³ PHILLY RADIO JUST got a little duller now
that Brian Carter’s passed away, even though he’d been broadcasting out of his hometown of Baltimore for some time. From 1987 to 1999, the team of Carter and Sanborn turned morning-radio comedy into an art, first on Power 99 and later on WDAS-FM. The duo proved that being a humorous on-air pair didn’t require either the talent or the listeners to be assholes. They could be ribald, caustic and corny without a hint of the “gonzo” that long ago destroyed much of morning radio. They were warm and welcoming, and hearing Carter’s voice after their opening theme song “Two for the Price of One” made the rest of your day that much better. They were hip-hop’s equivalent of Abbott & Costello, without the schtickiness. Carter will be missed. Condolences to his family. ³ It sounds as if the long-vacant corner on Sixth and Bainbridge streets next to chi-chi Bistrot La Minette is getting a makeover from the brewhaus hosses of the Bella Vista Beer Distributors. You want casks? We hear the space will be stuffed with them. ³ That Da Comrade! gig at West Philly’s Glitoria house over the weekend that I mentioned in Icepack Illustrated last Friday turned out to be the raucous, Beefheart-like ensemble’s swan song. “It simply ran its course,” said principal singer/songwriter Fletcher Van Vliet, a sideburn-wearing gent who pens and croons sea-shanty-esque waltz-pop for his own On the Water project. “But there’ll be a new outfit with new music to come.” Comrade was a mussed-up fave of mine; here’s hoping for more of the same. ³ There’s been a flurry of activity at the twin towers of 2031 and 2029 Walnut St., the loneliest part of that long block. While the former address will blossom into Cherry Hill habitué Greg Vernick’s Vernick Food & Drink in a minute and a huff, that Le Bec-Fin-based café I wrote about a while ago is quickly gathering steam at the latter address, the one-time home of David Carroll’s much-missed Magazine, then Monkey Bar then the sad Strongbox not-spot. La Petite Dauphine is ex-LBFer David Smith’scoffee/small French cuisine plate salon. Expect a race to the finis between the two addresses. ³ One of this town’s favorite benefactors, Gerry Lenfest of Lenfest Broadcasting, is finally ready to launch the U.S.’s first broadcast television network designed for African-American audiences in the Philly area. Bounce TV will air on Comcast channel 262 in collaboration with WMCN 44 and Bounce founders Martin Luther King III and ex-UN ambassador Andrew Young — both of whom have been in and out of Philly since December when they pre-launched the channel. A soft Bounce, so to speak. ³ Icepack Illustrated lives at citypaper.net/criticalmass. (a_amorosi@citypaper.net)
NEVERMORE: Grip the raven, the speculated inspiration for Edgar Allan Poe’s classic poem, permanently perches in the Free Library (though not upon a bust of Pallas). WILL BROWN
show+tell By Emily Guendelsberger
THAT’S SO RAVEN GRIP THE RAVEN | Free Library, Rare Book Department
³ A RAVEN PERCHES upon a bust of Pallas near the door of the Free Library’s Rare Book Department. It’s a Halloween-prop fake, though — the real raven is just down the hushed hall, sitting on a branch inside two ventilated UV-glass cases dimly lit with fiberoptic lights. As the John Cusack movie is out this week (see Shaun Brady’s review on p. 24), City Paper visited Grip the Raven, believed to be the inspiration for the one who famously quoth “Nevermore.” Grip never belonged to Edgar Allan Poe, though — in fact, the two never met. This was the first of three pet ravens owned by Charles Dickens, all of which were named Grip. “Like George Foreman,” says Janine Pollock, head of the Rare Book Department. Though his name choices seem impersonal, Dickens loved animals, writing with great affection about the family’s many pets in correspondence. (He loved even the tiniest pets — a small headstone for the family canary sits near Grip’s case, with the epitaph “Dick, the best of birds.”) Dickens preserved some of his pets physically, but immortalized a few in his novels. Most prominent is Grip, who will forever be the companion of the titular half-wit of Barnaby Rudge, which Dickens was working on when Grip died after eating paint in 1841.
So why is Dickens’ raven in the Free Library’s Poe collection? There’s literary connections: Poe’s raven and the real and fictional Grips talked — a letter from Dickens mentions that the bird’s dying words were “‘Halloa old girl!’ (his favorite expression)” — and the poem has echoes of a scene in Barnaby Rudge where a character asks, “What was that — him tapping at the door?” and another responds, “’Tis someone knocking softly at the shutter.” But “the smoking gun is the review in Graham’s Magazine,” says Pollock. Poe, living in Philadelphia, favorably reviewed Barnaby Rudge in 1842, but opined that Grip might have been used more effectively as a literary device: “The raven, too, intensely amusing as it is, might have been made, more than we now see it. … Its croakings might have been prophetically heard. … ” From this comes the theory that “The Raven,” written in 1845, is Poe’s take on what he felt Dickens should have done. This was solidified by Philly’s Richard Gimbel, an avid collector of both authors. He got Grip at a Dickens auction, but at some point decided it belonged with Poe, as when he died in 1970 “he gave his Dickens collection to Yale and he gave his Poe collection to us,” says Pollock. Since then, Grip briefly journeyed across the street in the ’90s to be restuffed and cleaned at the Academy of Natural Sciences (“I think he had bugs,” says Pollock). He then returned to his home among the rare books — where he still is sitting, still is sitting.
Its dying words were “Halloa, old girl!”

THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS MONSIEUR LAZHAR|A Canadian filmmaker Philippe Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar, an adaptation of the stage play by Évelyne de la Chenelière, opens with kids playing in a Montréal publicschool yard only moments before mischievous 11-year-old Simon (Émilien Néron) runs inside to discover his teacher hanging from the ceiling of her classroom. With her school thrown into an emotional tizzy, the principal hires the first pleasant face with a résumé to walk into her office, an Algerian transplant named Bachir Lazhar (Mohamed Fellag). Upon his humble arrival, one would expect to settle in for one of those heart-tugging dramas about a heroic teacher swooping in to rescue downtrodden students, but as he grapples with ways to bring light back into his horrified classroom, it’s revealed he’s struggling with a heavy heart of his own. When the doors open to Lazhar’s private life, we learn that he’s no run-of-the-mill expatriate, but a yet-tobe-legal refugee whose wife and two young daughters were murdered by terrorists during the Algerian civil war. From there, Flardeau weaves in effective, cinematic parallels between the teacher (who keeps his struggles hidden when at school) and his students, who each deal with the tragedy in unique, thought-provoking ways. The film brings up a lot of issues, which, if you don’t know where to focus, may prove distracting. The real joy of it is in the classroom, where Fellag and a cast of talented ’tweens draw up a lesson plan about dealing with tragedy and finding that glowing exit sign at the end of a dark hall. —Josh Middleton (Ritz Five)
A haiku: Mommy, why do all these claymation pirates have such hideous teeth? (Not reviewed) (Pearl, UA Riverview)
THE RAVEN|CMy copy of The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe seems to be incomplete after all. There’s no story called “The Formulaic Thriller of Ashley Judd,” but a tale of that title would appear to be the only possible basis for James McTeigue’s utterly uninspired film. For all the resemblance the main character bears to the real Poe, Judd may as well have donned a fake goatee to play the late author, accustomed as she is to running around after shadowy killers, trying to rescue a loved one from their nefarious clutches. Instead, we get John Cusack, portraying the famously haunted scribe as a self-absorbed blowhard, albeit one with a soft spot for a buxom blonde debutante (Alice Eve). Poe’s self-described “biggest fan” undertakes a series of murders inspired by some of his most famous stories, so the author himself is called in to assist with the investigation — never mind that a cursory skimming would unearth the relevant clues. No amount of swinging pendulums, cobblestone streets (Hungary and Serbia standing in for Baltimore) or walled-in bodies can cover for the fact that McTeigue’s grasp of Poe doesn’t extend much further than the average high schooler’s. The master of atmospheric dread and inexplicable mysteries is trapped in a story that possesses neither. It's enough to drive anyone to

✚ WOMEN OF FIRE AND BLOOD Greek poet, actress, writer and director Lili Bita passes her compilation of ancient heroines, Women of Fire and Blood, to performer Hannah Tsapatoris MacLeod at Kensington’s Walking Fish Theatre this
weekend. In 11 monologues, MacLeod embodies Clytemnestra, Phaedra, Eurydice and other female characters from Greek mythology, who speak with Bita’s modern feminist sensibility and powerful erotic candor. Most of their stories are fiery and bloody indeed: Medea, who avenged Jason’s rejection by murdering her own children; Jocasta, who killed herself after discovering she had married her son Oedipus; and Helen, who sparked that little dustup in Troy. —Mark Cofta Through April 29, $18, Walking Fish Theatre, 2509 Frankford Ave., 215-427WALK, walkingfishtheatre.com.

✚ SITUATION: BECOMING If you believe it’s less who we are but who we become that matters most, you’ll dig the vibe of situation:becoming, a new multidisciplinary dance work by <fidget>, the Philly arts col-
laborative helmed by husbandand-wife team Megan Bridge (choreography) and Peter Price (sound and video). Performed by Bridge with Zornitsa Stoyanova, Mauri Walton and Annie Wilson, situation:becoming is a work “about presence … in which performers’ identities are not fixed.” The <fidget > folks are high-concept thinkers, so expect an experimental performance that probes the dark sides of human existence and an abstract exploration of beingness in a truly intimate setting: Each audience is limited to 20 people. —Deni Kasrel Thu.-Sat., April 26-28 and May 3-5, 8 p.m.; Sun., April 29, 2 p.m.; $8-$20, thefidget space, 1714 N. ✚ SHAKES THE CLOWN Give Awesome Fest some credit. Sure they got Morgan “Super Size Me” Spurlock, but
that dude’ll go to the opening of an envelope. It’s Bobcat Goldthwait that’s the “get.” Goldthwait has long been standup comedy’s most grating personality — mercurial, abrasive, wince-inducing. But it’s his cinematic oeuvre we’re celebrating, and somehow those horrid qualities have made for some fine, testy films, such as the little-seen Sleeping Dogs Lie and the even littler-seen World’s Greatest Dad. Shakes the Clown is his master work, wherein director/writer/star Goldthwait unleashes a sadly depraved tale of evil jestering and drunken debauchery that makes Bad Santa look like a Toys “R” Us commercial. Awesome Fest celebrates the 20th anniversary of Shakes with a screening, the local premiere of Bobcat’s newest flick, God Bless America, and an appearance by the comedian/auteur himself. Shake that. —A.D. Amorosi Thu., April 26, 10 p.m., $5, Frankford Hall, 1210 Frankford Ave., 215-634-3338 theawesomefest.com.

✚ THE SPINNING LEAVES Originally scheduled for January 2012, the Spinning Leaves’ new EP is finally ready. As we’ve come to expect from this acoustic Philly duo, “Head Aglow” — available from Drexel’s MAD Dragon label as a 7-inch and download, backed with “Shades of Red,” “Knife Arms” and “Dulcimer Grove” — finds Michael Baker and Barbara Gettes mixing traditional folk with elements of soft, warm ’70s pop and spooky psychedelia. Recorded at a 19th-century church in New York state using old mics, analog tape and Steve Hillage-like guitar heroics, these emotional new songs uncover
some rich depth and heft to go with the Leaves’ usual spacedout sensuality. —A.D. Amorosi Fri., April 27, 9 p.m., $10, with Juliet Hope Wayne, Lightninging and Divers, Underground Arts in the Wolf Building, 1200 Callowhill St., thespinningleaves.com.

✚ LOW LIVES 4 The title of this Little Berlin gallery/Mascher Space team-up suggests a quartet of ne’er-do-wells, but the “Low” is for “low fidelity,” as the performance is part of a worldwide Internet-based program of works created with a low-fidelity aesthetic. Grainy images and imperfect sound quality are to be expected. Streamed live as various events occur across the globe, if parts are lost in transmission, well, so it goes. Little Berlin throws a Low Lives 4 party hosted by Mascher artist Marcel Williams Foster, who’ll be in his drag persona of primatologist Jane Goodall. Plan for

With more than a dozen music-themed films crammed into a single long weekend, the XPN Music Film Festival is like Coachella without the sunburn and unwanted touching. The offerings naturally favor documentaries, including Joe Berlinger’s Under African Skies, a commendably broad investigation of the making of Paul Simon’s Graceland. Although it fails to present a compelling argument for the cultural boycott Simon had to skirt to record in apartheid-era South Africa, the film devotes ample time to a present-day reckoning between Simon and the son of the late African National Congress leader Oliver Tambo, as well as an anniversary concert reuniting the original musicians. Paul Williams Still Alive is an engaging, often prickly portrait of the songwriter behind ’70s classics “Close to You” and “Rainbow Connection,” now struggling with quasi-obscurity and the unwanted attentions of the film’s director. And Charles Bradley: Soul of America (pictured) follows a 62-year-old James Brown impersonator on the path to his first solo album, plotting an unlikely intersection between the Daptone soul revival and Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold.” On the fiction side, Sweden’s Sound of Noisechronicles the cat-and-mouse game between a tone-deaf Swedish policeman and a renegade band of flash-mobbing percussionists, while California Solo features Robert Carlyle as a washed-up Brit-pop star who spends his nights podcasting the untimely deaths of his musical heroes. Most screenings take place at various locations in Penn’s Annenberg Center, but the festival decamps to World Café Live for Girl Walk//All Day,an urban dance film set to Girl Talk’s eponymous album, and sets Saturday’s midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the TLA, site of many past cries of “Asshole!” Through Sun., April 29, various times and locations, $12 (per screening)-$125 (all-festival pass), xpn.org. —Sam Adams

Terra Lopez paces the stage like a rapper and swings her arms like a conductor, but her singing voice is something harder to pigeonhole. At times, the Sister Crayon frontwoman sounds operatic, each phrase sailing through the air with the grace of a feather and the power of a punch. Other times, she’s a siren swimming through waves of shimmery synths. Last year’s Bellow was an excellent introduction to her Sacramento quartet, and a sneak peek at the trip-hoppy

O
ver the river and through the woods, to Leverington and Ridge we go. Why? Thai. Phu Fha Thai, to be more specific, a Buddha-bedecked parlor with 30 seats and cooking to squelch the battle cry that Philly has no good Thai food. We do. It’s here, in hilly Roxborough. This is where Somlak Phongchang made her home upon More on: arriving from Chiang Mai in 2001. Do you know another Thai cook simmering a stockpot of the Chiang Mai specialty called hung lay curry? I don’t, but I’d wager none could top Phongchang’s version, as shiny and black as dark-chocolate ganache. Cloaking hunks of braised pork loin, the curry’s complex umami had me tasting tamarind, peanut, onion and chili all the way to the evening’s mango-sticky-rice finale, luminous with the rare balance of sweetness and acidity you find in about one of every hundred mangoes. But I’m getting ahead of myself. What preceded the dessert also earned raves, from the delicate steamed crab dumplings to the properly fishy som tum.
citypaper.net
Out in the black-and-white-tiled, burgundy dining room, I could hear the lurch of aggressively bubbling oil in the kitchen when Phongchang dropped our order of fish cakes in the deep fryer. The crunchy pucks of white fish looked as humble as the restaurant itself, but the flavor! Red curry, crushed lemongrass and shredded kaffir lime leaves wound through the moist mash, electrifying the mild fish with powerful, fragrant brightness and complex heat. Carrot flotsam and cucumber jetsam drifted through a sweet-andsour chili sauce, half salad, half dip for the fish cakes, and the kanom beng, a savory rice-flour crepe. Tinted yolk-gold with turmeric, the papery pancake resembled a giant omelette, overflowing with sweet shrimp, bean sprouts, bean curd and shredded coconut. Soft here, crunchy there, it was a textural dynamo. If using precooked duck could ever be forgivable, I might pardon Phongchang for featuring it in her chu chee curry. Sliced breast and whole legs bobbed in the saffron-hued coconut-milk gravy, a jetty for green beans, carrots, peppers and snow MORE FOOD AND peas. Phongchang should really roast her DRINK COVERAGE own birds; this curry, its tropical aroma balAT C I T Y P A P E R . N E T / anced by judicious fish sauce, deserves it. M E A LT I C K E T. Chicken satay was a bit dry, but distinguished by a lively peanut sauce. Chicken dumplings were as light as the crab ones; the spring roll, pedestrian; the fried tofu, squishy and bland. At five months old, Phu Fha Thai isn’t flawless. But warm, well-intentioned service and wallet-friendly prices help any irksome shortcomings fade into the background. Hung lay and chu chee come to the surface, along with this realization: I’ll be seeing a lot more of Roxborough. (adam.erace@citypaper.net)

WALTER!
8-10 MONTHS OLD, PIT BULL MIX Hi! My name is Walter. I was found wandering the streets and I’m now living at PAWS while I wait for a family of my own. I love sitting in laps and playing with tennis balls. Since I’m still young, I need some help learning basic commands and house training, but I know I’ll catch on quickly if you give me a chance! Located on the corner of 2nd and Arch.
All PAWS animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption. For more information, call 215-238-9901 ext. 30 or email adoptions@phillypaws.org

used to give you cocksuckers money, but then I grew up and realized most of you get a check and an access card. I will never again give money to people on the street. I will address you as a human being, but don’t give me an incredulous look when I tell you “no, I don’t do that.” Deal? Kev
NASTY BITCHES RETURN! I just don’t understand ladies...which one of you dumb ass bitches are going to the fucking bathroom, shitting and doing all types of stuff in the fucking toliet and not fucking flushing it! Who the fuck does that...didn’t your mom hold
no roots, no individuality and no choice but to conform to whatever your fake bohemian friends do. No balls. No originality. Like Philly itself... always emulating what succeeded elsewhere. But your ground has expired, your soul reeks of yeast and you despise anything vaguely resembling grace/magic/beauty/depth. You silly babbling cyborgs pander to the shittiest dumbified denominator. In the end you’ll become mass produced bores: a digital statement of algorithmic aptitude. Thanks for patronizing me when I fit the bill for your fleeting movie, assholes. Thing is, I’m for real. Always have been. But I

By doing that there should be alot more communication with things...life is not a joke...let’s act like it....do better already!
I know that you aren’t drunk but you a dumb ass bitch...why the fuck are you calling me...there is no need to call me...and honestly I am tired of hearing all your excuses....do you think anyone wants to hear any of your excuses...it is getting fucking lame...and a waste of my fucking time...I know that you may not have anything to do with your time but I have plenty to do with mine... stop wasting my time....and do me a favor lose my fucking phone number!

YOU ARE FUCKING UP! I am tired of you complaining but by far you are your worst enemy....I don’t like the fact that you keep telling me one thing and then you do another thing! I think it is fucking pathetic....I want to slap the shit out of you for one but that wouldn’t be nice of me to do...so I sit back and just wait...waiting on nonsense...I can’t wait until I don’t need you anymore!
YOU ARE MISSED you when you were a kid and show you love... why would you want someone to see your fucking fesus...to me that just shows how fucking nasty you are...I hope you aren’ t preparing someone’s fucking food because what they don’t know will fucking hurt...I hate you bitches...every time there is a new bitch here the fuck we go again with the digusting nastiness....PS: did you ever hear of toliet paper!
POST SQUATTER ART SHEEP
SMALL SANDLES OK lady...I saw you on the train...and you had some long toes hanging outside of the fucking sandles...are you crazy...you knew that you could fit those sandles when you put them on... I looked at you with a puzzled look on my face like what the fuck and you knew your feet were dragging on the fucking ground! Why would you do that...why would you put your feet through
You know what I miss you....I can’t help myself... I really do...I am just so overwhelmed with excitmenet when I think about the progressive future that you and I are going to have...I am tired of imaginining you and I together touching and feeling each other...I can’t wait to make this a reality! I love the fact that you are just there when I need you to be but when you disappear... it is like crazy because my mind keeps thinking about you...I think about you all the time...come back to me! ✚ To place your FREE ad (100-word limit), go to citypaper.net and click on the LOVE/HATE tab near the top of the page. You who who change faces like the weather, allowing for the next batch of phonies to step in, make me feel embarrassed you ever patronized me. Your lousy art is as shallow as the obnoxious wannabe 80’s music you shat out. You have
won’t bother explaining commitment to you and what it means to really grow at something: art worth fighting for, buying for, making friends for. That might make you aloner. [That’s] no way to spend your youth. Now get back to business as usual. Party? Anyone know where The Party is?

I can’t stop hating you...I don’t know what you did to me behind my back but I know that it was something...why can’t you just mind your business and do what you have to do? You keep playing all these games over and over and you really think that I don’t know what is going on! I am sick and tired of the whole fucking game... Can you try playing this game with someone else? This shit is getting on my nerves...if it doesn’t stop I am going to have to go fuck your friend like I intended the first time.
Stop asking me for money to support your filthy habit! Do you really think I believe you when you tell me you “need something to eat”? There are plenty of missions and soup kitchens in the city for you to get a bite to eat, if you were really hungry that’s where you’d be. AND, stop looking into my car when I drive by as if you know me and I have something for you! Fuck you. You made a mess of your life, stop making your problem everybody else’s problem and get the help available to you to clean yourself up. Also, stop trying to stop me on the street and shake my hand with “hey, big guy!” I don’t know you, I don’t wanna know you and I don’t want you touching me. I

Whoever thought the young man with raven coloured curls I met at the Dragon’s Hearth in the Spring of ’98 would have tied such a tight knot around my heart? Since we met it’s been you and me against the world despite odds, relatives and peeps stacked against us. My White Wolf in Black Sheep’s clothing, years ago you asked me to marry you. We talked and planned but never jumped the broom. Complex as I am, I’ll keep it simple: Marry me. Say yes.
