Who is Ronald James Samuels?

A MOMENT WITH RONALD J. SAMUELS

7 Stronger Together | 7

On the 1st of November 2018, Botswana Life brought on board a new Chief Executive Officer, Ronald James Samuels. Known around Botswana Life corridors as ‘Ron’, he boosts an impressive experience of over 26years in the insurance industry. We caught up with Mr. Samuels to know him a little better aside his formal profile.

What is your favorite past time? Aside from spending time with my family, I strongly believe in self-actualization and utilize the little free time I have in learning new things.

I am seasoned business man with vast experience of turning around companies to realize profits. I pride myself in creating a work force that foresights the future and strongly believe I bring the best out of the teams I work with. The board has recently approved a 5-year Botswana Life Strategy. What do you envision for the future of Botswana Life? Indeed, the board has given a go ahead on the proposed corporate strategy that is inline with the Group’s overarching mandate. The reengineered structure of the business allows for new streams of revenue generation and utilization of the seasoned human skills. Several business models such as the specialized tied agents, broker and franchise models are some of the centerfold of the new strategy.

What are you proud of about Botswana Life? I am most proud of our collective reasoning as a business, be it staff, management or board to create financial security and risk mitigation through our legacy business that ensures improved livelihood of Batswana in general. What has been your favorite thing about Botswana since you arrived? I am very much appreciative of the people in Botswana. Their mannerism and engagement have been delightful. I can also say that the Maun wetlands have grown on me. The ambiance is just remarkable.

As a market leader in our own respect, the new strategy gives Botswana Life edge to forge top of mind positioning with every individual who thinks insurance. Not only that, but we foresee a technologically advanced way of doing business with our wide bouquet of product offerings. Lastly this will guarantee that our customers are delighted with every engagement and encounter with our brand. What do you want for the employees of Botswana Life? The one thing I personally aim for is success; and I want success at all costs for the employees of Botswana Life. This will be recognized by them operating in a conducive working environment, career and education development as well as ensuring that there is a work life balance with an enriched corporate culture. To achieve all this, living the set values of the business has become imperative to me and my Executive team to ensure that we do not fail Botswana Life employees.

This is when we will usually turn to other sources like metshelo and machonisa to help us make up for the deficit. In a situation like this, a 13th cheque comes in VERY handy! And if we plan right and stick to our budget, it can easily help us cover the rent, January school fees, and even the long 90 days of January ‘til our next pay day. So what is a 13th Cheque?

13 TH

Stronger Together Stronger Together | 8

A 13th Cheque or Christmas bonus as otherwise known, is money usually paid by the employer to the employee at the end of the Traditionallyyear.a13th Cheque was a form of appreciation or acknowledgement of the employee, however in recent days it has become an option that employers may choose to include or exclude as part of their staff benefits. If a 13th cheque does not form part of your employee benefits, not all is lost. You can create a 13th Cheque for yourself. That’s right! By putting money aside every month, you can create a 13th Cheque for yourself and a flexible one at that. Things like how much you’d like to receive in the end, and how much you should put aside now, how frequently you will contribute, and even when you will withdraw the 13th cheque, all become decisions that you get to Withinmake.BIHL Group, employees are afforded a 13th Cheque deduction option where payroll can deduct an agreed percentage or amount from your monthly income, and have it put aside towards your 13th Cheque. That’s not all! To enhance your 13th Cheque, you can then opt to have your 13th Cheque invested in one of the Bifm Unit Trusts funds. In short, here’s how it works: When the festive spend-a-thon hits and we all find ourselves drawn to the sales in the malls, we sometimes get so swept away by the splurge, swiping and spending, that we find ourselves wondering what happened to the rent money or the January school fees money. create O ne ! 6 Avoid gossiping. Gossip affects office culture negatively, hurts people’s reputation in their absence, and bears no fruit.

1 Remember your “Thank You’s” Showing gratitude to fellow employees says a lot about individual courtesy and sense of gratitude. Seize opportunities to thank those who assist you in getting things done.

7 Avoid interrupting colleagues when they are still talking. Listen to the ideas and opinions of others. If a great idea suddenly pops to mind while a colleague is still speaking, rather note it down and share after they are done talking.

2 Use your ‘inside voice’. Its easy to forget this one. Yelling or shouting from across the room can be very disruptive to those around you. It interrupts other’s concentration and productivity.

5 Avoid the use of profanity. Not only does it make you look bad; it is inappropriate, and it makes others uncomfortable as well.

3Show new employees some friendliness. Entering a new workplace can be daunting and assimilating to a new office culture and job is not always easy. It’s a good gesture to intentionally reach out and show extra kindness.

Survival demands innovativeness. Innovation can be defined as a process that involves multiple activities to uncover new ways of doing things. “It should not be confused with creation since this can be defined as the act of making, inventing, or producing However, something.new innovations can be realized with creativity.

People need to think outside the box in order to create incremental enhancements. “said American, solutionist thinker Ben Jense. Innovate yourself. The fastgrowing global industry and constant discoveriestechnologicaldemandthat we keep relevant, better yet, stay ahead of the game as individuals and organizations.

For businesses, maintaining an innovative approach is vital and needed for staying in the same wave length as your target audience, maintaining market share. Personal innovation is also important in developing a wellrounded successful individual, who ultimately forms part of a larger Personalorganization.innovation is the creative and intentional act of making a change in your life, with the aim of making your world a better one and this can be on a professional, personal or family level. “Personal Innovation picks up where personal development left off”, says Lena Edmondsonentrepreneurial couch. The creative process of rethinking and reshaping the way you view and so things on a daily and improve with each passing day. The process takes commitment and discipline, to become better than you were yesterday. The word innovation itself is about doing something new, its about fresh ideas, improvement and advancement. Personal development is a beneficial approach for many to apply to their lives to improve, however look for innovative ways to reenergize your development by looking at innovative ways to improve upon what you already have set in place on a daily. Organizations on the other hand, risk staying behind and loosing market share when they don’t embrace innovation, just like with loosing grip on technology. If you have customers, who are currently satisfied with your products and service, the basic principle of innovation demands that you take it to the next level and intentionally exceed their expectations. Push for a higher level of success. Set time aside to sit and review things with fresh eyes and to take note of new trends and innovation in the industry. Being proactive is key, innovation does not just happen. An innovation strategy is a good progress tracking tool for personal and organizational growth. The strategy takes in set of goals, habits and daily actions that insure relevance over time. Both short term and long term goals are then reviewed to track progress. For high success rate in organizations, human resources at individual levels should learn something new every day. Implementing the power of ‘yes’. Yes, to learning new skills. Yes, to a new team project does develop innovation skills. The more we say yes to innovation, the more we discover our potential, and are put in a better position to.

STEP 2: PULLING BOARDS OFF FOR THE BOTTOM You’ll need two boards for the bottom of the wine rack, you can use the center of the pallet to get these boards. Using a hammer and a pry bar or whatever you have to get in between the boards, hammer it in and pry them off. This may take some practice and be frustrating because the ends have a tendency to crack and break, but eventually you’ll get the hang of it or get quality wood that wont crack.

STEP 5: HOLES FOR THE GLASS

STEP 1: CUTTING THE PALLET

On one board you need to make holes for the wine glasses. Most pallets are going to be around 40 inches wide and i used around the standard size wine glass but you can make the sizes fit your needs. For mine, I mark 4.5 inches in from the edge and then mark 3 more holes of that one 4 inches from the next. The depth I make them is 1.5-1.75 inches into the board. Then I do the same to the other side.

DIY PALLET WINE RACK

STEP 4: PalletsSANDINGare usually rough so I sand them down to make them look better and prevent getting splinters. Depending on how rough it is, I just used 120 grit and then 220 grit to finish.

STEP 3: CUTTING SMALL PIECES You’ll need 3 smaller pieces to separate the board that holds the glasses and supports the bottom. You can get these by cutting up the bigger section of pallet that the boards are nailed in to. The pieces need to be the length of the board and 1x1 or a little bigger if you’d like. You can use a hand saw to cut them up or whatever you have. I used a circular saw to cut them off the pallet then used a band saw to cut them to dimension. This is a simple wine rack made from the end section of a pallet. This can be made in around an hour and a half depending on what tools you use. You can make it with hand tools and a drill but is a lot easier with power tools. It’s simple, easy and cheap to make, and women love them.

Use a circular saw or hand saw and cut in the indention of the pallet where fork lift forks go. The height of the wine rack will be roughly 16-17 inches tall depending on where you cut it.

STEP 6: DRILLING THE HOLES

STEP 8: PUTTING IT TOGETHER I put the boards together and line them up with the bottom of the rack to make sure everything goes together well. I clamp them to my table and pre drill the holes and counter sink them. I use 3 inch screws to put it all together but you can use smaller screws and put it together in sections if you’d like. Make sure you pre drill all your holes either way so it doesn’t split the wood.

STEP 9: FINISHED, HANGING

The wine rack is done, now all you have to do it hang it. I use 2, 2.5 inch screws and put them in studs because all the weight from the wine bottles. Depending on where you’re hanging it and the studs location, I put them in one stud, skip one and put them in the other so there’s 32 inches between screws. Make sure you use a level before putting in the second screw.

I just use a piece of wood around and inch wide, center it on the hole and mark where I need to make the cuts. Using whatever saw you have, cut the pieces out and sand the rough edges.

STEP 7: CUTTING GAPS FOR THE GLASSES

I use a 1-3/8 inch forstner bit on my drill press but you can use a hand drill if you don’t have one, and drill out your marked holes.
