From the Director's Desk

Leading Through a Challenging Year

T

wenty-twenty was challenging for so many individuals, families and communities. As we reflect on the events of this past year, we are grateful that the golf industry was able to see some positive effects as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. PGA Professionals and golf facilities everywhere were forced to make adjustments and did so in a way that allowed them to continue to operate; while providing enjoyment, mental respite, and physical activity for many people this year. As a whole, the industry saw a significant increase in the number of rounds played, new golfers joining the game, and growing interest in private club and facility memberships. PGA REACH Philadelphia was able to hold a successful first annual ProAm Championship event that raised significant funds that will help support programs and services for youth, military and diverse groups in our area. As we look toward a brighter 2021, we are excited to resume our programs with safety and health guidelines in place. As a PGA Professional, I believe that golf provides a positive outlet for many and this past year was certainly proof of that. Additionally, the game can teach us life-enhancing skills that can be used in all aspects of life. With the addition of our Youth Mentor Program this year, PGA REACH Philadelphia was able to provide a positive role model and coach to those kids enrolled in our Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour Diversity Scholarship program. As you read about

4

our impact in this year’s annual progress report, you will see many individuals who also believe in this great game and the essential supporters that make achieving our mission possible. We are committed to serving our community and improving lives by providing opportunities that make golf accessible for everyone, regardless of their financial means or background. We want golf to look more like our community as a whole and our goal is to bring more women, military veterans, and individuals within marginalized communities into the game through our PGA REACH Philadelphia programs. It is individuals like you who make our efforts possible; your love of the game and dedicated support is greatly appreciated. I want to thank our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and generous donors for your involvement. We value your trust in our organization and our mission to positively impact lives through the game of golf. Sincerely, Leila Mackie, PGA Director PGA REACH Philadelphia

Staying Engaged: PGA Jr. League

W

ith safety being the PGA of America's first priority during the ongoing global pandemic, it cancelled PGA Jr. League's 2020 postseason, resulting in combined Spring, Summer and Fall competitive seasons. PGA Professionals, PGA Jr. League Captains, and Coaches were permitted to run games, practices and activities, while using guidelines that were developed under review from medical advisors and in alignment with the CDC, with the intent of resuming PGA Jr. League in the most responsible manner possible. To keep their youth golfers engaged, PGA Professionals fielded 45 PGA Jr. League teams to unofficially compete against each other in 2020. At the time of filing, PGA REACH Philadelphia expects the 2021 PGA Jr. League season to begin on time, while requiring teams to follow safety guidelines. •

Looking Forward to Going Back to School

P

GA REACH Philadelphia's successful Golf in Schools program was also placed on hiatus in 2020 due to the global pandemic. Golf in Schools, now with 42 schools representing approximately 3,800 students, is designed to introduce kids to the game of golf as well as the mental and physical health benefits the sport provides. The program's curriculum was developed by PGA Professionals and is designed to teach students via their school's physical education classes. While the ongoing pandemic is a fluid situation, PGA REACH Philadelphia is planning for a return to the Golf in Schools program with additional safety protocols in 2021 once schools reopen. PGA REACH Philadelphia collaborates with the Golf Association of Philadelphia and The First Tee of Philadelphia on administering the Golf in Schools program. • PGAREACHPhiladelphia.com PGAREACHPhiladelphia.com

Golf & Give Series Helps Boosts Facilities Amid Pandemic Challenges

A

s golf facilities across the Philadelphia PGA Section were ordered to close in the initial stages of the COVID-19 shutdowns, PGA REACH Philadelphia launched a new fundraising initiative: the Golf & Give Series. The series allowed golfers to play exclusive golf courses while helping to support their local community and PGA REACH Philadelphia. The series also helped support local clubs that may have lost tournaments, outings, and / or events due to the ongoing pandemic. Successful events were hosted by Saucon Valley C.C. and Commonwealth National G.C. and raised $5,000 for the foundation. PGA Professionals, Staff Rally Behind Golf Marathon

P

GA REACH Philadelphia’s annual 100-Hole Golf Marathon initiative engages its own foundation staff, Section PGA PGA Professionals, and local golfers alike to help raise funds for the foundation’s programming. Participants secure donations based on a dollar amount per each hole of golf played, with the ultimate goal of completing 100 holes of golf in one day. In 2020, the PGA Professional staffs from Gulph Mills G.C. and Philadelphia C.C. were joined by PGA REACH Philadelphia staffers, friends and families to raise over $36,300 from over 210 individual donors. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the foundation expanded the Golf Marathon’s typical playing window from one month to three, August through October. In 2021, PGA REACH Philadelphia plans to allow PGA Professionals to hold their marathons in any month, with the hopes of increasing participation and donations. •

Breaking Down Your Donations

P

hiladelphia REACH Philadelphia's major programming initiatives are organized into three core pillars: Youth (PGA Jr. League and Golf in Schools), Military (PGA HOPE Philadelphia), and Diversity (Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour Diversity Scholarships and Mentor Program). Our PGA HOPE program is our foundation's most expansive offering; with five chapters and hundreds of veteran participants, the program accounts for 58 percent of our budgeted program expenses. Our Youth pillar accounts for 22 percent, as the programs are built around the support of PGA Professionals, their golf facilities, and schools. Our Diversity pillar is responsible for 20 percent of our programming budget, and the initiative has been growing each year, and we expect to continue that trend in 2021 and beyond.
