he short answer is: Yes, of course it does, but since I have a 400 word-count I’m going to give you some solid examples.
Locally your Chamber works on a number of issues, both on a short-term and an ongoing basis. Apart from providing the business perspective on the news of the day, our stance on the Trent Severn Waterway helped convince the government to cancel their plans to modify the boating season this year and hear from the key stakeholders who do business along the Waterway. Public Square to the Police Services’ Budget. We were very proud to be named the “Partner of the Year” by the New Canadians Centre, and have been extremely active on the issue of immigrant integration. We continue to support the Shining Waters Railway Corporation and the extension of the 407. On the broader scale, with initiatives like the Prosperity Round Table and the Government Affairs Committee, as well as the work of our regular monthly Policy Committee, we emphasize cooperation between the various levels of government, and a continual focus on business, the economic engine of the economy. As a member of both the Ontario and the Canadian Chambers of Commerce, we are active (very active actually) with both the provincial and federal governments. Federally the Chamber network has convinced the government to: - Limit employer EI premium rate increases to 7cents per $100, saving business $750 million in 2011/12. - Lower the general Corporate Income Tax rate from 16.5% in 2011 to 15% in 2012, saving business $1.5 billion per year. - Introduce a bilateral commitment to improve the efficiency of Canada-US Border operations. - Launch a Red Tape Reduction initiative.
Provincially the Chamber Network has convinced the government to: - Establish a formal Business Sector Strategy, which so far has met on six sectors: o Building and Land Development o Manufacturing o Medical Technology o Information and Communications Technology o Agriculture and Agri-Food o Hospitality - Commit to a balanced budget by 2017. - Endorse our “Emerging Stronger – A Transformative Agenda for Ontario” Report, which recommends five key strategies for Ontario: o Focus on innovation and productivity o Build a 21st Century workforce o Restore fiscal balance o Take advantage of the global economy o Invest in our key competitive advantages So yes, lobbying works, of course it does.

ast September, just before I started my position as Tradeshow Coordinator, I was asked to stop by and check out the Prosperity Tradeshow to see what the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce was all about. I had a pretty good idea already, but the Prosperity Tradeshow is what really put it all into perspective for me. After walking out of that show, I was excited to be a part of this organization with an amazing membership and I could not wait to start work the next week! Wellness Expo - Wrap-up

n Saturday, May 5th, the Chamber of Commerce held the 5th Annual Peterborough Wellness Expo at the Evinrude Centre from 10am-5pm. The Expo was full of a diverse range of vendors, with everything from yoga, meditation and Reiki to chiropractic care, massage and fitness. Throughout the day, there were workshops and speakers who presented different topics and then participated in a question and answer period with the audience. There were also demonstrations over the course of the day where attendees were invited to participate or simply observe.

Vendors, attendees and staff enjoyed some delicious food from Stickling’s Bakery and some organic coffee from Kyoto Coffee. It was the first year for the Chamber to run the Wellness Expo and the feedback we received from vendors, speakers and demonstrators was that it was a very well-organized event and everyone had a great day!

Are We Ready?
ore than one hundred people attended the May 10th event “Are We Ready for the Next Pandemic?” to learn about the present state of pandemic planning locally and provincially. They also received an update from the Peterborough County-City Health Unit on potentially dangerous influenza viruses currently circulating the globe. “When discussing the next pandemic, the concern is not if it will happen, but when,” said Dr. Rosana Pellizzari, Medical Officer of Health and one of the presenters. “Since the influenza virus is always changing, getting your flu shot every year is one of the best ways people can prepare themselves because the vaccine contains the current strains that are actually circulating.” Current influenza strains of concern to public health officials include H5N1, also known as the avian flu, which has been identified in Indonesia, Cambodia and Egypt. While this strain only sporadically infects people, it has a high fatality rate so scientists are closely monitoring it to watch for any increase in its ability to spread from human to human. Dr. Pellizzari commended local health organizations for their high level of cooperation during the H1N1 pandemic and their continued collaboration to ensure monitoring and response systems are in place to take action the next time a pandemic virus strikes our community.

She also noted the latest scientific developments in vaccine production including new methods involving plants that enable vaccines to be replicated in days instead of growing antigens in eggs which takes months. Margaret Jay, Infection Control Lead for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, presented the hospital’s incident management system which includes stockpiling anti-virals and medical supplies in addition to mapping out how it handles capacity surges when significant health events arise. She also stressed the importance of seeking out credible sources of information as a way to be prepared for the next pandemic.

LUNCHBoxlearning April “20 Days to Great Customer Service” Barb Bruce of MyRadius Consulting Services spoke to a group of about 20 small business owners for an hour in April about the importance of excellent customer service. Barb touched on some of the key portions of her normal three hour seminar entitled “Knock Their Socks Off Service”. With some take home exercises and a 20-day plan for service greatness, attendees were pushed to accept nothing but greatness when it comes to customer service. YPG was fortunate to host the May Business After Hours at The Venue and held our annual YPG Tradeshow. Tutoring is basically re-teaching and reviewing what has been taught in class. This assumes that your child has no problem actually understanding concepts and content. Academic Upgrading is for when your child is performing in school significantly below grade level, perhaps being moved to the next grade without mastering the concepts and content of the previous grade --- a standardized academic assessment is needed to determine the missed skills. An individualized, academic program can target these areas and bring the student up to their grade level. Brain Training is a helpful tool if you help your child with their homework and they just can’t seem to grasp the concept, or if you need to repeat content because it is forgotten the next day. Also if your child repeatedly gets frustrated and shuts down or refuses to learn, then quite likely there is a learning difficulty. Brain training can improve weak cognitive skills such as short and long-term memory, auditory and visual processing, attention and reasoning. This time, the Young Professionals Group segment of the Chamber had the chance to introduce themselves to a large number of members with a special YPG Tradeshow held at The Venue. Small businesses, especially ones owned by those under 40, don’t always have the budget or resources to staff a typical tradeshow. Everyone had a great time showcasing their businesses and learning a lot about each other.

Developing Ontario’s First Ever Immigration Strategy The Ontario government has announced that the province will develop its first-ever immigration strategy to help build a stronger economy. A new expert roundtable led by Julia Deans and including Allan O’Dette, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC), will help develop the strategy and examine ways that immigration can best support Ontario’s economic development and help New Ontarians find jobs. Ontario remains the number one destination for newcomers to Canada yet it is the only province currently without an immigration agreement with the federal government. A Wellness Program may seem like a superficial benefit to a business owner who keeps a watchful eye on their firm’s overhead and expenses, but there are very good reasons for an employer to consider implementing one. Employee absenteeism due to lifestyle related illnesses is quite common today and costs Canadian businesses significant money in lost production. I have read that hypertension, lung cancer and adult-onset diabetes accounts for as much as 90% of health care costs in Canada. According to a Statistics Canada study physical inactivity also impacts health care costs as fewer Canadians are taking part in physical exercise that provides cardiovascular benefits. With new technologies and the downsizing of businesses in order to remain competitive, the fear of layoffs, concerns about job security, hiring freezes and financial well-being are causes of increased stress and anxiety by employees who must carry heavier workloads. Disability claims and drugs prescribed for the treatment of stress and anxiety increase at a precarious rate every year. As costs for prescription drugs increase faster than the rate of inflation and provincial governments continue to reduce funding of health care services, thereby shifting medical costs to private benefit plans, employers will continue to pick up the costs through higher premiums. Case studies indicate that employers who introduce Wellness Programs that encourage regular fitness and exercise will benefit by reduced absenteeism, as well as employees with more positive attitudes. Other components of Wellness Programs include nutrition and weight management, back care and repetitive strain injury prevention, stress management, smoking cessation and health education. To implement a successful program three steps need to be taken: 1. Conduct a workplace health audit; 2. Conduct an employee health audit; and 3. Develop a strategic plan. I would agree that there is a direct link between an employee’s mental and physical well-being and job performance. Of course it would be ideal to have an in-house gym at the workplace, but organizing a daily 20-minute brisk walk during the lunch hour can easily be done with no start-up costs and in a very short period of time could pay big dividends.
