EDITORIAL Estimado lector,

C

uando termina el verano costarricense y caen las primeras lluvias, la naturaleza vuelve a la plenitud. Exuberante vegetación salpicada de flores de todos los colores, cálidas lluvias y el océano regresando con olas más grandes. La temporada alta ha terminado. Para los que vivimos aquí, es la mejor época del año complaciéndonos con temperaturas más benignas, cosechas de fruta, no más incendios forestales y menos tráfico en la Costanera Sur. Es un momento excelente para aprovechar los precios de temporada, conocer mejor a los lugareños y visitar alguno de los acogedores bares y restaurantes del lugar. El clima es más fresco con mañanas soleadas y aguaceros por la tarde, justo para sentarse en la terraza a disfrutar de un libro interesante o invitar amigos a una barbacoa.

Con el mejor evento de Dominical, el Semana Santa Classic (ver página 36), la temporada de surf ha comenzado. Además de surf, esta pequeña ciudad tiene mucho más que ofrecer. Es la sede de «Happy Feet», una escuela de baile y ballet para niños que ya se ha presentado en San José. Actualmente están preparando otro evento muy especial para el 1 de junio (consulte la página 32).

Nuestros Guardavidas de Costa Ballena nos llenan de orgullo, acaban de obtener la certificación ISLA a nivel nacional en Guanacaste. Estos jóvenes salvan vidas casi todos los días y dependen totalmente del soporte económico de nuestra comunidad (lea la página 40).

hen the Costa Rican summer ends and the first rains fall, nature comes to full life again. Lush green vegetation, dotted with blossom of all colors, warm rain showers, and the return of the ocean’s grander waves. The high season has ended. For those of us living here, it is the best time of the year pleasing us with milder temperatures, fruit harvests from all over the land, an end to wild fires, and less traffic on the Costanera Highway. It is an excellent time to take advantage of the green season prices, to get to know the locals better and visit one of the welcoming bars and restaurants along the coast. It is a cooler “insider” summer with sunny mornings and rain showers in the afternoon, just right for sitting on your terrace to enjoy an interesting book or invite friends over for a BBQ. The surf season has started with Dominical´s best event: the Semana Santa Classic (see page 36).

This little town has much more to offer than surf. It is the “Happy Feet” headquarters – a dance and ballet school for kids. The Happy Feet company has already performed in San Jose and now, they are getting ready for another very special presentation on June 1st (see page 32). Our

Costa Ballena Lifeguards fill us with pride, they have just achieved the ISLA Certification on a national level in Guanacaste. These young men and women save lives nearly every day and fully depend on the funding of our community (see page 40).

An endearing story about a “goat hotel” high in the mountains waits for you on page 42. On page 49, we are innovating our new Uvita map, please give us your feedback! ara continuar explicando el tema de la seguridad en nuestras comunidades costeras, aquí hay otra historia que he escuchado. “Estábamos en esta hermosa playa sin nadie alrededor, así que dejamos nuestra bolsa de playa encima de nuestra toalla y caminamos hacia el océano para un chapuzón. Justo después de que metí la cabeza debajo del agua, volví a mirar y un hombre recogía mi bolsa para luego correr de regreso a la jungla”.

Si se encuentra en cualquier playa, no solo en Costa Rica, no debe dejar sus pertenencias desatendidas. Si hay alguien cerca que se vea digno de confianza, pida que las observen.

Estoy hablando de una toalla y sandalias, no de un teléfono o pasaporte. Puede dejar su pasaporte en la caja fuerte en su hotel y tomar una foto de la página principal y la página con el sello de entrada. Por supuesto, también puede dejar su teléfono en la caja fuerte, sin embargo a menudo lo ocupamos con nosotros.

Para la playa, traería una bolsa de plástico con cierre hermético, como una bolsa de granola, y pondría el teléfono en ella. Serviría como protección en caso de un aguacero y si alguien mira mi toalla verá una bolsa de granola, no el teléfono. Luego, si tuviera que dejar mi toalla y mi bolsa por unos minutos, y no hubiera nadie alrededor, cavaría un agujero y pondría el teléfono en él y luego lo cubriría con mi toalla. De hecho, me gustaría cavar dos agujeros, por lo que tomaría más tiempo para averiguar dónde está el teléfono.

La mayoría de los ladrones se esconden en la sombra junto a la arena y esperan a que usted salte al agua. Saldrán corriendo de la maleza, agarrarán la bolsa y volverán a los árboles. Entonces, si no puede enterrar su bolsa, al menos llévela con usted lo más alejado posible de la línea de árboles, para que tengan que ir más lejos para conseguirla. ■

Stay Safe on the Costa Ballena ~ Part 2

T

o further expound on the issue of safety in our coastal communities, here is another story I’ve heard. “We were on this beautiful beach with no one around so we left our beach bag on our towel and walked down to the ocean for a dip. Right after I ducked my head under the water, I looked back and saw a man picking up my bag and then running back into the jungle.”

If you are at any beach, not just in Costa Rica, then you should not leave your belongings unattended. If there is someone nearby who looks trustworthy, I’ll ask them to watch it. I’m talking of a towel and flops, not a phone or passport though. You can leave your passport in a safe in your hotel and take a picture of the front page and the page with the entry stamp. Of course, you could leave your phone in the safe, too, but the reality is the phone is often coming with us.

For the beach, I would bring a plastic sealable bag, like a bag for granola, and I’d put the phone in that. That’s for random rain shower protection and if someone looked on my towel they are going to see a bag of granola, not the phone. Then if I had to leave my towel and my bag for a few minutes, and no one was around, I would dig a hole and put the phone in it and then cover it back up with my towel. I would actually dig two holes so it would take longer for someone to figure out where the phone was.

Most thieves hide in the shade just off the sand and wait for you to jump in the water.

They will run out, grab the bag, and run back into the trees. So if you cannot bury your bag, at least take it with you as far as you can from the tree line so they have farther to run to get it. ■

n sistema natural saludable pasa por poseer las cinco categorías de “consumidores”. Por ejemplo en el océano existe el fitoplancton, que es el primer escalón en la pirámide alimenticia, se trata de algas microscópicas, que son comidas por el zooplancton, diminutos animalitos microscópicos ya sea en sus etapas larvarias, juveniles o adultas, que son a su vez consumidos por crustáceos, corales, moluscos y pequeños peces filtradores. Por encima de ellos vienen los carnívoros, básicamente peces depredadores y cetáceos.

Y en la cumbre destacan los superdepredadores, básicamente tiburones y orcas. En el presente, la sobrepesca a escala mundial está afectando sobre todo a los depredadores (atunes y otros peces que comemos todos los días, marlín, dorado, espada, pargo, róbalo) y filtradores (crustáceos como camarones). Los perjudicados son los depredadores tope, los tiburones, quienes son los encargados de mantener el sistema limpio y saludable.

también acumulan todas las toxinas de la pirámide alimenticia, muy especialmente mercurio. Aparte de esto, los tiburones no pueden excretar la urea como los mamíferos. Su “orina” se elimina a través de la sangre, por lo que en su carne existe una altísima cantidad de ácido úrico. Básicamente, la carne de tiburón es tóxica.

En Costa Rica es muy popular el ceviche y hasta el filé de bolillo. Bolillo es el nombre aplicado a varias especies de tiburones, que se pescan sin miramiento, porque caen en trasmallos y palangres.

Muy afectado es el tiburón martillo, en peligro de extinción, quienes acuden a las aguas del Pacifico costarricense a reproducirse.

Costa Rica con principios fundados en la ecología, debería ser el primero a nivel mundial en prohibir tajantemente la pesca de tiburones de todo tipo, con ello siendo ejemplo para el resto del planeta.

Sin tiburones, no habrá pescado ni un océano saludable para las generaciones venideras. ■

¿Ceviche de tiburón - Bolillo?

A

healthy natural system is expected to possess five “consumer” categories. For example in the ocean the first stage of the food pyramid is the phytoplankton, a microscopic algae, which is eaten by zooplankton, tiny microscopic animals either in their larval, juvenile or adult stages, which are then consumed by shellfish, corals, mollusks and small filtering fish. Above them are carnivores, basically predators and cetaceans.

At the very top of the pyramid are the super predators, basically sharks and orcas. At present, global overfishing is mainly affecting predators (tuna and other fish that we eat every day, marlin, mahi mahi, swordfish, snapper, sea bass) and filtering fish, such as crustaceans and shrimp. The ones in trouble are the top predators, specifically sharks which are responsible for keeping the system clean and healthy.

They feed on sick animals and carrion, and also accumulate

all toxins of the food pyramid, especially mercury. Apart from this, sharks cannot excrete urea as mammals, by urinating.

Their «urine» is eliminated through the blood, so in his flesh is a high amount of uric acid. Basically, shark meat is toxic!

In Costa Rica “ceviche” and even shark steaks (bolillo in Spanish) are very popular. Bolillo is the denomination applied to several species of sharks that are caught without regard, falling in gillnets and longlines.

Very affected is the endangered hammerhead shark, which comes to Costa Rica´s Pacific coast for breeding.

Costa Rica with principles based on ecology, should be the first in the world in categorically prohibiting shark fishing of any kind, and thereby setting an example for the rest of the planet.

Without sharks, there will be no healthy fish or oceans for future generations. ■

Árbol de Mayo

E

l árbol de Mayo (Vochysia ferruginea), también llamado Botarrama, areno colorado, barbaleche, cuaruba o cenescudo, es una especie perenne. Son árboles que alcanzan 30 a 50 m de altura. Sus flores son muy vistosas, tienen un cáliz con 5 lóbulos rojizo anaranjados, uno en forma de espolón alargado y recurvado y 3 pétalos de 1 cm y de un brillante color amarillo.

Su fruto se encuentra en cápsulas de color verde cuando inmaduro y marrón al madurarse, con hasta 6 semillas por fruto. Semillas aladas, alargadas, con cubierta seminal y pelusas de color marrón.

Durante este verano, a lo largo de la carretera desde San Isidro hasta Ojochal, nos ha impresionado con sus espléndidas flores adornando el canope de las colinas y montañas.

Después la vista ya no los detecta.

Los árboles son un componente esencial para los seres vivos, mediante la fotosíntesis transforman dióxido de carbono en oxígeno, elemento indispensable para la vida en el planeta. Regulan el agua de lluvia y la luz solar gracias a sus copas, sus ramas, tronco y raíces que albergan todo tipo de organismos vivientes. Hay increíbles relaciones simbióticas entre los árboles y organismos como los insectos, aves y hongos.

El árbol provee fuego, techo, descanso, recreación, protección, y sobre todo produce el oxígeno que necesitamos para vivir. A través de los siglos, ha sido un importante recurso de desarrollo social, cultural, económico y científico, acompañando de forma vital la historia de la humanidad.

A nivel mundial, el 15 de junio se le rinde homenaje a estos magníficos seres que ayudan a purificar y refrescar el aire así como a embellecer nuestros paisajes.

En Costa Rica, el árbol de Guanacaste fue declarado como el Árbol Nacional. ¿Qué le parece si proponemos el árbol de Mayo como símbolo de Costa Ballena? ■

he May tree (Vochysia ferruginea), also called Botarrama, red sand, barbaleche, cuaruba or cenescudo, is a perennial species. They are trees that reach 30 to 50 meters in height. Its flowers are very flamboyant, they have a calyx with 5 reddish orange lobes, one in the shape of an elongated and curved spur, and 3 petals of 1 centimeter, and a bright yellow color.

Its fruit is found in green capsules when immature and brown when ripe, with up to 6 seeds per fruit. The seeds are winged and elongated, with a seminal cover and brown lint.

During this summer, along the road from San Isidro to Ojochal, we were impressed with its splendid flowers adorning the canopy of the hills and mountains. Then the view no longer reflects their presence.

Trees are an essential component for living beings, through photosynthesis they transform carbon dioxide into oxygen, an essential element for life on the planet. They regulate rainwater and sunlight thanks to their tree tops, branches, trunks and roots that house all kinds of living organisms.

There are incredible symbiotic relationships between trees and organisms such as insects, birds and fungi.

Trees provide fire, shelter, rest, recreation, protection, and above all produce the oxygen, we need to live. Over the centuries, trees have been an important resource for social, cultural, economic and scientific development, vitally accompanying the history of humanity.

On a global level, on June 15, a tribute is paid to these magnificent beings which help purify and refresh the air as well as beautify our landscapes.

In Costa Rica, the Guanacaste tree was declared the National Tree. What do you think if we propose the May tree as a symbol of Costa Ballena? ■

eminismo significa la lucha por la equidad e igualdad de oportunidades, derechos y deberes. En Costa Rica, sólo catorce de los ochenta y dos cantones cuentan con una mujer alcaldesa. Las mujeres tienen 25% menos acceso al trabajo que los hombres, y reciben salarios por debajo de los de sus compañeros con similares capacidades y responsabilidades.

Las mujeres lideresas han sido por mucho tiempo calificadas de brujas, mandonas, marimachos o locas, por querer un mundo más inclusivo, sin acoso callejero y sin violencia intrafamiliar. Muchas han prevalecido en carreras profesionales en áreas como ciencias y tecnología, otras han encontrado techos de cristal, que no les ha permitido asumir puestos directivos para los que están más que preparadas. ¡Ha llegado el tiempo de cambiar!

Todo cambio comienza por uno mismo, así que debemos escucharnos y no callar. Tan potente es la palabra cuando es verdad y lo que nos toca es compartir nuestra diaria realidad.

Recientemente se llevó a cabo LAB-Lideresas, impartido en San José, bajo la realización de Fábrica de Historias que contó con el apoyo de UNICEF, la Embajada de EEUU y el despacho de Vicepresidencia del Gobierno de la República. En este taller he descubierto la “sororidad”, una alianza que viene a impulsar la solidaridad entre mujeres, que nos afirma que la unión hace la fuerza, y que nuestra hermandad nos hace brillar con más intensidad. Asimismo, en nuestra participación en la Cumbre Women Connecting, se nos confirmó que aunque a veces lo parezca, no estamos solas. Abriendo nuestro corazón encontraremos aliadas, que lucharán con nosotras por un futuro en igualdad. Si en profunda reflexión, conseguimos identificar nuestro propósito en la vida, comprenderemos que la palabra “imposible” no debe estar en el diccionario personal. ¡Porque juntas podemos más y nada o nadie nos puede detener! ■

Female Leadership, Empathy and Sisterhood

eminism stands for the fight for equity and equality of opportunities, rights and duties. In Costa Rica, only fourteen of the eighty-two cantons have a woman mayor. Women have 25% less access to work than men, and receive salaries below those of their peers with similar skills and responsibilities.

Women leaders have long been described as witches, bosses, tomboys or madmen, for wanting a more inclusive world, without street harassment, and intrafamily violence.

Many have prevailed in professional careers in areas such as science and technology, others have found glass ceilings, which have not allowed them to assume managerial positions for those who are more than prepared. The time has come to change!

All change begins with oneself, so we must listen to ourselves and not be silent. So powerful is the word when it is true and what we have to do is to share our daily reality.

The social problem is not women, nor their minds, but some

currents of thought that try to subject women to an archaic role. Therefore, I also invite men to open their minds and support gender equality.

Recently LAB-Lideresas was held, given in San José, under the Factory of Stories that had the support of UNICEF, the US Embassy and the office of Vice President of the Government of the Republic. In this workshop, I discovered “sorority,” an alliance that promotes solidarity among women, which affirms that unity is strength, and that our brotherhood makes us shine with more intensity. Also, in our participation in the Women Connecting Summit, we confirmed that although it may seem so, we are not alone. By opening our hearts we will find allies, who will fight with us for a future in equality. If in deep reflection, we manage to identify our purpose in life, we will understand that the word “impossible” should not be in the personal dictionary. Because together we can do more and nothing or no one can stop us! ■

El lenguaje de la danza: lenguaje del ser

“L

a vida es movimiento, en todo movimiento puede habitar la poesía, es decir, en el cuerpo siempre está la posibilidad de poesía, de arte y de danza.”

El cuerpo es la primera referencia del ser y el movimiento su lenguaje. Es por esta razón que la danza se encuentra dentro de las manifestaciones más importantes y trascendentales del desarrollo humano, desde las danzas rituales, el circo, la danza clásica, el folklore, hasta los estilos de danza urbana.

El cuerpo ha sido el escenario para el imaginario, las emociones, las historias y la poesía, entre otras.

La danza ya sea en su ámbito profesional o recreativo mantiene un amplio espectro de estilos y técnicas. Dentro de las primeras que se crearon se encuentra el ballet, implementada por Luis XIV conocido como el “Rey Sol». Desde ese entonces, un sinfín de artistas han dedicado su vida a la exploración del cuerpo y del movimiento para crear un lenguaje, tal es el caso de Isadora Duncan que rompió con los

esquemas del ballet y le dio vida a la danza moderna. Una gran variedad de artistas lo han hecho también hasta llegar a las técnicas contemporáneas, influenciadas por la cultura urbana y popular. Cabe recalcar que en este contexto llamado cuerpo también se encuentran las emociones, el imaginario y el alma, es decir, la danza no solo involucra al cuerpo físico.

Este año se realizará el Primer Encuentro Internacional de Arte Escénico Contemporáneo P. Escena del 28 al 30 de Junio en el Teatro BMS y en las instalaciones de Trincheras en Pérez Zeledón. Dicho festival albergará artistas de países como México, Nicaragua, El Salvador y Costa Rica, los cuales compartirán su arte y su ser, a través de la danza y el movimiento en las cinco funciones de este festival. Los invitamos a ser partícipes de esta celebración enfocada en enriquecer la cultura y el arte en la zona sur de Costa Rica. ■

A great variety of artists have also done so until they reached contemporary techniques, influenced by urban and popular culture. In this context, our bodies also include emotions, the imaginary and the soul, that means dance does not only involve the physical body.

This year, the First International Encounter of Contemporary Scenic Art P. Escena will take place from June 28 to 30 at the BMS Theater and at the Trincheras facilities in Pérez Zeledón. This festival will house artists from countries such as Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica, who will share their art and their being, through dance and movement in the five functions of this festival. We invite you to participate in this celebration focused on enriching culture and art in the southern zone of Costa Rica. ■

The body is the first reference of the being and the movement is its language. It is for this reason that dance is found in any transcendental manifestation of human development, from ritual dances, circus, classical dance, folklore, to urban dance styles. The body has been the setting for the imaginary, emotions, stories and poetry, among others.

The dance either in its professional or recreational scope maintains a wide spectrum of styles and techniques.

Alguna vez ha caminado en la naturaleza y tenido la sensación de que le estaban observando? Por supuesto que sí, especialmente en un lugar tan bio-intenso como Costa Rica. Algunas de esas criaturas bien camufladas, escondidas en los arbustos, son las bejuquillas (especies de Oxybelis). Con sus cuerpos largos y delgados y una coloración que les proporciona camuflaje, están perfectamente adaptadas para una vida entre las ramas y las hojas. Con su visión binocular cazan durante el día pequeños lagartos, aves, ranas y mamíferos. Mientras hacen esto, mantienen sus lenguas extendidas, solo moviendo las puntas verticalmente. Esto es diferente que en otras serpientes donde ambas puntas de la lengua se extienden en direcciones opuestas, esto para ubicar a sus presas. También los movimientos del cuerpo de estas serpientes son como vides movidas por el viento. Así que cuando se acercan a su presa, se detendrán brevemente y se acercarán repetidamente hasta que estén lo suficientemente cerca para atrapar a sus víctimas. Las bejuquilla café tienen colmillos con veneno para inmovilizar a sus presas. A los humanos, ese veneno podría causar una ligera hinchazón y algo de dolor, pero sin poner en peligro la vida. Solo cuando se sienten amenazadas y no pueden escapar, levantarán la cabeza y abrirán la boca como una amenaza. En nuestra región tenemos una especie de bejuquillas, la bejuquilla café (Oxybelis aeneus). Las otras dos especies de Costa Rica tienen una coloración más verde, son la bejuquilla de hocico corto (Oxybelis brevirostris) y la bejuquilla verde más grande (Oxybelis fulgidus). Esta última se puede ver en exhibición en el Parque Reptilandia, donde también se puede admirar a su prima hondureña, la hermosa bejuquilla amarilla o bejuquilla de Roatan (Oxybelis wilsoni). ¡Con un poco de suerte, le muestran sus lenguas amarillas! ■

Live like a Vine

H

ave you ever walked in nature and had the feeling you were being watched? Off course you have, especially in a place as bio-intense as Costa Rica. Some of those well camouflaged critters, hidden in the bushes, are the vine snakes (Oxybelis species).

With their long slender bodies and a coloration that provides them camouflage, they are perfectly adapted for a life between the branches and leaves. With their binocular vision they hunt in the daytime for small lizards, birds, frogs and mammals. While they do this, they maintain extended tongues, only moving the tips vertically. This is different than in other snakes where both tips of the tongue stretch to opposite directions, this to locate their prey. Also the body movements of the vine snakes are like moving vines in the wind. So when they approach their prey, they will pause briefly and move closer repeatedly until they are close enough to grab their victims. Vine snakes are rear fanged so their prey will be immobilized with venom. To humans, it might cause a light swelling and some pain, but nothing life threatening. Only when they feel threatened, and cannot escape, will they raise their heads and open their mouths widely as a threat display. In our region we have one species of vine snake, the brown vine snake (Oxybelis aeneus). The two other species in Costa Rica have a more green coloration, they are the short-nosed vine snake (Oxybelis brevirostris) and the larger green vine snake (Oxybelis fulgidus). The latter can be seen on exhibit at Parque Reptilandia, but also his Honduran cousin, the gorgeous yellow or Roatan vine snake (Oxybelis wilsoni) can be admired. n Costa Rica tenemos más de 50 especies de abejas. Desde la Apis melífera (especie introducida), hasta muchas que han co-evolucionado junto a las plantas nativas, al punto que hay flores que solo son polinizadas por una única especie de abejas. De estas abejitas nativas hay una magnífica diversidad de tamaños, formas y colores y podemos destacar por su uso ancestral a las Melipona beecheii, Melipona costariquensis y la Tetragonisca angustula, comúnmente llamados jicote gato, jicote barcino y mariola, respectivamente.

Las abejas son un ejemplo de trabajo en equipo, de entrega a la comunidad y del Mutualismo dentro de los ecosistemas, ya que desarrollan de forma eficiente y organizada la vital polinización de las flores, incluyendo cerca del 70% de los alimentos para humanos.

La disminución de las abejas, es un llamado de atención a la humanidad ya que se debe a factores como la deforestación, el cambio climático, el uso de agro tóxicos, la radiación

I

n Costa Rica, we have over 50 species of bees. From the Apis melifera (an introduced species), to many others that have co-evolved with native plants. This co-evolution has led to flowers that are pollinated solely by a single species.

There is magnificent diversity in size, shape, and color amongst these native bees. However, due to their ancestral use, we will highlight the Melipona beecheii, Melipona costariquensis and the Tetragonisca angustula, commonly called Jicote Gato, Jicote Barcino and Mariola, respectively.

Bees are a wonderful example of teamwork, of service to the community, and of mutualism within ecosystems. They have developed, in an efficient and organized way, and are vital for pollination of flowers, including nearly 70% of human food.

The bee crisis is a wake-up call for humanity. Due to factors such as deforestation, climate change, the use of agro chemicals, electromagnetic radiation, and intensive management with artificial feeding and antibiotics, we are losing the bees!

onduciendo hacia el sur por la Costanera está aburrido de ver palmas de aceite y, repentinamente pasando una curva aparece una maravillosa vista de montañas cubiertas con selva tropical. Al cruzar el puente sobre el Río Savegre entra en el Corredor Biológico Paso de la Danta (CBPD).

La cordillera boscosa, llamada Fila Costeña, es la vía central del corredor. Un observador con vista aérea podría seguir la fila río arriba por 15 km hasta la Reserva Forestal Los Santos y por la costa hacia el sur unos 80 km hasta los manglares SierpeTérraba y la Península de Osa, que es la conexión de estos dos grandes bosques tropicales y en medio una multitud de pequeñas reservas naturales.

En ambos extremos del corredor hay dantas y solían haber muchas dentro de sus límites, pero el área sufrió una grave deforestación desde principios de la década de los 40 hasta mediados de la década de los 80 y todas perecieron. La última fue matada por un cazador en 1957.

tapires, son mamíferos grandes, hermosos y carismáticos, los más grandes de América Central. Un adulto pesará unos 275 kilos. El hocico prensil o tronco corto lo usa para agarrar la vegetación y jalarla hacia la boca. Conocidos como los “Jardineros del Bosque”, las dantas limpian áreas pequeñas en la selva, dejando tierras descubiertas donde una variedad de plantas puede brotar y cubrir el suelo del bosque. Adicionalmente son grandes dispersores de semillas.

El sueño del proyecto CBPD, es restaurar suficiente hábitat natural en las tierras deforestadas para que la danta regrese. Desde el inicio del proyecto en 1990, mucho bosque secundario ya se ha regenerado en antiguos repastos, tres especies de monos, pumas, lapas rojas y otras especies de aves han migrado para repoblar áreas a lo largo del corredor. Una serie de avistamientos de tapires en los últimos años da esperanza de que la meta está cerca. Espero que viviré para ver el día en que las dantas vuelvan a poner pie en Hacienda Barú. ■

in Central America. An adult will weigh about 275 kg (600 lb.). The prehensile snout or short trunk is used to grasp vegetation and pull it into its mouth. Known as the “Gardeners of the Rainforest”, tapirs clear small areas in the jungle leaving bare soil where a variety of plants can spring forth and cover the forest floor. Additionally they are great dispersers of seeds.

The dream of the Path of the Tapir is to restore enough natural habitat to deforested lands so that the tapir will return. Much secondary forest has already regenerated in former cattle pastures. Since the initiation of the project, in 1990, three monkey species, pumas, scarlet macaws, and several other species of birds that prefer forest to pasture have migrated along the corridor and repopulated areas where they have been absent for many years. A number of tapir sightings in recent years give hope that the goal is near.

I firmly believe that I will live to see the day when tapirs once again set foot on Hacienda Barú. ■

ou’re driving south on the Coastal Highway and are thoroughly bored with oil palms as far as the eye can see.

Rounding a curve, a wonderful new view opens up not far ahead, mountains covered with rainforest.

Crossing a big bridge is where you enter the Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor. The forested mountain range, called the Coastal Ridge, is the central pathway of the corridor. An observer with an aerial view could follow that ridge up north to the Savegre River, 15 km to the Los Santos Forest Reserve, and down the coastline 80 km to the Sierpe-Terraba mangroves, and the Osa Peninsula; thus, connecting those two large rainforests and a multitude of smaller nature reserves in between. There are tapirs at both ends of the corridor, and there used to be lots of them within its bounds.

The area endured a severe deforestation from the early 1940s to the mid 1980s, and they all perished. The last was killed by a hunter in 1957.

patrones actuales de consumo y producción, tomando en cuenta el aumento de la población, vamos a necesitar tres veces más recursos naturales que en el 2015. Esto es simplemente imposible, ya que sólo tenemos un planeta.

Este tipo de economía ofrece grandes oportunidades para un mayor crecimiento económico, creación de empleo, innovación y sobretodo la reducción de los impactos ambientales y sociales.

Se puede afirmar que es la respuesta más razonable y lógica a una situación de crisis multidimensional, que cuestiona los principios del crecimiento económico basado en el uso intensivo de materia y energía, y que resuelve de mejor manera la grave situación de pérdida de biodiversidad, la generación desmedida de residuos, agotamiento de los recursos naturales y elevada contaminación del aire, el suelo y los océanos, sin olvidar una de sus causas más dañinas: el incremento de la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero y la aceleración de los efectos del cambio climático. ■

Circular economy?

C

ircular economy is synonymous with inclusive business models that are adaptable to the changing reality in which we currently live.

It is necessary to convert the open and linear system of management of resources, goods, and services into a closed and circular system. In the first system, all products end up becoming waste because of its focus on shortterm consumption, requiring natural resources that are increasingly limited. Meanwhile, the circular system aims to ensure that products, their components and resources in general maintain their usefulness and value at all times.

In this way, the circular economy approach implies the transformation of «business as usual» equal to «extraction, production, consumption and waste», into a model in which waste is seen as raw material; thus, maximizing efficiency of the use of natural resources, that is, seeking to reduce the use and extraction of these resources. It is an urgent measure, because if we continue with the current patterns

of consumption and production, taking into account the increase in population, we will need three times more natural resources than in 2015. This is simply impossible, since we only have one planet.

This type of economy offers great opportunities for greater economic growth, job creation, innovation and, above all, the reduction of environmental and social impacts.

It can be said that it is the most reasonable and logical response to a multidimensional crisis situation. That which questions the principles of economic growth based on the intensive use of matter and energy, and that better resolves the serious situation of loss of biodiversity, excessive generation of waste, depletion of natural resources and high pollution of air, soil and oceans, without forgetting one of its most harmful causes: the increase in the emission of greenhouse gases, and the acceleration of the effects of climate change. ■

Por su enfoque al consumo de corto plazo, en el primer sistema todos los productos acaban convirtiéndose en residuos, requiriendo recursos naturales que cada vez son más limitados. En tanto, el sistema circular pretende conseguir que los productos, sus componentes y los recursos en general mantengan su utilidad y valor en todo momento.

l Semana Santa Classic es organizado localmente. Justin Hague, fundador y comisionado del Semana Santa Classic, ha sido anfitrión de este concurso durante 8 años.

Entre la variedad de eventos altamente entretenidos que ocurren en Dominical cada año, es el evento número uno que junta las raíces y la cultura de la comunidad de surf en Dominical.

En esta ocasión fue un concurso abierto a cualquier surfista que quisiera ingresar. Los negocios locales ayudaron a patrocinarlo y las ganancias se destinaron, como ha sido usual, a los Guardavidas de Costa Ballena. Fue un evento para compartir en vacaciones el último fin de semana del verano costarricense.

Las familias locales y los visitantes colocaron carpas a la sombra y barbacoas en la playa, mientras que sonaba la música reggae de los DJs manteniendo las vibraciones. Las olas grandes, típicas de Semana Santa, generaron mucha emoción en el agua y en la playa para participantes y espectadores.

Atraídos por el premio en efectivo y el ambiente relajado del concurso, muchos de los mejores surfistas de Costa Rica se unieron a la diversión. Así los surfistas locales compitieron con los mejores profesionales de Costa Rica poniendo a prueba sus habilidades.

También hubo categorías para “solo locales”, Mujeres, Groms y Masters. Carlos Muñoz de Costa Rica barrió la categoría abierta recordándonos de qué se trata el surf a nivel profesional. Muchos lugareños también participaron. Ethen Hollander brilló al ganar la categoría local contra los mejores de Dominical.

ustin Hague, founder and commissioner of the locally organized Semana Santa Classic, has hosted this contest for 8 years with the beneficiaries always being the local lifeguards.

Of the many highly entertaining events that occur in Dominical annually, the Semana Santa Classic is the one contest that unites the roots and culture of Dominical’s surf community.

In this occasion, any surfer who wanted to participate was welcome. Local business helped in sponsoring the contest with the proceeds going to the Costa Ballena Life Guards. It’s a “feel good” event on the last holiday weekend of the Costa Rican summer. Local families and visitors set up shade tents and BBQs beach-side while local DJs play reggae keeping the vibes high. Seemingly typical of Semana Santa, the waves were again big creating a lot of excitement in the water and on the beach for the participants as well as spectators.

Attracted by the cash prize and the laid- back contest feel, many of Costa Rica’s top surfers also come out to join the fun.

Here, local surfers are matched up against Costa Rica’s top pros putting their skills to the test. There are also categories for “Locals only”, Women, Groms, and Masters.

Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz swept the open category reminding us what pro-level surfing is all about. Many locals were also ripping. Ethen Hollander shined winning the locals category against some of Dominical’s best. Anita from the Gluten Free bakery sows her different crops, produces her flours and bakes the delicious cakes, breads, cinnamon rolls and cookies.

Gina, together with her family, hold goats on their farm, which looks like a story book for children. She brings us fresh milk (milked that same Friday), yogurt and goat cheese.

Listen to Elena from Finca Integral Orgánica Los Gansos, explaining the difference between the production of their chickens and organic eggs compared to conventional ones, as she helps them understand the difference in health when consuming them.

In addition to our fresh products, we have a wide variety of Arte-Sans, designers, artists, chocolatiers, fermentors, holistic therapists, and musicians, who create a range of colors, sounds, textures and flavors, making the Eco Feria a place where you really love to go.

Received Certification by ISLA in Guanacaste

T

welve lifeguards, from the Costa Ballena Lifeguard Association, recently attended a very special training and certification process at the W Hotel and Playa Conchal in Guanacaste from March 22-25, 2019. The training was run by ISLA (International Surf Lifesaving Association) and was the first event of its kind in Costa Rica. The goal of the event was to train and certify participants in Open Water Rescue via a series of competitive open water swimming events and rescue simulations. There were 85 participants in the program, representing communities from all over Costa Rica and Nicaragua. It was great to be able to meet and train with other water people, all of whom are working toward a common goal – increase the number of rescues in the country.

Todos entraron al agua de forma simultánea, nadando hacia boyas a varias distancias y formaciones, incluido salir a porciones de playa para correr alrededor de banderas en ellas. Con tanta gente en el agua, era fácil enredar los brazos y las piernas o quedar atrapados detrás de nadadores más lentos. Fue muy intenso con un nivel de competitividad alto. Los puntos se ganaron nadando rápido, realizando un rescate de calidad, junto con un examen escrito. Los Guardavidas de Costa Ballena obtuvieron la mayor cantidad de puntos en total.

Everyone entered the water in mass, swimming towards buoys at various distances and formations, including portions of exiting the water and running around flags on the beach.

With so many people in the water, it was easy for arms and legs to get tangled or to get caught behind slower swimmers.

It was very intense and the level of competitiveness was high. Points were earned by swimming fast, performing a quality rescue, along with a written exam. The Costa Ballena Lifeguards earned the highest number of total points overall.

We are lucky to have the best lifeguards in the country.

oce integrantes de la Asociación de Guardavidas de Costa Ballena asistieron del 22 al 25 de marzo de 2019 a un proceso muy especial de capacitación y certificación en el Hotel W y Playa Conchal en Guanacaste. La capacitación fue dirigida por ISLA (International Surf Lifesaving Association) y fue el primer evento de su tipo en Costa Rica.

El objetivo fue capacitar y certificar a los participantes en Open Water Rescue a través de una serie de eventos competitivos de natación en aguas abiertas y simulaciones de rescate. Hubo 85 participantes en el programa, representando a comunidades de toda Costa Rica y Nicaragua. Fue genial reunirse y capacitarse junto a otras personas relacionadas con el agua, todas las cuales están trabajando para lograr un objetivo común: aumentar la cantidad de rescates en su país.

n la Finca de doña Gina Morales y su familia, en los altos de fila costera en el pequeño pueblo de Mollejones de Platanares, conocimos seis de las 60 razas reconocidas de cabras en el mundo. En ella los Morales crían las razas lecheras Saanen, Alpinos, Nubianas, Mancha Americana, Toggenburg y Boer. Para distinguirlas hay que fijarse en el color de cuerpo y cara, extremidades, en el tamaño e inclinación de las orejas, el pelaje y en la presencia de cuernos.

Durante la temporada más seca, las cabras viven en una especie de hotel con varios dormitorios y áreas donde los más pequeños pueden jugar y los adultos ejercer sus brincos y frotar sus cuernos. Comen todo el día pasto y un manjar para ellas son los bananos verdes; se nota que están felices.

Sus dueños les han puesto nombres a casi todas y enfatizan que las cabras

son únicamente para la producción de leche. Hay un área separada de ordeño, todo muy limpio y bien ventilado.

Doña Gina hizo su titulación en Quesos y Yogures con el INA: “Siento pasión cuando desarrollo un nuevo producto”.

En la familia todos colaboran con el cuido de los animales. Bajan casi todos los días de la montaña para vender su mercancía: exquisitos quesos frescos, de crema con especies, leche y yogures en las Ferias del Agricultor en Tinamaste, Bahía, San Isidro, Dominical y Uvita.

Nos comentan de los beneficios de la leche de cabra: Tiene un menor contenido en caseína y es una leche hipo-alergénica. Al llegar al intestino grueso ayuda en el desarrollo de la flora probiótica. Gracias a su alto contenido de ácidos grasos esenciales puede disminuir los niveles de colesterol total y triglicéridos, reduce las transaminasas altas (GOT y GPT) y previene enfermedades cardiovasculares.

Es considerada como proteína de buena calidad ya que aporta prácticamente toda la variedad de los aminoácidos esenciales a nuestro organismo (3,3 gramos por 100 gramos de leche).

Siendo una fuente excelente de vitamina D y calcio es ideal para personas con anemia y osteoporosis, ya que la vitamina D es necesaria para la correcta absorción del calcio.

Por otro lado, la leche de cabra es capaz de regenerar la hemoglobina (en caso de anemia). Además aporta buenas cantidades de vitamina A y B2, así mismo minerales como el calcio, potasio y magnesio. El contenido de grasa es un poco mayor que en la leche de vaca, sin embargo, gracias a su gran cantidad de coenzima Q se le atribuyen propiedades anticancerígenas. ■

t the farm of Mrs. Gina Morales and family, at the top of the coastal range in the small village of Mollejones de Platanares, we met six of the 60 recognized breeds of goats in the world. In it the Morales keep the Saanen, Alpine, Nubian, American Spot, Toggenburg and Boer dairy breeds.

To distinguish them, look at the color of body and face, extremities, the size and inclination of the ears, the coat and the presence of horns.

During the driest season of the year, the goats live in a kind of hotel with several bedrooms and areas where the little ones can play and the adults practice their jumps and rub their horns. They eat grass all day and a delicacy for them is green bananas; it shows they are happy. Their owners have named almost all of them and emphasize that the goats are only for milk production. There is a separate milking area, which is very clean and well ventilated.

Mrs. Morales obtained her degree in Cheese and Yogurt with INA (National Learning Institute: «I feel passion when I develop a new product». Everyone in the family collaborates with the care of the animals. They descend almost every day from the mountain to sell their merchandise: exquisite, fresh, cream cheese with spices, and milk and yogurt in the Agricultural Fairs of Tinamaste, Bahia, San Isidro, Dominical, and Uvita.

They tell us about the benefits of goat’s milk: It has a lower content of casein and is a hypo-allergenic milk. When it reaches the large intestine it helps in the development of the probiotic flora. Thanks to its high content of essential fatty acids it can decrease the total cholesterol and triglycerides levels, reduce high transaminases (GOT and GPT), and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Su sabor y gran aporte nutricional le hacen el consentido de muchos.

Manga, mango o manguitos son nombres genéricos que reciben por su tamaño. Introducidos en América por portugueses y españoles, hoy día todos agradecemos tan grande aporte.

Caprichoso y exótico, su cosecha varía de año a año, por lo que algunas veces se brinca un año completo para luego relucir su abundancia, como sucede esta vez cosechando con dobles réditos.

Mango is a fruit of Asian origin that expanded throughout the tropical latitudes including Costa Rica. There are several varieties, including grafted ones. Its flavor and great nutritional contribution make it the favorite of many.

Manga, mango or manguitos are generic names they receive for their size. Introduced in America by the Portuguese and Spaniards, today we all appreciate such a great contribution.

a temporada verde (es decir: la temporada de lluvias) ya comenzó. Para los que vivimos aquí en nuestro pequeño rincón del paraíso, ésta es la mejor temporada del año. Todo es verde y exuberante, el aire es más fresco y los pozos y los ríos se están llenando. Sin embargo, debemos pensar en el hecho de que las carreteras son más resbaladizas, los arroyos y los ríos más altos y los sistemas de drenaje de las cunetas de las carreteras así como las canoas de las casas necesitan limpiarse para evitar futuros problemas.

Lo peor que puede suceder con el vehículo, ya sea automóvil, motocicleta o cuadraciclo, es que empiece a derrapar en una carretera mojada y resbaladiza. Para mitigar esto, debemos asegurarnos de que nuestros neumáticos no estén lisos ni mostrando las cuerdas de acero, además es aconsejable bajar la velocidad. Y por favor, no deje que el aspecto de ese río que está pensando en cruzar lo engañarle. La probabilidad

Lo que es peor, el exceso de velocidad en calles con demasiada agua, podría salpicar al vehículo cercano con gran fuerza, provocando resultados posiblemente mortales. ¡Vamos a disfrutar de la temporada de lluvias, manteniéndonos seguros! ■

Rainy season is upon us…

he green season (read: rainy season) is upon us. To a bunch of us living down here in our little slice of paradise, this is our favorite time of the year. Everything is so green and lush; the air is fresher, and the wells and rivers are filling up. That’s the good news. We must also think about the fact that the roadways are slicker; the creeks and rivers are higher, and drainage systems, from the roadside ditches to house gutters need to be cleaned before further problems may occur.

Maybe not the last thing, but surely very near the last thing you want to happen is for your vehicle, be it a car, motorcycle, or an ATV, to start hydroplaning on a wet, slippery road. To abate that, we must make sure that our tires are not bald showing thread, and keep our speed down. And, please, don’t let the looks of that creek or river you are thinking about riding through be deceiving. Being swept away by the swift

moving current is a very good probability, and surviving that event, not so much.

Throughout the dry season, our house gutters tend to fill up with all sorts of debris. It is best to give them a good cleaning just before the rainy season starts, else we might have some overflowing water that may bring down the gutters, or create standing water (read: mosquito breeding ground).

Overflowing road ditches can have more severe results, with water flowing onto the roadway. Speeding through that seemingly innocuous water, one never knows, there might be a huge pothole underneath, wiping out a vehicle suspension system, or worse; and speeding through the overflowing water, could shoot a spray up onto an upcoming vehicle, the result of which may possibly be deadly.

So, let’s enjoy the rainy season and be safe out there! ■

Luna llena: Hay plena luz, el follaje se pone frondoso. La savia fluye con fuerza por el tronco, las ramas y el follaje. Es un buen momento para cosechar frutos y hortalizas de hoja. ¡No para hacer esquejes!

Cuarto menguante: La luna empieza a disminuir, y todo se mueve hacia abajo. Buen periodo para trasplantar, las raíces se ven potenciadas en esta fase. Es el momento idóneo para sembrar hortalizas de raíz (jengibre, cúrcuma).

Luna nueva: Es la fase de reposo, con muy poco o ninguna luz el crecimiento es muy lento. Se cosechan plantas de raíz y se recomienda hacer labores de mantenimiento como escardar malas hierbas, podar y abonar etc. ¡Buena suerte, jardineros! ■

ith the focus on technology, the importance of lunar phases seems to have fallen into oblivion. However, the moon is a mirror that reflects the sunlight which causes variations in the behavior of the plants. Farmers know that lunar phases influence the movement of plant sap, germination and growth. The magnetism, depending on the distance of the moon from the earth also affects the marine currents.

Only when I myself had the opportunity of planting, I began to give importance to the lunar phases.

For your orientation I am sharing a scheme with you, dear reader, which can help you to plant, harvest and transplant at the right moment in order to have healthier and more resilient plants.

MOON PHASES First quarter: During this period, the light is increasing and

the plants develop their foliage and roots. It is a good time to sow: water rises to the surface and the seeds sprout. If vegetables are planted two days before the crescent, they will germinate earlier and more evenly than at other moments.

Full moon: There is full light, the foliage becomes leafy. The sap flows strongly through the trunk, branches and foliage. It is a good time to harvest fruits and leafy vegetables, but not to make cuttings!

Fourth quarter: The moon begins to diminish, and everything moves down. Good period to transplant, the roots are strengthened in this phase. It is the ideal time to plant root vegetables (ginger, turmeric).

New Moon: It is the resting phase, the growth is very slow due to very little or no light. You can harvest root plants and perform maintenance tasks such as weeding, pruning and fertilizing.

itty City (la Ciudad de los Gatitos) de DAWG es una pequeña aldea y un hogar con aproximadamente 35 residentes. Hasta hace poco, los gatos para la adopción de DAWG estuvieron alojados en tres jaulas pequeñas. Luego seguimos recibiendo más y más gatitos y no había espacio para todos. Con el dinero de los donantes, se construyó Kitty City. Sin embargo, ¡se necesitaba aún más espacio!

Hogares individuales para recién llegados, mamás con bebés y para gatitos enfermos que necesitan ser puestos en cuarentena. Así que ahora tenemos un anexo en Kitty City, donde hay viviendas para aquellos que necesitan atención temporal y especial. ¿No sabe dónde se encuentra Kitty City?

isit DAWG’s Kitty City, a small town and home to about 35 residents. It wasn’t so long ago, when DAWG’s adoptable cats we’re housed in three small cages. Then we kept getting more and more kittens and there wasn’t room for everybody! With money from donors, Kitty City was built.

However, there was a need for even more space! Individual homes for newcomers, mamas with babies, and those who are ill; in other words, those needing to be quarantined. So now we have the Kitty City Quarantine Annex, where there is housing for those who need temporary and special care.

Don’t know where Kitty city is?

It’s in the back yard of Centro Veterinario Costa Ballena, in Uvita, 200 meters south of the gas station.

Currently we have kittens from 2 months old to 3 years old,

orange marmalades, black and white tuxedos, all black Halloween cats, tricolor calicos, tabby’s in all colors, tapestry cats, and an almost all white cat with a black patch over her eye - named “Pirata!”

Visit Kitty City on Adoption Day (every Saturday,) sit in a chair, and see who comes to you. That’s the cat you are looking for, the one brave enough to pat your leg, jump into your lap, and gaze into your eyes, saying, «choose me, adopt me!”

All the kitties for adoption have had their vaccinations and either are neutered or will be when they are old enough.

H

ay muchas razones para celebrar el Día Nacional del Aguacate. Es considerado un súper alimento, siendo una de las bondades del aguacate su alto contenido de ácido oleico. Este ácido graso hidratante ayuda a mantener la piel suave e hidratada, pero también apoya la regeneración de las células dañadas, lo que reduce el enrojecimiento y la irritación.

El aguacate en realidad es una exquisita baya de una sola semilla. Los exploradores españoles en América del Sur la llamaron Aguacate, que era una corrupción de la palabra nahauti (azteca) ahuacati = testículo, llamada así por su forma.

Los antiguos consideraban el aguacate como un símbolo de fertilidad y hoy es un símbolo de amor para muchos.

Dato interesante: la polinización. Las flores del árbol de aguacate se consideran perfectas, ya que tienen órganos reproductores masculinos y femeninos. Sin embargo, los aguacates generalmente no se auto-polinizan, porque las partes masculinas y femeninas no están abiertas al mismo tiempo.

Aunque algunos árboles de aguacate si se auto-polinizan, se obtiene mejores frutos si se polinizan con otra variedad. Por lo tanto, es recomendable plantar dos tipos diferentes a una distancia de al menos 6 metros.

Chicas y Caballos - Year 2

C

hicas y Caballos leaders, Marie and Beth, are very excited about the 2nd year of this special program. In March, they gathered a 4th group of girls from Dominicalito and Dominical. The 5th program will begin in May and will be chosen with help of The Family Support Center of Ojochal. What is Chicas y Caballos about? CyC is an equine-assisted learning program.

It is designed to teach girls how to make good decisions, confidently solve problems and make connections with themselves, with each other, and with the group of gentle horses. The girls are given a variety of fun, yet challenging activities over the course of 4 weeks.

They learn to think for themselves and also to learn the importance of strong communication skills and teamwork. The horses are the teachers and, during the program, the girls are taught the language of the horses and how horse behavior is similar to human behavior.

Horses are incredibly intuitive animals and provide the girls with a safe and beautiful environment in which to learn. It is not a riding program. All activities are performed on the ground. The program meets weekly, for three hours.

At the end of 2018, 2 alumni reunions were held. All previous graduates of the program were invited to come and play at the ranch and make further connections with each other and their beloved horses. These alumni reunions will continue to grow throughout 2019. In expanding upon our ideas from 2018, a graduate from last year joined the team as an intern to assist with the lessons she learned while with CyC. Chicas y Caballos is a volunteer organization that relies on fundraising events and generous donors. as líderes de Chicas y Caballos, Marie y Beth, están muy entusiasmadas con el segundo año de este programa. En marzo, reunieron a un cuarto grupo de niñas de Dominicalito y Dominical. El quinto programa comenzará en mayo y contará con la ayuda del Centro de Apoyo Familiar de Ojochal. ¿De qué se trata Chicas y Caballos? CyC es un programa de aprendizaje asistido por equinos. Está diseñado para enseñar a las niñas a tomar buenas decisiones, resolver problemas con confianza y conectarse con ellas mismas, entre ellas y con el grupo de caballos gentiles. A las niñas se les ofrece una variedad de actividades divertidas y desafiantes a lo largo de cuatro semanas. Aprenden a pensar por sí mismas, también a conocer la importancia de las habilidades de comunicación y el trabajo en equipo. Los caballos son los maestros y durante el programa, a las niñas se les enseña el idioma de los caballos y cómo el comportamiento de los caballos es muy similar al comportamiento humano. Los caballos son animales increíblemente intuitivos y brindan a las niñas un ambiente seguro y hermoso en el que aprender. No es un programa de equitación. Todas las actividades se realizan sobre el terreno. El programa se reúne semanalmente, durante tres horas.

A finales del 2018, se llevaron a cabo dos reuniones de antiguas alumnas. Todas las graduadas anteriores del programa fueron invitadas a jugar en el rancho, hacer mejores conexiones entre ellas y sus queridos caballos. Estas reuniones de ex alumnos continuarán creciendo a lo largo de 2019. Al ampliar nuestras ideas del 2018, una graduada del año pasado se unió al equipo como pasante para ayudar con las lecciones que aprendió mientras estaba con CyC. as publicaciones locales y los medios de comunicación desempeñan un papel clave en las comunidades al ayudarnos a ver y preocuparnos por las cosas que hemos perdido o las que no hemos prestado mucha atención.

Ningún medio de comunicación masivo se tomará el tiempo para informar sobre un incidente local, evento social, apertura de negocios o recaudación de fondos y si publican una historia, no tendrán el conocimiento o el tiempo para entender a las personas involucradas y cómo realmente afecta a la comunidad.

Los grupos de chat locales llevan la conversación aún más lejos, ya que las personas preguntan, responden y comparten sugerencias adicionales, actualizaciones y las tangentes de las conversaciones crean una base de conocimientos dinámica y diversa en tiempo real que ningún archivo o servicio puede igualar en espíritu o energía. Mi esperanza para nuestra comunidad es ver que ese mismo nivel de compromiso se manifieste en lo personal.

ocal publications and media play a key role in communities by helping us to see and care about things we may have missed or not paid much attention to. No mass media is going to take the time to report on a local incident, social event, business opening or fundraiser and, if they do arrive for a story, they won’t have the background or time to understand the people involved and how it truly impacts the community.

Local chat groups take the conversation even further as people ask, answer and share information with additional suggestions, updates, and tangents to the conversations create a dynamic and diverse real-time knowledge base which no archive or service could match in spirit or energy.

My hope for our community is to see that same level of engagement manifest in person.

If just one in ten of us volunteered once a week and businesses contributed 1% of their revenues to community development

and security, we would be the most exciting, safe, and progressive region in Central America. It’s an achievable goal worth considering.

Just think of the possibilities. Public spaces to meet, play and make friends, recreational facilities and cultural events for young and old (classes! theatre! a skatepark!), a renowned hotel-school training locals, lifeguards at the beaches seven days a week, SafeBeach patrols in all the hotspots, and so much more.

This vision is closer than you may think. Many of these projects are in consideration and hotels like Kura Design Villas, Uvita Bali Bosque, Oxygen Jungle Villas, Rancho Pacifico, and Bodhi Surf & Yoga have already signed up for the SOMOS 1% program. Montessori ~ La Casa del Niño

asa del Niño en la zona del Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica, se enorgullece en ofrecer su primer programa de educación Montessori para niños de primaria y niños más pequeños. Este programa educativo intencional se lleva a cabo en un entorno íntimo, realista y hogareño, en el que se anima a los pequeños de 1 a 3 años y niños primarios (edades 3-6) a aprender, crear y desarrollarse. La experiencia de aprendizaje se crea para respaldar las etapas del desarrollo del infante, alentar el compromiso y el descubrimiento de aprendizaje independiente, guiados por sus maestros. Se dice que una de las características más exclusivas de Casa del Niño es su enfoque Montessori auténtico, en el que la Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) establece los estándares. Casa del Niño también tiene una escuela hermana Montessori, la Escuela Montessori Tides, en los Estados Unidos.

En su enfoque único, holístico y centrado en el infante, la educación Montessori enfatiza el desarrollo tanto intelectualmente, emocionalmente, moralmente como conductualmente. El enfoque Montessori no solo fomenta el conocimiento y el compromiso académico, sino que también el pensamiento creativo, alcanzar el máximo potencial y comprender las necesidades de los demás. La educación para la paz es también una parte importante del programa. Se promueve la reconexión a la paz interior, el medio ambiente y los demás, mediante el uso de un "espacio de paz" donde los niños pueden experimentar calma e incluso meditar.

he Southern Pacific Zone of Costa Rica is proud to offer its first Montessori education program, Casa del Nino, for primary and toddler age children. This intentional educational program takes place in an intimate, downto-earth, home-like setting in which toddlers (ages 1-3) and primary children (ages 3-6) are encouraged to learn, create, and develop. The learning experience is created to support the stages of child development and encourage independent learning engagement and discovery as guided by their teachers. One of the most unique features of Casa del Nino is said to be its authentic Montessori approach in which standards are set forth by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI).

Casa del Nino also has a Montessori sister school, Montessori Tides School, in the United States.

In its unique, holistic, child-centered approach, Montessori education emphasizes the development of children intellectually, emotionally, morally, and behaviorally. The Montessori approach not only encourages knowledge and academic engagement but it encourages creative thinking, reaching one’s full potential, and understanding the needs of others. Peace education is also an important feature of the program. Reconnecting to one’s inner peace, the environment, and others, is encouraged through the use of a “peace space” where children can experience calmness and even meditate.

When children feel valued, and are more aware of themselves and others, they can better understand and purposefully contribute to their communities and global world.

EL TOUR Debido a factores tales como el desarrollo, la agricultura no sostenible y la falta de conciencia, la destrucción de los manglares en todo el mundo se está convirtiendo en un problema ecológico y fuente de pérdidas económicas.

Sin embargo, en Sierpe, muchas empresas de negocios y de turismo ecológico ofrecen oportunidades para explorar los ahora protegidos manglares de Térraba-Sierpe.

he mangrove forest and its massive maze and the intertwining of trees and roots is considered to be a critical component acting to subdue tidal surge, reduce erosion, provide opportunities for recreation and serve as nurseries for fisheries. These incredible plants with their gnarly roots have evolved to survive in spite of low oxygen content in salty water.

The unique ecosystem found in the intricate mesh of mangrove roots creates a healthy respite for organisms like algae, barnacles, shellfish, sponges, and mangrove crabs all of which begin their life in the mangrove forest.

The mangroves provide nourishment and protection to these fisheries and also a place to grow to a size that will enable them to compete with other sea creatures.

Not only is the mangrove forest conducive to the continuation and development of sea life, the Terraba – Sierpe Mangrove Forest attracts and is home to a multitude of birds, mammals and reptiles.

huellas demostraron la presencia de Ocelotes en Ojochal e incluso de felinos más grandes, como el puma o la pantera.

Hemos tenido algunas observaciones que nos demuestran que la noche está llena de vida aquí. Tan pronto como escuchamos pequeños gritos, crujidos y pasos en las hojas, tenemos curiosidad por saber su origen.

A la fecha se han logrado grabar guatusas, mapaches, pizotes, urubúes, mofetas, monos y zarigüeyas, los cuales complementan la observación de una amplia variedad de aves y plantas.

Lejos de una afición esta idea tiene un claro propósito que es su aporte a la educación ambiental, ya que hemos sido testigos y partícipes de los esfuerzos comunales de conservación y protección del medio, las limpiezas de playa, la lucha contra la extracción furtiva de huevos de tortuga y la cacería ilegal de animales salvajes. Pensamos en las generaciones futuras y esperamos que también tengan la oportunidad de vivir tales encuentros. ■

Como amantes de la vida silvestre y la tecnología, iniciamos este verano a nivel científico los proyectos de monitoreo biológico para la Reserva Playa Tortuga, en la misma modalidad de cámaras trampa nocturnas.

Nights in Ojochal are Full of Life!

T

he love of nature and tranquility was the motivation for which Alain Guay and Jocelyne Giroux, decided to live in the Tropics, near the South Pacific of Costa Rica.

A publication in Facebook, made by the author, stunned the residents of Ojochal. The reason for the evident astonishment was not for less. On a summer night, my infrared camera captured a family of vigorous Ocelots. Interactions, surprise messages and "likes" filled the publication. Many were unaware that species of wild cats could be so close to their own homes.

As lovers of wildlife and technology, we began this summer using the biological monitoring projects at a scientific level for the Playa Tortuga Reserve, in the same modality as night trap cameras.

Yes, Costa Rica is known for its abundant biodiversity, but not many neighbors of Ojochal would imagine that they could share their garden with a wild cat, which could be a jaguar or a puma. In the past, many testimonies of neighbors, along

with animal footprints, showed the presence of Ocelots in Ojochal and even larger cats, such as the puma or the panther.

We have had some sightings that reveal to us that the night is full of life here. As soon as we hear small cries, crunches and footsteps in the leaves, we are curious to know their origin.

To date, guatusas, raccoons, coatis, urubus, skunks, monkeys and opossums have been recorded, which complement the observation of a wide variety of birds and plants.

Far from a hobby, this idea has a clear purpose which is the contribution to environmental education. We have been witnesses and participants in the communal efforts of conservation and protection of the environment, beach cleanups, the fight against the furtive extraction of turtle eggs, and the illegal hunting of wild animals. We are thinking about future generations and hope that they will also have the opportunity to live such encounters. ■

bservar una manada de saínos corriendo en la jungla, escuchar la algarabía de las rojizas guacamayas, mirar dantas chapuceando en la ribera de los ríos y riachuelos, monos cariblancos emulando nidos de oropéndolas entre la cúpula de los árboles o el movimiento del oso hormiguero extrayendo entre troncos su apetitoso manjar de hormigas, es una cotidiana escena que se disfruta con las pupilas dilatadas en las entrañas del Parque Nacional Corcovado en el Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica.

Por su biodiversidad este zoológico sin paredes es un manjar para estudiosos de la naturaleza, procedentes de los cinco continentes. Concentra en una extensión de 42.560 hectáreas el 2.5 por ciento de la flora y fauna del planeta.

Turistas y estudiosos disfrutan de un mundo salvaje. En esta región tropical, la sombra de los corpulentos y centenarios árboles se amalgama con la fresca brisa marina para ofrecer un cálido recorrido por el corazón de la selva de Costa Rica.

seguridad incluyendo los flotadores sobre el pecho de los navegantes.

Además de ser ordenados y diestros marineros, los “baqueanos” demuestran habilidades con las lenguas inglesa, francesa y teutónica para inducir a los recién llegados en el mundo salvaje y exótico. ingresando al parque se percibe la cordialidad de los “ticos”. Los guardianes de la naturaleza, uniformados de caqui y sombrero de ala ancha, responden amigablemente tras el icónico enunciado de los costarricenses: “Pura Vida”.

A cada paso, los sedientos turistas disfrutan mágicas e inolvidables vivencias. Entre la maleza se meneaban sin inmutarse, tepezcuintes, pizotes, águilas, faisanes, perezosos, mapaches, tucanes y más de 25 tipos de aves silvestres.

El ropaje verde y exuberante del Parque Corcovado, es el mismo que impresionó al corsario y pirata inglés Francis Drake en el siglo 16. Según las leyendas, tesoros acumulados por estos marineros ingleses, se encuentran bajo las tierras areniscas de la península de Osa. ¡Atrévase a cruzar esta frontera salvaje! ■

bserve a herd of peccaries running in the jungle, listen to the cacophony of the reddish macaws, watch tapirs botching on the banks of rivers and streams, white-faced monkeys emulating oriole nests (emulating oriole nests?) between the dome of the trees, or the movement of the anteater extracting its appetizing delicacy of ants from the trunks.

This is a daily scene that can be enjoyed with dilated pupils in the bowels of the Corcovado National Park in the South Pacific of Costa Rica.

Due to its biodiversity, this fenceless zoo is a delicacy for nature scholars from five continents. It concentrates 2.5 percent of the flora and fauna of the planet on an extension of 42.560 hectares.

Tourists and scholars enjoy the wild world. In this tropical region, the shade of the corpulent and centennial trees is amalgamated with the fresh sea breeze inviting a journey through the heart of the Costa Rican jungle.

the floats on the navigators’ chests.

At each step, the eager tourists live magical and unforgettable experiences. Among the undergrowth, tepezcuintes, coatis, eagles, pheasants, sloths, raccoons, toucans and more than 25 types of wild birds bob without flinching,.

The green and exuberant landscape of the Corcovado Park, in the 16th century, impressed the English pirate and corsair Francis Drake. According to legend, treasures accumulated by these English sailors, are hidden under the sandstones of the Osa Peninsula.
