NOT MUCH TO LOOK AT: The humble façade of First Century Gospel Church in Juniata Park belies an intense belief that God will provide — even when it comes to medical help. NEAL SANTOS

[ religion ]

THE FACE OF FAITH CP visits a Philly church that believes God is the best doctor — and the only one. By Matt Stroud

T

wo years ago, Herbert and Catherine Schaible placed their infant son, Kent, into bed with apparent flu symptoms and, under the direction of their church pastor, prayed over the boy instead of seeking medical help. The child died in his sleep. The couple was arrested three months later and charged with involuntary manslaughter. The case went to trial in December, and lasted five days, ending with the jury convicting the Schaibles, finding that even modest medical care for Kent — such as a trip to a doctor or a few doses of Tylenol to reduce the infant’s fever — might have saved him. Last Wednesday, the Schaibles appeared in court again, this time to be sentenced. Herbert Schaible, 42, wore a clean black suit, his graying hair cropped short and stiff. His wife, Catherine, 41, wore gray slacks and a pink long-sleeved sweater. They appeared calm and composed, bearing little resemblance to the mugshots posted in the Daily News and the Inquirer that made them appear disheveled, exhausted and petrified. Senior Judge Carolyn Engel Temin stated the facts: The Schaibles are lifelong members of First Century Gospel Church, an independent fundamentalist Christian sect that believes, among other things, that seeking medical help goes against the will of God. The two have been married since 1994 and have seven children — four girls and three boys. Herbert is employed as a seventh- and eighth-

grade teacher for a school that’s supported by the church and that goes only through 10th grade. Catherine is a stay-at-home mom. Their income, the judge noted, is modest. Pointing out that, according to Pennsylvania state law, “religious freedom is trumped by the safety of the child,” Engel Temin handed down her sentence: 10 years probation, the terms of which include a requirement that the Schaibles schedule regular appointments with a “qualified medical person” for all their children and release their children’s medical records to probation officers. “I don’t think you are bad people,” the judge said. “But I do think you need to comply with your sentence,” adding that the “penalty if you do not comply is a jail sentence.” That night, at the invitation of the Schaibles’ pastor, CP went to visit their congregation. First Century Gospel Church is housed in a stucco-covered building sitting inconspicuously among the rowhomes of the city’s Juniata Park neighborhood in near-Northeast Philadelphia. It’s been there since 1925, and the congregation now numbers about 80 families (virtually all white) comprising 500 members — meaning each couple averages four children, double the national average. Their affinity for larger families is just one — and not, by a long shot, the most surprising — of several characteristics that set the church far apart from the Christian mainstream. The members of First Century Gospel Church do not, for example, believe in owning any kind of personal property or land. Upholding

“I don’t think you are bad people.”

³ BETWEEN REIGNITING HIS legal career with Ballard Spahr, alighting his television commentator role (thanks to Ari Gold — I mean, Ari Emmanuel) and getting that columnist gig with philly.com, you haven’t had much chance to miss Ed Rendell. He just won’t go away. But let Tom Corbett settle in and trim away all the fun stuff that Fast Edward brought us, and you’ll be throwing Rendell a few parties, pronto. Wilma Theater’s the first one in. As mayor, Ed helped settle the Wilma on the burgeoning Avenue of the Arts 15 years ago, so they’re handing him a Wilma Star Award during their first-ever Theater Lover’s Fête (with casino gaming tables — he’ll love that) Feb. 11 at the Ormandy Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel. Sweet. ³ Nick Sanfratello made your ’90s, G. Now he’s set to make your 21st century. Sanfratello had the original vegan World Café at Fourth and South back in the day, before donating the naming rights to WXPN. (Call David Dye and ask him!). Nick got out of the food biz, went into the bar biz and opened Philly’s two wonkiest, hippest bars, Café Limbo and the Bongo Room. (Nick also sang for Red Weather, the first band ever to play Dobbs in its original incarnation before all this.) He retired for a minute. Now he’s back in the all-vegan/non-GMO biz with Nick’s Vegan Cafe on N. 33rd next to the John Coltrane House near Fairmount Park. He’s vegan-ing traditional comfort foods such as seitan cacciatore and cheeseteaks, veggie meatballs and some fabulous baked goods (muffins and congo bars like my fave Mango Goji Berry) set to go into Whole Foods momentarily. Check Meal Ticket for more, or hit nicksvegan. com. And welcome back. ³ Another back-welcoming thing: Franzschubert & the Schubs play that new-fangled World Café Live Feb. 11. F&tS appearances are incredibly rare, as Ian Jarvis has moved into art directing for film (Troma stuff) and Andrew Lipke has become the next Bright Eyes with better hair and a higher voice. ³ Since leaving major-label-baby PR at the end of 2010, prodigal Philadelphian Becca Lane has come home, joined Sharla Feldscher PR, left Sharla Feldscher PR, started her own media publicity/consultant firm beccalane.com and just became MAD Dragon Records’ official PR mistress. Girl works fast. ³ The biggest restaurant event in the DelVal, Dining Out for Life, celebrates its 21st year of raising funds for local AIDS testing and care, announcing its 2011 date (April 28) and a new sponsor (Camden’s Dooley House). Do this. ³ Can’t share Philly electro-magnate Wesley Eisold’s new Cold Cave album on Matador (Cherish The Light Years, due in April) yet. Just know it’s at Icepack Central and is awesome scary, smart and deeply, darkly anthemic. Hey yo. ³ Like Cubes? Try citypaper.net/criticalmass. (a_amorosi@citypaper.net)

CREEPERS: The latest album by Creeping Weeds evokes the hybridized psych of Olivia Tremor Control and the eclectic style-hopping of Revolver.

[ rock/pop/enigma ]

NEXT LEVELS The Creeping Weeds get complicated on See Through. By John Vettese

T

here’s a puzzle in the latest Creeping Weeds album. See Through’s cover photo, taken by guitarist/percussionist Kate Stewart, is a still life of an ornate room: chipped blue paint on the wall, an oval mirror and candelabra, a ship on a pedestal, a laptop on a hutch — each item referencing one of the 11 songs within. The band’s name is spelled out in yarn on the floor. Inside the gatefold is the same scene, only some things are rearranged or missing, and there’s a hole punched in the wall. Finally, the back cover More on: peers into the room from that hole. “I think it functions as a sort of visual interpretation of our music,” says singer-guitarist Pete Stewart — brother to Kate, husband to keyboardist/vocalist Cara Stewart. “There are many layers that are all interconnected, and there are lots of small details.” He hopes listeners will take something new away from the album and its artwork each time. We’re sitting in the band’s basement studio and practice space in Chinatown. Both See Through and Creeping Weeds’ 2007 debut, We Are All Part of a Dream You’re Having, were recorded here. The band (the Stewarts, plus bassist Justin Seitz and drummer Chris Wirtalla) has learned and grown together, which is probably why See Through took a year and a half to make, where their debut

citypaper.net

dragged on for more than three. “We’ve been doing it long enough,” Seitz says. “We know what to do to make things sound the way we want them to.” Example: the ebullient “Light in the Window,” a rollicking affirmation of a pop song with a massive hand-clap coda — 25 tracks worth, Wirtalla says — and a rich acoustic guitar tone. If they’d tried doing that for Dream, Stewart says, “we really would have botched it up.” Along with the layers of experience come layers of styles and sounds. See Through can be bright (the gauzy guitar of “Weekend at the Shore,” the warm organ drive of “Outsiders”) as easily as it can be melancholic and claustrophobic (unsteady leadoff track “Fountain”). Hybridized psych from the ’90s, like Olivia Tremor Control, is an easy reference point, as is the eclectic style-hopping of Revolver. “I like albums that jump around a lot like that,” says Stewart. “To me, it gets boring if it all comes FRANK’S ARK: A LOfrom the same place.” CAL ARTIST GETS Stewart gravitates toward oceanic imagO N B O A R D AT C I T Yery on several of See Through’s tracks, and PA P E R . N E T / A R T S . escape is the common theme throughout. The album concludes on a line describing the scene on the cover: “There’s a secret that the mirror hides/ A hidden portal to another life/ We’ll smash the mirror and away we’ll climb.” “It’s not that important for people to analyze the song too heavily for an exact meaning,” he says. “The lyrics can mean something different to them than they do to me, and that’s OK. Some of the lyrics have multiple meanings to me.” (john.vettese@citypaper.net) ✚ Sat., Feb. 12, 9 p.m., $10, with Cheers Elephant and Hong Kong Stingray,

OSCAR SHORTS: LIVE ACTION

It’s all about narrative economy.

³ NOTHING IN YOUR PAST can prepare you for

the awesome terribleness of Big Gee’s Retrologie. It doesn’t matter whether you were raised by Satanists on the grounds of Neverland Ranch, fed a steady diet of LSD and Freon, and later abducted by aliens and anally probed with a ThighMaster to the sound of Burgess Meredith singing King Diamond’s greatest hits; you have no frame of reference by which to grasp how truly fucked-up Retrologie is. What we have here is a collection of big band numbers cross-pollinated with disco in such a way as to make Taco’s version of “Puttin’ on the Ritz” sound like “War Pigs.” If this CD were any campier, it would be married to Liza Minnelli. The fact that 99 percent of the songs are sung in German is the icing on the urinal cake. If Retrologie were a scene from a movie, it would be that bit in Dogtooth wherein the one daughter launches into a solo dance routine and then, a few minutes later, you realize she’s trying to re-create the choreography from Flashdance, and you’re left muttering, “Seriously, what the fuck?” Verdict: While it’s tempting to hand the boys in Big Gee a pass on account of the huge balls it must have taken to stir up this amazing crapgasm, the sad truth is, the initial shocking badness of Retrologie wears off shortly into the second listen, leaving only the same sort of morbid curiosity that one normally satiates by slowing down to get a good look at a traffic accident. Seriously, what the fuck? (r_anonymous@citypaper.net)

FOR THE SHORTIES: Na Wewe (top), Wish 143 and the rest of the Oscar-nominated live-action short nominees teach life lessons succinctly.

[ B+ ] IN THE CONFESSION, 9-year-old Sam worries that he doesn’t have any sins to reveal for his first confession. When he and his best friend conjure a scheme to provide one, it goes spectacularly wrong. Like 2011’s other Oscar-nominated live-action short nominees, Tanel Toom’s film demonstrates the effectiveness of narrative economy. Sam’s dilemma is rendered in close-ups of his freckled face and the confessional door creaking in his nightmares, as well as mournful long shots of empty roads stretching over rural horizons. In Michael Creagh’s The Crush, 8-year-old Ardal faces a different sort of dilemma: When he comes to believe his beloved teacher is engaged to the wrong fellow, he takes rather sensational action to save her. Meanwhile the hero in the beautifully black-and-white God of Love is technically adult, but Raymond Goodfellow (played by director Luke Matheny) is also rather perpetually naïve. Sad that the drummer in his lounge act doesn’t return his affection, he makes use of a box of love-potion darts, only to learn that true love is generous rather than self-centered. The 15-year-old cancer patient in Ian Barnes’ Wish 143 is less specific about his object of affection, hoping only to lose his virginity before he dies. As his tumor grows, he comes to understand that intimacy isn’t just sex, but a shared appreciation of simple sensual pleasures. And in the Belgian film Na Wewe, the terrible illogic of genocide is focused through a brief confrontation. In Burundi, fierce, armed Hutus pull over a taxi full of presumed Tutsis, seeking payback for previous wrongs. But as it becomes increasingly unclear how to identify individuals who are born into mixed families or unable to name their parents, as guns are waved and tensions escalate, the sides become less defined, and the mutual fears more pronounced. Like the other nominees, Ivan Goldschmidt’s short teaches a lesson, though its handheld camera and historical allusions make it seem most urgent. —Cindy Fuchs

“We put our money into something we believe in,â€? says choreographer Kun-Yang Lin, who in 2008 opened South Philly’s CHI Movement Arts Center to oversee one of the city’s most sought-after experimental troupes. With intelligence and grace, Lin brings the Far East to Philadelphia with a nearly-sold-out full-length program at the Painted Bride. Retaining the philosophy and style of his native Taiwan, Lin incorporates tai chi and calligraphy into Mandala Project, which he insists is not as mystical as it might sound. “Returning to the circle,â€? It took one man to pen Romeo and Juliet, a timeless classic that has endured for more than 400 years. But it somehow required eight screenwriters to devise this cringeworthy update, which will be lucky to still be remembered when its

THE EAGLE|C A director as elegant and well-read as Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September, The Last King of Scotland) might seem an odd fit for a adaptation of a nearly-60year-old children’s novel, but it turns out his graceful eye is the principal star of this liberties-taking spin on Rosemary Sutcliff’s 1954 adventure classic The Eagle of the Ninth. Shot in the wilds of Hungary and Scotland, The Eagle is absolutely gorgeous, and could very well double as B-roll for use by European tourism boards if it weren’t for all the disemboweled tribal Picts sullying up the screen. The action follows young Roman military hero Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum — so cute, so stiff) in the second century A.D., as he seeks to clear the name of his father, a commander who lost his entire legion — and the titular bird-shaped gold standard — in the lawless lands north of Hadrian’s Wall. He enlists the help of Esca (Jamie Bell), a Roman slave and erstwhile Celtic noble, as his right hand and translator, their unstable trust serving as the crux of the storytelling. But looks aren’t everything, and after the first 10 or so gloweroffs between our alpha and beta bros, the flatness of each character becomes a dulling liability. The best performance by far in Macdonald’s pretty/petty film comes from the tremendous Tahar Rahim (A Prophet), who’s wild-eyed and unpredictable as the war-painted prince of the bloodthirsty “seal people.” —Drew Lazor (UA 69th St., UA Riverview)

Happy Meal toys first show up on garage sale tables. That’s not counting the contributions of executive producer Elton John, who contributes a pair of treacly new songs and a score largely composed of orchestrated versions of his older hits. The major point of inspiration comes from finding a rhyme for “gnome” in the title and devising an adaptation based on feuding clans of lawn ornaments. Shakespeare references abound, but Gnomeo is far less indebted to the Bard than it is to its far superior animated predecessors. The irreverent take on fairy tales is borrowed from Shrek (director Kelly Asbury also helmed the second installment in that series), the adventurous inanimate objects from Toy Story, the irritating comic relief character with the funny accent (in this case a gregarious pink flamingo) from movies too numerous to name. This being a kid’s movie, double-suicide is obviously out for the ending; the only tragedy here is the witless script, stuffed with dated pop culture references and creaky puns, that beleaguered parents will be forced to endure. —Shaun Brady (UA 69th St., UA Grant, UA Riverview)

to appreciate each other’s seemingly separate spheres of influence, the latter offers a comic look at our “legacy” of pollution, with an old-style announcer celebrating planned obsolescence and corporations’ production of “crap you want to buy” as well as “tons and tons of toxic waste.” Jakob Schuh and Max Lange’s The Gruffalo features celebrity voices (Helena Bonham Carter, John Hurt) to tell the story of a mouse who invents a monster to scare off hungry forest creatures when the gruffalo actually appears, the mouse’s next story demonstrates the power of imagination. The Lost Thing is more plainly poignant, as a young man finds an uncategorizable “thing,” composed of green tentacles and red industrial metal. As he helps it to find a place to fit in, the process leads the man to reflect on his own changing interests, the loss of his childhood appreciation

of randomness, even as he hangs on to a certain sentimentality. The most unusual and effective of the group is a French film, Madagascar: A Journey Diary, directed by Bastien Dubois. Using multiple and exceedingly charming 2-D animation techniques — and literally turning pages — it offers a tourist’s view of the island off Africa’s southeastern coast, brief glimpses of daily activities and long-standing traditions, soccer matches and beach adventures. —Cindy Fuchs (Ritz at the Bourse)

(James Franco) finds the sticky end of solitude when he’s trapped at the bottom of a ravine, his right arm pinned by a boulder. Like a steroidal Into the Wild, the movie follows Aron to the logical end of his lone-wolf lifestyle, leaving him with nothing but his wits and the contents of his backpack. It may take a while to recover from the stomachturning climax, but that’s only because Danny Boyle succeeds so thoroughly in getting under your skin. —Sam Adams (Ritz at the Bourse)

OSCAR-NOMINATED SHORT FILMS (LIVE ACTION)|B+

BARNEY’S VERSION|B C.S.I. veteran Richard J. Lewis makes the jump to features with the sprawling story of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti), a hack TV producer who’s a romantic on the side. Spanning several decades, the movie is pushed forward by his revolving-door marriages, first to a suicidal poet, then a high-maintenance socialite. Not until he meets wife No. 3 (Rosamund Pike) at the reception for his marriage to wife No. 2 does Barney get his first taste of bona fide love. Barney’s Version isn’t a film so much as a series of episodes, but watching Giamatti and Pike chart their relationship’s ups and downs is a worthwhile pursuit. —S.A. (Ritz Five)

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling play an unhappily married couple attempting to reignite the flame in Derek Cianfrance’s bombshell feature. The movie’s approach is uniformly glum, but the actors’ bloodied performances find tragedy in the mundane process of falling out of love. Cianfrance prizes verisimilitude over insight, which means the movie gives you a lot to feel but not much to think about. See it with someone you love, but only if you’re prepared for an uncomfortable discussion afterward. —S.A. (Ritz Five)

THE COMPANY MEN|BFinding regular, hard-working Americans facing harsh realities at every strata of society, The Company Men has all the makings of a valiantly cynical Bruce Springsteen tune. Writer/ director John Wells sets out to put a human face on the country’s current economic woes, with Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper and Tommy Lee Jones as three casualties of a corporate giant’s downsizing. The performances breathe life into what is an excessively schematic portrait of a corporate culture out of control; Wells’ conclusions are too tidy, but these characters suggest a more complex reality. —S.B. (Ritz Bourse) THE FIGHTER|B+ While the true story of “Irish” Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) has the makings of a Rocky-style “triumph of the human spirit,” David O. Russell finds plenty of fodder for his more caustic imaginings in Ward’s family. The most monumental obstacles Ward confronts come out of being born into a large clan intent on undercutting any chance of success in the name of a delusional family honor. Russell succumbs to a penchant for cheap caricature, never deciding between black comedy or hardscrabble drama. But he wisely keeps the direct brutality within the messiness of life outside the ring. —S.B. (UA Riverview) THE GREEN HORNET|BSeth Rogen is Britt Reid, spoiled son of a cold L.A. newspaper magnate (Tom Wilkinson), forced to take responsibility for a media empire when his dad is felled in a freak accident. Somehow, this turns into a cue for him to team up with science-genius houseboy/barista Kato (Taiwanese superstar actor/singer Jay Chou, in his first Hollywood role) to form a

crime-fighting duo posing as the new kids on the underworld block. As a whole Hornet is a flabby, overlong vehicle that’s too concerned with emboldening Rogen’s shtick to focus on its real breakout strength, the surprising and charming Chou. —D.L. (UA 69th St., UA Riverview)

THE KING’S SPEECH|B+ As the soon-to-be George VI, Colin Firth is a reluctant royal with a stutter that acts up around his domineering father. It grows bad enough for him to seek help from an offbeat Australian, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush); Speech boils down to a series of confrontations between patient and therapist. Rush’s flamboyance is tempered by Firth’s muted sorrow, and his character’s gradual opening gives Firth a chance to push past the boundaries of his own interiority. —S.A. (Ritz Five)

THE MECHANIC|D Those with a hard-on for Jason Statham will be hugely disappointed by this flaccid remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson vehicle. As assassin for hire Arthur Bishop, Statham’s best moments are in the first 10 minutes: He efficiently executes an execution, and he takes his shirt off — twice. But Statham’s magnetism is so completely absent here, fans will feel betrayed like the various double-crossed characters. They may even want revenge. —Gary M. least there are multiple hot babes in it” subcategory that’s allowed stuff like Coyote Ugly and The Sweetest Thing to achieve life eternal on basic cable. It is unfortunate for them — and ideal for us — that this shockingly shameless rip-off of Single White Female sucks so incredibly hard that this is probably the last you’ll ever hear of it. The beautiful Minka Kelly plays Sara, a bushy-tailed small-town girl who relocates to L.A. for fashion school. She bunks up with Rebecca (Leighton Meester), who is equally lovely but also batshit crazy, which you can tell because they do about 600 shots of her staring sullenly at herself in a mirror (this is what crazy people DO!). It’s not long before Rebecca starts emulating aspects of Sara’s personality to an alarming degree, whether it’s co-opting The Devil Wears Prada as her fave movie (real original, girl — branch out! have you seen Straw Dogs?) or getting the name of Sara’s dead sister tattooed on her chest. Things escalate, people get hurt, an adorable kitten named Cuddles “disappears,” fucking Billy Zane shows up wearing a jeff cap and is framed for sexual assault, blah blah blah. Both Kelly and Meester are better than this flaming shit flotilla. —D.L. (UA Riverview)

✚ BLASTED British playwright Sarah Kane might be best known for how her brief career ended — with her 1999 suicide at age 28 — but her notoriety was assured by her controversial 1995 debut, Blasted, one of only five plays

she wrote. Now Luna Theater Co. artistic director Gregory Scott Campbell revives the play first condemned as a sensationalist taboo-breaker for its starkly violent vision of a war-torn England and three lost souls clawing for survival. Belated praise for Blasted emerged after a 2001 revival, when critics compared her work to expressionist drama, Jacobean tragedy and Samuel Beckett. Better late than never. —Mark Cofta Through Feb. 27, $12.50-$32, Upstairs at the Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St., 866811-4111, lunatheater.org.

as swiftly as General Lee’s minions, I only wish for this note to articulate my deepest affections. Perhaps years from now my very words will be on display, along with other classic expressions of poetic passion, to inspire others by their sentiments. Visitors could take part in a rare exploration of these intimate messages of infatuation. It would be the perfect way to spend a Friday afternoon during Cupid’s busiest season. I must be off to heed my country’s call, but my heart remains with thee always.Affectionately, Hezekiah. —Eric Schuman

suggests our modern tendency to leave no impulse undocumented, no sentiment unarchived. But their music evokes an earlier age when memory was cultural rather than digital, and its products all the more precious. Not unlike a scrappier, more acoustic Los Lobos, the Boston outfit — theoretically a duo (Wax on various Mexican guitars; Suz Slezak on fiddles and quijada, or donkey jawbone) — commingle the musical heritages of Mexico and the U.S. (back-porch folk; dusty country) for a beguiling cross-cultural hybrid all their own. —K. ✚ DEERHOOF These lovable San Fran oddballs have been churning out puzzling, playfully chaotic experimental art-pop-rock for 15 years, but somehow they

manage to seem as fresh as bands half that young, always tinkering with their precociously polymorphous approach and yielding delightful new twists. Deerhoof vs. Evil (Polyvinyl), one of their most enjoyable and engaging records yet, is a comparatively mellow affair, but they still crunch and coo and shimmer and sputter and generally kick butt like the laser-powered, cotton-candy superheroes they’ve always been. —K. ✚ OPERA COMPANY OF PHILADELPHIA No writer has influenced more composers than Shakespeare, and no Shakespeare has inspired more music than Romeo and Juliet. The most-performed operatic version (of at least 24) is from 19th-century French

composer Charles-François Gounod, and it’s a beaut. OCP cannot resist the casting of a locally sourced couple in the lead roles, Stephen Costello and Ailyn Pérez, who met as students at the Academy of Vocal Arts. They had a brief trial run as an OCP couple in Puccini’s comedy Gianni Schicchi in 2009, and they were — no better way to put it — adorable. HOT KOKO Kokopelli’s clubby feel doesn’t diminish its culinary appeal. By Adam Erace KOKOPELLI | 1904 Chestnut St., 215-557-7510, kokopelliphilly.com.

Open Sun.-Thu., 4-10 p.m.; Fri.-Sat., 4 p.m.-mid.; bar till 2 a.m. Soups and salads, $5-$6; seafood, $7-$15; meat, $8-$17; sides, $4-$6.

n three years, three concepts have occupied the glitzy walls of 1904 Chestnut. First came Pearl, pimping bottles to the wannabe elite. Then there was Akoya, a star-crossed pan-Asian affair. More on: Now the tenant is Kokopelli, a spot specializing in Southwest small plates and named for the American Indian god of fertility. Out on Chestnut, the sign has changed. Inside, the space is as unfashionably slick as ever. Beaded curtains shimmer like gunmetal waterfalls, dividing buttercream banquettes as padded as a white-collar criminal’s Cayman Islands account. Recessed into the ceiling and under the sleek bar, a state-of-the-art LED lighting system casts the room in 283 shades. Crayola, eat your heart out. Managing partner Adam Solomon, who opened Kokopelli with Kenny Yeretzian and Rich Brenner, grew up in the restaurant biz, fixed to the hip of his grandfather, operator of Seafood Shanties in the ’70s and ’80s, and Horn & Hardarts in the early ’90s. More recently, Solomon helped Old City’s Rococo transition

into the (now-defunct) World Fusion, and the nightlife background could be an omen for the future of Kokopelli, the first restaurant he’s owned. Or maybe not. Solomon has done what he can to exorcise the space’s ghosts of clubs past: painting, installing handsome bar shelves for Kokopelli’s tequila collection, setting those LEDs to “fire colors” that evoke a Southwest sunset. “I want Kokopelli to have a neighborhood feel,” he says, and while that seems ludicrous in the restaurant’s current state, he might achieve such a vibe after some planned changes to the décor are executed. Happily, the kitchen already has that feeling, thanks to chef Gina Rodriguez. Though her plates are uncommonly pretty — accessorized with caramelized onions and oyster MORE FOOD AND mushrooms, the fluffy tamales are objects DRINK COVERAGE d’art in corn-husk coveralls — her cooking AT C I T Y P A P E R . When food is as homey and satisfying as the Arizona native’s green chili-stewed chicken (an old family recipe), does it matter where it’s served? “The flavors I incorporate are what I was raised around in Tucson,” says Rodriguez, who moved here for this gig. “I get to combine my formal training with flavors that are comforting to me.” That formal training includes Le Cordon Bleu in Scottsdale, followed by positions at John Besh’s August and on the SoCal resort circuit. The experiences make her food look and taste tight and clean, but those skills fall back to what she learned in her Mexican/ American Indian family’s kitchen. close proximity to ice sounds like the perfect recipe for water. In reality, they’re the two required elements for the technique known as cold-smoking. What we generally refer to as smoking — stringing something over a flame so the cast-off smoke cooks it — is technically “hot-smoking.” Coldsmoking is considered more a means of preservation. The science behind cold-smoking, practiced only in the winter months, is simple: Exposing a salt-cured protein, over time, to a calm smoke (think 70 degrees Fahrenheit or lower) preserves it, since the phenolic compounds present in smoke slow the oxidation of fat. Cold-smoking ensures such results are achieved without fully cooking through — and thus reducing the lifespan of — a protein, as with hot-smoking. One local place to witness the art form in its purest scarf-weather form is Café Estelle (444 N. Fourth St.), where Marshall Green reserves sides of organic Irish salmon for the tin-can smoker he keeps in the parking lot outside. He loads one chamber of his smoker with hickory chips. In a second chamber, he rests his salmon — cured in a mixture that includes salt, coriander and lemon zest — on a grill grate, trays of ice directly underneath it. Once the hickory chips are sparked, the salmon enjoys the company of this “easy smoke” for six hours before Green slices it up for anything from a deli-style fish platter to salmon scrambled eggs with caviar. Brian Lofink of Sidecar Bar & Grille (2201 Christian St.) cold-smokes salmon for his brunch menu. “[Cold-smoked salmon] is almost like eating a really nice, thinly sliced prosciutto,” says Lofink of the finished product, which carries a subtler smoky flavor. “Not overwhelming, more balanced.” Speaking of pork: Jeremy Nolen of Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St.) cold-smokes Westphalian ham, a Teutonic specialty flavored with adjuncts like juniper berries and black pepper, for 16 hours. He shuts off his rotisserie, loads it up with ice and positions an external smoker box to get the job done. “I love the dimension of flavor [cold-smoking] can add to foods when done right,” says Jason Cichonski, who’s working on opening Mica (8609 Germantown Ave.) with Blackfish’s Chip Roman. The former Lacroix chef has tried the process with maple syrup, brioche dough, Parmesan rinds and lobster fat, and hopes to incorporate it onto Mica’s menu. By the time the restaurant opens, though, the atmosphere might not want to cooperate — coldsmoked fare is shelved come spring, so get it while it’s hot/cold. (drew.lazor@citypaper.net)

[ i love you, i hate you ] BARBED WIRE LOVE It seems like a lifetime ago that what we had was something others envied, and now all we do is try to get through another day in hell. Maybe one day we can get back to those nights of drinking beer in the dark and talking about anything til the sun came up, being happy to see each other, or maybe I’ll just be happy enough to have these memories. Seems all I have is mistrust and doubt, and I’m starving for some kinda love, some kinda something aside from silence and sadness. Happy Valentine’s Day. Hope things get better, or I hope you find that what or who that makes you want to get up in the morning with a light heart. I hope at some point I was the girl you dreamed of your whole life.

Our customers like me more because I make better coffee than you. We are supposed to be a team but instead you just say I’m doing things my way and that’s that. Eat a fucking dick you loser. I won’t be here much longer and after I leave this place is gonna drown. Did I say fuck you?

I NEED YOU! I need you to understand that you and I aren’t meant to be! I told you before, that you and I are just wasting our time thinking that we should be together because it is not going to happen! I am in love with who I am in love with and you need

facade I try my darndest to put up to you, all the while pining away for you on the inside. Perhaps you know the truth? Perhaps my acting isn’t as convincing as I thought, giving the permission to just walk on me. All I want is to give you what you deserve-indifference. This is my goal. All it will take is time and/or another man to distract me. In the meantime, you’ll never know how much I truly LOVE you. I would love to believe that you have broken my heart for the last time. I would love to believe that I can turn away from you when you eventually reach out. How can I do that? A new man-that’s how! He is out there—my interest will

DON’T SHOW FACE NOW! I love when everyone comes out and shovels their sidewalk and cleans off their cars and does a nice job. I hate the one who got 17 people in a house who can’t come outside and shovel than wait two days later to shovel the walk when it’s already ice! I hate those jerks who won’t move through red lights when the hear lights and siren coming, move out the way and it goes to all those drivers in Center City who want move hear lights and siren coming move out the way and it goes to all those drivers in Center City who won’t move.

RESTAURANT SCUM To the unsatisfied asshole customers who complain at the restaurant, here is a big fuck you. We have to sweat and bust our balls over a stove and that all you douche bags do is fucking complain like children. Then you pricks give our waiter/waitress a hard fucking time and give them a cheap tip. Here is a tip for you dicks stay the fuck home and cook for your fucking selves. Worse off you idiots come in during a fucking blizzard to eat. Stay the fuck home during snow storm. The next time you dicks complain I`m going to smack the shit out of you snobs.

I DO

You don’t take anything I have to say seriously. You are corny. I hate your handwriting even especially when you draw gay ass pictures at the end of your message. I want to hit your face so hard. You put things in the stupidest places and change things that I do without first talking to me like an adult. You are a retard and the music you listen to SUCKS. No one wants to listen to that bullshit.

What’s going on with some of Philly youth? On MLK day I went to the mall in the suburbs. I had a nice quiet time there. When I returned to Philly it was a different story. While walking through Market East Station near Reading Terminal Market, I saw about 8-10 males dragging another boy across the floor. They were hitting, kicking and laughing at him. It lasted a few seconds and then the kid got up and the others ran off. You kids don’t know the significance of your history or what MLK day even means. It’s just a day off from school to some of you. If he were alive, MLK would shake his head at some of today’s youth. I wondered if brief flurries I saw that day were Martins’ tears. Hats off to those who did positive things that day.

Hey Philly boy, this is your girl texas, I miss u. I love you and I hate all the drama that is going on right now. iI’s crazy how my people can hate you without knowing you, they think they can keep us apart, but they never will. You are mine, you belong with me, you are the beating of my heart. you are my husband and I will choose you first over them, even if they are my family and have been here all my life. You are my new life now, I’m hoping ill find out this month whether, Deanna is going to be on the way, as soon as I do, I will tell you. baby don’t give up on us. I love you so much and will be back home soon. Love you booboo.

Have you no fucking couth people? I am so friggin sick and tired of walking in and out of buildings through clouds of cigarette smoke. And you know what the worst part is? It’s not just stanky hipsters, it’s each and every one of you. At first I politely said, “excuse me” and now I shoot eye daggers and give you the stink eye. It drives me crazy that I have NO OTHER OPTION when I just want to go to fucking work that I have to walk through your shit. How about if I sat at the entrance of all buildings you had to go into and ripped HOT STINKY FARTS that you had to walk through? Who’d be dying slowly then, eh?

I HATE YOU, TRULY!

When we said, “I Do” I meant I do, I do love you so much, I do want to be by your side forever until we are old and gray, until we have children and our children have children. I do want to be your main support system, and the one who lays at night with you every night. I do want to have your babies, be your rock, be your lover. Tony, I will fight for us, and will never give up on what we have, and what we will have in the future. The day I married you was the best day of my life, the most emotional, the most nervous, the most exciting day I ever had. My family is tearing me away from you or at least trying too, but they will never win, I am bounded to you, we are bounded to each other till death!! when I get home, we will get our place and be together like we should have all along. I miss you and will see you soon. Love always your booboo, Dana.

life out! I am just tired of all of this shit! Let’s be friends it is better that way! PS: I am having better sex NOW than I EVER did with you!

THE TRAIN!

to accept that! I don’t know what else to tell you but the truth of the matters. If we are going to be together, why can’t you trust me, love and adore me all at the same time? It has been 3 years but I still can’t forget the fact that you did cheat on me, and to be honest I will never forget that shit, not am I going to let it go! So stop huffing and puffing thinking that I am going to let it go, cause I am not! You need to find a girl that is more suitable for yourself!

IN BETWEEN THE LOVE & HATE I wish I could feel indifference toward you-the way I feel about most past loves-neither love nor hate. A fleeting thought, a distant memory, no permanent place in my consciousness. This is the

be piqued and indifference towards you will settle in. You don’t deserve the energy it takes to hate.

JUST DON’T KNOW! I am fucking bored out of my mind! Sometimes I think to myself, what the fuck am I really doing here! I don’t like none of the people that I work with, what the fuck am I doing! Then you come around and just call with the bullshit! And I am just caught up with it over the phone! Do you think that anyone wants to hear this nonsense! I surely don’t when you don’t call I am great..as Tony the tiger would say! But, when you call I am sitting on the other end of the phone like what the fuck is going on! why is he calling...sometimes I wish that you would stop calling so I can straighten my own

I am really getting tired of getting on the train in the morning and people rub themselves all on my arm, and then when I turn around I look at the person and they look at me like I am crazy or they pretend to be scared! Bitches, I am not going to attack you or anything, I just want you to watch where you are going and stop thinking that you are going to rub all up on me and I not look at you weird! First of all there is more than enough room for you to stand, second I don’t want any body contact unless I really have to and third stop being an asshole and move the fuck towards the fucking empty space!
