Sri Lanka’s national flag is bold and colourful, with a lion holding a sword, and a fig leaf in each corner. The lion represents bravery and the four leaves represent the four Buddhist virtues of kindness, compassion, joy and a clear and happy mind.

Long ago, Sri Lanka’s capit al was Anuradhapura and thousa nds of Buddhist monks lived there . The royal family built many wonderfu l stupas (dome-shaped buildings wi th sacred relics inside). Family
Sri Lanka is a nation of early risers and most people rise at 4am to do their chores before the day gets too hot. It’s traditional for mothers to do all the cooking in the morning, making several dishes to eat later. Dharsana told me that it’s also normal for many generations to live together. His family lives in part of his grandparents’ home. He shares a bed with his brothers. Everyone is home by mid-aftern oon and it’s time for the ‘daily bath’ – a cold shower in the hot test part of the day!
Hobbies
Dharsana told me th at Sri Lankan childre n enjoy getting outdoo rs. In a park we saw a group of younger ch ildren holding hand s in a circle. “They’re playing eluwan kem a,” explained Dharsana. “It means ‘eating th e goat’. The child insi de the circle is the go at and the one outsid e is the tiger. He ha s to break through the ci rcle and if he fails, th ey tell him to eat goat dung!” I also learnt th at the two favourite sp orts here are volleyb all and cricket – the Sr i Lankan cricket team is world famous! Many schools here also ha ve stamp-collecting cl ubs. It inspired me to collect some stamps of my own from my travels! See some I made for you in Fun with Friends.

Sri Lanka is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of tea! It’s grown in the hills, where tea plantations stretch for miles. Tea leaves and buds are picked by hand and each picker harvests about 15kg (33lb) of tea per day. That’s enough to make 5,000 cups of tea! Sri Lanka has two monsoons a year, when it gets very wet and windy. The southwest gets soaked from April to June, and the northeast monsoon happens from October to January. In heavy rain, everything stops in Sri Lanka – even school!

PETRA’S
ADVENTURES

hansara shared some funny st ories with me on my travels, all featuring a character calle d Andare – a court jester who is the star of many Sri Lankan folk tales. Here’s how it went …

CURIOUS
One day, the city of Kandy in the middle of Sri Lanka was visited CLUBHOUSE by a great, hulking giant, who wore a dreadful scowl on his face. He stood in the middle of the square, thumped his chest and bellowed:
“I challenge your strongest and bravest citizen to a fight!” But the people of Kandy were terrified and, even the boldest soldiers cowered when they saw the immense size of the giant. Nobody was courageous enough to volunteer to fight.
ance to A-ha! A ch to the king lf e s y m e v pro n! and his me
News of the fearsome giant soon reached the king, and when he heard how frightened his people were, he quickly summoned an emergency meeting with his ministers. But everyone was so afraid of the giant they couldn’t come up with a solution. Andare, the court jester, overheard the problem and interrupted...
9
“Your majesty, I will take on the giant,” he said. The king and the ministers fell quiet and then burst out laughing. Andare was known for many things – his slapstick humour, his quick wit and his sharp mind, but strength wasn’t one of them.
“I’m serious!” said Andare, and everybody stopped laughing. “Very well,” said the king. “If you can rid my kingdom of this giant, Andare, I promise I will reward you handsomely.”
“Thank you, your majesty, but may I ask for your help?” asked Andare. “Before I battle the giant, I’d like some time to build up my strength. Can you place me and the giant in adjoining rooms and feed us the very best fare for a week? At the end of that time, I will fight the giant and I will beat him.” It was an odd request, but the king agreed to it and he sent a messenger out to the giant, who made his way to the palace, shaking the earth with each step he took. The only room large enough to accommodate such a huge beast was in the dungeon, so Andare made himself comfortable in the cell next door to the giant. That night, they were both sent a fine feast from the kitchens and Andare set to work on his plan. He took a knife from his plate and began to quietly scrape away the plaster from around the bricks in the wall between them. To cover the noise, he chatted to the giant and the two became quite friendly. As the week went on, he scraped away more and more plaster and got to know the giant better.
10
Finally, during their last meal before the fight, Andare called out to his neighbour, “Friend, do you have any sauce you can spare please?
My rice is quite dry tonight.”
“I do, but how can I give it to you when we are separated by this thick wall?” replied the giant.
“No problem at all!” said Andare. “I’ll punch through the wall with my fist and you can pass the sauce through the hole to me.” “That’s impossible!” said the giant, looking at the thick, stone wall. “Nobody could do that!” “Of course it isn’t impossible,” smiled Andare. “I’ll do it now!” And, with that,
he pushed on the bricks he had worked so hard to loosen and they fell into the giant’s cell, crashing down on the floor around him. Through the hole, the giant looked at Andare in disbelief, then he pressed against the wall to check it was truly made from stone. He even tried to punch it with his own fist, but all he got was very sore, very bruised knuckles.
“May I have that sauce now please?” asked Andare, chuckling to himself. As the giant passed it through the hole to him, Andare saw that his mighty hands were trembling violently. That night, the giant barely slept a wink, worrying about Andare’s hidden strength.
“How could such a little man give such a powerful blow?” thought the giant. “With strength like that, he could easily crush me!”
Andare was quite a Dharsana told me that as likely to play a joke trickster and was just a giant. In Sri Lanka, on the king, as he was meone who is joking so e as te to on mm co it’s ‘Andare’! around by calling them
By morning, when the guards came to release the duo for their fight, the giant had worked himself up into such a state of fear and anxiety that when his cell door was opened, he ran out, dashed through the palace, thundered through the streets of Kandy and disappeared into the jungle. He was never to be seen again. Andare couldn’t help but grin. When the king heard that the giant had fled, he and all his ministers were truly amazed. Knowing Andare well, the king guessed that he must have played a clever trick on the giant, but all that he cared about was that his kingdom was rid of an enormous nuisance and it was safe again. Andare, the clever court jester, was applauded and praised by everyone – and he was showered with gifts by the king for many months afterwards.

KANDY COLOURED! This August, the Sri Lankan city of Kandy will explode with colour, light, music and the sweet scent of incense thanks to the annual Esala Perahera procession, which sees a sacred relic – the tooth of Lord Buddha – paraded through the streets in a casket on the back of a magnificent tusked elephant. Joining the pageant will be elephants decorated in bright silks and fairy lights, dancers, drummers, fire-breathing acrobats, jugglers and men cracking whips. It’s a magnificent spectacle and one of the biggest Buddhist celebrations in the world!
ELE ESCAPE!
FACT!
The Temple of the Tooth is one of the most important places of wors hip in Sri Lanka. People believe that when Lord Bu ddha died, his tooth was smuggled into Sri Lanka in the hair of a princess!
IN SRI LANKA
In Hambantota in the south of Sri Lanka, local workers had to drop everything and dash to the rescue of a baby elephant, which became separated from its mother when it fell down an uncovered drain. The calf was trapped there while a team of people struggled to widen the opening. They heaved out poor little ele using ropes and took it straight for treatment.

! S E O R E H S ’ A R T PE This month, Petra has been hugely inspired by Australian 12-year-old Campbell Remess who, using his own pocket money, taught himself to sew teddy bears to give as Christmas gifts to children in the local hospital. What began as a random act of kindness a few years ago has turned into a charitable hobby and Campbell sews at least one new ted every day. He sends them all over the world to wherever he thinks people are in need of cheering up, and he also auctions his cute creations to raise funds for good causes. So far this year, he’s raised over 2,600 Australian dollars. Ask an adult to look up Campbell’s Facebook page, so you can support him and follow his progress.

CITIES UNDER THE SEA Underwater archaeologists recently uncovered the watery ruins of two ancient cities in Aboukir Bay in the Egyptian Nile Delta. Canopus and Thonis-Heracleion were claimed by the sea over a thousand years ago. Among the deepsea treasures, divers found statues of gods, bones and carved tablets. Next stop… Atlantis! See it at the British Museum’s Sunken Cities exhibition.

ShihTzus Elvis and Bella, the proud parents of two litters of cute puppies, celebrated their big day with bone-shaped treats and a three-tiered cake made from their favourite dog food! Elvis wore a blue bow tie and Bella looked the part in a white wedding dress! Their owner invited all their doggy and human friends and they even had six of their pups as bridesmaids! SEETHA... THE SRI LANKAN ELEPHANT Hello, dear one! My name is Seetha and I’m the oldest female in a herd of about 15 other elephants in the Udawalawe national park. We girls like to stick together, so we’re all female apart from a few male calves. As the oldest in the herd, it’s up to me to remember all the best spots for eating, drinking and getting some shade. It’s also my job to teach the youngest how to behave. I help out all the elephant mothers and care for their calves. I feel very lucky to live in the wild – my sister was taken away to help humans with logging when she was young. My favourite time of day is when we bathe in the cool waters. I love to see the calves splashing about. Everyone gets very wet! Sometimes humans come by in safari jeeps to watch us. They don’t come too near, so we don’t mind, but I know how to scare them off if they do come close… my trunk doubles as a trumpet!

Amazing Elephant Orphanage
Sri Lankan elephants are the largest of the Asian Elephants and they’re easy to spot as they have patchy yellowish-pink blotches on their heads, ears and bellies, where the skin has no pigment. Only 2% of Sri Lankan elephants have tusks. ‘Tuskers’, as they’re called, are considered to be special and are used in religious parades and often kept by temples. Sri Lankan elephants are herbivores and eat over 100 types of grasses, herbs and shrubs, but they also love bananas.
ELE FACTS! 1
Asian elephants in India spend up to 19 hours a day eating and produce up to 220 pounds of dung per day – that’s a lot of poop!
Sadly, Sri Lankan elephants are endangered, mainly due to loss of habitat, but conservationists are working hard to tackle the problem and elephants are protected in several national parks in Sri Lanka. In one of the parks, the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home looks after both injured and orphaned baby elephants, until they are old enough and strong enough to be released back into the wild. The baby elephants gulp down up to 40 pints of milk a day and, before they return to the jungle, are bathed in diluted dung to remove any human scents!

C RAZY KOTTA PORA
A popular game in Sri Lanka is Kotta Pora – a fun take on a pillow fight! Professor Wins ton and Teo love playing this!
1.
Mark out a square space to play in with a clear boundary (use string to mark it.) Serious Sri Lankan players play this game sitting on a wooden beam over water!
2.
Each player grabs a pillow and holds it with one hand. Put the other hand behind your back and stand on one foot.
3.
Now players try to topple their opponent with their pillows. If you put your foot down, fall over or step outside the square, the other person wins! (Be gentle, nobody should get hurt!)

Disney’s remake of Pete’s Dragon is sure to be a summer blockbuster – they haven’t just retold the original story, they’ve completely revamped it and Pete’s best friend, Elliot – who just happens to be a dragon – is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Plus the film is in 3D! It’s going to be big! Who wouldn’t want a dragon for a pet?

The Sri Lankan downloads chart might be dominated by western music, but there’s also a strong tradition of homegrown acts, singing in Sinhalese or Tamil. One of the most interesting bands is Voice.Print, which started out as a traditional choir singing in English and even won an international choir contest. When they decided to start singing in Sinhalese, they became overnight pop sensations, and can do everything from harmonious vocals to awesome beatboxing! Another great band is Doctor – the masters of catchy pop tunes. Visit doctorband.lk to hear more!
Lego fans (that’s everyone, right?) will be super-excited to hear that the fantastic Lego Dimensions world is about to get a whole lot bigger and whole lot more adventurous, with 16 new packs coming your way from September, including story packs.
