CLASS of 2022 Senior Edition
A Celebration of Graduating Seniors Pepperdine University | Spring 2022
Alaina Housley
This Edition is Dedicated in Memory of:
Dev Singh
letter from the
Senior Edition Editor Seniors, Congratulations on your graduation and all your scholastic milestones! As the Pepperdine Affirmation Statement rightly puts it, “the student, as a person of infinite dignity, is the heart of the educational enterprise”; never have these words been truer than for the Class of 2022. These seniors are spectacular, with “spectacular” meaning “full of little spectacles.” Pepperdine is full of little spectacles that, together, create such an extraordinary university bursting at the seams with excellency, passion and a determination to succeed. Pepperdine Graphic Media publishes our annual Senior Edition to commemorate the students who make up the graduating class. Through these tributes, we hope to give you a moment to reflect on the slices of life — the little spectacles — that provide our university with its distinct spirit.
When I set out to serve as the editor of the Senior Edition, I had no idea the wonderful number of caring parents I would meet through emails and phone calls, as well as the administrators I would work with side-by-side to ensure our graduates — my friends — were not only acknowledged but properly celebrated. One father, sensing my own stress over schoolwork, prayed for me over the phone. I hope our Senior Edition, produced by students and for students, is a keepsake for you to look back on in the years to come. It is an honor to be invited into such an important time in these students’ lives. Thank you for allowing Pepperdine Graphic Media to be a part of it. In true Pepperdinian nature, we celebrate and strive as one.

letter from the
PGM Executive Editor One thing about college is people love to talk about it. When somebody finds out you’re in college, they will probably want to tell you about their experience and will frequently use cliché sayings. “These will be the best four years of your life” and “College will be over in the blink of an eye.” Some will say they met their best friends in college, and others will say the college experience was life-changing. Sayings like these exist on Pepperdine’s campus, too. A less cheerful saying I have heard is that the Class of 2022 received the worst of Pepperdine’s luck. People say we never got a “normal” semester. While normal is hard — and possibly futile — to define, it is true we experienced difficult times during our undergraduate education at Pepperdine.
Most of all, we had the gift of experiencing our senior year and graduation with each other after 15 months of virtual instruction. The important thing about all of these moments is that we, Pepperdine’s Class of 2022, experienced them together. So, I would like to edit the previously mentioned saying about the Class of 2022. Instead, I would like to say that we are strong. We are passionate. We are supportive. We are closer than ever before. More than that, however: We are graduating.
In November 2018, the Borderline Shooting in Thousand Oaks, Calif., caused the Pepperdine Class of 2022 to lose Alaina Housley, one of our own.
After spending the past four years at Pepperdine completing our undergraduate degrees while living through such a mixture of experiences, it is time to celebrate.
The next day, the Woolsey Fire threated the place we had just started calling home.
We have accomplished amazing things during these experiences and we will continue to do so.
In March of 2020, many of us were sent home from studying abroad, and others were sent home from the Malibu campus.
We have students going to graduate school and others beginning their careers. We have other students traveling and still others improving the world through community service.
Then, in November 2021, the Class of 2022 lost another one of our own with the death of Dev “Dave” Even though graduation can be intimidating, we must remember everything we have experienced and Singh. all we have accomplished. Pepperdine has prepared Even though these times were immensely difficult, us for what is next, and no matter what life throws at there were also many joy-filled times. us, we will always be Waves. We experienced our first year at Pepperdine in person, with an in-person NSO.
Congratulations, Class of 2022.
Many of us got to experience some time studying abroad, even if it was not as much time as we expected.

1. Information Booth
Services and Livestream The Seaver College commencement ceremony will be broadcast online, live and ondemand for future viewing. The livestream will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of the commencement ceremony and can be viewed on the commencement website (https://www.pepperdine.edu/commencement/).
Covid-19 As of April 6, masks are not required outdoors. COVID-19 policies are subject to change.
What to Expect It is recommended that you bring sunscreen and a hat as sun-sensitive seating areas will be extremely limited. As of April 6, due to the current county guidelines, there will not be concessions available at the ceremony, but water bottles will be made available for all graduates. Guests are welcome to bring their own water to the graduation ceremony. The President, Provost and Dean will present and confer degrees at this ceremony. Remarks will be given by the commencement speaker. Graduates will have the opportunity to process across the stage, hear their name announced, receive their diploma covers, and have photos taken by a professional photography service. Guests are encouraged to stay in their seats for the duration of the ceremony. Diplomas will be mailed to your permanent address approximately eight to twelve weeks after degrees are conferred on April 30. Make sure you have a valid mailing address recorded with OneStop to ensure you receive your diploma. Pepperdine Diploma Policy: Pepperdine University awards one diploma for each level of academic degree earned (e.g., bachelor’s, master’s). This diploma reflects all majors/program completed for that level of degree.
Information Receiving Your Diploma 1. The dean of Seaver College will ask the respective candidates for master’s and, later in the ceremony, bachelor’s degrees to rise. 2. Remain standing until your particular degree has been formally conferred by the president. 3. When instructed by the faculty ushers, your row will stand and you will march forward to receive your diploma. 4. Enter the stage on the right, shake hands with the president, exit to the left and return to your seat. Be aware of the photographers who will take your picture upon receipt of your diploma and when you exit the stage.
Recessional Following the benediction, the platform party will exit, followed by the graduates and then the faculty.
After Graduation Before you leave campus, please deposit your rental gown at the Herff Jones table in Alumni Park. The cap and tassel are yours to keep, as well as the sash you received if you purchased one in advance.
Photographs Graduates will be photographed as they receive their diplomas during the commencement ceremony by GradImages (gradimages.com). In the past, GradImages has been able to deliver proofs by email within 24 hours to graduates who indicate an email address on cards. Please use this photography service and remain seated during the ceremony.

We will always love you, and we will always miss you, Your advisers
KARL WINTER Hebrews 12: 1 …and let us run with endurance the race set before us Karl, you have had an amazing “race” through your 4 years at Pepperdine. This life verse resonates on so many levels, as you had the privilege of running (and racing) cross country and track throughout your time at Pepperdine. No one could have predicted the obstacles that would occur during your college “race” (fires, shootings, and a pandemic to name a few). Yet you have endured them with patience (most of the time) and grace. You have made lifelong friendships and truly embraced all it is “to be a Wave.” As you graduate from Pepperdine and look toward your next phase of life, graduate school, and move on to another year of running at Syracuse, always remember God is leading the way (be grateful and humble) and that your family will always be your biggest supporters. — Mom and Dad, Karina, Alex and Daniel
ALICIA OUMSANG
Happy graduation day, sweet and beautiful Kiley. Always remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you’ll ever know. We are so proud of you and love you very much! Love, Mom, Dad, Taylor and Braden
KILEY DISTELRATH
Alicia, we are so proud of you and what you have accomplished over the years! We can’t wait to see what you do in the future, and we love you! Congratulations!! Love, Mom, Dad, and Cassandra
AARON EKENSTAM Your commitment as a student and your passion for living a balanced life are qualities that enabled you to achieve all that you have while pursuing Bachelors of Arts in History and Spanish - and graduating with honors! Your adventures in Argentina, South America, and here have sparked so much joy in your life and opened your mind to the broader world. We pray that you discover your true purpose and live life to the fullest. We are so proud and will always love and support you as you make your own path in life. Lots of Love, Dad, Mom, Ryan, and Annika
RACHEL AHRENS Congratulations on all you have accomplished and the beautiful young woman you are today. We are so proud of all that you have achieved during your time at Pepperdine on and off the court. From the records you have set with the Waves Volleyball team to the honor roll accomplishments in the classroom, you did it with the utmost dignity, grace and gratitude that makes you the person you’ve become. Love, Mom, Dad, Kyle, and the rest of your family who has supported you along the way.
SEAN ANDREW ALLINSON “True happiness is like a bird that might land on your ship, but never if you stand guard to catch it. Instead improve your ship and sail into warmer waters, the bird will land when you aren’t looking.” —CGP Grey Congratulations Sean on four years of hard work, self discovery, and lifelong memories. We are so proud of who you are! —Love, Mom and Dad
Rogan Rongley Congratulations, Rogan! Continue to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and love others as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40). We love you and are proud of you, Dad & Mom

ARIELLE LEVISTE BATANGAS, PHILIPPINES
My ever dearest Arielle, I cannot exactly put into words how happy and proud I am of you. Your success in Pepperdine is a dream come true, not only for you, but for our family too. It was not always easy, but you made it seem like it was. You beat all odds and we could not be more fulfilled as parents. Your determination, hard work, and all those sacrifices have paid off—and with that, you passed the test of time with flying colors. Your award on leadership says it all; you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you’ll ever know. Thank you, Arielle, for all that you do for our family and for your Pepperdine community. Our lives have been more amazing and wonderful because you are the biggest part of it. So now, go out there and continue to make waves. Congratulations, our little mermaid! Love, Dad
