SITE PLAN ALMADEN BOULEVARD FITNESS LOOP

Anchoring the ďŹ tness loop are two Fitness Hubs (shown in red) at either end of Almaden Boulevard between West Santa Clara Street and West Reed Street. Here, dedicated space accommodates a wide range of programmed exercises and group gatherings. Intermediate Fitness Stations along the way (shown in blue) provide individual physical challenges as well as display trail markers for joggers. In addition, a ďŹ tness station is strategically positioned at the midpoint to utilize an existing connection to the Guadalupe River Trail, which runs parallel to Almaden Boulevard.

NORTH FITNESS HUB The large triangular median at West Santa Clara Street is a hub of activity. A bustling bus stop, bike rental station, and public art give this narrow piece of land an important urban function. By expanding the habitable area with a raised deck (to protect underlying infrastructure) and updated tree planting, the North Fitness Hub encourages many modes of healthy and sustainable transportation and physical activity. Clear instruction signage, seat wall for sitting and stretching, and drinking fountain with a bottle ďŹ ller and pet fountain give users the tools they need

SOUTH FITNESS HUB Utilizing an undeveloped piece of land owned by the San Jose PUC, the design for the South Fitness Hub offers additional space for exercise equipment and larger group gatherings. Stabilized decomposed granite provides a durable surface that is easier on the feet than concrete and a drinking fountain with bottle ďŹ ller and pet fountain is also provided here. The design for Fitness Hub also takes into account the opportunity to expand the public open space with a picnic area, playground, and

INTERPRETIVE EXERCISE EQUIPMENT The intermediate fitness stations are comprised of interpretive fitness installations with a unifying color palette and sculptural quality whose cohesive design language makes them instantly recognizable components of the overall fitness loop. Helping to define Almaden Boulevard’s identity, these stylish elements have both an appealing form and valuable function that make them as much public art as they are fitness equipment.

PROGRAMMED EXERCISE EQUIPMENT The fitness hubs are populated with exercise equipment designed for outdoor applications. The selection of equipment targets a wide range of muscle groups and facets of health ranging from weight and resistance training to cardio to balancing. Equipment that can be used by multiple people at once increases the maximum capacity and promotes group exercise, which is especially popular among the elderly. The equipment colors are customized to unify the entire fitness loop and reinforce the character of Almaden Boulevard.

SPONTANEOUS FITNESS AREAS Another exciting component of the Fitness Loop is the capacity for spontaneous, unstructured activities to take place within the loop area. These activities, such as group yoga or tai chi, can be set up organically through ofďŹ ce programs or community groups that are interested in group physical activities. These spontaneous group activities do not require permanent on-site components or signage, but can spring up in an open area with enough space for the intended activity. Several public open spaces within the Fitness Loop lend themselves to this type of loose group activity. Areas around the Center for the Performing Arts and grassy areas adjacent to the Guadalupe River Park Trail can be transformed into outdoor gyms, with only a yoga mat and a desire to get ďŹ t necessary. Programs such as the 100 Citizens, a community organization based in Southern California, connects university-level Kinesiology students with local community members to provide free exercise programs in public parks. This partnership allows students to apply their education and, in turn, provide healthy activities for the local community. This type of sustainable public health program has already spread north to San Francisco, in partnership with San Francisco State University. Locally, the Kinesiology Department of San Jose State University, less than a mile from the Fitness Loop, has expressed interest in providing such instruction in Downtown San Jose. The possibilities are endless!
