Cameron says much of the versatility is a result of requests from buyers who have fallen in love with features in several of the builder’s display homes. “Because we have so much new product on the ground, there’s no question that people see elements that they like and they want to work these into their new home,” Cameron says. “The key is for the sales consultant to start with the right floor plan.” A recess in the foyer off the master suite is ideal for three built-in drawers and a slim section of stone benchtop that can be added as an optional extra to create a handy drop zone or display area. There’s little to add in the master suite, though, where the resort styling is highlighted by dark timber sliding shutters to the dressing room and stacker doors to a decked outdoor area and a conversation pit. The ensuite is open plan, with what Cameron describes as “more of a shower room”, featuring a walk-in, hob-free design and a built-in tiled seat. There are two square, above-counter basins set into a designer vanity unit with drawers and cupboards. The bathroom in the kids’ wing also highlights recent changes to the Dale Alcock Homes’ specification, with a new-look flickmixer tap, hob-free shower, a longer than usual bath set into a hob and a new square semirecessed vanity basin from Caroma. Cameron says the new basin is available as standard, giving buyers the stylish square look they’re after, but at no extra cost.

The kids’ zone in the Kayana features an activity area that makes great use of space and features a wall of storage behind glass sliding doors. The main living areas are presided over by a heart-of-the-home kitchen featuring a doubledepth island bench, an appliance cupboard with bifolding doors, a glass splashback and lots of pot drawers. The benchtop combines a 20mm-deep stone top with a deeper timber trim for contrast and resort-inspired styling. Resort styling is also highlighted outside where the elevation teams tiled feature walls with Hebel mouldings, timber batons and slate-look roof tiles with smooth ridges, plus the optional gatehouse. HE Australis by Plunkett Homes brings a new level of design and fit-out to the company’s urban living range. With its hotel-inspired entry foyer, feature walls lined with travertine, glitzy master suite and glossy contemporary kitchen, it’s a far cry from the country homesteads Plunkett first built its reputation on. On display in Wandi, the Australis is also the first Plunkett display home to have three bathrooms. “We’ve taken things to a whole new level,” says Dave Clynk, design manager at Plunkett. “It’s about being able to offer a real diversity of displays.” The up-to-date look starts from the facade, where Dave and his team have opted for triple posts, a strong roofline, dark walls contrasting with stone-effect render and double entry doors with clear glass. Sweeping past the living area on one side and the games room on the other, the entry foyer is long, wide and impressive. Floor to ceiling columns have been tiled with travertine and are accented by uplights set into the floor. “When you walk through the entry, you have a huge choice as to where to go, yet you’re not faced with endless doors,” Dave says.

A separate foyer to the left leads through to the guest bedroom with its semi-ensuite bathroom. “We have broken up the minor bedrooms so that you have one towards the front as a guest bedroom with its own bathroom and two at the back with an activity room and bathroom for the kids,” Dave says. “It means you basically have two master bedrooms and two minor bedrooms.” It’s a great design feature for families with an older child who would relish having their own space, away from their younger siblings. To the right, just past the study, is a short passageway to the master suite, which is reached via double doors. “It feels like a hotel lobby,” Dave says. A tall corner window in the main bedroom features silicon-jointed glass for a seamless section of glazing that brings the garden up close. There’s a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite with large hob-free shower and double semirecessed basins in a long vanity unit for more hotel-inspired chic. Wrapping the home theatre, kitchen, dining room and living room around the alfresco

accentuates the indoor/outdoor relationship, with a six-panel stacking door system opening up the house to the alfresco. The TV has been consigned to the home theatre, freeing up the living area for conversation and catching up on the family news. Plunkett has pulled out all the stops in the kitchen, opting for a glossy contemporary look with glass splashbacks, Essa Stone benchtops, a wide range hood, cooktop and oven, and lots of storage, including overhead cupboards with lift up doors, a walk-in pantry and oversize drawers. There’s also an appliance area for the coffee machine and microwave, plus space for an e-zone. “We thought it was crucial to have an IT area close to the kitchen,” Dave says. Ideal for homework or household organisation, it’s shown in the display home with a wall of write-on glass, plus a built-in desk and drawers to match the kitchen cabinets. “It’s a great extension of the kitchen,” Dave says. Shannon’s tip of the week To prevent candles from dripping wax all over your tablecloth, place them in the freezer for a couple of hours before use. This will make them burn slower with less splatter. To give them a wonderful shine before placing them on the table, polish them with a little piece of silk.

Q&A Q

My mother washed some cream tops (pictured) with a load of whites and put some Bluo in the water. The tops came out of the wash looking almost blue (they were a beautiful cream colour). They have since been re-washed and the blue tinge has sort of gone, but they are now almost a grey in colour. What do you suggest I do to get them back to their original cream?

Good news! It is really easy to get that grey out. A All you need to do is soak them overnight in white vinegar and then wash them normally. Hang them on the clothes line in the sunshine to dry and you’ll find they are fine.

With the proliferation of shoes coming from China, I’m sure I am not the only person with this problem. Last winter, I purchased a gorgeous pair of black suede-look boots made in China. They’ve always had an extremely strong chemical ssmell, which I assumed would go away. One year later, and after lots of airing and wear, tthey still smell just as strong. Before I wore them, I ssprayed them with Scotchgard to protect them. I’ve ssince sprayed them with Febreze, but to no avail. They are labelled “Harlaw (maybe the style name), ssynthetic upper, synthetic sole and lining. Made in C China”.

I suggest you put them into a large brown paper A bag with a couple of packets of normal black looseleaf tea and leave them for about a week. You must use u a paper bag, not a plastic one because the material needs n to breathe. If you can’t find a paper bag large enough, e you can use an old pillowcase. Shake the bag every couple of days to agitate the tea across a the surface of the boots (this helps remove the Scotchgard). S You will find that the smell dissipates quite well. For future f reference, never use Scotchgard until the smell has h been removed because you are just sealing it in.

I find it is necessary to make sure that the tea gets inside the boots as well because a variety of plastics and nylons are used for this type of material and they create fumes that react with each other to increase the nasty aroma.

I need to know what the stain is made of; what surface it’s on (Is there a varnish? What is the topmost surface that the stain is affecting?); and what, if anything, you’ve already tried to remove it. Each thing you try changes the chemical composition of the stain. Include a photograph if you can. Photographs really help the stain diagnosis. Don’t forget, alternative recycling questions are also welcome.

Stockland is bringing the big half-acre blocks of old back into focus with 13 on offer at their new Park St development in Whiteman – just 20km from the Perth CBD

EOPLE who lament that the halfacre block is a relic of the past will be surprised to know that they can still buy a big homesite not far from the CBD. Leading developer Stockland has released 13 homestead lots at Park St in Whiteman. The blocks range in size from 2047sq m to 2126sq m – just over half an acre – and boast desirable 27m frontages. space means the house can be easily adapted to suit get-togethers large and small. “There’s a seamless ﬂow from indoors to outdoors,” Ian says. “Plus there’s the bonus of having an area that can become a second outdoor entertaining space or simply a private courtyard retreat off the master suite for Mum and Dad.” MyGen has given the Alexa a long list of features to get would-be buyers thinking about the choices available to them. “It’s about putting out there a display that has a lot of options, such as the stacker doors, the high ceilings and the bulkhead to the kitchen,” Ian says. “It’s then a matter of tailoring a package to suit a buyer’s needs somewhere between the $192,670 of the base model and the $237,900 of the display version. “It may be that they want the smart wiring and high ceilings, for example, but not some of the other things.”

With flexibility in mind, MyGen has also developed a three-bedroom version of the Alexa that saves buyers another $12,770 off the base price of the larger version. “This 3x2 version, which has a study that is big enough to make a fourth bedroom, is still a very good size and will fit on a 15m-wide block without any alterations,” Ian says. The Alexa as displayed has four double bedrooms, plus a kids’ study that could easily be converted into a fifth bedroom. It needs a block of about 16.75m but will fit on a 15mwide site with some minor modifications. In keeping with the display home’s coastal location, the elevation teams a pale Colorbond roof with weatherboard cladding and contrasting rendered walls. “It’s a blend of traditional and modern with a coastal feel,” Ian says. Inside the home, the light and airy living spaces are anchored by a smart, contemporary kitchen.

Passive-solar design was the starting point for the four-bedroom home built on a skinny, subdivided block of just over 500sq m. “As an example of passive-solar design on a long, narrow block in the north-south direction, the design minimised windows on the west and east, particularly on the more exposed upper levels,” Craig says. “A northern rear allows for good access to winter sun and the front garage insulates the home from the colder southern direction.” Naturally staying warm in winter and cool

New population growth forecasts reinforce the need for a new approach to housing policies, says Master Builders communications director Geoff Cooper and regional centres to find affordable accommodation. Ballooning traffic congestion and increased work travel times are the costs of growing the suburban footprint. More pressure will be placed on the provision of public transport and our environment. Increased densities and zonings in popular locations would facilitate more housing supply. Next, we have policies that add to the costs of construction. Increased energy efficiency standards, waste management levy increases, electrical infrastructure costs, building levies, training levies and increasing government fees all push up construction costs. Payroll tax is a significant contributor, too. These add to other costs placed on land such as stamp duties – up more than 150 per cent in the past decade.

This is on top of more hidden development costs that push up the price of homes. These include: ✱ ✱ ✱ ✱ ✱ ✱

Environmental restrictions. Public open space requirements. Infrastructure contribution requirements. Community facility provisions. New design requirements. Housing sustainability requirements.

We need to ensure that we can deliver affordable housing for the community or we will have ballooning social and public housing costs. Master Builders will continue to work with governments to promote policies that will deliver more housing for our growing population in WA.

LANNING Minister John Day says WA’s population is projected to grow to more than three million people by 2026. This is about 400,000 higher than a previous projection made in 2006, using a different method of research. We recently achieved the status of the fastestgrowing state in Australia. If current trends continue, this means we will need to house about 45,000 additional people a year, although this will vary annually along with ﬂuctuations in economic growth and migration, etc. As previously reported in this column, we will likely need to produce more than the 20,000 homes a year we now build to house the 900-plus arrivals to our state each week. This will mean that communities around WA will need to grow to house the new members and we will require a strong construction industry in order to make this happen. However, we have several government policies that actively limit housing supply in WA. The low-density zonings imposed by many local councils are a handbrake on development in WA. More people would love to live close to activity centres along our coast, around the river and near transport and retail hubs. Projects such as the Rafﬂes Hotel redevelopment in Applecross have sold out due to the demand for well-located, higher density developments. Unfortunately, height and density limits restrict a developer’s capacity to provide viable unit developments in soughtafter locations. Instead, homebuyers are required to buy on the suburban outskirts of metropolitan

DDING a second storey to your home is a great way to increase your living space, without increasing the building footprint too much. In addition to working out where the stairs will be on the ground ﬂoor and how you will adjust the existing design for the addition, your home will need to be inspected by a structural engineer to make sure its structure will hold up under the weight of the new building work. Use this inspection as an opportunity to evaluate other potential internal modiﬁcations such as removing walls and creating new door and window openings. Organising this inspection after you’ve had some preliminary sketches done is a good investment because it may impact on what you can and can’t do.

When you have an understanding of which walls are load-bearing and which are not, and how best to work with the existing building’s fabric, it will become evident that making some modiﬁcations to the proposed design will be more cost-effective. Adding an extra storey to your home will resolve the space issues you have now, but when doing so you should also look at your needs beyond the next ﬁve years. What if stairs become an issue for a family member due to age or injury? Will the home remain suitable in the event of a family member’s physical disability? A home that includes Universal Design Principles allows people to age gracefully in the comfort of their own homes, have facilities for visitors who may use wheelchairs and have

the option of easily modifying the home to suit future needs of occupants.

Here are some design elements to consider when building a new two-storey home or adding a second storey: 1 Level access from the street entrance and/or carport or garage into the home. 2 Wider internal doors and corridors. 3 A bathroom that contains a hobless shower recess and a toilet on the ground level (bathroom should have a minimum size of 2.4m x 1.9m). 4 A room that could be utilised as a bedroom on the ground floor if all bedrooms are located upstairs. ✱ Check out mbawa.com or liveablehomes.net.au for more information.

I am building a home in the country. At my pre-start with the building company I was told that because of the new building codes I could not have the type of windows featured in the display homes. When I asked why this was not explained to me previously, I was told the display home was built before the codes come into effect. Is the builder obliged to inform me of changes such as this before you get to the pre-start stage? Display homes are an effective form of marketing for builders to show potential buyers examples of their housing designs and workmanship quality. However, many people who may like the builder’s basic design and structure want to add their own modifications, which suit their needs and lifestyle. These changes can include an additional bedroom, a garage instead of a carport, reorientation to suit a particular block of land, or the use of alternative building materials or products. These are variations to the standard design that may cost more. The end product you build may be somewhat different to the original display home. Potential homebuyers should regard a display home as an example of a builder’s skills. Not all the features included in the display home are necessarily included in the home you contract to build. Carpets, furniture, flyscreens, fencing, landscaping, pergolas, etc, which may feature in the display home may not be included in a standard building contract. The builder’s advertising brochures must specify what is excluded from the display home in their standard building contract. Your builder is correct in saying that new energy efficiency rules to be introduced in May 2012 could affect window types and sizes. Under the new laws it may be possible to have some “trade-offs” for this as long as a 6-star energy rating for the home is achieved. For example, use of a higher grade insulation may be possible, but this still may not be sufficient by itself to satisfy the 6-star requirement. Project builders, who rely on system building to generate cost efficiency and lower prices, would normally issue a variation order and levy any higher costs. If there has been a communication breakdown where after contract signing the advertised window sizes/ types which are subject to new legal constraints are now not available, you should discuss with your builder whether a “trade-off” is possible and how the extra cost (if any) is to be met. ✱ For more information on building,

HE cheapest and easiest way to add value to your home is with a fresh coat of paint. According to property experts, a quality paint job can quickly add at least 5 per cent additional value to your property. “To paint the average single-storey, threebedroom home yourself will cost approximately $1600. The return on investment really is a no-brainer,” says Joel Goodsir, marketing manager at Inspirations Paint & Colour. Not sure which colours to choose for your revamp? According to the 2012 Dulux Colour Forecast – a collaboration between Dulux and Australia’s leading trend forecasters, stylists, design bloggers and landscapers – depth-laden blues, paprika and tonal shades reﬂecting natural, raw materials are predicted to be hot. Wendy Rennie, Haymes paint colour and concept manager, forecasts a year of bold, vibrant colours such as fuchsias, purples and yellows with subdued neutrals, greys and greens. “We are seeing a continued shift towards greys being used as key neutrals, as well as the introduction of some vibrant, bold colours in a range of reds, oranges, yellows and greens,” she says. Over at Inspirations, colour consultant Kerry Copp says popular paint shades for interiors will continue to be cool whites, warm grey and taupes with feature accents of charcoals, blacks, reds and greys. “These colours are crisp and contemporary and generally work in most styles,” she says.

Heather Nette King, an interior stylist and writer, says the single most inﬂuential colour for 2012 will be green. “It’s fresh, organic and natural and reﬂects our need to nurture oneself as well as the planet,” she says. Landscaper Daniel Tyrell says one of the biggest movements will be the use of colour outside the home. “Boundaries used to be dark, but we are now seeing a trend to lighter colours on garden walls and fences. It makes the garden bounce so the greens are greener against natural whites,” he says. Be brave when using new colour palettes this season, suggests Andrea Lucena-Orr, colour planning and communications manager for Dulux. “By introducing a small amount of the latest colour or colours, a room can be transformed from tired and outdated to a space perfect for today,” she says. BRIGHT PROSPECT There is nothing like a challenge to bring the best out of designers and Sean Brickwood enjoyed the task he faced in giving this Trigg home the sense of space the owners wanted

UILDING designer Sean Brickwood says designing this two-storey Trigg home to accommodate the needs and wants of a family with two young children presented an enjoyable challenge. The family had bought a 442sq m block in the seaside suburb when they approached Sean to ﬁnd out if the site would be large enough to fulﬁl their extensive wish list. “You’ve got limitations when designing obviously, but when you put your head to it you can usually get something to work really well,” Sean says. “The main thing was to avoid having a cramped feeling in the house. We wanted to create a sense of space and an open and light feeling.” The upstairs area was zoned to incorporate separate wings for the children and the parents. The master bedroom has an area the parents can use as a retreat, plus a walk-in-robe and a hotel-style ensuite.

A corner window in the room provides glimpses of the ocean. The children’s wing has two bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate powder room. Sean says this feature enables the children to co-exist “without annoying each other”. “It’s all separate, so that they each have their privacy,” he says. Glass balustrading has made the staircase a focal point of the home. It also provides unobstructed views of the outdoor entertaining area and enhances the home’s open, spacious feel. In turn, the hallway at the entrance leads you right into the main living area where large windows provide a view through the full length of the beautifully landscaped block. The open-plan kitchen, living and dining area are located to the rear of the home’s ground level. “I decided that because it was a busy street it would be best for the main living areas to be

at the back and away from the trafﬁc noise,” Sean says. Making good use of every square centimetre in the backyard was another crucial part of Sean’s design brief. “We wanted to give it a relaxed ambience. The clients wanted to feel good sitting out there,” he says. “It’s not a large area, but it feels much bigger than it actually is. We wanted to get the most we could out of a small space.” And they certainly did. The outdoor area has a pool, water feature and an alfresco entertaining zone. “The bifold doors on the alfresco almost make it feel like another living room outside,” Sean says. The drying court that comes off the laundry on the southwest side of the ground ﬂoor is the perfect place to hang washing and keep the pool equipment out of sight. “It was important that you couldn’t see

the washing and pool equipment when you walked to the other side of the yard,” Sean says. Working closely with the clients and listening to their needs helped Sean design a project he’s very proud of. “It was a challenge, but it was an enjoyable challenge. OLD MEETS NEW Veronica and Nick DiCandilo admit they have been hoarders. They have now opened a shop and put some of the one-off pieces from their collection up for sale

HE two-storey Industriart store boasts an expansive and eclectic mix of knick-knacks, homewares, furniture, fashion pieces and, of course, art. Owners Veronica and Nick DiCandilo opened the outlet late last year with the aim of giving their customers access to vintage and brandnew items under one roof. Their innovative collection includes a number of one-off pieces the couple have accumulated over the years, recent ﬁnds and objects sourced from trade fairs in Sydney and Melbourne. “Basically, we’re very good at shopping and very good at hoarding,” Veronica says. She says Industriart literally has “something for everyone”. The range of furniture includes some unusual, modern buffet tables. Jewellery, handbags, kaftans, hanging art objects, glassware, tealight holders, mirrors, lighting and rare bric-a-brac ﬁnds from the past few decades are among the other standouts. “I think the old and the new go really well together and can create a really nice look,” Veronica says.

“I love the mix of vintage and retro. I think it’s fabulous.” Veronica says opening the shop was something of an indulgence on her part. “I can’t think of anything better than having a shop and surrounding myself with stuff I love,” she says. “That’s me and that’s what my home is like. Some people might get overwhelmed by it, but having a lot of things makes me feel good.” According to Veronica, Industriart’s layout encourages people to have a look around and customers usually take their time browsing in search of “their own little treasure”. “I want people to feel comfortable enough to have a look,” she says. “Everybody looks at something differently and everybody teaches you something different about each thing.” Some of Veronica’s newer ﬁnds include a range of handpainted bangles and gift cards by WA artist Jillian Piper, while some of the quirkier and older ﬁnds include copper pots and cast-iron columns from old Perth buildings. She says the store’s hidden location – tucked

away in an industrial area in Bellevue – makes the shopping experience more rewarding for the customers who venture there. “People will travel to a store if it’s worth it, and when it’s tucked away like this it is more fun because it’s like you’ve found something special,” she says. Kristy Symonds

SHOWTIME IN NZ The 2012 Ellerslie International Flower Show proved to be one of the best in the world. Trevor Cochrane was there and this is the first of a two-part report on the show

HEN I was at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show last year, I made a promise to my friend Kate Hillier that I would visit the 2012 Ellerslie International Flower Show in New Zealand to support Christchurch in its recovery from the earthquake disaster. Kate is a world-renowned international garden show judge and the manager of the Ellerslie show, which was purchased by the Canterbury-Christchurch council and relocated from Auckland to Christchurch in 2009. The Ellerslie show is widely considered by garden show experts as one of the best on the planet and certainly a serious rival for the best in the southern hemisphere. Nine days before last year’s show was due to kick off, Kate and hundreds of people building the event’s display gardens were quite literally shaken to the core by an earthquake that devastated the city centre, causing an estimated $8-$12 billion damage bill with widespread loss of life and homes. Ellerslie’s marquees that were meant to be the centre of attraction, celebrating the most creative garden design talents in NZ, were turned into triage facilities for the dying and injured and the show was immediately cancelled for the ﬁrst time in its history. This year’s show was amazing. In fact, it was the best show they have ever put on. It is testament to the event management, the NZ garden industry and the ChristchurchCanterbury council’s resolve that rose from the blow 2011 dealt them to create something that rates as one of the top ﬁve gardening events in the world. The 2012 event featured more than 240

exhibitors, including 20 large-scale show gardens. To put it in perspective, that’s more than the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. The standard of displays from the local and overseas exhibitors was stunning. Nine gold-medal, large-scale winners were chosen this year. Australian garden design legend Jim Fogarty, who acted as the convenor of judges, says it was the best Ellerslie show he’d attended in the past 10 years. The standard was of the highest international level and two award-winning designers have been picked to attend this year’s Singapore International Flower Show. Another designer is heading to Hampton Court Garden Show, which is another amazing event.

The gold award winners included: MAX’S PIPE DREAM – AN ENGINEER’S GARDEN By Paul Roper-Gee This garden follows the experiences of Max Smith, a project engineer for the Waitaki hydro-electric scheme, who built a dam next to his house and constructed a very unusual boat house for his rowing equipment. It’s an amazing garden and a first-time entry for the designer, whose display proved to be incredibly popular with the public and judges alike. What was really nice was he stood alongside his stand every day and talked with people explaining the design story and how it worked.

a 24-hour period in Christchurch, as seen from an elevated position over the city, condensed into three minutes. The display deeply touched so many visitors that they were teary from the experience. Dan’s garden was my one of my favourites.

THE LAST AUSTRALIAN GARDEN By Eckersley Garden Architecture Eckersley Garden Architecture is a multi-awardwinning Australian garden architecture firm that has previously won Gold at the Singapore International Garden Show. The garden depicted a droughtplagued Australian landscape with exotic plants being picked up and taken away by a tornado. Scott Leung, who jointly designed this garden, flew in from Melbourne to talk about the design philosophy and how they came to create a fantasy garden like this.

A GARDEN FOR CHRISTCHURCH By Xanthe White Xanthe White is a well-known NZ designer who built a fairly straightforward outdoor courtyard garden that was minimalistic in its approach. Its origins were very European and the open layout featuring natural materials was a style that inspired visitors to talk about how they could adapt it to suit their personal backyards. We worked with Xanthe several years ago when she presented our first-ever international gardening television production for the NZTV One channel and there’s no doubt her knowledge is amazing. Northbridge

I’ve lived in Northbridge since arriving in Perth and I really like the creative energy of the area – the kind that you find in multicultural inner-cities. There’s a very exciting entrepreneurial and cultural spirit that’s evident in the growth taking place around William St, and it’s good to be witness to it. Bike I’ve always lived in cities where buses, trains or walking are easy modes of transport, so I’d never felt the need nor the desire to learn to drive. This changed almost immediately when I moved to Perth but I still cycle as much as I can. Riding around the river to get to work is a nice start to the day. Typewriter I have a steadily growing collection of typewriters which were far too heavy to bring over to Perth with me. The collection includes the typewriter my mum used at secretarial college in the ’60s, as well as the typewriter that once belonged to the exCEO of the Edinburgh International Film Festival. This turquoise number was given by some friends for my 30th birthday. Dan Lepard Baking is therapy for me and Dan Lepard is my favourite baking guru. He’s a flour and bread nerd and goes to wonderfully niche conventions, such as the world marmalade championships. DVDs I’m lucky I get a lot of free DVDs because of work and having shelves of DVDs are as important to me as shelves of books. Box-sets are great as you can think about directors’ works in their entirety. I have a shameless love for old monster movies and Martin Scorsese.

Necklace

My mum makes jewellery and she divided my great-grandfather’s gold watch chain. The silver pendant is something I picked up at a flea market in London. Apparently, it would have been used by servants in the early 20th century to carry their employers’ cigar holders. I don’t know if that’s true but it’s a conversation starter and always provokes more wild theories. 7 Obama jigsaw I was staying with a friend in Pennsylvania the month Obama took office. It was an incredible time to be in the US as there was a distinct sense of optimism and excitement.There was also a plethora of “Obama-bilia”. I bought this jigsaw for $4.49. 8 Photo This is my mum, Katie, at the age of 19, in 1966, in Budapest, Hungary. She was with a Hungarian friend who had been allowed back into the country for the first time in 10 years after he’d left during the revolution in 1956. Both my parents imbued us with a great appreciation of freedom and travel and this is my favourite photo of her as I think it expresses that free spirit. 9 Badlands poster This is a reproduction of a poster for the old Academy Cinema in Oxford St, London. I collect old posters and have various original ’70s posters of American films. 10 Glenfiddich whisky I grew up in southeast Scotland – you learn how to drink relatively young. Ale and whisky are the traditional liquids of choice, but I chose the latter. I always have a bottle around, not because I’m patriotic but because it’s a reassuring taste.
