at the Secession in Vienna. The present work, The Money Pit, assumes da Corte’s signature use of colour, form and cultural referencing to convey his individual artistic enquiry on a two-dimensional plane. The title of the present work echoes that of the 1986 Richard Benjamin flm The Money Pit, featuring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, whereby a successful couple buy a lavish house for a cut price. Manipulating the aesthetic of the Nike brand and drawing visual reference to The Simpsons, a dollar bill and a foppy disk, da Corte’s work channels the essence of consumer culture, technology and Pop. Appearing polished and highly aesthetic, glitter spills across the picture plane, while a succulent combination of orange and blue illuminates the backdrop for the meticulously placed objects. Prompting the viewer to examine our individual relationship to objects, da Corte taps into deeply personal, nostalgic narratives and familial memories, ofering a psychological reading of his enigmatic work.

Executed in 1991, following Sigmar Polke’s extensive and experimental exploration of colour throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, Untitled is exemplary of the artist’s mastery of alchemy and his extraordinary and energetic innovation. The gyrating form, an arabesque-like whirl of paint, is fused with subtle changes in tonality, inviting the viewer into the artist’s hallucinogenic universe. Completed fve years afer Athanor, the artist’s ground-breaking project for the Pavilion of the Federal Republic of Germany during the Venice Biennale of 1986, the present work highlights Polke’s concern with deconstructing imagery and opening new realms of interpretation. Harnessing the artist’s alchemic experimentations, the present work expertly synthesises Polke’s preoccupation with innovative forms and materials with the subtlety of tone.

Repainting oil on canvas 282 x 400 cm (111 x 157 1/2 in.) Painted in 2011. Estimate £70,000-90,000 $92,100-118,000 €79,400-102,000 ♠ Provenance All Visual Arts, London Galerie Michael Haas, Berlin Acquired from the above by the present owner in 2011 Exhibited London, All Visual Arts, Jonathan Wateridge, Mittelland, 13 October - 12 November 2011, pp. 28-31, 40-41, 50 (illustrated)

In mimetically capturing a mundane scene of invented reality, Repainting, from Jonathan Wateridge’s Mittelland series, encapsulates the artist’s ability to interrogate perception, rendering the image strikingly realistic yet devoid of the intrusive details of photography. A single light source illuminates the room, invoking the chiaroscuro of Old Master paintings whilst refecting artifcial studio lighting. The viewer hovers between the realism of the painted scene and its obviously constructed nature. Drawing attention to the artifce of image-making, Wateridge choreographs scenes before capturing them as the basis for his painterly compositions. Considering painting a more complex medium for capturing the ‘now’, Wateridge lifs elements from cinema and photography to create his own constructed representations of life, or, as Wateridge has termed his practive, a form of ‘fauxdocumentary’. Repainting plants a seed of doubt within the viewer as to how one ought to perceive a picture. In doing so Wateridge reinvigorates the medium of painting.

‘I merely wanted a sense that their whole life, everything that they’re doing is somehow in fux and also what questions that raises given the age they’re at. If this had been a young couple, in their twenties, perhaps the image would seem utopian, it could be aspirational, but this does something else’. Jonathan Wateridge

‘The point was always to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, and come up with a likeness that was recognizable but that existed in a “world that never was”, a sort of lusty yet ethereal limbo where everyone was a star, not only for ffteen minutes, but, in this incarnation caught permanently on canvas, “forever”, as in “Diamonds are forever”’. Juicer). Placed purposefully on a sleek Formica and wooden shelf, rigorously designed with an acute attention to every last millimetre, a lamp and juicer are exhibited, stripped bare of their quotidian function and transported into an interrogative art world context. Designed by Philippe Starck, the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer has become visually iconic; with its futuristic alien legs and sleek pellet-like body, this object has become a kitchen implement with ‘aspirational desirability’ (Michael Czerwinski in Kate Watson-Smyth, ‘The Secret History Of: Philippe Starck’s lemon squeezer’, The Independent, 13 May 2010, online). Another design classic, Jasper Morrison’s Glo-Ball light sits orb-like, nestled beside its slender neighbour, celestial in its emanating glow. Interested in the relationship of objects to conceptual art, Steinbach’s intentional placement of everyday implements explore our personal connections with physical objects, questioning how they create a visual syntax between the individual and collective audience.

‘This picture is dedicated to the world-famous sculpture of Robert Indiana “LOVE”. Also this composition refers to the creative series “HumanAlien”, which includes sculptures and paintings and performances. In one of the paintings on this theme “All for VITA’ I stylized the letters of the Latin alphabet into multi-fgures compositions. The letters took on a symbolic form. In the painting “LOVE” I used the letters from the picture “All for VITA”. This magic word is at the peak of relevance for us. Perhaps as relevant as it was for America during the Vietnam War. These were the times of hippies and active social position in the struggle for peace throughout the world. Our country is currently experiencing similar social metamorphosis. This positive magic spell is understandable in all corners of the planet.’ - Roman Minin.

Only the most vivid and exaggerated features have the right to be embodied in the image. Nothing superfuous. This is the main rule. The image of my hero is the quintessence of the famous character of the movie Alien and the image of the miner from my pictures. I put these two images together in one and was born a new character, which more relevant today in Ukraine. It’s like a scientifc experiment with mutations of the mentality of society. An unbelievable project. Allegorical image born of time. During the last three years, the process of dividing society into one’s own and others’ ones is under way. A system of markers is being developed to understand who is who. I propose my result on the actual imagination.’ - Roman Minin.

UK Guide for Prospective Buyers Each Phillips auction is governed by the applicable Conditions of Sale and Authorship Warranty. All prospective bidders should read these sections carefully. They govern the purchasing agreement under which you buy at auction from Phillips. They may be also amended by saleroom addendum or auctioneer’s announcement during the auction. The complete Conditions of Sale and Authorship Warranty applicable to this auction (Version 9/12/17) are found online at phillips.com, along with detailed information on each lot. Estimates The auction estimates indicated for each lot in this catalogue do not include Buyer’s Premium (applicable on each lot), or VAT or Artist’s Resale Right (where such charges apply). Details of these charges are given below. All Lots are Subject to ‘Buyer’s Premium’ In addition to the hammer (final bid) price, a buyer’s premium is due from all successful buyers. The buyer’s premium is a commission based on the hammer price payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price at the following rates: 25% of the hammer price up to and including £180,000; 20% of the portion of the hammer price above £180,000 up to and including £3,000,000; and 12.5% of the portion of the hammer price above £3,000,000. Condition and Condition Reports Phillips does not warrant or guarantee condition on any lot. Solely as a convenience to clients, Phillips may provide condition reports on many lots, which are also available online on the lot detail pages. If there is not a condition report available, that is not a representation that a lot is in perfect condition. While condition reports are prepared honestly and carefully, our staff are not professional restorers or trained conservators. We therefore encourage all prospective buyers to inspect all lots at our pre-sale exhibitions, and contact our staff with any questions. Bidding at Auction You may bid in the auction in person, online, on the phone, or by placing an advance bid. The easiest way to register to bid is to go to our homepage at phillips.com, and Sign Up or Log In. When you want to register for an auction, click Register under Buy & Sell or on our sale pages. We recommend registering at least 24 hours prior to each sale to ensure you can bid. Good luck! Some lots are sold under special conditions. Phillips uses the following symbols to designate these lots: O ◊ Guaranteed Property The seller of lots designated with the symbol O has been guaranteed a minimum price fnanced solely by Phillips. Where the guarantee is provided by a third party or jointly by us and a third party, the property will be denoted with the symbols O ◊. When a third party has fnanced all or part of our fnancial interest in a lot, it assumes all or part of the risk that the lot will not be sold and will be remunerated via a fxed fee, a percentage of the hammer price or the buyer’s premium or some combination of the foregoing. The third party may bid on the

UK_NEW NOW_DEC17_118-175.indd 172

guaranteed lot during the auction. If the third party is the successful bidder, the remuneration may be netted against the purchase price. Where Phillips has guaranteed a minimum price on every lot in the catalogue, Phillips will not designate each lot with the symbol(s) for the guaranteed property but will state our fnancial interest at the front of the catalogue. ∆ Property in Which Phillips Has an Ownership Interest Lots with this symbol indicate that Phillips owns the lot in whole or in part or has an economic interest in the lot equivalent to an ownership interest. •No Reserve Unless indicated by a •, all lots in this catalogue are offered subject to a reserve. A reserve is the confidential value established between Phillips and the seller and below which a lot may not be sold. The reserve for each lot will not exceed the low pre-sale estimate. ♠ Property Subject to the Artist’s Resale Right Lots marked with ♠ are subject to the Artist’s Resale Right calculated as a percentage of the hammer price (in EUR) and payable as part of the purchase price as follows: Royalty Rate: From 0 to 50,000 (4%) From 50,000.01 to 200,000 (3%) From 200,000.01 to 350,000 (1%) From 350,000.01 to 500,000 (0.5%) Exceeding 500,000 (0.25%) The Artist’s Resale Right applies where the hammer price is EUR 1,000 or more, subject to a maximum royalty per lot of EUR 12,500. Calculation of the Artist’s Resale Right will be based on the pounds sterling/euro reference exchange rate quoted on the date of the sale by the European Central Bank. †, §, ‡, or Ω Property Subject to VAT Where there is no VAT symbol, Phillips is able to use the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme and VAT will not normally be charged on the hammer price. An amount equivalent to VAT at 20% on the buyer’s premium will be included in the buyer’s premium. Property with a † symbol will be sold under normal UK VAT rules, and VAT will normally be charged at 20% on both the hammer price and buyer’s premium. Property with a § symbol and sold to buyers whose registered address is in the EU will be assumed to be remaining in the EU and will be treated as having no symbol (unless informed otherwise by a buyer). Property sold with a ‡ (5%) or Ω (20%) symbol has been imported from outside the EU to be sold at auction under temporary admission, and offered under the Auctioneer’s Margin Scheme at the respective % on the hammer price and an amount in lieu of VAT at 20% on the buyer’s premium. The foregoing is for summary purposes only. Please go to phillips.com/buy and specifically the VAT Guide, ‘VAT AND OTHER TAX INFORMATION FOR BUYERS’ for a more detailed description of the VAT symbols used in this Buyer’s Guide, as well as any VAT refunds that you may be qualified to receive.
