IMMIGRATIONmatters
byMichael VanDerHerberg: Facilitator of the Workplace Integration Centre
w
Workplace Integration hy should Peterborough employers integrate skilled immigrants into their workplace? Consider these four important reasons as a business case for diversity within a Peterborough context: 1. The Canadian-born workforce is shrinking and the demand for skilled labour is growing. 2. Skilled immigrants can help companies in Peterborough do business with the world. 3. Skilled immigrants bring higher levels of education and have innovative, international expertise. 4. The local market is changing as more immigrants settle in the Peterborough area. Diversity is the mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, perspectives, beliefs and competencies, as valuable assets to the groups and organizations with whom they interact. Fostering human resources practices that are reflective of
and responsive to a diversity of communities is good for business, because the face of business is changing. In this light, consider the story of Sandra Arroyo, a foreigntrained professional from Ecuador. She has two business

diplomas, a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, and another Bachelors Degree in Finance. From managing an import-export company to working as an intermediary between store owners and suppliers as a Purchasing and Inventory Manager, Sandra has a wealth of knowledge to offer the Peterborough business community.
…a diversity of communities is good for business, because the face of business is changing
Sandra arrived in Canada in June of 2008 and spent a year looking for employment in Peterborough. With limited English proficiency and no Canadian work experience, finding an employer to consider her credentials did not happen quickly. As the employment counsellor at the New Canadians Centre, I met Sandra in June of 2009. At the same time, I approached Eric Monkman of Monkman Gracie & Johnston Insurance Brokers and suggested a mentoring program opportunity that brings foreigntrained professionals and established professionals together in occupationspecific mentoring relationships. Collaborating with Eric, we developed a short-term voluntary work placement, designed to provide Canadian work experience for a foreign-trained professional. Three candidates were chosen for an interview. Sandra was selected. Within two months, MG&J requested to hire Sandra on a full-time basis. Two months was enough time to showcase Sandra’s rich organizational skills, her attention to detail, and her wealth of knowledge from her education and work experience in Ecuador. This is the work of the Workplace Integration Centre; connecting talented foreign-trained professionals and Peterborough employers. Building on the success that collaborative efforts with employers can bring, the Workplace Integration Centre will:
• Provide employers and foreigntrained professionals with appropriate tools and resources to aid in immigration, accreditation, and licensing issues. • Increase awareness and capacity for employers to attract, hire, and retain foreign-trained professionals.
The Workplace Integration Centre is located at the New Canadians Centre. This initiative is funded through the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce www.workplaceintegration.ca.
• Help foreign-trained professionals achieve their career goals through meaningful employment.
Pure_card-vertical-press.pdf
• Assist employers with creating a culture of inclusion within the workplace. The official launch of the Workplace Integration Centre will take place at 10:00 AM on September 22nd, 2010 at the Peterborough Chamber of C Commerce. Please join us on that M morning to learn more about the Workplace Integration Centre or visit Y our site at www.workplaceintegration.ca. If you have questions, please contact CM Michael VanDerHerberg at michael@ MY nccpeterborough.ca or drop by the New Canadians Centre to speak to him CY directly. CMY
The Workplace Integration Centre is K funded in part by Global Experience @ Work, an initiative of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, with support and funding from the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.

10 Digit Dialing is Coming to Our Area n January 15, 2011 everyone in the 705 area code will have to dial 10 digits in order to make a local phone call. Most other area codes in North America made this change years ago. 911 calls will not be affected. Between January 15th and March 5th if you make a 7 digit phone call, a Bell reminder message will be heard before the call is put through. After March 5th a 7 digit phone call will not be completed. This change is being made to accommodate more phone numbers, in the form of a new area code. As of March 19th, 2011 area code 249 will be added to the existing 705 area.
This change will affect businesses in many different ways. In addition to normal phone calls becoming 10 digits, if they are not already 10 digits, the following will have to be reprogrammed before January 15th, 2011:
any 7 digit automated calls from being completed. The Bell Canada network is now able to accept 10 digit dialing. It would be a good idea to make these dialing changes now rather than rushing at the last minute.
• Phone system speed dialing • Fax machines
After March 5th a 7 digit phone call will not be completed
• Computer modems • Cell phones • Security systems • Medical alarms
Full Service Law Firm • Real Estate & Mortgages • Commercial & Business Law • Personal Injury • Family Law & Divorce • Wills & Estates • Wrongful Dismissal • Charity & Non-Profit Law • Criminal Law
Free Consultation • Motor Vehicle Accident • Personal Injury • Slip and Fall
• Any auto dial systems • Elevator phones • Telephone type intercom systems The 10 digit deadline, for the equipment mentioned above, is actually January 15th and not March 5th. These are machines, and after January 15th, the automated Bell Canada reminder message will stop

ccording to a recent Certification Magazine Salary Survey that included more than 40,000 responses from IT professionals in over 150 countries, more than 85% of respondents agree that since they became certified, there is a greater demand for their skills. More than 86% also report that achieving certification has increased their productivity on the job. 96% from the top five countries with the highest salaries said they were certified.
What are the benefits of becoming Microsoft Office Certified?
A recent survey by International Data Corporation found:
➢• Individuals will be more competitive in the job market ➢• Hiring certified workers and certifying existing employees will maximize a company’s return on investment ➢• Simplify hiring by requiring certification and insure candidates’ qualifications ➢• Measurement of staff training ➢• Program can be individualized and self directed on-site or offsite.
➢• 75% of all administrative employees require either moderate or advanced Microsoft Office skills. • 40% of supervisors report that MOS certified employees are a valuable resource to other employees ➢• 89% of certified employees do not require additional supervision to perform their duties. ➢

• 25% of “bad hires” fail on the job due to inadequate computer or administrative skills. “Bad hire” costs 1-2 times the employee’s salary. July Cameron Taylor of BOATsmart! emphasized to us the importance to always use common sense, “leave your beer on the peer” and to always wear a life jacket while boating. He spoke to us of ways to prevent accidents while out on the water. He talked about the new guidelines and upgraded testing coming in the fall. CHEX television was there to interview Cameron after the breakfast. Those in attendance received BOATsmart! study guides as well as complimentary certificates to complete their boating exam. Thanks Cameron, that was a great gesture on your part! August Mayor Paul Ayotte was our guest speaker this month. His main presentation was on the infrastructure taking place in our area to the sum of $51 million. One of those projects mentioned was the Hunter Street Bridge. The Peterborough Airport is taking up the biggest portion of it at $28 million. He updated us on the poverty committee’s work and said that there will be an appeal for business to help out in providing a solution. There were 43 in attendance today, great turnout. What a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outstanding food prepared by the Executive Chef and Team Cuisine of Holiday Inn. The sheer number of Chamber members and guests is evidence that this really has become one of the most enjoyable social events of the season.
The friendly and courteous personnel of the Holiday Inn set an admirable standard of hospitality which is reflected in everything they do. Many enjoyed this so much they chose to extend the evening to enjoy the Gazebo Bar and Grill overlooking the beautiful Otonabee River. This was an outstanding and simply fun event thanks to Terry Merrill and the Holiday Inn team. Thanks for being such wonderful hosts.

marketing Celebrating 5 Years in Business! By Debbie Smith, Sign-A-Rama, Peterborough Celebrating their fifth year in business, Sign-A-Rama Peterborough is a full-service sign shop that manufactures and installs interior and exterior signage. With a focus on quality and superior customer service, they produce a wide spectrum of signage, including: banners, digital graphics, vehicle graphics, outdoor and indoor signs, exhibit signs, 3D channel letters, illuminated LED and neon signs. With their two bucket trucks, they provide installation, maintenance and repairs for all illuminated electrical signs. Sign-A-Rama has recently added a new piece of equipment to their business – an HP SCITEX 950 Flatbed printer. It can print on almost anything – coroplast, aluminum, carpets, doors, tiles, glass and acrylics; up to 90” in width, on materials up to 2 ½” thick. “The printer allows us to get our jobs done faster at a cost saving to our customers, and to do a greater variety of work,”says Debbie.
The new printer will also mean that they can wholesale their products to other sign companies in the area. “We are very proud to be a part of the Peterborough business community, and appreciate all the support we have received over the past 5 years. We are looking ahead and staying positive as we head into a new year of opportunities,” says Smith. Sign-A-Rama is located at 774 Rye St., with a large showroom for customers to browse products and samples. benefacts by Brian Bulger
Accidental Death & Dismemberment A Little Known Benefit with Big Value In a matter of seconds, an accident can drastically change a life and if that accident happens to one of your employees your Chambers Plan can offer support. Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) is a benefit that offers a lump sum payment in the event of death, loss of limb, or any qualified injury resulting from an accident. Benefits are paid out in addition to other types of coverage, so in the event of loss of limb for instance, an insured might receive disability payments as well as an AD&D payment. In the case of an accidental death, an insured’s beneficiary would receive the traditional group life insurance benefit as well as a second, equal amount through the AD& D coverage. When a serious injury occurs, an employee will likely face many challenges as they recuperate. To help recovery, the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan AD&D benefit will cover up to $15,000 of expenses for your occupational training. And up to an additional $5,000 is available if special adaptive equipment or workplace modifications are required for the injured employee.
Together these payments can form the foundation of a program to help the employee re-enter the workplace after an accident. But AD&D benefits aren’t limited to the workplace. Recognizing that an injury can affect how the individual interacts with his or her surroundings, there is a benefit that will pay up to $50,000 to modify a home or vehicle, when a wheelchair becomes necessary as a result of an accident. This money can be used to offset the cost of projects like ramp installation, changes to the layout of the house, and vehicle control modification. With the Chamber’s Plan, AD&D benefits are extensive and included in every benefit package. It is an often overlooked benefit, but can provide vital support at a critical time.
