ATERSIDE living doesn’t get much better than the Leftbank by Webb & BrownNeaves. Set on the edge of a canal in Dudley Park in Mandurah, this twostorey showcase has been designed to soak up a fabulous view from the back of a block. “It’s a question of working out how many living spaces you can get to enjoy that aspect, whether it’s a canal, the ocean, a golf course or a lake,” says Rob Crawford, sales manager at Webb & Brown-Neaves. The W&B designers have certainly made sure the view from the Leftbank can be enjoyed as much as possible. Downstairs, the kitchen, dining, family room and alfresco all look out across the pool to the canal. Even the sunken home theatre enjoys a watery aspect thanks to large glass panels either side of the television. “In most instances, a home theatre for a lot of people is just a big TV so they don’t always need a darkened room,” Rob says. “When you’re

watching television it’s fantastic to be able to look through the back of the home, over the pool out to the canal.” The design of the theatre room also reflects demand from many buyers for spaces that can serve more than one purpose depending on needs and lifestyle. “That theatre room could become a dining room with a view for someone who entertains a lot and wants a formal dining space. It doesn’t have to be a theatre,” Rob says. The kitchen, which wraps around in an L-shape towards the laundry, illustrates a minimalist look with sleek cabinetry and a split-level island bench. Rob says the kitchen layout means the prep area around the corner becomes the main workspace, while the island bench is “all about the show”. Stone benchtops, stone splashbacks, a multifunction wall oven and a microwave combi oven are included in the display version of the Leftbank, which comes in at just over $650,000. Named after the iconic East Fremantle watering hole the Left Bank, W&B’s own waterside landmark also offers fabulous spaces
for relaxation and entertainment with a large alfresco and a big balcony. There’s a downstairs guest suite that Rob says is appealing to forward-thinking buyers who are buying into a dream location but realise a two-storey home may not be the most practical choice down the track. For seniors who don’t want to have to worry about stairs, the guest suite offers the ideal set up and enables them to stay in the home and location they love. “The downstairs bedroom with full ensuite means they can stay where they are and stay on one level,” Rob says. “You pay a lot of money for views, regardless of what they are, so you want to maximise your opportunity to enjoy that view at all points.” When it comes to the upper level layout, Rob says there are two schools of thought as to whether the master suite or a second living area should take in the view. The Leftbank cleverly caters for both preferences. “We designed the upper floor so that the living area and the master bedroom are interchangeable,” Rob says. While the home has been displayed with an upstairs lounge looking out to the water, it’s

an easy swap to move the master bedroom to the rear instead. The change does not alter the price of the home and means buyers can make their own mind up as to how best to enjoy the view from upstairs. market PLACE
The Switcheight300 – the newest display launched by Switch Homes for Living – is practically two homes in one, making it ideal for those intending to share accommodation
S
WITCH Homes for Living’s latest display home was designed to suit buyers with unusual living circumstances, including multi-generational households and people who have pooled their resources to get a foot on the property ladder. The builder’s new Switcheight300 display was deliberately designed “outside the square” to include two separate living zones that are linked by the kitchen and alfresco area. Switch Homes for Living’s sales and marketing manager Lee Morris says the home’s functionality is its greatest drawcard, particularly for families, couples living with ageing parents or adult children, and co-buyers who are sharing the dwelling. “Living conditions are changing. More people are buying homes with siblings or friends as a way of entering the market or families are cohabiting with elderly parents so we’ve designed a home that feels like two homes in one,” Lee says. “We’ve also designed this home to maximise space, which is a valuable commodity for any homebuyer. The home is equipped with in-built storage, which means there’s no compromise on style, you’re not sacrificing living space for furnishings for storage and it has great on-sale value as more and more buyers are factoring in storage as a priority.” Other impressive features include the
HOME
face-brick exterior with contemporary tiling and broad windows. The glazed front door opens to one of the open-plan living areas. From here glass sliding doors open to the central alfresco. The master suite is also at the front of the home and has a bright, modern ensuite with twin basins, large windows and feature tiling. It also has a big walk-in robe. Glazed doors in the main bedroom open to a private porch. The three other bedrooms are accessed from a central living room in the rear wing, which also opens to a courtyard, further promoting the home’s ability to accommodate independent shared living. ✱ The Switcheight300 is on display at Pallarup Cres, Lexia Estate, Ellenbrook. expert ADVICE
Smaller luxury homes with multipurpose rooms will be the choice of retirees and those seeking to downsize, says Ross Griffin Homes designer Yaros Gilenko
E
VERYONE is talking about the first baby boomers and how they’ve started to retire. Well, my friends and I are part of that set. We’re in our 50s now, but we’ve still got a lot of living and earning to do before we retire! We’ve had a decade of massive prosperity where we made money, built huge homes and raised our families. Then four years ago along came the GFC and ruined the party. We had all mortgaged up and used the equity in our big homes to pay the school fees and buy the toys. We’ve been accustomed to a pretty fantastic lifestyle. Now the equity we used in our homes to have that lifestyle has diminished and we’re faced with a couple of clear options when we go to build our next home. We can mortgage up further and continue to live in a big house, but most of us are running out of work years – we’ve got a decade or so left and after what we’ve seen the property market do in the past few years, we’re not sure how much growth we’ll see in our property’s value. The second option is we can build a smaller house. We’re not willing to compromise on quality, but quantity is negotiable. It is my opinion that in the next five to 10 years we’ll
see an explosion in the creation of smaller, luxury homes – apartment-style living, but not apartments. Our priorities are freedom and luxury. Freedom from debt means the ability to enjoy our lifestyle, but we don’t want to compromise on luxury. We want a “lock-up-and-leave” home because we love to travel and the strong Aussie dollar makes it irresistible – that’s our freedom. But we still want our big indoor/outdoor open-plan living area because we love cooking and entertaining. We want our homes to feel like the fine hotels we stay in around the world – that’s our luxury. So these days I’m reducing floor plans and including more luxury specifications so that the dollars add up and there is plenty left over for the lifestyle we lead. Blocks are getting smaller (urban infill is all about subdividing existing blocks) so the land you have to start with already lends itself to a smarter, more efficient design. The reality is that the big houses have a lot of space, but the question is who needs all this space? At our age and stage, who needs special purpose rooms such as home theatres and games rooms? Who needs a study? We need
beautifully specified, well-proportioned, multipurpose rooms. Multipurpose so that when it is just the two of us or we’re flying solo, we can spread out or close off areas. Multipurpose so that when the kids bounce back home for a month or a year we can fit them back in without feeling like we’re treading on each other’s toes. Multipurpose so that the home has the broadest market appeal when the time comes to sell it. We’re past following fads. We need stunning, neutral contemporary finishes that won’t look obsolete in five years and can form the backdrop for the artwork we’ve accumulated. The kids have grown so we can have our white leather couches and red wine together now. I’m going to have my red wine and drink it, too (I prefer it to cake). If we can take one lesson away from the past few years, it is surely that bigger is not always best. Just as cars are trending down in size as gas guzzlers become a bit embarrassing in this new age of efficiency, so too a well-designed, efficient home with a smaller footprint will soon become the model we aspire to. Fewer bedrooms, more trips to Bali and coming home to your own luxury oasis – surely this sounds as attractive to you as it does to me.

Low-rise maisonette and terrace-style developments – as opposed to high-rise apartment blocks – are seen as the solution to challenges posed by increased migration and the shortage of land

Matterhorn | $259,090
S WA’s population growth continues to outpace land and housing supply, Aspen Living CEO Brendan Acott is predicting that low-rise maisonette and terrace-style living may be the next major trend in our state’s residential development. Growing in popularity around the world, maisonette apartments are usually two or three storeys high and can easily be built in a variety of attractive styles. Brendan says they are suitable for a range of residential-lot types, particularly corner lots or lots with rear laneways. He is confident they could successfully increase urban density and affordability, without competing head-on with their more expensive counterparts – high-rise apartment blocks. “Considering our ageing population, increased migration and pressure on land supply, there is a general acceptance among government decision-makers, particularly at

a state level and more recently at the local authority level, that appropriate increases to density are or will become the norm,” he says. “A little over 12 months ago the WA Planning Commission released a revised policy on multiple dwellings, which has seen minimum lot sizes for multiple dwellings disappear. “This paves the way for more innovative development and I think that maisonettestyle developments and terrace housing may provide the answer. “They are perfect for single professionals, young couples and first-time property investors who want to get a foot in the door of the property market, or for retirees who want to downsize and free up some of their assets while remaining in a well-established area.” Brendan says there’s no doubt that a more dense form of development is becoming generally more acceptable to the WA community, but the greatest challenge is for developers and
Ocean Vista | $323,325
builders to make it more affordable and ensure a high standard of build quality. Multistorey developments have traditionally been more expensive to build for a range of reasons, primarily related to their size and complexity. The solution, Brendan says, may lie in land developers, builders and government working closely to develop a series of standard lot sizes to facilitate the development of maisonette and terrace-style dwellings. “We need to shift away from the idea that every home needs to be unique and come up with innovative ways to construct higher density dwellings that represent value for money, provide appropriate built form outcomes and provide a real alternative that’s in tune with our modern-day needs,” he says. “We are blessed to have some of the best and most innovative residential builders and developers in the country to facilitate this.”

BLOCK? NEED ADVICE? CALL US NOW... Developing a duplex or triplex isn’t complex when you enjoy the Developwest D experience.
OOKING for a single-storey home with all the design flair and fabulous finishes of a luxury two-storey? Cue the Arcadia, the debut display from Vision One Homes. On display in Southern River, this four-bedroom stunner demonstrates what we can come to expect from Vision One, the sister company of award-winning Novus Homes. “We’ve translated the knowledge we’ve gained from Novus over the years and put it into the Vision One display,” says Steve Summers, senior design and building consultant at Vision One. Steve says Vision One provides the answer to the question that many buyers ask themselves: “Where can we find a single-storey house that’s fitted out to the standard of a beautiful two-storey house?” Appealing to “demolish-and-build” buyers as well as those moving into a new development, the Arcadia offers an impressive line-up of features for those with just over $340,000 to spend. Proving that a great looking home is often a harmonious

blend of many subtle details, it includes a floating ceiling and glass splashback in the kitchen, projecting bulkheads to the theatre, dining room and living room, deco-style internal doors and a cedar-lined ceiling to the porch. The presentation is silky smooth and there is a sense that this is very much a lifestyle residence where style and comfort go hand in hand. “Where many builders would stop and think they’re finished, we’re going that bit further. You can see it and you can feel it,” Steve says. With its optional tiled detailing and modern appeal, the Arcadia’s front elevation has proved to be a real winner, Steve says. Inside, living spaces are light and well proportioned, the bedrooms are a generous size, the kitchen is sleek and sculptural, and the bathrooms take their cues from luxury resorts. “The Vision One philosophy is to provide something that is unique and to go that extra mile,” Steve says. This certainly seems to be the case when it comes to outdoor living. Vision One has
used stacker doors to open the kitchen and living space out to a sensational alfresco and adjoining outdoor entertaining area. “The integration between the alfresco space and the kitchen and family space is about as good as you’re going to see,” Steve says. “And the outdoor space is big. There’s a barbecue area and a gas fire and space for a lounge as well as a dining table.” There’s plenty of detail in the main kitchen with its high-spec cabinetry, stone benchtops, Smeg appliances, walk-in pantry and designer island bench and an integrated breakfast bar. It’s the same story in the ensuite where a freestanding bath and sleek cabinetry are the stars of the show. Specialising in individually designed singlestorey homes, Vision One is also expanding its collection of display homes and off-theplan designs to provide buyers with a range of ready-to-go options. “Vision One has a style of its own and if you like our style, it can be applied to any of the homes in our portfolio,” Steve says. The company also offers a streamlined version of the Arcadia from $219,300. Paula Evans

BOLD FRONT
D
ISPLAYED on a good-sized block that faces north to the front, the Willows by Dale Alcock Homes is a light-filled, climate-sensible home tailor-made for family and entertaining. With a minimum 6-star energy rating becoming mandatory for new homes from May, the Willows is certainly worth a look if you’re faced with the prospect of a less than perfect orientation. “We’ve also had a spate of inquiries from people who have a block that’s opposite a park,” says Cameron Lade, sales and marketing manager at Dale Alcock Homes. Adding a front-living design to the Dale Alcock portfolio, the Willows is perfect for 17.5m-wide blocks but can be adapted to suit narrower sites. Throw open the doors from the front-facing living room to the veranda and you not only immediately bring the outdoors in but you also have a shady spot from which to enjoy the neighbourhood. This is a great feature for many of the new estates where developers are promoting a stronger sense of community and verandas are encouraged. While the Willows is a departure from the floor plans we’re used to, the builder has been conscious that flexibility is a must. “The Willows is certainly not your traditional layout, that’s for sure, but we do offer a traditional version of this home where the home theatre is at the front,” Cameron says.
The rest of the floor plan effectively stays the same. As with all Dale Alcock designs, the builder has provided several other easy options, including the ability to leave out the sliding doors from the theatre room to the alfresco and create a dedicated home cinema. Organisational features such as drop-zones, e-zones and plenty of storage are also a priority for the Dale Alcock design team, along with relaxation in the form of a fabulous master suite, and entertainment in the shape of free-form living spaces and bigger-than-ever alfresco areas. In the Willows, the column-free corner that’s part of the stacking door system makes for a seamless link between the kitchen and dining room and the double-sized alfresco. “This home is very open and spacious – that’s the aim of the design,” Cameron says. The builder has pulled out all stops to show what can be done with backyard space, displaying the Willows with no less than three outdoor “rooms” in addition to the alfresco. There’s a separate pavilion to shade the barbecue, a deck and hanging chair at the top of the garden and a lounge set up off the master suite. The designers have also gone to town on the kitchen design. There’s a split-level, stonetopped island bench with breakfast bar, lots of storage, a generous larder-style pantry, double ovens, a 900mm cooktop, an integrated range
WILLOWS hood, microwave recess, under-mounted sink, water filter system and glass splashback. A narrow section of workbench and skinny cupboards form a drop-zone for keys and phones as you come into the kitchen from the garage and laundry, while a glass panel on the wall is the perfect place for scribbled notes, reminders and shopping lists. When it comes to zoning, the builder has consciously decided to put all four bedrooms in the same wing, with little separation between the master suite and the kids’ quarters. “It was a deliberate decision,” Cameron says. “A lot of parents want to be close to the kids’ bedrooms when the kids are smaller.” The builder is billing the facade of the Willows, which can be built from $241,749, as “urban eco”, teaming a trio of limestonelook piers with rendered walls and a tiled roof. “It’s a fresh take on urban design,” Cameron says. The timber-decked veranda is 2.4m deep, providing ample room for several chairs, and it sits nicely into the roofline for a smooth, seamless look. Paula Evans

O you always find yourself in the kitchen at parties? Not surprising if the kitchen in question is anything like the kitchen in the Majestic by Impressions the Home Builder. The built-in wine rack means there’s always a favourite drop of red or white to hand, while the wide, stainless steel oven is perfect for cooking up a summer feast. Very much the focal point of the living and entertaining area in this Landsdale display home, the kitchen design combines two-tone gloss cabinetry with a Corian benchtop. The designers have made a feature of the long breakfast bar, using a 300mm overhang and have opted for a sleek contemporary look featuring pot drawers, a double-door pantry, overhead cupboards, a wide glass-topped range hood and a wide cooktop. By choosing a U-shaped design they have ensured that there’s plenty of room to move and that the kitchen still relates well to the living area and alfresco. “A key design factor in creating functionality and flow from indoor to outdoor entertaining areas is an accessible kitchen,” says Emily Cattanach, marketing co-ordinator at Impressions. “The Majestic has been carefully designed with a central kitchen, making entertaining a breeze.”
HOME
Stacker doors lead out from the free-form living area to the alfresco, where Impressions has added timber decking and lined the ceiling with Glosswood. “Most buyers in today’s market are looking for an impressive indoor/outdoor area to complement our warm WA climate,” Emily says. “This spacious alfresco will be the perfect sanctuary for your summer barbecue and is sure to be a favourite spot to gather with family and friends.” Emily says paying attention to the home’s orientation has made the outdoor room even more comfortable and has helped the home achieve an 8.5-star energy rating. The Majestic, which can be built from $167,435, has been designed to suit a narrow lot. At just under 11m wide, it boasts a feeling of space and openness that belies its slim proportions. “The Majestic was designed with the intention of showcasing that style and luxury do not need to be compromised when building on a block with a narrow frontage,” Emily says. The master suite, with its big, fitted wardrobe and chic ensuite, has been placed at the back of the home, away from noise and traffic. By creating a small foyer off the living space, the designers have added an extra element of privacy to the main bedroom.
Three more double bedrooms, each with built-in wardrobes, have been grouped together in the front half of the home. There are twin vanities in the second bathroom and a separate powder room. High ceilings in the living areas and hallway accentuate the feeling of space in the Majestic, while a coffered ceiling in the home theatre adds to the ambience of this second entertaining area. An angled roof over the front porch sets off the light-coloured rendered walls, big feature front door, negative detailing and sections of weatherboard panelling to give the Majestic instant street appeal. COURTING FAVOUR It has been around for thousands of years, but the courtyard home is gaining ground in Australia only now and the Fratelle Group is taking steps to show that it is the best form of design to suit environmental conditions here
E
IGHT thousand years since its inception, the courtyard house remains one of architecture’s most enduring designs. They may be synonymous with China, but courtyard houses – which, as the name suggests, are dwellings built around a central courtyard – can be traced back to the Jordan Valley near the present-day West Bank. The style, though relatively simple in principle, has survived time and trends and knows no cultural bounds. It’s revered from India to Africa. It can be used in an opulent sense, as demonstrated by Chinese palaces or as a penny-pinching device, as shown by the low-cost housing developments in Morocco. Courtyard houses can even be created as a strategic way of dealing with the multiple problems presented by an arid environment, as seen in the Gulf. Courtyard houses are particularly suited to the Australian climate and Adrian Fratelle of Fratelle Group laments the fact that the style is only now gaining momentum here. With a country that has traditionally placed onus on the quarter-acre dream, complete with a buffalo-lawn-laden backyard and Hills hoist, courtyard houses have simply been overlooked. On top of that, Adrian says, much of our architecture has originated from England when
terrace housing and bungalows were the trend. “Such housing was efficient to build, requiring minimal materials to construct, however they were not efficient to run, especially in our climate of extremes,” he says. “But courtyard homes are a much better fit for our harsh environment. A well-designed courtyard home is not only efficient at keeping out the heat, it can also block cold winter winds and allow the winter sun to penetrate into more of the home.” Adrian says one of the major benefits of the courtyard-inspired home is cross-ventilation. “It’s easy to open up the house and get a lot of air through it. Aside from that, the style offers unparalleled privacy and security,” he says. Fratelle Group recently completed a design for a courtyard home in Ellenbrook’s Malvern Springs. Adrian says the clients were instantly sold on the idea. “The clients came to us wanting a solarpassive designed home, and we put forward a design based on Asian courtyard design principles. They were very impressed by the benefits,” he says. “They loved the ability to get northern light into their living areas and, because they’ve got small children, the idea of a central courtyard area that is private, safe and visible from most areas of the house was very appealing.”
A recently completed design for a courtyard home in Ellenbrook’s Malvern Springs by the Fratelle Group. Pictures: Supplied
HOME
The home was built on a north-facing site, which usually proves problematic for architects and building designers. “It is difficult to design a home with living areas that face north, which are also private,” he says. “Generally, with a block like that, you’d put the living areas at the front of the house, but then they’re exposed to the streetscape. It’s not ideal for most people. “The courtyard design was a perfect solution. It’s like a C-shape, so the living rooms are across the back of the block, the bedrooms are down the side and the garage, theatre and master bedroom are at the front.”
Being on the western side, the bedrooms cop the brunt of the sun so Fratelle pushed the robes out to this elevation, effectively increasing the thermal barrier. All the bedrooms have sliding entry doors and above those doors are panels with louvres to capture the evening breeze. At the back Adrian designed a skillion roof in order to maximise the amount of sunlight in the dining and living areas. This solar gain is particularly valuable in winter, he says. “There are solar panels and wind pods generating electricity for the home, as well as solar water heating,” Adrian says.

ITH buildings consuming 32 per cent of the world’s resources, 12 per cent of its water and 40 per cent of the energy, and being responsible for creating 40 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions and 40 per cent of waste that goes into landfill, it stands to reason that they would cop some measures to curb this impact. As governments close in to achieve emissions targets, buildings are clearly in their sights. Following passive-solar design principles such as good orientation – including thermal mass and insulation, providing cross-ventilation and reducing air leakage – helps to reduce green house gas emissions. We can further improve a building’s energy efficiency by opening and closing blinds and

curtains at suitable times and using efficient lighting and appliances. Buildings are unique. Each home or commercial building will have its own set of components, depending on the selections of the client, the location of the building and the work methods of the contractors who put the building together. The environmental impact of a building should have a measure that includes more than just its running costs. The energy used to produce the materials from natural resources, the transportation costs from where the materials are manufactured to the site and then the energy used to construct the building as it stands today (plus its maintenance regime) all factor in to what is known as the building’s embodied energy. The lifecycle of manufactured products is much less complicated when compared with the construction of a building. Appliances, computers and vehicles are made in production lines and although the materials and components may be sourced from a range of raw materials and from other countries, the cost of production can be quite accurately calculated and any variables easily accounted for. Unlike vehicles and computers, buildings have a much longer life span and are not recycled as readily. In the past five years there has been a big shift

in the way construction and demolition sites are managed for waste. More and more materials are reused and recycled, including bricks, concrete, metal off-cuts and plasterboard. As landfill costs continue to rise, we are becoming more efficient when ordering materials and conscious about generating waste that cannot be reused or recycled. And this brings us to a point for everyone to be aware of. Bins on construction sites should not be used for household waste. Doing this affects the industry’s good work in reducing waste and the overall energy cost in a building.

designing their new homes in accordance with the new 6-star energy rating standards. It will be important for all builders to gear up for this change well before May. To assist the housing industry meet its new 6-star requirements, Master Builders has engaged two reputable energy assessors to carry out and advise builders on the compliance. With the introduction of 6-star energy ratings, new homes will become even more energy efficient than the vast majority of established homes, which means a saving on your electricity bills, a more comfortable home to live in and the satisfaction of knowing you are doing your bit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
I have received a letter from my insurer to say that the claim I made for my collapsed dining room ceiling has been refused. When I called them to discuss the issue, I was told the ceiling fixings failed and this was not covered. I don’t understand why, because someone I know recently claimed for a ceiling collapse when their airconditioner broke and leaked into the roof, causing the ceiling to collapse – and they were covered for the airconditioner and the ceiling! Your building insurance covers loss due to a single event such as a storm or fusion. The difference with your claim is that the ceiling collapsed due to a lack of maintenance. Unfortunately, with older ceilings that were heavier and fixed differently to new ones, it’s possible that the fixing does deteriorate over time and ceilings fall in. Reports suggest that there may be 300,000 WA homes that have used straps in the ceiling that can perish and cause them to collapse. This strapping was commonly used until the 1970s. Unlike other parts of your home that give you visual cues (such as flaking paint or rusting gutters), you generally do not get up into your roof space and check the lagging of your ceiling. You may notice cracks or sagging in the ceiling, but you may not get this warning sign. An experienced contractor can tell when a ceiling is failing. Had your ceiling collapsed after a storm, because water entered your roof or due to an earth tremor, the insurance company may well have covered your claim, even if the ceiling was weakened by age.

LL governments across Australia have come to the conclusion that the building industry has an important role to play in reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions by the owners or occupants of dwellings. The simple and collective strategy agreed on to achieve this objective is to require all new homes to comply with a minimum standard of energy efficiency than is already in place. The measure used is a star rating and in WA, from May 1, all new homes will need to have a rating of 6 stars (up from the 5-plus star rating that has been in place for a few years). One way of obtaining a 6-star energy rating will be for builders to engage a qualified energy assessor to ensure their designs for any new homes and additions to existing homes meet the mandatory minimum standards. If they don’t, they will need to make changes to the design in order to obtain a building permit. Homebuyers need to understand the process and liaise with their builder to achieve the desired outcome. The earlier in the design process you start working to achieve a 6-star

INNOVATIVE MIX A mixture of different materials, including weathered zinc cladding, Turkish fossil marble floors and american oak doors, has given this South Perth home a look that exceeded all expectations
T
HIS South Perth home is a prime example of innovation at its best. Frank Davidoff, of Time Builders, surmounted the challenging task of following a complex design brief to build a distinctive home where contrasting textures worked together to create warm, open spaces. Panels of weathered zinc cladding are complemented by aluminium screening and glass to achieve a contemporary structure with sharp, clean lines. These industrial-type materials are juxtaposed with the external timber decking and professional landscaping that add lush, natural highlights to the home’s crisp white and grey exterior. Inside, the house was designed to provide plenty of light and space and freedom for the owners to showcase their extensive art collection and also to entertain. Frank says the owners were especially happy with the Turkish fossil marble flooring throughout the entrance and living spaces, as it creates a very natural feel. “You can actually see the shells of fossils in the marble and each floor tile is unique,” he says. High ceilings, long, white walls and expansive windows combine to make the open-plan living area feel spacious and inviting.
HOME
As well as overlooking the alfresco area, which also features timber decking, the living areas are positioned to take advantage of stunning city views. The alfresco area is framed by off-form concrete columns. Its glass balustrades provide unobstructed views of the rectangular swimming pool. Again, the combination of timber, concrete and water create a stunning contrast between the natural and industrial textures that define this design. “The whole house is a mixture of different materials and products,” Frank says. For Frank, the american oak door frames and doors throughout the house are another of the home’s highlights. The luxurious master suite is upstairs and has a private balcony, which allows the occupants to enjoy views of the city and the Swan River. The bathrooms feature bigger slabs of the same fossil marble used downstairs. The upper floor also has another bedroom with an ensuite, as well as an activity room that can function as a third bedroom, if required. “With the owners’ children grown up, the house has more of an adult design,” Frank says. The real challenge in completing the project was the process of digging out and entirely
replacing the site’s clay soil before building could commence. After that, Frank says, the home was completed without any problems and exceeded even the owners’ expectations. “They knew what they wanted,” he says. “But I think even they were surprised at how well all the materials came together.” Kate Dromey The design features a stunning contrast between natural and industrial textures. COLLECTOR’S COLLECTION Artist and sculptor Tony Jones has a vast array of other people’s artworks that he has been collecting since he was a child
L
OCAL artist Tony Jones’s impressive East Fremantle residence is almost a century old and houses a “lifetime’s collection” of artworks. Tony, who lives there with his wife, Pam, says it would be near-impossible for them to move out of the home where they raised their two children, Gemma and Ben, because of their enormous collection. A countless amount of art, including paintings and sculptures, consumes the main living spaces and spills into the backyard. According to Pam, the pair bought their first piece of art together when they were engaged in the 1960s. But she says Tony’s collection began as a child when his grandad, a painter, gave him some of his work. Tony says many of the artworks in the home hold a special significance because he and Pam have collected pieces from friends and family, including his own children, over the years. “Friendship is a big thing,” he says. “If you have an ongoing relationship with people and their art, it gives meaning to the work on the wall. “The work has an extra dimension to it. The work nearly always tells a story – the person and the work are inseparable.” Some of the pieces in this collection have also come from graduate students Tony has taught at the Central Institute of Technology. “We recognise their talent,” he says. Tony points out that one of the best tips he can give art collectors is to go to auctions. He says he and Pam acquired some of their artworks this way.
HOME
“When you buy an artwork at an auction, you’re kind of rescuing it, because nobody wants it and yet you see its value,” he says. According to Tony, artworks can be like a diary and he and Pam try and surround themselves with meaningful pieces – pieces that are not simply pretty to look at. With paintings and sculptures lining almost every centimetre of wall space, Tony says he is constantly taking in the art through his peripheral vision. Adds Pam: “It’s really interesting that when Tony swaps something around you suddenly see it in a different light.” Pam and Tony consider themselves “custodians” who get to live with their art and then pass it on. “These things get another life,” Pam says. In the backyard, an original studio remains intact and Pam, a jewellery maker, uses it for her work. Outside of his home, Tony has a number of well-known public artworks on display, including Eliza, the bronze bathing girl statue in Matilda Bay in the Swan River, which he and son Ben worked on together. Tony has an 8.5m-tall lighthouse sculpture exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe Beach. He has had exhibits at Sculpture by the Sea for several years and says it is a fitting arena to showcase his works, which often have a connection to the sea. Kristy Symonds ✱ The Sculpture by the Sea exhibition is on at Cottesloe Beach until March 19.

renovation BEFORE & AFTER
BACK TO THE GOOD LIFE The owners felt their backyard was a waste of space and called in landscaper Denise Staffa to create a place for them to entertain
T
HE owners of this Stirling residence love to entertain, but the sloppy layout of their backyard was hindering their desire for an outdoor lifestyle. Denise Staffa, managing director and principal landscape designer of Outside In, says what the owners wanted was for her to breathe new life into their outdoor living spaces. “The owners felt their exterior areas were somewhat disconnected from each other and did not flow,” Denise says. “They found that use in each space was somewhat limited and confusing.” According to Denise, the idea was to create a seamless alfresco entertainment area by removing clutter and revamping poorly placed structures. She says a significant problem was that the tiny lawn, planter boxes and spa “looked lost” in the garden. “The lawn never grew very well and they felt this was a waste of valuable space,” Denise says. “The low limestone planter boxes at the boundaries also did not add any appeal.” The lawn was dug out to make way for a spacious lounge area, which includes beautiful built-in merbau timber seats. The planter boxes were replaced with stylish new brick-rendered ones, one of which contains a tranquil water-ball fountain that has now become a focal point. Matching merbau timber was used to replace the limestone that previously framed the spa. A corner of the yard was transformed into a sleek new stainless steel outdoor kitchen, complete with a granite benchtop, oven and barbecue. “The owners wanted spaces to cook, entertain and relax in and an area to accommodate larger groups of guests,” Denise says. “The kitchen brings this entire space together.” According to Denise, the darker render colours used in the outdoor area contrasts

beautifully with the light-coloured brick of the home, adding depth and warmth to the alfresco. “The owners had rich Moroccan-style colours inside the home with their cushions and throw rugs and I wanted to extend this warm and relaxed feel outside,” she says. The owners were delighted with the transformation, especially the fact that they now had use of the entire backyard. “The yard originally had a disconnected feel, but now we’ve tied it all together,” Denise says. “The outdoor lounges and custom-made drinks bar make this a space you’ll never want to leave.” Min Song

The store also has Japanese-style kokedama plants and terrariums – which Anna makes herself and she has recently begun running weekend workshops so she can show her customers how to create them. She says the way her products are displayed in the store is as important to her as the selection process. Snapshots of the designers and detailed descriptions of the products are displayed next to each item. Anna says this gives the customers an idea about where the product has come from and makes the purchase special. “I want the store to look exciting and also exude an atmosphere,” she says. R Sparrow is a treasure trove of homewares, garden products and gift items tucked away in an intimate little Subiaco store. The shop has an eclectic mix of new, vintage and handcrafted items that owner Anna Macoboy personally sources from a range of designers and small companies. “I’m drawn to designers from Japan to Brooklyn,” Anna says. “I try to do at least one overseas trip a year and also attend a trade show in Melbourne.” Anna says she does a lot of her product sourcing online. Her aim is to provide something a little bit different to the ordinary, in addition to supplying well-designed, highquality goods. Mr Sparrow stocks items ranging from plants, garden tools, stationery, desk accessories, baby and children’s products, to hand and bath towels, kitchenware and jewellery. “There is no shortage of beautiful things being designed,” Anna says.

Shannon’s tip of the week Your outdoor furniture can turn an attractive garden area into a wonderful and comfortable room, but not if it’s too grotty to sit on or use. There are many different kinds of outdoor furniture and each requires its own method of cleaning to keep it in good condition.
HOW TO CLEAN OUTDOOR FURNITURE
HOME
Surface to be cleaned
Cleaning product
Method
Upkeep and general care
Timber – painted
1 cup white vinegar in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Rinsing is sometimes necessary if it is particularly dirty.
When repainting outdoor furniture the rule of thumb is the darker the paint, the faster it wears out. In hot countries such as ours, dark-coloured paints can heat up enough to burn the wood inside.
Timber – stained
One pot of strong black tea strained into a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Do not rinse off.
Regular applications of the black tea mixture will keep the tannins in the timber healthy and prevent splintering and silvering.
Timber – raw
One pot of strong black tea strained into a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Do not rinse off.
Regular applications of the black tea mixture will keep the tannins in the timber healthy and prevent splintering and silvering.
Timber – varnished
1 cup white vinegar in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Sometimes it is necessary to rinse if it is particularly dirty.
Wherever possible move the furniture to shady positions to prevent damage to the varnished surface particularly when the furniture is not in use.
Glass
1 cup white vinegar in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Wipe any residue off with a paper towel.
A couple of drops of sweet almond oil rubbed over the surface will help prevent glass cancer (that rough white soap-scummylooking stuff).
Polycarbonate (the plastic stuff that looks like glass)
1 cup white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of glycerine in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Remove any residue with a paper towel.
Unlike painted surfaces, lighter coloured plastics break down faster in ultraviolet light and using a small amount of sunblock on a cloth after you finish cleaning it down will help prevent damage.
Powder-coated metal
1 cup white vinegar in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Do not rinse off.
Unlike painted surfaces, lighter coloured plastics (including powder coating) break down faster in ultraviolet light and using a small amount of sunblock on a cloth after you finish cleaning it down will help prevent damage.
Uncoated metal
A light sprinkle with bicarb soda followed by a light spray with white vinegar
Rub with a pair of pantyhose while it’s fizzing and then rinse with clean water.
When you finish cleaning, rub it down with a small amount of sweet almond oil to help prevent rust or corrosion.
Cane or wicker
1kg of salt dissolved in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Leave the solution on the surface to completely dry and when the salt crust forms sweep away with a dry broom.
The salt cleaning solution actually cares for the cane or wicker so cleaning a couple of times a year keeps it in good condition.
Canvas
1kg of salt dissolved in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Leave the solution on the surface to completely dry and when the salt crust forms sweep away with a dry broom.
Always remember the faster the canvas dries out the less likely it is to gather mould spore. So if your awnings get wet, leave them open to dry. Treating a couple of times a year with a light spray of the oil of cloves mix (quarter of a teaspoon of oil of cloves in a litre of water in a spray bottle) will help prevent nasty mould discolouration.
Polyurethane
1 cup white vinegar in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Do not rinse off.
Unlike painted surfaces, lighter coloured plastics break down faster in ultraviolet light and using a small amount of sunblock on a cloth after you finish cleaning it down will help prevent damage.
Polyester outdoor fabric
1kg of salt dissolved in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Leave the solution on the surface to completely dry and when the salt crust forms sweep away with a dry broom.
Always remember the faster the shade cloth dries out the less likely it is to gather mould spore. So if your awnings get wet leave them open to dry. Treating a couple of times a year with a light spray of the oil of cloves mix (quarter of a teaspoon of oil of cloves in a litre of water in a spray bottle) will help prevent nasty mould discolouration
Fibreglass
1 cup white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of glycerine in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Wipe away any residue with a paper towel.
A couple of drops of sweet almond oil rubbed on after it is cleaned will help prevent the surface of the fibre glass drying out and getting that powdery look. If you add a little sunblock to the mix it will help prevent ultraviolet discolouration as well.
Plastic
1 cup white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of glycerine in a bucket of water
Stuff the head of a clean kitchen broom down the leg of a pair of pantyhose and sweep the solution across the surface. Wipe away any residue with a paper towel.
Unlike painted surfaces, lighter coloured plastics break down faster in ultraviolet light and using a small amount of sunblock on a cloth after you finish cleaning it down will help prevent damage. It is also important with plastic furniture to store it out of the sunshine when not in use.
Q&A Q
You mentioned soft paraffin wax in a tip of the week about pampering your hands and feet, but I have been unable to buy it at my local pharmacy because they are unsure of what you mean. Can you suggest another supplier?
You can simply try another pharmacist or, alternatively, it is available from craft stores. Paraffin comes in three forms – one is a hard, brick-like substance used in candle making; one is a soft substance that’s rather like very firm petroleum jelly in consistency (that’s the one you want) and is used in many cosmetics; and one comes in a liquid form for use as a lubricant. After reading your email, I approached five pharmacies in my local area and all of them stocked it.

We would like to know how to clean some hard-plastic figurine toys. They are over 20 years old and have become quite tacky to touch. As we want to pass these on to our grandchildren, I would like to clean them up.
That tacky feeling is more or less the surface of the plastic breaking down over time and often because of ultraviolet light. It is easy to clean them with this mixture: Place two tablespoons of talcum powder, four tablespoons of glycerine and two teaspoons of tea tree oil into a saucer and mix it into a paste. Roll a pair of pantyhose up in a ball and dip it in the mixture. Polish the solution over the plastic and leave it for about 60 seconds before rinsing it off. If you’re having trouble getting into all the little figurines’ crevices, thread a piece of the pantyhose over a bamboo skewer to get into those tight spaces. Make sure you rinse them thoroughly and dry them in the shade. Not only is this non-toxic, it is antibacterial and is safe for the children to put in their mouths – as they will!

I have more than 60sq m of tiles in my house, not including the two bathrooms. I am therefore always seeking ways to make cleaning these tiles easier and I’ve been buying bicarb by the bucket load to use your preferred method. I recently purchased a steam mop and, while happy with it, I would like to use some of your non-chemical techniques to clean these tiles and the bathroom. Also, as it came with a glider to steam carpets, have you any suggestions for using it to freshen up carpets a dog
SHANNON LUSH Queen of clean Hi! Shannon here again to help you with your domestic disasters. occasionally lies on? The only ingredient they recommend adding to the water in the steamer is vinegar once a month to clean scale from the steam nozzles.
You don’t need to use bucket loads of bicarb A soda. A light dusting is plenty, followed by a light spray with white vinegar, or simply place white vinegar into your steamer and run it over the bicarb soda. Steam alone is inappropriate for cleaning carpets as it merely brings tannin stains up from the backing of the carpet and I do not suggest you use that variety of steam cleaner on your carpet at all. Carpet steam cleaners have a vacuum nozzle that removes the excess moisture and do not create this problem. Surface steam cleaners, such as the type you are talking about, do not have this capability and I cannot recommend the addition of any chemical to this product for use on carpets.
Thanks for all your great questions this week. Keep them coming and keep them specific. To work out how to remove a stain, I need three pieces of information. I need to know what the stain is made of; what surface it’s on (Is there a varnish? What is the topmost surface that the stain is affecting?); and what, if anything, g, h you’ve already tried to remove it. Each thing you try changes the chemical composition of the stain. Include a photograph if you can. Photographs really help the stain diagnosis. Don’t forget, alternative recycling questions are also welcome.

NATURAL INSTINCTS Digital technology is revolutionising flooring trends with manufacturers replicating natural surfaces, but timber and carpet continue to reign supreme in Australian households
I
NTERIOR designers around the globe are embracing nature in 2012. Flooring trends are following suit, with tiles, carpets, timber and laminates all leaning towards a look that is natural and organic. “There is a move away from the sleek, plain, contemporary style into more textured, natural finishes,” says Sarah Bird, an architectural representative at Tile Boutique. “We are seeing an increase in the popularity of stone and wood-grain finishes.” The trend for natural materials means that timber is once again a fail-safe flooring choice. “Timber floors continue to be popular among Australian homeowners for a variety of reasons,” says Robyn Barnes, marketing manager at Boral Timber. “Timber floors are an excellent way to infuse warmth and colour throughout a home and, with a wide range of species available, there is something to suit any interior or personal style.” Carpet is also in vogue, thanks to the natural warmth and colour it can bring to a home. Carpet Court’s national marketing manager Natasha Gallardo agrees.
HOME
“Wool carpets have been introducing style and comfort into homes for years, and it’s no wonder – wool is a magical material with natural qualities that make it one of the most versatile and durable floor coverings you can choose,” she says. Cavalier Bremworth marketing manager Desiree Keown says carpet indulges people’s fondness for natural, sustainable materials. “Most people love what is real and genuine. Wool carpets are not only soft, comfortable and natural, they are also fire-resistant, easy to clean and very durable,” she says. While the popularity of timber and carpet shows no signs of waning, flooring surfaces that replicate natural materials are becoming increasingly popular, in line with interior design trends. Producers of tiles, engineered stone, laminates and vinyl are using the latest digital technology to create flooring surfaces that mimic natural materials while at the same time being hard-wearing and affordable. Renae Tropiano, interior designer at Ceramo, agrees that digital technology has revolutionised flooring.
“With the onset and expansion of digital tile technology, the trend continues to move in the direction of natural looks such as timber and stone,” she says. “By replicating the strong patterns, textures and rich colours of natural products, today’s digital tile technology makes it difficult to tell the difference between the real product and the ceramic version.” Lisa Shearon

POINTS TO PONDER The greatest challenge facing homeowners who have ponds in their backyards to cultivate fish is to keep the water clean and free of algae. Here are some valuable tips to help
I
F there’s one question I get asked more than anything else when it comes to ponds, it’s got to be, “How do you keep the water clean and free of algae?”. The answer is not quite so easy – there are some important elements in keeping pond water fresh and healthy. The first relates to the filtration system you’re using. If your pond is green, it is probably because your fish poo levels are creating a high nutrition base that boosts the growth of algae. Filamentous algae or blanket weed is a common problem and can easily be controlled by reducing nutrient levels, improving water flow and using a naturally occurring rock mineral to starve the algae. One of the first things you need to do is to make sure you have a reasonable filtration unit to try to absorb impurities. If it’s a mesh filter, it will become home to billions of bacteria that will eagerly wait to consume the excess nutrient as water flows through it. The second way to increase beneficial microbial activity is by adding a gravel base to your pond. The gravel provides an increased surface area, allowing for more beneficial ammoniaeating bacteria to proliferate. If you think about a running river system, the river floor will be made up of coarse sand and fine gravel and this is home to billions of beneficial bacteria that help to control excess nutrient. Emulating this effect by adding gravel to your pond base is a smart move. A natural or biological plant filter is also important. If you can flow water from the pond through the plants’ roots, you will
strip the water of excess nutrient, effectively starving the algae of food and reducing the impact of it in ponds. Plants are a very important natural filter and growing them in spillways, where water flows through, will ensure the water that reaches the main pond body is cleansed of excess nutrient and impurities. Zeolite chips mixed into your gravel base also help enormously. Zeolite is in many ways the secret to clean water. Its highly porous structure rapidly absorbs nutrients and releases them on demand to plant roots in a unique way. Zeolite’s special properties are well recognised and it’s even used in stock feed to absorb impurities. It’s so absorbent that it even sucks up excess odours in pelletised chicken manures, enabling the bags to be stored on garden centre shelves without everyone choking over the intense smells of farm animal waste. If you already have significant algae problems, applying a fine zeolite powder in the water will effectively absorb and starve the algae and very quickly make the water clean. A daily treatment with this over a couple of weeks will completely eradicate infestations, controlling them for some time afterwards. Zeolite is a completely natural mineral mined in Australia with extraordinary absorption powers. It’s capable of holding enormous amounts of nutrients and pollutants and effectively
cleanses the water making it ideal for animals to live in, especially fish, yabbies and marron, which like clean water. Another naturally derived water cleaner is spongolite – a fossilised prehistoric sponge that acts in a similar way to zeolite by absorbing excess nutrient. Adding this coarser material as a gravelly base in the pond with zeolite is an incredibly effective method to keep the water clean and control algae outbreaks. Keeping pond water clean is critical to the health of your fish. Adding zeolite and spongolite with the use of a filtration system has an amazing impact on water health. Professional water garden specialists such as the Woodvale Fish and Lily Farm will recommend that every new pond has a significant layer of zeolite mixed into the gravel. A bed of zeolite and spongolite will also make a good home for a hydroponic-style growing bed filled with fast-growing salad plants such as lettuce, which can be harvested regularly. Trevor Cochrane

Ellen Dinsmore, of Bayswater, has a lot of flowering plants that have lovely foliage, but don’t produce much flower. It’s likely they are either shaded or lacking a little potash to help produce the flower they should naturally deliver. Applying potash this month is the best bet to trigger flowers this spring.

Casey Harman, of Leederville, is about to start building and there are a lot of big trees on the block that all have to be removed. There is a tree that looks like camphor laurel and it is the one and only tree that Casey was planning on keeping. Should Casey keep this tree or not? I think it’s a great tree and my answer is, yes, definitely keep it. Camphor laurel is considered a pest tree in some areas, but in a typical suburban garden it looks amazing and is very hardy. E all want our dogs to respond reliably to our commands. Not only for our convenience, but for the dog’s own safety, as well as the safety of others. Unfortunately, our pets will often turn a deaf ear to our request and ignore us. However, there are ways to overcome this problem. The following exercises need consistency and enthusiasm to succeed. They also require patience and understanding. All dogs are individual and should be treated as such.
LAY THE FOUNDATION Early attention training is important. In the safety of your home and without distractions, teach your dog to look at you when you say its name. Reward it for turning its head towards you. Follow through with a word like “Yes!” and then offer a reward. This early training is vital for times when the dog is exposed to more distracting or interesting environments. Try to avoid the overuse of its name. This will help to keep your dog alert for more opportunities to come to you. Your pet will anticipate generous rewards. These can be in the form of good quality treats, patting, verbal praise, playing with a favourite toy, dinner, a walk or a ride in a vehicle.
THE “COME” COMMAND First say your dog’s name to get its attention. If it’s evident it is responding to you, take a breath, then say “Come!” in a confident voice. Only use this tactic when you’re sure there is a high likelihood your dog will respond. Avoid the temptation to repeat the order.
WHEN YOUR DOG DOES COME Prolong the reward. With the offer of food, pats or play, your dog learns that coming to you and staying with you is worth the effort. There’s no hurry to leave. After the rewarding time, release your dog and let it resume what it was doing. With increased repetition, you’ll notice that the penny will start to drop and your dog will boomerang back to you more times than not.
DISTRACTION TRAINING
is patting it, or from their food bowl, or while the dog is frolicking with a favourite toy.
COMPETITION WITH ENVIRONMENT Initially save your recall for times when there isn’t much competition from the dog’s surroundings. Only call your dog when you’re confident it will respond. Make sure that coming to you is more rewarding than ignoring you.
SAFETY FIRST BEFORE FREEDOM Use an eight to 10m-long line that is attached to your dog’s collar (to avoid injury, don’t attach the long line to a head halter). Either hold or let your dog drag the long line while it investigates, plays and has a romp while still under your control. Long lines are lifesavers and are an important training tool that shouldn’t be overlooked. Once your dog returns to you, reward it accordingly. Then prompt it to resume what it was doing. As it becomes more obedient to instruction, hide behind a tree or sprint off. However, if you can’t control the consequences, don’t waste your recall word. More importantly, keep the dog attached to the long line.
WHAT TO DO IF THEY DON’T RESPOND Go to your dog and take it gently, but confidently, by the collar. Then return with it to the spot from where you called. Ask it to “Sit” or “Drop” before you release it. The point here is to teach your dog that coming to you isn’t an end of good things. You can also use interruptive words such as “oi” or “ah ah” if it’s being particularly aloof. Alternatively, step on the long line if your dog ignores you. Have a friend hold on to your dog while you move a distance away. Wait until it cares enough to come to you. Pat another dog or do whatever you can think of to encourage your dog and help it understand that coming to you is the right choice.
ALL DOGS ARE DIFFERENT Dogs have in-born drives that trigger certain responses. They can override the inducements you have to offer. Knowing what excites your dog is important. Dogs have a natural drive to hunt prey. Moving targets, such as a running cat, will initiate a prey response. If you cannot give your dog a better reason to come to you over such distractions, then you must take control. Learn what your dog’s natural instincts are and work with them. It will be an advantage to both you and your dog.
BONUS EFFORT EQUALS BONUS REWARD Pay according to performance. If your dog comes to you, but there’s room for improvement, reward according to merit. A sloppy recall can still receive a pat or praise, but a dynamic response should be well rewarded with what the dog desires most. However, even if your dog’s response isn’t quick, but it still chose to come to you, despite the beckoning of other temptations, it deserves a high reward. A training session with a few successful recalls is more productive than the overuse of misplaced words directed to a disengaged dog. Once a dog has reliably learnt the command to come to you, it will keep on doing so. However, if there are any backslides, I would suggest returning to the basics. Have fun teaching your dog, but bear in mind that it wasn’t born knowing how to come when called. ✱ Check out Kathy’s website for her popular Intensive Workshop dates, www.kathysdogtraining. com.au.
Once reliable responses are established, test how good a job you’ve done. Practise by calling your dog away from another family member who

Must Eat book This book reflects on 10 years of recipes and all the effort we’ve made at Must. The book also incorporates many of the stories of my suppliers. To me, the recipes are timeless and I’ve taken the time to lay them out in quite a lot of detail. I’m immensely proud of it. Surfboard I purchased this wooden longboard in Bali. I bought it as a joke and it’s become one of my favourite things. I’m a really passionate surfer and, fortunately, having a business in Margaret River means I get to enjoy business as well as pursue a passion on most trips down there. Another of my absolute passions is travelling to Bali several times a year with family and mates. T-shirts I’m a crazy T-shirt collector. I buy them on the internet. My wife isn’t that happy about it because I’ve got about 50 or 60. I love them and I could wear them 24/7. I’m not a suit-and-tie man. Family photo This is of me with my wife, Tamara, and my sons, Alex and Sam, and was taken at the blowholes at Dirk Hartog Island on a family holiday. We had a huge amount of fun. The people who run the homestead on the island are good friends and I actually flew up and catered for their wedding there a few years ago. It’s an amazing place to explore and discover. Fishing photo This was taken at Cape Leveque. This was particularly memorable because we decided to enjoy the sunset on the beach and Sam, my son, took photos of me flicking lures out and came back with this one which was amazing. Copper pans I bought them in 1987 when Tam and I were travelling around Europe and had stopped in Paris. I had
4
budgeted for a set of copper pans because I knew I’d have them for the rest of my life. Because of the unrest there at the time, no security guard would let me into the Metro or any of the shops. We had to walk almost 11km back to our van with them. They’re beautiful and we use them a lot. They’re almost a family heirloom. 7 Paella pan I have an annual ritual when I’m cooking down at Must Margaret River. Every summer, I invite all my friends from the South-West over for paella. It’s a huge night. It’s very visual and very inclusive because you’re cooking it in front of people. It’s a good get-together. My seafood paella has prawns and mussels and whatever else I can source at the time. 8 Beef That is something I really, truly love – a piece of dry-aged beef rib. It has been aged in the dry ageing cellar at Classic Meats for a month and sourced from Paul O’Meehan’s property close to Albany. It’s the care and attention to detail he puts into growing this beef that produces the most amazing flavour and texture. 9 Wine I have a particular love for red burgundy. Must has won every major wine award in the nation and has just been placed into the Hall of Fame at the Gourmet Traveller national wine awards after winning wine-bar wine list of the year award thrice, and can’t win it again. 10 Coffee machines We have a home coffee machine and a travel coffee machine. The coffee machine we have at home is housed in our temple of coffee. We get to enjoy that several times a week and when we travel a coffee machine gets packed in the car. I’m serious about good coffee.
