DLAN Play me I‘m Yours

DLAN · Play me I‘m Yours DLAN refers to WLAN (WiFi), while D stands for German Dose (tin can). It is the title of a temporary acoustic installation by Philipp Heinlein in Munich. Together with 16 other pianos, DLAN was part of »Play-me-I’m-Yours« 2016. It goes back to artist Luke Jerram’s idea of temporarily setting up pianos in public space. The installation was open to everyone from 1 to 18 September 2016.


Let’s build an acoustic bridge over the Isar river. A piano, located on Corneliusbrßcke in the middle of the river, can be played by everyone. Its sound will be transmitted across the river to both sides with tin can phones. [concept sketch from April 2016]



Isarbastion is a public platform at the southern end of Museumsinsel in the centre of Munich. The platform and the opposite river banks are all elevated 5 – 6 m above the river so it is possible to install 100 m of freely suspended wire with hardly any traffic conflicts. The two lines cross Grosse Isar (~70 m) and Kleine Isar (~110 m). The idea of a third line (~230 m, dotted line) was dropped, mainly due to the traffic noise on Reichenbachbrücke.

Soundcheck #1 says: It is possible to transmit sound through a 100 m steel-wire tin can phone. Spoken words and music can both be heard at the receiver, music is more fun. Despite all the open questions at that moment DLAN appears to be a realistic idea. [top] Soundcheck #2 says: 1/4 mm copper wire is too thin to cross the river. The tin can size defines the frequency band of the transmission. Direct contact to the instrument (guitar in this test) boosts the input volume significantly. [right]



Soundcheck #3 says: The piano sound can be picked up directly from the soundboard. Steel wire is the best material. The mechanical engineering challenges of DLAN are moderate (compared to nuclear reactors).




Wire matters – Testing various kinds of wire leads to a clear result: Neither the length nor the quality of consumer wire are sufficient. The required quality is not available on the consumer market. A request for help was sent out to Vornbäumen, producer of high-strength wire. [left]


Good wire – 4 km of high-strength steel wire provided by producer Vornbäumen. This quality is normally used for the production of crane ropes, funicular cables or stone saw cables. The wire quality is a key requirement for the realization of DLAN.

Receiver evolution



Service rope – The first connection to cross the river is a circulating service rope. It helps to pull the actual signal wire into position. Later it would remain as a maintenance backup. Together with two additional ropes it would also mark the thin, nearly invisible wire in the air.



Banners and flags help to keep the installation understandable over the long distances between the transmitter and the receivers.
