Welcome From the Co-Chairs
We are delighted to welcome you all to our annual BFAMI Gala. This evening celebrates not only our magnificent achievements but also marks the end of a year-long celebration of 70 years of BFAMI. We thank you for the part you have played in our successes. We are extremely grateful to Nathalie Zaquin-Boulakia and the team at Phillips for their guidance, expertise and sponsorship of the gala. Our gratitude also goes to The Dorchester and 45 Park Lane, we are thrilled to be able to hold our event at this iconic London venue. It is of course only through the incredible generosity and continued support of all the artists and galleries that this magnificent evening is possible. This year we are delighted to honour Alex Israel. Los Angeles based, Israel’s work explores popular media, Hollywood and the cult of celebrity culture. His work has been the subject of many solo exhibitions and is included in numerous museum collections worldwide including: MoMA, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Centre Pompidou, Paris and is owned by leading collectors world-wide. We are very grateful to Gagosian Gallery for their generosity. Over the last year BFAMI has been immensely proud to have been able to fund educational projects at twelve of Israel’s most celebrated museums. Our continued support allows the museums to offer exceptional programmes which enhance Israeli society and culture.

Through making art accessible to all, we reach out to all sectors of society; uniting and engaging the most disadvantaged communities. Projects supported by BFAMI include mobile shows visiting needy schools on the periphery thereby encouraging young children and their families to engage with art and to discover Israel’s cultural background; schemes that motivate co-existence by uniting Jewish and Arab students through creative collaboration; workshops which broaden museum audiences by training non-Hebrew speaking members of staff. Funding provided by BFAMI enables the museums to offer free of charge activities to the population of Israel’s most disadvantaged areas. The work of BFAMI is essential in safeguarding and providing these invaluable interactions. We couldn’t do this without the essential support of Sothebys and Christies our long-standing partners.
are doing a fantastic job leading our Young BFAMI group with incredible energy and enthusiasm. On behalf of the entire BFAMI community a huge thanks to Michelle Hyman and Gili Yuval who work tirelessly throughout the year ensuring our day to day activities are managed to perfection. Finally, we would like to thank you all for your continuous participation and generous support of the museums. We wish you an enjoyable evening!

A Letter from the Israel Museum, Jerusalem
It is my great pleasure to send greetings to you on the occasion of the annual Gala of our British Friends. First and foremost, I am delighted to announce the recent appointment by the Board of Directors of Professor Ido Bruno as the new Director of the Israel Museum. Ido, who lives and works in Jerusalem, is one of Israel’s most eminent designers, industrial design teachers, and a leading cultural figure. I am confident that Ido brings with him the experience, values, vision, and vitality necessary to lead the Museum into the future. 2017 also saw several other changes in the Museum at the senior management level, particularly the completion at the end of 2016 of the 20-year tenure of James Snyder as Director. Under James’s exemplary management, the Museum experienced significant growth and expansion in all areas of its work. Of special note was his spearheading of the Museum’s comprehensive three-year Renewal Project. From January 2017, James became Director Emeritus, also taking upon himself a new role as International President of the International Council working for AFIM and with the Museum’s extensive international network of Friends. Our 2017 exhibition program once again presented outstanding exhibitions which drew large and appreciative audiences. Of particular note were Ai Weiwei: Maybe, Maybe Not, displaying for the first time major works by one of the most influential and esteemed members of the international contemporary art scene; and Jerusalem in Detail, inspired by the life’s work of David Kroyanker, the foremost chronicler of Jerusalem architecture, focusing on the myriad design
motifs hidden in Jerusalem’s streets and buildings. Jerusalem in Detail also pays tribute to the Museum’s Founding Father Teddy Kollek – that legendary mayor of Jerusalem – on the tenth anniversary of his passing. We were proud to welcome to the Museum in 2017 many important visitors. In May, we were honored to welcome President Donald Trump – being the third consecutive U.S. President to visit the Israel Museum in the past decade – who chose the Israel Museum as the venue to deliver his keynote speech. In July, we welcomed the Prime Minister of India, H.E. Narendra Modi, accompanied by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during his historic visit to Israel; and in August, we hosted UN Secretary-General António Guterres. We are deeply grateful to all of our friends throughout the world for their ongoing support and devotion which makes possible everything we do in the Museum. On this Gala evening, it is a special privilege to express our gratitude for the sustained commitment of our British Friends, under the inspired leadership of its Co-Chairs Pamela Crystal and Poju Zabludowicz.

A letter from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art
Dear Friends, Once again, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the annual BFAMI Gala and Benefit Auction, and express my gratitude for your dedicated support, which is vital and much appreciated by all of us. The past year has brought much excitement with the opening of the greatly anticipated Louise Bourgeois exhibition, Twosome, the first comprehensive overview of the artist’s work in Israel, with a record 50,000 visitors in two months only! This year, visitors to the Museum enjoyed a broad array of changing exhibitions by leading Israeli and international contemporary artists working in various media. Among the exhibitions were: Regarding Africa: Contemporary Art and Afro-Futurism, which weaved in various narratives and perspectives challenging traditional representations; 3.5 Square Meters: Constructive Responses to Natural Disasters examined current and future responses to natural disasters; Red over Yellow reflected the unique taste and passion of a private collector through a wide selection of works; and an exhibition by Fatma Shanan, the 2016 winner of the Haim Shiff Prize for Figurative-Realist Art. In addition, this year was the first time the Museum’s curators collaboratively mounted the exhibition Collective, featuring works from the collections, many of which had never been shown before. As the world commemorates the centennial of the 1917 Russian Revolution, the Museum presents Total Red: Soviet Photography, an exhibition which follows the development of Soviet photography against the backdrop of the revolution.
Paralleling the exhibitions on view, we offer a rich program of lectures, concerts, musical performances, film screenings and festivals. In addition, we are proud of the Young Friends program which is in its third year and continues to attract new members who enjoy exclusive events in the Museum and throughout the city, from special exhibition views to artist studio visits. We celebrated Purim with a colorful evening of festivities, Taboo: Forbidden Night at the Museum, and continuing our collaboration with the radio station Teder. FM, we hosted leading musicians as well as a series of lectures, interactive exhibitions and performances. As always, we acknowledge with deep gratitude BFAMI’s continued generous support of the Museum’s diverse educational programs, especially the interactive Exhibitions for the Whole Family. In keeping with Israel’s warm Mediterranean climate, the current show, In the Sea, presents works centered on the painterly space of sea and water, depicted by a range of artists and media. It is accompanied by special sea-themed and kinetic sand activities. I would like to express my deep appreciation and thanks to BFAMI and its dedicated members, and to extend a personal invitation to each of you to visit the Museum in the near future. Wishing you a great and art-filled 2018. Yours sincerely, Suzanne Landau Director, Tel Aviv Museum of Art

Cultural Programme
This year we were delighted to be able to arrange two very special trips in the spring and autumn. In April thirty-five participants travelled to Israel to visit the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and many other museums that we support around the country. It was an opportunity to meet the outstanding curators and educational specialists who create the ground-breaking programmes we underwrite. In addition, we were graciously hosted by collectors and artists, viewing new exhibitions, private collections and artist’s studios. BFAMI with the help of Dorotheum, our Luncheon sponsor, arranged an amazing cultural trip to Vienna in November. Showcasing the best of Vienna’s historical sights, as well as its contemporary art scene, we had the opportunity to visit leading museums, Secession masterpieces, private collections, Vienna Art Week, and the deeply moving Holocaust Memorial by Rachel Whiteread. The highlight was a private concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra followed by a Gala Dinner hosted by Dorotheum in their magnificent palace. During the year we arranged an exciting and stimulating programme of special events in London. In February, Pace invited us to a private tour of the soldout exhibition, Transcending Boundaries, by TeamLab, an interdisciplinary group of ultra-technologists whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, technology, design and the natural world.
Members came together in June to attend a performance of Remnants at the Print Room, a new theatrical music piece by Patrick Eakin Young, featuring gripping vocals, electronic music and dance, which was followed by a short talk. In September, Isaac Julien led us on a tour of his studio and a screening of his acclaimed film Ten Thousand Waves. This was followed by a Q &A moderated by Maïa Morgensztern. We were invited in October to a private lunch in the beautiful boardroom of Sotheby’s hosted by Senior Jewellery Specialist Daniela Mascetti where we were privileged to view and handle Magnificent and Noble Jewels. Later in the month, we had breakfast and a private view at the Italian Cultural Institute of an exhibition curated by Artuner of the works of the Italian post-war sculptor Pietro Consagra alongside new collages by French artist Marine Hugonnier. To round off the year, we visited the stunning home of Freda and Izak Uziyel to view The Theatre of Self, where we enjoyed a lavish light supper and the works of David Czuprun and Katja Seib. As you see, our trips and events are very varied and if you would like to join us on our explorations of the art world please contact the BFAMI office.

Women in Art Lunch 2018
Dear Friends, For the last 17 years Women in Art (WIA) has grown and grown into the well established Art Lunch of the summer. The list of significant artists we have honoured has been unsurpassed in celebrating the enormous contribution that women bring as a whole to the burgeoning art scene. In true WIA style our Woman in Art for 2018 is Marina Abramović, a true art superstar of our times. Her performances have been described as both dramatic and dangerous and by making her own body a medium she has avoided traditional, object-based art materials and cut down the distance between the artist and the audience. The Lunch will take place on June 26th 2018 at The Dorchester where Marina will be in conversation with Tim Marlow Artistic Director of the Royal Academy. To hear them in conversation (without having to sit in silence!) is a truly unique opportunity within the contemporary art calendar. I am delighted that Dorotheum Auction House will once again be our headline sponsor and I am thrilled to continue our relationship with Martina Batovic and her team. I look forward to welcoming you to Women in Art 2018 on the 26th June. Warmest wishes
Francine Peters
