Are Commercial
Dog Foods Healthy? By Tricia Deed
Radu Bercan / Shutterstock.com
D
o we purchase commercial dog foods or prepare our dog food for our pets? It has become a problem serving healthy foods which will benefit our pets. Today you can make a choice. To feed your dog commercial dog foods as their foundation meal will cut their lives short with weak immune systems, disease or death from failed organs. We want our pets to be healthy. Do you agree or disagree? Our dogs give us unconditional love, devotion, and loyalty. Our pets, like us, need to stay healthy in order to ward off negative effects of bad food, preservatives, and chemicals. There are warnings on every product which we have in and around our homes and gardens as well as our foods.
6
We are hearing on our news reports how our children are eating too much junk food and getting diseases at an earlier age; diseases which we associate during adult years. As a nation we are concerned because of the financial burden on our health system and insurance costs. Diabetes, heart, and circulation diseases are long term and are easily prevented or corrected by eating healthy wholesome foods. Our pets are no different. Read the labels on packages, canned, frozen, and dehydrated foods. As a general rule the first item listed on the container is the largest food quantity to be found in the product. Each ingredient thereafter are found in smaller amounts.
Example: •
Beef
•
Corn
•
Barley
•
Rice
The Pet Lovers Guide | www.thepetloversguide.com
Beef Corn
This product has more beef than corn, more corn than barley and more barley than rice. After reading the label carefully you need to decide if this container of commercial dog food is healthy for your pet.
Then consider: •
Who is the food manufacturer?
•
Are you able to trust the brand name?
•
Is it real beef?
•
Is your dog allergic to any of the grains listed?
•
Is the price an indicator as to the amount or quality of the beef?
•
Are the vitamins and minerals of good quality?
•
Is the oil content correct?
•
How fresh is this product?
Are you aware most dry commercial foods have a shelf life of twelve to eighteen months? Oils turn rancid in weeks. Fresh foods spoil much quicker. Sometimes your pet can let you know by not eating its food because of taste or something else. My dog is allergic to rice bran. Brown rice may be excellent, but his allergy remains. You need to be alert and become a detective to analyze if a food ingredient, chemical or preservative is not tolerated by your pet. Remember melamine, the wheat gluten, which originated from China and poisoned many of our pets through dog food? Thousands of pets had died. It is because of this poisoning that many of us have turned to preparing natural homemade dog foods. Our pet is our child. We love our pets and how dare companies which make commercial foods be careless and not caring just to make a buck; had to express a bit of anger. Fortunately, there are some commercial dog food manufacturers which are improving their ingredients and product quality. We also need to admit we like the convenience of purchasing ready made dog food and we like the price. Unfortunately, when your dog gets sick from poor nutrition it gets costly. We too are guilty. We need to know what makes a well-balanced meal for our pet. We need to educate ourselves on healthy and safe foods for our pets. Are commercial dog foods healthy? For alternative healthy food information, visit the pet section at http://www.Infotrish.com and review Dog Food Secrets.

Diabetes in Cats Feline Diabetes Symptoms, Diet, Treatment By Ryan Mutt
D
iabetes mellitus, sugar diabetes is a complex and common disease. The feline diabetes is affecting the cats in an alarming rate. The feline diabetes mellitus is incapable to produce insulin
towards balancing blood sugar or glucose levels. If it is not treated timely, it leads to weight loss, loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, severe depression, and functional complications, and it leads to
coma and death. The disease affects one in four hundred cats. Symptoms are similar to humans. The disease occurrence rate of cats is less than dogs.
The symptoms of feline diabetes are:

The diets of feline diabetes:
The treatment of feline diabetes:
The diet of feline diabetes can be based on two assumptions. It is a high protein along with low carbohydrate diet, or it can be a diet of high carbohydrate, low fat with high fiber.
Eighty to ninety five Feline diabetes affected cats are similar to type 2 diabetes. Symptoms are diagnosed. Studies reveal these cats are severely insulin dependent. The prompt effective treatment can perhaps cure cats of type 2 diabetes.
These both diets are designed to lower weight, and to control blood sugar levels. The responsiveness of each cat is to be different based on application of diet plan. Protein and fats replace the low-carb diet. If the cats suffer from kidney, liver or bowel diseases, the higher-protein diet would not be suitable. Considering the health condition of cats, you choose the diet. The canned foods for cat, Purina DM can be in this category. It can be high-carb, high-fiber. The added soluble fiber, psyllium reduces the intensification of conversion rates for starch to glucose, and it helps the glucose levels control. Not for gaining weight, it is for the loosing weight. The foods in these categories are Hill's W/D, Hills R/D and Purina OM. Determine the best diet. You monitor the signs of high blood sugar, excessive thirst or urination, and check ketones with strips.
However, it increases the weakness of the legs, malnutrition, ketoacidosis, dehydration and death of the cats. The treatment contains insulin injections once or twice daily, diet and oral medication. Initially, the veterinarian is to check and recheck the symptoms, signs and prepare the treatment schedule. The veterinarian is to select the dose of insulin. Excessive insulin can cause the death of cats.
To sum up , the basic remedies in this instance can be 1. Insulin therapy 2. Oral medication in place of insulin 3. Test of blood and urine tests 4. Physical examinations 5. Behavioral signals establishing insulin therapy

Holistic
Aromatherapy for Cats By Francoise Rapp
Most any cat owner will tell you their feline friends are capable of conveying emotion. In fact, they may even say they can recognize and distinguish specific emotions their cats display, including love, anger, illness, annoyance and more.
Scientific experiments on both humans and animals indicate that emotional responses are triggered by physical stimuli. Considering that cats have sensory systems that are much more sensitive than the human senses of sight, smell, sound, taste and touch, there's no question that our pets' environments are so closely linked to their states of mind. Unlike humans, cats do not have the conscious ability to integrate, process and grow from their emotional experiences. Instead, cats will react, take in and indicate their emotions, but are not able to process their imbalances like we can. This explains why a healthy emotional environment is vital for cats, as well as for all animals. A healthy cat must be afforded enough space, love, and attention if he is to thrive. But foremost, and frequently overlooked, is a peaceful home environment. Cats are extremely sensitive to stress, and living in a home with arguments, negative energies or tension will affect his emotional well-being and health.
Today I will share aromatherapy recipes to treat common emotional issues your cat may be facing, including stress, loneliness, grief and separation anxiety/abandonment.
***IMPORTANT!*** Animals respond very well to flower essences and essential oils. They are very gentle and safe methods of treating emotional imbalances or stressrelated symptoms. But please remember that animals are very sensitive and only require a minute dosage of essential oils. Avoid any sensitive areas, such as the head, eyes, ears and mouth. Pour a few drops of these aromatic blends into the palm of your hands and very gently pat your cat along the spine.

our understanding and expert guidance in order to gain to their ''inner cupcake''! It has been such an honor to be entrusted with the care and training of so many wonderful dogs over the years. I am currently working with the North Bay’s very own Mondo who I have been fostering and training for several months. Mondo is thriving here at Calm K9 and is well on his way to achieving his CGC certificate! He is the class clown, has many canine friends here to play with and has taken root in all of our hearts! Calm K9 was voted the Bay Area’s “Best Private Trainer” for 2015 and we have been nominated again for 2016! Our small rural training facility offers many opportunities to help dogs of all sizes and breeds achieve balance and the ability to enjoy life fully with their newly confident and canine savvy people. That’s right – I work extensively with dog owners / guardians too, and we always have a lot of fun during our sessions! W
hen people ask me, as they often do, why I chose to become a dog trainer, my mind travels back to the year 2007 and a lovely fall afternoon in Northern California….. Driving along Highway 12, headed for the Sierras, I was horrified to see a small dog on the highway doing it’s best to dodge oncoming traffic from both directions. I immediately pulled off of the road in hopes of helping this frightened little guy, but as soon as he saw me emerge from my vehicle, he ran off into a large field. As quickly as possible I made my way into the field using my best “recall voice”, praying for the opportunity to help this poor little pup in any way possible. Not surprisingly, the little dog never reappeared, and I sat in that field crying my eyes out. I desperately wanted to save this poor soul, and my heart ached when I thought of what his immediate future might hold. As I wiped my tears away, I realized that something had to change - I would no longer be that girl with good intentions and a big heart but no game plan. I wanted to work hands on with stray dogs, rescues, shelter dogs, fosters and adopted dogs. I decided right then and there, sitting in that field, I would become a dog trainer specializing in dogs with significant behavioral issues – aggression, distrust of people, crippling shyness or wariness, separation anxiety, and so on. Once established, I would be able to offer training for dogs whose lives literally depended upon overcoming unwanted behaviors. And that’s exactly what I did! My name is Susan Raymond and I am the owner of Calm K9 Dog Training and Behavior Solutions in Port Costa, CA. The Calm K9 style of dog training is based upon mutual trust, respect, compassion, patience and clarity. We regard each and every dog we work with as a unique individual who needs The Pet Lovers Guide | SPRING 2016

he Animal Clinic of Benicia, pride themselves in being able to provide the very best care available, not just to those who can afford it, but to folks who may be a little less fortunate as well. Right from their inception, Dr. Laurie Aleixo started, what she called, “The Angel Fund A small, non intrusive, little box on the front desk counter, that allows people to donate to this wonderful cause that has helped countless animals over the years. Their most recent, came in the form of a beautiful little soul, originally named Adam. A sweet male pitbull, born on December 25th, that was confiscated from a bad home, by a rescue group, where he swallowed an object that caused a blockage and pierced his intestinal wall. He was emaciated, scared and in pain. The surgical repair was going to cost $4000.00 and if the funds were not found he would have to be euthanized. Dr. Laurie caught wind of this case and jumped into action. The animal had less than one night to live, and time was of the essence. She told the rescue agency to bring the one year old pup over, and she would do the surgery at no cost. She and her caring staff performed the emergency

surgery and saved his life. Within a weeks time he had gained 15 pounds, regaining his strength and will to live.
Empathy. Passion. Respect. Expertise
A family member saw the story on social media and fell in love. Dr. Laurie’s husband rented a car and drove him, 2300 miles, one way, to his new, loving, forever home where he, now named, “Maxus”, was well received by his now, older brother, “Cash”. A fitting name to a dog, who, at this very moment, is teaching Maxus what it is like to be loved, safe and warm.
Animal Clinic of Benicia
Without cash, sometimes animals in desperate need, will not receive the care or love they deserve and die. The Animal Clinic of Benicia never wanted the lack of funds, cash, to be an issue, thus the Angel Fund was born. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Laurie and her amazing staff, have been able to save, countless animals because others donated. Often times Dr. Laurie would simply perform needed services at no cost simply to do what she, and her staff do best. Save the lives of animals who just want to live another day, to love others in return. After hearing the story, many people came in to donate to help other animals who may be in a similar situation. Since then, the Animal Clinic of Benicia has continued to donate money from this service to help those that need it most. We are hoping to further this fund to help those rescue groups for situations like these. Animal Clinic of Benicia: 402 Military E Street, Benicia, CA 94510 • 707-745-5993

Instructions: 1. Measure out a half cup of mashed sweet potato. If you are using fresh, this is usually about 1 small or 1/2 large potato. Canned is less nutrient dense, but also an option if you are in a hurry. 2. In a medium-sized bowl or food processor combine mashed sweet potato, eggs, apple sauce, melted oil and honey. Sift coconut flour and add to batter slowly, stirring until mostly smooth. 3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread mixture onto parchment paper in a layer approximately 1/4 inch thick and sprinkle the top with sea salt. 4. Place in oven at 350°F and bake for about 20 minutes. Remove pan and score treats into small “bite-sized” squares. Place back in oven and bake for another 15 minutes or until outer edges begin to brown. Allow to cool on the pan for 5-10 minutes before transferring to a container. 5. Expect lots of cute begging faces from your dog (as evidenced below). Try not to forget that that treats are all about moderation however, no matter how healthy they may be. Give your dog one or two, and keep a jar in the refrigerator for long-term storage.
Ingredients: › 1/2 cup sweet potato, mashed (approx. 1 small or 1/2 large) › 2 eggs › 3 Tbsp. unsweetened apple sauce › 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted › 1 tsp. raw honey (optional) › 6 Tbsp. coconut flour, sifted › pinch unrefined salt
Nothing fake, nothing processed; just all-organic goodness: › Sweet potatoes supply a healthy dose of dietary fiber with vitamins B6, C, beta carotene and manganese › Cold pressed coconut oil delivers heart healthy lauric acid and has antibacterial and antiviral properties › Organic coconut flour provides beneficial starches and promotes organism balance in the gut › Raw honey is rich with antioxidants, enzymes and flavonoids › Sea salt offers a collection of important trace minerals
