OU only need to take a look at the Nautilus by Summit Homes to see just how far we’ve come from the modest outdoor areas of yesteryear. With its double alfresco, freestanding cabana with built-in fireplace, indoor/outdoor kitchen, wraparound water feature and skilfully landscaped gardens, this Alkimos display home epitomises today’s alfresco lifestyle. “The outdoor living area is regarded as a room in its own right now – it’s not simply an ‘add-on’,” says Tim Underwood, sales and marketing manager at Summit Homes. With the WA climate begging us to live and entertain outdoors, and builders responding with ever more desirable alfresco features, Tim NEED ADVICE? CALL US NOW... says it’s an exciting time for homebuyers. Developing a duplex or triplex isn’t complex “Designs are creative and dynamic, plus when you enjoy the Developwest D experience. builders are using different and exciting techniques and finishes,” he says. “Historically, designs have been basic because the focus was on a home’s interior. “This has pretty much been reversed, with clients telling us that they are more www.developwest.com.au willing to invest Contact David on 9431 8113, 0413 994 246 or email davidtims@rossnorthhomes.com.au

time and budget to create an indulgent outdoor lifestyle.” A recent survey by Summit highlighted that buyers’ No. 1 priority was a large alfresco coupled with integrated living areas. Other key design elements were raking ceilings, outdoor kitchens and seamless indoor/outdoor access. The Nautilus, which suits an 18.5m wide block, has certainly been designed to inspire. Offering space for an outdoor lounge as well as an outdoor dining room, the double alfresco is appearing in more and more display homes. In the Nautilus, the supersized outdoor area stretches across much of the back of the house, with raking ceilings running from the interior living zone to enhance the feeling of space and volume. Sliding doors from the kitchen, as well as from the living area, further blur the lines, while the home theatre can be either private or part of the party space. Tim says the overall design reflects the need for seamless indoor/outdoor living with a focus on convenience and practicality - for hosts and their guests. An upstand to the island bench shields the kitchen sink from view, yet the design still allows for an integrated breakfast bar.

The sleek two-tone kitchen features plenty of drawers, overhead cupboards, a two-door pantry, double wall oven, a wide cooktop and range hood, a wine rack and display recesses above the fridge/freezer recess. Elsewhere in the display, the designers have showcased recesses with built-in furniture to illustrate our desire for easy-living, clutter-free spaces. The three minor double bedrooms have been grouped together along with the second bathroom, laundry and powder room to form a children’s wing. Tucked quietly behind the garage is the master suite with an adjoining study. Taking its cues from five-star hotel suites, the main bedroom is certainly large and luxurious, with plenty of room for a sofa and a dressing table. Featuring a seat in the double-sized shower and twin vanities, the ensuite achieves that happy balance between open-plan and private. “We asked the Summit design team to really raise the bar with this home and I’m pleased to say they’ve delivered,” Tim says. Paula Aubin ✱ Versions of the Nautilus are available for narrower blocks and there is a more budget-friendly version starting at $187,540 ($198,950 South-West).

MAXIMISING SPACE
A
COTTAGE block is becoming the norm for more and more homebuyers but that doesn’t mean having to sacrifice an alfresco lifestyle. Often it’s simply a case of blurring the lines so that a compact outdoor area appears much bigger than it actually is. Designed to fit on a 12.5m wide block with rear access, the Bonneville is a low-maintenance home that makes the most of every square centimetre of space, both inside and out. One of the keys to the design is the way the central kitchen and the living area relate to the alfresco. “The airy ambience in the Bonneville is enhanced by the integrated family, kitchen and dining areas, which all flow out to the alfresco through large glass sliding doors,” says Andrew Shue, brand manager at Commodore Homes. “This means that the outdoors and indoors blend into one large area and guests can wander between the spaces without feeling separated.” The Bonneville is the first three-bedroom display home from Commodore Homes, which prides itself on its spacious, value-formoney designs. It’s also the first display the company has built on a rear-loaded lot, yet the home isn’t missing any of the design elements that Commodore clients demand. “The traditional ‘inclusions’ that many
families look for in their new home are still here in the Bonneville, despite the fact that it is a compact design,” Andrew says. “Families can still enjoy gathering in the alfresco and the home theatre, there’s a large all-inclusive family and dining area, and the master suite has a spacious walk-in wardrobe. “Effectively, this home has everything a smaller family needs in a well-planned, narrow-lot home.” The design team has made the kitchen the focal point of the living area, providing a generous island bench, a wide stainless steel oven, hotplate and range hood, and plenty of storage, including a double-door pantry and a display shelf above the fridge/freezer recess. The home theatre acts as a second living room or entertaining space, while the adjacent study makes a great office for home-based entrepreneurs, or it can easily be turned into a fourth bedroom. Overlooking the front the gardens, the master suite has space for an elegant reading chair, as well as a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite with large shower and twin vanities. With the garage at the rear, the designers have been able to play with the full width of the front elevation to present a smart, contemporary facade that features rendered walls, contrasting timber and a generous veranda. Andrew says the Bonneville responds to
demand from buyers who are opting for one of the many narrow lots available in new subdivisions. There’s also growing demand from people wanting to build on an infill block close to the city. “The challenge is to create a design that caters for these compact lots, while maximising every centimetre of available space without feeling cramped,” he says. OCATION, location, location – the most common saying you hear when people talk about property. Not only is location important for growth potential, but also because you should love where you live. Each homebuyer has their own specific set of wants, needs and requirements. Some families will want to live in one of Perth’s brand new estates, surrounded by new shops, schools and amenities. According to WA Housing Centre, these areas are particularly popular with people who have migrated to Perth and are looking for an up-and-coming place to live. The leading builder has also noticed that prospective homebuyers who have spent most of their lives living in Perth’s more established suburbs can find the prospect of moving away from the area they’ve grown up in daunting. WA Housing Centre brand manager Clayton Halloran says staying close to family, friends, shops and the general area they’re familiar with is important to many homebuyers, particularly those in the first-home market. “It’s where they’re comfortable and where they consider ‘home’ to be,” he says. Clayton says there’s a common misconception among first-time buyers that new home builders will only build on land in the new developments, but WA Housing Centre has set out to dispel this myth. “WA Housing Centre has found homesites in
The Cape Cuvier
established suburbs across Perth and created an exclusive range of home-and-land packages from just $360 per week,” he says. “This means that no matter where homebuyers want to build their dream first home, WA Housing Centre can create a home-andland package in the location they love, at a price they can afford.” Clayton says the packages have been created to give first-time buyers more options when choosing where they want to live. “We felt it was important to create these unique packages in well-established suburbs to give homebuyers a better range of options when choosing where they’d love to live,” he says.
“WA Housing Centre is committed to finding a home-and-land package that suits individual budgets and lifestyles. We have created a one-stop shop for homebuyers to make the home-building process as smooth and easy as possible. We’ll even help you secure your finance so you can get into your new home sooner.” Some of the current packages WA Housing Centre has created can be found in Coogee, Beaconsfield, Canning Vale, Greenwood, Craigie, Woodvale, Guildford, Wattle Grove and Bassendean. ✱ For more information on WA Housing Centre’s new campaign or to create a package in your area, visit wahousingcentre.com.au or phone: 9214 1111.

home HELP
Shannon’s tip of the week With summer on the way, it’s time to clean up those outdoor entertainment areas so we get the best use out of our “outdoor rooms”. Just like cleaning any other room in your home, we start at the top and work our way down. Lights, eaves, canvas awnings, polyurethane or polyester sails, veranda ceilings, shade cloth and fibreglass, polycarbonate or metal sheeting all benefit from a good clean. For most hard surfaces, the easy way to clean them down is to put a couple of teaspoons of dishwashing liquid into a bucket of warm water and sweep the surface with a soft, clean kitchen broom wrapped in pantyhose. Don’t overuse the
dishwashing liquid. (If you do, you’ll have to do too much rinsing afterwards.) To inhibit mould growth on these surfaces, place a quarter of a teaspoon of oil of cloves into a litre of water in a spray bottle and lightly mist the mixture over the clean surface. For porous materials such as canvas awnings, polyester or polyurethane sails or shadecloth, saltwater solution is by far the best way to clean. Place 1kg of uniodised cooking salt into a large bucket of water and stir it until it dissolves. Using a clean kitchen broom, sweep the mixture over your surfaces and leave it to dry. When it is dry, simply sweep away the salty crust that forms. It takes the dirt away with
it and leaves your fabrics waterproof as usual. It also has the added benefit of inhibiting mould. To inhibit spiders, mosquitoes and flies, place 1 teaspoon of lemon oil and 1 teaspoon of lavender oil into a litre of water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture over the head of your broom and sweep the clean dry surfaces with it. You can also use this mixture, sprayed on to a pair of pantyhose, to clean down light fittings. There’s nothing worse than turning the light on and seeing all those little insects’ dead bodies. If you also wipe the light bulb down and allow it to dry before using it you will find that each time you turn your light on you will have lovely fragrance of lemon and lavender chasing those bugs away.

of cloves solution and leave it for a further two hours before vacuuming thoroughly. The oil of cloves kills the spore and the bran is both an absorbent and a mild abrasive that won’t damage the carpet. You will notice the difference in the fragrance straightaway, but wait a week to make sure that none of the mould smell comes back before you install the dishwasher again. If the smell returns, repeat the process extending the area that you are cleaning further. Your leaking dishwasher may have wet more of your carpet than you think.
Our dishwasher sprang a leak through a cracked hose, but we didn’t realise we had problems until we noticed a mouldy smell coming from the drawer underneath it. We also found wet carpet about 2m from where the dishwasher is. So we removed the dishwasher and cleaned everything and let the carpet dry. I have put an absorbing humidifier in the drawer, but after three months the mouldy/musty smell is still there. We would like to make sure everything is OK before reinstalling our dishwasher. Can you please advise?
A
That smell is indeed mould. That strange musty odour is the smell of living spore and, from your description, it sounds like it has proliferated through the carpet. Simply drying it out is not enough. You will need to kill the spore. Otherwise, every time there is moisture in the air, your carpet will go mouldy again and the smell will come back. The best way that I have found to kill mould spore is to use oil of cloves. The quantities in the recipe are important! Don’t be tempted to make it any stronger! Place a quarter of a teaspoon of oil of cloves into one litre of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle and then lightly mist over the carpet area. Leave it for two days and then sprinkle with unprocessed wheat bran (it must be wheat bran, no other variety of bran will do) and sweep backwards and forwards working the bran into the carpet. Lightly mist again with the oil
Q
I have a twin-cab ute with a fibreglass canopy on it and due to carrying some spare tyres in the back I now have black scuff marks from the new spare tyres on the underside of the ceiling of the canopy. I have not tried to clean the surface yet because I know from past experience that it can be hard to clean tyre and rubber scuff marks off some surfaces.
A
This one is really easy to remove – you just need to know the knack. Take a rolled-up pair of pantyhose and lightly damp it with a small amount of glycerine (about half a teaspoon). Sprinkle the pantyhose ball with uniodised cooking salt (the cheap stuff from the bottom shelf of the supermarket). Simply rub it across the scuff marks and you’ll find they come off easily. You must use pantyhose, however, not just a cloth (they don’t need to be new pantyhose – they can be old laddered ones).
SHANNON LUSH Queen of clean Hi! Shannon here again to help you with your domestic disasters. Thanks for all your great questions this week. Keep them coming and keep them specific. To work out how to remove a stain, I need three pieces of information. I need to know what the stain is made of; what surface it’s on (Is there a varnish? What is the topmost surface that the stain is affecting?); and what, if anything, you’ve already tried to remove it. Each thing you try changes the chemical composition of the stain. Include a photograph if you can. Photographs really help the stain diagnosis. Don’t forget, alternative recycling questions are also welcome.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER Demolishing their old house, subdividing the block and building a new single-storey home has capitalised on the views from this Waikiki property and enhanced the owners’ beachfront lifestyle
T
HERE’S nothing quite like bowling over an old house and building a new abode from scratch – and that’s just what the owners of a worn-out Waikiki residence did, subdividing the block in the process and creating a bright, contemporary new home that takes full advantage of the beach views. Building designer Adrian Fratelle, the director of architectural and design practice Fratelle Group, helped the couple to realise their goals. Adrian says the old home was completely demolished, except for a large basement garage that the owners wanted to keep. The design brief from the couple, whose children had grown up and left home, was for a well-appointed, single-storey home on the newly subdivided block. The new three-bedroom, two-bathroom home was designed to capitalise on the views and enhance the beachfront lifestyle through the use of simple, open outdoor spaces. A timber-decked area to the front of the property takes advantage of the winter sun. “It’s a great viewing platform. They can sit out on the deck and watch dolphins swimming in the bay in the morning,” Adrian says.
HOME
He describes the front deck as a fairly universal space that can be used in a number of ways, including as an outdoor dining zone. An alfresco area to the back of the home – tucked in behind the kitchen – offers protection from the weather. The extensive use of glass in the open-plan kitchen, living and dining area still allows for views of the beach. The living area is a step down from the kitchen and dining room, a feature that makes it feel more cosy and also captures the views, according to Adrian. “The key aim for the whole design was to capture the views, especially with the living area,” he says. “The idea with having the fireplace there is that you can sit there and see the ocean and it’s very relaxed and an inviting place to be.” Adrian says the highlight windows and glazing were designed to be unobtrusive. A neutral interior colour scheme, including light timber flooring, was employed to allow the furniture to become a focal point. To emphasise the beach feel, the owners chose wicker chairs and added paintings and soft furnishings to provide splashes of colour.
Adrian says the exterior of the home has adopted “a contemporary weatherboard look” for the most part, with travertine used for the splashback to the barbecue in the alfresco. The bedroom wing is built in double brick, while the northern living area features more lightweight steel framing. “It breathes and cools down easily. It doesn’t hold heat which is good,” Adrian says. There is a separate deck off the master bedroom that, unlike the other decked areas, is not visible from the street. “It provides them with a really private space where they can sit and have a glass of wine at the end of the day and not be on display,” Adrian says. SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL Judith Barrett-Lennard combined contemporary and rustic elements when she designed a small studio apartment for herself at the back of her holiday home in Yanchep

NTERIOR designer Judith Barrett-Lennard’s “love affair with Yanchep” has been evolving for more than a decade. “Yanchep is so close to Perth and I’ve always loved going up on weekends,” says Judith. “Some of my friends used to live here, which was why I bought my first home about 12 years ago. More friends have bought homes near me since then. “There’s a very strong sense of community here. It’s like it used to be in the old days in Perth when there was always someone to have a coffee or glass of wine with.” After moving into her third home in “old Yanchep”, Judith decided to downsize and build an apartment at the back of her existing holiday house. “My family stay in the main house and the studio apartment is a place I keep just for me,” she says. “I designed it myself. It’s quite tiny, but it’s the perfect size for me personally and it’s so easy to look after.” Judith says she combined contemporary and rustic elements when designing her little piece of paradise. “It’s built out of vinyl weatherboards www.developwest.com.au and the terrace Contact David on 9431 8113, 0413 994 246 or email davidtims@rossnorthhomes.com.au

is supported by recycled electricity poles,” she says. “Because it faces due west, I chose window glass and curtains that have built-in UV-ray protection.” The studio has been outfitted with a kitchen, bathroom and one living/bedroom area. A curtain conceals Judith’s four-poster bed. “I’ve been very economical in the way I’ve fitted it out,” she says. “I brought a lot of pieces out of storage and gave them a new lease of life in this space.” Judith was also keen to “inject colour” into her small living quarters, which predominantly feature driftwood shades. “Tricia Edwards, who used to work with me and now has her own business called Design on Canvas, created the three pieces of art above the couch,” Judith says. “I love the banksia and grevillea shades she used. They work so beautifully up here.” Judith says she likes to feel connected to the local environment when spending time at her cottage. “I always have breakfast out on the terrace or down at the meditation area, which is at the bottom of my block,” she says. “The meditation area is just a few hundred yards from the beach and being able to swim in the lagoon is just divine.” The outdoor shower that’s attached to the
apartment is ideal for washing off the sand when Judith and her labradoodle puppy, Rover, return from the beach. Judith also put plenty of thought into her property’s landscape design. “I have a native garden at the front and a Mediterranean-style one at the rear. It’s the first time I’ve done a native garden,” she says. “I designed the gardens, but it was the local people who made it all happen.” Sandra Peterson

Before you head out to enjoy the great outdoors this summer, make sure you give any raised entertainment areas and balconies in your home some immediate attention, says Master Builders communications director Geoff Cooper.

A-Z BUILDING information ✱
Building a retaining wall isn’t as straightforward as it sounds, says Master Builders technical adviser Romina De Santis
R
ETAINING walls are not dividing fences and are subject to different legislative requirements. Retaining walls on boundaries must be wholly constructed inside the property, unless you have the consent of the adjoining landowner. It is a good idea to have the boundary line pegged by a licensed land surveyor to be sure the retaining wall or dividing fence is placed in the correct location. Retaining walls are only required when
a change in level is too much to slope soil between the higher and lower sides, or when site constraints require a level area up to a boundary. Which neighbour is responsible for installing retaining is sometimes difficult to determine. Often one owner will have lowered their site and the other filled theirs, causing the different heights at the boundary. Talk to your neighbour about how level differences might be resolved. Note that if you are removing the fence to install the retaining wall, you must consult with your neighbour. If you cause damage to the dividing fence, you must ensure it is repaired. There are a number of suitable materials for the construction of retaining walls, but some are better than others depending on the soil
type, the height of the retaining wall and if you are on the high or low side. Limestone retaining walls rely on their mass to provide support. A rule of thumb when considering limestone retaining is that the base will be at least half of the height and additional backing blocks are required behind the wall. An engineer is required to design a suitable retaining wall. Cavity-brick retaining walls do not require backing blocks, but may need a wide footing to provide strength to the wall. The most space-efficient choice is concrete panel and post-style retaining walls, but a structural engineer must confirm the suitability and design of retaining walls over 450mm in height, and a building permit is required from the local authority.

building supervisor. This can be done informally by a telephone call or conversation, but should be documented. If the matter remains unresolved after a reasonable period, a letter should be written to the builder outlining your concerns and requesting attention. If a variation to building work is to be made, this should be documented and signed by the builder and owner before work on the variation starts. This is in the interests of both parties. If a builder fails to respond to your written requests for attention to the defects, you can engage the services of a private building inspector to examine the work in progress and prepare a written report to present to the builder. The MBA offers a referral service to experienced and competent inspectors, phone: 9476 9800 for further information. Alternatively, you can contact the Building Commission (phone: 1300 489 099) to arrange for an inspector to examine the building work.
It should be pointed out that most building issues never reach an advanced stage of conflict resolution. Only about two out of every 100 homes constructed result in the issue of an order by the authorities.

It is important to note that the structure may not have been built correctly to start with, so if you have any doubt, have it inspected by a competent person such as a registered builder or structural engineer. With elevated areas, care must also be taken with balustrade safety. Ensure the balustrade has been installed correctly and fixed to the structural elements (i.e. wall or structural beams) and not superficially to the decking or floor. Wire balustrades lose their tension with time so tighten wires periodically to maintain the maximum 125mm spacing required where the floor is greater than one metre above the surface below.
You should also be aware that under many household insurance policies a balcony or deck collapse may not be an insured event, so owners could be hit by costly law suits where a failure causes damage to people or property. We have heard about a number of balcony failures both in WA and in other states, many resulting in serious injuries and some even death. Although overcrowding can be the cause of a failure, it is often due to lack of maintenance. Regardless of the reason for a balcony failure, ensuring balconies and decks are maintained and safe is the responsibility of the building owner. So protect yourself and visitors to your home and ensure your deck or balcony is safe. The Building Commission of WA has a great brochure, “Balconies and Decks – A Guide to Maintenance”, available on its website at www.buildingcommission.wa.gov.au.

attack. This timber must be replaced and termite inspection and treatment done to ensure the termites have not bridged into the home via the deck. ✱ Sagging boards/decking could be a sign of subfloor problems, so check the floor frame or look for warped boards and loose connections. ✱ Check connection points and fixings for
rigidity and evidence of corrosion or cracking and seek professional advice on how to remedy the situation. Seaside properties are particularly vulnerable. ✱ Keep treatments on timber to preserve and increase its lifespan. These products not only keep timber looking good, they also protect it from the weather, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended reapplication of your treatment of choice.
I am halfway through the construction of my new home and I have a few workmanship issues. However, I’m afraid that by “rocking the boat” with my builder I will receive poorer service during the remainder of my contract. What should I do? Just like when you buy a new car and defects occur, which are readily repaired, so it is with a new home. Unlike cars which are produced in a controlled factory environment, new homes are produced in open air by myriad subcontractors. The “degree of difficulty” is magnified accordingly. My point is that poor workmanship issues can occur and these should be immediately reported to your building supervisor or builder. Your builder is legally responsible for the structural integrity of your home. Even small problems should not be allowed to fester, but there is a recommended process you should follow to deal with your issues professionally and with common sense. Following these steps should enable you to have your builder address your concerns properly without any escalation of the problems.

HE winter and spring months may have taken their toll on your home’s outdoor decking or rails, resulting from pest damage, water rot, corrosion or other physical damage. Timber can fail for a number of reasons, including selecting incorrect timber in the first place (i.e. timber that’s not suitable for an external structure), poor maintenance or insect attack by european house borers or termites. Concrete balconies can also be affected by cracking, flaking or the corrosion of their reinforcements. However, if well maintained, they should generally last 40 to 50 years.

outdoor LIVING
STANDING OUT The alfresco is now a room to be furnished like any other and people are going for quality, colour and style in outdoor sofas, tables and chairs
W
E have the perfect climate to eat outside, drink outside, and relax and play outside pretty much all year round, so it’s not surprising that outdoor living areas are becoming more important than ever. “Outdoor living areas in recent years have been recognised as an extension of the indoor, considerably extending the available overall living area of the home,” says The Terrace Gardener’s Des Barbera. “The trend now is to treat the outdoor living area with the same importance as the indoor, creating comfortable, warm and aesthetically valuable spaces.” A well-designed garden is one where people want to relax and spend time, and furniture is a big part of this. Joel Bartfeld, Shine Group creative director and the man who came up with idea for SunnyLife, believes the outdoor area is the part of our home that is dedicated to having fun. “So, we are seeing a trend for vivid, bold colours and patterns,” Joel says. “People enjoy spending time in their outdoor spaces and are having fun and being quite playful with their design choices.” Increasingly, homeowners are favouring durable, versatile pieces of outdoor furniture that won’t need replacing in a few years time. “People want to be able to use their outdoors as an additional living and entertaining space,” Joel says. “So, if a product has an indoor and outdoor flexibility it’s more appealing. It’s all about getting the best value from your purchases.” According to Des, people want furniture that looks as good indoors as it does outdoors. “A fluid boundary between indoor and
outdoor is being created,” he says. “The outdoor dining table has been joined by outdoor lounges, benches and chairs to relax in; occasional tables and cafe tables are being accompanied by armchairs to form intimate spaces.” Jonathon Bull, owner and director of Contempo, agrees. “Australians are now investing in quality furniture that will stand the test of time,” he says. “The indoor/outdoor rooms are ever-present in Australian design, and therefore the furniture needs to suit the environment. Outdoor sofas are a sought-after luxury item and are becoming a must-have for all indoor/outdoor rooms.” For summer 2011/2012, Des is noticing a trend for quality outdoor furnishings in bright tones as well as classic blacks and whites. “Furnishings are no longer restricted to timber or flimsy plastics, but are made from
1
new polymers, giving greater range to shapes, colours and form as well as longevity,” he says. According to Andrew Thornton Hick, commercial manager at Ultimo Interiors, outdoor furniture finishes are moving away from stark contrasts and into the realm of softer, more site-specific finishes. “An awareness and indeed emphasis on complementing the environment into which they are placed is key,” Andrew says. “As such, bright bold colours are giving way to softer tones in cappuccino, taupe, camel and soft pastels. Adding warmth to this palette with timber pieces completes the look for summer 2012.” Lisa Shearon

READY, STEADY, SPLASH A plunge pool is an eco-friendly option that can be installed in your backyard and ready to use in no time at all, uses less water than a conventional pool and can be used all year round by adding a heater
I
NSTALLING a plunge pool is an ideal solution for homeowners looking for all the benefits of a pool without many of the inconveniences associated with the installation. Jackie Vincent, of Trinity Plunge Pools, the WA distributor for Australian Plunge Pools, says the pools are built off-site and arrive fully tiled, with coping, plumbing and other extras in place so they’re “ready to go”. “That’s the beauty of them,” she says. According to Jackie, the pools can be installed within a day, which means the owners can avoid eight weeks of messy earthworks in their backyard and can even be enjoying their new
purchase as soon as the next day or even that evening. This cuts down on the costs and time generally associated with smaller pool options. The concrete plunge pools are a “once in a lifetime” purchase and can be easily moved to another location. The trendy pools can also make a great, easy and affordable DIY project. Available in three diameter sizes – 2.4m, 2.7m and 3.45m – the pools are tiled with the buyer’s choice of glass mosaic tiles, classic sandstone coping and various waterline depths, ranging from 1.35m to 2.1m, depending on the size ordered. Jackie says they can even be used as feature
ponds. One of the plunge pools was featured in a gold medal-winning garden display at this year’s Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. Adding a heater will let you use it year-round. “Because of their size, you can use them all year round without taxing the earth,” says Jackie. Freshwater, chlorine-free pools are an option for those who want a healthier swimming experience, she adds. The ozone pools are filled with water that’s treated with a combination of ozone, hydrogen peroxide and UV light. Jackie says the water is healthy for the skin and creates a very relaxing experience.
“The water feels like silk,” she says. “You get a feeling of wellbeing when you’re in there. It’s just a different type of water to be in.” Jackie says a custom plunge pool is also a more eco-friendly option than a traditional pool, with the size resulting in decreased water usage and with excess water able to be used on the garden. outdoor LIVING
ALL FIRED UP Outdoor entertaining spaces are becoming a second cooking zone for the home, with the same hi-tech features as found in the modern Australian kitchen
A
S outdoor areas have changed over the last few years – transforming from low-key backyards into sophisticated entertaining spaces – so too has the way we cook outside. Barbecues, outdoor kitchens and pizza ovens have all become commonplace, complete with the same hi-tech features and cooking gadgets found in the modern Australian kitchen. Lyndon Craig, senior design manager at Electrolux, says barbecues in particular are changing to reflect the Australian way of life. “With outdoor entertaining being a quintessential part of the Australian lifestyle, the humble barbecue has evolved to deliver the same level of sophistication as we expect from our indoor kitchen appliances,” he says. Bunnings leisure buyer Cameron Rist says with extensive cooking options now available, outdoor entertaining areas are becoming a second kitchen for the home. “No one wants to be stuck in the kitchen when they can be enjoying the weather outdoors,” he says. As barbecues have become more sophisticated, so too have people’s methods of cooking. This has led, inevitably, to the rise of hooded and wood-fired ovens that are perfect for pizzas.
Outdoor areas may be increasing in sophistication, but they’re also shrinking in size. According to Black and Stone managing director Graham Brake, the demise of the big backyard has led to a shift in outdoor entertaining, with many people choosing smaller gas barbecues suitable for balconies or electric barbecues that can be stored when not in use. “The Aussie gas barbecue is great when you have space and it can stay put all year round. But the increasing number of people who are opting to rent, downsize or live in an apartment are choosing electric barbecues for ease of use, cleanliness and portability,” he says. “The latest design advancements mean electric barbecues perform better than ever before and this provides a genuine barbecue taste.” Lisa Shearon

HEAT TREATS According to Think Brick Australia, the very best pizza ovens are those built from brick. It’s easy to understand brick’s appeal when it comes to cooking. With impressive thermal-mass properties, brick captures two forms of heat: it channels heat from the fire directly on to food, and stores and reflects radiant heat. It’s this combination that allows food to be cooked evenly and helps brick ovens to reach temperatures of about 450C, making them ideal for cooking crispy pizza, tender roasted meats and perfectly turned-out pastries, breads and cakes.

TIMBER TOPS Pot Mango imports distinctive furniture made from mango and tamarind wood that can be coloured to suit your decor unusual grey finish, are also popular with her customers. She says that both woods can be stained in four different colours. While many people love the natural look, some customers choose a walnut finish to match with jarrah items in their home, or black and grey to give a more contemporary look. Teak-root pots, shaped around their natural flaws to maintain the character of the wood, pepper the store. “Each piece is different,” Diana says. She directly imports products from about 40 different suppliers in Java. “I travel there two or three times a year to meet with my suppliers,,” she says. She says her suppliers are highly skilled craftsmen and that she takes great care in providing quality products, including liaising with a Java-based colleague who checks on each item before it is shipped. Diana says she actively avoids what she calls
the “typical Balinese rustic look” furniture because many shops in Australia are already supplying that. Instead, she aims to deliver something unique. “We’re trying to provide people with a collection of very distinctive and unusual decor,” she says. According to Diana, customers often bring in photos of something they like, make changes to existing designs in the shop or describe something specific they are chasing to match an existing theme in their home. “We’re now starting to see the results in the store of the feedback given by customers since we opened,” she says. Diana says one of her favourite products, the copper-wall water features, can be customdesigned for any backyard. She also takes design requests for the copper wall art, which is often bought to match the water features. Kristy Symonds

FTER owning a modest shop in Malaga for a year, Pot Mango owner Diana Scarfe’s love of beautiful mango-wood furniture recently drove her to seek out bigger and better premises to sell her wares. Having now relocated Pot Mango to a spacious showroom in Wangara, Diana and her husband, Bob, have been able to expand their range of home and garden decor to include even more stunning pieces of furniture made from mango wood, as well as some items made from tamarind wood, plus a larger selection of decorative pots, sculptures, water features and lamps. “We had a much smaller range (before), but what we really wanted to showcase was the mango wood,” Diana says. The mango-wood furniture includes tables, chairs and chests of drawers. Diana says the striking natural-edged tables made from tamarind wood, available in an

There are six steps to success for gardeners in WA to deal with our stinking hot summers and high levels of wind

before our draw-down started emptying them. That is highly unlikely to be achieved this year, so conservation is more important this summer than ever. ✱ We are in the middle of a 30-plus year drying period that isn’t predicted to stop. ✱ Our soils are not soils. With few exceptions, the sands most Perthites garden in are almost equivalent to hydroponic mediums, allowing moisture and nutrient to flood through the soil at a rate that is too fast for the plants’ roots to absorb them. This means if you feed your plants too much or if you water
For a start, our current water situation demands we establish a garden in a water-efficient manner. If you are thinking we had good rainfall over the winter and spring period, consider these facts:
them too much, the majority of what you apply passes by their root systems, which are usually just a few hundred millimetres under the soil’s surface and are effectively wasted. A by-product of excessive watering and fertilising is the algal blooms that cause the environmental destruction we see in the Swan and Canning rivers. Our summers are so hot that many plants shut up shop and stop growing, aiming just to survive. Many West Australian plants will survive this extreme well, making them something you should consider carefully when establishing a new garden. Our famous easterly breezes that howl in from the desert in the mornings dry everything out before abating to allow the afternoon blast from the Fremantle Doctor to cool everything down. This high level of wind from both the west and east dries the soil and forces plants to transpire moisture from their foliage at a rapid rate. Large foliage plants often suffer the worst in these conditions because their roots simply can’t draw enough moisture to their leaves fast enough. So with all this in mind you might think this place is a garden tragedy waiting to happen, but it doesn’t have to be. Instead, it’s an opportunity unlike few others to have an incredibly diverse and interesting garden that is not just enjoyable to walk through or look at but also productive as well. Don Burke once told me he thought WA had Australia’s best gardens and his logic wasn’t so much about us Sandgropers being incredibly talented horticulturists, but more about the fact we have to learn about and understand our environment before we garden if we want to have a nice yard. The fact there are so many nice gardens speaks volumes about our ability to adapt to this challenging environment.

C PI LY ON
T’S important to make sure you apply local logic to maintaining or building a garden in WA this summer. If you don your Sandgroper T-shirt and abandon any thoughts or ideas from books that refer to or rely on English or North American gardening practices, you will be starting with the right foundation. You see, there’s very little advice from these sources that will lead to success here and the primary reason is our environment is unlike anywhere else in the world.

✱ The rainfall we had this year is actually less than the long-term average which, incidentally, hasn’t been achieved for many years. ✱ It was less than average after one of the driest ever years before, meaning our environment is under considerable stress. ✱ Our dam inflows from rainfall are also at record lows. While at the time of writing this article, dams were at 35 per cent capacity, the inflow stream was flattening out. The problem with this is that it’s at the lowest point of any year with only 2007 being comparable. That year run-off was very good, though, and our dams ended up at 42 per cent capacity

The Garden Guru to the rescue
Gwen Murphy, via email, has fallen in love with capers after buying a jar on a recent trip to South Australia and wants to know if she can grow them in Quindalup? Yes. The caper bush is a bit slow initially, but will grow very well in WA producing thousands of the tiny capers you like. The last time I managed to get a plant it was from Herbs ’R’ Us, which has some unusual edible plants and herbs on its list. The Diggers Club may be another option.

So what are the tricks?
Alan Webb, of Wonthella, in Geraldton, asks about a source for babaco seeds. Sorry, Alan. This is a hybrid plant that that doesn't produce viable seeds, but it does grow readily from cuttings. You can source plants from companies such as The Diggerss Club and ch offer Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery, which ots for mail-order plants in 175mm pots

CHOOSE WATERWISE PLANTS
1. Build your soil up with a rich, organic soil conditioner before planting. In water-repellent, barren sandy soils, add a clay amendment such as Soil Solver that changes the soil’s structure from sand to loam. The change is permanent. 2. Use drought-hardy grasses such as Empire zoysia or Village Green kikuyu. Both require less water and maintenance than traditional grass varieties to look great all year round in Perth.
4. Plant trees and shrubs that are best suited for WA’s unique environment. Check out plants for WA on the Water Corporation’s website. There are more than 1000 different plants to choose from. 5. Install a waterwise irrigation system. This may mean retrofitting your existing system with a modern pop-up stream throw sprinkler or adding soil and rain sensors that allow your controller to come on only when your plants need the moisture. 6. Mulch your garden heavily with a chunky open mulch that is ideally an Australian Standardsapproved mixture. This will shade
the soil, reducing the surface heating up and drying out, while allowing what water is available to soak into the soil quickly, reducing evaporation. That’s it, the six steps to success that may only be surpassed by the advice to seek out a waterwise specialist to provide you with the right direction in the beginning.
Picture: iStockphoto.com/mills21
3. Plant medium-sized trees and large shrubs densely around the outside edges of your garden. They create a wind baffle and increase humidity. This reduces water demands of the plants within the garden.
Waterwise plants are perfectly adapted to our climate, and need a lot less water to survive. Visit watercorporation.com.au to find plants best suited to your region in the Waterwise Plants for WA database, as well as lots more ways to target every drop in your garden.
If you do this you will end up with a beautiful garden. It’s actually not hard and by following these steps you can enjoy a great sense of satisfaction. Trevor Cochrane HOME

The musician, director of North Street Music and one of the founding members of string quartet Bond shows Kristy Symonds her favourites Instruments These are my electric and classical violas. Basically, if the house burnt down, my viola would be the first thing I took. It’s literally been with me through every part of my life and has probably given me the most pleasurable memories of outstanding concerts that I’ve performed at – whether it’s been onstage with Andrea Bocelli or Il Divo or the symphony orchestra. My viola was one of the first electric instruments that Yamaha made and it was made for me when I played in Bond. 2 War of the Worlds itinerary This was a major international touring arena show. I met my boyfriend, Gaëtan, on that tour. I first played in the tour in 2007 and have been to Europe with it since. 3 Plenty by Yotam Ottolenghi This cookbook is full of amazing vegetarian recipes. I am a hugely passionate cook and will cook three times a day if I’m given the opportunity. I very rarely make a sandwich – I always cook every meal.Whether I am baking cookies between meetings or something else, I seem to find time. It’s my therapy and I absolutely love food. 4 Kindle Because I travel so much, being able to carry around one slim book that has thousands of novels in it is absolutely perfect for me. In the past year, I have commuted to England and Florida every two months to see Gaëtan and have read probably about 40 books. 5 Glastonbury 2011 performance pass We were performing on the Spirit of 71 stage and we were called Bourbyliscious
and Naughty G. We were doing an electronic dance act with an electronic violin. It was a bit wild. Gaëtan has gone and performed at Glastonbury many times, but this was my first year. The festival is amazing and just the biggest music event that I’ve ever been a part of.

Portrait of my mum, my sister and me I am ridiculously close to my
family. My sister and my mum and dad have come out from England to Perth for Symphony by the Bay today. 7 My niece Ruby is 15 months old and I absolutely adore her. I talk to her on Skype maybe twice a week. Her first words were “Bee-baw” because she can’t say Bourby. 8 MBA from UWA I started life as a viola player so the thought of one day ever being a businesswoman was so far from my mind when I was younger. Achieving my MBA in 2005 just showed how far I’d come. That is partly the reason we’re holding Symphony by the Bay at UWA. 9 Rowing medals For over a decade, I competed both nationally and internationally as a coxswain. I still love being on or near water and actually miss early mornings rowing among the dolphins on a glass river. It’s absolutely beautiful. 10 Car It’s a little Mazda MX5 from 1989. She’s a convertible and I’ve never ever enjoyed owning a car until I owned her. She was an impulse buy and one I’ve never regretted.
