ask our plant specialist DIRECT MESSAGE US ON FACEBOOK OR INSTAGRAM YOUR PLANT QUESTIONS AND OUR RESIDENT PLANT GURU WILL ANSWER THEM HERE! Q. HOW FAR FROM THE WINDOW SHOULD MY HOUSE PLANT BE? When placing your indoor plant beside, or close to a window you are aiming to prevent the plant from coming into contact with direct light. So essentially you want your plant to be in indirect light. When placing your plant, aim for bright indirect light. Which is the sunlight that the plant receives when it is just outside of the sun rays coming in the window during the day.

Q. MY FIDDLE LEAF FIG IS STARTING TO LEAN. HOW CAN I PREVENT IT? Your Fiddle Leaf Fig, if in good health could be leaning as it attempt to grow towards the light source where it is placed. One suggestion is to gather a soft piece of string and tie the stem with another stem or to a small garden steak in the pot. You could also try turning the plant towards the opposite direct and encourage it to grow back towards the light.

Q. I’VE PLANTED SOME NEW SUCCULENT CUTTINGS IN A NEW POT OF SOIL. SHOULD I KEEP THE SOIL MOIST FOR THE CUTTING TO STRIKE ROOTS?

Water the cutting in well at first. Then let the top of the soil dry out before watering the cuttings again. Allow the succulents to soak up some morning sun but do not let them stay out in the sun for to long. This will prevent root rot from occurring. Be sure to make sure that you do not bury the leaves so that the cutting has its best chance to strike its roots.

Q. CAN I STORE MY DEVILS IVY ON TOP OF MY FRIDGE? Most certainly, as long as the right amount of light is permitting. Devils Ivy do love low light, just ensure you monitor it receives enough on top of your fridge. As it is warmer up there the soil may dry out quicker than expected.

monthly house plant care tip: How to prevent your house plants from drowning.

Finding the happy medium. That’s what it is all about. When caring for our indoor houseplants we tend to give them a little more loving than not enough. Especially when it comes to watering. If you’ve sadly lost a house plant, its more than likely it’s to overwatering. Too much water leads to soggy soil and soggy roots. Which then leads to root rot. And our indoor plants hate it! Although it’s not the end for your little baby yet. You can save your plant from root rot before it’s too late. As we know, the roots of our plants absorb all the nutrients, water and air and pump it up into the leaves of our plants. Having too much water in the soil prevents this process from functioning to its best ability. Essentially, the water floods the roots and drowns them, if the water does not drain away the roots will rot, killing the plant. To prevent over watering look out for these five things: Wilting leaves, mushy and soggy soil, yellow leaves, leaves dropping off and brown spots. These are key signs your plant is saying no more water! Now, how to rescue your drowning house plant. Firstly, find a spot for your plant that is out of the direct sunlight. Somewhere with part shade to avoid over stressing the plant. Check that your plant has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape. Removing you plant from the pot and placing it on a few pieces of newspaper will also allow the plant

to air out. Although, be careful not to damage the healthy roots in doing so. Once your plant has aired out, you can place it into the same pot or take the opportunity to re-pot your plant. Remove any dead leaves of stems using a pair of quality and clean pruners. Be sure not to apply fertiliser for 1-2 weeks and allow your plant to recover and develop some strong new roots. To prevent your plant from being overwatered again make sure you find the right happy medium for your plants soil. Never be too afraid the stick your finger into the top of the soil and feel the moistness of the top 3cm. if the soil is dry and your finger comes out reasonably clean after the first

3cm then this is a good sign your plant is thirsty. If the soil is moist and your finger comes out with clumps of wet soil on it then avoid watering for another 2-3 days, before rechecking your plants soil. Hot on the market at the moment are soil moistness meters. Grab yourself one of these and use it to check your plants before watering. It will help your plants stay away from drowning. A happy plant is a happy you. Learning to understand your plants and their water intake is vital to keeping your plants strong. Just remember. Keep the soil moist, not dry and not soaked.

plant of the month: monstera deliciosa

Monstera Deliciosa – the in plant you see flooding your social media and littered throughout house magazines. Also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, it’s hard to go wrong with this one. Its an easy grower that needs very little TLC. The glossy green leaves make the perfect statement in any home. Monstera’s come in all sizes there is sure to be one to fit your living room or bedside table. Here is our down-low on the Monstera Deliciosa:

POSITIONING When finding a spot to place your Monstera think warm, think tropical. The Monstera originates from South and central American Jungles. So this little beauty will bring the jungle to you. Situate your Monstera in a warm place inside, away from direct sunlight. In the colder 11 • PERTH HOUSE PLANT COLLECTIVE • FEBRUARY 2019

months move it slightly closer to a window where it can absorb some warmth. Ensuring it doesn’t come into contact with the suns direct rays.

WATERING When it comes to watering, this plant loves a drink. But with all plants avoid over watering to prevent root rot. Allow the first 3cm of the plant to dry out before watering again. In the warmer months apply mist to the leaves of the plant, as it loves humidity this will help it to thrive! Ensure that your pot and soil is well draining.

AERIAL ROOTS The Monstera is a climber! It loves to climb things. Its act in doing so is putting out aerial roots the help it make its way around. You can encourage your Monstera to climb up a trellis or a moss covered pole, otherwise direct them towards the soil of the pot. If need be you can trim the roots. The Monstera may also require a new pot, if it’s had its home for a few years now you’re best to upgrade it to a bigger pot and bury the aerial roots with new soil.

PROPAGATION Monstera’s loves to strike a root! Cuttings should be taken from the most recent stem with at least on root node on the stem. You can choose to place the cutting in water to allow more roots to develop or place the cutting directly into a pot of soil. Make sure no leaves are below the root node, only above.

FERTILISING Fertilise your Monstera on a monthly basis, especially in spring and summer with and organic fertiliser. Ensure to do this in the regular watering routine for your plant to avoid root rot.
