PETRA’S

ADVENTURES

hen I went to the bea ch with Matias, he in troduced me to his friends, A na Luiza and Felipe. Felipe offered us all a banana. “You ’re such a monkey!” laughed Matias. “We have a story he re about how bana nas belong to monkeys. I’ll tell you… ”

PETRA’S

STAY

Long ago, there was an artist who came to live at the edge of the forest. She fenced off a big area,CLUBHOUSE which was filled with banana trees, and made it her garden. As the artist got older, it became harder for her to gather the bananas by herself, so she made a deal with the largest monkey.

“You gather my bananas for me, monkey, and I’ll give you half of my harvest to share with your friends,” she said.

CURIOUS

Now I know where the phrase ‘cheeky monkey’ comes from!

The monkey agreed, but he was greedy and he wanted all the bananas to himself. When it was time to harvest the bananas, he took all the nice big fruit from the top of each bunch and left the artist with the small wrinkled ones at the bottom – the ones that wouldn’t ripen nicely. She was furious! The artist lay awake all night trying to work out how she could teach the greedy monkey a lesson. At last, she had an idea! The next day, she took out her sculpting tools and lots of wax, and she moulded and formed a perfect statue of a little boy. On top of the boy’s head, she put a basket filled with the biggest, ripest bananas she could find. It looked just like one of the little boys who sold bananas at the local market!

In fact, it looked just like one of the little boys the greedy monkey liked to steal bananas from! She placed the wax statue in her garden and waited. It wasn’t long before the greedy monkey spotted it. He was in a particularly fine mood that morning, as the sun was shining brightly, so he swung over to the statue and said,

“Good morning, little boy! Those bananas look delicious. Could you spare one for me please?” The little boy said nothing, so the monkey said, even louder, “Just one ripe little, sweet little banana please? It’s

all I ask, little boy!”

Again, the little boy ignored him. The monkey started to feel quite annoyed.

“How rude!” he said. “Do you want me to upset your basket and steal a banana?” The little boy remained silent. The monkey was outraged and he ran towards the boy, stretching out his hand to push him over and steal a banana from the basket. However, when he reached the boy, his hand sank into the warm wax and it got stuck there!

“Little boy, let go of my hand this instant or I’ll push you with my other hand!” The little boy still didn’t say a word. Deeply angered by now, the monkey pushed the boy with his other hand, which also got stuck inside the wax sculpture.

“Little boy, let go of my hands this instant or I’ll kick with you my foot!” Of course, the little boy did nothing and the monkey kicked out, only to find that his foot was now stuck fast too.

“Little boy, let go of my foot this instant or I’ll kick with you my other foot!”

10

The little boy didn’t speak or move, and the monkey’s second foot was soon deeply embedded inside the sculpture.

“Little boy, let go of my body this instant or I’ll summon all the other monkeys!” The little boy didn’t let go, so the monkey called as loudly as he knew how and, soon, monkeys came swinging from every direction to help him. There was every kind of monkey – big, medium and small. When they saw him trapped inside the waxy sculpture of the little boy, they all gathered around to pull him out, but it was no use. He was completely stuck. Finally, a tiny pygmy marmoset came up with a plan.

“All you big monkeys climb to the top of the tallest tree in the garden and make a pyramid, with the howler monkey at the top. Howler, when you get there, shout as loud as you can and ask the sun to help us!” The monkeys did as they were told and the howler monkey howled with all his might to make the sun hear him – and it worked! The sun glided across the sky and let its hottest rays beat down on the artist’s sculpture.

Answer: 21 bananas

Very soon, the wax began to melt, and the greedy monkey was able to pull one hand free… a second hand free… and then both of his feet free!

Joao nursed him back to health and returned him to the sea. Imagine his surprise, when he came home to find the penguin in his garden! This was five years ago. Have you tried cup stacking? The aim of the game is to stack plastic cups in pyramids as fast as you can and it needs excellent hand-eye coordination. In this year’s world championships, 11-year-old Malaysian Chan Keng Ian got the gold for boys and 13-year-old Korean Eun Jin Jo did it for the girls. WEIRD WORLD! Thought Finding Nemo was fiction? Think again! Inky the octopus made a daring escape from the National Aquarium in New Zealand, where he was a star attraction. They think he squeezed through a small opening in the lid of his tank, slid down the side, slinked across the floor and slithered down a 50-metre long drainpipe, which led straight into the sea! Intrepid Inky was well known for being unusually curious and intelligent, and because the octopus has no bones, it can squeeze through holes as small as a coin! Unbelievable!

“I started the project because I wanted to find out more about the world,” says Toby, who’s now 8. Toby writes all his own letters and has received over 380 replies so far, including one from a South Pole scientist who told him to “Stay curious!” Just like Petra! “We’re so lucky to have this wonderful world,” Toby says. K L A T Y E MONK Did you know ’s good friend Max the chimpanzee capuchin monkeys Petra to four of his favourite can purr and whistle? introduces you primate cousins from Brazil. They’re musical monkeys!

Loud and Proud

High-Speed Squirrels The super squirrel monkey is common across the Amazon and these longlimbed lovelies hang out in noisy groups, scurrying at high speed through the tree canopy. You can spot them quite easily because of their black mouth and the white colouring around their eyes, which looks like a mask. The average squirrel monkey is just 25 to 35cm long!

The howler monkey, which can be found in rainforests across Brazil, got its name for a reason – males can belt out roaring howls that can be heard up to 4.8km (3 miles) away. It’s one of the loudest animals on land and is definitely the loudest monkey. But its bark is worse than its bite! Howler monkeys may be big, but they’re pretty calm and they eat fruit, leaves and nuts. Long ago, ancient Mayans even used to worship them!

FUN FACT!

Capuchin monkeys are so smart, they’re often trained to appear in films and on TV. Look out for them in Pirates of the Caribbean and Night at the Museum!

le g n u J e h t f o g n Ki Golden lion tamarins are an environmental success story. 40 years ago, they were near extinction. Today, in Rio’s Poço das Antas nature reserve, there are over 1,000 of these aweinspiring little monkeys with flaming orange ‘lion’s manes’. The people of Brazil love the golden lion tamarin so much, its picture is on the Brazilian banknote for 20 reais. The real (plural: reais) is Brazil’s national currency.

3

Teeny Tiny Titis! The fire-tailed titi was discovered in the Amazon just a few years ago. These funny little fellows, which weigh about 1.5kg, live as families and sit with their tails entwined while they dine on fruity feasts. They have ginger sideburns and tails, so it’s a wonder they weren’t spotted sooner! Titis are great at jumping and, in Germany, they are known as Springaffen – jumping monkeys!
