ask our plant Specialist DIRECT MESSAGE US ON FACEBOOK OR INSTAGRAM YOUR PLANT QUESTIONS AND OUR RESIDENT PLANT GURU WILL ANSWER THEM HERE

Q. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR PLANT NEEDS TO BE RE-POTTED? We go by the general rule that every potted house plant should be upgraded to a new bigger home every two years. Most plants outgrow their pots in this time frame. Upgrading will allow for the root system to expand further in the new pot. It then allows for overall better growing and health of your house plants.

Q. WHAT DOES INDIRECT SUNLIGHT MEAN? BECAUSE MY MONSTERA IS STRUGGLING IN ITS SPOT. Indirect light means that it is a source of light that is a diffused light. That is not in a direct source of the suns rays. Usually, this is best next to a window. But back a little just out of the suns rays. If the plant is receiving the direct sun rays, it may be getting too much sunlight and burning the leaves. Try moving the plant to a different position and continue to monitor its health.

Q. WHICH PLANTS ARE BEST FOR A ROOM THAT DOESN’T RECEIVE MUCH NATURAL LIGHT? Here are 15 plants we recommend for a low light room: ZZ Plant, Peace Lilly, Devil’s Ivy, Snake Plant, Philodendron,

Stag Horn, Cathlea, Rubber Plant, Spider Plant, Monstera Deliciosa, Maiden Hair Fern, Cast Iron Plant, Riphsalis & String of Pearls. Although these plants will tolerate a low light position. To allow for more growth and better health, the plants will need a source of sunlight. Maybe place them in a part shade position outside once a week.

Q. HOW DO I PREVENT GNATS FROM LIVING IN THE SOIL OF MY PLANTS? Gnats! The little pests all us house plant lovers dread to see. We like to use cinnamon powder placed around the soil on the top of the pot to scare away the gnats. They hate the smell of it! Another useful tip is to allow the soil to dry out completely in between watering. The little pest loves moist soils. So if they can’t find any, they won’t come looking. You can also get gnat traps online and in various plant shops. Over winter you may see an increase in gnats as the cooler damp weather approaches.

plant of the month: RUBBER PLANT or FICUS ELASTICA

IT’S HARDY. IT LOOKS GREAT. LOW MAINTENANCE AND GROWS QUICK. ITS EVERYTHING YOU’RE LOOKING FOR WITH AN INDOOR PLANT. FOLLOW OUR GUIDE TO KEEP YOURS LOOKING TREMENDOUS, OR USE IT TO UNDERSTAND THE PLANT BEFORE YOU GO OUT AND BUY ONE. BECAUSE IF YOU DON’T HAVE THIS BABY IN YOUR COLLECTION, THEN YOU’RE MISSING OUT !

quite some time. Avoid watering the leaves as calcium stains are evident against the dark leaves. When watering your indoor plants, allow for the water to sit until it becomes to room temperature. This allows for the chlorine to evaporate, protecting your plants roots. If inside your rubber tree can do for a week and a half to two weeks without water. They are super hardy! PROPAGATION

POSITIONING & LIGHT The Burgundy Rubber Tree thrives of a bright indirect, filtered light source. The indirect light helps produce those deep dark burgundy coloured leaves. If your plant is in a shaded position, the leaves grow in a lighter, more flat shade of burgundy or green. It’s due to that lack of sun. Near a bright window is the perfect spot for a ficus burgundy - as long as the sun does not cast its rays directly onto the leaves. WATERING

If you would like to propagate your rubber plant the best way is to take a cutting from a healthy part of the tree. You can choose to place it in water or straight into the soil. Aim to make a cutting about 6 inches in length, with at least four leaves attached. Keep the soil in the pot moist and well drained when potting the cutting. FERTILISING

Allow for your pot to be free draining. The last thing you want is root rot. Ensure your chosen pot has drainage holes. Burgundy Rubber trees are very hardy. They can survive on dry soil for

Fertilise your indoor plant every month during its growing months in spring and summer with

an organic liquid fertiliser. In winter your rubber tree will happily survive without water due to the growing process naturally slowing. PRUNING Rubber trees love to be pruned. They will sprout new limbs out all over the place. So, once it is at the size or height, you want it. Give it the chop. The best time to trim is spring and summer so the plant can grow during its peak growth period. Be aware of sap that will leak from the plant when pruning. Some people are highly allergic to this. PEST & PROBLEMS Mites, mealy bugs and scale can be the biggest threat to the rubber plant. If you catch them early you can wipe them off with warm soapy water. If not, we recommend using something such as ‘White Oil’ which is sprayed onto the affected areas. It also adds a great shine to the plant’s leaves. It is also important to note that your rubber tree is very poisonous to pets and people. Make sure your loved ones don’t have a nibble on your house plant. It won’t end well for all parties. VARIEGATED RUBBER PLANT The variegated version of the rubber plant likes less sun than the burgundy rubber plant. Its important to remember this as variegated rubber plant will burn when placed in the suns direct rays even more than the burgundy version. This generally happens when outside. So using the variegated version inside is your best option to keen it look beautiful. All other care tips for the variegated rubber plant are the same as the burgundy tree.

AIR-CLEANING PLANT The rubber plant is one of the best plants to clean the air in your house. The big rubber leaves allow it to draw in large contaminants, making it efficient at drawing out the nasties in the air. The contaminants are drawn through the plant and dumped into the soil. The microbes in the roots then break down these bad guys removing them from the soil. Leaving your house with fresh clean air!
