The map of Europe has been redrawn several times during the XXth century, in peaceful or violent ways, and the shifting of borders has often been associated with forced migrations. But despite the fact that this has been the fate of millions of Europeans, the memory of it has so far received little attention beyond national borders. This book examines how hosting states and societies, as well as groups that were forced to leave, deal with the memory of the loss in the long term. It explores the politics of history and the conflicting interpretations of the loss associated with forced migrations. In a comparative and diachronic approach, the book depicts the interactions between the actors involved in the politics of history: their motivations, their resources and the public they seek to address. It looks at the different contexts in which these actors evolve and traces the changes of these politics in time and space. It shows how the memory of territorial loss associated with forced migrations interferes with the present and how it has evolved within the political constrains of good neighborhood as well as of European and international standards that have emerged since the end of the cold war. By confronting case studies in Europe and at its margins, the book questions the emergence of more inclusive collective memories and memory cultures. It is a significant contribution to a comparative approach on forced migrations and politics of history relating to loss. Anne Bazin is associate professor of political sciences at Sciences Po Lille, where she is director of the Master’s program in Advanced European and International Studies. She works on post-conflict reconciliation as well as transitional justice. Catherine Perron is assistant research professor with tenure at Sciences Po, Centre for international Studies (CERI) in Paris. Her current research focuses on politics of history and memory in Germany and in Central Europe in relation with forced migrations.

Au sortir de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’Europe libérée est traversée par une même soif de justice à l’égard des anciens ennemis et de leurs collaborateurs. Ce livre interroge ce « moment 1945 » comme une expérience, sinon totalement commune, du moins largement partagée par delà la coupure Est-Ouest du continent qui s’installe rapidement. Dans une perspective d’histoire comparée, son objectif premier est de faire dialoguer des historiographies nationales des « épurations » déjà riches mais qui s’ignorent le plus souvent. Au-delà, le pari de cet ouvrage collectif réside dans sa capacité à proposer de manière originale les bases d’une histoire connectée et transnationale des épurations européennes. Pour ce faire, les auteurs portent une attention particulière aux phénomènes de circulation et de transferts en matière de normes, de pratiques, voire d’acteurs des épurations, puis des « dés-épurations ». De même, ils accordent une place privilégiée aux populations « déplacées » dans ce contexte, en considérant les expulsés, exilés et réfugiés comme un autre phénomène marquant de l’histoire chaotique de l’Europe post-1945 qu’il convient de relier à l’histoire des épurations.

The book offers a transnational perspective on history of communism in East-Central Europe. It analyzes the political, economic, and cultural dimensions of communist systems and focuses on different forms of resistance and ways of its remembering. The transnational look is manifested through an analysis of the usefulness of the models applied in research of the past, an investigation of some historical phenomena in the context of mutual relations between particular countries (e.g. Poland and East Germany), republics of Soviet Union (Lithuania, Moldova, and Russia) and between the East and the West relations (peace movement in Poland and Netherlands). Moreover, selected aspects of the past (consumerism in Bulgaria or economic management in Romania) are analyzed with the use of categories useful in transnational research.

La construction de généalogies, d’armoriaux ou d’histoires familiales permet de conjurer la rupture révolutionnaire ou « l’usurpation » dynastique, tandis que les pèlerinages, auprès des princes en exil, sur des tombeaux ou sur des sites de bataille, se doublent souvent d’une collecte de souvenirs et de reliques. Les contributions réunies dans ce volume témoignent de l’émergence, à l’échelle européenne, d’une véritable contre-culture historique, fondée sur la célébration de la fidélité, érigée en vertu politique fondamentale face à « l’opportunisme libéral » et à la « subversion révolutionnaire ». Tout autant qu’aux supports – livres, monuments ou musées –, une grande attention a été portée aux acteurs de cette « histoire en blanc », leurs circulations et leur insertion dans les réseaux contre-révolutionnaires de leur temps.

Quelle fut la perception et l’interprétation du national-socialisme comme idéologie et comme pratique du pouvoir dans l’Europe francophone et germanophone entre le début des années 1920 et la fin des années 1940? Telle est la question au centre de la série de six volumes inaugurée en 2017 et qui propose une typologie des regards et des savoirs relatifs au national-socialisme et des interprétations suscitées par celui-ci à travers l’analyse systématique de monographies, de journaux et de revues représentatifs de l’opinion et des milieux intellectuels des pays intéressés. Le présent volume, troisième de la série, s’intéresse aux positions adoptées par les différents courants et partis de gauche. Il propose des études relatives à des interprétations du national-socialisme ainsi que d’autres centrées sur la vision de ce mouvement politique diffusée par une série de périodiques représentatifs. Wie werden Ideologie, Etablierung und Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus in den deutsch- und französischsprachigen Räumen Europas vom Beginn der 1920er bis zum Ende der 1940er Jahre wahrgenommen, bewertet und erklärt? In sechs systematisch angelegten Bänden, der erste erschien 2017, werden diese Fragen anhand einer exemplarischen Auswahl von Büchern, Zeitungen und Zeitschriften ebenso untersucht wie die unterschiedlichen Deutungen des Nationalsozialismus in seiner Epoche und den unmittelbaren Jahren nach seinem Ende. Im Zentrum des dritten Bandes steht die Linke in ihren unterschiedlichen ideologischen Ausprägungen. Die Beiträge lassen den Schluss zu, dass mentale Zugänge aus Umfeldern orthodoxer Traditionen anders profiliert sind als solche aus katholisch-protestantischen Traditionen. Schließlich wird auch ersichtlich, wieviel Zuwendung in der Forschung noch erforderlich ist, um der Komplexität dieser Themenstellung gerecht zu werden.

Der zweite deutsch-französische Städtepartnerschaftsboom (1985-1994) Akteure, Motive, Widerstände und Praxis

This collection of essays presents a study of migration cultures in the contemporary Mediterranean with a particular focus on Italy as a point of migratory convergence and pressure. It investigates different experiences of, and responses to, sea crossings, borders and checkpoints, cultural proximity and distance, race, ethnicity and memory, along with creative responses to the same. In dialogic and complementary interaction, the essays explore violence centring on race as the major determining factor. The book further submits that the interrogation of racialized categories represents different kinds of critical response and resistance, which involve both political struggle and day-to-day survival and coexistence. Following the praxis of cultural and postcolonial studies, the essays focus on the present but draw indispensable insight from past connections and heritage as well as offering prognoses for the future. The ambitious aim of this collection is to identify some useful lines of thought and action that could help us to think outside intricacy, isolation and defensiveness, which characterize most of the public official reactions to migration today. Claudia Gualtieri is Assistant Professor of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures (Cultural Studies and Postcolonial Theory) at the University of Milan.

Auch wenn der Fokus auf den Jahren 1985 bis 1994 liegt, zeigen die Schlussfolgerungen aktuelle Trends auf und bieten verschiedene Erklärungsansätze für die weltweit einmalige Anzahl von deutsch-französischen Partnerschaften.

This volume is an edited collection of original essays on spiritual travel in medieval and early modern Europe. Pilgrimage was a central feature of medieval and early modern Christianity. But holy travel was not only a physical act, it was also an interior disposition and a spiritual process. From at least the late Antique period, the life of a Christian was understood allegorically as a journey towards heaven. Also, many people could not travel: enclosed orders of monks and nuns, men and women with responsibilities tying them to localities, the sick and frail. Virtual travel was instead

Thus spiritual pilgrimage, instead of or alongside physical pilgrimage, became prominent in medieval Europe and survived the Reformation in both Protestant and Catholic traditions. These essays show that this experience took many forms: a lively imagining of a journey with holy people or to holy places; an «out-of-body» experience such as the revelations of St Bridget of Sweden; guided journeys; meditations upon holy places such as Jerusalem; and travel in reconstructed landscapes, from the Monti Sacri reconstitutions to convent churches. The volume includes an historiographical introduction by the editors and nine case studies of spiritual journeys, drawn from across the late medieval and early modern periods and from different regions of Europe.

When German troops marched into Poland on 1 September 1939, this also affected sport – sometimes dramatically. Official propaganda no longer viewed football as a game that was played for fun, but one that could be instrumentalized for political goals and military strategy. Due to the unpredictability of the game, football did not appear to be well suited to such a purpose. However, as the sport was able to create a politically neutral space that offered exciting entertainment and an escapist distraction, it was eminently important for the dictatorship. Soldiers and the civilian population benefited from this, as did the National Socialist regime itself. Football was vital for the war effort and also helped to stablilize the system precisely because it was not a vehicle for political propaganda. In this edited volume, an international team of authors examines the development of football during the Second World War in a dozen European states. The volume concludes with essays on the representation of the topic in the arts and the media. Markwart Herzog PhD is a philosopher of religion and sports historian and director of the Schwabenakademie Irsee. He works on topics related to the history of religion and history of sport. His main research interests include the cultural history of football, the commemorative and funerary culture of club football, the history of women’s football, sport in the National Socialist period and the media history of sport. Fabian Brändle PhD is a historian and author with a research focus on «history from below», the history of folk and mass culture, the history of poverty, the history of childhood and youth, the history of the two world wars, Alsace, Tyrol and Ireland as well as the social and cultural history of sport, football and ice hockey in Switzerland.

The complex intertwining of history, memory, space, place and identity in borderlands is the topic of this edited collection. Using a transnational analysis of multi-layered cases from the northern Adriatic and Central Europe, the essays address fundamental questions in the history of the twentieth century. The geographical areas under scrutiny have experienced regular re-drawings of political borders, reconfigurations of state orders, and changes in ideological frameworks. The symbolic boundaries that formed the mental map of the modern world were located here: West vs East, Latin vs German vs Slavic, European vs Oriental, antifascism vs fascism, capitalism vs communism, etc. These symbolic dimensions influence the local reality, intersecting with international developments and global processes. How these changes in ideology, state and the resulting spatial politics have functioned within varying historical frameworks, and what we can learn from their changing meanings, is the main focus of this volume. Its content represents a privileged perspective on understanding ruptures as well as continuities in memory cultures, commemorative practices, situational identifications and the varying politics of the past in European borderlands. Borut Klabjan is Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence and Senior Research Fellow at the Science and Research Centre in Koper. He graduated from the University of Trieste and received his PhD from the University of Ljubljana. In 2011 he was Humboldt Fellow at the Institute for South-East Europe at the Humboldt University in Berlin and in 2014 at the Institute for East and Southeast European Studies in Regensburg. His work addresses themes of political, diplomatic and cultural history, memory, border and minority issues in nineteenth and twentieth century Europe.

Since the fateful referendum in 2016, Brexit dominates British politics. This book focuses on the parliamentary discourse of the allegedly most pro-European British political party, the Liberal Democrats. Combining a political discourse analysis with a Cultural Studies perspective, it scrutinises the party leaders’ contributions to parliamentary debates on European integration regarding the arguments they advanced to justify their position from 1997–2010 and the verbal images they used to describe both Europe and Britain. The study’s results contribute to understanding the current dynamics in British politics: sending mixed messages at best, the pro-European actors failed to make a convincing and coherent case for a common European future in the past.

When the Peninsular War ended in 1814, the prolonged struggle had all but exhausted both British government finances and the British public’s enthusiasm for war. The authoritarian rule of Ferdinand VII aroused longstanding British suspicions of Spanish ways, which emerged in British literary works that depicted a retrograde, fanatical Spain. The tumultuous years following Ferdinand’s reign also led to divisions among the European powers, some favouring the restoration of Ferdinand, with the British government and liberal forces vehemently opposed. This diverse volume focuses on British reactions to, and representations of, Spanish affairs during this lively period (1814–1823). It demonstrates both Spain’s visibility in Regency Britain and the consequent inspiration and dialectical activity of British politicians, artists and intellectuals. It does so through a combination of literary, social, historical and cultural perspectives that bring both fresh light to this formative period of nineteenth-century British attitudes to Spain and a wealth of new scholarly material.

Mutating Idylls examines the surprising presence of the antique literary topos of the idyllic landscape, the locus amoenus, in European literature from the latter half of the nineteenth century. The book sets out to identify how this topos, which generally has no place in politically and socially realistic and naturalist literature, actually does have a role to play. Chapters on central nineteenth-century authors such as Flaubert, Zola, Fontane, Verga, Hamsun, Austen, Eliot, Wilde, Jiménez, Cernuda, and Galdós demonstrate both the presence and the multiple refunctionalizations of the locus amoenus. The theoretical aim of Mutating Idylls is to rehabilitate the notion of literary topos. This feature is present in the introduction as a possibility in literary studies today. The chapters all argue in the direction of a notion of topos, which is more flexible than the one Curtius defines along the lines of formula or cliché. In this way, the book intervenes in at least three major fields of study: nineteenth-century studies, classical philology, and literary theory. Through empirical analyses covering diverse authors who all, more or less unconsciously, use the locus amoenus, Mutating Idylls offers a new understanding of the culture of writing in the nineteenth century and contributes to literary theory a rehabilitation of the important notion of the topos.

Over the last years no other topic has dominated the political debate in Europe like the migration crisis did. In 2016 migrations flows across the Mediterranean Sea were at its height. The author compares the legal system in three European countries: Germany, England and France, addressing the legitimacy of the prohibition on religious symbols in public education. For assessment of the legal position of the right to religious freedom and the safeguard offered to religious rights in the different states, the author analyzed the following parameters: state-church relations, identification of unique and central constitutional norms and principles, observation of the historical role and position of religion in the educational system of each of the states and a review of case laws delivered by domestic courts. Finally, the author considered the possibility of a unified, aligned European solution that will be enforceable on the member states by virtue of their obligation to abide by the European Convention on Human Rights.

Nicht erst seit der Brexit-Debatte wird die Europäische Union dafür kritisiert, den Zugang von nichterwerbstätigen Unionsbürgern zu Sozialleistungen zu fördern. Der Autor nimmt diese Kritik zum Anlass um einen Grundsatz der sozialen Vergünstigung für nichterwerbstätige Unionsbürger im Unionsrecht nachzuweisen. Zur Bestimmung der Ausgestaltung eines solchen Grundsatzes nutzt der Autor das in Deutschland durch Robert Alexy eingeführte Regel-/Prinzipienmodell. Er zeigt auf, dass sich ein Grundsatz der sozialen Vergünstigung bei der Menschenwürde und dem Solidaritätsprinzip im Unionsrecht verorten lässt, gleichzeitig aber auch mit Letzterem und dem Subsidiaritätsprinzip kollidiert.

Das Anhörungsrecht der Drittbeteiligten im europäischen Beihilfeverfahren ist derzeit nur auf das förmliche Prüfverfahren beschränkt. Hingegen wird die weit überwiegende Zahl der Verfahren im Vorprüfungsverfahren beendet. Der Autor untersucht die Auswirkungen der Kodifizierung des Rechtes auf gute Verwaltung in Art. 41 GrCh auf die Verfahrensrechte im Beihilfeverfahren. Er kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Verfahrensrechte der Konkurrenten, aber auch der Beihilfeempfänger durch die Verfestigung dieses Rechtes in der Grundrechtecharta eine Aufwertung erfahren haben. Der Band zeigt Wege auf, wie das auf zügige Erledigung ausgerichtete Vorprüfungsverfahren grundrechtskonform reformiert und der Rechtsschutz im Verwaltungsverfahren durch ein Widerspruchsverfahren verbessert werden können.

Am 18. Januar 2017 sind die wesentlichen Inhalte der «europäischen Kontenpfändungsverordnung» in Kraft getreten. Daher beleuchtet die Untersuchung die Rechtslage zur vorläufigen Kontenpfändung in den Mitgliedstaaten, um Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede herauszuarbeiten. Zudem werden bestehende und geplante Regelungen auf europäischer Ebene analysiert, um die nun in Kraft getretene Kontenpfändungsverordnung zu bewerten, aber auch die Möglichkeiten zur Effektuierung der grenzüberschreitenden vorläufigen Kontenpfändung zu eruieren. Als Alternative wird – anders als dem Ansatz der Kommission zu folgen – untersucht, ob sich ein europäisches Verfahren zur vorläufigen Kontenpfändung in das bestehende Gefüge der EuGVVO einfügen könnte.

Eindrücklich hat uns zuletzt die Flüchtlingskrise 2015 vor Augen geführt, dass die Migrationsfrage eine der zentralen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit ist. Vorläufige Kontopfändungen stellen auf nationaler Ebene ein wesentliches Element des effektiven Rechtsschutzes dar. Im grenzüberschreitenden Rechtsverkehr erwiesen sie sich bisher jedoch als wenig praktikabel. Dem soll mit der Verordnung (EU) Nr. 655/2014 über einen Europäischen Beschluss zur vorläufigen Kontenpfändung in Zivil- und Handelssachen entgegengewirkt werden. Der Verfasser vergleicht die vorübergehende Sicherung des Bankguthabens einschließlich damit zusammenhängender Fragen nach dieser Verordnung mit den einzelstaatlichen Maßnahmen nach der deutschen ZPO und dem polnischen KPC sowie deren Überlagerung durch das Unionsrecht. Anhand der erarbeiteten Unterschiede bewertet er die neue unionsrechtliche Maßnahme.

For decades, the focus of Metaphor Studies laid on Conceptual Metaphor and its role in the human conceptual system. This study, however, focuses on metaphor in communication. Its aim is to shed light on how commenters in online debates discuss EU-related topics via Scenario Negotiation, expressing and negotiating their points of view via Metaphorical Scenarios. The study offers a review of current metaphor theory and practical approaches and proposes an Integrated Model of Scenario Negotiation. The results are based on context-sensitive, qualitative analysis of data which stem from a corpus of online debates from the Guardian’s Comment is free section. The discussion illustrates the genre-specific conceptual-communicative functions of Scenario Negotiation in naturally occurring discourse.

This book tries to answer the question how the identity and cultural values of individuals are being modified by the Internet and its global culture. It is based on unique research projects focusing on foreign students and their way of communicating in the new media. The aim is to explore the relationship between the cultural affiliation of young Internet users from Poland, Germany and Ukraine and their attitudes as well as communication behaviour in Internet interactions. The author presents an in-depth analysis of network communication and its influence on possible changes of cultural identity. Creating an alternative platform for discussions, network communication becomes a place for a new type of identification – a cosmopolitan one. It is also the frame in which selfreflection and modification of cultural identity take place. According to the author, the social media thus might also be perceived as a tool for building tolerance with respect to the cultural differentiation of the world. Grażyna Piechota is a lawyer and sociologist. She works as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication of the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University. She specializes in civil society, political communication and networked communication.

This book concerns the ways in which many different types of nationalism, chauvinism and racism penetrated into musical thought in the interwar period, and how the leading artistic personalities of that period reacted to these ideologies. The concept of “nationalism” is understood broadly in this book and covers the entire spectrum of its positive and negative aspects. The topics listed in the book’s title have been discussed on the example of selected four countries, significant with respect to population and territory and representing different social-political systems: Germany (mostly after 1933), Italy, Poland (after 1926) and Great Britain. This anthology brings together texts of significance for the conceptualisation of human dignity as a constitutional principle in Europe from the earliest evidence until 1965. As far as human dignity is a constitutional principle, its history follows closely that of the constitution of states. However, various traditions of human dignity, understanding it to rely on features unrelated to the state, combine in the background to reflect the substance of the idea. The introductions to texts, chapters and parts narrates this history in relation to the texts presented to reflect it. The aim is to provide for scholars and students of law, philosophy, political science and theology a collection of texts documenting the history of the concept of human dignity that is sufficiently comprehensive to contextualise the various understandings of it. In the context of European integration, cross-border cooperation has become increasingly important. Following both the quantitative and qualitative expansion of this policy-field, it has repeatedly been the subject of scientific analysis in the past. This publication aims at the foundation of a trans-disciplinary research approach in the field of European cross-border cooperation. It takes the multi-dimensional reality of practical territorial cooperation in Europe as a starting point and develops a transdisciplinary scientific approach. Based on a common analytic frame of reference, practical patterns of cross-border policy-making in different European border regions are analyzed from the integrated theoretical perspectives of various scientific disciplines: Political Science, Geography, Sociology, History, Law, Cultural Sciences and SocioLinguistics, Economics and Administrative Science. The scientific conceptualizations are expanded by reports from practitioners coming from different institutional and functional levels of European crossborder policy-making.

While anti-European forces are still raging, pro-Europeans seem impotent and deprived of a strong, clear and convincing alternative. This book is an attempt to fill that void: reacting to the anti-European wave, it also outlines a strong criticism both of the current EU and of its advocates. Far from the Europeanist defence of the status quo, it proposes an original and radical project of European sovereignty. Its message is both critical and propositional. This book is therefore original in its method, approach and content. It distinguishes itself from most of the literature on the subject by going beyond the narrow cleavage opposing mainstream anti- and pro- Europeans. In this general polemic, antiEuropean arguments usually promote a return to sovereignty at the national level, while pro-Europeans justify the existing EU configuration and its so-called “sharing” or “division” of sovereignty. Despite being clearly in favour of a deeper European integration in some fields, Sophie Heine refuses to throw away the classical concept of sovereign power. Relying on a rich literature and deploying a theoretical and strategic argument, she proposes to rehabilitate this notion at a supra-national level while avoiding the common traps of national sovereignty. This allows her to propose a redefinition of European federalism connected to her broader liberal approach.

Even though the democratic decline has been deemed a global phenomenon, the question of how it manifests itself in the postcommunist world and how it varies across different regions with divergent levels of democratic consolidation has not been sufficiently addressed yet. In the first part of the book an analysis is developed regarding the fiscal structure of the Monetary Union, starting by the Maastricht constraints and going through the Stability and Growth Pact to the Fiscal Compact. The main idea is that a new structure of the European budget should be promoted, with an increased size and new own resources, overcoming the limits of the current structure either on the revenue side or on the expenditure one. The main role of a renewed budget will be to provide the European public goods that are necessary to guarantee internal and external security, protection of the environment, technological innovations and all the measures that are needed to support growth and competitiveness of European production. A Stabilisation Fund should be put in place, so that the Eurozone could be able to face with adequate means a new general or asymmetric shock. The second part is devoted to the problem of providing new own resources to the European budget. After a brief overview of the current system and its limits, the main proposal is to introduce a carbon tax that will complement the existing Emission Trading System. The new tax should be levied on the emissions of carbon dioxide generated by the use of fossil fuel, with a rate proportional to the carbon content of the fuel. This tax is a way of “getting prices right”, putting a price on negative externalities produced by the combustion of fuels, which generate CO2 emissions. This proposal is politically acceptable only if the new tax will not worsen the external competitiveness of European production. This result could be achieved if a similar levy is put on the border on imports of “like” goods coming from countries where a price is not put on the use of carbon dioxide emissions through a system of border tax adjustments, compatible with WTO rules. Alberto Majocchi is Emeritus Professor of Public Finance in the University of Pavia. He has been teaching in the University of Venezia-Ca’ Foscari, Varese and Castellanza and in the University of Leuven. During the years 1991-93 he has been working as a National Expert in the Environment Directorate of the European Commission in Brussels. He is now Vice-President of the Centre for Studies on Federalism (Turin) and President of Fondazione Magni for Ayamé (Ivory Coast).

À partir de la consultation extensive d’archives inédites et de l’observation du travail mené au sein de groupes patronaux, ce livre éclaire les mobilisations pour faire exister une voix unifiée du patronat français. Il analyse la lutte entre différentes formes de légitimité pour faire et dire l’Europe, aussi bien au sein du siège parisien de MEDEF qu’à l’échelle européenne. L’étude des relations internationales, tout particulièrement dans le champ historique, est issue d’une histoire diplomatique largement rénovée à travers la prise en compte des forces profondes telles que les a jadis définies Pierre Renouvin. Elle place les États et ceux qui sont chargés de définir et de mettre en œuvre leur politique au cœur de la vie internationale. Selon cette conception, les États conduisent leur action en jouant sur la palette des moyens les plus divers sur lesquels ils peuvent s’appuyer, tels que l’économie ou la culture, et qui agissent ou interagissent les uns par rapport aux autres. La démultiplication des champs d’analyse de la vie internationale se développe ainsi tout au long du XXe siècle, mais est l’objet d’un nouveau regard en ces temps de mondialisation. Cette dernière, contemporaine du développement des analyses néo-libérales depuis les années 1980, témoigne tout à la fois de la prise de conscience de la démultiplication des acteurs en présence – ONG, entreprises multinationales par exemple – et de la large autonomie d’action de ces multiples acteurs. La collection Enjeux internationaux se veut représentative de ces perspectives renouvelées et de leur impact sur les recherches actuelles. Sans abandonner l’étude des relations internationales centrées sur les États, elle cherche à mieux appréhender la diversité des segments qui composent le champ international et le mode de relations entre ces derniers : de l’enjeu que constitue le sport à celui de l’usage de la mémoire coloniale. Elle s’adresse ainsi aux universitaires et analystes souhaitant interroger les grandes thématiques du siècle dernier au service d’une réflexion sur le présent.

Diese Buchreihe konzentriert sich auf Themen aus dem Bereich Geschichte und internationale Beziehungen, ist jedoch auch offen für Nachbardisziplinen mit historischem Ansatz. For several decades now, our attention has been drawn to expanding agricultural output and the proliferation of powerful food companies. At the same time, in the process of European integration, the adoption of the Codex Alimentarius (1963), the Food Law (2002), and the recognition of PGIs for many products have contributed to the creation of a common European "food space". Today, these systems of supply and distribution have between them given Europeans quite varied dietary possibilities. This situation stems from various developments, linking the economic to the technical and amounting to a long-term trend. Cultural issues bear upon this, whether culinary transmission from generation to generation or the increasingly diverse catering sector, and political decisions also contribute through the establishment of standards and regulations. Hence, traditions and ruptures, innovations and continuities are permanently unsettling the European diet. Using original sources, doctoral theses, conference papers, monographs and testimonies, this series examines historical developments at the national scale and also, more generally, in a transnational perspective. The series hopes to make a significant contribution to understanding the processes of food innovation, which are powerful factors of difference and identity in contemporary Europe.

European integration is a profound phenomenon influencing our current understanding of political and social processes in Europe and beyond. The set of European institutions that have now functioned in the continent for over half a century have created new broadened frames of reference for a variety of social actors. The most comprehensive is the European Union, which can be characterised as a multilevel polity. The other organisations, such as the Council of Europe and OSCE, also contribute significantly to the new mode of relations in Europe. This has in turn influenced how social and political actors act and define their roles. European integration has changed the functioning of states, their sovereignty and the meaning and status of borders, as well as the nature of citizenship. It has also allowed social actors to be engaged in the increasingly transnationalised public sphere and therefore changed the analysis of the concept of civil society. In addition, it profoundly impacts the life of individuals, permitting spatial and social mobility along with reconstruction of collective identity and memory. This series welcomes book proposals that look at the political and social aspects of human activities in the broadest terms but analysed from the perspective of how these processes are transformed as a result of European integration.
