Welcome To

issue 02 march 2019

Well its already time for our second issue – just like that. We had so much great feedback on our first publication! We are glad that you are all loving it as much as we do! And welcome to Autumn. Its time to start thinking about getting our babies ready for winter. We will notice the days starting to get a little colder and the summer sea breeze fading. As the sun moves, you may find the sunny window in your house is no longer as bright as it was. Don’t forget the plants will notice too. They will need a temporary shuffle around. Check out our guide to autumn house plant care inside. In this issue, you will find the same goods as last time, with a different house plant of the month: Devil’s Ivy (Epipremnum aureum). We have also added ‘the plant places directory’ - a list of great little shops, markets and growers that you can source beautiful plants. Okay, that’s enough rambling from me, enjoy the read!

ask our plant specialist DIRECT MESSAGE US ON FACEBOOK OR INSTAGRAM YOUR PLANT QUESTIONS AND OUR RESIDENT PLANT GURU WILL ANSWER THEM HERE! Q. I HAVE A EUPHORBIA TRIGONA, AND IT IS DROPPING ITS LEAVES? THEY ARE YELLOW WHEN THEY FALL. Your Euphorbia trigona may be lacking sun and warmth. Consider where your plant is placed and you may need to move it to a sunnier or warmer position. Your plant should happily return to its good health with a nice dose of sun.

Q. MY FIDDLE NEW LEAF IS SHOWING BROWN SPOTS? WHAT IS THE ISSUE? New growing fiddle leaf fig leaves can grow in a mottled reddish-brown, discolouring is normal for fresh growing leaves. They will grow out as the foliage begins to get bigger and turn into a dark green. No need to worry!

Q. CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST A RANGE OF HOUSE PLANTS THAT WILL DO WELL HERE IN PERTH WITH NORTHERN FACING WINDOW AND A SOUTHERN FACING WINDOW? In Perth during summer, a northern facing window receives a large amount of sun. So you are best finding a plant that loves brightness. Maybe some cacti, or a Devil’s Ivy. A southern facing window will not receive as much sun. So you are looking for a plant that likes part shade - plants such as a Piece Lilly, Spider Plant or a Heart-leaf Philodendron.

Q. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A MONSTERA DELICIOSA ALTHOUGH IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY SPLITS YET. IS THIS NORMAL? Yes, this OK! Your new little monstera will eventually start to split its leaves. Just keep waiting and caring for you new plant as usual. Each new stalk that sprouts out will have more and more splits and holes in it. Enjoy your new monstera!

monthly house plant care tip: GETTING YOUR HOUSE PLANTS READY FOR WINTER THIS AUTUMN. Autumn is here. And before we know it winter will be too. It’s going to start getting cold and damp. As we change into warmer clothes, we also have to change the regime of care for our houseplants. Get our babies ready for the colder months.

of weeks. We all know over-watering is the easiest way to kill cacti. Fertilising: Don’t feed over winter. It may kill your cacti.

Here is our guide on what to do for each main house plant families. Cacti, succulents and tropicals.

CACTI Cacti growing period is during spring and summer. Their growing almost ceases during winter. Light: For best results bring in your cacti from outside as the weather starts to cool and as the angle of the sun coming in the windows changes. You may have to move your plants around inside throughout winter. Temperature: Cold temperatures encourage the dormancy of cacti. Therefore there is no need to stress about your cacti getting cold. Again, windows make a great spot to keep your cacti over winter. Water: Cacti need little to no water during autumn and winter. By little, we mean a slight spray with your mister every couple

SUCCULENTS Succulents are built to hold water in their stems and leaves. It’s the reason we need to take extra care with them over the cooler months. Light: find a position that is well lit. Succulents will love a bright indirect spot

during winter with 3-4 hours of light at least. Avoid dark and gloomy areas. Temperature: Succulents love it warm and toasty. Place them in a room with good heating. Put the plant away from the direct heat source. Make a sound judgment though as we don’t want them to fry. Water: Water the succulents about once a month. Place in the sink and give them a thorough water. Fertilising: Fertilise your succulents now while the weather is still warm enough. They won’t need their next fertilise until next spring. The best time of the year for our plants, inside and out!

Temperature: It’s a given. Tropical plants do not like the cold. Avoid placing these house plants near drafts from windows and doors. Water: Just like the succulents and cacti. Tropical plants need less watering during autumn leading up to winter. Always do the finger test if the first 2-3 cm is dry. Give your house plants a big drink. Humidity: We tend to want to have heaters during the end of autumn. Increased heat leaves our house plants feeling very sad. Grab yourself a misting bottle and mist the plants every few days. This encourages the humidity around them. Fertilising: Tropical plants require little to no fertiliser from autumn to winter. Every couple of months at the most will have them smiling (not literally). We hope this wrap can be used as a useful guide over autumn to help get your house plants ready for winter.

TROPICALS If your house plant is not a cactus or a succulent, then there is a pretty good chance that it falls into the category of ‘tropicals’. Light: Keep the light as consistent as possible. It may mean having to move the plants to a more sunny window. A northern facing window will be good for this. Avoid the gloomy spots.

plant of the month:

devil’s ivy

or, epipremnum

aureum We all know Devil’s ivy, or maybe you call it Golden Pathos or Marble Queen. The real name growers call it is Epipremnum aureum. This trailing beauty is in with the trend at the moment. Easy to grow and easy to maintain. It’s bound to reward you with fabulous foliage. Its evergreen glossy green marble or variegated heart-shaped leaves are hard not to love. Each plant so unique to itself. It’s one that is impossible to kill and easy to enjoy.

POSITIONING Devil’s ivy originates from warm tropical environments. Warm and moist places. It’s the reason it thrives in most indoor positions. Find a place in your home that can provide full to part shade. Inside, Devil’s ivy will take off in a bright place, in a low light spot Devil’s ivy will still grow but at a lot slower rate. It will not survive periods of frost, so bring inside during winter.

WATERING Water your Devil’s ivy once a week. As most indoor plants, they dry out easily indoors. Especially under air-con or beside sunny windows. It’s best to water this one outside. When 11 • PERTH HOUSE PLANT COLLECTIVE • MARCH 2019

watering, also allow for a deep water where the water wellbeing to flow out of the pots drainage holes. It is important that your pot is free draining. Keep the soil moist, check the top of the soil has dried out before watering again. This gorgeous plant can withstand periods of neglect and minimal watering. That is why we love this beautiful plant so much!

PROPAGATION & SOIL One of the easiest plants to propagate. Cut a piece of the plant below a root node. You can either place this cutting in a glass of water or, put into a pot of soil. We recommend putting in water first; then once roots begin to grow, plant the propagated cutting into your desired pot of soil. The best soil is a light, porous soil. Well-draining is best to prevent the roots from rotting.

FERTILISING Fertilise between every few drinks of water with a general purpose liquid house plant fertiliser. As usual, fertilise in the warmer months and when transferring the plant from one pot to another. Reduce feeding to a minimum in the colder months around winter. Don’t fret if you do not fertilise your Devil’s ivy as it is highly durable.

PRUNING Although it is easy to fall in love with the growth of your Devil’s ivy, it is essential to prune it to encourage healthy foliage occasionally. The longer it grows the further apart the leaves become. Pruning prompts the plant to develop bushier. Photo credit: @plntdude

Our scale of difficulty to maintain EASY 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 HARD

The most important consideration is that Devil’s ivy is poisonous to cats and dogs. Avoid placing where animals can reach the plant. Place it up high instead. It is also essential that if you have an allergic reaction to sap that you wear gloves when handling the plant.
