WA’s talented building designers certainly don’t rest on their laurels. Last night in Sydney, our home-grown heroes took out half of the 2012 national building design awards, which were handed out at a ceremony in the National Maritime Museum. It’s the second year in a row that WA building designers have scooped the awards pool at this prestigious event. See Page 16 for details. Then check out the WA winners picture gallery at .

RETRO-RUSTIC MIX

C

OMBINE the character of a barn conversion with the industrial edginess of a converted warehouse and you have the Bletchley Loft by The Rural Building Company. In a case of rustic meets retro, this brandnew display in Southern River is sure to appeal to buyers looking for something “a little different”. “The whole idea was that it should feel like a barn or warehouse-style conversion,” says Jay Walter, general manager at The Rural Building Company. The loft home has visitors talking from the moment they see the striking front elevation with its tapered limestone-look pier, sweeping roof lines and soaring walls featuring Scyon Axon cladding. Even the front door has been clad to match the walls so that it blends seamlessly and adds an extra barn-like quality to the facade. “It’s an interesting home no matter what angle you look at it from,” Jay says. “We wanted to show a melting pot of materials but buyers could delete some elements if they wanted to.” It’s the sort of design that could prove a real show-off on an acreage block, yet the builder has been careful to make sure the Bletchley Loft could also settle into a suburban setting. In the huge free-form living area, high raking ceilings add volume and the retro-inspired decor is “hunting lodge meets eclectic ’70s”. Jay says Jodie Cooper, of Jodie Cooper Design, looked after the interiors and had plenty of fun drawing on looks from around the globe to give the house a sense of history. In the main living area, the feeling of light

HOME

and space is enhanced by highlight windows along the northern side of the home, large picture windows and doors to the gardens. Jay says everything has been designed to open up so that spaces can be made even bigger. The kitchen has all the modern must-haves, from the long island bench and the bifolding servery windows, to the glass splashback and the stone benchtops. A veneer-clad bulkhead has been suspended above the kitchen island bench using long steel poles, adding definition without losing any of the spaciousness, while an open-tread staircase rises to the loft, which is entirely given over to the master suite with its wall of glass. “It feels as if you’re in a converted warehouse and the upstairs area is the old foreman’s office looking down on the floor below,” Jay says. In the ensuite bathroom off the master bedroom there’s a subtle nod to the resortthemed bathrooms of Bunker Bay, with separate vanity units that sit either side of the entry into the fitted dressing room. Frosted glass doors conceal the toilet and the large walk-in hob-free shower in the bathroom while mirror-fronted vanity cabinets have been set into the walls above the basins. “Because we had the loft space, everything was big, but it didn’t add extra cost because we had the space anyway,” Jay says. He says the timber-framed construction of the upper floor made for great versatility when it came to adding recesses in the walls. On the ground floor, there is a home office that could easily be enhanced by adding a door to the side of the house for business clients to use.

Three minor bedrooms lead off a kids’ activity room and there is a central courtyardstyle alfresco featuring exposed rafters. At just over $630,000, the display version of the Bletchley Loft is loaded with features but there is a base price of $472,466 that will make an excellent starting point for buyers who want all the design value without all the add-ons. first HOMEBUYERS

Stockland has launched a new range of house-and-land packages specially aimed at helping young couples enter the property market

S

AVVY developers and builders are luring would-be first homebuyers back into the market by launching some competitively priced house-and-land packages. Stockland’s new Now Range at Wungong Reach, near Armadale and just 25 minutes from Perth’s CBD, is one of the budgetconscious developments expected to be a big hit with people who are seeking affordable housing options. Col Dutton, Stockland’s general manager of residential, says the new southeastern community was carefully designed to allow young couples to enter the housing market. “The Now Range offers contemporary homes with minimalistic-style floor plans to accommodate a wide range of furniture layouts and interior styles,” Col says. “These smart designs will appeal to young couples, in particular, who want a modern, easy-to-maintain home which is great for entertaining.” Stockland will release 16 Now Range houseand-land packages, starting from $263,000 each, over the next few months. Boundary fencing, front landscaping and floor and window finishes will be included in the package prices. Two of Perth’s leading builders, Domain Homes and WA Housing Centre, have created designs for the Now Range. Domain Homes sales manager Jeremy Muir says the homes offer all the modern features

HOME

prospective homebuyers expect from the latest urban designs. “Our designs have smart and efficient floor plans that make it possible for young first homebuyers to own a three-bedroom, twobathroom home,” he says. “Affordability is in the forefront of our mind because we know how much this market wants to get on the property ladder.” About 2700 homes are expected to be built at Wungong Reach over the next 10 years. Residents will have access to a new town centre, two new schools and 37 hectares of open space. Wungong Reach is a joint venture between the WA Department of Housing and Stockland. ✱ For more information, visit www.nowrange.com.au or contact Ben Wills, phone: 0423 758 372.

home HELP

SHANNON LUSH Queen of clean

Q&A Shannon’s tip of the week If you have pets and want to keep them off your couch, just remember lavender for dogs and camphor for cats. Tuck a little bit down the back of the couch and they will stay off it. If you do end up with pet hair all over the couch, here’s what to do. Put on a pair of disposable rubber gloves, wash them with soap and water and shake them dry (don’t dry them on a towel). Then wipe your gloved hands across the fabric to remove the hair.

Q

Can a bar or cake of soap be changed into liquid soap? I have so many cakes of soap and I, like many people these days, prefer liquid soap.

Changing your hard soap into soft soap is easy. Grate your hard soap using a cheese grater and measure how many cups of flakes you have. You will need to adjust the recipe according to the quantity of soap flakes.

A

The formula is: 3 cups of soap flakes 2 cups of boiling water 2 tablespoons of glycerine 1 teaspoon of essential oil (you can use your favourite fragrance here but it must be an oil, not perfume, because the oil needs to emulsify with the soap flakes to keep it supple) ✱ 1 teaspoon of methylated spirits (this evaporates completely and just aids the mixing process) ✱ ✱ ✱ ✱

Place the ingredients in a large jar with a nice, tight, screw-top lid. Wrap the jar in a tea towel or hand towel so that you can hold it firmly without overheating your hands. Shake until all of the ingredients are completely dissolved and then pour the solution into your favourite pump pack. If you wish to colour the solution, rose petals are ideal. Just put half a dozen vibrantcoloured rose petals into the jar and strain them out before you fill your pump pack. Many people prefer to use food colouring, but this can tint your hands if you go overboard so be careful to use only one drop of colouring for this quantity of ingredients. You can increase the quantity of water to

two and a half cups if you prefer a more runny solution.

Q

What is the best solution you can recommend for washing 100 per cent cashmere garments? A lot of the time the labels say “dry-clean only”, but surely there is a natural method of washing a natural product without the use of chemicals etc. I have also read that cashmere is hair, not wool. Is this correct? Can you let me know the best water temperature for washing my garments as well?

Yes, you can handwash cashmere, A but you just have to be very careful. The “dry-clean only” label is designed to prevent people destroying their clothes by simply throwing everything in the washing machine. To wash your cashmere clothes, fill a tub with blood-heat water. Test the water on your wrist in the same the way you would test a baby’s bottle. If you cannot feel either warmth or cold across your wrist, it is the right temperature. Add a tablespoon of really cheap shampoo (the cheaper the better because it doesn’t contain so many fruit oils– one of the nonbranded varieties will be perfect). Gently wash the garments in the solution and then rinse them in exactly the same temperature water (the temperature is very important). Lay the wet garment on a clean towel in the shade to dry. Slow drying means that the garments will not shrink. To be doubly sure, just check on them every now and again while they are drying

Hi! Shannon here again to help you with your domestic disasters. because they may need to be tugged into position. While this solution is perfect for pure cashmere, if you’re talking about garments that contain multiple fabrics, such as a cashmere suit that is lined with silk and has cotton wadding in the shoulder area, you’ll be dealing with a different kettle of fish altogether. Here you’ll need to use my home drycleaning solution. Place 1kg of unprocessed wheat bran into a large bowl and gradually add drops of white vinegar, one at a time, stirring constantly until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. It should start to come together but not feel wet at all. Place the mixture into a clean, old pillowcase along with your garment and secure the opening of the pillowcase tightly with an elastic band. Place the pillowcase on the seat of your favourite armchair and after a week of watching normal television your backside will have done the work for you. The normal warmth and movement of your backside agitates the bran and vinegar over the surface of the fabric and drycleans it. At the end of a week take the bag outside, remove the garment and brush off the excess bran. It’s not often that you get to use your “sit-upon” to do the cleaning.

expert ADVICE With 6-star energy ratings set to come into force, home builders should be giving some thought to installing thermally efficient double glazing, says RiverStone director Paul Marshall

W

INDOWS are such a fundamental element of any modern house design that we nearly always take them for granted. The benefits of windows are that they let in light, they let you see the outside, they keep the weather out and they keep sound both in and out. These are all good things, but the problem with the windows we’ve been using for the past 200 years or more is that they also do some unpleasant things. They let heat in during summer and they let it out in winter. They let in the noise of traffic and they let out the noise of your son practising on his new drums. What’s more, most modern windows are relatively cheap singleglazed, aluminium-framed units that are fragile and susceptible to

damage, both during the construction phase and once you’ve moved into your new home. So how can we fix these issues? To some extent the problems are inherent in the function. After all, any penetration of the building fabric will reduce the performance of the building as a whole. Once you put a hole in any wall you have provided an easy access point for heat, moisture, wind and dust. But we can minimise the negative impact of windows by using thermally broken double-glazed windows. Thermally broken double-glazed windows are generally manufactured using stronger, more solid aluminium frames that make the whole product able to withstand high wind loads and impact damage. The frame is “broken” into two halves by the insertion of a non-heat-transmitting material that prevents heat transfer from inside to the outside and vice versa.

The glass itself is made as two sheets separated by a space that is fully sealed with a desiccant inside. Heat and noise transfer from one side of the glass to the other is substantially reduced. These extremely strong window systems are usually installed using a sub-frame. The subframe is installed at the brickwork stage, but the actual finished window is not installed until much later in the building process when it is securely attached to the sub-frame. Unlike the installation of current residential windows, this process limits damage to the frames and glass. The increased thermal efficiency of thermally broken double-glazed windows over normal windows is substantial and allows this type of window to make a significant contribution to achieving the 6-star energy rating standard that will soon be required under the new Building Code of Australia requirements.

DISPLAY HOME NOW OPEN IN ALKIMOS Lot 8, Altea Way (Trinity Estate)

Large homes with views to the south will have significant problems achieving a 6-star rating because the big areas of glass become the source of significant heat loss in winter. This has been a big surprise for most designers because it is nearly always assumed that in Perth it would be keeping summer heat out that is the most important factor. Designers are discovering that this is generally not the case in home design here. It is the loss of heat through glass, or the lack of heat gain through north-facing glass, that generally presents the biggest challenge in home design today. Double glazing on its own doesn’t necessarily solve the problem for us, but it certainly makes a big contribution to thermal efficiency in a modern home. The technology has been in use in Europe and the US for more than 50 years, but has not taken hold here because of our milder climate and the problem of costs.

Double-glazed windows have been very expensive in the past, but the start-up of the new 6-star rules will force many a residential building designer to add double glazing to their design specifications in order to meet the standard. Fortunately, costs have been in relative decline for about 10 years. A significant number of new players have also come into the field and are offering relatively cheap, good-quality imports from China that have allowed the price to fall. As volumes build, the price will fall further in a nice, virtuous circle. So if you plan to build soon, then do consider the use of doubleglazed windows. Not only will they make your home quieter, but they will also make it cooler in summer and warmer in winter – all the while performing their historical functions of keeping the weather out and letting you take in the view.

TROPHY CABINETS The attention to detail in the cabinetry of this Karrinyup abode gave builder Rob Spadaccini an award for excellence in addition to the prize for best contract home in its price category

M

UCH of the detail in this silkysmooth single-storey home in Karrinyup was added well after the original plans were drawn up, but that didn’t faze builder Rob Spadaccini. In fact, the builder encourages his clients to embrace new details and features, knowing that his team of skilled trades can make it happen. “We only build a small number of homes every year and that gives us the ability to work very closely with our clients,” says Rob, director at Spadaccini Homes. “You get to know your clients as you build and you just want to achieve the best for them.” Named best contract home in the $800,000 to $1 million category at this year’s Master Builders Bankwest Housing Excellence Awards, the home also picked up the award for excellence in cabinet making. Built for a busy couple working in the restaurant business, it’s perhaps no surprise that the kitchen is a standout. Glossy lacquered cabinets reach from the floor to the ceiling, while a vast island bench naturally draws family and friends to the kitchen to see what’s cooking. Rob says it was imperative that the automotive two-pack paint finish to the cabinets was flawless. “It’s got to be perfectly flat and nice and crisp,” he says. “My reputation probably precedes me and my guys know that if it’s not done right they’re going to be redoing it. “They know they have to take a lot of time and the attention to detail needs to be there.” The island bench was created from two vast slabs of black galaxy granite. The thicker of the two slabs has a 70mm profile and has been

used as a waterfall end. Rob says the two pieces were skilfully joined so that the island bench looks as if it has been carved from the one piece of stone. Rich, moody colours enhance the air of indulgence in the ensuite bathroom, where the builder has seamlessly brought together embossed tiles, stone vanity tops and customdesigned cabinets. “The corner cabinets give the bathroom a bit more of a three-dimensional look. Having the mirror closer to you is also practical,” Rob says. Two different lacquer finishes give the impression that the doors and drawers are framed. The clients were happy to leave much of the detail up to Rob, who added Spadaccini’s signature ceiling details to the three-bedroom home, which also includes a gym and a study. “We’ll often design in a lot of negative detail in the ceilings, such as recesses, bulkheads and dropped sections,” Rob says. “I love stepped ceilings. You can turn a plain home into an amazing one just through the ceilings alone. “Our clients take that on board and with this house I had free rein.”

Stacking doors open up from the kitchen to a large alfresco with raking ceilings lined with cedar. Cedar has also been used to line the eaves of the home, adding to its resort-style appeal. The garage door, cedar front door and gutters have all been custom-made. “It all adds to the overall feel of the home,” Rob says. “The owners wanted a home that was completely livable and really had a bit of class to it. They go home to a resort every night.” Paula Evans

home office as it has its own door to the front garden. In the kitchen, the builder has created a scullery effect by using a central island unit that houses the fridge/freezer. “Kitchens are important and even though you might be building on a small block, you don’t want a small kitchen,” Gary says. With lifestyle in mind, there are bifolding servery windows from the kitchen to the barbecue area in the adjoining alfresco, and a door from the family room to a vegie garden at the side of the house. Paula Evans

entry

Group, Baby Boomer Homes has recently been redefining its design philosophy. Gary says the relaunch means the company is focusing on custom-designed homes for singles and couples, including retirees, young professionals, prime-timers whose kids have flown the nest and friends teaming up to share a mortgage. The builder’s clients are often tackling urban infill sites that demand a bespoke solution and have a building budget of between $300,000 and $500,000. Baby Boomer Homes is also working with homebuyers who have bought a cottage block in a new estate and are looking for a costconscious, custom-designed home. With smaller blocks here to stay, Gary says we can expect to see more loft designs featuring cost-effective, timber-framed upper floors that not only help keep the budget in check but also give a home an individual look. The Rossmoyne is a case in point. The two minor bedrooms and sitting room upstairs have a cute cottage feel, with sloping ceilings and secret storage areas. “What I love about lofts is that they give you spaces that are unusual,” Gary says. Downstairs, there is a big master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, plus a second bedroom that would also make a great

utility

D

ESIGNING for awkward blocks is par for the course for Baby Boomer Homes, but the builder also had an old pool to factor into the design of this home in Rossmoyne. Typical of many urban infill blocks, the oddshaped site had been created after two neighbours got together to each sell off a portion of their back garden. The old pool shell was retained and it became the focal point of a quirky loft home that is open to the public for a limited time. Dubbed the Rossmoyne, it is essentially a single-storey home with two minor bedrooms, a sitting area and the second bathroom in the loft space. Downstairs, there is an alfresco area either side of the pool, a good-sized kitchen, an everyday living and dining space, study, home theatre, master suite, guest bedroom, powder room and a utility room with a shower. “It functions as a single-storey home but the rooms that aren’t used much have been thrown up into the loft,” says Gary Brown, who has recently taken on a design role with Baby Boomer Homes. “You don’t have to sacrifice a small block space for minor bedrooms or a guest space that’s rarely used.” Part of the Benchmark Designer Homes

This year’s national Design Excellence Award, which has been won by WA building designers nine times in the past 17 years, went to Queensland building designer Gerard Smith for his stunning renovation-extension project in the Sunshine Coast’s hinterland. BDA WA executive officer Rochelle James says the award-winning project was a worthy choice in a high-quality field and represents a change that now puts renovation design at the forefront of the industry’s work. “The overall winner can come from any one of the various award categories, and when you are on the national stage, you are up against

WA building designers achieved top honours in eight of the 17 award categories. REVIVING MEMORIES Creating a home that had a “Fremantle feel” was the top priority for architect Tom Lemann and builder Jon Challen who worked closely with the owner to achieve his retirement dream

A

FTER buying the last vacant block in old South Fremantle, the owner sought out architect Tom Lemann and builder Jon Challen, of Jon Challen Constructions, to fulfil his retirement dreams and design a dwelling that emulated the style of his former childhood home, which was in the same area. Tom and Jon worked closely with the owner to make the most of the property’s location and to ensure it had the “Fremantle feel” that he loved. Limestone walls create light, warm spaces while also drawing sandy colours and weathered textures inside the home. The limestone is complemented by jarrah window frames and cedar sashes and doors. Jon says one of his favourite features is the curling jarrah staircase, which snakes up to the second floor. “It was very complicated, but I used a firstclass carpenter who created a fantastic curved handrail,” he says. “It’s quite spectacular.”

Pivoted porthole windows – backed by LED lights – are another standout feature and give the home a distinct, nautical flair. The colour scheme of chrome, black and grey tones is highlighted by blue splashbacks that add to the ocean-inspired vibe. Jon says he was given some flexibility to implement his own ideas in order to help the owner achieve his goals. “He gave me quite a lot of freedom with the finessing details of the project,” he says. The home was designed with sustainability in mind. Harvested rainwater runs through all of the plumbing and reticulates parts of the garden. The house has also been fitted with solar panels and a hydronic heating system. “This house creates a lot more than it uses,” Jon says. There’s even an electronic weather station that runs off a control panel in the kitchen. “The owner is a keen boater and fisherman so this is a fantastic tool for him,” Jon says.

The owner’s nautical influences are also evident in the balcony’s caulked timber decking, which resembles a luxurious boat deck. The courtyard is covered with a pitched, cedar-lined roof and has been decked out with a small, easy-care grassed area and large potted shrubs, which suit the area’s harsh winds and salty conditions. A separate studio, which can be used as a guest apartment, has been built above the double garage at the rear of the property. Jon says the home feels quintessentially Fremantle, combining a weathered, historic feeling with the freshness and vibrancy of the coast. It perfectly suits the area and its owner, who now has his own seaside haven to retire in. Kate Dromey

GAVAN FORSTER

Prevention is better than cure, so preparing your house for storms or cyclones could save you money -- and a lot of heartache, says Geoff Cooper, Master Builders director of communications You can also use gutter guards to help prevent blockages that can build up over time along your roof.

To help prepare and protect your property in the event of a storm, SGIO recommends the following:

Q

Clear gutters Secure loose roof tiles Trim overhanging tree branches Store unsecured outdoor furniture Shelter vehicles under cover or away from trees ✱ Make sure your insurance is up to date ✱ Keep an emergency kit in the family home containing, at a minimum, a torch and some working batteries, a first-aid kit, a portable radio and important documents, securely sealed in a waterproof bag ✱ ✱ ✱ ✱ ✱

If you do take steps to secure your home, you could save on costly repair bills, significant inconvenience and, in some cases, even protect your wellbeing. If you need a Master Builder member (e.g. a gutter guard specialist) to assist you in securing your home, visit mbawa.com and use the free Find a Member service.

A-Z BUILDING information

A

Why was there a need for change? The previous legislation, which was more than 50 years old, was in need of a facelift. It wasn’t able to keep up with the demands of industry and expectations of consumers. It is hoped this modernised building-control legislation will reduce approval times – and getting started sooner usually results in savings in construction cost and associated expenditures such as rent. Some home builders are already opting to use a private certifier. However, because plans also need to be assessed for compliance with other legislation – including health and planning – it may be more efficient to use the service provided by your local government so that all the issues can be assessed at the same time. Private certifiers only determine compliance

with building codes and building standards. As with all new legislation, there are bound to be a few initial hiccups and confusion as industry and government adapt to the changes. But with time the legislation will deliver results for WA as similar reform has for other states. ✱ Contact Master Builders about any private certification needs on 9476 9800.

Private certification is expected to play a key role in building approvals under new regulations, says Master Builders technical adviser Romina De Santis NEW Building Act came into effect in WA on April 2 bringing about a number of changes to the way we can have buildings assessed for approval. WA is the last state in Australia to adopt private certification and it now has similar codes to other building regulations around the country. Private certification means that you are not restricted to having your plans checked by your local government authority for compliance with the Building Code of Australia and building standards. As a homeowner, you may go to a neighbouring local government or a private certifier and then submit their certificate with your application for a building permit to your local government or permit authority.

Can you explain how builders arrive at their “estimate” for site costs? Why isn’t this a set cost like most other items in a fixedprice contract? Many homebuyers do not understand how site costs are treated in building contracts. This confusion can lead to unnecessary anxiety for the client and start the whole building process on the wrong foot. Under the Home Building Contracts Act (1991), a builder cannot charge more than what is reasonable for site works. Builders will usually examine a site plan and/or visit the site before a contract is signed to determine an estimate of site costs. Depending on the site, this process can include an engineer’s report or even a geotechnical report and obtaining quotations from contractors. In determining the site cost estimate, the builder must, by law, take all reasonable steps to ensure that the price is an accurate one. However, site costs will usually be included as a provisional cost item in most building contracts. Despite the rigour usually associated with obtaining a site cost estimate, unforeseen circumstances can cause this estimate to blow out. Builders could hit limestone below ground level that may not be visible from a preliminary inspection. Site works in redevelopment areas may also blow out when apparent clean fill blocks are inspected below the surface. Buyers should also check to see whether service connection costs are included in their site cost estimate. Builders may include, say a 10m sewer run and a 7m water run, but you should check whether power or Telstra runs are to be included in a site cost estimate. It is important to compare “apples with apples”. One builder’s site cost estimate may be higher than another, but could include the cost of all services as well. Some builders offer “fixed site costs”, but this may be conditional on factors such as a clear, flat block with no visible rock. As always, read your building contract carefully so that you know what you are contracting to do. Clarify uncertain words and cost estimates. No one wants unexpected bills for unbudgeted items because they did not understand the contract they signed.

TORMS can strike anywhere – and at any time – so there’s no time like the present to get your family and your home “storm-ready”. Insurers certainly feel the impact of claims when the first severe storms hit every year. Sandra Robinson from insurer SGIO has warned that many people are either too relaxed when it comes to being ready for a storm or simply haven’t thought about what they need to do. Many people don’t think about that tree growing next to their home until a storm hits and the falling branches end up damaging the roof of the home. And, along with the destruction to the roof, the resulting damage caused by the water can also mean a lot of heartache for homeowners. Often, all this can be prevented. Using the right equipment to ensure safety, it’s relatively easy to get through some basic chores, such as cleaning out the gutters, that can prevent serious damage to your home if severe weather strikes.

HISTORIC HANDIWORK Some quirky design touches have gone into Martin and Liz Cuthbert’s renovation – a handrail made out of rabbit-proof fence posts and a bolt from the original Fremantle Jetty on the front door

T

HIS was once an 1980s loft home that left a lot to be desired, but now it’s a remarkable creation with modern finishes, coupled with some unique design touches to arouse your interest. Owners Martin and Liz Cuthbert say the original Swanbourne residence was a far cry from what they wanted to live in, so they embarked on an extensive, eight-month renovation project in 2010. “The home was built out of besser blocks and was basically looking very tired and in need of a major renovation,” says Martin, who runs building company Martin Cuthbert Landscapes who undertook the project. “The windows leaked . . . there were so many little problems with it that once you started there was no point in stopping.” Not only did the couple resolve the little problems, they also added some quirky design

HOME

flourishes by incorporating posts from WA’s famous No. 1 rabbit-proof fence and a bolt from the original Fremantle Jetty. The old posts from the rabbit-proof fence were transformed into a stylish handrail that runs along the staircase. And the bolt from the jetty? Well, that became a part of the front-door handle, giving the home a rustic, yet contemporary finish. It is the historic touches and neutral colours that, according to Martin and Liz, have completely transformed the property. “It has quite a warm, inviting feel as, where possible, we have used natural stone and timbers and earthy tones,” Liz says. The kitchen benches, which are made out of bush-hammered granite to create a more subdued finish rather than a glossy one, enhance the “warm, inviting” vibe. Recycled wandoo floorboards and the marri

benchtops in the alfresco area are among the other stunning natural finishes. Upstairs, the once disconnected lounge has been transformed into a parents’ retreat with the addition of a bar, fireplace, master bedroom and ensuite. The kitchen, new lounge room, two bathrooms and three bedrooms are now downstairs. The kitchen opens to the front courtyard and garden, allowing for easier entertaining. The couple say the kitchen and living area is their favourite place to be in because they work really well together. “It’s a really good use of space. It is easy to work in and when having friends and family over for meals, they can migrate to this area,” Liz says. “It is fantastic because when I’m in the kitchen I’m not being left out – I’m still involved in what’s going on.”

The home’s exterior received a facelift, too. Most of the windows were increased in size and relocated to maximise the natural light that hits the property. The entire house was also rendered to give it a modern finish. The renovation ran smoothly and quickly, according to Martin and Liz, because they put a lot of effort into the design and picking the right products. “We stuck to the original plan and that’s why I think it really wasn’t that hard to do,” Liz says. Their renovations were hurried along, however, when the couple discovered they were expecting a baby. “Lots of people have asked what we would do differently and we have responded by saying that there is absolutely nothing we would change,” Liz says. NE of Perth’s go-to stores for home storage solutions has been transformed with a contemporary new design following customer feedback – and the changes complement its range of products perfectly. Howards Storage World in Subiaco is the first store in WA to get a complete makeover, according to master franchisee Rune Johannesson. The flagship store reopened its doors to a brand-new look just over a week ago showcasing the new direction the company is taking. “We are moving away from the original 1980s look for a fresh, light and inviting store layout,” Rune says. The Subiaco store, which was the third store to open in WA, has ditched the old red, blue and black colour scheme for more contemporary colours of turquoise, silver and white. “It creates a much more feminine and attractive shop for customers,” says Rune. “This renovation will give renewed energy for

QUALITY STEEL FRAME HOMES FOR RURAL WESTERN AUSTRALIA AND THE HILLS

Some new-release plants, including crossbred fruit varieties called “Spicezee” and “Cot N Candy”, are set to take Australia by storm

On display

D

URING my latest trip to the Nursery and Garden Industry of Victoria trade day at the Caribbean Gardens and Market in Scoresby, I discovered some sensational new-release plants that are about to become available in garden centres across the country, including Perth. The Melbourne event is the biggest trade market in the southern hemisphere, so for a plant fanatic it’s a must visit. As a younger man I spent countless hours at what was, at the time, an incredibly successful local industry market held under the grandstands at Gloucester Park. Sadly the local industry no longer hosts the market, which makes visiting the Victorian event even more important. This year’s trade day featured releases from leading growers such as Touch of Class Plants, Fleming’s Nurseries and Haar’s Nursery. Haar’s had a couple of plants I was really taken with. The first is a new herb I hadn’t run across before known as Tagetes filifolia and before I tell you its main feature, I will confirm that it’s from the same flower as the african marigold, which is famous for its pungent scent that’s often considered to be an insect deterrent. So telling you that this herb was the source of a flavour sensation I am addicted to probably sounds contradictory. The common name may change your mind though. Known as the licorice herb, it is a rare plant with, as the name suggests, an intense licorice flavour. I found it an attractive fineleaf foliage plant that had little if any foliage aroma, but adding a single leaf to the tongue produced the most amazing licorice flavour.

In March/April the plant produces small, inconspicuous white flowers, but for me it was the fine, compact foliage that was the highlight. The licorice herb only grows to a height of about 30 to 40cm. It’s perennial, but must be overwintered indoors and prefers full sun to partial shade. They also thrive in the shade, but do not grow as lush. These plants are best grown in a good quality garden soil and should be fertilised every three to four weeks with a liquid fertiliser. The delicate, dill-like leaves of this bushy plant are ideal for sweet and salty foods and herbal teas. Apparently it is also great with fish meals, adding a unique taste sensation with

TREVOR COCHRANE the garden guru white-fleshed fish. I thought it would be a wonderful plant for low-calorie snacking between meals because the flavour sensation is just like the sweet, minus the sugar fix. The best news is that local grower Hope Valley Nursery in Oakford has been growing these plants, which should be available in local garden centres soon. Touch of Class Plants launched the new euphorbia Lipstick, a stunning selection of Euphorbia milii discovered by renowned nurseryman Daryl South from Darwin Plant Wholesalers. This plant is compact and less thorny when compared with the traditional forms of this species. Its foliage is luxuriant and covers the plant completely with a soft, emerald green effect that looks fantastic. Its red flowers are set in clusters atop the plant and are so prolific that its smothered at certain times of the year, and it never seems to stop flowering, which is another blessing. This euphorbia is incredibly tough and will be a great pot feature or compact garden shrub. There has been some trouble getting euphorbias introduced into WA because of Department of Agriculture restrictions, but I would expect these will be resolved because this plant has enormous potential in our dry garden environment. Fleming’s Nurseries introduced its latest innovation in interspecific fruit trees. This slightly technical name for naturally crossbred species of popular fruit varieties doesn’t describe the benefits they bring to the home gardener. Developed by natural hand pollination rather than genetic manipulation, the collection

known as F2 hybrids bring complementary fruit varieties together in a single fruit. The breeding enhances the characteristics of complementary fruits and includes various crosses between apricots and plums, and nectarines and plums culminating in new flavours and textures. The first to be released are “Spicezee”, a nectarine-plum cross, and “Cot N Candy”, apricot crossed with plum. Cot N Candy is dominated by the apricot genes. This is reflected in the fruit’s flavour, but with more of a nectarine texture. Spicezees have really tasty, sweet, juicy fruits with an unusual rustic skin. The tree looks similar to a nectarine but has really distinctive purple leaves similar to a plum. The Fleming’s range of fruit trees is sold through Dawson’s Garden World stores. Trevor Cochrane

Q A

Gail Wyatt, of Gnangara, has two plum trees that won’t fruit and some apples trees with up to six fruit in clusters. As far as plums go, they need pollination and attracting bees when they are in flower is a smart move. Planting borage under them is a good idea to attract bees although they may improve with maturity. In their fourth year, mine at home are producing huge crops, which the new holland honeyeaters and parrots love, so we haven’t actually managed to eat any ourselves! Prune plums in winter. Try to remove thin or crossed branches and leave triple buds on older wood as this will end up being fruit. Do not feed until they have fruited and you are about to harvest. As far as the apples go, pick three off each cluster of six and you will end up with larger fruit.

Q A

Carole Montgomery, via email, says her ponytail palm is dying back. The photo she sent in showed a very sadlooking dead head. The problem is puzzling. Ponytails are a water-storing member of the lily family that should handle most conditions. On first inspection, I thought it was overwatering that had done this. It’s not dissimilar to the sort of damage that occurs when a ponytail grows in a pot until it blocks the water escape holes in the base of the pot causing saturation and rotting, but this looks more like a serious pest infestation. I am suspecting mealybug damage. This is identifiable as a white fluffy pest in the leaf sheaths. If it is, adding Confidor tablets in the soil around the roots will control the pest infestation. Check the drainage and cut the dead head off now. Trevor Cochrane

My ‘Mog’ An 850cc side-valve,

two-door Morris Minor, which my brother-in-law and I put together from two wrecks. This photo is the “before image. It cost me $15 to buy and I spent about $100 getting it on the road. 2 Diaries These are my treasured diaries from a trip to Europe with two mates in 1973-74. It was a great adventure. We travelled 12,000km over eight months in “Anna Rosanna, our trusty VW kombi – beer fests, ski trips, the gypsy life. 3 Collector’s port set My wife bought me the set in 1983 when Alan Bond and the team won the America’s Cup in Australia II. It comes with separate prints of all the Aussie challengers over the years. 4 Photo montage of memories I spent 31 years at Channel 7 Perth. I started in 1969 and left in 2000. One of my biggest highlights was when Sir David Brand pulled the lever to go from black and white to colour TV. 5 Dingo mirror My surname was difficult for my mates to pronounce so I became Dingo. That’s how my production company, Dingo Is Talent, evolved and to date we’ve produced 425 episodes of HOME in WA and about 100 episodes of other programs. 6 World War II gunboat helm This is very special and was given to me by my dad about a year Picture: Richard Polden

prior to his passing. It had with it a very special letter from my father. 7

50th birthday album This was put

together by my family and is a snapshot of my life from when I was a young buck to now. I cherish it dearly and love the huge effort my sisters must have put in to create it. 8 Catalina 320 This is my new baby. I love sailing and was taught by John (Jack) Muhling at Claremont Yacht Club. I have owned several Spacesailer 20s and built my second one from scratch. Sailing is the best therapy – there’s no time to ponder the worries of life because you’re too busy focusing. 9 Photos of The Endeavour We recently undertook a cruise from Freo to Sydney on Queen Mary 2 and off Portland – at the southeastern tip of Australia – we caught up with The Endeavour on her circumnavigation of Australia. It was an amazing moment when the old, the replica of Captain Cook’s vessel, was saluted by the most modern ocean liner in the world. 10 The Duyfken video I was given the task of recording footage of her being built from the keel up.

âœą HOME in WA returns to Channel 7 on Saturday, May 12, at 4pm.
