Dear Attendees, Friends, Sponsors & Supporters:
May 14, 2022
The Philo4Thought family offers a warm welcome to all those attending our 2022 Symposium, Sustainable Business Strategies. As always, we begin by offering special thanks to those who contributed to the coordination of this week’s featured activities, discussions and awards. Where two or more are gathered… there is an opportunity for either hope or chaos to thrive. Historically, intellectually and spiritually, human beings are born in various times of crisis. Indeed, from the mythological tales of Zeus to the core stories about our faith, freedom and more, we are identified time and again as warriors, inside and out, with a strength and ingenuity to surpass the crisis set before us. It’s the responsibility of every individual to make sure that hope blossoms and prevails over chaos in our hearts and minds… and in the world around us. Philo4Thought was based on this principle and uses the ancient practice of mentoring to sow seeds of hope, anticipation and philotimo to enable a brighter, sustainable future for the next generation through our mentoring and publications. Today’s event focuses on a trending concept of sustainable business strategies, which on the one hand focuses on the creation of lasting business models and on the other hand focuses on a vision to create a plan that functions as a business while replenishing natural resources to help our community recover from ravages of time across generations. The concept of a sustainable design connects to a metaphysical precept about setting order, but it also reminds us of our civic responsibility to be guardians to one another and to the resources that sustain us and allow us to flourish. As citizens of a global community reconnecting as we move past the crisis I continue to urge each of you to take the time to see your own potential and to appreciate how essential each of you is to the progress of your community. No matter where you are in life, you are surrounded by opportunities to experience, absorb, learn and move forward with clarity and support. Remember that your Greek roots and values are a precious gift and a powerful tool to motivate and connect us across townships, nations and oceans. Our natural tenacity in all things allows us to consider complex issues and approach challenges with intuitive clarity and a quirky sort of optimism that is our trademark. As one generation hands the mantle of responsibility over to the next, we are reminded of the many generations before us – of their legacies – and look ahead to the many more to come – their needs and capabilities. Whether we are in a time of strife or a time of prosperity, it is precisely this simple concept of fellowship and hospitality across generations that keeps grassroots initiatives like Philo4Thought alive, thriving and sustainable, inspiring others to create similar programs in their organizations. Our featured speakers come from a variety of industries including traditional corporate environments in business and finance as well as creative industries such as music, design and architecture and media. We are honored, and humbled to have the amazing support of this wonderful array of individuals, each distinguished for their substantial professional and philanthropic contributions to society, for making themselves available to the Hellenic young professional community. With these thoughts and an optimistic vision of the future in mind, I offer my sincere gratitude to all our esteemed and inspirational sponsors, guest speakers and honorees along with all our mentors – past and present – who brought the initiative to where it is today. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Ευχαριστούμε πάρα πολύ! We hope our attendees will each leave this year’s event with a new and valuable outlook for the future. Sincerely, Chris Salboudis Founding Director & CEO www.philo4thought.org

NYS Assembly Honorees Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Dr. Nadine E. Sabbagh, M.D. 1947-2021 We present this year’s Certificate of Lifetime Excellence posthumously to the dynamic woman who inspired the Philo4Thouught initiative along with countless other movements for the personal, professional and spiritual enhancement of individuals across the globe. This article was initially published in NEO Magazine in October 2021: It is with a heavy heart that family and friends mourn the passing of Dr. Nadine E. Sabbagh, M.D….beloved daughter, sister, cousin, mother, grandmother, physician, mentor and friend. Nadine passed a few weeks before the celebration of her 50th year as a proud U.S. citizen. Within her 50 years in the US, Nadine imparted immeasurable wisdom and joy to all those in her path, dedicating time and effort to learn several key languages needed to address non-English-speaking clients. Throughout her lifetime, Nadine helped countless individuals in the process of overcoming remarkable strife, having survived her own challenges with wisdom, grace and dignity. To her last days, Nadine served as a staunch advocate for those in need, not only as a celebrated medical professional but as a philanthropic Christian. Her fierce faith was equaled only by her great love for humanity and ability to unlock the potential of others. In her own private and professional life, she overcame adversity and sociological bias, tackling every project and challenge with a vengeance and with the certainty that God would provide the strength and wisdom she needed to work past whatever obstacle was placed in her path. She is most known for saying, “to a valiant heart, nothing is impossible.” … She was one of the first of 15 women to complete the full medical (MD) program the University of Cairo (Kasr AlAiny School of Medicine) and went on to complete specialized training in pediatric surgery through a fellowship at the Cite Universitaire in France. She later returned to Cairo to serve in the Doctors Without Borders initiative and completed a variety of advanced medical training and certifications before being recruited to St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City for her residency and fellowship in pediatrics and allergy. Ever the diligent student and aspiring physician, Nadine maintained first place throughout her academic path. Nadine pushed the professional borders for women and young professionals around the world through her medical and administrative work, her public speaking engagements and more. She served as a role model to future generations of Women in STEM and mentored countless young professionals to help them meet their professional and academic goals, to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives. She dedicated her life to helping others as a physician specializing in pediatrics and allergy. In this capacity, she served the communities at St. Vincent’s Hospital, St. Clair’s Hospital, and the Hotel Union; she also engaged in pro bono rotations at six other local hospitals and clinics across the five boroughs of New York in addition to running her own private practice in pediatrics and allergy. In the years to follow, Nadine was recruited to work for the New York City Department of Health & Human Services (NYC DOHHS), where she was the first woman to hold each of the following titles: Medical Director of Quality Assurance, Head of STD Control, Deputy Commissioner, Acting Assistant Commissioner. In these capacities she (1) managed the resolution of several major defects in the city-wide healthcare system, (2) created a sustainable checks and balances on examinations and reporting that are still used today, (3) she worked vehemently to the alleviation and rescue of those who had fallen victim to AIDS/HIV, sexual assault, and more, (4) spoke at several elementary and secondary schools as well as prominent colleges and universities to educate youth on preventative medical protocols, etc. Nadine earned several special recognition awards throughout her career, including a plaque for her outstanding efforts in the medical industry from former President George H. Bush. Life in the bustling city was never easy, but Nadine was always determined to infuse a burst of joy into every day even during the darkest times – especially during the darkest times. With her beloved family scattered across various continents… Nadine’s first 9 years in the US were exceptionally challenging. Despite this and her many substantial trials, she cared for and protected hundreds of thousands of young people through her work as a pediatrician, successfully cared for her parents and children, and kept in frequent contact with her siblings and extended family across North America, Europe and North Africa with the optimistic perspective that the oceans separating them was “just a bit of water and not enough to deter familial solidarity.” Above all, she made sure to instill the value of faith, family spirit, unity and love in her daughters so they would grow to understand that these are the sword and shield needed to combat any form of strife… [This is the greatest legacy Nadine imparts to her beloved children and grandchildren]. She was widely known to all as a generous spirit. Everyone… was always made to feel welcome at her table, welcome to confide, and welcome to seek refuge or assistance. Like the widow in Mark 12:41-44, she gave everything that she was, body mind and soul, to the service of her family, friends and the greater community. Through every word and action Nadine truly imparted the values of faith, courage, wisdom and attentiveness in work and in life…. She will be deeply missed but always remembered for her kindness, creativity, wisdom and intuitiveness. Full Article: https://www.neomagazine.com/2021/10/m-o-m-Mediterranean-on-a-mission

Proceeds & Donations Since Philo4Thought’s inception, the Executive Board has made every effort to work with students and young professionals from all areas of interest as they take strides to flourish. Alumni from Philo4Thought, NHSA and affiliate HYP organizations lead the next generation by example from the vantage point of very successful Hellenic Professionals with remarkable professional and personal convictions and an admirable sense of community spirit and service. A special fundraising initiative is being held to research, identify and improve opportunities for the use of collaborative technological resources that will open the door for Hellenic students to obtain a more robust level of educational and professional training. Proceeds from all events and memberships support Philo4Thought’s ongoing philanthropic educational initiatives (listed above) and to help us acquire the resources needed to continue improving our programming and outreach efforts. A portion of the proceeds is dedicated to our interns and college-bound scholarship initiative. Special affiliate projects within the Hellenic community are also supported with the donation of time, advisement and/or funding based on a case-by-case needs assessment and our available resources. We hope to continue working with the community to identify and support one eligible youth every year. For more information or to recommend a young professional to our (1) young professional of the month honorarium, (2) our internship program or (3) scholarship initiative, visit https://www.philo4thought.org.
From the Desk of the CEO Special Thanks Dear Friends, Now that we’ve concluded today’s events, I hope that you come away from it with an abundance of wisdom and new connections. Nested in each symposium are the stories of journeys that tie us all together. And so, I’ll share a behind-the-scenes story about our first Spring Symposium at Holy Trinity Cathedral back in 2014: It was my first official year as CEO and I was working with another wonderful array of speakers. I had just sold my car for the seed money to launch Philo4Thought and was nervous about this new venture. Meanwhile, my mom, who had attended all my big “firsts” and wanted to be at the Symposium to cheer me on as always -- sometimes embarrassingly so – was home recovering from a surgery. I went to her before the event and she told me, “Don’t worry. IT’S GO TIME! Just remember who you are.” Thankfully, the evening went very well and at the end of the Symposium I conspired with the attendees to call her on speakerphone. She greeted me warmly and asked how the event went. Everyone clapped and cheered very loudly and Mom laughed. “My goodness! Bravo, Chrysoula mou!” (a rare compliment from my harshest critic, followed shortly by) “Did you feed them?” Folks laughed, but in fact there was catering from Yefsi Estiatorio that year, and every year since then we’ve always had some great catered events thanks to our friends at Yefsi, Kellari, International Meat Market, Omega Wine & Liquor, Mr. Vino’s, Ovelia, Gyro World, Telly’s Taverna, Amalia, Mike’s Diner, Stamatis Restaurant, Strokos Deli, Coronet Pizza, Westend Market, Regina’s team at Pi Bakerie, Marwan Restaurant, Agora Taverna, Portofino Restaurant, Martha’s Bakery, Titan Foods, Off Broadway Floral Events, William Poll Deli — and this year, Skinos Restaurant. I thank you all, so much, along with my homes-away-from-home at the Consulate General of Greece in New York, Annunciation Church, St John’s University, Columbia University, Minos and Omonia Cretan Syllogi — in Athens, the American College of Greece (Deree) and Astor Hotel, in Switzerland the Astoria Hotel and surrounding townsfolk. I thank our dear friends at Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, the New York State Assembly and the New York State Attorney General’s Office for offering their unswerving support this year as we work together to emerge from the crisis. We could not have managed without your diligent support! Special thanks to our extended Philo4Thought family, who have opened the doors to their offices and organizations to offer guidance to the young professionals under our care. Last, but not least, I thank my mom and grandparents, who inspired Philo4Thought’s mission from day one. While they’re no longer with us, their legacy lives on in our organization’s daily work. Sincerely, Chris Salboudis Founding Director & CEO www.philo4thought.org
