PROJECT CONTEXT AND APPROACH UNIVERSITY CIRCLE, EAST PALO ALTO
This project includes design concepts for exterior plaza renovation and reconstruction at the project site located at University Circle in East Palo Alto. Our goal is to create an active and integrated place for the users to work, relax and play. The existing site includes a generous plaza space between office buildings and hotel with various ground-floor commercial spaces. The center of the circular plaza, although aestheticallypleasing, lacks programmed space to attract users from the adjacent buildings. The proposed development seeks to increase amenity space for the project site and incorporate a campus feel that is currently lacking. By bridging the gap between the interior and exterior space, the new design will draw users outside to interact and participate in events and activites within the space. Approach: In developing conceptual thoughts for the University Circle project, our plan seeks to build on the positive assets of the existing plaza and replace static, un-programmed spaces with flexible use areas. By doing so, we will activate the central plaza with space for a diversity of experiences - activites including both structured events and casual get-togethers. The success of the project is the integration of the outdoor space with the program of the adjacent hotel and office buildings, to provide an active space for everyday users, and leasable space for the property management company.
