SNOW VACANCY: New Kensington’s Sandy Salzman fears that without funding, the neighborhood’s vacant lots will look like this one, at Frankford Avenue and Letterly Street. NEAL SANTOS

UNDERCUT AND OVERGROWN Unless the city coughs up soon, thousands of vacant lots may go to seed this year. By Anthony Campisi
T
o understand the difference an abandoned lot can make in its neighborhood, look no further than the 1900 block of East Cumberland Street in Kensington. At one end is the vacant lot at Jasper and Cumberland, where the body of Nicole Piacentini, the second of three victims believed to have been killed by the “Kensington Strangler,” was found. Since the horrific murder, community members have spruced up the site a bit. Before that it was a mess of garbage and high weeds which — tragically — blocked its interior from view. On the other end of the block is another lot. This one, however, is landscaped and free of trash, with a few trees to give it character. That’s the stark contrast Sandy Salzman, executive director of the New Kensington Community Development Corp. (NKCDC), draws when talking about the importance of the Community LandCare program, a city-funded initiative that paid for neighborhood groups to clean up and maintain vacant lots throughout Philadelphia. The program was cut this summer, and unless that funding is restored, Saltzman fears that some 2,600 vacant lots will soon look just like the one at Jasper Street. Already, hers and other community
groups have laid off or soon will lay off dozens of workers responsible for maintaining these spaces. And while the city dangles the possibility that something is in the pipeline to replace that service, it looks like the thousands of lots will remain in limbo at least another year. The Community LandCare program began with a simple idea: It’s hard to spark an economic revitalization in a neighborhood full of trash-strewn dead zones with waist-high weeds. As Salzman puts it: “Who wants to move into a neighborhood that’s scary?” And so, in 1995, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), using a grant from the William Penn Foundation, paid NKCDC to clean key parcels of vacant land in its neighborhood. Under former Mayor John Street, the program got city funding, and expanded to other neighborhoods: By 2010, 15 community groups were cleaning about 2,600 lots throughout the city. The immediate results — at least in terms of redevelopment — were often small, but they added up. Statistics from a companion vacant-lot cleanup program run by PHS using for-profit contractors are illustrative: About 10 percent of the parcels enrolled in that program over the years have been developed, and 250 were developed last year alone. Moreover, a PHS-commissioned study found that properties adjacent to lots maintained under that program had property values 37 percent higher than properties abutting blighted lots. The maintenance also gave neighborhoods a sense of comfort and care. Salzman credits the Community LandCare program with helping spark a renaissance in the neighborhood NKCDC serves, including

✚ ICE, BABY Before 200 activists blocked traffic on Broad Street this Monday to protest the recent deportation of local Cambodian refugees, they sat quietly at the Arch Street United Methodist Church, watching a makeshift play by a few Central High School students. The story revolves around Jimmy, a refugee who is caught brawling on the street as a teenager. Police charge him with an aggravated felony, and he goes to jail. After Jimmy is released, however, he becomes a shining example of how ex-cons can turn their lives around. Years later, Jimmy, a permanent resident, applies for citizenship — and is denied. But that’s the least of his troubles: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials tell Jimmy he’s now being deported, thanks to a 1996 law that made deportation mandatory for any immigrant who commits an aggravated felony. “I see you are a reformed man, but because of this law, we cannot do anything,” says the ICE official. “Are you serious?” asks Jimmy. “Please don’t take me away! My daughter, my son!” “It’s a law,” says the ICE official. “Sorry.” It may seem unbelievable, but the skit is actually based on the lives of very real Cambodian refugees from Philly who face deportation because of crimes they committed years — even decades — ago, and who are now incarcerated at a York County detention facility. And so, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, activists marched to ICE’s headquarters, at 16th and Callowhill streets, to demand the release of four local Cambodian refugees awaiting deportation. ICE workers were off for the holiday, so activists left a few parting gifts: hundreds of yellow ribbons tied to the outside fence.
Will ICE meet their demands — or meet with them at all? Privately, several group members were doubtful. But Monday’s protest marked one victory. Having long felt their plight is largely ignored by mainstream media, the protesters were surprised — and delighted — to find the Inquirer and Daily News suddenly in tow. “They here! They here!” shouted marchers. Indeed: The protest made the Inquirer’s Local News section front. —Holly Otterbein
✚ THE ED IS DEAD (LONG LIVE THE ED) This Tuesday marked the inauguration of Gov. Tom Corbett and the end of an era. A political giant’s reign, Ed Rendell’s eight years as governor, eight years as Philadelphia’s mayor and another eight as the city’s district attorney, left an indelible mark — for better or worse — on Philly and the commonwealth. To honor the man — and to bury him — City Paper held a contest early this week, asking readers to submit, via Twitter, their own summingup of Rendell’s long career in 140 characters or less (using the hashtag #edsdead). We chose the following “winners,” based on creativity and pithiness, but really, you’re all winners. Aw. “And there goes the last soulful progressive ballsy foulmouthed fundraising Macy’s Parade balloon gov that hired a lot of liberals!” —HannahMiller215 “When he wasn’t stuffing his mouth with food, he was removing his foot.” —iPhillyChitChat “So many times I had to explain to outsiders, ‘That’s just Ed being Ed.’ He didn’t hold back, and Phila & PA are better as a result.” —adambonin … And since this was so much damn fun, how’s about a new contest to welcome (using “welcome” liberally) our new governor, Tom Corbett, in 140 or less. Hit us up @citypaper using the tag #hellotomcorbett. —Isaiah Thompson

THE KOOL-AID ³ THERE I WAS, dear readers, your own Man
Overboard!, shouting into the void about the Tucson shootings — and what should you do but assail me with thoughtful, even passionate, responses. (Last week I ridiculed the gun industry’s favorite line, that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” as an abdication of responsibility, and blamed the political “hate industry” for fomenting irrational anger). Surely you’re not drinking the “respectful engagement” Kool-Aid? Very well: Respectfully, I hereby engage. To my friend who read the column over, paused, and said, “This is about one thing: gun control” — I’m coming to agree. The inflammatory rhetoric matters less, I now think, than taking a sober look at the consequences of letting just about anyone purchase super-lethal weapons. And on that note, in response to the reader who wrote me that “guns are no more responsible for death and injury than a lead pencil is responsible for poor penmanship”: I thank you for your letter, but disagree with every neuron in my collected synapses. Ask a cop; ask a federal agent: The availability of assault weapons means that criminals get them more easily. This isn’t speculation, it’s fact: A recent series by The Washington Post (“The Hidden Life of Guns”) revealed that more than 60,000 of the guns fueling the drug wars in Mexico (which, incidentally, have spilled into our country) originated from U.S. stores (Mexico doesn’t let its citizens buy assault weapons). Likewise, the criminals who gun down our police officers: Philly cops have traced innumerable confiscated weapons to originally legal purchases. Bad people kill people, yes — and current gun laws make it easy. By all means, blame the criminals — but I suggest pointing at least one of your 10 fingers at the NRA, too, which opposes even the most rudimentary safeguards. Its populist front is just that — a front. The NRA is the gun industry, and knows full well its weapons are used for crime. Luckily, there is abig, vast, sprawling middle ground that I hope most of us can occupy together. It just requires the gun enthusiasts to give themselves one sharp pinch and wake the hell up: Nobody is trying to take away your right to own a gun — just to impose some rational limits. For Pete’s sake (and I mean that, Pete), the most contentious debate in Congress right now is over whether to reinstate the federal Assault Weapons Ban, which outlawed such public-friendly weapons as the UZI. There’s plenty of room for respectful debate, but let’s start by getting real: Guns aren’t pencils. ✚ Angry one-fingered individuals should direct their complaints to isaiah.thompson@citypaper.net.

the ongoing transformation of East Kensington into a haven for artsy types and other newcomers. The group’s $70,000 portion of the city’s grant, Salzman says, was “big bang for a little buck.” But now everything’s changed. The Nutter administration, in a round of budget cuts this summer, slashed funding for PHS programs, including Community LandCare, leaving PHS with just enough money to continue it through October. Since then, PHS and the neighborhood groups that relied on that funding had been holding out hope that somehow the money would reappear — but that hope has all but faded: The program’s most ardent supporters are now conceding that even if funding were to be secured, it probably won’t be until fiscal year 2012. The cuts have already shuttered NKCDC’s Garden Center, at Frankford and Berks, which sold plants and ran workshops. Salzman had to let all three of her LandCare staff members go. Some 80 seasonal workers have been or are likely about to be laid off by neighborhood organizations around the city, according to Bob Grossman, who heads the PHS Philadelphia Green program, which administers the LandCare money. But, Grossman warns, the real effects won’t be felt

until the spring, when the snow melts, and the trash begins to pile up again — it'll mean “a dramatic change in all these neighborhoods,” he says. Some lots along Frankford are already starting to accumulate garbage. Ironically, the budget cut comes at the same time that the city managing director’s office is working on a blueprint to revamp the way the city deals with vacant land. The maintenance of vacant lots, officials say, will also be hashed out in that process. But Nutter isn’t making any promises: Mayoral spokesman Mark McDonald says only that it’s too early in the budget process to talk about the fate of individual programs — too early for the city, maybe, but dangerously late for those hoping that money will reappear before next year’s budget gets passed. Otherwise, says Grossman, “I don’t see anything happening for the remainder of 2011.” (editorial@citypaper.net)

³ SINCE GETTING ANNOUNCED in November,
it’s been a quiet stroll toward publishing for Jump, journalist/teacher George Miller’s volunteer-based music mag. Until now. The glossy has deadlines soon and it’s due out in March. The first issue is tentatively set to feature tales like “24 Hours at The Ox” (duck!) and stories on West Philly hardcore Hennessy Youngman and Santigold’s brother, Ali White.“I teach at Temple and one of my classes is entrepreneurial journalism,” says Miller. “I’ve had publishers and indie media folks come through. We build journalism products and talk about business models. I got tired of talking about it. That’s where Jump stems from.” ³ Hard to believe it’s four years ago that the Khyber/Royal Tavern guys went south of the border, literally and figuratively, by opening a Mexican restaurant on East Passyunk. They celebrate Cantina Los Caballitos’ anniversary Jan. 20 with homemade lucha libre mask-making and DJ Luis Angel Cancel. Olé. ³ As far as longawaited Philly coffee-table books go (OK, this is the only one, really), Larry Magid’s My Soul’s Been Psychedelicized: Electric Factory: Four Decades in Posters and Photographsis a doozy. The Temple Publishing release date is May 2011 and the book — with Philly Mag’s Robert Huber compiling stuff from Magid’s original Electric Factory, Bijou Café, Spectrum, Tower and the modern-era Electric Factory — features photos from Icepack’s Scott Weiner, Hooters’ Eric Bazilian and a cover snap by Bobby Startup.“They sent me the galleys — it’s a wild shot I did of Pink Floyd at the Spectrum during the Dark Side of the Moon tour,” says a surprised Startup, who has several other photos in the tome, too. Go to Critical Mass this week for more on Startup, including his hookup with Philly-Brit designer/fellow former Stray Cats manager Tony Bidgood as well as that Jan. 31 East Side Club reunion bash. Talking about reunions: I’ll co-host a Goth-god David E. Williams roast/goodbye party for GERM Books at National Mechanics Jan. 24, with stained-glass genie Judith Schaechter, the Nikola Tesla Inventors Club and more. ³“Doom wop” is not my nickname. It’s what Sub Pop’s calling Mister Heavenly, the new act featuring Honus Honus of Man Man and some cats from Modest Mouse and Islands.³That Mitchell & Ness shop at UBIQ on 15th and Walnut that had a quiet holiday opening gets a louder one Jan. 21 with Prince Paul and Rich Medina spinning. ³ Michelle Williams may’ve lost a Golden Globe, but at least she’s getting some local cred. One of her sex scenes (with Ryan Gosling) in the stirring Blue Valentine was lensed at the Valley Forge Radisson’s Star Gazer suite. ³ More celebs, gossip, food, blabbing and such at citypaper.net/criticalmass. feel like I’ve scored whenever I get a job at the Arden,” says veteran Philly actress Grace Gonglewski, who took time out from rehearsing Eugene O’Neill’s A Moon for the Misbegotten to chat about her role as tough-as-nails Josie Hogan. The Barrymore Award-winner has been on this company’s stage at least 20 times before. “I think this makes my 22nd show, actually,” she says. “Or 23? Either way, it’s home.” This time around, she’s really hit the jackpot: Gonglewski’s part of the Arden’s first-ever shot at the exigent O’Neill oeuvre, under director Matt Pfeiffer. And it’s no walk in the park.
GG: As for the insides, I am part Josie. All American women are. I think we think we’re less than we are — too fat, too this, too that — and work hard to keep our partners and families thriving at our own expense. We stuff our real voices down and hide behind masks to survive and avoid pain. Josie’s mask of vitriol is different from mine — when I run lines, I find my face ends up all scowly and scrunched. THE WAY BACK
There’s a long way between escaping and living free.
—David Anthony Fox

BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?: Playing a Soviet refugee in Peter Weir’s The Way Back, Irish actor Colin Farrell struggles with his accent.
Sometimes life really is like a musical. In 2004, Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell wrote a musical about two young guys named Jeff and Hunter who write a musical for the New York Musical Theatre Festival. That show about writing a show — called [title of show] — became a pretty big hit.Audiences lapped up the self-referential fun, and loved watching the antics of four friends (Hunter and Jeff, joined by aspiring actress friends Susan and Heidi) trying to make a living at what they love to do. Nothing big happens, but that’s the point. [Show] wears its small scale as a badge of honor. “Who says four chairs and a keyboard can’t make a musical?” asks the show’s campaign slogan. Actually, I don’t think anybody is denying it. For more than a decade, off-Broadway musicals about musicals have been practically a genre. But where Forbidden Broadway,Urinetown,Musical of Musicals and others traffic in ironic riffs on popular Broadway shows and personalities, [show] explores the creative process. It also goes the extra mile by paying tribute to cult flops (Henry, Sweet Henry) and beloved perennial replacements (Mamie Duncan-Gibbs). If all this sounds like gibberish to you, stop right now — [show] is a niche-market product if ever there was one, and you are not its niche market. But it’s catnip for musical theater queens. [Show]’s jokes are funny, and the songs are clever if unmemorable. The show has quirky charm. Mauckingbird Theatre Co.’s talented cast — actor/singers Kate Brennan, Kim Carson, Ben Dibble and Michael Philip O’Brien, plus music director Mat Wright and two toy monkeys — has quirky charm. Even those four chairs, as diverse in shape and color as any Benetton ad, have quirky charm. It’s directed (by Peter Reynolds) and choreographed (by Brandon McShaffrey) with quirky charm. It would have even more if it didn’t try so hard. Through Jan. 30, $25, Upstairs at the Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St., 215923-8909, mauckingbird.org.

[ B ] PETER WEIR’S FIRST movie since 2003’s Master and Commander is a most welcome return to form, his best since 1993’s overlooked Fearless. The source is Slawomir Rawicz’s 1956 memoir The Long Walk, which details his escape from a Siberian gulag and subsequent 4,000-mile trek to freedom. Rawicz’s account has since been questioned, and may have been fabricated whole or in part, but the strengths of Weir’s film have more to do with its awe-inspiring depiction of the ravages of nature than its historical accuracy. Jim Sturgess plays Janusz, Rawicz’s stand-in, a Pole whose tortured wife falsely accuses him of spying for foreign powers. From his first arrival in the prison camp, Weir amps the sound of howling winds and blots out the screen with frozen flurries. The camp’s commander tells the assembled inmates that their true prison is not made of fences but the implacable wastes around them; there’s a long way between simply escaping and living free. From scouring snows to the pitiless desert, they trek on, searching in vain for a country that has not been touched by the scourge of Stalin. Until its heavy-handed ending, redeemed somewhat by Weir’s lyrical touch, The Way Back serves as an understated allegory about the spread of Soviet totalitarianism, with prisoners from a wide swath of countries making up the ad hoc procession. It’s unfortunate, though, that Weir chose to cast the film almost exclusively with actors from the British Isles: You might be able to accept Sturgess or Colin Farrell or Mark Strong as refugees from behind the Iron Curtain, but not all three at once. Only Saoirse Ronan, as an orphan they pick up along the way, really disappears into her role, and provides a much-needed respite from listening to the more experienced actors struggle with their accents. The Way Back has moments of great and terrifying beauty, but they most often occur when the actors are obscured by the elements. —Sam Adams

at Locks Gallery are typical — in different ways — of the post-holiday season. Most pieces in “Alterations (pictured), a group digital media show on the main floor, curated by visual artist Peter Campus, are too undomesticated for ordinary homes. Institutions may be interested, but few individuals would consider buying these pieces. Upstairs, more people will find things they’d love to own, but the mixed bag of visually attractive landscape-related paintings is not conceptually tight. It doesn’t even have a real title. Campus, a septuagenarian who has influenced generations of video and digital artists, occupies the physical and conceptual center of his group show. The videos he presents here are beautiful recent archetypal landscapes composed of ever-shifting, blurred but squared-off elements in resonant dark colors. It’s impossible not to respond to them. In contrast, an earnest installation of digital prints by Nayda Collazo-Llorens, “Aposiopesis, is only moderately engaging. The word refers to fragmentary or interrupted speech, generally construed to reflect an overexcited emotional state. But any sense of urgency is lacking. In a room populated by lively, active images, these smallish prints come across as an intellectual exercise. In the case of Kathleen Graves, the manipulation of a specific vocabulary of static imagery (reclining child, butterfly, flower) into diverse scattered compositions suggests a narrative. Graves’ real point may be that repeated images arbitrarily morph into linguistic codes. We expect them to tell a story, so we make one up. Not with a whimper but a bang is Jason Varone’s pairing of a simplistic wall painting — a meandering pictogram of a river — with monochrome lowtech video that includes text. The subject seems to be illegal border-crossing in Arizona. Bizarrely, the installation has acquired unanticipated narrative context and energy from the recent shootings in Tucson.
Beryl Korot’s 10-minute textbased Florence (Nightingale) digital video is the most compelling work apart from Campus’. Korot uses Nightingale’s own words to build a poetic sense of aspiration, dedication and honor that is not precisely dependent on logic, narrative images or even complete sentences. A flowing, turbulent but grid-like setting effectively reinforces the piece. Upstairs, two waterfall paintings by Pat Steir — at 70-plus inches tall, which is modest for her work — seem to echo the energy of Korot’s video in bold, exuberant pours of paint. All the paintings in this eclectic gallery are large. The scale of space itself offers a perspective that permits the transformation from abstracted masses of color into recognizable imagery, before the paintings dissolve again into abstract patterns of smaller paint areas. We experience this
We expect a story, so we make one up. transformation in Diane Burko’s writhing Nunatak diptych. It revels in the flowing power of a spatial recession encompassing the frozen mountains that record and resist eons of geographical flux. Severe straight edges define dark and light shapes to make Jennifer Bartlett’s Bridge and Pond a record of human activity superimposed on nature. The most thought-provoking work, though, is Kate Bright’s Grove. In this over-the-top clichÊ, swathes of real glitter mimic sparkling snow on tree branches. The painting’s glamour and generic charm left one gallery visitor struggling to articulate how its beauty might be distinguished from the shallow attractions of Thomas Kinkade, whom she regards as the last nasty word in kitsch. Sorry, Clement Greenberg, regulating such distinctions is futile. (r_rice@citypaper.net)

THE COMPANY MEN|BFinding regular, hard-working Americans facing harsh realities at every strata of society, The Company Men has all the makings of a valiantly cynical Bruce Springsteen tune. Writer/director John Wells sets out to put a human face on the country’s current economic woes, with Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper and Tommy Lee Jones as three casualties of a corporate giant’s downsizing. Affleck is the overachiever with a young family and a Porsche in the garage; Cooper the last of an extinct breed who rose from factory floor to executive suite. Both live lives defined by their careers, finding themselves facing existential as much as financial crises when their pink slips come. Jones, though, has lost his faith even before losing his job. Virtually entombed in a spacious office at work and a sterilely overdecorated mansion at home, he may be the one man left who can still recall the company’s earlier simpler days — and that includes its founder, his boss and best friend (Craig T. Nelson, the perfect picture of a leader whose view of his own construction is permanently filtered through that of its stockholders). The performances breathe some life into what is an excessively schematic portrait of a corporate culture out of control, especially Kevin Costner as Affleck’s working-class (and therefore, of course, more attuned to real values) brother-in-law. Wells’ conclusions, perhaps inevitably for his years in episodic television, are too tidy, but these characters suggest a more complex reality. —Shaun Brady (Rave, Ritz Five)
didn’t insult the legacy of the great Jacques Tati. Rewritten from an unfilmed script by the late master, Chomet’s animated movie follows a bumbling conjurer named Tatischeff (Tati’s real surname), an artiste whose skills are rapidly becoming obsolete. Crowded offstage by British beat combos with flashy suits and gleaming teeth, he schleps his act to ever-smaller venues, carrying a single tattered poster proclaiming his gifts. But when a young girl mistakes his tricks for the real thing, he seizes the chance to recruit one last believer. The pet themes that run through great Tati films like M. Hulot’s Holiday, Mon Oncle and Play Time are stated plainly enough, but Chomet’s clumsy fumbling is no substitute for Tati’s bittersweet deftness. Tati’s fond mourning for the past is balanced by his fascination with the artifacts of modernity, but Chomet is merely nostalgic. The movie’s sentimentality is unearned, even tyrannical, slapped on in great chunks as if mere assertion were enough to get the job done. Chomet’s Triplets of Belleville was similarly grating, but at least its disconnected tableaux were presented as such. Spackling the gaps with syrup does not improve the experience. —Sam Adams (Rave, Ritz at the Bourse)

all-encompassing social network — a Wii-inspired Second Life virtual world that has subsumed the Internet and become a true alternate reality — director Mamoru Hosoda ultimately celebrates old-fashioned flesh-andblood community via the bickering extended family that unites to save the world. The story initially takes the form of a teen romantic comedy, as numbers whiz Kenji is enlisted by his classmate Natsuki to pose as her boyfriend at her strong-willed great-grandmother’s 90th birthday. But the festivities are interrupted by the intrusion of a monstrous artificial intelligence — developed in Japan but unleashed by the U.S. military, natch — into “Oz,” the online community where everything from gaming to shopping to urban utilities are conducted via avatars. The resulting disaster exposes the real world’s crippling reliance on this digital realm, but also showcases the resilience of humanity. Unfortunately, that humanity is depicted in frantic animation not aided by the abrasive, squealing voices of the English dub, making the elegant Oz a tempting sanctuary from the hyperactive reality. —S.B. BLACK SWAN|AAlthough it’s set in the world of ballet, Darren Aronofsky’s movie hits a pitch that would normally be called operatic. Natalie Portman is provisionally cast in her first lead, but she needs to prove she can dance both white and black swan in Swan Lake. Portman nails the glacial perfection of the first, but it takes bad girl Mila Kunis to get her in touch with her dark side. As Portman’s transformation progresses, Aronofsky makes over her body, as well; she decomposes and renews in a manner worthy of a Cronenberg heroine. The trouble is, Portman’s role too closely matches her own limitations as an actor. —S.A. (Ritz East) BLUE VALENTINE|B+ Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling play an unhappily married couple attempting to reignite the flame in Derek Cianfrance’s bombshell feature. The movie’s approach is uniformly glum, but the actors’ bloodied performances find tragedy in the mundane process of falling out of love. Cianfrance prizes verisimilitude over insight, which means the movie gives you a lot to feel but not much to think about. Still, it’s quietly devastating. See it with someone you love, but only if you’re prepared for an uncomfortable discussion afterward. —S.A. (Ritz Five)
THE DILEMMA|C+ A movie based on an idiotic premise can only go so far. Here’s the dilemma:
Ronny (Vince Vaughn) catches his best bud’s wife, Geneva (Winona Ryder), smooching another guy. Should Ronny tell his friend, or let sleeping-around dogs lie? For anyone with even a rudimentary moral compass, the answer’s obvious: Just tell him, dude. But Ronny hesitates, and a wave of seemingly never-ending folly must run its course before anyone gets the balls to admit anything to anyone. —Carolyn Huckabay
THE GREEN HORNET Your position on the Seth Rogen Tolerance Index™ will determine whether you make it through Michel Gondry’s stab at The Green Hornet without suffering a 3-D conniption. Rogen is Britt Reid, the boorish, spoiled son of a cold L.A. newspaper magnate (Tom Wilkinson) who’s forced to take responsibility for a media empire when his dad is felled in a freak accident. Somehow, this turns into a cue for him to team up with science-genius houseboy/barista Kato (Taiwanese superstar actor/singer Jay Chou, in his first Hollywood role) to form a crimefighting duo posing as the new kids on the underworld block. Self-conscious crime boss Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz), threatened by the competition, goes on a tear across L.A., leaving the safety of the city in our hero’s wholly incapable hands. Gondryphiles will love the director’s innovative fight scenes and tossbacks, but as a whole Hornet is a flabby, overlong vehicle that’s too concerned with emboldening Rogen’s shtick to focus on its real breakout strength, the surprising and charming Chou. —Drew Lazor

RABBIT HOLE|B By the time Rabbit Hole opens, Becca and Howie (Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart) have already lost their son, a 4-year-old who dashed out in front of a car eight months earlier. John Cameron Mitchell’s film examines their grief but avoids wallowing in it, keeping a cool but unflinching distance as the couple redefine their lives in the presence of an overwhelming absence. Nicole Kidman is perfectly cast as a woman defined by control; it’s easy to overlook Aaron Eckhart as the husband more comfortable displaying his pain, but his is perhaps the more complex character — trying to hold on to every trace of his son’s memory
The atmosphere Sofia Coppola creates in her fourth feature is so lovely, it’s a shame when it’s roiled by the encroachment of plot. Action star Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is going nowhere fast, marinating in creature comforts as the life slowly seeps out of him. He’s briefly engaged in fleeting moments with his daughter (Elle Fanning), whom he brings along on a trip to a baffling Italian awards ceremony, but mostly he just lets time pass. Coppola breaks Somewhere’s spell in its final reel, grafting on a heavy-handed ending overburdened with sophomore symbolism. Like her protagonist, she knows the best places to hang out, but not where to go from there. —S.A. (Ritz Five)

As the soon-to-be George VI, Colin Firth is a reluctant royal with a stutter that acts up around his domineering father. It grows bad enough for him to seek help from an offbeat Australian, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush); Speech boils down to a series of confrontations between patient and therapist. Rush’s flamboyance is tempered by Firth’s muted sorrow, and his character’s gradual opening gives Firth a chance to push past the boundaries of his own interiority. —S.A. (Ritz Five)

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS|C+ This story, of a Texas con artist whose schemes were fueled by his love for his cellmate, has roots in fact, but coasts glibly on shiny visuals and movie-star charm. Jim Carrey plays Steven Russell, and Ewan McGregor is his prison romance. Once the two meet, the film finds its footing as a lovesick farce. McGregor is released, Carrey breaks out and tracks him down, gets caught, in between passing himself off as anything likely to generate fast income and few questions. Carrey’s low-key performance is commendably campfree, but without shtick to fall back on, he can’t get his hooks in. —S.A. (Ritz at the Bourse)

This is less a battle of sparkly-wand wits and more an effete college roadtrip movie. A fuming Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), enraged by the death of Dumbledore, sets off on a search for the Horcruxes, soul fragments Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has hidden to ensure he never really dies. Harry and his besties traverse landscapes magical and muggle alike, wearing oversize sweaters, sulking and bickering about which direction they’re going. ✚ JEMEEL MOONDOC TRIO While many a veteran of New York’s late-’70s loft scene have traveled far afield — musically as well as geographically — from those legendarily fevered, uncompromising performances, Jemeel Moondoc’s raw, piercing wail is an umbilical link direct to
that time. Founder of the influential ensemble Muntu, which counted William Parker and Roy Campbell among its membership, Moondoc has never strayed far from his exploratory, densely tendriled aesthetic, which will find its latest expression with bassist Hill Greene and drummer Chad Taylor. —Shaun Brady Thu., Jan. 20, 8 p.m., free, Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St., 215-573-3234, rotunda.org.

✚ A NEW BRAIN Don’t miss Plays & Players’ area première of A New Brain, the seldom-seen 1998 William Finn musical about his harrowing brush with death in an all-sung story of a congenital condition, “arteriovenous malformation” (trust me, it’s bad) requiring a craniotomy — making the grim situation more fantastical and inspiring than seems possible. Brendan Norton’s Gordon is a songwriter struggling to churn out tunes for TV frog Mr.
Bungee (Rob Cutler) when a sudden pain lands his face in a plate of pasta and his ass in a hospital bed. Director Daniel Student and musical director Melissa Dunphy’s charming, low-budget production superbly brings Gordon’s hopes and fears to life in an intimate audienceon-stage configuration on the P&P main stage — their only miscalculation, since they’ll clearly need more seats.

LETTUCE PRAY ³ SINCE OUR CURRENT season lacks the outrageous abundance of local produce that rains down in summer and early fall, creativity is required to conceive a worthy cold-weather salad plate. Here are five winter salads showcasing the season. Kale Salad ($8) Our pick for purest expression of a winter salad is the dinosaur kale with candystriped beets and roasted winter squash at Kennett (848 S. Second St.). A thorough shredding and dressing with sharp sherry vinaigrette tenderizes the hardy greens, which are at their best in frosty weather. The interplay of earthy beets, sweet squash and salty cubes of Bulgarian feta, along with a bright chervil/mint/parsley/dill herb combo, make chef Brian Ricci’s creation completely craveable. Maitake Mushroom Salad ($10)Reclining like a vegan pinup on a long white chaise, Horizons’ (611 S. Seventh St.) mushroom salad has sex appeal only the most puritanical omnivore could resist. Rich and fragrant, the roasted mushrooms gilding a forearmsize heap of “little leaves” get a crunch from shaved rutabaga and contrast from grilled green onion. Pistachio vinaigrette brings it all together. Winter Market Salad ($10) Greenhouse-grown arugula lays a peppery bed for shaved fennel, pistachios, shallots and chef Jonathan Adams’ favorite thing about winter: grapefruit supremes. “None of the citrus is local, but winter is their natural growing season,” he says. Ginger vinaigrette adds a spicy note to this emerald tangle at Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.), one of the few seasonal salads about town not relying on winter root vegetables. Rutabaga Tart with Asian Pear Salad ($20) Sheri Waide’s menu at Southwark (701 S. Fourth St.) is always rife with local ingredients, from the farmhouse platter to the rainbow of roasted root vegetables supporting a braised pork shank. Never one to dismiss vegetarians, her most seasonal salad accompanies a mushroom tart entrée ensconced in a crust of ground wild rice. Succulent leaves and crisp roasted rutabaga are a fresh canvas for streaks of sweetness from dried Asian pear; alternated with bites of tender tart, it’s impossible to stop eating. Peekytoe Crab Salad ($10.50) Sourced from Maine by Café Estelle (444 N. Fourth St.), peekytoe crabs exhibit supermodel stats: long legs, little bodies. A heap of the sweet, pristine meat crowns a fan of just-bitter-enough endive leaves and sparklingjewel segments of grapefruit and blood orange; a scattering of toasted hazelnuts provides rich crunch. Gorgeously presented and elegantly balanced, this recurring special should be required study. (restaurants@citypaper.net)

aying people were miffed when the Khyber announced it would be turning into an izakaya is like saying people were miffed about Ruben Amaro dealing Cliff Lee after the ’09 season. More on: There were letters. There were phone calls. There were 62 comments on the Meal Ticket post that broke the story, a thread of protesters hurling die-yuppie-scum vitriol like acid-dipped dodgeballs. “I will never go there again,” said one commenter of the long-running Old City rock club. “The Khyber was probably the best place to see a band in Philly. Way to fuck it up assholes.” “Way to ruin one of the city’s last unique venues and open yet another cookie-cutter yuppie joint,” said another. And perhaps harshest of all: “You are essentially replacing an iconic Philly bar/venue with an Applebee’s.” Five months later, the Khyber is not Japanese — it’s now the NOLA-inspired Khyber Pass Pub, and the Haterade well is dry. “The people who were coming to Old City didn’t want to come to

the Khyber,” reflects Stephen Simons, who owns it (and Royal Tavern and the Cantina twins) with business partner Dave Frank. “And the people who were coming to the Khyber didn’t want to come to Old City.” The Cliff Lee thing worked out, and, judging from the packed house on a recent snowy weeknight, so has this. Entering the Khyber’s front room, where the hulking bar still hogs all the space, neither regular nor newcomer can tell alterations have been made. (Look close to see it’s gained 10 taps, for a total of 22, including a second beer engine.) Passing through the doorway into what was once the buck-wild performance space is where old-timers might get misty. The izakaya concept never did take flight — Simons and Frank are keeping chef Todd Dae Kulper on ice for another project. Instead, the pub debuted with longtime Royal/Cantina chef Mark McKinney and a menu as Southern as an afternoon sweet tea on a plantation porch. Frank, who first fell in love with New Orleans shortly after Katrina, gives backbone to the theme. “The city has become a bit of a second home to me,” he explains. “When I’m not there, I miss the food, the vibe, the culture. I missed good gumbo and barbecue. [Khyber Pass Pub] was our opportunity.” With Simons and McKinney, he set out to stock a menu full of Southern-sourced ingredients like Best Stop andouille, Steen’s cane syrup and >>> continued on adjacent page

Benton’s bacon, whose smoky drippings are deployed to the best brown-paper-bag of popcorn you will ever eat. Leaving a tulip of Hill Farmstead’s mahogany Holger Danske rauchbier streaked with greasy fingerprints, I munched the kernels while awaiting a fried-shrimp po’boy served on a Leidenheimer bun shipped from Louisiana. Khyber Pass Pub gets the de rigueur rolls by the pallet — that’s 1,400 rolls, flash-frozen and stored off-site — but I never would’ve known by the just-baked taste, collapsing slightly around the “dressed” (lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles) filling of crunchy, cornmeal-crusted crustaceans laced with Creole mustard. The po’boys are fashioned in four other styles (including the classic oyster), plus one faux-tein, vegan fried “chicken.” As for the actual fried chicken (brined for 24 hours, coated in a flour/cornmeal mix and, untraditionally, deep-fried), it had a salty, thick exterior that channeled the Colonel a little too much for my taste. Two sides come with all platters; pass on the dry buttermilk biscuit, but definitely get the juicy, hot sauce-spiked collards. Regulars of Cantina and Royal will recognize the shared DNA with Khyber Pass: vamp lights, stiff drinks, a killer burger and vegetarian/vegan choices you actually want to eat. (Charred tomato soup, talking to you.) There are grilled wings in a trio of sauces — the bourbon-kissed chipotle barbecue bests the wussy honey-habañero and respectably spicy Buffalo — and nachos big enough to feed a family of four. Here, jack-webbed tortillas take a Dixie detour with green-tomato salsa verde and a heaping of shredded smoked pork butt. Once dressed with Kansas City, North or South Carolina sauces, this pig goes on to become pulled pork sandwiches and platters, but on the nachos, the unctuous tatters are naked, save for a spritz of vinegar that animates the hickory fumes. Even the specials, chalked on a familiar blackboard, look printed in the same handwriting. Like at other Simons/Frank establishments, it’s just as long as the printed menu, and the wise mine it for treasures like McKinney’s boudin balls. These bayou arancine come three to a crispy-fried order, golden shells cracking open to reveal funky-fresh Carolina rice good and “dirty” with bits of pork shoulder and liver. Steen’s syrup makes its sticky-sweet appearance here, in a dip kicked up with Creole mustard and Crystal hot sauce. “The challenge” for the burger, according to McKinney, “was to top the Royal Burger, or at least equal it if we didn’t want to be laughed at.” Though I’d rank Khyber’s burger below Royal’s, I’m not laughing because it’s a worthy opponent. The patty is an identical 80/20 Midwestern Angus blend and delivered the same wallop of beefy satisfaction. Both have bacon and onions, but instead of pickled long hots, chili mayo and smoked Gouda, the Khyber’s gets Creole mustard and smoked cheddar on absorbent Baker Street brioche. I finished the burger and drained an Oskar Blues pils as the thrum of the crowd mingled with the O.G. jukebox. Though the live music that once echoed through these walls may be dead, the Khyber isn’t by a long shot. (adam.erace@citypaper.net)

BACK THE BUTT UP! Hey you! You stand so close and talk to me like I’m an asshole! Let me tell you this, let’s fight, for him and over him...and I’ll take you down in the jello ring! Then you can go cry while he eats me with whipped cream! Oh yeah...you know it’s true! Later gater.
To all the passengers on the bus when crowded, move to the fuckin back of the bus. There is enough room in the back of it.Senior citizens and handicapped people have to get on, so show some fuckin respect to them. I’ll start shoving you ignorant assholes out of the way .I know some of you are not smart enough to be polite coming from the neighborhood you are coming from.
LETTING GO! I wish I didn’t miss you so much. I’ve dated a lot of guys since the summer and they just don’t compare, maybe I just haven’t met the right one yet but I feel like I am always going to compare them to you. The crazy thing is though that we only dated for three months, I don’t get why I’m not
theirs. Hope you are happy. All we had to do was try and talk and it would have worked out. Now you are nothing but a ho, being used by him. He lies, you believe. How fucking pathetic you became. And like Bruno Mars says, I would take a grenade for you?? I would, but I’m an asshole anyway!
NOT OVER YOU We known each for such along time you were my best friend and a very passionate lover. I miss you every day and when I see your fam i ask about you all the time. I lived my life with out any regrets until the day I picked him over you because of
RE: I’M FUCKING YOUR WIFE I am one of those wives whose husband spend hours on the Wii and Playstation while I sit in my bed waiting for him to kiss me good night. I literally wake him up off the couch at 1am, so he can come to bed. I have had enough of the torture of waiting for the man I married to fuck. I am approached all the time by very attractive and gorgeous men who desire to take me out but I say I’m married. Fuck You my game playing husband!! You won’t ever get it! So I will be the wife someone is fucking, fingering and falling asleep early with a smile on her face because some sexy man made me orgasm multiple times because you don’t have time. Tell Madden and Playstation I said “Thanks.” Oh and to whoever wrote the previous article... I wish I was the wife You are Fucking!
CAN’T SHOVEL SNOW?
TOOTHLESS
To all the lazy bastards who live on corner houses and only shovel the front and don’t shovel the side. I hope when you come outside you fall and break your bloody necks on the non-shoveled sidewalks. You are the lowest scum of the earth. How hard is it to get up and shovel your sidewalk? I hope all of you that read this message and are guilty of this, rot and burn in hell!
I met this girl for the first time last week and she had some nerve to wear a scarf on her head with tight jeans, and no teeth in the front. How can you think you miss it, and you are missing your front teeth. And then you were playing with your cell phone and taking phone calls and taking calls while you were in my company and that was really rude. I got news for your toothless ass. you are not all that you are very, very, very UGLY!
CHAIRS! To all of the fucking dummies that put a chair to save a parking spot. you are breaking the fucking law. The law of Pennsylvania states that it is forbidden to put chairs to save the parking spot you shoveled out. If you want to do that they should add extra money to the real estate taxes you have to pay because the fucking street is public property. It is not right for people that have company that visits them and can’t find a parking spots because of you dumbasses having chairs holding the spot and that mayor is wrong for encouraging this. I can’t wait for the new governor to come in!
WHERE IS MY FUCKING CHECK BITCH...It’s been three months and you continually ignore me and fail to communicate effectively about the status of my paycheck. Your last email to me demanded, “DON’T EMAIL ME AGAIN,” so I’m making your unprofessional behavior public. You should be embarrassed at the way you run your “business.”
YOU ARE EVERYTHING...
Here are a few things U need 2 know before walking around Philadelphia. The same rules that apply to traffic also apply to pedestrians. Stay the fuck to the right except to pass! Go out and buy a helmet so you can get your fat ass and bike off the fucking sidewalk. Leash your filthy dog and clean up the shit that squeezes out of its ass! If you push your baby stroller toward me, be ready to move. I didn’t fuck you, skank! And, put out the fucking cigarettes already! R U retarded?? YES, this means U.
When I saw you when I was coming from lunch.. I was saying to myself...damn I wish that I could have been with you at that particular moment! I wish I could of been. I still think that you are the one for me. I want us to be as one and do the thing together. With that 9 inch long dick you got! I surely miss that shit. I wish that you would come over my house and bang my brains out! Oh, how I want that..and also let you know that we can fuck in my office anytime that you are ready.
I’M ALITTLE LATE
over you yet. I’m just going to stop trying to find someone and put my energy and time into more useful things. But I should probably stop having hope that you are going to come around, so I need to let go, its just hard. I just want you to know how important you were to me even if I didn’t show it then. I use the lighter you bought me in Europe every day.
LOVE & HATE There is such a thin line between love and hate. I hope that you have a great life being a fucking whore to your boyfriend while his wife and kids on the Main Line sit in their house. And his wife doesn’t care one bit, as long as the money keeps coming in. So you ruined two families, ours and
what you where going through at the time. You needed me then and I wasn’t there. I am sorry for that. I just want a chance to make it up to you “G”. You where my world and that will never change just tell me if you feel the same.
PAIR OF BROWN EYES And the only thing that I could see was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me, but when we got back, labeled parts one to three, there was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me.’ I’ve written you many things over the years, full of sappy unrequited longing to the point that it sounded as if I was that broken record skipping on each play, but if you hear your favorite song, think of me...Xo, the Unicorn from Sienna.
There are certain restuarants that must keep their grease for weeks and then when you order a cheesesteak and have it delivered you must reuse the grease and that is fucking nasty. That is why I hope your establishment goes out of business. because your nasty piece of crap cheesesteak made me sick the entire night. How would you like for someone to give you food with reused grease?

WRONG WITH SOCIETY! So it’s 4:30 am on Thursday, January (technically now the next day) and I’ve just been woken out of a deep sleep on Sepviva St. I hear a woman screaming bloody murder and get out of bed and run to the window, certain that someone is being attacked outside. Then, from outside “I need the phoooooone!” you were screaming across the street at 4:30 am to use a phone? You are the reason why people in the city don’t respond anymore when they hear people screaming for help outside. You are retarded.
