PROJECT EXPERIENCE As individuals continue to learn in new and innovative ways, educational facilities must continuously adapt to support the unique needs of students, staff, and communities. The current trend toward team-based, interdisciplinary learning, and “learning by doing” creates exciting opportunities to evolve the standard classroom design. PGAL has an outstanding track record of designing dynamic and flexible facilities that accommodate today’s rapid changes in education. As interactive technology continues to reshape the teaching and learning experience, our work supports these developments, while maintaining flexibility to facilitate whatever changes the future might bring. The following pages include a selection of the firm’s work.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY ADDISON MIZNER K-8 SCHOOL location: boca raton, florida The new 122,815-square-foot campus is located on the 11.5-acre site of the existing school and includes 57 classrooms (78 teacher stations): six kindergarten, two pre-k, 24 primary, 12 intermediate, 16 middle, and four self-contained and part-time ESE classrooms. The school includes: state-of-the-art media center, including reading room, support spaces, and maker space; science lab; art and music room; skills labs; full-service kitchen and cafeteria; and administrative offices and conference rooms. The exterior architecture represents a modern take on the influential design of Addison Cairns Mizner, the Palm Beach County architect who serves as the school’s

namesake. Smooth masonry walls with Spanish colonialinspired articulation compliment the character of the neighborhood and larger community. The inner campus has two courtyards: a large green space for student gardens, outdoor learning opportunities and flexible play; and a European-inspired plaza with an art patio, science area, and outdoor dining. The interiors are equipped with the latest in educational technology, children- and environmentally-friendly finishes and building systems, creating healthy and stimulating learning environments.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY DR. JOAQUIN GARCIA HIGH SCHOOL location: lake worth, florida Located on a 46-acre site in western Lake Worth, Florida, the high school campus - the first new high school in Palm Beach County in 20 years - currently has 1,600 students enrolled and is designed to accommodate the area’s rapid population growth. The 281,000-square-foot high school includes two buildings and a secure courtyard for students and staff. The three-story academic building houses administration, a media center, classrooms, and lab spaces. An adjacent single-story performing arts center features an 855-seat auditorium and spaces to support music, dance, and visual arts programs. The south end of the arts building is anchored by the kitchen/dining facility with a food court and outdoor covered dining.

An on-site athletic complex features a 4,000-seat lighted football stadium with “Carolina blue” artificial turf, a press box, and fieldhouse/concessions building. Other athletic facilities include a lighted baseball and softball field, two practice fields, tennis and basketball courts, and the only sand volleyball court at a high school in the county. A community entrance enables visitors to access the gymnasium, auditorium, and athletic fields without entering the main school facilities. The project was designed in collaboration with SchenkelShultz Architecture.

CHARTER SCHOOLS USA CORAL SPRINGS CHARTER MIDDLE + HIGH SCHOOL location: coral springs, florida PGAL designed the new 3,200-student middle school and high school, including a 90,000-square-foot middle school and 190,00-square-foot high school buildings. Both buildings are located adjacent to Mullins Park and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. The high school will share the use of the current theater and adjacent athletic fields and will include a new football stadium. These facilities will feature administration space, classrooms, and labs. The school is designed to be a demonstration school operated by Charter Schools, USA.

CITY OF AVENTURA DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL location: aventura, florida This iconic, 65,000-square-foot high school is the newest charter school for the City of Aventura. Sited on a tight, two-acre parcel located immediately adjacent to Waterways Park, the school was designed to minimize the footprint and maximize the use of the park amenities while providing internal and external safety and security for the students and staff. The school itself is four stories and provides vertical circulation through two highly efficient and well-detailed stairways. Designed to house 800 students at capacity (200 per grade), the school includes 28 classrooms, a music room, drama room, art room with kiln, Cambridge science and computer labs that are highlighted by stand-up desks and

digital white boards, plus a secure Administration wing and a centralized dining hall. Also included in the high school are flex-space break-out areas with flexible furniture design and challenge-based learning environments that encourage collaboration and impromptu teaching. Through extensive coordination with school and local police, numerous safety elements were integrated into the design, such as shot-spotter technology, bullet-proof entry vestibule, safe areas within classrooms and directresponse data connections.

NORTH BROWARD PREPARATORY SCHOOL GLOBAL WELLNESS CENTER location: coconut creek, florida The Global Wellness Center is a two-story, 46,000-square-foot building that provides athletic and fitness program space for the existing campus and student body. Elements of the building include a state-of-the-art basketball arena that seats approximately 900 with sky box viewing areas, two practice courts and one main court, seven locker rooms, a 3,000-square-foot weight room with trainer’s office, dance and yoga studio, ten large classrooms, administrative offices, and a full-service concession stand. The baseball and softball fields were relocated for ease of access to the new center.

The project also includes the redevelopment of 14.5 acres on the west side of the campus to allow for the separation of parent drop off and bus loop. For added security, a guard booth and barrier arms at both the north and south entrances were also added along with new fences along the west side of the campus.

CONTRARIA DEVELOPMENT ISTF PREPARATORY SCHOOL + INTERNATIONAL SPORTS TRAINING location: westlake, florida PGAL was selected as the Prime Architect for the prestigious International Sports Training Facility (ISTF) and Preparatory School. The project is located on 150 acres in northwestern Palm Beach County and will be built out in multiple phases. Major program elements of the facility include: 10,000seat Professional Soccer Stadium with four-story VIP Suites, Pressbox and Team areas; Lower and Upper Schools (K-12th grade) for 1,300-1,500 students with separate conference, theater and recreation centers; boarding capabilities for up to 500 students in a Residential Village with activity center and recreational pool; a pro-academy and boutique hotel for professional

players; a medical office complex with rehabilitation areas; multiple soccer and multi-purpose fields, tennis, golf and other sports training areas. The site has been designed to be pedestrian-friendly, with safety and security as high priorities.

WINDERMERE PREPARATORY SCHOOL CYPRESS CENTER FOR THE ARTS location: windermere, florida The crown jewel at the heart of the Windermere Campus is the Cypress Center for the Arts, a two-story, 33,000-square-foot visual and performing arts facility. The dynamic 500-seat theatre is both functional and flexible to allow for a variety of configurations and performances. The house consists of both fixed seating on a raked floor and telescopic theatre style seating for optimal sight lines. The room also has the option to be split into two with an operable divider wall. Overall, the school can accommodate intimate shows for 250, large performances for over 500, flat floor classroom/ meetings, and banquets with a variety of other configurations depending on the event and/or need.

A fully-functional control room, catwalk, and fly loft areas offer students and staff a true, hands-on and teaching and learning environment, allowing them to fully engage with all aspects of a theatre. Surrounding the house and stage, 12 teaching spaces consisting of 2D art, 3D art, band, choir, ensemble, theatre arts, and dance studios provide WPS with the high-quality teaching and acoustic environments. Staff offices, green rooms, a scenic shop and private practice rooms provide ancillary support for the facility. Additionally, covered outdoor space at the front entry allows WPS to expand their teaching environment and performances to the exterior within a large plaza that is at the center of campus.

CENTRAL CHARTER SCHOOL location: lauderhill, floriada Currently under construction, this new 91,756-squarefoot Pre-K-8 school will be located on the west side of the site of the existing school. The students and staff will remain in the four existing one-story buildings while the new facility is being designed and built. Phasing will be critical for the successful completion of the project. Phase I will require building temporary access roads to safely re-route circulation for bus and parent drop-off. Phase 2 will consist of installing the construction fence, construct the new three-story classroom and gym buildings, extend the parent loop road to bring stacking

on-site, and develop new parking, landscaping and retention areas during off-peak times. Phase 3 will open, commission and furnish the new facility; construct new covered walkways; demolish the two existing west buildings to make room for new recreation amenities; and open the new roadway network, parking and service area. Phase 4 will consist of constructing the pool, courts, fields and play areas; refresh face of existing north and south buildings; and renovate the interior of the two existing north and south buildings as necessary.

THE VILLAGE SCHOOL ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, + HIGH SCHOOL RENOVATIONS location: houston, texas PGAL was selected to provide architectural design services for renovations to The Village School’s elementary, middle, and high schools. The projects include the renovation of 14 classrooms in the elementary and middle schools, including new finishes, lighting, and mechanical systems. The existing nurse’s station was also enlarged to accommodate the school’s growing population.

Recreation and athletic spaces were also included. The existing ballet hall was remodeled, including new flooring that allows for more flexibility in supported uses, such as ballet, yoga, and aerobics, and a new ball field was designed on an adjacent vacant lot. The administrative offices and support spaces in the high school were renovated with new finishes and lighting.

THE VILLAGE SCHOOL NEW HIGH SCHOOL location: houston, texas PGAL was selected to provide architectural design services for the new high school complex at the Village School. Phase 1 of the project includes a 27,000-square-foot, 13-classroom building. Additional program includes two teaching laboratories, an art room, café, nurse station and infirmary for dorm students, and administrative space. The building accommodates technology infrastructure to support a more digitally supported curriculum. The design features classrooms that open to common areas for a more dynamic, larger, and flexible learning environment.

THE VILLAGE SCHOOL PHASE 2 location: houston, texas The second of a three-phased masterplan, this project includes a 42,000-square-foot expansion to the existing Phase 1 building (also designed by PGAL). The addition includes eight general classrooms, a learning resource center, teacher work rooms, full-service cafeteria, and two teacher work rooms. To support the school’s strong STEAM program, the new facility includes more specialized learning spaces including four teaching laboratories, a technology lab, an art room with 3D print capabilities, a black box theater with sound and prop rooms, and a ballet dance studio.

The design and construction was fast-tracked so that design and construction was completed in nine months in time for a one month move in prior to the beginning of the school year.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY PINE GROVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MODERNIZATION location: delray beach, florida Pine Grove Elementary School is a 58-year old campus on a nine-acre site. PGAL was tasked with transforming the aging school into a modern, safe, community-connected educational facility. Of the three existing buildings on site, two will remain open and undergo renovations; a new large classroom and cafeteria building will be constructed along with new site amenities and more efficient circulation. The design and construction will be phased to maintain occupancy while the construction and renovations take place.

The exterior design ties all three buildings together to create a unified campus while also fitting in perfectly in the surrounding neighborhood, all inspired by the historic architecture of Delray Beach. Stucco finishes, sunshades, architectural details, along with playful colors make this vibrant school a welcomed beacon of education. The reorganization of the school campus provides an opportunity to place the administrative offices in the front to welcome students and parents, provide easy access to the new cafeteria, and the creation of courtyard spaces for students to learn and play while providing optimal visual connection for staff.
