – even through a cover note if possession of the site has passed over to you. Builders have a range of strategies to deal with theft and vandalism for projects under construction. These strategies can include security lighting, alarms, hidden cameras, fencing, signage, neighbourhood awareness schemes and even security patrols. There are many practical things that you can do to protect your new home if you have taken possession already and will be away from home during the festive season. Think about security screens, deadlocks and/or security film on windows. Be careful about garden design so that entry points are visible from the road and not obscured by vegetation. Alert your neighbours that you will be away and make sure that newspaper and other home deliveries are cancelled and mail is collected. Keep an internal light on and even a radio playing. Keep a car in the driveway. These are all deterrents to would be intruders.

century. To this day the term Monzu’ is used to refer to a great chef. Julia is proud of her culinary heritage. “My mum and my grandmothers have given me generations of skills that no training could ever provide,” she says. “My mum always brings our family together with food and especially cake, so I owe my obsession to the most beautiful lady I know.” Hard to believe, then, that Julia was once an accountant. It wasn’t until 1997, when she made a surprise wedding anniversary cake for her parents that she decided to make a career change from accounting to cake decorating. “There was something magical about bringing people together at a party and celebrating it with a cake,” Julia says. In 1999 Julia began her cake styling business and by 2002 had established the Hamilton Hill showroom for Cupid’s Delight. Nine years on, she and her team of cake artists create cakes for celebrities such as Kelly Clarkson, Sir Richard Branson, Chris Brown and Rihanna, as well as everyday people just looking to celebrate with something memorable, unique and delicious. “Every single cake we make is different from the last one,” she says. “You can’t make that same cake for someone else. “My inspiration comes from the clients. I go

beyond the work aspect of it and get personal. I ask the client every single thing I can possibly ask to get a feel for their personality and to make their cake unique.” This year Julia also set up Cake Artists Australia, a network for bakers, cake decorators and pâtissiers that offers training, seminars and workshops through its website and the Everything Baking Exhibition, which in February 2012 will bring Buddy Valastro, star of the TV show Cake Boss, to Perth for the very first time. Julia’s creative flair isn’t just confined to cakes. Her home is also testament to her innate sense of style. Contemporary and uncluttered, the renovated property is now a stylish fourbedroom family home with hints of Julia’s personality in the light fittings, soft furnishings and, of course, the kitchen. “The kitchen is my favourite space,” she says. “It’s big, with lots of room, lots of storage and two ovens. I just love standing here cooking.” The scullery is Julia’s favourite feature. “I saw a kitchen with a scullery in a homes magazine and thought, ‘I have to have that’. It’s great because I can close it off and contain all the mess and clutter. I do all my work in there,” she says. When it comes to Christmas decorating, Julia

HOME SWEDE HOME With the long days and warm weather in Perth, it may be difficult for the Erikssons to re-create the Swedish Christmases they’re used to, but they try to make it as traditional as possible

AVING lived in Australia for the past six years, Kent and Sara Eriksson have become accustomed to the warm holiday climate, but that hasn’t stopped them from wanting to re-create their much-missed Swedish Christmases each year. Kent, who is the sales and marketing manager as well as the home shop manager for Ikea stores in WA and South Australia, says the hot weather and long daylight hours in Perth make it harder to create the same atmosphere as in Sweden, where it gets dark at about 3pm. Sara, who works at Swedish stationery store Kikki.K, says that although she tries to keep as many of their Swedish traditions as possible, she also enjoys being able to decorate and entertain outdoors in Australia. “In Sweden we would have many more window lights and lights in every single window facing the street. But here, decorating is focused more in the kitchen area,” she says. “We would also have candles, cushions and throws in every room, but in Australia it is different because you don’t need to create that warm, cosy feel.” Kent says the couple and their three children – Selma, Albin and Ellen – compensate for the fewer window lights by having about 400 lights on the Christmas tree. Sara says the Christmas tree is her favourite feature because it reminds her of her childhood back home, where her dad used to go

into the forest and bring back a real Christmas tree each year. Despite the extended daylight hours here, fairy lights, outdoor lanterns and light-up stars are put up around the Eriksson patio area and are turned on at night. Inside, the family likes to keep it fairly traditional but still aims to add something new each year, be it a different pattern, design or colour. Sara says adding some bright colours here and there has become important because they have always lived in homes where white has been the predominant colour. Sara loves to decorate the kitchen table to give it a festive feel for breakfast, lunch and dinner and uses an assortment of Christmasthemed napkins, plates, glasses and table runners in holiday-season colours. “The decorations are great, but to me the food is most important,” Kent says. Decorating their home is a very important time to spend as a family, the couple say. They make sure to put up their Christmas tree on Albin’s birthday – to make it a special day for their son. “The whole family helps decide on the colour scheme,” Sara says. Although there are many Ikea decorations around the home, Sara says some old decorations are also brought into the mix. A Santa, given to her by her grandmother, sits on their outdoor table. This is special because Sara has had it since she was three. A lantern used by her dad when he used to dress up as

Santa when she was a child is another item that is very special. “They may not be as pretty and stylish as the new decorations, but they have meaning and I will give them to our kids when they have children,” Sara says. Kent says it is always important to him to include a Christmas feature that has four candles so that, starting one month before, one is lit every advent Sunday leading up to Christmas. A wooden advent calendar that counts down the days to Christmas and a Christmas wreath are also prominent features in the Eriksson home each year. “We do try to make it feel like home,” Sara says. “We eat the gingerbread house after we have taken the decorations down if it is still good.” Kristy Symonds

According to Greg, many of Dusk’s yearround products become more popular during the holidays. “The metallic taper candles are very much in demand at Christmas time,” he says. The Elements candles rate highly among Greg’s personal favourites. “It’s a product made entirely out of recycled vegetable wax,” he says. “You can create your own theme in your house.” Frosty the tea-light holder has been one of the biggest hits since making an appearance in Dusk stores in 2007. “What started as a bit of fun has turned into a nationwide craze,” Greg says. Over the years, Frosty has since been joined by a mother, father, siblings, a pet dog and cat, grand-parents and even a girlfriend called Pippa – some of which are limited editions. As the holiday season takes hold, customers ﬂock to the Australian retailer’s shops to stock up on an extensive range of Christmas-themed decor and gifts, not to mention the festive-scented candles. Dusk CEO Greg Milne, who caught up with the HOME team at the new Innaloo store, says the company contantly aims to create products customers can take away for a really good experience – be it a candle with a great scent or a Christmas decoration to create the festive spirit in the home. “We want to provide gifts to make someone

TIP 1: With Christmas almost here, many of us like to have a real Christmas tree. There’s nothing quite like that lovely smell of pine. There is also nothing quite like all those pine needles all over the floor that the vacuum cleaner just can’t handle. Prevention is much better than cure, so before you put your tree up, take it outside and shake it upside down to remove any loose needles. Then take a can of cheap hairspray and lightly spray all along the trunk and branches. This acts as a light adhesive, preventing the needles from falling. Another good tip to keep your Christmas tree green and growing rather than brown and dropping needles is to make sure it has plenty of water. If you use a Christmas tree holder, make sure it is filled with water and add a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar to sweeten the water and feed the tree. You can use florists’ sachets as an alternative. If you cut a centimetre off the bottom of the trunk before putting it in water it will absorb more water and stay alive longer. TIP 2: Christmas morning is a magical time to spend with family, but even at this time disaster can strike. What can you do if someone spills a drink on the torn shreds of Christmas paper sitting on the carpet? Suddenly you have a multicoloured carpet. Act quickly! Place handfuls of white paper towel over the stain and stand on it to remove as much moisture as you can and as quickly as you can. Next, take a cloth rung out tightly in white vinegar and starting from the outside edge of the stain, scrub towards the centre of it. Rinse your cloth out again and again in the white vinegar and continue until the stain is gone. Then take some more paper towel and dry the carpet, starting from the centre of the stain and working your way outwards. Cleaning from the outside towards the centre and then drying from the centre towards the outside prevents water marks. If you have children, here’s a little bit of advice: Make sure you have lots of different-size batteries at home just in case some of their gifts come without them. A BERRY NICE GIFT Fruit trees make ideal gifts during the festive season and avocado, mango and berries are among the favourites for friends and relations to remember you for years to come

HRISTMAS is a special time of the year for most of us, but the act of giving gifts that have meaning is not always as easy as you might initially think. What do you get someone who has it all? And what can you get that they will remember well into the future? When visiting people in their gardens, I’m often struck by the comments that they make about plants that have sentimental value because they make me realise the special meanings behind things that I’ve been given for my own garden. Plants are a classic. If I had a dollar for every time someone said, ‘My mum gave me this’, ‘This was my sister’s’, ‘We planted this to commemorate a birth or to celebrate a personal milestone’, I’d be rich! Fruit trees are always remembered and in recent years mangoes and avocados have become the favourite gift because they offer the promise of great taste and good health. This year, berries – and particularly antioxidant-rich goji berries – will be popular for the same reason. Great Christmas gift plants include trees for people starting out in new homes or people celebrating signiﬁcant birthdays.

Indoor offerings, such as philodendron totems, syngoniums and terrariums, are all something that will thrive for years and remind the owner of the gift. Gifts are about caring and plants that stay with us for a long time are cared for greatly, which makes the gift even more special. Bringing festive cheer is easy when you add plants such as poinsettias to the table setting. Their rich, red bracts glow and tie in with the decorative theme beautifully. Another popular gift at this time of the year are starter bonsai plants. These plants can live for decades in a dwarf state (some bonsai are hundreds of years old). Garden gifts that are unique change almost annually. In recent years, wall art has been popular, but this year an unusual metal watering can or leopard-print gumboots might be the way to go. Most independent garden centres have gift centres and these are the places to go to ﬁnd something different and out of the ordinary. Books are always popular and a new release by Jamie Durie, the celebrity designer who is now based in Hollywood, will be appreciated by many. Jamie’s success has been phenomenal when

you consider that he is only just past the 40-year-old milestone. His book celebrates the favourite 100 gardens that his practice has built over the past 10 years. Most designers would be happy to have designed and built 100 gardens in this time frame, yet Jamie says he struggled to select the best of them. Words escape you when you see the gardens he’s designed – and, in this instance, they escaped Jamie, too. The book is 384 pages of just pictures and is a pictorial demonstration of gardens he’s designed, including the 2009 million-dollar Chelsea Gold Medal-award winning creation, as well as his own personal garden he has only just recently completed. Jamie is a pretty down-to-earth guy who once lived in Kalamunda, not far from my home, and he has always been a great supporter of my work with The Garden Gurus. He recently visited my garden – which was a little intimidating considering his immense talents – to talk with me about his new book, which I can guarantee will inspire the Christmas gift recipient no end. Lyn Strafehl, via email, has a crepe myrtle that has burnt leaves and she wants to know how to avoid it happening in future. The crepe myrtle problem is common and there are a few potential causes. Firstly, fungal infection of the leaves will do similar damage and while you can spray for mildew, the real issue is the location of the tree in the garden. It needs to be in full sun and not allowed to get moist foliage in spring/ early summer. Mulching the soil heavily around the base is also important to avoid stress on roots.

Rose, via email, has standard roses in her front garden that are being attacked by parrots. She has hung shopping bags up to try to scare them but it doesn’t work. You need to adopt a two-fold strategy here. Firstly, buy a bird feeder and a couple of kilos of parrot mix and locate it away from the roses. The birds are eating the roses because they are hungry and possibly thirsty. Provide an alternative food and water source and they are likely to forget about your roses. Secondly, as the new growth emerges on the roses, throw some bird netting over the top of them for the first three weeks or so of the growing season. Trevor Cochrane

A FESTIVE ROLE YULE RELISH Householders have become more creative this Christmas and are adding a personal touch to bring the festive spirit alive

ECORATING your entire home for one day of the year? It may seem a bit excessive, but if it gets your family into the festive spirit then surely it’s worth doing – and worth doing well. Fortunately, there are a few quick and economical ways to spruce up your home and make Santa feel welcome this Christmas. “This season people are looking to transform their homes on a budget, so creativity is key,” says Micah Gamman, merchandising manager at Big W. “Colour schemes that carry from the front door wreath, to the tree, right through to the table and the garden g really y maximise on effect, but are quite simple and wa wallet-friendly to do.” To keep costs down, people peo are becoming decidedly more creative wi with their Christmas decorations. This creativity creativi has the added bonus of bringing a more personal touch to festive schemes. Over at Ikea, communications and interiors manager Ulrika Thor believes personalised festive schemes are the order of the season. “Often more subtle decorations can have a greater impact as people tend to notice the small touches,” she says. “Where possible, adopt a personalised approach through table decorations and small gifts.” Lighting continues to be a popular way to create a wonderland at home but, again, people are thinking on a smaller scale. “People are being much more environmentconscious about lighting,” Ulrika says. Micah says more people are opting for outdoor solar and LED lights to cut costs. “These are an eco-friendly way of creating a little sparkle for a sensational outdoor entertaining setting,” he says. For maximum impact this festive season, choose a simple colour scheme and stick to it. According to Ulrika, the traditional red and white is still the most popular, but an increasing number of people are opting for just neutral tones. “We’re also seeing more people choose a combination of white, silver and gold for their decorations, giftwrapping and table decorations,” she says. Frypan

reading Matthew Reilly books. When one of his new books comes out, I devour it within a few days. You just can’t put his books down. 7 Roasted garlic I have put together a little gourmet collection of condiments and sauces for the home cook and I absolutely love the whole roasted garlic from my Pete Evans range. It has a multitude of uses. I love it mixed through mayo on a sandwich or with some freshly cooked prawns. 8 Wine Celebrations are not complete without a glass or two of wine and this is one of my absolute favourites. I’m partial to any wine from the Jacob’s Creek Reserve range. 9 Seafood For Christmas lunch, you can’t go past seafood. Tassal smoked salmon is a must-have on my table on Christmas Day. 10 Pizza oven I have had a bit of success with pizzas in my restaurants, but did you know they can be really healthy and fun to make at home? Enter the new pizza makers. They make pizzas just like the ones you buy out – crispy base and all.

I am very excited about this Pete Evans frypan. It’s part of my new range of cookware, which I have been developing in conjunction with Baccarat for the past two years. All the pans have a non-stick, non-scratch, dishwasher-proof coating, which is guaranteed for life. I have been involved in every part of the range’s development – from the handles to the look and feel. Range Rover Evoke It’s a safe, stylish city car that I can park easily. It’s also great to be able to throw my surfboard and fishing gear in the back and head off-road. Namotu Island This is a great little place I have discovered in Fiji. The hosts are a welcoming Aussie couple and it’s near one of the best surf breaks I have found anywhere. Body contour pillow I’m pretty fussy about my pillows and I’ve have found one that I love so much I take it with me when I’m on the road so I’ll get a good night’s sleep. Smeg fridge I love the colour and design of these fridges. I spend so much time in the kitchen and it’s great to add a little colour and fun to it. Plus, the kids love it.
